The Heat Check returns a day late after a two-week hiatus, but hey … a return’s a return! And we begin with those who’ll be involved in a game of some interest come Saturday noon.
Georgia: Champion of the SEC East, the winner of nine in a row, the author of a rebound season. Think back to August: Would Georgia fans have taken all that and been happy? Sure they would. Heat Index: Mark Richt has gone from sitting atop the ol’ Hot Seat to sharing a warm moment with Mrs. Richt in front of 90,000 friends and neighbors.
Georgia Tech: Ranked in the Top 25, the winner of eight games after getting stuck on six last season, the author of a rebound season. Think back to August: Would Tech fans have taken all that and been happy? Yes, with a caveat. Heat Index: No Tech season can ever be ruled a complete success if the Jackets lose to Georgia.
Atlanta Falcons: They went to the no-huddle against Tennessee and looked great for three quarters. They wound up winning by six points. They’re 6-4, which isn’t bad. But there’s a caveat here as well. Heat Index: When was the last time we could say, “The Falcons really played a great game today?” When last did a postgame Mike Smith briefing not include a line about “things we need to fix”? When might those things get … well, fixed?
Atlanta Braves: Frank Wren hasn’t made a trade in a while. This isn’t like Frank Wren. Heat Index: “Nurse, could we take Mr. Wren’s temperature? He doesn’t seem himself.”
Atlanta Hawks: They’re not playing, which means attendance might actually go up. Heat Index: I have to confess I stole that line from occasional colleague Jeff Haws.
The team formerly known as the Thrashers: The Winnipeg Jets are fourth in the five-team NHL Southeast Division and 13th in the 15-team Eastern Conference. Heat Index: You can take the team out of the country, but making it win is another matter.
Local college basketball: The four area men’s teams — Tech, Georgia, Georgia State and Kennesaw State — are a collective 8-8, and the Bulldogs (3-1) lost their first real test Monday night to California by 24 points. (Georgia was outscored 48-21 over the final 25 minutes.) Of the four, the best win belongs to Tech, which beat 2011 Final Four participant VCU on Friday. Then the Jackets turned around and lost to LSU, which had lost to Coastal Carolina. Heat Index: I say again — this figures to be a chilly winter, hoops-wise.

The Dawgs defense should come prepared. This is the 2nd time CTG has seen the TO and will see the mistakes of last year and not repeat them. The Dawgs have the players to play good discilpined assignment football on defense. Shut down the run and make them pass. That would be funny, GT passing. Wish I had the same confidence in the offense. But there are some problems on offense. We need the O-line to show up, the RBs to be at full staff and Bobo, well I don’t know what to do about Bobo. I don’t think I can stand to watch us not move the ball and run our litttle RBs up the middle for 3 and out. the game is actually on Bobo’s shoulders. I’m feeling sick.

There were only two good things about UGA’s ugly win on Saturday: 1) they won and thus clinched the East, and 2) the coaches will be all over the team this week making sure they remember how bad they want to beat Tech. Should be a great game as usual. Here’s hoping that Geathers is ready for Saturday and together with Jenkins he can help plug the middle so the lb’s and safeties can cover the option. Last year UGA did not have a true ng, so the dt’s were playing the middle. Plus, the Dawgs will be playing for Munson’s memory!!!

DawgEd, how about learning a little about the game of football? Tech doesn’t throw chop blocks; they are CUT BLOCKS, and they are 100% legal. Tech has been called for an illegal chop block a maximum of twice this year, and one of those calls was questionable. Coaches everywhere and the majority of the officials know the difference. YOU SHOULD TOO!!!

INTERESTING MATCH-UP: Dawgs Rushing D vs Tech’s Rushing O. For grins I took the average of the Rushing D’s Tech’s O faced – average rank of 73rd. I them looked at the average of the Rushing O’s UGA’s Rushing D faced – average rank of 73rd. So we can’t say Tech’s rushing success is built on any different level of competition than that of UGA’s rushing D. Hopefully, it will come down to the same old chip on Tech’s shoulder and the Dawgs will beat them like the pocket protected geek squad they are!

I worry about the triple option. Grantham couldn’t stop it last year, Saban and Smart let GSU have 300 yards rushing against them last week. Heat check on Mr. Bradley. 1. It must be cold and lonely at the “Let’s can Mr. Richt” club meetings. 2. The bookies are taking Mr. Fox over Mr. Bradley when choosing the glass half full rather than the glass half empty for the UGA basketball team. A young team starts slow and gets better during the season. Conference games have not yet started. In fact, this was the first road game for this team and against a ranked opponent. When I played midget football *many* decades ago, body blocks (below the waist) were the first technique we were taught. In HS we ran the triple option (T-formation belly series) and used “crab blocks”, blocks at the legs while crabbing forward continuously using hands and feet on the ground. According to what I’ve read on blocking techniques over the last 3 years, crab blocking is still taught at the junior levels of football.

1-9 last 10 15 for the last 50. UGA favored on the road.

Turnovers have been their down fall and if they hold on to the pigskin it could be a long day at Bobby Dodd
But that’s just it. If you are going to run that offense and pitch the ball all over the place then you are going to turn it over and fumble. Its inherent to the system.
UGA Linebackers are going to be flying all over the place. The turnovers are coming.
My biggest fear isn’t Tech’s running game. I know we can stop that.
Its a matter of waiting them out and giving them the small ones until you get a big negative play or a turnover.
Its the play action pass and they get lucky and call the right play and we have a blown coverage or something.

What happens if we win? We might go to Champs Sports bowl instead of the Belk bowl or Sun Bowl? We can post in our yearly preview next year that we won? Tell me, what is the huge importance of this game? At least in the UGA-Florida game it usually has some influence on the SEC east. Our game has no influence on anything.

Good for Tech.
Point I am making is when you pitch the ball allot you are going to fumble allot.
Same as a passing team. If you throw allot of passes you are going to have more INT than a team that doesn’t.
It comes with the territory but Tech fans always use the fumbles as an excuse as to why they lost.
Well if you don’t want to fumble don’t pitch the ball so much.

headley – “Well if you don’t want to fumble don’t pitch the ball so much.”
There has not been a routine problem with losing the ball on pitches. 1 fumble was on the C to QB snap (ACC officials admitted they missed not calling offsides against Clemson), 1 on a punt return, 2 on a FB dives, 3 on QB keep/sacks (1 by the backup QB). These were in ACC games. Counting all games, there were 10 total lost fumbles.

Interesting drivel here – NOT.
The keys to this game do not include the Georgia D or CTG. The keys are:
1) Turnovers
2) Tech’s D. If GT gets 2 or 3 three-and-outs per half against Georgia’s offense, it will be difficult for the Dawgs to prevail. Failing that, Tech will need to put pressure on Murray and “cover somebody at least a little bit” as CPJ says. Coach Groh has a lot on his shoulders to prepare his troops for UGA.
3) Special teams. Any mistakes or big plays will factor heavily. and lastly,
4) Trick plays. Both coaches will try to sneak something in – more likely of function of guessing “when they least expect it”.
Course that’s just my opinion and everything I know about football can be typed, in capital letters, on a flea’s ass.
Looking forward to attending the game.

GTBob, it DOES have an effect on recruiting, although 2 or 3 wins in a row would have a more pronounced effect. Do you live in Georgia? If not, then perhaps you don’t find yourself CONSTANTLY subjected to snide remarks about the Jackets, and I don’t just mean on these blogs. I live in Augusta, and both the newspaper and the TV stations here give virtually no coverage at all to Tech. Unless Tech is playing Georgia or sometimes Clemson, the newspaper relies SOLELY on AP wire coverage of the games. The TV stations have an interview every week with Richt and members of the UGA team, but they have not had a single one with Johnson or any of our players the entire season. What does beating UGA mean to me personally? It means I and other Tech fans in the area can shove that win in their faces and say Tech has the best team in the state of Georgia, whether you choose to ignore that fact or not. Would it be the most important win in Tech’s history? Hell, no. But it would be the most important win since 2008….at least to me.

If GT gets more than 400 yards on the ground, they will declare victory. To he!! with the scoreboard. They have done it since CPJ arrived. Every year it is the same ole piehole crap. “We put up over 400 yards on the ground, the Dawgs just aren’t that good”. Who needs a scoreboard if you’re a GT fan. The run to pass ratio is 5:1 so of course the TO puts up ground yards. GT doesn’t pass the ball so maybe this year CTG will make them pass. Man coverage and eveyone else along the LOS. For the life of me, I can’t understand why anyone is a fan of the TO.

Joey, how stupid are you? Tech didn’t buy any rings for any victory, you jackazz. The rings to which you, and other trolls, CONTINUALLY refer, were rings given to the team by the CFA Bowl. The Tech PLAYERS decided what they wanted inscribed on the rings, and the PLAYERS decided that they wanted the score of the UGA game. Did UGA ever retired the number of an otherwise insignificant player for scoring a winning TD against Tech? You bet they did, bubba.

GTBob, I have an answer to your question, what does the GA game mean to Tech and why would it be an important win, 1st it is an instate rival, could help recruiting and give you bragging rights, 2nd it is against a top 15 BCS ranked team and would help your ranking, and finally 3rd it would improve your record and your Bowl Game selection, so yeah, I would say that this game means ALOT to GT and would be one of their top wins in the last decade. Having said all that I don’t think you will need to worry about it because you aren’t going to win.

My thoughts:
UGA will be tight and GT will be loose.
UGA is in a low confidence point. GT is at a medium confidence point.
CMR should give AM the day off, so to speak, and pound the ball up the middle like 2009.
CPJ should stick with the TO.
Both teams will try at least a few trick plays.
GT must stop UGA’s kick/punt returns to have a chance.
GT must get good field position on kicks/punts to have a chance.
UGA must force a few turnovers (not too hard to do).
Look for an interesting dual between GT’s linebackers and UGA’s running backs (if the good ones can play).

Maybe if a Braves manager was ever put in the position Mark Richt has been in for the better part of the past two seasons, to have to win or lose his job, we might see a little more inspired play with the Braves… for once.
But everyone knows that’s about as likely as Georgia beating LSU next week.
Hey, could happen. I’m surprised Mark Bradley hasn’t already predicted the upset since in his mind the Braves are destined for World Series glory any day now.
And of course that was only about a week or two after they put the finishing touches on one of the worst collapses in baseball history.
What is there to lose at this point, Bradley? Except, you know, even more credibility.
