A sight seldom seen in Jacksonville: Mark Richt victorious. (AJC photo by Jason Getz)
Jacksonville — At halftime Mark Richt invoked the fresh memory of the St. Louis Cardinals. “Guys that don’t quit have a chance,” he told his Georgia Bulldogs.
Much later, Richt would tell the assembled media: “We didn’t quit.”
Folks can and will argue over the worth of one victory over a Florida team that hasn’t won since September, but no one can question the weight that had fallen on the Bulldogs regarding their strange inability to win this one game. “There was some history and some demons,” Richt said, and the way this game began it was as if those demons would beat Georgia by themselves.
Florida’s first play from scrimmage netted 72 yards. Its first touchdown came on a fourth-and-19 pass 7 1/2 minutes into the game. (Who goes for it on fourth-and-19 so early in any game?) Its second touchdown came on a 99-yard kickoff return by its second-best returner. Everything that had gone wrong for Georgia in this series the past two decades was going wrong all at once, but that, in a weird way, might have been for the best.
Said cornerback Brandon Boykin: “You could say a lot of bad things happened. We had to calm down. But this team is special. After we lost to Boise, I told people, ‘Don’t worry about this team.’ We’ve bounced back.”
Said offensive coordinator Mike Bobo of his team’s 17-3 deficit: “Nobody said, ‘Hey, here we go again.’ ”
Surely a few Bulldogs thought it, but they put aside any nattering negativity to focus on the task at hand. Said Todd Grantham, the defensive coordinator: “That game was a test of our mental toughness. We kept going. We kept playing the next play.”
One play changed this game and maybe the course of Georgia’s season. The same Richt who’d ordered a field goal on fourth-and-goal against Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl last December rediscovered the nerve that had marked him as a young head coach. Ninety seconds before halftime, his team down 14 points, Richt had Aaron Murray throw into the end zone on fourth-and-five. Michael Bennett hauled it down, and from there Georgia believed.
Said Alec Ogletree, the superb linebacker: “Once the offense scored right before halftime, we fed off that.”
The Gators’ offense, overseen by the famous Charlie Weis, would manage 32 yards and one first down in the second half against Grantham’s defenders. With quarterback John Brantley unable to work under center due to an ankle injury, Florida went almost exclusively to the empty backfield, and Grantham, cogitating on the fly, trumped Weis at every turn.
Grantham: “It’s a credit to our players … From halftime on, we were playing a new game plan.”
Midway through the third quarter, Richt did it again. His team down seven points, Richt chose to have Murray throw again — to different receiver down a different sideline — on fourth-and-six, and Tarvarres King outfought Jaylen Watkins for the ball. At last, the game was tied. It would come untied due to a field goal generated by another long kickoff return, but by then Georgia had made its point: This day would not be like other days against the hated Gators.
Richt: “I just thought the best thing to do was to go for it on fourth down. I just felt like we needed a touchdown. I didn’t think threes were going to get it.”
The fourth quarter was all Bulldogs, and they celebrated in a way that far outstripped a four-point victory over a 4-4 opponent. What did this game mean? Said King: “Everything. We’re back.”
Again, that might be overstating. But when a team has failed so often in this venue, any break in the pattern is major news. “Now that it’s over,” Richt said, “I can say, ‘Yeah, it was a big deal.’ It was a big deal for me personally.”
For two years we’ve parsed Georgia results and asked, “What does this mean for Richt’s job status?” After Saturday, we can say this much for sure: Richt’s Bulldogs started 0-2 but have won six in a row; they’ve beaten Florida, which hadn’t happened since 2007, and they’ve kept themselves in position to take the SEC East if South Carolina slips. At this moment, it’s almost impossible to imagine Georgia parting ways with this coach anytime soon.
No, this isn’t the most polished bunch you’ll see. (Richt described his special team as “mostly average to scary.”) But Georgia spotted Florida 14 points and held its nerve in a way the Gators — 14 penalties for 106 yards — could not. In a game where the Bulldogs invariably invent ways to lose, they found a way to win. They might not be the smoothest-running bunch, but these ‘Dogs will hunt — and fight.

Hey, I’m always glad to see the Dawgs beat Florida. Dawg fans wear the Jacksonville Jinx like an albatros around their necks. But being realistic, that was a deeply beat up and transitional FL team we saw yesterday and we barely escaped them. No, the Dawgs didn’t do their usual meltdown and should get credit for that. But it wasn’t like we owned Florida and we can’t count on them being that injured every year. Some of Richt’s comments make you wonder what he had riding on that game. Probably a lot. Looks like we keep him another year, and that makes me wonder if we really won that game or not. Winning the East is not the goal, winning the SEC is and winning the East is just how you get to Conference Championship. IF the Dawgs do get there, and play like they did today against either LSU or AL, it’s going to be a very very very ugly and painful day.

All the fottball experts on this blog! Maybe CMR should have his smart phone on his side during the game and call plays via the blog!!!! Let’s enjoy the win get better and go win the next one. Murray was not 100% perfect but he did not throw into coverage and lose the game! I also think it is a hidden blessing that Walsh is having a bad year it has brought CMR back to giving his team a edge by being agressive
All the CMR haters will always find something to gripe about but CMR isn’t going anywhere he will win the next four.

If I didn’t know better I would have thought we were back in the Ron Zook era…we’re not bad we are terrible. No WR’s, no running game,13 penalties, and that is just the obvious. I was surprised we were even close. Georgia tried several times to give us the game but we are so bad we could not take advantage of it. Dawgs did what they had to do….win, something we don’t know anything about right now.

Some comments:
-Isaiah can run but he either has no heart or he’s a pu$$y.
-Blair Walsh has turned into the Blair Witch project. Are him and Butler smoking crack with the kickoff team? All of a sudden we can’t kick and we can’t punt!!!
-we need a qualified, full time special teams coach and we need to have our first team defensive players on the kickoff and punt teams. The walk ons are killing us.

HAHAHAHA! All of the naysayers are out again. We beat a Florida team that only a year ago had the “GREATEST RECRUITING CLASS IN THE HISTORY OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL” That team had crap loads of talent – a Super Bowl quality offensive coordinator and a commonly called defensive genius for a coach. They lost 2 of those three games to the #1 and #2 teams in the country………..and they had their best QB back and even though he was gimpy he was throwing well. We beat a good team and WE’RE NOT APOLOGIZING FOR THAT! Do we have issues? Yes……..our special teams need a ton of work, our kickers are in a slump and Murray needs to be CONSISTENT. Our defensive team is coming together. As for Tech – THEY BEAT ANOTHER OVERRANKED ACC TEAM JUST LIKE THEY WERE A FEW WEEKS AGO! Clemson? HAHAHAHAHA! They have been giving up boatloads of points on defense to everybody – beating them is not an upset – it’s just the ACC bottom dwellers feeding on each other. But I say, good for them. I’m not going to rain on their parade – they got a good win. GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We beat the lizards and life is good!!!!!!!

Big deal. Richt, now 3 and 8 against FL, that’s 3 wins in 11 years, beats one of the worse FL teams in the last several years with a quarterback who was not recovered from an ankle injury that severely limited his mobility and effectiveness. So what. Richt still has yet to prove anything against a good teasm. See the Boise State score.

I was wondering how long before the yall would bring it up about Brantley not being 100%, or this and that. Brantley had 200+ passing yards in the 1st half morons, and looked good. Grantham just out coached Weis and Mushchamp in the 2nd. Enough said.

Buzz, the Clemson tigers deserved to be nbr 5 just like you deserved to be in the top 15 earlier this year. When you do face the DAWGS, then you will find your place as the lower tier of Universities in the state of Georgia once again. Of course then your usual excuse will be that your academics are so high, you can’t get the athletes that UGA does. How many engineer students does Tech. have exactly that are playing football for Tech? It is pathetic that you would come on a UGA blog and start bragging like your team has really returned. Do the names Miami and U of Virginia mean anything to you? For crying out loud, you play in the ACC. Save you chants and comments about UGA when your team has really done something. Your team will get it’s early Christmas present handed to them the week after thanksgiving as usual. Until then, cheer for your victories in the ACC, and hope your conference looks better than the Big East this year. You really make your fan base look pathetic. We lost to the legitimate nbr 5 team in the country in Boise, and at the time, nbr 11 S.C. Either of those teams would hand you your lunch bucket and you come onto a UGA blog and brag about beating another ACC team, like it was some great accomplishment. Brag when you have something legitimate to brag about.

The same Mark Bradley who downplayed the Falcons beating the Panthers by 2 touchdowns is thrilled by the Dawgs winning that embarrassing display of football in Jacksonville yesterday? Florida is a lousy team that has no semblance of a running game, can’t stop the run, a gimpy QB who couldn’t figure out the 25 second play clock, and to top it off they committed 14 penalties. At one point Brantley was something like 2 for his last 14 passes while Murray was working on a streak of 9 incompletions in a row. The passing games looked like a bad Big 10 game. Georgia special teams were horrible even relative to their normally low standards, couldn’t cover kicks and Butler caught whatever disease Walsh has. Crowell took himself out of the game yet again for a quarter and a half with a boo boo.
Hopefully Arkansas can beat South Carolina and Georgia can beat Kentucky and Auburn because I want to see this Georgia team play Alabama or LSU. What would the over-under be on when Crowell would take himself out of the game against either of those defenses?

Maybe now they know the importance of getting a week off before facing Florida. Hopefully the Spurrier Curse is broken. Jarvis Jones we’re glad you decided to come back to Georgia. Inspired running by Richard Samuel.
Doesnt our Defense start to resemble the old Erk Russell Junk Yard Dogs of yester year? FINALLY! Finally starting to look like a UNIT. An “F” goes to our beloved Special Teams, Richt has got to get a Special Teams Coach.
Offensive Line played better but Aaron Murray unfortunately played terrible. Our defense kept us in the game while the offense and special teams were trying to give it away. I dont think there will be a bigger test on the run defense when we play Ga. Tech in a few weeks.
Better get in shape and get some miami tapes on how they stopped Ga. Tech my friends. They blew out Clemson and Clemson has a good defense no doubt. Aaron Murray is still playing like a highschool QB and needs to start looking for his #2 and 3 recievers.
In alot of areas we showed strength but it also exposed our weak ones as well. You cant give away 10 pts. and expect to be in a game. Congrads on the win but you still have 2 more to play and atleast those games dont have a mental block on them like florida did.

B’dawg…..
If you haven’t noticed, Matt Jones (the number one RB in Florida and the back that Bama really wanted) and Mike Davis (the talented RB from Atlatna) and both on their way to Gainesville.
And…..Jeff Driskell and Jacoby Brissett are going to be outstanding QBs for Florida. They are just freshmen, and you don’t win in the SEC with true freshmen QBs. I think both will be better than Aaron Murray……who…..frankly…..is very overrated and very inconsistent.
Now….to the game.
Gongrats, Dawg fans, on the victory over Florida. As a reward, you get to keep Richt as your coach. I am sure that make many of you very happy little pups.
1. Think Georgia would have won that game yesterday if Brantley had been able to play on two legs? I seriously doubt it. He was playing on no legs in the second half….and I am not sure why he was playing, to be honest. He was horrible in the second half…..and obviously in a lot of pain. I think the Gators would have beeb better off playing Driskell or Brissett in the second half…..QBs who could actually turn and hand off the football to someone.
2. Georgia got the calls yesterday because of Muschamp’s consistent battering of the refs all year.,,,including yesterday. The non-call on pass interference against Jordan Reed that everyone in the stadium saw was a result of that, I believe, as well as the two, late pass interference calls that went against Florida. That pass interference call on Jaylan Watkins running down the sideline was a total joke. No way that call should have that call been made, and it lead to Georgia’s go ahead TD. And I don’t think the refs make that call on Roberson, either, if Mushcamp had not been so negative towards the refs all year. But Muschamp made his bed, and his team paid the price for it yesterday.
3. Florida was badly wounded yesterday……but they are horribly undisciplined……and not very well coached by Muschamp. After watching him all year, I am not sold on him as the head coach. He will get his time to prove me wrong……but he needs to make a lot of changes if he is going to be a great coach at Florida. He simply seems lost on the sidelines at this point. But he is a rookie coach, and hopefully he will learn and become better at his job.
4. Florida is not a very good team this year. And Georgia isn’t much better. That is a fact. A really good team beats Florida by 30 or more yesterday. How do you think LSU and Bama would have played against a one-legged Florida QB yesterday? If you make it to Atlanta, you will be 30 point underdawgs. So will South Carolina. The SEC East is in total shambles this year.
5. I do think Muschamp will learn from his mistakes this year, will have an outstanding recruiting class this year, and Florida will come back strong next year……although they are two years away from being SEC contenders again.
Anyway……enjoy your year…..Dawg fans. You have earned it. But…..beating this year’s wounded and young Gator team by 4 points (I predicted Georgia would win by 3 points) is nothing to brag much about…..as it would have been if Florida had won the game. Those were two “not ready for prime time” teams we watched yesterday.

1)Our D again played really good in 2nd half.
2)Bobo was pretty bad.
3)Murray was pretty bad.
4)Special teams – bad yet again.
5)Walsh and Butler both played like Braves in September(choked).
6)We won.
We have lost so many games in the past 20 years vs UF, and so many in the past 2+ years period, that it is refreshing to win some games, when we didn’t play our best.
One other thing. Didn’t UF celebrate their wins over our 8-5 and 6-7 Dawgs the past two seasons? Damn right they did.
So dont say anything about me celebrating this win over 4-4 UF.

B’dawg…..
None of the 5 were excuses why Florida lost yesterday……Florida lost because Georgia outscored them. That is how football is played.
I was just saying that Muschamp made his own bed with the refs this year….and it showed in the game yesterday on at least 3 bad calls (on Reed and againstt Watkins)…..and on one very close call on Roberson. Georgia outplayed Florida yesterday in the second half and made the plays when they needed to…..including two great catches in the end zone on 4th down plays that won you the game……Florida did not have those playmakers at WR or RB yesterday (but did have fumbles by Rainey and Hammond that set up your winning TD opportuities on 4th down).
So…..no excuses. Just observations.

Tampa Gator,
The second half stats for the Gators were 32 total yards and 1 first down. I believe they finished minus yards in rushing with two of the fastest people running for them in the NCAA. Brantley had a half decent first half of passing until you consider that most of his yardage was yards after the catch, by you two speedy backs. Florida’s offensive line couldn’t protect your QB and he took six sacks. He was never a threat to run the ball, so they would have been sacks no matter what. UGA’s special teams, is in need of real repair right now, and even after their gaffs, UGA still won the game. The fumbles you say that gave UGA easy touchdown passes were caused by the superior defensive team that UGA had.
All of the above was not caused by the refs. There are a few bad calls in every game. Players and coaches lose games, not refs. Besides, Mushcamp waited till the midlle of the third quarter before he once again blew up. Florida hasn’t had a lot of offense all year except for your two speedy back, so that is no excuse.
Face it, the better team won yesterday, just like it goes in almost all games pitting teams against each other.

Tampa Gator, you can talk all you want about incoming recruits at RB (wasn’t Mack Brown supposed to be a big time back?) and how freshmen QBs who are horrible this year are going to develop, but until Florida gets back the toughness on both lines of scrimmage they somehow lost in the last 2 years they’re going to take a lot of beatings. What happened to that 2010 recruiting class with a dozen or so ESPN top 150’s that some were proclaiming the best in college football history? The highly recruited defensive linemen who were comparing themselves LeBron, D-Wade and Bosh before they played a snap in the SEC are getting the ball run down their throats as sophomores.
