Live from Tech-UGA: Dogs are doomed (because I pick them)

For the record, I also picked Georgia in 2008. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

Just for the record: I also picked Georgia back in 2008. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

I’ve seen Georgia Tech play five times in person; I’ve seen Georgia six times. Of the teams’ five losses, I’ve covered them all. (Which I guess makes me bad luck. But you knew that already.) I’m not claiming this season’s worth of close observation makes me an expert — you all know better, don’t you? — but it does render me duty-bound to offer this:

I wouldn’t be shocked if Tech wins today. But I would be surprised.

The two best units in this game — Tech’s offense and Georgia’s defense — will deploy against one another. I don’t think Georgia’s D will shut down Paul Johnson’s O, but I don’t see Tech gaining 500 yards again. Say Tech gets 20 points. Will that be enough to win?

Don’t think so. Georgia’s offense isn’t the smoothest-running assemblage, but I don’t see Tech’s defense holding the Bulldogs under 20 points. (Even though Kentucky just did.) If the Bulldogs can find a tailback — a big “if,” I’ll concede — they should be able to keep the ball and keep Johnson’s offense off the field long enough to matter.

Then again, I’m often wrong. But let me note that I picked Georgia to go 10-2 and Tech to finish 8-4 … and both things would happen if the Bulldogs win. I’m saying they will. But maybe you disagree.

And that, as luck would have it, is why we have these live chats. Feel free to disagree. Or agree. Or abstain. I’ll be here until one team or the other actually wins, and I welcome your company. But let me also say this: I’m not inclined to let extraneous issues derail this exercise. So let’s try to keep this installment of Old-Fashioned Hate somewhat clean, OK?

As ever, I thank you in advance.

Tech won’t be able to run on us like last few years and UGA will score usual 35-45 pts and dominate the 2nd half….

If Georgia can run the ball – and we all know with they way things are that is a BIG if – they should win. I wonder if Crowell can actually play a full game start to finish? It will probably be a close game regardless.GO DAWGS!

Given your 20 points reasoning, MB, a variable might be whether or not Washington can throw an accurate pass or two.

I just hope PJ dosen’t choke in the end as the last 2 seasons—-4 deep passes, and last season, Washington running and passing, when Allen is gaining all the rushng yards. I’m worried about Grohs defensive plan. Why does he have his defensive backs let the other team catch the ball then tackle him? Why not play on the line with them? If they beat you, let them throw deep.

I expect UGA to win a close one but hopeful that Mark Bradley drops to 1-3 in predictions on UGA-GT in the Johnson era – only one he got right was 2010.

My two Georgia losses were to Florida and Mississippi State — wrong on both. My Tech losses were to N.C. State, Miami and Virginia Tech — right on two.

Here’s hoping Dawgs play like they did against Auburn and Tech plays like they have all year say Clemson. Duke putting 31 on Tech’s D does not bode well for them, and Tech will have 3 or 4 “good” plays today, I just don’t see them running much on this defense. Dawgs 35-17

Crowell and Thomas are both in uniform. Crowell is listed as the starter on depth chart. But esteemed colleague Chip Towers says we should expect Carlton Thomas to get a lot of work.

Contain defense Groh uses against superior talent was scouted out after the Clemson game. Murray short game is probably Game Plan A with second half running game ala Auburn

Amazing video of a high school senior from Columbia TN who kicks the ball dead straight 75-80 yards in the air. He was successful on 54 of 54 attempts this season….100%. Now he needs a college team. Wants to go to Georgia Tech.

Watch for yourself…it is unreal!

I just wish I could livde long enough to see UGA win eight straight…don’t think it will happen in this lifetime…not feelin’ too well these holidays, but ’tis the season for the dreamin’, right?

They- UGA- had better turn it up a notch or two today, or they well never believe in themselves next week.

SEC should go 3 for 4, or even 4 for 4, vs ACC, but you got to play the games. Honestly, you never know who’s going to show up in this day and time…and THAT is the ONLY thing you can most assuredly take to the bank!

Hope one and all had grand and safe holidays! Go DOGS!
