A soggy salute to the Georgia Bulldogs, SEC East champs

Athens — On the dark night Georgia lost to South Carolina to slide to 0-2, the Bulldogs’ offensive coordinator went looking for spirits to lift. To his surprise, Mike Bobo found that spirits were unbowed.

“I’d tell them, ‘If we hang together and keep working, we’ve got a chance to be very good,’” Bobo said Saturday. “And every one of them said, ‘Coach, we’ve got a chance to be great.’”

As he spoke, Bobo sat in a chair in a locker room, the floor of which had been covered in plastic and doused with water. A nondescript game had ended with the Georgia Bulldogs champions of the SEC East for the first time since the distant year 2005.

“We grabbed water bottles and threw them around the room,” said wide receiver Marlon Brown, scorer of Georgia’s only touchdown this day, and even the 51-year-old head coach got in the soggy swing of things. Seeking to slide across the wet surface, Mark Richt made it only halfway.

“I thought it was going to be fun,” Richt said of his maneuver. “I can’t say it was fun.”

For Richt, the day’s overriding emotion seemed more relief than exultation. He arrived from Florida State in 2001, won the SEC in 2002 and took his Bulldogs to the SEC championship game three times in four years. Then, having set the bar high, Richt went five years without a return to the title game, and when this season began there was no assurance this coach would have this job come 2012. And then the 2011 Bulldogs started 0-2.

“When we lost to South Carolina [the second of the two losses], a lot of things go through your mind as a coach,” Richt said. “Sometimes you’ve got to make something up — you don’t want to lose your team. But [that night] I could stand there with a straight face; it was very easy to believe in them. And I said, ‘If we don’t spit the bit … if we keep grinding, we can do it.’ ”

On Saturday, his Bulldogs finished this latest drill. Yes, they were aided by a schedule that eased after the back-to-back whammy of Boise State and South Carolina, but it isn’t as if Georgia backed into anything. It has won nine consecutive games, beating Tennessee and Florida and Auburn en route, and it finished 7-1 in SEC play. (Let’s note that South Carolina took the East with a 5-3 record last season.)

Richt: “It’s hard to win nine in a row. We’ve done something special.”

The details of a forgettable Victory No. 9 — Georgia trailed Kentucky, which had lost by 30 points to Vanderbilt last week, after 29 minutes and led only 12-10 after three quarters — will soon be forgotten. The ramifications will linger long. Said cornerback Brandon Boykin: “I’ll definitely remember this game for clinching a championship on Senior Day. Everyone had so much riding on this game.”

Richt again: “I told the players this [East title] was the most meaningful to me. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but it felt like it today.”

Here he laughed, but there was no comedic content in the job Richt and his staff did to keep this team buoyant after a start that might have sunk another bunch. “It wasn’t just 0-2,” Richt said, “but 0-2 coming off 6-7 [of last season] and with everything swirling around. We did a really good job handling all the noise.”

Said linebacker Jarvis Jones, the sudden star of a ravenous defense that held Kentucky to 13 yards and one first down after halftime: “It’s not how you drive; it’s how you arrive. We kept fighting, and look at us now.”

Said cornerback Branden Smith: “All [the 0-2 start] did was bring us together as one family.”

Said Brown: “We kept grinding.”

Even after 11 games and nine victories, it’s hard to know just how good Georgia is. The Auburn victory was the only time the Bulldogs thrashed an SEC opponent, and for long stretches Saturday they flailed against the worst Kentucky team of the new millennium. But they won. Since the night of Sept. 10, they’ve done nothing except win.

Said Richt: “I don’t know if we’re a great team, but we’re SEC East champs.”

In the grand scheme, that’s all that matters. Georgia headed back to the big game in the big city, back where it once belonged. Full credit to this team and this coach for taking it there.

On a weekend when it seemed that many favored teams came out flat, UGA found a way to rally and put the game away to clinch a spot in the SEC Championship game. That is what truly great teams do. Check out Okie State and Clemson. Id take 12 of these type of wins, just win baby! Im so proud to be a Bulldog!!!

After being a very vocal critic for the last 5 years (at least), I feel confident in saying the Junkyard Dawgs are back. I just hope we can find somebody to run the ball next week. It would be a big downer after this accomplishment today to lose to the NATS next week. Get you head right, Thomas! Crowell, suck it up!

Timing, work and luck. Timing : been a while since Georgia’s been to the title game; Work: obviously, the team and coaches worked very hard to overcome 0-2: Luck: the SEC east was down this year.

It’s great that the Bulldogs are back in the cat-bird seat But man, I hate to watch the way they play. I want the SEC East champ to dominate someone, like they did Auburn. Kentucky was just a good high school team this year and we couldn’t stomp them like Vanderbilt did. Oh. well. Go Dawgs. But next year, I want to see a polished team. A smash-mouth team. A team that starts and finishes games with authority. Is that asking too much?

I’ll take an ugly win over a pretty loss any day. Murray was off today, but the lack of a viable running threat probably had a lot to do with it. Harton and Malcome need to find the handle. Defense can win the next two games, but not if we keep putting it on the ground on our own end. I’d feel totally comfortable having Thomas back. He runs harder and is much more durable than #1.

The only TD Kentucky scored was off one of our turnovers. This Defense is BY FAR the best since the 2002-03 seasons. Ogletree and Jarvis beat their guy on EVERY play and Geathers/Jenkins just clog the interior running lanes. Then you’ve got Boykin who has become a shut down corner, and Rambo and S. Williams hitting people harder than anyone since Greg Blue was in Athens.

I honestly think Bama would have some serious problems moving the ball against us. LSU… not as confident. Go Dawgs – EAST CHAMPS!!!!

Hi Mark. First I wish to congratulate the Dawgs and Russ on reaching the SEC championship showdown. Nine wins in a row are nine wins regardless of who the opponents were. That being said. If the Dawgs play like this at the Georgia Dome they may as well RSVP out right now. For most of the game it was difficult to determine which team was competing for a playoff berth and which one was primping for next season. My wife asked me what was wrong with the Dawg offense to which I replied they must have been hungover from partying the night before. It was the only thing I could think of which made sense. Aaron Murray was awful. That tiny runner was okay but the fumbles were not. The Dawg FG kicker resurrected back into one of the best in the game. Thankfully since Mark Richt is a big believer in FGs. Terrible playcaller Mike Bobo was on a roll for several games but fell back into a rut with inexplicable inept play calls which left those at Sanford Stadium in a justifiable booing mood. I could not be prouder of the Dawg defense. I could tell after the Wildcats put up their 10th point that the proud Dawgs were determined to close the door at that point. They did. The biggest takeaway of the contest took place right before intermission when a fumble recovery allowed the Dawgs to go into the lockerrom with a 12-10 lead at instead of in a 10-9 hole. Those four FGs were important. The lone Dawg TD ensured the margin was more than a single score. The Dawg offense was not mentally prepared to play against a totally inferior opponent. That is on Richt and Bobo. I have nothing but praise for the defensive coach. The Dawgs are a Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde act this season. I only hope Dr Jekyll shows up in Atlanta. No matter who the opponent is! :)

P.S…..That Furman final score was 55-32. But Florida is not very good this year….fortunately for Georgia. I agree IC deserves the criticism he’s getting.
Crowell may indeed be hurt.
But he has shown from the very first game that he has a propensity to take himself out for no apparent reason.
Not only does he do that…he sits on the sidelines seemingly unconcerned about the game.
At halftime, Richt wasn’t certain IC was done for the game.
That tells me he felt the young man could have played.
IC will need to grow up soon if he is to have an impact on the SECCG.

Every team has one or two games like this in a season. Difference is, last year UGA would have lost this game. This year, they found a way to win. (Can we say defense). Look at Oklahoma/Texas Tech, Clemson/NC State, etc. The one thing I am convinced of more than ever though is that UGA NEEDS KEITH MARSHALL!

It depends on which UGA team shows up to play.
If our D stuggles to stop Tech…then we will struggle against LSU.

If we can run the ball effectively and our D plays as it has the past few games…we have a chance.

The funniest comments on this board about how LSU is lucky to get the turnovers. If you watched them this season you’d know that their strongest and fastest players are on defense. It’s on purpose. When the other team is behind 10 points in the second half, it’s over. The more the other team tries to throw to catch up, the worse the rout. Enjoy the game against Tech, little doggies. While the doggies were losing to Boise, LSU was demolishing Oregon. Top teams don’t lose to Boise. Second-tier ones do. That is all.

Murray and the receivers looked like they’d been looking at different playbooks all week and I’m surprised Crowell can even get out of bed every morning without hurting himself.

They desperately need to stop recruiting these lanky, weakling RBs. We need some beef at RB for crying out loud, someone that can run people over instead of dancing around like a ballerina and getting leveled when the wind blows the wrong direction. Just give Figgins the ball, I bet he could carry a pile for 3-4 yards a carry most of the time…dude is a beast.

Everyone of them said that? Was he meeting with them individually or as a group? Did they say it in unison? I’d imagine that sounded kind of weird.

If not, did they each give that response one after another. It was probably kind of inspirational and witty the first few times, but after the 3rd or 4th one said it, it had to get tiring to hear and lose much of it’s meaning.

Georgia definitely showed today that they can win without the offense. Murray choked his way through the game much like he has in most pressure situations with poor passing selection. I wish Ritch would start checking the RBs for “feminine” product usage before the game and playing guys who have a little guts out there like Harton as starters. I swear Crowell is digressing into one of the cheerleaders. Never seen a player laughing and cutting up after an injury. How many times has he sandbagged the dogs this year? I am counting 4 separate games now.

Overall, dogs just need to maintain the same focus that they had with the AU game and I see a potential SEC trophy coming our way.

There are a lot of Morons on this Blog. If you are a non-UGA Fan please tell me why you even care about UGA.
1.Why you complain about a weak schedule. You never say anything when our schedule is among the the 10 toughest in College Football. Many of these games are scheduled years in advance.
2. If you are a Tech fan, it is ok to complain. I personally never have any idea who you are going to play from week to week, unless I see it in the paper. No, I don’t watch your games & don’t care about you except for once a year. You can win them all, except against us. I derive no pleasure when you have a bad year.
3. If you are a fan of a team that is down this year that we beat this year, you probably beat us the past few years when we were down.(Exception, Auburn & Tech).
4.I don’t care about you unless we play you & if we don’t, I don’t care whether you win or lose and again don’t derive pleasure when you do lose.
5.If you are a Alabama, Arkansas, or LSU Fan, it is OK to talk about how bad GA is, because one of you will play us. If you don’t pull for those teams, why would you care? The worst that can happen is that GA can lose, but we are going to play in the Championship Game. Should we just not show up?
I just don’t get it. Sweep around your own front porch. Don’t seek pleasure from other people’s pain.

You Dawg fans who keep bashing Tech enjoy yourselves all you want. The thing is… Tech alumni and fans have lives that don’t depend entirely on what a bunch of kids does on Saturday afternoons. College sports are fun to follow, but the biggest reason for going to college is to get an education.

UGA fans don’t seem to care about anything but football, and they don’t care if their players are enrolled in silly majors that no parents who are paying the bills would send their kids to UGA for. The very few football and basketball players who graduate have no job opportunities and end up unemployed or working in menial jobs that hardly require a college degree.

Georgia Tech is a real school with serious academic standards, and that includes scholarshipped athletes. UGA has a long history of being a drunken party school, where parents send their kids for an easy degree, even if the degree itself is worthless.

Jan Kemp exposed the obscene sleazy crap going on at UGA with athletes being enrolled in courses a ten-year-old kid could pass. That was almost three decades ago, and nothing has changed. If anything, the abuses are more blatant today. Way too many illiterate morons are being recruited, and the very high arrest rate shows clearly that Richt does not care if his players have any morals or character.

The bottom line is that most Tech fans have very good jobs and productive lives that don’t depend on Tech’s football record for their happiness in life. It would be great to beat UGA more often, but when you put scholar-athletes up against dummy-athletes, it’s usually no contest.

So keep on posting your scores all you want, especially since you’re home with plenty of time on your hands. I wish you well, maybe you’ll get lucky and get your old janitorial job back before your unemployment checks stop coming.

If we don’t turn the ball over, we beat Tech. Now, Bama or LSU will have their hands full with our defense. Neither of them have much of a vertical passing game and that plays to our advantage as we are very good against the run. If our o-line shows up, then our offense will put more presure on their defense than they will put on ours. If no more than one turnover, we will win.

Georgia Tech had the nation’s best average SAT score for football players, 1028 of a possible 1600, and best average high school GPA, 3.39 of a possible 4.0. But because its student body is apparently very smart, Tech’s football players still scored 315 SAT points lower than their classmates.

Many schools routinely used a special admissions process to admit athletes who did not meet the normal entrance requirements. More than half of scholarship athletes at the University of Georgia, the University of Wisconsin, Clemson University, UCLA, Rutgers University, Texas A&M University and Louisiana State University were special admits. . . At Georgia, for instance, 74 percent of athletes were special admits compared with 7 percent of the student body as a whole.

According to the NCAA figures, Tech posted a graduation rate of 55 percent for football, 27 percent for men’s basketball and 77 percent for all men’s and women’s sports combined. The Yellow Jackets’ all-sports rate was 11th in the ACC…

Georgia posted a graduation rate in Tuesday’s report of 65 percent for football, ranking fifth in the SEC, and 43 percent for men’s basketball, seventh in the SEC. The Bulldogs’ all-sports rate of 79 percent tied for fourth in the SEC.

I don’t just judge my coach by one or two seasons out of 10. Especially when we run a great program that hasn’t been on probation. GT97. . . There is no comparison between the academic standards at Tech and UGA. If Tech did accept as many special admits as we did then they would compete more consistently for ACC championships and would be more of a rival to us than they actually are. For example, we have not been Florida’s rival over the last 20 years. They have won too many of the games for us to be their rival and Tech is not our rival because we have won too many of the games over the last 20 years. Tech should be excited about beating us because they do not match up well talent wise. Most kids go to Tech because they want to get a degree and play College football-Kids go to UGA because they want to go get a degree and play Pro football. That speaks volume about the caliber of athletes both schools recruit. Without a lot of special admits, any Coach that can win 9 games 3 out 5 years at Tech should be given a Paul Hewitt type contract.

GT & LSU are licking their stinger butts and chops, respectively to line up against The Dawgs.
If GT plays the way they did against Clemson it’s gonna be ugly.
If LSU plays an average game it will be even uglier.

The only ranked team we’ve beaten in over 2 years is Auburn and they stink.
Not exactly a ringing endorsement for our Dawgs.

The responsibility lies squarely on Richt.
In fairness, let’s wait and see his team’s performance v GT & (probably) LSU.

FLA Dawg, our O-Line was not the problem tonight. Our number 1 RB going out with an ankle injury early and having to use a 5-6 175lb. 3rd/4th teamer plus 4 fumbles was more the problem.

FLA Dawg . . . SEC east title means little. Wow, really? I wonder if the Gamecocks, Gators, Vols feel that way? Sure 2009-10 were bad years and we lost to ranked and unranked teams during that 2 year period but it is not our fault that the teams on the schedule this year were unranked when we played them. . .we beat them! This has been a tremendous turnaround improvement over the last 2 years.

We (UGA) can play with LSU, they have a dominating defense, as do we. They have an inconsistent
offense, as do we. Arkansas scares me much more than LSU or, for that matter, Alabama. They’ve got the type of offense, and the gunslinger coach, that could hurt us.
Either way, the Dogs are going to the Dome.
Thomas suspended again? Is that his ‘third strike’? Run him off. He’s only a kid, but apparently learning lessons is not in his makeup.
Crowell…talented, but I don’t think we can depend on him.
Boo Malcolme showed me something today…showed me he oughta be at a Div IA school. Finally…

So is this where the Gawga fans hang out? The AJC? :)

Anyways, yall ready for a beat down in the dome? I hate to tell you, I looked at your schedule, is anyone you’ve beaten this year ranked right now? I mean this is the biggest pansy schedule I’ve ever seen in my life in the SEC. Tomorrow the rankings will come out and watch the top 3 spots go to SEC West teams and you haven’t played a single one and yet you’d think you guys beat an undefeated Tennessee, Florida and Auburn to win the East.

You beat nobody 9 times in a row including Ole Miss and Miss St? Those are your signature wins over the best division in the SEC? What a joke.

Yall come on over to tigerdroppings.com, we’d love to talk to you. See how you can justify the celebration… that’s if you get past Georgia Tech. I’m not thinking you will. I don’t know what happened in that Auburn game but the rest of your wins against normal division 1 teams has been lucky and laughable. But Auburn is all freshman and sophmores so that’s probably the reason. They’re weird right now but hey, they won the national championship so what do they care.

Speaking of that, when is the last time you guys won 9 in a row? Or a national championship? Please tell me I don’t have to go back to Her$hell Walker days do I?!?!? :D Or how about the last time you won 2 in a 5 year span with 2 different coaches? How long have you had Richt again? By the way, how tall is the QB of yours? He looks small. Love all of the interceptions and fumbling and bumbling they were showing on sports center. I’d sworn UK beat you.

Man this is toooo easy. Oh well, we just need to concentrate on Arkansas, I know I know. But man alive Mizzou has to be excited about being in the SEC East. They’ll probably win it next year.

BTW, who said we have an inconsistent offense? Want to read off some scores to me? And what’s up with that fat dog?

I think Florida is down for good. So is UT. The SEC East is non existent. That’s all there is to it. Like Cowherd said, he’d take the SEC West over every conference in the land. I don’t blame him.

By the way, congrats on 9-0. When is the last time you guys did that and please don’t tell me it was when Hershel Walker was there!?!? :D Please don’t tell me it’s been 30 years?! And please don’t tell me you’re still celebrating a 30+ year old national championship like it was yesterday. And trust me, I know you are.

Speaking of national championships, let’s see. We won 2 in 5 years with 2 different coaches. UT won the first. Florida won 2. Alabama won 1. Auburn won 1. Where you guys? :D Oh that’s right, getting beat down by Boise. I watched that game. Pattin’ your helmets for dear mercy. Who did Boise lose too?

What is your schedule next year? We playing? You going to have a team next year? Suspensions? Drugs? What’s up? Oh, look here is your 2012 schedule… Buffalo? South Carolina? Loss. Florida Atlantic? Is this for real? Vanderbilt? Well, they’re getting better. They could win the east if Mizzou doesn’t. Tennessee? They still playing football? No. At Alabama? Oh… oh there you go. :D You’re done. At Kentucky? With the replay I saw on Sports Center I swear they were about to show a loss. Instead CMR was having a private moment in front of the crowd? That’s kind of childish. Florida? Weren’t they losing to Furman? Ole MIss? My goodness. We were 35-0 on them midway through the 2nd. Auburn? They’re all freshman right now. They’re going to get dangerous real soon. Georgia Southern? Okay, as if you didn’t have enough paid wins by this point. GT? Who knows. They’re weird.

Man, I wish we were in the SEC East. We could play our second string by the second quarter.

We’re LSU. We talk trash. Then we walk all over you. Get used to it. We’re concentrating on Arkansas and the national championship, looking at your record… and that’s if you beat Georgia Tech… you’re still a foregone conclusion.

You beat Vandy… barely? Vandy? You beat a team Vandy beat by 9 today? And you’re throwing gatorade and making out on the sideline? Really?

:D

You realize I know you guys are trying to figure out what bowl you’re going to after you lose to us. It’s very obvious.

But let’s just say we lose to Arkansas. You’ll get crushed by them too. So now it’ll be University of Tennessee, Us, Florida, Us again, Florida, Alabama, Auburn and Arkansas and you still haven’t been a factor.

We’re not going to look past Arkansas, trust me. We’ll focus on them, shut them down, sack their QB as much as possible and run through their D. That’s the simple plan. It’s UGA we can look past and be 100% right.

It is a win, but UGA cannot afford another year with Bobo running the offense. The defense looked great and Grantham knows how to make adjustments, but the OC cannot seem to make adjustments or a decent game plan. It is time to get rid of Carlton Thomas. He is becoming a major problem and a negative influence on the enitre team. Crowell needs to suck it up. I hope this season really lets him know that he will have to do more in the offseason to prepare for SEC competition. UGA needs to bring in two or three quality RBs for next season. Harton is good but he can’t continue to take the pounding for the whole game and Malcome looks like he can contribute throughout the game. He is a big bruising runner and UGA will need that. If only GA had the consistency on offense as it does on defense. Then I would say this is truely a very good football team. However, if GA doesn’t scrap its current plays for the running game and replace it with some misdirection plays it’ll forever be predictable and its success against good defenses like AL and LSU will forever be in question. Just too darn vanilla. How they can look so good on offense the past two games and be outplayed by a defense that is ranked near the bottom of the NCAA is beyond comprehension. I’m happy they won but not happy the way they had to win it. At some point this inconsistency on offense will derail this wonderful streak and the sad part of it is it doesn’t have to be this way.

UGA is an average team in an AWFUL division…the best win was vs a 7-4 Coastal Carolina team or a 7-4 Auburn team…combined record of the teams you beat 45-53…including 6 teams with LOSING records…they only beat three teams with winning records…one of those is Coastal Carolina !!
They may lose to Ga Tech, definitely lose to the SEC Championship opponent and if they play anybody good in a bowl game they get drilled… likely end of the season record 9-5 with three losses in a row… what will they say about ole Richt then ?

Oh yeah definitely! The good thing now is we don’t have Willie Martinez running the defense anymore. When you sit there and trash a team that may go 10-2 on who they play you begin reaching for straws. Georgia’s defense is legit. If you think otherwise then you are crazy or a moron. Whats the excuse if we win the SEC, because I gurantee people already have them ready to type if that happens.
Auburn beat a lot of mediocre teams in close games last year. Then when they won it all people had to start reaching for the Cam Newton Pay for play and all that stuff. Just go look at the Auburn scores last year and I bet some of you said every week Auburn would lose because of their close games. I know I did and looked like a fool in the end.

Great is where you go undefeated. Lets not be kidding ourselves, if you wanna be known as a very good football team then you’ll have to finish the rest of the year 3-0. Yes going out 12-2 will be hard to repeat by alot of future georgia teams.
No doubt winning 12 in a row is almost unheard of. If you wanna rise to greatness, then you have to beat teams such as #1 in the nation teams, put home streaks together and such. I think our defense hasnt been this good since georgia went 13-1.
But the true test will come playing Ga. Tech. This should tell you how good your run defense is, by playing a team that masters the running game. If you cant stop their option and dives then it will be a long day for you guys heading to the SEC Championship.
Best believe that Ga. Tech will be jacked up playing us. Then add the fans to the mix and their players, could have a recipe for an upset or a blowout. Playing against the run requires you being totally disciplined and containing your position.
Better watch alot of films on Tech and know where you should line up at. Theyre no joke. They’ll keep running the same play until they get big runs or until you get far ahead of them or stop the run. They try to wear down defenses and confuse players so watch and learn.
I dont expect a blowout from a big rivalry but if they get ahead then it’ll be hard to catch back up cause running the ball controls the clock.
Beat Ga. Tech and beat LSU or win the SEC and come back and tell me how great you are. You either have greatness in your heads or you have it on the field. Which is it?

We are SEC east champs. I laugh when some posters say they want UGA to win big. This is the SEC Kentucky has several players from GA on its team as does most other SEC teams so it is never going to be easy. We are 9-2 and while I wish Crowell was a bit healthier but then I did not have a 300 + lineman roll on my ankle either. I would much rather have him for Tech or SEC championship game then yesterday.

More More Thing From Golden Dawg - Lay off Crowell

November 20th, 2011
5:44 am

One more thing: Lay off Crowell. So he’s not Hershel: Who is.
However, the kid is an ultra talented 18 year-old TRUE freshman.

Even Moreno had a redshirt year to prep his body for these 230lb, 4.4 corners hitting him at full speed; not to mention the linebackers and safeties. Richt tries to save him for the Florida, Auburn and GT. If he plays hurts and is out for the year, then what? Think about what’s best for him (and UGA) in the long run.

So, please Stop Layrating your own players. It does not endear the 2012 recruits to UGA.

Note to recruits and parents:
Please remember that these negative comments are NOT from UGA fans. UGA fans love all Dawgs – without conditions. We put UGA’s interest ahead of our emotions. We’ve been through the lows and we’ll be enjoying the highs for the next SEVERAL years. Come and GET ON THE BUS with us.

Congratulation to this Team and Coaching staff for winning the SEC East, yes they won it by beating 7 SEC opponents in a row. Great feat in my book, best and toughest conference from top to bottom to play in PERIOD. This is a tough team because they have some real leaders who seem to be able to step up their games to help overcome injuries, suspensions, distractions etc.

The mark of a good team, is to be able to win ugly sometimes. UGA did that yesterday and deserves the chance to play in the SEC championship. The defense once again, came through big. The offense proved one glaring point and that is we need a deeper corp. of running backs. I also though, yesterday that the play calling took a step backwards, since as soon as Crowell, was lost to a injury once again, Bobo stuck with the same game plan like Crowell was still there. We sent a very small back in there and ran him to death. To his credit, he did a credible job because the OL, continued to block well and clear the lanes on the run. If not for the OL, we might have lost the game with the play calling. We also got a pretty good idea of our need for some OL’s. They have done a serviceable job and hats off because they give it everything on the field, but at times yesterday, the pass protection was not there. Our Defense won the game for us, as we were able to rattle their young QB, and keep him off balance all through the game. Our run defense was very good and continues to improve.
It was an ugly win, but never the less, UGA is the east champion, and they have turned it around this season, no matter the opponent. Now, UGA needs only to beat a weak Tech. team, do a respectful appearance in the SEC Championship, and win a decent bowl game, and we should have a decent, if not top 10 recruiting class, and be much more ready for prime time next year. Our defense looks to be in pretty good shape for next year, but we do have some glaring needs on offense, but winning like they have been doing, will make recruiting a lot easier this year.

Tiger Droppings,

The hope scholarship is in trouble due to less people participating in the lottery and a little mismanagement since it is a government run program and government is a synonym for mismanagement. You need to go back to your tech. board and leave football talk to the fans that have a team that plays in a real conference, with real athletes. Bragging how tech. beat a real team in Clemson, has now been proven to be a falsehood. They are like most of the ACC teams you play, mediocre at best. UGA’s run defense will stop your TO game, and if you have to actually depend on your QB’s arm to have to pass, and gain yards, UGA will have a field day. Your OL, hasn’t got the size to control the line of scrimmage, and you haven’t got an answer for the LB and safety corp. UGA will present you with. Even if Murray has an off day, like this one today, you still can’t stop the pass, as your DB’s don’t have an answer for the WR’s UGA has against you. In your case, it is better to be thought a fool, than open your mouth and remove all doubt.

Are we “fair weathered fans” “bandwagons”? Thats something children say. Being logical and irrational has nothing to do with being a Georgia fan. Do you love your kids? Do you tell them the truth or what they want to hear?
Its called constructive criticism or to some nay-sayers anti georgia. This is our political correctness society of today where you cant even make a comment without it offending someone. Theres telling someone the reality of things to make them better or the B.S. some people feed those kids.
I dont mind comments as long as its not a personal attack on the players and coaches families or racial eptiones.
Things to build on and what needs to be done or changed.
Its fun to get on here and vent or just tell it like it is with respect to other teams we play. To get on here and bash other Colleges just because their our rivals is childish. Its a sport, not a KKK Rally.
Its something we all enjoy on Saturday’s to watch, spend time with friends, shout and jump up, get mad and curse our teams.
But certainly an American Tradition that very few have the luxury of watching or being a part of. Not a game where you wanna hurt someone over or call them personal names and demmagogue because they root for the other team.
Yeah we get sensitive when someone attacks our team and/or players. Then counter attack with threats, name calling, and even demeaning ones character.
In the end we’re all Americans who love this game and want the best for our teams. We all do. So please remember it is just that and people are entitled to their opinions, even if their on the same side as you are.
As long as someone is acting with respect and dignity, without personal attacks then give them room and the opportunity to vent their opinion.

KY’s D sure had Murray confused – he looked terrible. He was so bad, Richt/Bobo lost confidence in him late, not even attempting a pass on that 4th and 6. You can bet PJ will watch that film.

Mark,

I would love to see you write an article about Coach Richt and our running backs. Not what they have or have not accomplished, but this:

Carlton Thomas SUSPENDED AGAIN! Mark Richt is at a crossroads in my opinion again. I was crucified last year in an opinion piece I wrote regarding Richt’s handling of Washaun Ealey and his pitiful one game suspension for violating, and in fact, outright lying to his coaches. Richt was too soft in my opinion in dealing with that situation.

Well, for the third time this year, Carlton Thomas was suspended from a game. Crowell was hurt, AGAIN! Injuries are one thing. Unreliability is something else altogether.

Richt finds himself here again and Georgia is trying to win the SEC with inconsistency and unreliability on a personal level at the running back position. It is time for Richt to clear out those he cannot depend on and recruit guys for the position who don’t act like knuckleheads.

The Dogs have a freshman RB who was really a great HS player. He walked on at UGA and could help if they would give him a chance. I saw him play twice in GHSA playoffs and he got it done. Not the biggest, not the fastest, but he doesn’t fumble and he runs for positive yards. Let the long hairs sit and put in Kyle K coach. Just give him a darn chance to show what he can do.

Florida is indeed down this year. But, if you think Florida is forever down, you are a complete foot from Tigerland. There is a lot of very young talent in Gainesville (49 out of 72 scholarship players are freshmen and sophs)…..and much more is on the way. And from watching him play and exhibit all th innate QB skills and athleticism that Brantley lacks, I believe the future is very bright for the Gators with Jacoby Brissett at QB. And Driskell is just a freshman too. But time will tell. Muschamp has had a tough year, but I think he will get Florida back real soon…..much, much sooner than it took Georgia to get back in the SEC East driver’s seat.

And Droppings……if you look at Georgia honestly……they look like a top 5 team for next year.

It’s great that we’re in the SEC championship, but let’s keep this in perspective. We had a very easy schedule this year. We just struggled against a horrible Kentucky team and we did not play Alabama, LSU, or Arkansas, i.e. the best teams in the conference. Florida and Auburn were way down this year. I truly wish I didn’t believe this, but I am more convinced than ever that Bobo is not and will never be an offensive coordinator that can take Georgia to level of the Bama’s and LSU’s. If I see one more 3rd and 10 from midfield where the call is to run a 5′7″ 170lb. walkon right up the middle when you’ve got arguably the best QB in the SEC and all of your receiver healthy, I may blow a gasket!!! At the very least I’ll need a new TV. I suggest giving him the title of “Asst. Head Coach/QB Coach”, keep his salary the same forever so he can raise his 27 kids and CMR won’t feel guilty, AND FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT’S DECENT HIRE A REAL OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR!!! Bottom line, does anyone really believe that Bobo is the BEST Offensive Coordinator we could have running our offense at Georgia? We can do so much better.

Bob Dawg….

Bama runs the pistol offense in their pro syle system as well. Weis put in the pistol because Brantley couldn’t turn and hand off the ball to his backs either from the I-formation or from the shotgun in the Georgia game after he re-twisted it during that geme. In the pistol, Brantley can hand the ball off without turning on his ankle, and it has made the Gators better on offense with Brantley’s type of injury. If Weis had instituted it in the Georgia game, maybe the offense would have performed better throughout that game. So……Weis seems to be very innovative as an OC…….

@ davereaux. Yes I did type that and I am somewhat serious. Why Not? I feel UGA can hang with LSU/Bama on any given Saturday. LSU/Bama offenses are good but UGA defense is becoming very, very good. The question is can UGA move ball on offense on either? Anything can happen. It could be a defensive war with either…..just the type of game I like to see. UGA will probably have the crowd advantage, and a home like atmosphere. Now, if we can win SEC, all the other scenarios I laid out before are probably a long shot, but it could happen.

None of you guys can actually think that GA is a decent team, do you? The only 2 semi-decent teams on their schedule they lost to. How can Ga draw Ole Miss and Miss State while the rest of the east has to play at least one of the trio of LSU, AL or Ark? The dawgs finally won in Jax but did you really win that game, looked to me like FL just plain lost that game. This was the worst FL team since 1979. The Dawgs struggled yesterday with the worst team in the east. The east sucks this year and your east champioship is a farce.

If you had any class, you would hand the trophy to SC, they beat everyone in the east, they just didnt get the gift of Ole Miss and MSU.

TampaGator

You guys are getting very excited about a defense that has done this:

1. Were dominated by a very good Boise offense.
2. Were dominated by SC when SC had Lattimore and Garcia.
3. Beat some kind of team from the Charleston area
4. Beat a horrible Ole Miss offense with no QB and no Head Coach
5. Beat a decent Tennessee offense….but one without Hunter at WR (as the Gators did)
6. Beat a horrible MSU offense……with no speed in a spread offense.
7. Beat a horrible Vandy offense before they made the switch at QB to become much better.
8. Beat a horribe New Mexico State offense.
9. Beat a bad and very limited Florida offense in transition and with a one-legged QB
10. Beat a very bad Auburn offense without a QB to speak of.
11. Beat a horrible Kentucky offense

So….before you go crowing Grantham the second coming as a coach…….wait to you beat Ga. Tech (has an excellent offense) and LSU (as a very good offense and a great defense). When you do that….then crown him with those Richt blessed crown of thorns! Until then….be happy with your schedule this year and the schedule and injuries both Florida and SC had instead this year. Congrats Dawgs. Randy hope your right but wrong on us not gettting to Atlanta. LSU looks really focused right now. Alabama is really banged up with 6 starters sitting yesterday. Dawgs vs LSU realistically the difference is LSU’s defense which has offensive weapons stuck in defensive body which Georgia lacks, but that is why the game is played. Who would have predicted last night. Yesterday was a day in which you forgot about style points and just wanted to walk away with a win regardless of the opponent. Hope I am wrong on this but my gut tells me Petrino returns to the Dome and the Dawgs take out revenge on behalf of Bulldog Nation and Falcon Fans with a major beat down

Florida: Fla Atlantic – Joke game
UAB – Joke game
Tenn – Tenn would win 2 out of 3 against Florida
Kentucky – Solid Win
Ala – Got the crap beat out of you
LSU – Got more crap beat out of you
Auburn – Just got beat
Georgia – Got beat way more than score indicated
Vanderbilt – Ref’s gave you that game
SC – Got beat without Lattamore or Garcia
Furman – Was exposed until the 4th. quarter

Nothing good in site for Florida.

Glad you are not in Foley’s job. Muschamp and Weis will be around for a long, long time…..and will coach the Gators to a bunch of titles I believe. They are obviously struggling with the transition of spead players this year….particularily on the OL…..but they will get it fixed very, very soon (they are putting together an outstanding recruiting class of the type of players they want and need). I am proud to have Muschamp and Weis as coaches for the Gators. Maybe you should be too….if you want to live in Gator Nation. Foley made a mistake with Zook, but not with Muschamp.

Muschamp is learning head coaching lessons this year too. I saw the same things early…..but not recently. I think he realized he is not an assistant anymore and needs to handle things differently on the sidelines as a head coach. He seems to be doing that now. He was very calm and collected yesterday when Furman used Tech’s offense to jump out to an early lead…..and he worked with the defense to get the players to adjust to what Furman was doing….and they responded….evidence of good coaching.

Zook’s offense in his last year was horrible. Don’t you remember the Miss. State game that year?

But….Zook failed not because he is a bad coach…..but because he is not long-term, head coach material. He was an excellent recruiter. Muschamp is long-term head coach material, and he is an even better recruiter…

It was great to see The Dawgs win the East. They did fair and square.
But the reality is the luck of the schedule that helped put us here and not an overall team improvement.
Certanly the D has begun to come together and play tough, smashmouth ball.

But our O was dismal against a very bad KY team. I saw absolutely no improvement in the O Line or playcalling from the Boise State and SC games to yesterday’s KY game.

Bobo is the worst OC I can think of in the SEC. Richt has kept Bobo on instead of moving him to QB / Recruiting Coach. That is Richt’s fault and it has affected this team.

Will GT come to play ball next week like they did against Clemson? If they do The Dawgs are in for a real tough game. GT loves to play us even when we have much more talent. GT never gives up.

If The Dawgs play GT and (probably LSU) the way they played KY we’ll be right back where we started. No progress.

Tic-tac-toe, three (squared) in a row. Yes, nine consecutive wins is an impressive accomplishment. As ever, the margin of victory in those games is irrelevant. The objective in football is to outscore an opponent, and Georgia has done this nine straight times.

If the Dawgs run the table (Georgia Tech, SEC championship game, bowl game), they will have 12 in a row. Does that sound familiar? It should, because 12 in a row was the undefeated, untied 1980 national championship team’s record.

Incidentally, 12 in a row would put CMR’s head coaching success rate at exactly 75 percent (meaning three times as many W’s as L’s). As of today, it’s 74.47 percent.

Still cant overlook Ga. Tech, still good team at 8-3. Hardly ever a blowout but we should win unless we give up turnovers or crucial penalties. Its true that it isnt Georgia’s fault for having a soft schedule. We should be 10-1 but thats football. The right team is in the championship game folks. Granted S. Carolina lost their great running back and so did we to a point.
It makes us and them one dimensional, just the difference is a better QB and receivers. Were here so what is, is what is. The Defense has improved 60% from the 1st game of the season. Honestly i’d say they were as good or better than LSU’s Defense.
I like Georgia’s chances in the SEC Championship Game whether it be LSU or Arkansas. Yep we’ll be underdogs most assuredly will.
But either way i think Georgia will end up in a Major Bowl win or lose. If our Offense would have improved like our Defense did then i think we could beat anybody right now. How we play coming into the SEC Championship will depend on how we play Ga. Tech.
If Georgia wins then it will be 10 wins in a row which has only happened 1 time. So theres some history to be made there. LSU is not gonna be thinking about the Championship Game as much because theyre more focused on the National Championship.
LSU’s a great team no doubt, they deserve respect but will they think Georgia reached it by a soft schedule? Lost to top 10 teams? Hasnt really played nobody since? I’d say LSU looks at that game as a warm up game.
I remember when Herbstreet lobbied for LSU to jump over Georgia in the polls which is exactly what happened. I remember blowing out LSU at their home. Its not redempton but would set things right because there were 2 times Georgia got left out of the BCS Bowl game.

BCS confusion, not really. LSU and ALabama are still the best two teams in football. I hear a lot of whining about Bama doesn’t deserve another shot at LSU but who is better than Bama in college football. Bama has the best defense in college football. The offense is stacked as well with Trent Richardson who may win the Heisman. There is not another team in the nation who could beat Bama other than LSU and that was one of those could go either way kind of games where the official who called the interception at the 1yard line an interception must have been blind because the receiver had the ball with his back on the ground before the ball was taken away. That was a huge call that made a big difference on the outcome of that game. So who is better than Bama and why? I’m a huge Ga fan and my Dawgs would get killed by Bama. So who else and why?

RMikel58: “Honestly i’d say they were as good or better than LSU’s Defense.”
LOL Again, I know we love the dogs but let’s be realistic and objective. What good offense has UGA shut down? Name them. We played 2 decent offenses all year and in both cases those teams moved the ball up and down the field all game (SC and Boise). Shutting down weak offenses does make us an elite defense, a good defense yes, but nowhere near the level of LSU. Guys, we gave up 28 to Vandy.

Just a side note I am a UGA fan, but of the more realistic cut of the cloth.

I didn’t think Richt had it in him…

He was directly responsible for the downturn this team took starting
in ‘06.

He is also directly responsible for what appears to be a turnaround.

The defensive improvement is the most exciting aspect. This is championship calibur defense. Shore up the o-line and find a consistent running back and this team can compete with anyone.

GO DAWGS! CONGRATS MARK RICHT ON A FANTASTIC JOB!

Dawgster….

After reading your post, maybe I was wrong about you. You seem to still be reading things that are not there and focusing on the negative. Enjoy your visit to the Dome! I hope you have tickets to watch what Bama and Florida got to watch close up…..and Ole Miss last night. If the Dawgs pull off a miracle, then every Dawg fan (negative and postive) has the right to bark at the moon forever. But I simply don’t see that happening…..but I did not see ISU beating OSU, Baylor beating Oklahoma, or USC beating Oregon. You just never know. But no way Baylor, ISU, or USC beats LSU this year.

Is anyone awake in this town, or is everyone in some sort of denial? Go down the list and notice who UGA has beat to take 9 in a row….no one. They have played some of the weakest, if not the weakest teams in D-1 football.

UT, Ole Miss, NMSU, Auburn, Coastal Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky and Florida…oh yeal, and Vandy. These are some of the worst that the SEC and D-1 has to offer, and everyone is Athens is getting excited about playing for the SEC title game.

You might want to save your money on tickets, because LSU is going to totally disassemble the UGA program.

I would feel sorry for the sad wretched friendless Bulldog haters if I didn’t enjoy laughing at them soooo very much. They spend hours every day of their week pecking away in their trash covered hovels praying that the dial up doesn’t drop. The University of Georgia Bulldogs are the SEC East Chanps again and will destroy tech, edge out LSU to win the SEC Championship and throw the BCS into turmoil and then blow out whatever patsy they get in a Bowl game the first week in January.

What has your team done lately?

Yea – UGA has really done something “special” – They only played and beat the worst teams in the SEC – Just look at the combined conference records of the teams UGA beat – and most those teams UGA just barely beat.
Ole Missy 0-7
Missery St 1-7 (only win against 1-7 KY Jellies)
TN 1-7 (only win vs 2-6 Vandi – in OT),
Vandi 2-6 (only wins against 0-7 Ole Missy and 1-7 KY Jellies
KY Jellies 1-7 (only win against 0-7 Ole Missy)
FL Fakers – 3-5 (only wins against 1-7 TN, 1-7 KY Jellies, and 2-6 Vandi)
The COMBINED SEC record of these 6 teams is a PATHETIC 8-39. And then top is off with your toothless non-SEC games against the “mighty (not) Coastal Carolina and NMS.
And you dawg fans are HAPPY and PROUD of yourselves for this???
You guys haven’t played anybody – and you nearly lost to all 6 of the above teams.
I would like to see what happened to your team if you had to play Arkansas (like SC had to) or AL or LSU. But of course you STILL LOST against SC and were embarrassed on national TV against BSU – who even TCU beat.
But the only reason you guys won the SEC East is because the other teams you beat sucked a lot more than you guys – it’s that simple.

and Georgia Southern scored three touchdowns on Alabama, more than any other team. Even LSU didn’t score a single touchdown. Everyone has a close game or two, Alabama’s most recent NC would had it not been for two blocked field goals against a vastly inferior UT team.

But UGA and Alabama have the same task this week. Keep you head out of the “championship clouds” and focus on your in state rival.

Congrats to UGA and Coach Richt. But the fans should not get too cocky- we have beaten a lot of bad football teams, even if they are name programs. Tech most always takes us to the wire, and the triple option has given the defense problems every time we’ve seen it. LSU is another story, exciting to think about, though. We’ll soon know if we’re really back.

GaCock

It is amazing how Georgia can win the SEC East, but winning the side is not based on wins of the side. It is based on wins from the teams Georgia drew from the other side. Maybe they should rename it SEC 1 and SEC 2 or fix a broken system. The SEC would be fixing this problem at break neck speed if Florida would have won all East games but lost their title shot because of their West schedule.

Bobo 17 int is right. We didn’t beat any incredible teams. But you know what there aren’t many special teams in cfb this year. Oregon is mediocre, oh st is terrible, nobody from the ACC is good, ok/ok st are both mediocre, stanford is ok, wis/nebraska are ok, and UGA is ok.

They’ve improved. If you say they haven’t improved than you’re delusional. The old uga would have found a way to lose to kentucky, florida, and auburn. but they didn’t.

So uga is on par with just about every team in the country besides LSU and Bama. So what Bobo? Do any rational uga fans think uga is the best team in the country? NO. But we are improving and will continue to do so.

All you haters..Shut up! We don’t care, The SEC was down last year when SC won. It’s down this year, but botttom line is we are the best of the EAST! 9 in a row is hard. I don’t care, but UGA had a big bull’s eye on there back Saturday and with their backs against the wall, they won! I don’t know who they’ll play in the Dome, I don’t know if they’ll win..but I know they’ll have a chance! If you hate CMR, Bobo or just hate the Dawgs, we don’t care. Buy if you hate the BCS…you’ll now cheer for the DAWGS to beat and I mean BEAT DOWN every team they play the rest of the season..it will cause total confusion in a broken BCS system and bring us one step closer to a play off.
Imagine a LSU team losing to the Dawgs by 35 points..SEC champs..and being left out of the NC game? then
Imagine a Sugar bowl, with UGA beating the other team by 35…it would make the UGA team look like it should have been in a NC game..and thus exposing the broken BCS.in the last 10 years we have seen Auburn get the shaft in 04 and UGA get teh shaft in 07…. GO DAWGS!!!
