Live from UGA’s clincher: Could Sugar be falling from the sky?

Athens – Overheard a fascinating conversation in the McDonald’s on Prince Avenue this morning, and I found it so fascinating I rushed to Ye Olde Stadium and started asking my colleagues if the gist of the conversation could in fact be true.
My fellow patron — didn’t catch his name, but he was wearing a Georgia cap, which I believe differentiates him from everyone else in town today — was speaking of Oklahoma State’s loss to Iowa State and saying it could clear the way for the Bulldogs to lose in the SEC championship game and still play in the Sugar Bowl. His reasoning: LSU and Alabama appear bound for the BCS title game, leaving the tied-to-the-SEC Sugar without a conference representative.
And this old eavesdropper put down his Sausage McMuffin and said, “Hmmmmm.”
Upon entering the press box, the first person I saw was esteemed colleague Tim Tucker, who’s the best person to see when you have a question about procedure. (Because Tim, I’ve learned over these past 27 1/2 years, knows everything.) He said he was pretty sure BCS rules precluded three teams from a conference being selected to the five BCS games, but he looked it up to be sure. I did the lazy thing and e-mailed Charles Bloom, the SEC’s director of communications. And here’s what we found:
There is a way for a conference to have a third team play in a BCS game, but there’s almost no way that waiver could apply to Georgia this year. From Bloom’s e-mail:
A third team from a conference can get into a BCS bowl if the top two teams from the conference are ranked 1 and 2 and participate in the national championship game and are not the conference champion. The conference champion would thus give a conference a third team in the BCS. Hope that helps.
It does. As odd as the final BCS standings figure to be, it’s impossible to imagine that LSU and Alabama could finish No. 1 and 2 with neither being SEC champ. For that to happen, LSU — assuming it beats Arkansas on Nov. 25 and wins the West — would have to lose to Georgia in the Dome but drop only one spot in the rankings. And if LSU loses to Georgia, then the Bulldogs’ destination is already moot: They’d be in the Sugar Bowl as SEC champs.
Ah, well. It sounded pretty good 45 minutes ago.
As for today’s game: Georgia needs to beat Kentucky to win the SEC East. Georgia will beat Kentucky by four touchdowns. Most years, the softest SEC scenario would be to be playing at home with Vanderbilit as the opponent. Let the record reflect that Vandy beat Kentucky by 30 points last Saturday. I say no more.

Steve, I wrote earlier in the week that Alabama has a better chance of winning the BCS title than it does the SEC — even if Arkansas beats LSU. Right now I’m thinking Alabama would be better off NOT playing in the SEC title game. That’s one chance to lose the tide won’t have.

Why are you people complaining about the fans/how full the stadium is? It might not be full but I am sure there are at least 85,000 there. No one is complaining about IC getting his ankle rolled, the problem with IC is with his suspension, being held out by CMR for a half, and his weekly injury, most fans have little faith in him, and his margin of error is limited. All anyone is saying is he needs to really bulk it up over the off season and become a little more mentally tough and smart to play in this league.

If LSU loses to Arkansas, then UGA will play Alabama, what if by some miracle UGA wins? If Oregon slips up against USC, the next 1 loss team in line would presumably be the Oklahoma/OSU winner. Would UGA not have a legitimate case to play in the BCS Title Game as the champion of the best conference in football? How do you leave an SEC school out?

I’ve never understood how anyone could take any pride in the UGA football team. Look at their history for the past forty years: how can anyone ignore Jan Kemp and the remedial studies scam, the Jim Harrick sleaze, the DUIs in the athletic office (not just Damon Evans), the DUIs and other arrests of players, the #1 party school label (for the most drunk students), the public urinators, the drug use, the suspensions and outright dismissals, the Fulmer Cup, and on and on?
As disgraceful and sickening as it is, I don’t see many alumni and fans demanding an end to this sleazy activity. It sets UGA apart as the kind of school that decent people despise and it’s become an embarrassment to the whole state of Georgia.
Will it ever end? Not while Mark Richt is at UGA. Richt is the biggest hypocrite in the United States. And even with the cheating and lawlessness that he ignores, he still doesn’t win the SEC.

UGA won the game so why all the BS about how they did it? UGA has won the right to play for the SEC championship and you just never know how things will turn out. I am very proud of how the team and the coaches responded to all the adversity!

Some positives. We won we are the SEC east champs. Walsh didn’t miss, he actually looked comfortable kicking again. Harton 5′6are 170 lbs (looks more like 5′4a maybe 5lbs 120 soak and wet) ran for 101the yards while being thrown around like a ragdoll. The defense looked real good. Especiall after the touchdown. Oh and did I mention we are the SEC East champs.

Georgia…..you just might keep the LSU game within 10 to 20 points…..because you defense is fairly good. But your offense….which struggled against a very poor Kentucky defense…..is going to have a big challenge against LSU’s defense. You better get a lot of turnovers.
Florida has a lot of work and recruiting to do before next year.
47-32 right now over Furman. But the Gators are showing very little effort or heart today.

As one poster just pointed out – if UGA had to play Ark, or LSU, or AL – anyone of those teams – they would not be SEC East champs – UGA had to have the worst conference schedule as for as level of competition goes – than any other team in the SEC. They played basically nobody except maybe Auburn – who should have lost to Utah State and 1-5 Miss St.

Richt is a product of the lawless environments of the University of Miami and Florida State University, where he learned well how to conduct himself in the most tawdry way, while pretending to the world to be a saint. Make no mistake – Richt is in coaching purely for the millions of dollars that have been wasted on him, and the millions more he will add until someone in Athens has the integrity and intestinal fortitude to run him out of town.

How many times have we seen a team come off of a big win and play flat against a weaker and more energized opponent. Not having your two biggest running backs doesn’t help. I’m just glad that we have the defense that we do because it’s days like this that they save your butt. This could easily have been a loss in those years when everyone was griping about our lack of defense.

Kentucky always plays UGA hard. No surprise there since half of their roster is from Georgia and Florida.
Glad for the V and the SEC East trophy and a chance to prove themselves on the field of battle in the Georgia Dome. The balls is oblong and sho’ do bounce funny.
Georgia is playing great defense and that in and of itself gives you a chance. It can be done!!

@ Michael. I think everyone questions Crowell’s heart. He has all the talent, but does not understand the toughness required to play in the SEC. He say out a game with a CONTUSION (bruise) on his lower leg a couple of games ago. He must think that his NFL card is already stamped, because if he tweaks ANYTHING, his but is on the bench jaw-boning with the other team members.
The messiah he is not. Either he comes to Jesus and learns what it takes to play for his team, or it should the be bench forever attached to his butt until he flunks out. The D was incredible, and what is interesting is that we have given up a drive or two at the start of each game of the last several. Then we lock down and give up nothing. The total yardage avg. will go down about 10 yards, and we were 4th in the nation before.

All the Crowell haters need to chill out. He will be fine. I can tell none of your have played major college football before. Crowell is a freshman who just last year played in class AA ball. He is a talent that has never seen talent like the SEC before in his life. He has had so far a excellent Freshman campain. Wait to the off season when he hits the weight room and get better conditioned. He will bulk up to 220 to 225 pounds and get stronger and faster. Its a process in motion people. Brewmaster, there may have been a reason your boss wasn’t working for you. If the team doesn’t perform you have to admit it, and correct the issues. Congrats on the SECE are in order, on the turn around, and on 9 straight–great accomplishments. But the O needs a lot of work by Saturday. The fact that we could not execute a screen cost us the SC game. I have to believe it is a practice thing. Murray is pretty smart. So you don’t practice screens and it loses the game. Who is to blame? If we correct the problem, we get better, and we are talking about 11-2 and Sugar for NY.
