Heat Check: Everybody – Tech, UGA, the Falcons – is smokin’

The men of Groh are growing on me, I must confess. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)

Georgia Tech wins a big game and is back in the Top 25. Georgia beats Florida and has climbed to No. 18. The Falcons don’t even play but gain on New Orleans in the NFC South. Our weekly Heat Check begins with the question: Are we Winnersville or what?

Georgia Tech: A big-time performance was needed, and that’s what the Jackets provided. Coming as it did after two small-time losses, Tech now gives the impression of having turned a corner. (Then again, it’s always nice to happen on a corner and find Dabo Swinney standing there.)

There was a neat little hidden stat coming into the Clemson game, so neat and so hidden I’d have missed it if a faithful Twitter follower hadn’t called it to my attention: In ACC games, Tech was 11th in the conference in total offense but first in the league in total defense. Which tells us that, for all the hand-wringing over Al Groh’s D, he has fashioned a unit that will give the famous offense a chance in every game, provided the offense doesn’t turn the ball over and the special teams don’t collapse completely. Heat Index: Beat the nation’s No. 5 team, even if it is Dabo-coached, and you’re certifiably smokin’ again.

Georgia: I have to say I’m a bit confused. Georgia beat Florida for the fourth time since 1989 after trailing by two touchdowns, and the reaction on this site wasn’t so much exultation but complaint. I’m willing to concede that reader comments aren’t necessarily an accurate gauge of anything and that some folks who present themselves as Georgia fans might not be. That said …

Are you serious? When you’ve lost as many games to Florida as Georgia has, you should take a one-point victory on a safety induced by a punt that bounces off a seagull and be happy with it. I know special teams were terrible. I know this isn’t much of a Florida team. Doesn’t matter. It was still Florida in Jacksonville, and Georgia won. Heat Index: Six in a row after 0-2 — me, I’d call that warmth.

The Falcons: Had a bye. Will have another Sunday. (Technically, they meet Indianapolis. Same difference.) Then again, the Saints thought they’d have a bye in St. Louis, and they lost to an 0-6 opponent. Which means the Falcons are tied with New Orleans in the loss column, which is a pretty good place to be after starting 2-3.

Do I think the Falcons have played to their capacity? No, I don’t. Do I think they can win the Super Bowl playing as they have? No again. But do I think they have room to grow into a Super Bowl-type team? Yes, I still do. Heat Index: After the trip to Indy, the Falcons’ next three are at home, including a Nov. 13 date against New Orleans. Time to get hot, I’d say.

Will Muschamp: The former Bulldog officially became the first Florida coach ever to have a losing record against Mark Richt, and Gator fans don’t know what to do. Should they write off Muschamp as the next Ron Zook, or should they blame Urban Meyer for leaving so little talent behind? Heat Index: Florida was winless in October for the first time since it went 0-10-1 under Charley Pell in 1979. That’s cold.

Dabo Swinney: He replaced Tommy Bowden, who would raise hopes only to dash them, and after two years on the job it’s unclear whether Dabo isn’t really Tommy B. in disguise. Because nothing at Clemson has changed. This is still the team you can’t believe in. Heat Index: When you come into a game thinking about a national championship and trail by three touchdowns at the half, you’ve undergone a cold snap.

The Braves: They finished one game behind the eventual World Series champs. Which sounds nicer than saying, “The Cardinals wouldn’t be champs if the Braves hadn’t squandered an 8 1/2-game lead in September.” Heat Index: A chilly winter awaits.

The Hawks: They’re locked out. Their new owner might not be their new owner after all. Other than that, everything’s hunky-dory. Heat Index: Let’s see, when were the Hawks ever a hot item? In 1988, maybe?

I’ll take the one point win over ANYBODY. The way our defense dominated two very good backs in Rainey and Demps I am looking forward to the rest of the season.

Congrats on a well played game Dawgs. Samuels thanks for running the way you should. Conley for stepping up for Mitchell. Jones for dancing with Brantley all day. Keep it going get healthy and beat Auburn

(Let’s give credit where credit is due. The Braves didn’t blow an 8.5 game lead, they blew a 10.5 game lead.)

Georgia’s win over UF was nice, but not something any UGA fan should get excited about. They barely beat a team that’s now lost 4 straight and who has a doofus coach.

We’re angry because we know that garbage performance in Jacksonville (offense and special teams were garbage, defense was great) just bought us another year of the Richt stink bomb. The special teams and offense disasters had Richt’s fingerprints all over them. When we have a tough schedule next year, we are doomed.

MARK, Some of the Young-uns on the blogs want ’style” points when we play and this team isn’t that. It just plays hard and gritty… I’m perplexed about you saying UF has so little talent… I read Mike Bianchi’s column in the Orlando Sentinel and he said the same thing…. Didn’t the Gators have the #1 CLASS RECRUITING just a year or 2 ago…. Hmm. What happens when those recruits get to UF???? If fact, they finished in the top 5 the last 5-10 years. UF never has talent problems… Stop buying into that. I mean Omar Hunter is down there, Jeff Demps, Chris Rainey, Jeff Brantley, #2 & #3 qB’s were all highly rated,,, What is going on down there????

Florida Recruiting Rankings

2011- #12
2010- #2
2009- #11
2008- #3

So the talent is present in Florida. I know they have had some attrition and a coaching change, but its still Florida. Florida fans lose the benefit of the doubt when they taunt rival fanbases. Time to pay up…

Great weekend for both state schools!

Tech actually had a homefield advantage for once!

It made a HUGE difference, as did the excellent play of the defense. That was one of the best offenses in college football, and Groh and company shut it down when it mattered.

The offense also looked much better as Tevin grew more confident. Those late pitches are scary, indeed; but they are vital in making this offense run.

Next up the Hokies…let’s make them wish they would have stayed home.

GO JACKETS!

Last four years Florida has ranked, 11,8,3,12 in recruiting. Talent is not the issue. Meyer quit coaching once he lost his bromance with St. Tebow and then they hired the fraud Muschamp. Florida had there run in the SEC now it is time to pay up.

No doubt that defense was lights out. The special teams and offense kept trying to give the game away. That INT down near the 10 yard line by Murray could have been the nail in the coffin. The D manned up and back the Gators so far up that they missed the FG. Great job of coaching by Grantham. Great job by the kids on the defense by responding.

Put somebody on special teams that will make a tackle, stop flinging your arms out there. Get into position and wrap ‘em up.

UF’s offense is atrocious. So to pound your chest for holding them makes me laugh. Duke coulda stopped them. Sc will too. You haven’t faced a good offense all season aside from boise. And you won’t until possibly gt at the end. So you start and end the season with the two best offenses.

@Coach, you ought to hear Brando on Paul Finebaums show each week if you think that was bad… He is quite a character… I thought it was appropriate…. Franklin is getting Vandy noticed up there though…@HT… didn’t mean to equate you to OA…. BUT, we don’t need to start over with another staff. We can fix everything that is going wrong (hire Fabris back to fix Special Teams, etc) and if we peak at the right time, this could be a fun end of the year… We just now had our entire D back for the 2nd half of the UF game and look what happened.. Jones, Tree , Washington, S. Williams and our nose tackles are studs….

Grantham has the D playing well, but Murray throws as many bad passes as good ones and special teams are scary, Richt’s words not mine. Bring him back if you wish, but leave us an out if this type of play continues. Reality, the wins have come against teams that are like 2-24. We’ve proved nothing yet. Good win, yes. Heck, I called it on a blog last Sunday after tech lost to Miami that they would beat Clemson by 17. OK, I was wrong, it was only 14. Clemson can NEVER stop a good running team. Congrats tech! VT will be more of a challenge. They have a much better defense. I hope that tech & UGA can win the rest of their games leading up to the 26th. I will make a great national televised game and hopefully start putting this rivalry back in the spotlight.

I’m concerned about my Dawgs on offense. Question: Did Samuel break his foot? I hope not, he ran the ball very well Saturday. If I were CMR, I would start Mason on Saturday and try not to play as many starters as possible. Of course I’m not a head coach it’s just an opinion.

Herschel talker,

Please tell me you are not married or even worse, aren’t married and have kids or will have kids. It would be ashamed to bring children into the world when their daddy is so negative and can’t wait to write negative things about UGA and I suspect most anything you encounter on a daily basis. I would bet your whole day depends on your ability to write something negative, at some venue or another.
When UGA beats Florida , be it tiddly Winks, football or any contest, it is a good time for UGA. That is out number one rivalry,,, not Tech.
You can complain all you want about CMR, but UGA is 6-2, no matter the supposedly low level of competition, and considering the injuries, defections, academic misfits dismissed and low level of experience, due to a lot of youngsters, he has done a credible job getting this team where it presently is. This team, like any young team, could have easily laid down after the two loses to open the season, but instead, they have continued to improve and learn each week. You claim to be such a fan, that you think the future is doomed because of CMR. You sir are dead wrong, as usual.
UGA will get a respectful bowl game this year, and deservedly so. UGA has a bunch of youngsters that continue to show that they want to win. News to you also. I don’t think the players or coaches read these blogs but if they did, they would just credit you for what you are. A sorry person who lives to try and cut them down, and I would bet most likely, you have never been in a team position in your life, be it in the military or athletics. You don’t understand the concept of team work, or if you were a true fan, what it means to stick by your team, through rich and poor times both. You are so obsessed with being negative, you don’t know what it is like to be positive anymore. You must be a true delight for your family, since your type of attitude usually is your predominant character trait, and dominates your outlook on life. This is football, not a game of life. Your sour disposition on life, has spilled over into how you converse in life, in general, and reflects poorly on you, not on a football team or others. Try being constructive sometimes. It will probably scare even you, but give it a try. It appears to me that you write your garbage, just to get a response from people like me, and at that you have succeeded. Read my response above and if this is the kind of reaction you wish to receive each time you blog negatively, then I would suggest that you have serious self esteem issues and could benefit from counseling.

Does this hypothetical rant sound familiar?

The program is out of control. Absolutely no leadership from the head coach. He doesn’t have a clue and the team reflects his incompetence. 14 penalties for a total of 106 yards. Just no discipline from the top down thus the players act like T H U G S. The offensive coordinator is a dud. This bozo needs to be fired. He’s overpaid and over his head. Only 1 first down in the second half. Negative yards net rushing. QB only completes 35% of his passes. The defensive coordinator hasn’t a clue. Wasted a 17-3 first quarter lead. The guy needs to be fired. 4 losses in a row. Haven’t won a game since September. We get all these top recruiting classes and the coaches do nothing with the talent. Our head coach should be on the hot seat. I hope the AD cleans house after this season.

What impressed me the most about the win Saturday was the defense in the second half. Evidently one side of the ball can go into halftime make adjustments that work. My worry was that Demps and Rainey would be running wild. Dyer and McCaleb from Auburn were a big concern IMO but the way the defense handled the Florida speedsters I feel a lot better going into that game.

When Georgia got back their starting defense at the half down by 7 I felt pretty good. The defense dominated the Florida o-line. Xavier Nixon, a Georgia native on the Florida o-line was schooled by Jarvis Jones and big Bean took care of Omar Hunter, the Georgia native at d-tackle for Florida. Maybe these guys should have gone to Georgia? Samuel is stating to come around at running back and I think we will have a good ONE – TWO punch at RB for the next two years. Dallas Lee, starting LG, was injured in the 4th quarter – broken leg and I wish him a complete and fast recovery. This leaves Georgia really thin on the OL.. There are no replacements unless the redshirt is taken off of a freshman at this late date. The special teams are a major liability and cost Georgia the game against South Carolina. Fortunately, Georgia has a breather next week with New Mexico State. Don’t expect Crowell or Mitchell to play – injuries. When was the last time Georgia came back from being down 14 points to win against Florida? The defense won the game. The offense played it’s usual game – moved the ball but trouble in the red zone. The special teams got an “F” for keeping Florida in the game to the end. Erk is smiling. NOw we need to get a special teams coach for next year.

Can’t blame Muschamp totally. Oscar Meyer left that program in shambles. New coaches and new schemes, it was expected for the gators to struggle this year. They have a ton of talent on that team. Very young.
However, our offense has no excuses for looking so bulimic. Thank the Lord for our defense! I use to be high on Murray, but as each game passes I’m starting to have that much less confidence in him. I would like to see Mason start and see what he can do. Even though it’s against New Mexico, the playing time will do him good. Anyone else feel the same way?

One more theme from the Florida boards. The result of the game was not a result of Dawgs being better, but them being short handed and just not very good this year. LMAO. you can’t make this stuff up.I’d like to tell them they were healthy on defense and Brantley doesn’t play defense, so why didn’t they just stop us from scoring and take the lack of offense on their part away.

For recruiting purposes you have to extend Richt’s contract at least 2 years. No need to raise his salary or give too many years, but recruits need to know he will be here. What is all of this talk about how bad Florida is. They lost to Alabama and LSU without their starting QB (what other team in the country would not have?); Auburn, while again having to use a true freshman QB and now UGA who won a close game, though special teams play made it closer than it should have been. (Punter Butler is hiding behind the Walsh problem, but he hasn’t been any better this year). Florida has a pretty good defense and their offense will be much better when Brantley is healthy. Granted they are not the Florida of 3 or 4 years ago, but for people to say Florida is terrible is just stupid.

A lot of the criticism of our coaches and other teams coaches are not justified. The fans are upset that their teams are not doing better with so many 4 and 5 star recruit’s on the team.
Let’s take Georgia for example : Grantham was hired January 2010 and was not involved in the 2010 recruit’s that signed February 2010. All of the recruit’s up until then were recruited based on them excelling in a 4-3 defense. Then Georgia brings in a 3-4 specialist coach in Grantham. 4 and 5 star recruit’s that knew the 4-3 were lost. Now that Grantham has one recruiting year behind him based on the 3-4 needs and the other recruit’s having time to change everything they had learned and relearn the new 3-4 defense they are now doing great.
Just saying that sometimes it not the recruit’s under performing but new coaches are a huge disruption. Florida and Tennessee are finding out that now as well are a lot of teams. It take years to bring news coaches with different philosophies in , teach it to the players already there and then recruit the kind of players needed.

I usually don’t blog about GA on the blog, but if you want my opinion Mark Richts biggest issues are

1) He stuck with Willie Martinez way too long (poor judgement on coaching and too loyal to a friend)
2) He needs to just suck it up and hire a true special teams coach….Its rediculous how bad the GA special teams are….on both sides
3) He spend more time with Bobo on game planning (Allthough Bobo has done a better job this year…He seems to be learning)

Does Mark Rich do the other things that the Head coach is responsible for…well lets see.
1) Evaluate his talent and use it well…this year yes….but not every year
2) Manage the game well (timeouts, etc)…..He didn’t early in his career but seems like now he has it mastered
3) Recruit….Well hes lost some recruiting battles lately but I think that can be tied back to his lack of recent success.

Personally I think the program is back on track and it would be foolish to make any changes now (except hire a special teams coach)

Ace

Mark,

I had a mixed reaction to the Florida win. Why? First, Florida isn’t good this year, so a win against a team with a 4-4 record now, 2-4 in the conference, although better than a loss, doesn’t feel great, Second, Auburn held Florida to 6 points, and Florida somehow put up 20 on us. Demps, Raimey’s “speed” or “Florida’s talent” didn’t effect Auburn, why did it cause us so many issues? Third, we squeeked by with a 4 point win. It wasn’t a dominating performance you’d expect over a 4-4 team. After barely escaping 4-4 Vanderbilt the game before, the act of barely winning against 4-4 teams is tiring. Fourth, there are some real issues that continue to haunt us like special teams kick offs to their best returner, special team missed short field goals, punting game issues, Aaron Murray’s habit of playing poorly in big games, Crowell’s habit of getting an injury each game, and so on. Fifth, the 6 game winning streak is nice, but when you look at the win/loss records of the teams we have won against, it loses luster. 100% of the wins were against teams with at least 4 losses, some had 5 losses, some had 6 losses. A 2-0 winning streak the first 2 weeks would have put us in the top 5. But we couldn’t find a way to win either game. South Carolina was particularly dissapointing because of the way we lost due to all those self inflicted turnovers & mistakes. Deep down I think we’ve all come to realize after watchign Coach Mark Richt the last 2 seasons, that we can win against teams with bad records, but we can’t win against a great team.

BobDawg

I have been calling for another offensive coordinator for years even though would like to keep Bobo as QB coach and he is a very good recruiter for south Georgia. I think it would have caused too much disruption for Georgia to change out both coordinator at the same time. At least I hope that was the reason and had nothing to do with Bobo being married to Barbara Dooley’s sister’s daughter.
As for the special teams looking so bad , the reason for that was Berlin leaving for the NFL. He was a great special teams and linebacker coach and was hired at Georgia for that reason. Richt just made a huge mistake in not realizing how important special teams can be and thought by dividing the different aspects of special teams among his coaches that would be okay. WELL HE WAS WRONG. I guarantee it is one of the biggest topic with CMR right now.

Defense, after the first 2 games, has really improved. Jarvis Jones had a David Pollack like performance. NT’s are run stoppers. shut down corners. safety has 5 picks. great on 3rd down. Todd Grantham, Lakotas, Garner, and Olividatti are earning their paychecks. I hope we can finally beat a ranked team like Auburn, it’s been years now since we’ve done that. The Auburn game is a ‘must win’ game, as it will very likely determine Coach Mark Richt’s future. Tired of being ranked #2 in recruiting for the decade, and losing to teams like South Carolina and Auburn. That has to stop or it’s time for some new blood.

I would like to see Todd Grantham as Head Coach if Richt falters down the stretch here, paired with a great offensive coordinator, and a special teams coach. Special Teams Coach should be the 3rd most important assistant coach on the team, behind OC/DC. Do we really need a full time TE coach as little as we use TE’s? Let our WR coach handle WR/TE’s. We will lose Todd Grantham after this year if we don’t promote him to HC, he’s too good, and someone will grab him as HC. Coach Mark Richt better strike now while he has Todd Grantham. Rise and fall…

GT will not beat Ga. I have followed Ga Southern for years and can tell you the spread option doesn’t work against a truly “stout” defensive line like Georgia’s. That offense only works when the “fullback dive” play works and there is no better front seven in college football than Georgia’s.
If Georgia gets a crack at either Bama or LSU you will see that. This “D” is slowly evolving into one of the top “D’s” in all of college football…and barring injury will propel the Dawgs into the preseason top 10 next year. The one weakness is the secondary. Every game they give up big plays due to missed assignments, a trend that has to stop. They simply get “fooled” on several big plays each game, but a running team is toast against the front seven, so no win for the Jackets this year.

Most teams struggle in their 1st yr w/ a new coach. I don’t know that we should call Mus-Chump a bust quite yet. Urban Cryer & NIck Satan struggled in their 1st yr. as well. They’re switching from the spread to a pro style offense as well. Did you people really expect them to dominate everyone in that transition period after they struggled last yr. even w/ the established Cryer? As for the win….it would be nice to dominate, but I’ll take any kind of win against FL. Sure would be nice if UGA could put it all together. I think there’s potential there, but a lot of injuries are starting to pop up. Just hope we get back as many players as we can against AU, bc it looks like we’re going to need them. As far as the schedule goes, you play who you play, but people keep talking like UGAs going to lose, & then when they win people still complain. At least they’re winning those games unlike last yr. That’s a move in the rt. direction as far as I’m concerned. I sure hope RBs Crowell Samuel get healthy enough at least to be affective, & the same goes for M. Mitchell & I. Troupe, & not to mention OL Austin Long now that Dallas Lee is out. UGAs good, but they just seem to lack depth at certain positions. Go Dawgs!

MB. The “complainers” you refer too aren’t unhappy w/the dawgs win over FL but the way the dawgs almost gave the game away is the underlying reason for discontent. The same issues, i.e., special teams, inconsistent offensive play calling, etc, which were supposed to be addressed week after week have gotten worse in each game after the first two losses. This trend of getting worse instead of better in these areas will no doubt come back and be the reasons for defeat in remaining games and be fodder for your future columns on the state of GA football. Bottom line, CMR and his offensive staff apparently don’t know how to fix the wrongs we constantly see week after week and its frustrating to fans that do not want to settle for 2nd best any longer. I’m not one to get rid of Richt, but to see the same woes every game how can you not hold the HC and certain coaches on his staff responsible for not correcting them?? Its painful to watch a team you love being under coached and no one is being held accountable. Coaches learn from their mistakes and are paid to correct them not too continually make the same errors week in and week out.

Warmth? Yep, warm enough to probably make it to the SCE title game. Warm enough for Richt to be coaching at UGA the next few years. They are only going to get better and better. Defense wins championships. How many did Bama win with a mediocre offense? Several. UGA defense is smokin under Grantham!

UGA heat check should be: Smokin…….thanks to the Defense!

Confused? Let me sum it up Bradley! Its the same ignorant, young vocal minority who have been calling for Richts head for the last 2 years, whoc dont have a clue and have led you media around by your laptops and johnson’s talking about Richt on the hot seat, Richt on the hot seat….what a TERRIBLE off-season it was due to this! it was all blown out of proportion and you should have been wiser than to let some young igmos wag the dog….media hype, thanks to younguns and columnists eating their ignorant crap up.

Mark Richt coached a fine game on Saturday. And, as Dooley said, Richt will be at UGA for a very long time. So funny see the true colors of the Richt haters. They actually would have preferred UGA to lose. They have never been true fans. A true fan never wants his team to lose. The main concern is not that Richt will get fired, he will not. The main concern is that he will retire. Lets hope not. I think the likely option is he gets a long-term contract extension for recruiting sake and because he is a heck of a good coach.

I am a UGA fan who now lives in SC. I disagree with you about Dabo: he went out and hired a new OC because he was getting heat from the fans: and this decision has turned out great this year. On the other hand, UGA still has Bobo as it’s OC which means we will never win the SEC championship as long as he still holds this position. Richt made some good hires on defense but the special teams are terrible. For Richt to keep his job, no matter what his record ends up being, he needs to be told by our AD: fire bobo or you are gone.

At what point do you Richt haters finally shut the heck up? We are certain to be 8-4 with a win over UF. There is no way he doesn’t come back. We will most likely be 9-3 or even 10-2 and will play in the SECCG. He will not be fired. He will get a decent extension because recruiting will go down the tubes if he doesn’t get one. There isn’t a better representative for the University (esp.in Adams eyes, who wields the biggest stick). Get over it.

Playing for the SEC Champ after a 6-7 season isn’t good enough? I know, I know, if it weren’t for the schedule…..look how far Bama and LSU are ahead of us….

Why would Chris Petersen want to coach for some of the worst turn coat fans in the country? No matter what he is paid, why would he leave a comfy 1.6 mil/yr to 2015 on the West Coast (where he is from) recruiting guys just like himself with the support of great fans who don’t b*tch and complain if they don’t win the NC? All it would take is jumping on these blogs to read some of the garbage that is posted before he would decide this is no where he wants to be.

@HT 10:43…. the last time Richt was so bold was when he had a Van Gorder D. You will agree with me a stout D changes everything now on offensive philosophy… How many times did we hand UF a short field on special teams play and we knocked them back… We can now take chances that we were not able to last year because of our stout D.

Believe me, 90% of the UGA fans were thrilled with the win over FL, no matter how it was done. One particular poster to this board like to throw rocks just to get the attention of the others. Most everyone in the media was saying that if UGA started 0-2, the season would completely go into the ditch. CMR and his staff has done a very good job of keeping the team focused each week and winning. Don’t go by what you read on this board, the negative posters don’t represent the majority of UGA fans. Exactly, and critics point ot the opponents UGA has played during the winning streak. Well that was how it unfolded this year and all they can do is play the schedule layed out before them. This team could have easily nose dived the season after starting 0-2 and little credit is given to this coaching staff for not allowing that. On top of keeping the team together CMR and company have ran the table since then. That is a credit to CMR’s leadership of this program. I commend them for the work they have put in thus far.

Maybe budget cuts etc.I do understand that in past years UGA would tire in the latter part of the game.Using there starters on spec. teams wasn’t wooking either.UGA is building the depth thats needed. the conditioning is awhole better!!!!!!!!! Now they are playing Georgia Football. It’s great the Braves are at a point where not making the playoffs is a let down. The Dawgs met with a depleted Fla team and let them get big plays right off the bat. Special teams were embarrassing. They stumbled through the gave and to give them credit they pulled together and pulled it out. On the other hand Tech met a Clemson team that had everything going for them, rank, confidence and an undefeated season. Tech jumped on them and didn’t let them back up even with the terrible non-call of offsides when Tech was going to put up even more points on them.

Don’t know if we’re the new big horse in the SEC just yet but we will be soon. We are playing as many freshmen and sophomores as anyone in the country and we are winning with them. Yes, some of the wins look ugly but that is what you get with youth in this league and they are wins nonetheless.

One of the main reasons the haters are out in full force and throat is that they know this. They know this team is going to be SCARY GOD for several years to come. Its killing them already.

Truth, I’ll tell ya what. My name nor my participation on a UGA blog won’t be changed by wins or losses and you won’t find me on another team’s blog except to say congratulations. The same can’t be said for you.

Smokin? Georgia fans should be happy that the team won on Saturday, but that’s about it. Be humble and not get too carried away here just yet. The only thing that should be on fire is the Dawgs’ special teams game plan.

Dawgs are smokin’? Great to have a victory over the Gators, but let’s not jump the gun here. Long way to go before we can go around acting like world beaters. The only thing really that should be on fire is the special teams’ playbook. IF they even have one.

Speaking of the Dawgs, I am happy for the turnaround. You can’t be a top 5 team every year. Teams go through down times and the Dawgs are in it. They will be back soon enough. I’m just happy they have won 6 out of 8 games after last years disappointing season. Now if they win their remaining games and the bowl game, then that would be a great season. I don’t think any team will beat the winner of this Saturdays national champion game between LSU and Alabama. Those teams look like pro teams playing high school teams each week.

Bad news for Gators….Dawgs will be even better next year. They are really young…and talented…and this Jerk that wrote this article talks about the Dawgs as Road kill. Florida will not be much better next year. Running a pro set without a proven Qb, RB’s,TE’s Wr’s…….They have a lot of holes to fill….and starting 8 or 9 hot shot freshman won’t fix things. Look for muschamp to be fired mid season in year 3. The are delusional down there and have no patience.

Before I’d get all excited about extending Richt’s contract because of a 4 point win over FL as one blogger suggests, I think I’d wait till after the SEC Championship game provided he makes it there. Winning the East won’t mean a lot after Saban/Miles(take your pick) beats him like a drum on national TV.

Dawgs still don’t have a win over a team with a wining record. New Mexico this week. Another laugher. Give the AD credit for the easy schedule. Auburn and Tech on the horizon, things are going to get sticky. But Richt is safe. 4 or 5 losses is considered good in Dawg Patch.

So, Mark, doesn’t changing direction on which team is great so fast hurt your neck? Last week the Jackets were terrible – the first 6 games all an illusion — now, we are great again? Dabo was the second coming a week ago, now he’s dirt. The Dogs couldn’t beat Fl with a stick but now deserve #18. Looks like you just float with whoever looks good at the moment.
But thanks for the bulletin board material over the last 2 weeks — I’m sure it helped get the Jackets fired up for Saturday.

I saw the game until the score was 3 – 17 with UF on top.
I was sick thinking we’d be routed.
I had to go to the kid’s school Haloween Party and missed the rest of the game.

Called my brother – in – law who told me The Dawgs won 24 – 20.
I didn’t believe him – I thought he was bust’in my balls.

The Dawgs looked so bad in the first quarter I couldn’t believe they’d come back to win it.
It must have been on hell of a second half or fourth quarter from what I am reading.

Gonna have to watch a rerun.
I still think we’ve played patsy teams except for the two that beat us – which is not a good endorsement. I mean Garcia tried to give us the SC Game but we were too inept to take it.

Boise State just beat us – no contest.

I don’t think The Dawgs will end up in The SECC and if they do does anyone believe they can beat LSU?

Herschel Talker – do you even go to the games? The last thing I thought about at Everbank Stadium, driving back to Jax Beach and later hanging with all my Georgia friends who made the trip was posting on a stupid blog. Hell, I did not even read any AJC articles until this evening. What the Dawg Nation needs is for ignorant A-holes like you to go away and shut the hell up. Mark Richt is a very good coach and just what Georgia needs. You think Saban is going to come to UGA? Maybe you can pay him the $10 mil a year he would want just to think about a switch. Unless you have given millions to the Hartman Fund (go look it up, I am sure you have no idea what that is) over the years, again, shut the hell up. Mark Richt has two SEC Championships, three SEC East titles, 7 top 10 finishes, 2 top 3 finishes, 102 victories in less than 11 years, 2 Sugar Bowl Championships in 3 appearance, and is 7-3 in bowl appearances. Georgia is a program on the rise again. These are cyclical. Mark Richt will get his chance at a NC again and he will bring home SEC titles again and maybe even will do it this year. A lot of our woes in 2009 and 2010 were a result of early departures for the NFL. This is also a young team. And, the problems with the coaching staff have been addressed. And, tougher schedule next year? Again, if you actually knew anything about the program you would know it is no harder next year. We drop Boise for the opener and add Alabama who will lose many players this year to the NFL. Another open weekend before Florida. UT and Tech in Athens. UGA will have a chance for a very special season next year.

@ HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAH, Actually, Georgia does rank as one of the top academic schools in the country. US News and World Report consistently ranks UGA in the top 10 for Public Universities and has UGA in the top half of the first tier college and universities. US News and World Report also ranks UGA’s Law School in the top 30 out of the 183 ABA accredited schools. And, recently, the Economist in London ranked the top 100 business schools out of the 1,600 in the world. Only two in Georgia made the ranking. #28 Emory, #90 UGA. Georgia Tech’s business school did not make the cut. Then again, Georgia has a nationally known School of Education, School of Veterinary Medicine, History Department in the College of Arts and Sciences and one of the better Biology programs in the country. Delude yourself as much as you want. Go to Tech and find yourself unable to get a job in engineering, let alone a high paying job, and live in bitterness. Or, get yourself so in debt at a private school which won’t actually get a you a better eduation or job when you graduate but will put you $100K in debt.

Congrats to Tech on a great game. I was pulling for y’all. Just a stellar overall effort.

A little-known kernel of truth hidden in all of this: Georgia’s full-strength defense is so good that it can keep them in the game against anyone–including LSU and Alabama. If the special teams meltdowns can be rectified (Georgia has given up big punt and/or kickoff returns and/or fake punts for big yardage which either scored or set up scores against Boise State, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt and Florida, and has had shanked or blocked punts and missed chip shot field goals against almost everyone), the Dawgs could have a shot against either of the two big boys from the West. The offense is diversified and talented, although depth is an issue, and the D is as good as they come (seventh nationally in total defense, first nationally in third-down conversions, etc).

The Georgia-Georgia Tech game this year will be a classic “irresistable force against immovable object” battle–the Tech running game against the Georgia run defense. Should be a great one–and I add my voice to the chorus about wanting to see two division champs squaring off at Grant Field the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Go Dawgs and Go Jackets!
