Isaiah Crowell: Once again, he’s the ‘missing man’ for UGA

Isaiah Crowell gets a hug after scoring against Tennessee. (AP photo)

Isaiah Crowell is about to be hugged after scoring against Tennessee. (AP photo)

Georgia wanted Isaiah Crowell so much it committed a secondary violation to get him. It had 10 incumbent Bulldogs array themselves, in uniform, in an offensive set, and it had Crowell, who was on a recruiting visit, take his place in the backfield. This, Georgia was saying, is where you can be next season. (It was also a breach of byzantine NCAA rules.)

And, at least for part of the time, that’s where Crowell has been this season — ensconced as Georgia’s No. 1 tailback. He leads the team in rushing and has had three 100-yard games. He has also gone missing during games so often we’ve all taken to wondering what’s really going on. Is he taking himself out of the game because he’s tired? Does he get injured that often? Are the coaches holding him back? If so, why?

After Crowell didn’t play in the first quarter against Vanderbilt, Mark Richt told a halftime interviewer the freshman had been withheld “because we love him.” (”Undisclosed disciplinary reasons” were the real explanation, apparently.) On Tuesday, after Richt’s regular media briefing had concluded, Georgia announced that Crowell was one of three tailbacks — third-stringer Carlton Thomas and Ken Malcome are the other two — who have been suspended for Saturday’s game against New Mexico State. No specific reason was given.

Thus will the Bulldogs be minus four tailbacks Saturday: Richard Samuel was hurt against Florida and has undergone ankle surgery that will sideline him for the rest of the regular season. But the greater issue is Crowell, of whom so much was expected. To be fair, he has come close to justifying the massive hype that preceded him, but the stop-and-start nature of his season — now you see him; now you don’t — has led some to wonder if he’ll be a Bulldog long.

Some cast Isaiah Crowell as the recruit who was going to save Richt’s job, and clearly the freshman has done his part to lift the Bulldogs to 6-2 and second place in the SEC East. But there have been warning signs over those eight games that make us ask: Will the “missing man” turn out to be more trouble than he’s worth?

Chuck & Chernoff were talking about rumors of failed drug tests LAST WEEK. It seems awfully convenient that these guys are serving a “1 game suspension” on the week of the New Mexico State game. Why not Florida? I was starting to believe that Richt was serious about weeding out the “bad apples” and “energy vampires”. Perhaps not…

UGA fanbase typical…no big deal.

Three of your players are suspended for a game for violating rules but it’s against NMSU so it’s no big deal. Sure for a football game it’s no big deal, but for the chemistry of the team and Crowell’s lack of discipline it IS a big deal.

Unfortunately I heard rumors about some attitude problems before he got here, but to be fair every major college football team that thought thy had a sot at him wanted him badly…..I don’t know what’s going to happen with him, but I would think he is making a lot of people nervous…Yes hes is youn but at some point do you realize that its always going to be something. Of course for all the haters, lets keep in mind haow many chances Garcia got from Spurrier and yes as dawg fans we blasted him for that, LSU has had issues and we blasted the way they handled it, os dawg fans expect the critics to come out in force and bash Coach Richt and our program….We may not ever know the true timeline of the events of the drug screening alothough from all I have heard and read, they were suspicions last week but you have to confirm these test before you throw someone under the bus….Hopefully proper procedures were followed and according to our AD, they were, but some will not believe it, so we live with that.
As far as Malcome, I would say he probably sealed his own fate, I hpoe not, but I can see it happening. Maybe we expect too much out of these young men, they come in here usually as the stars of their high schools and then thorow into the limelight…Not excusing it, but maybe we shouldnm’t be surprised. One thing for sure…we need the Rb’s that we are after in this recrruiting class to come on board because there are plenty of opportunities in our backfield….go dawgs

Tests were administered last week, results this week. Don’t assume the worst. Injury and suspensions this year have proved one thing…UGA is pretty deep at most positions. Running back may be the exception but we will see if some red shirts come off this week. Perhaps we are deeper than we think. Hear Richt will sign a 5 year deal after New Mexico game? Anyone else hearing that? Seems that AD is happy with improvement and wants to save recruiting–so a long-term contract is the only answer. Lots of folks on the fence waiting to hear if Richt will return. Even with a lot of Richt haters on the blogs there are a lot of parents who want their sons to play for Richt. So, unless something weird happens, I imagine that a long term contract is around the corner.

Being pretty tough on an 18 year old this year. Even before this news, the whining about his playing time was getting out of control. It doesnt matter when the news came down either. UGA had to win this game and had they lost due to a 1-game suspension of 3 of their RB’s, those 3 are basically out of UGA because noone is going to be on their side for costing the team the UF game, and the Coach is out. Stop pretending that big time college football is not about winning and money. No, the UGA haters here attend no college, no JUCO, no nothing and just waste their time on mom’s dime and plunk away on her PC and bad mouth UGA. I suspect most have never been to sit in a college classroom.

UGA is known by high quality firms and individuals all over the country to be fine university with wonderful faclities and these sad lil morons think it makes UGA fans and grads angry to hear them mad mouth the University. No, we know …………………..you are jealous.

I wonder what sort of comments would have surfaced if we’d had blogs, drug testing, ubiquitous digital cameras and Facebook during Hershel’s time? Or Bo at That Tractor School in Alabama? That kid from Pensacola Escambia who couldn’t see sticking around for Steve Superior? That Pennsylvania HotShot playing for The Bear?

I don’t think any of what led to these suspensions is a new phenomenon; it’s just that kids can’t get away with being a little immature anymore. While I agree that this is particularly bad timing for a team that is trying to scratch and claw its way from major suckdom to borderline respectability, it isn’t fair to be so down on these three. (Unless we should lose this week, in which case they should be jailed for their thuggery.)

Gotta agree with Coach Richt suspending the “three” for the game this Saturday. Thomas and Crowell have already been down this road before. Both should be grateful for the opportunity to return and play. Don’t they realize their future is on the line?? The team does not revolve around them! Sure, the team can use their talent but not at the expense of the baggage they bring! You guys need a “head cleaning”! How about listening to Jarvis Jones, a real player with a positive attitude who is grateful to be at UGA! Remember, Coach Richt was looking for players when he agreed to accept you. Guess what? This post got blocked on Chip Towers’ blog for some reason. So, I’m posting my public service announcement here.

Okay, Thomas Brown opened the box on synthetic mary jane, AKA K2, Spice and other names. The ever-increasing number of various compounds used to create this monster cannot be detected by a common drug test; a secondary screening of the metabolytes is required, which takes time. Just last week, over 40 sailors on one ship were kicked out of the US Navy for use of this very dangerous synthetic stuff. From-the-weed natural mary jane is self limiting. Its derivative, THC concentrates the effect to dangerous levels. The new synthetic compounds are designated as controlled substances as fast as the FDA and DEA can discover them, and use of them is a life-risking enterprise.”

Ive thought and thought and thought about this. If I am Mark Richt, and Im not, what I do regarding what has happened. Do I sacrifice what and who I am and what I stand for, or do I do what every other coach in the SEC or other conference would do. LSU, and Florida from last year, come to mind. Mark is supposed to be cleaning out the garbage right? And he has thrown out, or cast, out the demons from last year right? Right. So what does he do now. They shouldve been suspended for the Florida game if indeed the results were confirmed last week. Here lies my questions. Do you take another chance with Crowell and risk him embarrasing him again. This is his 2nd offense already, that we know of, in 1 year. And they are getting more serious. Ken Malcome quit the team for no playing time, and was allowed to come back, and now this. Wasnt Thomas suspended for the opener?I think we should nip this in the bud, before it really blows up. I would let Crowell go.Improbably gonna take some grenades for that comment, but thats how I feel. If CMR doesnt do something drastic, he will have let himself slip into the abyss that is called selfishness and greed.

It appears the behavior really hasn’t improved at UGA. CMR is just keeping it quite this year, trying to stay under the radar. As someone pointed out, what happened to Houston? Right when I start to think CMR has turned the corner (which would make me very happy) troubling news comes down the pike. News that indicates that CMR CAN’T DISCIPLINE THIS TEAM. Vandy, now this along with several under the radar suspensions. I’m gonna to pull like hell for UGA to go 10-2 and make it to the Dome, but my nightmare is they will go 10-2, CMR will get an extension, and then crash and burn against next years much tougher schedule. After which, UGA will retain him, because the buyout is too large. Its all about the money, after all.

“Georgia wanted Isaiah Crowell so much it committed a secondary violation to get him.”
And then they were surprised that he reciprocated.

Georgia has no shot at winning a national title because they play as a group of individuals: the Team means nothing. Georgia’s Individuals hurt the Team every year. And Richt gives the same old line about “this experience will make these young men better.” Better than whom? Alabama?

Saban and others hold membership on their teams as something exclusive, important, and requiring a commitment not to hurt the Team. Georgia? Not so much.

Heels, you being a Heels fan I would presume, are certainly not talking about doling out proper punishment after supporting the debacle you call a football program. It is UGA policy to suspend for 1 game for such a first offense. And as to all of you conspirators, I own a company and we drug test our potential and current employees. We can at our discretion ask that a “failed” sample be re-tested. We would do this, in the case of say, an employee that normally was exceptional and had passed other tests with no issue. Or say, a group of 3 of them that had tested at the same time and all turned up positive. This could account for the rumors that a test was failed late last week, and a re-test would have not been prepared until yesterday or today. I suspect this may have been the case. In the bigger picture this incident will be long forgotten and resolved with time. IC will either work out or he won’t. Same for the others as well. Missing a game, even against a lesser opponent, is punishment. The suspension of Rambo and Carlton Thomas at the beginning of the year, could have been applied to a game later in the season, but it was done and gotten out of the way.

You’re all a bunch of self righteous idiots. So, the kid smoked a little pot. He’s ‘A KID’. That’s why, not just Richt, but all coaches give these ‘KIDS’ every chance to grow and learn from their mistakes. Some succeed and some don’t. But you have to try. They are getting these boys from all walks of society with a lot of bad habits that were developed at the highschool level. A level most of you support as well.

Back in the ’70’s there was a lot more than pot smokin’ going on. There were full fledged Steroid programs in full swing at virtually every university and most competitive high schools. I know this for a fact. But if a kid they wanted out of the program so much as scratched his nose wrong…it was a ‘TEAM VIOLATION’ worthy of booting him from the program.

JDAWG….is absolutely correct. If a tested involving 3 players showed positive on one test, then the test would be suspect and another would be ordered. In the Military, they would be treated guilty until proven innocent by the second and possibly third test. BUT THEY ARE NOT IN THE MILITARY. OUR NATIONAL SECURITY IS NOT AT RISK. Now to business, Georgia is on the cusp of something Big, and if I’m Mark Richt I recruit the #1 AND #2 TAILBACKS in the Country hard! Crowell needs a quick reality check, and bringing in Marshall out of N.C. would be nice. Also we need to realize that Coach Richt isn’t Dad, as much as he’s looked at in that role, reality is he’s a FOOTBALL COACH, and not there fathers. Blame these little dope smokers on a callus laid back society that requires little discipline and just a “little counseling” to make them better. all we gotta do is beat Auburn, and Kentucky and we are there and Hope that Arkansas don’t play as bad as they did against Vandy, and handle business Saturday against S.C. and we look good for off season recruiting and some of the recruits this year will be ready in the spring to show there stuff. Crowell is a finesse runner with alot of speed and his skill set is best utilized if you can get him in space, he’s definately not a between the tackles runner as he doesn’t have the physical composition to take the weekly abuse of a heavy dose of ground and pound. He obviously is a little light in the tail hence his spending more time on the sideline nursing his superficial skin wounds or bruised ego rather than actually chewing up yardage on the field. That coupled with what seems like a lack of maturity and his future at UGA could be a short stay. That saying… Richard Samuel’s a Damn Good Dawg. This kid has always kept his head down and worked his tail off to help his team no matter what was asked of him. All he has wanted is to help his team any way that he can. I just watched a replay of the game so that I could slow it down a little and Samuel was crucial in moving the chains in the 4th qtr. and it was great watching him lower his head and run up the middle bowling over people and then bouncing up, tossing the ball to the ref and run back to the huddle, he was enjoying the fact that he was finally contributing to his team’s success after all of his sacrifice. It stinks that he got injured on the last play of the game as he rambled down to the 1 yd. line and now his season is gone and he stand on the sidelines and watch his teamates move forward in what can be a remarkable season.
Wishing you a speedy recovery Richard Samual IV ….DGD!

In case you geniouses out there haven’t been paying attention to changes going on at UGA. Let me summarize….
1) THEY HIRED A COACH (GRANTHAM) CUT OUT OF THE SAME CLOTH AS THE GREAT ERK RUSSELL TO LEAD A SUFFOCATING, HARD HITTING, LIGHTS OUT, DEFENSE.
2) THEY ARE CONCENTRATING ON FUNDAMENTAL OFFENSIVE FOOTBALL AND WORKING TO ELIMINATE AS MANY GAME CHANGING MISTAKES AS POSSIBLE, FUMBLES, INTS, PENALTIES. THE FUNCTION OF THE OFFENSE IS TO HOLD ON TO THE BALL AS LONG AS POSSIBLE AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE OTHER TEAM’S MISTAKES.
3)THE NEXT PHASE IN OPERATION BULLDOG IS TO IMPROVE THE SPECIAL TEAMS PLAY WHICH UNTIL RECENTLY (THIS YEAR) HASN’T BEEN THAT BAD. SPECIAL TEAMS IS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE, THEY GOT THE KICKERS AND ATHLETES. THIS WILL GET TURNED AROUND. I THINK THE LAST GAME WAS THE STRAW THAT BROKE THE CAMELS BACK.

By the end of the year, there will be discussion as to who’s defense is better, UGA, BAMA or LSU. BAMA will beat LSU. UGA will beat BAMA in a defensive struggle. Then the bowl debate begins. GEORGIA is winning on defense, not offense. The offense is taking advantage (for the most part) of the field position the defense is handing them. The improvement of the defense has been exponential since the first game of the season. That’s the new Georgia Team. If not for the problems with Blair Walsh and the rest of the Special Teams, they could easily have beaten South Carolina and be in the Top 10. I’ve been tapping into these blogs over the few couple of years and seeing the whining about defense and Fire Coach Martinez and all that good stuff. The FANS were absolutely right in their position on Martinez and I do blame Richt for that failure; however, you got what you want but haven’t stopped bitchin’ long enough to realize it. If Mark Richt goes, all of the progress that has been made over the past two years, goes with him. And it’s loserville for UGA once again. GUARANTEED!!

And what Meyer did or didn’t do…..has nothing to do with what Muschamp is doing……which is what my posts have been saying. P.S…..Meyer suspended the best DE in the country for the SEC championship game by the way….and that probably cost the Gators the win in that game….just for your recall information…..about Meyer. All top tier programs have kids in them (and they are kids) that play on the edge of the rules. Many have gotten preferential treatment since they were in the seventh grade due to their athletic ability. There is no NCAA in high school. Now all of a sudden they are supposed to become model citizens. Add to that media attention to stroke their egos and there you go.

All the college coach can do it hold them accountable for their actions and hope they grow up and not throw away a future in the NFL. But you have to be willing a cut a kid lose if he doesn’t conform to the college game.

@GA TRUTH———-What part of what I said, gave you the impression I didn’t think Special Teams was important? I just happen to believe it is essential if you are going to rely on Great Defense to win ballgames. And that’s what UGA is doing. Two years ago (and before), they were trying outscore opponents on a 100 yard racetrack. That’s the ACC way that Richt brought with him. He has been converted..finally… to the SEC way of playing defense, minimizing mistakes and taking advantage of the other teams mistakes by playing sound, hardnosed offense with the occasional big play thrown in. If you have Special Teams that play the way they did against Carolina and Florida, then it’s counterproductive. But that’s not that hard to fix when you have the quality of athletes that UGA has. Last week’s showing was so glaring, it can’t be ignored or procrastinated any longer. They will have it fixed by the time they play Auburn. Mark my words.

As a die-hard Tech fan (as painful as that can be some years) I don’t generally go on UGA blogs, but this one really caught my attention. Afew things:

First: Congratulations to the Dawgs on their win Saturday. The ignorant can spout off all they want, but that was a lights-out performance by your defense. I am VERY impressed with the job Grantham has done (Not at all impressed with him as a person – he’s a world-class sleazeball, but kudos for his accomplishments with the defense).

Second: Many posters want to play the “IC is only 18, you have to overlook stuff” game. He IS being paid, via a scholarship and percs, better than the majority of working-class people in this state. He isn’t just another student. He has been given the privilage of playing in Div-I at a premier football school. He SHOULD be held to a higher standard than other students (who have to pay their own way most of the time). Failing a drug test is UNACCEPTABLE for ANY scholarship athlete. If I fail a random drug test I will lose my job the very first time. No exceptions. The same should apply here. The 3 RB’s failed drug tests? Then there SHOULD be 3 additional open scholarships for future recruits who can play by the rules.

Lastly, While ALL major schools have their issues, UGA’s football program does seem to have a disproportionate number of “problem children”. It almost seems that CMR views the team as some sort of social program, whereby he can attempt to “rescue” kids who are already going down the wrong path. Not saying that IS the case, but at times it sure does appear that way from the outside. Discipline will always be a problem with ANY group of 17-22 year olds — but you would have NEVER seen this kind of stuff under Dooley, and definitely not under Erk Russell (had ya’ll done the smart thing and made him head coach. But then again, if ya’ll HAD done that CPJ wouldn’t have been able to learn from Erk like he did at GSU, so for us (Tech) it worked out better!)!!!

Anyway, hat’s off to UGA on an excellent win. And best of luck to ya’ll. I’m REALLY hoping that November 26th will bring us a game with the SEC East champions against the ACC Coastal champions. And that is a VERY realistic wish, for once. 9-2 vs 9-2 and BOTH headed to their respective conference championship games and hopefully BOTH headed from there to BCS games. Now THAT would help keep our in-state talent in-state!!!!!!!

See ya’ll on the 26th!! And good luck until then!!

Go pull up that smack I supposedly posted. All summer I posted that Florida’s season depended squarely on the play of one, John Brantley. John Brantley played well in the first 4 games and was playing very well in the Bama game……then he got injured…..and Florida went down with him….just as I posted all summer and during the first 4 games. My prediction this summer for the Gators was 9-3 if Brantley played well all year (with predicted losses to Bama, LSU, and Georgia…and an upset over FSU). I also predicted 7-5 or 6-6 if Brantley did not play well. The second senario seems like the reality….but not because Brantley did not play well….but because he got hurt….and played hurt against Georgia. That is the smack I talked all summer and early in the fall.

Now….the Dawg smack was that you guys were going to beat Boise easily, beat Spurrier and SC, and beat the Gators….winning the East and beating Bama for the SEC title and then win the NC. That was the Dawg smack all summer……well…Boise is the one really good team you guys played this year……..and Bama and LSU would dominae them……and they dominated you. And that is smack.

If they failed the test before the Florida game, they won with ineligible players. I think the outcome will be a forfeit of the Florida win. Of course, you know they knew this before the game, just another example of the classlessness of the UGA program! That record is now 5 and 3!! Hahahahahaha!

Here is some more smack I posted. The week before the Georgia-Florida game….I predicted that Georgia would win by 3 points if Brantley played 100 percent healthy…….and Georgia by 14 if he didn’t play at all. I was wrong….Brantley played about 80 percent healthy (in the first half) and about 50 percent healthy (in the second half)….and Georgia won by a whopping 4 points. Brantley couldn’t even take a snap under center and turn on his ankle to hand off the ball……effectively eliminating about 70 percent of the play calls available to Charlie Weiss….and you guys still only won by 4 points. Well……I think Brissett or Driskell will be game ready next year….and one of them will be able to hand off from under center.

First, all the UGA haters and UGA fans who have never sinned – please continue with your self-righteous condemnation of college football players who make bad choices since you never made one. If you never drank, smoked, or chased women in college then you probably went to Tech and we don’t care what you think anyway. Second, I was in Jacksonville and for the first time in a long time the UGA players ceased with their trash talking and simply played the game and celebrated appropriately – this was a major improvement and I think Coach Richt finally got the players to understand this is the best way to play and represent your school – this was probably a result of the aftermath of the Vandy game. Third, I too think Crowell lacks maturity and he will struggle to stay in school and make it unless he grows up quickly. Fourth, our defense is stout and our offense is getting better and we have a chance to mold into a decent team this year and next year. Lastly, I’m mighty proud to be a Bulldog!

Why would the university do its own testing of samples? Wouldn’t that be somewhat of a conflict of interest? That’s probably why they don’t come back as soon as some of you seems to believe. Being in the military, we get random drug tests on a regular basis and the samples are not tested by the medical facilities located on the base because it stands the chance of someone tampering with samples in order to protect one of their buddies. The samples are sent off to labs with only SSNs so that they have no idea of who they belong to. The chain of custody stands a chance of being compromised if they are done by military personnel aboard the base.

These tests are not back in 24 hours or even 48 hours. Being going through this for the last 27 years and it has been the same since day 1.

I’d dare say this is the last season for Malcome and McClendon. Thomas probably played his last down in the Florida game.
There will be serious discussions about Crowell’ future at UGA now. No doubt a top talent player. Had the opportunity to easily eclipse the statute of Walker, Davis, Edwards, and etc. This kids has serious issues about maturity, decision making, and self-esteem. Only the season ending injury keeps Thomas and Malcome on the team for awhile, otherwise “they’d be gone” [as the White Sox announcer says].
A note from the AD…the football program and CMR’s leadership has come under further review. For damn sure alums and supporters are growing weary of these issues. CMR’s weakness is leadership…none of those kids fear him…may respect him, but do not fear him. He is learning to stop “banking” players and starting to cut them when they start trouble.
A great coach at a great program let his players and his team know where they stood with a sign over the dressing roo…”Be good, or be gone”. Most knew that being good was on and off the field.

Richt signed Crowell’s buddy as a pre condition. Then he held the “missing man” drama that violated NCAA rules and sent the message to every other team member that Crowell was special and would be treated differently. Then Crowell’s crew from Carver burgled the locker room. Crowell has some talent, but he refuses to block, injures easily, and takes himself out of games at will. If he doesn’t flunk out of school, he will get busted for some drug or alcohol charge. He is a distraction that neither the football team nor the Unversity of Georgia needs.

Who knows exactly when Richt was made aware of the results of the drug tests but with the tests allegedly administered on Thursday I don’t see a problem with the players not being suspended until after the UF-UGA game. If I am Richt and I am aware of the results of the tests before one of the biggest games of my career, I want it to be confirmed before enacting suspensions.
Having said that, WHY were all 3 RBs tested for drugs last week? Does UGA test all scholarship football players in the middle of the season (something I view as unlikely on a cost basis)? Did a random drug test just happen to find 3 RBs (2 FRs and a JR) who are drug users? Or, was there reasonable suspension to test all 3 RBs for drugs?

I wouldn’t be coming on here (or any other blog) attacking the integrity of another school’s athletic programs. GT’s football AND basketball programs are on probation, both are an embarrassment to the school with their ACC-low graduation rates, and your only conference football title in a long time got stripped because you played ineligible players and tried to stonewall the NCAA.

As for Richt and UGA supposedly not upholding standards, why does your athletic director still have his job after the debacle of his handling of the NCAA investigation? I don’t think Richt’s handling of behavior problems of his college kid players compares to letting your athletics administration stay in place after that level of scandal.

I have to say it sure looks like they played players, according to ESPN all having failed a drug test on Thursday, that shouldn’t have played so that they could beat a very bad UF team and save CMR.

Had we lost to UF, and we came real close to doing that, he’d been fired. This was self preservation and it’s very obvious and UGA looks awful right now for not only having 3 players involved in this but more importantly for how this was handled and how we played players for a big game and sit them for a bad game.

And what if we lose this weekend at our own home coming, should CMR then be fired? All these people opining that we will win the SECG and upset LSU or Bama are, well, smoking something with our running backs. This weekend may be very ugly, Murray is not good. Auburn is coming off a bye week and I think this is the first time in a while they put one in before our game. They’ve finally found their QB. And GT destroyed a very very good Clemson team. Destroyed them.

We don’t have the coaching to win out. We don’t have the players. We don’t have anything and yet we still might win the East and lose 3 of the 4 next games. That’s how bad the east is. If Auburn put up 50 or 60 of whatever on South Carolina last year I can only imagine what LSU will do to us.

I don’t think Georgia will be getting any more elite running backs any time soon. Everyone including the announcers knew Georgia should have been running the ball against Florida. But, for some reason, just like in the past years with Ealey their offensive was based on pass plays rather than running plays.

I was so glad that someone final got the message near the end of the game and called a few plays for Samuel from Georgia’s old playbook. I also seemed that Georgia’s offensive line blocked better on running plays than on passing plays. I think that Florida quarterback got sometype special deal to come to Georgia.

Disappointed in the conduct of the U of Ga football players. A winning team is not worth it. I say boot them off the team. This is a reflection on the team and the coaches for tolerating this. This would not have been allowed by the coaches when I was at Georgia!

If CMR delayed suspension for violations he knew about well before the Florida game, especially if they involved drugs, Crowell now OWNS his ass, and he will own CMR’s ass until something happens that forces CMR to throw him off the team . . . and this, of course, will be at the worst possible moment. Not only can players sometimes learn hard lessons, but also their coaches.

MR had to put samuels in for the fourth quarter and feed him the rock to lessen the importance of IC’s playing vs. UF. If IC had continued and picked up 100+ yds, this would look much worse. Samuels was running like a man possessed as he knew he was the new #1 RB.

Reason to missing? Maybe because the GA fans and Atlanta and other media probably think he is the 2nd coming of Hershel. I mean look at these backs, Worley, King and now Crowell, just to name three. I mean they are excellent in high school but didn’t have the pressure they had in college. They have to read and hear about how good or bad they are in college, along with competing with all they other good backs on scholarships. Especially when they do something they shouldn’t … party, fumble, etc. But the biggest thing, I think, is the media and fans. When everyone realizes there will be no other “Hershel” coming to UGA. If he comes and is better, there will be no more mentioning of Hershel … if worst, the next Hershel is still there to dream about. When the UGA fans realize that there will NEVER be another Hershel Walker, I think this probably will go away.

I’m hearing Crowell smoked weed in high school. If this is true then I say UGA should cut their losses if this kid gets in trouble one more time. He had to miss part of the Vandy game due to disciplinary problems. I ay the very next incident drops him from the team. Crowell has entered a NO TOLERANCE ZONE. The other players involved get the same total number of chances Crowell has been getting. After that, cut bait with them as well.

To look at it another way; CMR and the AD believe that marijuana does not have any effect on an athlete’s on-field performance . I mean, they did let them play? Correct? Even if they were waiting for the results of the back up test, they let them play. What a glaring admission.

I for one, remember the recruitment of the above mentioned player. Some posters came on here and said that this individual would never step on the field at Georgia. They listed his problems and character being the main reason , for their belief in their statements. But the unforeseen perfect storm came along and made it happen anyway. Now their belief is bearing fruit before our eyes. This was not hidden knowledge. How do our coach’s miss
and/or dismiss this kind information? If this individual had been redshirted then the naysayer’s would of been right IMHO.

And 18-22 year olds are not kids. They are men.

Ok, so the results of the guys actions stinks for UGA. Having said that, everyone (Dawgs and haters alike) is crazy to think UGA is a classless program. Maybe Richt gives a few too many chances to the players, but it appears he is one of the few that actually suspend players for what he considers wrongdoing. NOBODY KNOWS FOR SURE what these guys did, but it’s very likely the rumors are correct. What WE DO KNOW is that THEY WEREN’T NCAA VIOLATIONS, so Richt is free to discipline how he sees fit.

“more trouble than he is worth” indicates that we would have less trouble, or better off, if we didn’t have, Is that true? No. So far his issues have hurt only himself. If he had signed with Bama, (or any of the other dozen schools that tried and would still sign him TODAY if they could), he wouldnt have been playing Saturday either. It’s not like he has been getting in the way of others who might have played more. Now if this continues, then it becomes a distraction, and assuming there are other option, then you can say more trouble than he is worth.

Spurrier comes up in his handling of Garcia. In the middle of the season with a divisional race on the line he tosses Garcia off the team. We heard more in this paper about the treatment of a newspaper reporter in Columbia than the move with Garcia. The spin was Spurrier was unpredictable and paranoid, but a lot of fun to watch. Kick them off the team, and the NCAA should have a standing rule they cant play football at any NCAA school! Its just that easy. Then give their scholarship to some well deserving you man or woman who would use the money to get a real degree and do good for society.

These three may or may not have failed drug tests. I don’t know or care. If this were still a free country, then we wouldn’t allow our citizens to be forced to submit to urinalysis on demand – but that’s another issue altogether. Coaches and employers understood when a player or employee had substance abuse problems before these tests were even invented. Behavior should trigger disciplinary action – not drug test results.

What is relevant in this situation is that these three didn’t likely fall prey to random tests last Thursday. Something happened to trigger this action. While a positive drug test result may provide the University with cover for suspending the players, the behavior that triggered the tests is the actual reason for the suspensions – and the coaching staff didn’t need to wait for a chemical analysis to know that. True or not, it now appears that the coaching staff took advantage of the delay in receiving the test results to allow these players to compete in the Florida game.

One bit of “good” news: Georgia is not the only SEC football program that recruits athletes of poor character. Arkansas wide receiver Marquel Wade (a recruit from Florida) has been suspended one game by the Southeastern Conference for an illegal hit during Saturday’s game against Vanderbilt. Wade was suspended for violating NCAA rules governing hitting an opponent trying to field a kick and targeting a player with the crown of his helmet. The freshman was thrown out of the game, a 31-28 Arkansas win, after drilling Vanderbilt punt returner Jonathan Krause, who had called for a fair catch.

Kudos to the SEC administration and the officiating crew. They had the right reaction this time. The offending player was ejected immediately, and the administration didn’t feel the need to appear politically correct by also suspending the victim, as they did in the Geathers incident that occurred in the Vandy vs. Georgia game.

I can remember talking to a player from Princeton about playing UNLV in the NCAA March Madness. They should make a movie of that team and that game. The cultures were so diverse and the thugs were trying to intimidate the Princeton team that was concentrating so hard to their coaches that at one point the Princeton guard tells the ranting UNLV playing shut the f.. up I can’t hear my coach and the UNLV guy actually said excuse me, I am sorry.

TampaGator…its clear to me that you know little, if anything, about Christianity. Jesus is forgiveness but expects the sinner to repent. He told Peter to forgive someone 70×7 when Peter (the apostle) asked how many times he should forgive.

Coach Richt combines coaching with compassion. He does it in his personal life as well as his coaching. He dedicates time and money for others less fortunate because of his Chrisitan faith as does Tebow.

My suggestion to you is that you stick with something that you actually know about.

I’m afraid that is about as good as it gets nowadays. Georgia fans, under the Mark Richt regime, has been relegated to hoping that idiots on other football teams will get into even worse trouble than their own “problem children” in order to deflect attention away from Athens and that other teams will lose games so that they can back into a hollow SEC East Division Championship in spite of having beaten nobody with a winning record.

Thank Goodness Alabama injured Florida’s quarterback and drug test results were delayed so that the Dawgs didn’t have to suffer through yet another embarrassing loss in Jax this year. Too bad that meaningless victory only guarantees the continuation of the CMR regime at UGA.

Eighteen-year-old, celebrated football recruits not only think – they expect – to be above the law and Crowell seems to be no different. Personally, I like Mark Richt, but as long as college coaches have to stretch or break the rules to sign players like Crowell, or have to find innovative ways to set themselves apart and impress teenagers, like singing “Happy Birthday” to recruits or, like other coaches, flying onto high school practice fields in helicopters, things will never change. It is the sad reality of big-time college football that some coaches and programs will lower themselves and compromise their own integrity to sign spoiled and undisciplined, but super-talented, 10-star kids with the hope that they will provide enough of an edge on the gridiron to outweigh the damage they may do to the college and their teammates. How refreshing it is to see the occasional coach who has “had it” and cuts a troublemaker loose…

For heavens sake! Get a grip people! It’s not an NCAA violation when the crap isn’t illegal! (you can buy this crap at gas stations!) It is a UGA policy! Georgia and Kentucky are the only teams in the SEC who suspend players for their first failed test! It was stupid and they are paying the price. If the test was administered on Thursday, why would you suspend them for a game on Saturday? Please use logic folks!

The only reason Richt suspended for the NM State game is because they’ve already played Coastal Carolina.

The real question is not what these players did, it is when did they do it and when did the coaches / administration know about it? Could it have been known before the UF game?
The is where the sleeze factor comes into play!

And for Tech probation. It is like a consummated marriage that was annulled. Nine month later something happens that proves reality while the records show it could have never happened. Who are we fooling. CPJ put a team on the field that was the best team in 2009 in the ACC. He is doing it again this year under probation. The man’s about winning. I have no idea if Johnson is Jewish or Christian or what, all I know is if Georgia had a coach like him they would have won a lot more than the ACC and if 300 dollars separated them from their claim on a national championship in the minds of some so be it because it happened whether you want to admit it or not. You can have your records give me moments like last Saturday night in Grant Field or in Jacksonville with Vince Dooley.

Let me get this straight. The question is whether to take Crowell or not. And how much do you get paid to ask these questions? Let’s go back to when the decision was made. Take Crowell who will probably be (and is) a real good running back on the field but is a typical teenager who might have some discipline problems, or the other guy who frankly may sit on the bench for four years but will be nominated for sainthood. Oh wait, there are no “other guys” being nominated for sainthood. We will just have to pick between two typical teenagers who do typical teenage things and do our best to keep him straight. Either way, we will just have to try our best to keep them straight.
Now I will say I like the Alabama running back model. It is more of a blue collar approach and one senses Saben has less forgiveness built into the system. He also has two starters most of the time. And in fairness to Richt, he thought he had two starters at the start of the season but life is full of surprises. So instead of jousting at windmills (ie should Crowell have been offered a scholarship-only you believe a NCAA coach would consider not offering a scholarship), why don’t you do the more intellectually honest (and far more difficult) job of telling us precisely what Richt could have done (or even better- should do) to correct Crowell’s behavior for the good of Mr. Crowell and UGA fans alike.

Unethical!?

November 2nd, 2011
9:50 am

To the imbecile on Page 1 who suggests that Richt is unethical, please please go back to the Tech blog.

If the coaches are required to drug test the players twice a season, why wouldn’t you time the tests 10 days before your 2 easiest games!? You can’t trust the players to do the right thing but you can decide when you find out that they aren’t.

You get the results back in a week and the idiots that don’t pass only miss the patsies on the schedule. Every coach does this–I mean, did any of the LSU kids miss the big game this weekend?

Unethical? That is ridiculous.

we don’t roll like that, and he’ll be a better man for it later, in a career

that’s why, to this day, I cull the Auburn resumes first.

I have been a Tech fan all of my life and I disdain the Georgia Bulldogs. But with that said I have to admit that I have always liked Mark Richt the man. I have always thought that he brought some class to the program and sincerely wanted to do what’s right.

That is, until lately. I could care less about the suspensions -it’s only for one cupcake game – but I am really disappointed in Richt. With the pressure to compete in the SEC and keep his job he signed guys whom he knew at the outset would be discipline problems. Everyone knew Crowell would be trouble. He was even taking himself out of games in high school when things didn’t go exactly his way. But you sign him anyway. Why? Because if you don’t Alabama or LSU (or some other major college) will. That’s what Christian’s call “compromise” and in the end it typically gets you into trouble.

Say what you want but Mark Richt is a great coach. His record proves it. I just believe that he could win with 3 and 4 star players who had great character, could succeed in the classroom and not be a discipline problem. It may be too late. He may have already lost the respect of his players and control of the program.

Just my thoughts.

I don’t care how good any player is…..he either follows the rules or we send him packing! How stupid does someone have to be to throw away such opportunities? But then, I guess they’re not at UGA for an education anyhow. If they can’t wear the red and black and be proud, I don’t want them!

What tickles me about the NCAA probation is Tech was a loser last year. You can’t punish losers they don’t get it. The only time punishment works is when you have a winner, losers don’t care. I think the probation motivated Tech, I bet you it will not motivate Crowell. It would Murray are 3 fourth of the Georgia team. I bet ya Georgia plays the best games as far as not having penalties and mental errors Saturday. You took your other back not Crowell and you crammed the ball down Florida’s throat last Saturday. You could do that about any Saturday you wanted to with any back on your roster. Trust yourselves.

I’m sick of the nonsense.

But what’s funny is how much the losers on this board want Georgia to fail sooooo miserably – how much hate and contempt they have for UGA and Mark Richt. It is so hilarious to watch them contradict even their own vitriol as they attempt to take shot after shot at belittling the program.

Wow.

I don’t see how they have the time – I spend my time focusing on my team, not others. Well, I guess I CAN see now. Their programs must just horribly suck soooooo bad……

I’m done with the tomfoolery

If Richt would just step up and kick Crowell’s A$$ to the curb if he screws up again, hopefully that would send a big enough message.

Richt has done a good job of being tougher with wayward players, but kick a top recruit off and send a message to everybody in the program and all future recruits – screw-ups will not be tolerated….

All of us want a clean program – this hurts our team entirely too much…

again, so sad you don’t have a better program to root for yourself… If your program is so much better, then it’s probably because your program sucks. If you have nothing better to do then to try and belittle another program, again it’s most likely that your program sucks…and the fact you still live in your mom’s basement and have nothing better to do …..

GT Fans -

You’re like hypocritical liberals who act sanctimonious, but in fact have more skeletons in the closet than a cemetery.

Crowell is a typical freshman that came to college with tons of hype. It’s WAY TOO early to tell whether Crowell will be another Jasper Sanks. I think Richt is staying on top of the situation and doing what he needs to discipline Crowell and impress upon the consequences of violating rules. My hopes is that Crowell grows up fast and doesn’t blow his God given talents. This kid has an opportunity to play in the NFL if he can keep his head on top of his shoulders.

If I was Richt I’d tell Crowell to shave his dreads!

I remember when almosts all, if not all, of Georgia’s football players would’ve been welcomed into my living room and dining room; in fact they would’ve been invited and as Bulldogs, they would’ve been had a lifetime invitaiton. I even have a huge print of Herschel in my great room, and was hoping Crowell would follow in his footsteps, in more ways than one. Looks like none of this is going to happen with this young men, and many of these young men. Many would not be welcome in my living room today.

Mark,

You were WAY TOO KIND to Crowell in this puff piece.

Crowell has scored 4 rush td’s.

Ealey had 11.

Crowell is under 5 ypc.

Ealey was over.

Crowell is @3 ypc in the 4th quarter/crunch time.

Ealey was over 6 ypc there.

Yes, Crowell has been the missing man, got into worse trouble than Ealey did.

You were close, but WAY TOO SOFT.
