A sight seldom seen in Jacksonville: Mark Richt victorious. (AJC photo by Jason Getz)
Jacksonville — At halftime Mark Richt invoked the fresh memory of the St. Louis Cardinals. “Guys that don’t quit have a chance,” he told his Georgia Bulldogs.
Much later, Richt would tell the assembled media: “We didn’t quit.”
Folks can and will argue over the worth of one victory over a Florida team that hasn’t won since September, but no one can question the weight that had fallen on the Bulldogs regarding their strange inability to win this one game. “There was some history and some demons,” Richt said, and the way this game began it was as if those demons would beat Georgia by themselves.
Florida’s first play from scrimmage netted 72 yards. Its first touchdown came on a fourth-and-19 pass 7 1/2 minutes into the game. (Who goes for it on fourth-and-19 so early in any game?) Its second touchdown came on a 99-yard kickoff return by its second-best returner. Everything that had gone wrong for Georgia in this series the past two decades was going wrong all at once, but that, in a weird way, might have been for the best.
Said cornerback Brandon Boykin: “You could say a lot of bad things happened. We had to calm down. But this team is special. After we lost to Boise, I told people, ‘Don’t worry about this team.’ We’ve bounced back.”
Said offensive coordinator Mike Bobo of his team’s 17-3 deficit: “Nobody said, ‘Hey, here we go again.’ ”
Surely a few Bulldogs thought it, but they put aside any nattering negativity to focus on the task at hand. Said Todd Grantham, the defensive coordinator: “That game was a test of our mental toughness. We kept going. We kept playing the next play.”
One play changed this game and maybe the course of Georgia’s season. The same Richt who’d ordered a field goal on fourth-and-goal against Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl last December rediscovered the nerve that had marked him as a young head coach. Ninety seconds before halftime, his team down 14 points, Richt had Aaron Murray throw into the end zone on fourth-and-five. Michael Bennett hauled it down, and from there Georgia believed.
Said Alec Ogletree, the superb linebacker: “Once the offense scored right before halftime, we fed off that.”
The Gators’ offense, overseen by the famous Charlie Weis, would manage 32 yards and one first down in the second half against Grantham’s defenders. With quarterback John Brantley unable to work under center due to an ankle injury, Florida went almost exclusively to the empty backfield, and Grantham, cogitating on the fly, trumped Weis at every turn.
Grantham: “It’s a credit to our players … From halftime on, we were playing a new game plan.”
Midway through the third quarter, Richt did it again. His team down seven points, Richt chose to have Murray throw again — to different receiver down a different sideline — on fourth-and-six, and Tarvarres King outfought Jaylen Watkins for the ball. At last, the game was tied. It would come untied due to a field goal generated by another long kickoff return, but by then Georgia had made its point: This day would not be like other days against the hated Gators.
Richt: “I just thought the best thing to do was to go for it on fourth down. I just felt like we needed a touchdown. I didn’t think threes were going to get it.”
The fourth quarter was all Bulldogs, and they celebrated in a way that far outstripped a four-point victory over a 4-4 opponent. What did this game mean? Said King: “Everything. We’re back.”
Again, that might be overstating. But when a team has failed so often in this venue, any break in the pattern is major news. “Now that it’s over,” Richt said, “I can say, ‘Yeah, it was a big deal.’ It was a big deal for me personally.”
For two years we’ve parsed Georgia results and asked, “What does this mean for Richt’s job status?” After Saturday, we can say this much for sure: Richt’s Bulldogs started 0-2 but have won six in a row; they’ve beaten Florida, which hadn’t happened since 2007, and they’ve kept themselves in position to take the SEC East if South Carolina slips. At this moment, it’s almost impossible to imagine Georgia parting ways with this coach anytime soon.
No, this isn’t the most polished bunch you’ll see. (Richt described his special team as “mostly average to scary.”) But Georgia spotted Florida 14 points and held its nerve in a way the Gators — 14 penalties for 106 yards — could not. In a game where the Bulldogs invariably invent ways to lose, they found a way to win. They might not be the smoothest-running bunch, but these ‘Dogs will hunt — and fight.

Bobo’s gameplan was poor, outpass Florida with the biggest O-Line in football going up against an undersized UF D-Line???? Threw it up 37 times, missed on over half. Averaged 5.5 yards per pass, which is terrible. Run game was cooking, Samuel and Crowell ran well. Should have run the ball more in the first half, that was plain dumb and almost let the game get away, UF built a 17-3 lead.

I’m glad we won but tell me how do two states with so many great high school football players put two such mediocre teams on the field, They are not disciplined. They don’t play intelligent ball and they don’t play together as a team.

Mark Richt, when not settling for field goals, beat Florida. Chris Rainey, with his girlfriend still alive to witness it, gave the game to Georgia to insure itself of being the worst Florida team in 24 years. Chris Conley really showed us all he is a great receiver. Marlon Brown stepped up. Richard Samuel aimed his body forward. Florida has no offense. None. I never saw a team have so many costly penalties as Florida handed to us to today. That is a miserable Florida team. Aaron Murray won a game over an unranked opponent, threw an interception, was way off target all night long again, and showed some heart out there like he had shown us last season and gutted it out against a good Florida defense. Anytime you beat Florida, it is important. South Carolina won; in fact all the teams we beat all lost. On a day many of those ranked way ahead of us in the polls, lost, we won in JAX. We used to always win in JAX. We do seem headed to my 11-3; I hope so. We cut down on penalties, although we flirt with celebration; and don’t need to take off the scoreboard one of our touchdowns. Good gracious, do we need special teams coaching staff. Against a good team, those would have had us losing handily tonight. We beat a team who has Won 3 Consensus National Championships in the last 14 years, and who has been significantly better than us in our own Division of our own conference the entire Mark Richt era. They are a down team, an unranked, worst Florida team in 24 years. We won. It was known that we would win. This is not a testament to Mark Richt that the game was played in the fashion it was played, by us. Mark Richt needed to win this game to get his record against Florida to the same record he enjoys in his 11 years, against teams who finished in the Top 10. Mark Richt’s win total is not worth your time writing about. We play 14-game seasons nowadays when 10-win seasons in the past, meant that you had lost at most, 1 game. We’ve lost 2 and have at least 1 more loss coming, I hope. I say I hope because South Carolina has a very easy schedule this season too, and we handed that football game to South Carolina on a Silver Platter.
Tavares King and Michael Bennett did well. Aron White drops passes, and always has. Shawn Williams fell on the fumble, and did not look like a dumba** to me, again. If the officials had had their way, Shawn Williams does not get a fumble recovery. In the old days, not having that Chris Rainey fumble, costs us the game – quite obviously. Bacarri Rambo got torched on the TD, and for good measure picked Alec Ogletree; but, he too came up with a fumble recovery and a pass break-up. And, it was Alec Ogletree who caused the fumble. Jarvis Jones had 1 of those 2, and 4 sacks by himself. We need to get some of these kinds on guys on the field on kick-off coverage, like our better opponents do. Have a ST coach, and that would be his 1st action. Brandon Boykin had a good game. Might as well be a hundred years, and in 2005 we ended up not # 1 in The SEC in the polls but # 3 of just SEC teams. 2002 only a 4-loss Auburn ended up in the Coaches’ Poll Top 25 with us. But, we LOST to Florida BOTH of those seasons.
I think we can all agree that the dawgs won despite inept, not so special teams and erratic QB play but to win regardless means that the rest of the team more than made up for these inadequacies.

We have a new “4th and Dumb.” Muschamp completely choked going for it on 4th and long from near midfield with 5:36 still left to play and a chance to pin us deep. You punt the ball, pin the other team deep, and trust your defense to get the ball back.
When we stopped them on 4th and long, which was pretty predictable, and flipped the field position, you just knew we were going to win. What was he thinking?

“We could have easily scored another touchdown at the end,but Coach Richt has class..”
Not to run another play has nothing to do with class. I guess you didn’t see the Vandy-Ark game today. Vandy fumbled on the 3 yard line and the Hogs took it 97 yards to the house which basically cost the Commodores the game. Although a low probability, the Dawgs could have run a play but also could have fumbled. Class in that situation would be taking a knee if you were up by 9 or more.

I measure GA’s wins by how good I feel after the game. Glad we won but I still do not feel good about GA’s Offense and especially special teams. Murray sputtered and bobo’s playcalling stalled. Except for the two TD passes he had a poor passing day. Had one int but it was tipped. I think ga has the worst special teams in the country. After the season CMR better hire a ST coach. Walsh will graduate but need a kicking coach as well. Walsh once had a bright pro future. Doubt he’ll ever recover from his poor senior season. Where the hell is Boo Malcolme??? The D played great except for the lapse in pass coverage by Rambo on FL’s first TD. Yeah, when I look at the way GA played they’re still not ready for prime time.

First of all to ‘Barack Bush’ – that was totally off-topic and silly, but it gave me a really big LOL.
Second, I am really bothered by the Special Teams and Murray’s execution, but I will certainly take this one. I’ve been really hot and cold with CMR for the past 3 seasons – in the end, I wanted him to stay after last season, but haven’t had much confidence this year. I’m still unsure about the quality of the coaching our guys are getting. Felt like we stepped onto the field unprepared for the start, but we did warm up. I’m happy. This wasn’t a superstar, high-quality, dominating win, but I’ve always just been of the opinion that it doesn’t have to be pretty – just a W at the end of the day.
The best things I saw were that 1)This team showed some heart and they did stick to it – I felt like they were really into this one; and 2)Not nearly as much crap going on in the way of unsportsmanlike conduct –
He might have saved his job today. I’m expecting wins against KY, NMSt, and Auburn; but I think we’re gonna have trouble w/ Tech. If he does what I just described, I expect to see him back next year… and if that happens, I think that it’ll then be time to take a look for a new O coordinator. Bobo is simply not cutting it.
Just my two cents…

you know, for years, fla people talked about us keeping Richt, signing him to a 5 year contract and all that.. . . . after numerous delay of game penalties, questionable decisions, and quite a few false starts, it’s nice to see the other side answering the coaching questions.
I’m sure about a year ago though, there would have been quite a few people calling for Muschamp to be HC at UGA. Very happy that did not happen.

What can I say not to ruin this rare moment ? What can I say not to inflame the drunken delusional kool-aid base who are immensely overjoyed with a very awkward, clumsy win over a hated rival who is obviously down. This was a very sloppy win by Georgia over the worst UF squad in 20 years. I have to say the Dawgs were awful and still are worse than awful in certain areas on the team.
The quarterback position still is not SEC calibre and Richt or Bobo don’t have the ability to open up a competition unless the backups are more inadequate. There is not much coaching going on at the quarterback position or the hapless special teams. The kicker, punter, and return teams are pathetic and probably among the nations worst in Division I. Kudos to Grantham’s defensive unit, who appears to be the only solid performers on this mediocre team Richt has woefully assembled. Todd Grantham here’s a word of advice, at seasons end you need to shop yourself around and find a DC position with another team. Texas A&M, who lost another game due to a send half defensive collaspe will love to talk to you. As would Clemson’s Dabo Swiney, whose high octane offense could only go so far before losing with DC Kevin Steele’s hocus pocus defense. At either of those programs Grantham could cuss as much as he had to to correct those ailing defenses. Grantham should be tired of being muzzzled by the likes of the “holy one”, Richt who curses secretly in the closet when he thinks the mikes are off. One thing for sure if Richt is retained at UGA, Grantham’s most likely a goner. Now Grantham knows why he was the fifth choice for DC, because everybody else Richt called hungup on him. LOL !
Somebody said after the win over another mediocre opponent more mediocre than UGA, that “the Dawgs are back” ! Just stop it, stop it, stop it, right now ! To quote Mark Richt, whoever on the team said such foolishness, must be a “dumbass” !! Go Dawgs ! It is what it was, a shallow win over a shallow UF team so celebrate if you drink kool-aid. But if you are not delusional you hope that South Carolina wins out or UGA loses to Auburn so the Dawgs don’t get annihlated, embarrased, and massacred in the Dome. Remember with this delusional coaching staff, UGA loses when they win and win when they lose. Peace y’all.
Okay kool-aiders, delusionalists, and reprobates bring the hate, I’m ready for each and every one of you losers out there !!

We won. All the while I was wishing in my head we would lose — to get a new coach — but I was jumping up and down and rooting for my team because I’m a Dawg. I lived in Athens from 5th grade and graduated in the early 80’s. Long gone now, but lucky enough to have witnessed the greatest run UGA ever had. I’m sure I’m not the first person to feel that way. It’s really kind of strange. Even my 11 year old noticed it. I was happy to see a relieved Mark Richt give a post game interview — he’s still a very good guy — and I found myself pulling for him again. If the man can just make a few very needed changes, he can make himself , his players, and all the fans happy. I guess we’ll see. But it feels better to me having gotten of the schnied and beat the Gators, vs. calling for a good man’s job. I hope it all works out.

MEMO #1 TO BOBO: WHEN YOU ARE CLINGING TO A FOUR POINT LEAD AND TRYING TO KILL CLOCK, YOU DON’T CALL A OUTSIDE PITCH TO SAMUELS !!! YOU SHOULD KNOW HE DOESN’T HAVE THE KIND OF SPEED TO GET TO THE CORNER AND IF HE DID GET TO THE CORNER HE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO STOP HIS MOMENTUM AND WILL END UP OUT OF BOUNDS WHICH WILL STOP THE CLOCK !!!
MEMO # 2 TO BOBO: WHILE TRAILING BY 3, WITH SAMUEL POUNDING THE HELL OUT OF THE GATOR D, WHY CALL THE FB SCREEN TO FIGGINS WHEN YOU HAVEN’T PASSED TO HIM ALL SEASON. LUCKILY HE DROPPED THE PASS AND DEFLECTED IT OUT OF BOUNDS. WHY TAKE A DUMB RISK LIKE THAT WHEN ALL YOU HAD TO DO WAS KEEP GIVING THE ROCK TO SAMUELS AND LET HIM SMASH HIS WAY TO THE TD. FINALLY, A PLAY LATER YOU CALL THE RIGHT PLAY. BUT YOU TOOK A NEEDLESS RISK BEFORE YOU CALLED THE CORRECT PLAY. ON A DAY WHEN YOU PLACEKICKER & PUNTER DIDN’T SHOW UP, ON A DAY WHEN YOUR SPECIAL TEAMS ARE NON-EXISTENT, IT COMES DOWN TO COACHING. ONE BAD PLAY CALL COULD BE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WINNING AND LOSING.
BECAUSE UGA’S DEFENSE STOOD THEIR GROUND AGAINST A PUNCHLESS UF OFFENSE, THE DAWGS WON IN SPITE OF THEIR DEFICIENCIES. YOU CAN’T BEAT A BOISE, A SOUTH CAROLINA, A BAMA, A LSU, OR ANY OTHER TOP 25 PROGRAM WITH DISJOINTED PERFORMANCES AT QB, SPECIAL TEAMS AND OFFENSIVE PLAY CALLING. THE SEC OPPONENTS UGA HAS WON AGAINST ARE A COMBINED 3-19 IN THE CONFERENCE. IF UGA HAD REALLY IMPROVED WE WOULD HAVE WITNESSED A MUCH MORE DOMINATE WIN OVER MALIGNED FLORIDA.
CAN ANYONE OF YOU KOOL-AID FILLED TEAPOT NUTS OUT THERE TELL ME WHY RICHT CAN ONLY WIN AGAINST OPPONENTS MORE MEDIOCRE THAN HIS OWN MEDIOCRE COACHED, BUT TALENTED TEAM. THIS TEAM BARELY CAN WIN AGAINST BOTTOM-FEEDERS AND BAMA AND LSU BOTH CRUSH THE SAME TEAMS THE NEXT WEEK. YES UGA WON TODAY BUT THEY DID JUST ENOUGH BARELY TO GET BY AGAINST ANOTHER PITIFUL SEC EAST TEAM. THAT WAS NOT THE FLORIDA THAT ALL UGA FANS LOVE TO HATE. SO I DON’T SEE WHAT ALL THE HOOPLA IS ABOUT. UGA WAS SUPPOSED TO DOMINATE HAS-BEEN UF AND IT DIDN’T HAPPEN, SO I GUESS WE’LL HAVE TO SETTLE FOR ANOTHER SLOPPY WIN, RIGHT ?! NOT !!!
THE ONLY WAY UGA WINS ANOTHER NATIONAL TITLE THE WHOLE NATION WILL BE DOWN AND EVERYBODY IN THE BCS TOP 10 WILL HAVE 3 TO 4 LOSSES AND THE DAWGS WIN IT ALL WITH JUST 2 LOSSES !! LOL !! WE ARE STILL PATHETIC AND MEDIOCRE DESPITE A MEAGER WIN OVER 4-4 UF !!

Not very pretty, but a win non the less. Fla will get better, you can count on that. But I also think UGA will get better (maybe a lot better) and a lot sooner. As I said before, like all new coaching staffs, Fla’s wants to get “their own” type of players in house. We already have ours in house. This is a young bunch. Providing they are “coached up”, they can be special. Jarvis Jones is a beast. But don’t look for him to be around more than one more year (probably NFL bound). If Samuel is lost, then there cause for concern at RB. C. Thomas is certainly not the answer, and Malcom, well my feeling is that is a wasted scholarship at this point. Maybe the walk on Harton will step up. Loss of D.Lee certainly will hurt. I’ve said this many times before, “there is no such thing as too much depth” in the SEC. Reference the above (Dallas Lee, Richard Samuel, etc). Conley appears to have stepped up in Mitchell’s absence. And how about giving Bogatay a chance? He certainly couldn’t be any worse than Walsh is right now. Then again, maybe he could. I keep telling myself, that Murray is afflicted with the dreaded “sophmore jinx”. But lord knows he scares me. While I’m not entirely pleased with CMR, he does offer a “degree” of stability, such that it is. Recruit’s like that. They buy into the man, as well as the program. Remember, a new coach will want his own players in house (see Mush at Fla). We would then be plunged into the abyss once again for a year or more.
All in all, I’ll take the win. I’ll also hope that we can win out and SC stumbles. Even though we may get our a$$es handed to us at the dome, this would not be an all together bad thing, as it would give this young bunch a sense of wanting to get back there again for some redemption. And who knows, we might luck up and win. After all, even the blind squirrel finds the occasional nut…..

I hate to say it -but monger is right– even vern L said it on the telecast< they should invest in a special teams coach. I'd do it now. It could make a difference in the kind of bowl game the dawgs might get.. In other word He would pay for himself.

Crowell does not and has not impressed me at all. Murray sucks and is inconsistant, and what the hell happened to Blair Walsh ? I say start Samual at back and Run,Run,Run ! But no matter how sloppy a win over the Gators is a good win. On the up side I think our defense looked good most of the game. Way to go Dawgs !!!!

Congrats dawgs, that will keep Richt in Athens for a few more years….worst Florida team I’ve seen in 20 years and Georgia has to rally to beat that sorry bunch. Bottom line..Dawgs are bad, Florida is pitiful. SEC east could select an all star team and they couldn’t beat Bama or LSU.
