Walmart shoppers! Here’s the scoop on Tech and UGA fans!

Sometimes Tech folks feel overshadowed. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)

Sometimes Tech folks feel overshadowed. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)

In years past our annual look at Georgia fans vis-a-vis Georgia Tech has been offered in the spirit of good clean fun. This year, for the sake of novelty (and also because even I’ve wearied of Willie Martinez), the idea will be to help these two neighboring-but-different groups actually understand one another.

And then we’ll all join hands and raise our voices in a spirited rendition of “I’d Like To Teach the World to Sing” and toast one another with Coca-Cola products, and by the way: Did you know Georgia fans refer to Bobby Dodd Stadium as “The Joke By Coke”?

But enough! No more gags from me this year! Instead I offer the observations gained from dwelling among Tech and Georgia folks these past 27 years, eight months and 18 days.

Tech fans care just as much about football as Georgia fans. This may come as a surprise to those Bulldogs backers who are forever mocking the attendance at Bobby Dodd Stadium. (For the Jackets’ mammoth Thursday night clash against No. 10 Virginia Tech, attendance was announced at 50,140 in a facility that seats 55,000.) But counting heads isn’t necessarily a measure of passion.

Tech’s enrollment is roughly 20,000 — Georgia’s is 35,000, by the way — and a goodly percentage of those students will take their degrees and move elsewhere. (This isn’t to say that no Georgia grad ever moves out of state. Even Lewis Grizzard moved to Chicago for a few months.) But studies have shown that there are more Auburn grads living in metro Atlanta than Tech alums.

Numbers-wise, Georgia is always going to win. That doesn’t mean Tech folks don’t care. They do. Just ask any alum what he/she thinks of a Tech uniform that doesn’t feature the color gold. Or get one going on Bill Lewis’ 2 1/2-year reign of error.

Just as Tech fans hate being hit over the head with attendance figures, Georgia fans hate hearing about Jan Kemp. When John Davis was a Tech lineman back in the ’80s, he told me this joke: “How do you get a degree from Georgia? Drive by campus and roll down the window.” And there was a time, let’s stipulate, when UGA wasn’t exactly a school of renown, and the Jan Kemp trial only underscored the notion.

But that was then, and under presidents Charles Knapp and Michael Adams the University of Georgia has become a place of pride and achievement. No, calculus isn’t a requirement for every UGA undergrad, but the academic missions of the schools are rather different. Georgia is a broad-based state university; Tech is, duh, a technical institute. Not everyone wants to be an engineer. Just because your diploma is from UGA doesn’t make you a comparative moron.

Not that Tech folks are eager to concede the point. On his Tuesday night radio show, Tech coach Paul Johnson took a call from someone who began barking. Said Johnson: “He just got off from Walmart.” (FYI, the CEO of Walmart is Tech grad Michael Duke.)

• When Tech fans speak of football tradition, they think first of Bobby Dodd. He was everything a Tech fan wanted in a coach. He was smart and his teams played precise football and he won a lot of games and he, not incidentally, beat Georgia eight times running. But that was in the ’50s, and those were different times: College football wasn’t yet a billion-dollar industry driven by TV and recruiting wasn’t a cutthroat nationwide competition.

Reasonable Tech fans — and Tech fans, by and large, tend to be reasonable — cannot envision their team ever again beating Georgia eight times in a row. (Since 1977, Tech has beaten Georgia eight times total.) In their heart of hearts, Tech fans would be satisfied with winning one of every three against their bitter rival. Not coincidentally, Johnson is 1-2 against Georgia.

• When Georgia fans speak of tradition, they think first of Herschel Walker. Yes, the Bulldogs were winning SEC and even national championships and turning out famous players (Sinkwich, Trippi, Tarkenton) long before landing the kid from Wrightsville on Easter 1980, but the Era of Herschel propelled Georgia from the ranks of perennial Southern power to something bigger. By every measure, those were the three greatest years in Bulldogs history.

That said, those three seasons skewed some Georgia fans’ view of their program. Two decades would pass before Georgia won another SEC title. Mark Richt has taken two conference titles and three division championships and his teams have finished in the top 10 five times, but Georgia hasn’t played for a national crown since 1982, and five different SEC schools have finished No. 1 over the past 13 years. UGA fans are still waiting their turn, same as they await the Next Herschel.

Georgia is Tech’s biggest game of every year. Chan Gailey got fired not because he had losing seasons — he didn’t, not a one — but because he was 0-6 against the Bulldogs. And it’s undeniable that the words “To Hell with Georgia” are sung the loudest whenever “Ramblin’ Wreck” is played.

• Tech is Georgia’s biggest game only when Georgia fans are scared they might lose. This isn’t such a year. Georgia has won its division and is going to play LSU or Alabama for the SEC title next week. Georgia has, to borrow another Johnson line, bigger fish to fry. Which is the primary reason Georgia fans should be wary of Johnson and his team.

And another difference: CMR is levels above CPJ when it comes to being a class-act. Johnson’s use of the term “retard” to refer to a Georgia fan shows he lacks any understanding of the challenges of special needs people and their families. Last year, it was an instruction to Tech fans to find a Georgia fan and “punch them in the face.” He should worry more about football and keeping his team off probation than he does about insulting others.

Oh, and the comment about the SEC being overrated shows he is out of touch with reality.

1)”Tech fans care just as much about football as Georgia fans. ”

No, they don’t. A few Tech fans care a lot about football, but among current students and alumni, it is not close.

2) UGA fans were by no means universally confident before BSU. Also, I was a lot more comfortable, Burdell, before NMS and CC, but that is just me. Regardless, with the UGA stout run defense, I think we have reason to be confident going into a game against a team that almost lost to Duke, which doesn’t even have a football program. They just hand out jerseys to the first 100 fans who show up.

3) Mark: What was the Willie Martinez reference? The fact that Tech can only beat UGA if we have an awful DC or is this recycled content with a few updates?

Georgia football coach Mark Richt rumored to be leaving
November 21, 2011 3:00 AM by Mark Mayer

Embattled Georgia football coach Mark Richt, who led Georgia to the SEC East regular season title with a victory over Kentucky on Saturday, will leave the program at the end of the season according to inside sources.

Top candidates to replace Richt reportedly are Tennessee coach Derek Dooley and Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo. Dooley is the son of Vince Dooley, longtime Bulldogs coach/athletic director and an Athens icon.

Richt’s job was reportedly on the line this season especially after an 0-2 start, but the Bulldogs rallied to win nine straight games to capture the SEC East title.

Sources in the South Carolina/Georgia area say that Richt will pursue outside interests and decide on his own not to return to Georgia.

Richt was hired as head coach of the Bulldogs before the 2001 season, replacing Jim Donnan. He has won two outright SEC championships, four SEC East titles and led Georgia to a finish in the AP Top 10 five times.

It’s probably the 3rd or 4th most important game on UGA’s schedule in any given year. That’s mainly because it’s a non conference game so it automatically has less importance. I think the Tech/UGA relationship is similar to UGA/FLA. The FLA game has been very important to UGA fans over the last 20+ years because FLA has won so much but it’s not as important to FLA because they win. If Tech won more versus UGA it would have less importance for them.

Tech fans care just as much about football as Georgia fans.

No they don’t. Maybe a few do. Football is the sole reason most UGA fans wake up in the morning. We love football, but it doesn’t consume our lives or school like it does at UGA. I have already shifted most of my attention to basketball, UGA fans never seem to shift their attention at all.

Dawgs live rent free in Tech’s mind. I have Tech friends and they talk and think about us all the time. Kinda sad in a way. Winning the 9 of the last 10 I’m sure has something to do with it. Some Tech bloggers like to brag they are all about the academics and the “Tech life” etc, but beating us is more important to them than anything it seems. If we are bumpkins and trailer trash to them……Why do they care?

GT’s Grad & Undergrad Business School is ranked #25 in the country.

That’s 24 schools that are above you, so what’s the deal with your arrogance?

All this Tech superiority? Why? Most of them got rejected from MIT or couldn’t get into a good private/Ivy League school. It’s called Sheol…and it’s where the bugs live. It’s an obvious psychological dynamic at work when the perennial losers limp back over to their over-burnished academic achievements and start shouting from the rooftops that they’re superior when even the stats they cite show that they’re way, way, way down the list. This is a football game we’re discussing. Not Battle of the Mathletes.

And for those who like to mix a bit of humor in with their heavenly entreaties for Georgia to do well, Todd Miller sends in this prayer given by John Brown of Monticello to the East Metro Bulldog Club this week:
Tonight our Lord we are gathered as members of the Bulldog Nation and we thank you for the blessings of being a Bulldog.
We thank you for fall afternoons between the hedges, we thank you that we are blessed to hear the Redcoats playing “Glory, Glory,” and we give thanks for the chills we get when the trumpet tones the battle hymn. We give thanks for the smell of ribs cooking on the grills of campus tailgates and we gave thanks for the chapel bell ringing after a victory, and are grateful for the sheer joy of wearing red and black.
We thank you for those moments that we treasure, Tarkenton to Herron, the flea-flicker versus Bama, Appleby to Washington, that kid outa Johnson County running through two men, run Lindsey run, sugar falling from the sky, Butler kicking it a million miles, hobnailed boots that still hurt in Knoxville and Johnson in the end zone.
Tonight we thank you for Aaron Murray, a fine young man who did not charge us $180,000 to play quarterback.
Tonight we thank you that Mrs. Geathers and Mrs. Jenkins allowed their sons to discover biscuits and pound cake at an early age so that we might have a nose guard for the 3-4 defense.
Tonight we thank you for the new Nike uniforms. We may not like them but we know they look better than a Gator in a tank top and jean shorts.
Tonight we thank you that as we gathered here that we have been blessed, we have been blessed to live in land that stands for freedom, for those who have given of themselves to defend our freedom. We thank you for the blessings of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and we pray for your blessings to continue on we who are gathered here this evening that may truly understand that it is great to be a Georgia Bulldog.
Amen.

Here is the typical life cycle of a Georgia Tech fan:

1. Run your mouth in February about how recruiting doesn’t mean anything and all those stars and rankings are meangless because UGA hasn’t won 5 national titles in a row;

2. Run your mouth in August about how overrated UGA is and how they will choke;

3. Run your mouth the whole season about how UGA hasn’t played anyone and the SEC is overrated;

4. Puff your chest and act tough because you rushed for 300 yards on Duke/UVA/Maryland, etc.

5. Rurn your mouth the week before the UGA like it is Tech that has won 9 of the last 10 instead of the other way around;

6. Predictably lose to UGA like clockwork;

7. Pull excuses out of your backside for loss and talk out of other side of your mouth to say that UGA should beat Tech because of all those 5 star recruits we get.

8. Lose bowl game and claim its meaningless because you lost it.

9. Cry like a little girl for a couple of months.

10. Repeat.

That’s the way its been for several years now. Am I missing something?

“Tech’s enrollment is roughly 20,000 — Georgia’s is 35,000, by the way — and a goodly percentage of those students will take their degrees and move elsewhere. (This isn’t to say that no Georgia grad ever moves out of state. Even Lewis Grizzard moved to Chicago for a few months.) But studies have shown that there are more Auburn grads living in metro Atlanta than Tech alums.”
_________________________

This is a very weak excuse Mr. Bradley.

ND is still around 10K students and is much smaller than GT, but they sellout an 80K Stadium and could probably sellout a 95K Stadium if they had it.

The REASON that is a weak excuse is that Colleges rely on “sidewalk alums” to actually sell out their games, GT’s problem is that GT and their SMUG, ARROGANT ways are not conducive to growing a sizable sidewalk alumni base that can sell out Games in FB.

At any rate a College with 20K students in a Metro Area of 5.8 Million should be able to sell-out a 55K Stadium EASILY.

GT Fails miserably at that because they spend too much of their time telling everyone else how much better they are than everyone else, just like Coach Fish Fry’s snarky comments.

Read Richt’s praise of GT and Johnson if you want to see a stark contrast between smack talk and disrespect vs class and respect. The problem with calling the barking wonder a retard from Walmart is that is the same thing the GT Joe types are saying here. Maybe Johnson is GT Joe! The guys in front and beside me were dressed in camo and overalls and spent the entire game swearing like sailors and taunting the Tech players mercilessly. Most of the comments were totally crude and inappropriate – but funny as hell. My son got an education and some entertainment.

Then, when I asked the guys when they went to UGA, telling them that I was there during the Herschel years, the guy next to me said, “I didn’t go to Georgia.” I then asked, “okay, so where did you graduate from?” And he said, and I quote word for word… “oh hell, I didn’t go to no college”! In all honesty, CPJ shouldn’t have to apologize for the retard comment; it was a harmless remark on his own radio show. If he had made disparaging comments about someone who was obviously mentally or emotionally challenged that would be a different matter. As usual, the Yellow Jackets are getting slaughtered, with the other team racking up score after score while Tech don’t register a single point. Finally, late in the game Tech kicks a field goal. The dog jumps on the bar and starts dancing and doing the moonwalk.”Your dog’s as big a fan as you are, I see,” the bartender says. “Does he do that every time Tech get a field goal?” “Sure does,” says the fan. “Wow,” says the bartender. “What does he do when Tech scores a touchdown?”

You make a fair point. I’m a die hard UGA fan and it breaks my heart to see the bulldogs they breed as Ugas.

I personally have a 9 year old male bulldog who looks nothing like the Ugas. He is 50 pounds (not 90 like Uga). He can still jump up on the couch at 9 years old. He breathes without sound and sleeps without snoring. Some bulldog breeders should be arrested but there are many many good bulldogs still out there.

“That sounds great, the man said. Let’s do it!”

A few days later, in the operating room, the surgeon asks the man if he’s absolutely certain he wants the surgery. “I sure am,” the man says. “Let’s get on with it.”

A couple of hours later, the surgeon has finished removing 99% of the man’s brain. Then, the unthinkable happened. The surgeon sneezed and accidentally removed the 1% of the brain that was left.

In the recovery room, the surgeon said, “Sir, I am so sorry. Instead of removing 99% of your brain, I accidentally removed 100%. this has never happened before, so we have no idea what someone without a brain will be like.”

Hey guys how bout this one – if I get a degree from Georgia Tech, I’ll be really really smart. Then I’ll make all the Georgia grads work for me (because that’s all I ever think about in my little twisted world) and make them be greeters at Walmart and stuff. Oh, and I’ll boss them around a lot and be really mean to them and make them take out the trash (it’ll be real stinky trash too). Cause when I’m a big important manager running a big important company, I’m going to (still) spend all my time obsessing about Georgia fans. Umm….yeah. CPJ’s only mistake was using the word “retarded”. Any public figure should know that’s a 4 letter word in today’s politically correct no one can ever be offended society.

Taken in full context, there’s no way anyone can argue his point though. The entire sentence was:

“There’s some great of both teams, most of the fans are classy as can be, but anyone who calls into a radio show and barks is either retarded or doesn’t have a life.”

Can you argue with that, really? If he has replaced “retarded” with “an idiot” or “probably not a UGA grad” or “living in his mom’s basement” it would have been quite clever.

“The fans that bark the loudest will never set foot in a classroom outside of high school.”

This is my experience. The Georgia grads I know love to win but do not crow about it. The Georgia football team is not the most important thing in their life. Ragging the opposition fan is not the most important thing in their life. They have a degree from a top notch, up and coming university, and have a life beyond football. A life beyond the football game and beyond football recruiting.

The high school grads that are Georgia fans are just the opposite.

Mark, you’re probably too young to remember, but when GT was in the SEC, they not only played like an SEC team, but they filled the stadium with rabid fans every Saturday. When they became an independent, they couldn’t sell tickets. they then went into the ACC because The SEC wouldn’t let them back in. They made too many enemies when they wouldn’t play home and home with several SEC teams, like Auburn had to come to Atlanta every year. They joined the ACC and started playing like an ACC team. They have never recovered ticket wise.GT had less students in 1956, than now, but they sold every season ticket then.

Walmart sucks thanks to the Tech CEO.

Tech should beat UGA and they do and whoever says otherwise is an idiot. By the way, Tech was really good under Bobby Dodd hence his name on the stadium. Tech grads do not even know their history it seems. Tech recruits with the rest of the nation and gets good players too but recently they have not been able to hang with UGA on a consistent basis thanks to the arrival of Mark Richt. HE has cleaned house in recruiting in the state of GA but what hurts on top of that is that Tech is not usually the 2nd choice as other SEC and ACC schools have came in and took over their territory. So yes there is a talent difference and its Tech’s own fault. They used to be tougher to beat on a consistent basis when they had Bill Curry and Bobby Ross coaching. They play weak competition in the ACC and compete for a title but when it comes time to play in a big non-conference game, they have not played a tough enough schedule to be ready for it. Honestly, Tech is just going in the wrong direction in so many ways and the gap is getting wider and wider and wider between Tech and UGA…..which is Tech’s own fault.

Mark Richt has not handled expectations well throughout his career at Georgia.

After a great game against Auburn, what happened against Kentucky?

If Georgia comes out that flat against Georgia Tech, it will be a blowout, Tech’s a top 25 team.

Georgia ALMOST lost to Tenn, Vandy, Kent, surely Tech will get the win.

They better be scared. Look at the point spread. Would you ever say hey ga won the sec east, has 2 losses, 1 ooc to boise who’s top 10 and they are fav only by 5.5? In 2008 in athens I believe ga was a 15 point fav and they didn’t win the east that year and had 2 losses. I don’t get why more people can’t see what ga is. A decent football team that benefitted from not only avoiding the top 3 ranked teams BUT ALSO playing in a putrid sec east. The atlantic coastal IS better than the sec east this year. No doubt about it. That doesn’t mean tech will win but I have a good feeling they will because of that game next week. Playing number 1. TRAP. Playing in the sec champ. TRAP. Playing in a game with little meaning where the soph and juniors have won two in a row against them doesn’t provide much motivation. Beating lsu who will no doubt be a 2 td fav does. And talk about a season ending the way it started with a losing streak. Better hope you get a easy opponent in your bowl game. In other words, better not get Ok or Mich St.

I grew up pulling for Tech unless they played Georgia. I continued this way of thinking even through the parity years of the 1990’s when the Tech game always seemed to be a crap shoot. However, to my mind the average Tech fan has become so obnoxious to deal with in the last 5 years or so that I now pull for them to lose every single game. I find both Tennessee and Alabama fans utterly annoying. You cannot talk football with them because the Bama fan just starts chanting “Roll Tide” and the Vol fan just starts singing “Rocky Top”. Inane. Tech fans are worse than either. Try to talk ball with them and they just want to talk about how much they hate UGA, or you personally as a Dawg fan. Blech.

Truth about the Academics

November 23rd, 2011
9:41 pm

The truth about the Academics at GT vs UGA is NOT that they are more difficult at GT … its that GT’s TYPE of Academics is much less popular. There is a SEVERE decline in this country, and especially in Georgia, of kids who want to study anything related to Science and Math. That and the social fear of being branded a “Nerd” just for being interested in Science and Math and wanting to go to GT.

Are there any fish for me to fry next week? Is Duke a bigger fish than VPI? Could we keep the ACC trophy if we won it anyway because we're on probation?

The game has changed so much through the years. Up to the 80s these players came through and were really part of the school and later part of the community. The truth is that people either take advantage of the God given opportunities given them or waste them. There is a place for both GT and UGA in their respective academic and sports arenas, and each have earned my respect. While I hope UGA prevails on Saturday, fans for each school should demonstrate class and appreciation for the players that have dedicated much time and energy in their preparation for this game.

Tech fans DONT care about football as much as UGA fans. They never sell out a very small stadium. UGA always sells out. UGA fans have to donate to even have a “chance” to buy season tickets. There is never a game at Tech that you simply can not walk up and buy a ticket. There is never a game at UGA that you can walk up and buy a ticket. To say as this article says, that Tech fans care as much is silly and even unprofessional.

And CPJ is a jerk. He is scarcastic. He also is two faced individual, he belittles a recruit who visits another college after committing to Tech but he also has recruits visit Tech after they have already visited someone else.

Thankfully, most of the fans of our two fine institutions of higher learning avoid going too far. A few tarnish the schools, and the team they think they’re embellishing.

Let’s run up that score on Tech this year, and see how they still claim a “Moral Victory.”

It’s true that the Herschel years skewed our view of Georgia football somewhat, but that’s normal. The Spurrier, then Tebow years certainly skewed Florida fans’ perception of UF football. The Bowden heydays skewed FSU’s perception of their program.

But in all fairness, Georgia won 7 SEC titles, a national title, and had a Heisman winner pre-Herschel. We’re playing for our 13th conference title next week, which would tie us with Tennessee behind only Alabama. UGA played for the national championship only 4 seasons before Herschel arrived. Herschel enhanced Georgia football, but he didn’t invent it.

We’ve had our first session, and I’m hopeful. That’s all I can comment on at present.” An unidentified source has disclosed, however, that during break time Coach Johnson took his juice box, crushed it, and said, “See this box, Grantham? This is what Murray is going to look like when Attaochu gets done with him!” Richt will not address disciplinary measures against Johnson until after Saturday’s game, saying only, “Johnson was caught up in the heat of the moment.”

The Tech game is a big game to Georgia only after a defeat – an extremely rare occurance that might happen once every 10 years or so (usally when UGA is banged up and nursing injuries from a brutal SEC schedule or when a sight impared, soon to be suspended, ref goes totally brain dead and decides he sees a fumble when there wasn’t one )

There is no absolutely comparison between playing an SEC team and playing Tech. Tech fans won’t see it and should not be expected to since they seldom experience BIG time football. They have never felt the intensity or the passion of the “cocktail party” or a good slugfest with LSU.Playing the Dukes of this world week in and week out somehow does not measure up to life in the SEC.
I pity then. They don’t know what they are missing.

Tech will play legitimate student-athletes who will go on to successful careers in industrial management and engineering.

Georgia will play mostly bozos who would not have met the academic requirements to enter any college or university. The few who actually graduate will have worthless degrees and skills for which there is no demand. Most will be pathetic losers who are a burden on society. Fortunately the CEOs of Walmart and Waffle House are Tech alumni who will give some of them jobs, but even a graveyard shift fry cook has to have some skills and the ability to stay sober.

Yes, Tech fans would love to defeat Georgia more often, but not at the win-at-all-costs price that Georgia pays.

Next time you see a homeless drunk, be kind to him, he may be a former UGA player.

Every time I read or hear Tech alumni who like to toot how smart they are and how challenging their school is, I’m reminded that people who really are smart and went to a prestigious school don’t have the need to blow their own horn all the time. rtr…you are correct. Both are really good schools. Look at the makeup of the DAWGs. Football players at UGA dont take anything close to the classes GT players take. UGA recruit kids who could care less about education. That being said…UGA is a good school for the rest of the students who go there.

So CPJ made the CEO of Walmart known because he is a GT grad and all GT grads are all of a sudden so proud to be Walmarters. I’m proud of our Aflac ducker, Daniel Amos, founder and CEO of AFLAC. When you’re sick and miss work you can depend on AFLAC. When you’re sick and a GT fan you will have to depend on CPJ. CPJ is a pathetic loser…..hit UGA fans in the face and tell them to get their retarded butts to their Walmart jobs. GT fans must be sooooo proud.

A look at Bobby Dodd

November 25th, 2011
11:45 am

GT’s real glory days of CONSISTANT football ( CONSISTANT QUALITY FOOTBALL) were in the early 1950s. After about 1955 or 1956, GT and Bobby Dodd never attended a MAJOR BOWL until Florida blew GT out in the 1967 Orange Bowl. Not until 2009 did GT see another MAJOR BOWL until Iowa blew GT out in the Orange Bowl. 42 years in between it was for GT in a MAJOR BOWL.

The in between years from the 1950s to 1967 were full of Bluebonnnett Bowl games or Gator Bowl ( Joe PA whupped em in like 64 or 65 in the Gator) or the lesser bowls of that era. Ask any GT alum if i am wrong. Ask them.

GT has this on going myth that they ARE a major power and YES, they WERE back in the early 1950s to about 1956. It died until 1967 ( bowl loss ) and again until 2009 ( bowl loss) .

UGA on the other hand ( in the 50s not true ) has been to Cotton Bowl games ( 60s, 70s and 80s) and to Orange Bowl games (1960) and to many, many Sugaar Bowl games
( 60s, 70s, 80s, 3 lately) in the same overlapping era that Dodd’s teams were sliding.

Even the Citrus Bowl where GT earned fraction of the MNC in 1990 WAS THEN NOT considered a major bowl venue.

Amazing video of a high school senior from Columbia TN who kicks the ball dead straight 75-80 yards in the air. He was successful on 54 of 54 attempts this season….100%. Now he needs a college team.

UGA on paper have the best players 4&5 stars…GT just plan hard nose underdogs players..both got good coaches. Advantage UGA but I’ll bet on Coach Johnson and GT just for the he!! of it. Have a great day.

For any true University of Georgia fan, (whose official school name by the way is THE University of Georgia (emphasis on THE)); the Yellow Jackets are the most perfect mascot possible for Georgia Tech for the following reasons, as the life-cycle between the genuine insects of nature and their socially-inept human imposters mimic each other to a staggeringly near perfect degree :

1) in the warm days of August and September, they are almost always completely unseen, unmentioned, and absent from anyone’s realm of conscious thought. You might occasionally spot a lone one in your travels, but you feel no threat and look upon them as the oddity they are.

2) as the Fall season progresses, you become more aware of them, now most often seen in pairs or trios as they busily flit around with a self-created air of importance and purpose for which, try as you might, you can’t find an objective basis.

3) Come early to mid-November, they now appear in masses, now always angry and belligerent for no apparent reason, and even over-eager to do their best to attempt to threaten and intimidate you. All the while, you look upon their puniness, and simultaneously marvel at the absurdity of their unjustified bravado, and contemplate upon the relative ease with which they can be crushed.

4) This fevered pitch of boorish behavior demonstrated by their feeble attempts at intimidation usually reaches it’s zenith on one date in late November each year, when in a single night after the numbers plummet on the thermometer in the natural world; and the numbers soar on the UGA side of the scoreboard — in that single, solitary night, the entire colony of yellow jackets is decimated and left in total annihilation, with not a single surviving bee, and the colony remains an unpopulated wasteland until the following spring when the cycle repeats itself all over again.

Whoever it was that chose Yellow Jacket as the representative for the full-of-fury-signifying-nothing bunch of whiners on North Avenue was an absolute genius. And if he/she came from Tech, he/she was the first and last.

Mark Bradley wrote a decent piece. There should be peace between the fans. However, in pointing out the differences in school populations, Mark failed to track where the fan base for each school comes from. Most fans are not alums. I’m a TECH fan from having lived close to the campus, but I earned no degree from TECH (GA.STATE instead). I brought my son up to be a TECH fan and go there and earn a degree. Most DAWG fans don’t teach their children to study at Georgia, they just teach their children to bark. OR if I should be a kinder, gentler TECH fan, they teach them to feed off the winning.

We TECH fans know Dawg fans out number us. Only winning will shift the tide over generations.

Sandy, You’re an idiot — for every engineer major playing football at Tech I’ll show you a pre-med major at Georgia. College football players pursuing the “hard” degrees is alawys the exception to the rule — across the entire country. Are you really that stupid to think just because they play football at Tech they are an engineering major? The entire reason Tech started their Industrial Management degree was so they could recruit better. Tech has a lot of non-engineering majors.

GA is not that good, I don’t understand how they can possibly think they are good, they have beaten absolutely nobody worth a flip and lost to the decent teams they played. Dawgs will struggle with Tech and their High School gimmick offense but again, beating Tech should not be anything to brag about this year.

Georgia tek fans – both of them – actually feel that Georgia tek’s # 35 ranking in US News & World Report as a national university translates to their student-athletes. Nothing is further from the truth. They are out to do anything and everything to beat UGA in sports, and cannot. They don’t care – neither of them.

Auburn has more graduates in City of 6 million than Georgia tek. Then, WHY do you CODDLE Georgia tek, AJ-C ?

Thomas Brown

November 26th, 2011
6:38 am

In fact, there are over 2 million with degrees from college who live in metro Atlanta. Georgia tek does not even rank among them. UGA dominates the readership of the AJ-C, yet daily, Mark Bradley specifically and by name CODDLES Georgia tek. It is absolutely contrary to the long-term viability of the AJ-C as a newspaper.
