Live from Tech-UGA: Dogs are doomed (because I pick them)

For the record, I also picked Georgia in 2008. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

Just for the record: I also picked Georgia back in 2008. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

I’ve seen Georgia Tech play five times in person; I’ve seen Georgia six times. Of the teams’ five losses, I’ve covered them all. (Which I guess makes me bad luck. But you knew that already.) I’m not claiming this season’s worth of close observation makes me an expert — you all know better, don’t you? — but it does render me duty-bound to offer this:

I wouldn’t be shocked if Tech wins today. But I would be surprised.

The two best units in this game — Tech’s offense and Georgia’s defense — will deploy against one another. I don’t think Georgia’s D will shut down Paul Johnson’s O, but I don’t see Tech gaining 500 yards again. Say Tech gets 20 points. Will that be enough to win?

Don’t think so. Georgia’s offense isn’t the smoothest-running assemblage, but I don’t see Tech’s defense holding the Bulldogs under 20 points. (Even though Kentucky just did.) If the Bulldogs can find a tailback — a big “if,” I’ll concede — they should be able to keep the ball and keep Johnson’s offense off the field long enough to matter.

Then again, I’m often wrong. But let me note that I picked Georgia to go 10-2 and Tech to finish 8-4 … and both things would happen if the Bulldogs win. I’m saying they will. But maybe you disagree.

And that, as luck would have it, is why we have these live chats. Feel free to disagree. Or agree. Or abstain. I’ll be here until one team or the other actually wins, and I welcome your company. But let me also say this: I’m not inclined to let extraneous issues derail this exercise. So let’s try to keep this installment of Old-Fashioned Hate somewhat clean, OK?

As ever, I thank you in advance.

I’m pretty sure it was the black guy’s voice I heard, not Corso’s. making the GT wins prediction.

I would be much more impressed if GT players had not done the taunting at midfield – shows they are focusing on the game.
Now, if you really want to intimidate the opponents before kick off you should follow the lead of the All Blacks

So: Desmond Howard and Herbstreit picked Tech?

If Tech wins its because they were the better team and played a better game. You won’t hear me say a word different. That’s how it works Techies. That’s how its always worked. Sure, every fan base has moron fans that don’t get it but Techies seem to be the worst.

Thanks.

Johnson is Tech’s worst enemy. We will depend on him doing something stupid to help us, like go for it at mid field on 4th and 3 or play 3 players who the NCAA had sent a letter as to a possible problem….and played them anyway…..whoops, didn’t mean to bring that up.

I was reading some of the post game comments from Miami defensive players this year about how they held Tech to 211 yards total offense. Key was taking away the middle of the field and forcing everything outside. Other keys were handling chop blocks, then sticking to your assignment. Grantham got gouged for 400+ yards last year, should be interesting to see if he goes with the Miami plan. Bet he does.

A downward slide would be not winning a national title since 1980 and you are considered an elite program….don’t you think?

Yes Bradley, all the ESPN guys picked Tech. So if Georgia wins please spare us all the Paul Johnson Fan Club crap about how Johnson still “outcoached” Richt because all his players are future rocket scientists. The ESPN experts seem to think Tech can take care of themselves and they don’t need excuses.

Let’s see if that holds up….

It’s a home game in Atlanta for the Dawgs. I am surprised that it is only 40 percent. I am sure most Tech fans sold their tickets to Dawg fans for the huge profit they made off the middle class.

on any given Saturday any team can beat any team – see Nebraska picked by 30 and losing – see Oklahoma picked by 30 at home and losing – see Oklahoma St. picked by 4 TD’s and losing…….some days it just doesn’t go your way. I want to see if CTG has learned how to handle the Tech O like Virginia did. Our offense has once again gone Jekyl and Hyde – who knows – every game this year has been overly influenced by our defense – they say our D has not stopped anybody of note this year. IF they stop Tech, will that any longer be a valid comment? I don’t see Tech winning. Not this year or any time soon. But let’s face it – nobody wins ‘em all! GO DAWGS!!!!!
