This will come as scant consolation to Georgia fans, but Florida folks were once like you. The Gators would arrive in Jacksonville fearing the worst, and they’d get it.

Here’s how completely this rivalry has turned: Vince Dooley, the best coach in Georgia history, worked against four different Gators coaches over a quarter-century and had a winning record against each; Mark Richt, the second-best coach in Georgia history, has worked against three different Florida coaches over the past decade and has a losing record against each.

From 1964 through 1989, Georgia beat Florida 18 times (and tied once) in 26 meetings. In the 21 games since, Florida has won 18 times. The Bulldogs can’t even rent the game they used to own. The series flipped when Dooley retired as coach after the 1988 season and Steve Spurrier took the Gators in 1990, but even after Spurrier left for the NFL after the 2001 season nothing much has changed.

Which isn’t to say what we’ve witnessed is unfamiliar. On the contrary, the feeling of dread that has descended on Georgia was once expressed rather poignantly by eminent Gators. The year was 1984. Florida arrived in Jacksonville with maybe its best team ever — although Charley Pell, its coach, had stepped down after three games amid an NCAA investigation — but no real confidence that it could beat Georgia.

Because Florida would always lose to Georgia. Bulldogs backers recall Belue-to-Scott as the greatest play in the history of collegiate football; Gators fans remember that the Florida defender with the best angle fell as Lindsay Scott turned upfield. Other Gators lowlights: Bill Stanfill rising from a sick bed to sack Spurrier, who would win the Heisman; Richard Appleby, a Bulldogs receiver, throwing an 80-yard touchdown pass off an end-around; Florida coach Doug Dickey failing on a gamble that became known as “fourth-and-dumb”; Georgia driving 99 yards behind John Lastinger to the touchdown that beat Florida 10-9.

That excruciating drive came in 1983 and was fresh on the minds of Gators this correspondent interviewed in November ‘84. Said Spurrier, then coach of the USFL’s Tampa Bay Bandits: “Twelve or so times we’ve played Georgia with the SEC on the line, and they were either better or tougher or luckier than we’ve been. Probably Georgia just expects to win big games more than Florida does.”

Said Ray Graves, the Gators’ coach from 1960 through 1969: “After all the strange plays Georgia has pulled off, with guys falling down and guys knocking each other down, there’s always a feeling that a team can start believing in a jinx. You keep losing and losing, and you say, ‘Ah, we’ll get you next year,’ and then the other side says, ‘Yeah, that’s what your grandpa said, too.’ ”

A Georgia fan born in early 1990 has reached adulthood knowing only three Bulldogs victories over Florida: In 1997 under Jim Donnan, when Robert Edwards ran wild; in 2004 under Richt, when Florida coach Ron Zook had already been rendered a lame duck, and again in 2007, the year Richt’s players danced in the end zone after their first touchdown.

Of Richt’s eight losses to the Gators, half have come when he appeared to have the more talented team. A true oddity: Richt has taken Georgia to the SEC championship game three times, but beat Florida in none of those seasons.

OK, who wins?

View Results

Loading ... Loading ...

Speaking 27 years ago, the former Gator Cris Collinsworth said: “Something would always happen to us to make us turn around and say, ‘Wait a minute – is there really a jinx?’ ”

Today Georgia will play as a favorite, having won its past five games. Florida, by way of contrast, has lost three in a row. But similar dynamics prevailed last year: Georgia had won three straight and Florida had lost three straight, and the Gators won in overtime.

Recent history in this series has driven this correspondent into a default position: I’ll believe Georgia can beat Florida only after I see Georgia beat Florida. Which, believe it or not, was a different correspondent’s position regarding a different team back in 1984.

Said Hubert Mizell, then of the St. Petersburg Times: “I’ve seen so many weird things happen in that [Georgia] game that if Florida led by 28 points going into the fourth quarter, I’d call it 50-50.”

For the record, Florida beat Georgia 27-0 in 1984, breaking a six-game losing streak against the Bulldogs. Was Gators domination finally at hand? Nope. Florida entered the 1985 game ranked No. 1 in the nation for the first time in its history. It lost to Georgia 24-3.

I believe Tim Worley was recently arrested in our fair city for DUI, failure to use a turn signal, failure to comply with the orders of a police officer and making threatening gestures to police officers (while on police cruiser dash cam).

Apparently, many of Coach Richt’s players still play homage to #38 with their own arrests.

Great blog MB! Incredible just how things have turned in the rivalry in 25 years. I tend to toe the line you do. I will believe we will be Florida when it actually happens and then only after confirming it with 3 sources. It is simply that hard to believe.

I attended the 1984 and 1985 games. The Gator fans tore down the goal posts in 84 and the Dawg fans returned the favor in 1985. Jacksonville police let the Gator fans run wild in 84, but in 85, they clobbered a number of Dawg fans with billy sticks. My buddy proudly wore a large black and blue goose egg on his forehead on the drive back to Athens courtesy of a Jacksonville officer. A cold Budweiser applied to a goose egg will bring the swelling down.

The 1984 game was my senior year at Georgia, and I was at the game. The 99 yard drive started after we intercepted the Gators at our one yard line. The big play in that drive was a 3rd down pass to our TE, Clarence Kay. After he was tackled, Florida linebacker Wilbur Marshall piled on with a late hit. Stupid play cost Florida the game, and the Dawgs went on to win. I know our boys can win this thing tomorrow, but I’m a nervous wreck right now. GATA Georgia!

I moved to Athens in 1984 and for the next 6 years I just assumed we would beat the Gators. I remember listening Munson as we beat them 24-3 and Kerwin Bell got his arse handed to him. Fast forward to present day – this is the only game that ALWAYS gives me that pessemistic, sinking feeling heading into it. Psychology is way bigger than some people give it credit for – and the Gators have all of it on their side. I’m hopeful for us this year, but that “dread” in my heart still lurks.

Spurrier is hated for being so honest and beating Georgia at Florida. When he asked the question, ,how can Georgia be so high in the national recruiting polls every year and not be that good. Bobby Ross ask the same question years later when his Tech team was favored over Georgia but never quiet took it to Georgia like Spurrier. Neither of of Georgia or the Spurrier Florida were classy winners, Georgia still even makes an ass of themselves beating the small potatoes like Vandy. But with Miami and FSU in the state, I always felt Florida had bigger fish to fry and were not as please with themselves if they couldn’t beat the teams in its state as Georgia was beating Florida.

I can’t think of a year where Georgia should win more than this year. Florida is about as weak as I have ever seen them. Georgia has that dream team recruiting class. Maybe the reports of this talent is fictional. Maybe hype sells newspapers and Georgia is nothing but hype. We will know in a few hours, but if they don’t win this game I can’t wait to hear what Spurrier has to say. Maybe he will be kind because he is already beating them with another under talented team.

The pure joy yall had beating Vandy was to me a team on the ropes looking for something to cheer about anywhere any how. And then this paper acting like you have done something beating the four weakest teams in the SEC and now playing a Florida team that is practically diseased and making it sound like your train is really moving. The only thing that amazing me more than the homer hype you get is who did you pay to get this schedule and who in the SEC has an easier schedule than Georgia? You don’t play anybody. The Georgia State Patrol will be out in force this weekend and not so many of the players (and now the coaches) should be worried about going to jail. I heard the Florida State Patrol is working with GSP to make the highways safe from drunk drivers. That is probably a good idea and they can keep their eyes open for stolen cars while they are at it. The players are going to be on a bus so I don’t think not having a valid drivers license is going to mean all that much for them. I heard Coach Grantham has hired a limo and he’s coming in like the godfather. That should strike some fear. That and the doughnuts.

Yeah, not having Shockley during the 2005 game is just an excuse for losing. It’s not an excuse, it’s a reason. We lost because we didn’t have our starting QB that day and our backup wasn’t very good. We were an SEC championship team with Shockley and an average team without him. JTIII did the best he could but we just couldn’t muster up enough offense to win that day.

Saying otherwise is just not accurate. Likewise, I believe that Florida would have won in 2007 had Tebow been healthy. He clearly had shoulder issues and it affected his play.

Perhaps having a former Georgia player as the UF coach is just the psychological shake-up that is needed to turn this thing around.

HT, you keep calling for Mark Richt to be fired. Who would you suggest to be the Head Coach? For whatever reason I do not believe that Smart coming in would improve the situation. Muschamp sure hasn’t helped FL, and he was supposed to be one of the HC in-waiting, to be considered, for GA.
My opinion is Bobo needs to be either fired outright, be demoted to QB Coach, or RIcht find a team somewhere that wants Bobo as a HC. I am not sure demoting Bobo to the QB coach is a real fix for the offense, because he sure hasn’t gotten Murray to the point that he can hit the fully open man, over 30 yards downfield. 30 yards, he is ok. Anything over that, you might as well forget it.
Richt has without a doubt been down for the last few years, but, I think the team would be better with Richt as the HC, and bring in a high profile OC.
Just curious HT.

Mark, It’s not a big mystery what’s going on in this series. Vince Dooley had the week off before playing Florida while Florida usually was playing Auburn. Steve Spurrier knew how big that was, so he got that flipped around in the early 90’s. Since then Florida has only 4 times played the week before the UGA game (all while UGA was under Richt) and lost two of them. That and the fact that Florida, like Miami and Florida St., was not a good football program until the 80’s.

Call it an excuse if you want, but Spurrier thought it was a big deal. I can also tell you Dooley wasn’t beating the Gators when they had the week off. Donnan’s win stands as the only one in decades against Florida when Florida had the week off.

Most of Richts losses are because UF used the week off to make adjustments. Florida comes out rested and firing, get a lead, and then hang on in the end. Last year was a perfect example of this.

This year both have the week off, so it’s different. But there is no mystery as to why this series turned around.

Mark, great minds think differently as an old wisdom says.

UGA’s defense was ranked in the 70’s before they played the 1-15 teams. So UGA defense is bad. We all know bad defense cannot stop Rainey and Demps.

Watch out for Rainey and Demps to slash up UGA defense and outscore UGA by 2 TD’s.

I’m a lifelong Georgia fan who grew up loving those 1980s Georgia-Florida classics. But the way the trend has gone the last 20 years or so, I am NEVER confident going into this game any more. Despite Georgia having the better team several years, the ‘Dogs just find ways to lose. I will repeat what Bradley said in this column: “I’ll believe Georgia can beat Florida only after I see Georgia beat Florida.”

I would love to predict a UGA victory, to say with confidence that Georgia has the better team, to list all the reasons that the Bulldogs will pick up a win… but my head has seen too many losses since 1990, so I predict Florida 28, Georgia 23. Sorry guys… I hope I’m wrong, but it’s hard to reverse a 20-year trend.

I wouldn’t mind seeing it go back to being about 50/50 with the winner going to Atlanta. That’s how it was with UF/UT in the 90’s and those were some great games to watch. The younger Gators don’t have much respect for the rivalry and I suspect the younger Dawgs are tired of hearing about the good ol’ days. Kinda crazy how streaky the past 40 years have been, isn’ it?

the difference mark is today florida and ga are on equal footing football recruiting wise. heck ga ranks 2 on rivals list over the past decade. florida was not known for it’s football until ss arrived. so when ga was winning, they were doing it against a lesser team most of the time. florida’s domination speaks for itself and is a much bigger deal today.

ARdawg

You know it would probably be a much more intense rivalry if there was no more than a 2-3 year swing either way. The last 60-70 years it’s decades of dominance by either team. I was around in the 70s-80s and remember Florida as the team we beat no matter what. My son, quite the opposite.

I don’t know, maybe it’s better this way. AU is a pretty intense rivalry but with a lot of respect and it swings every year or so but it doesn’t measure up to the FL game

Read a column in Gainesville FL paper. It made a good point about the current streak. One can pretty accurately infer that based on the state of this series you can assess the state of the program. For that reason, I’ve finally some to the conclusion, that if Richt doesn’t win this one and turn the tide, he has to be let go. Spurrier changed things with passion – it wasn’t the spread offense. We haven’t had passion since ‘83. Yes Dooley’s final years didn’t have much passion. Bring in someone who loves the Dawgs and has the fire.

Not going to say anything ground breaking here, just add a comment.

This is the key game UGA coaches, players and fans are needing more than any other game in a few years. The loss to USC placed doubt in the minds of pollsters, fans and media types and after a 5 game turn around these Bulldawgs have won games at home and on the road. And folks winning on the road in the SEC is much tougher than most observers think it is. Winning on the road with a young team is even tougher.

UF has suffered through some injuries that have played a major factor in their season. In reality no one expected UF to beat Alabama or LSU, but without Brantley or Demps against Auburn we saw what a bewildered Florida team looked like.

Well folks, outside of the suspensions and the Mitchell injury this game is made for CBS College football saturday. Very close betting line, one coach wanting to solidfy his footing in holding on to his job and the other one needing that signature win in his first season to gain support of his fans. The injury ridden Gators have their strong armed QB back along with arguably the fastest man in college football.

This is going to be a good one. Hoping the weather does not play a major role in the game and that both teams play a clean game and keep us SEC FANS proud of our conference brothers.

I’m predicting a close one in this game. UGA has improved all season. UF gets Brantley back. During the fist half against Bama, Brantley and UF moved the ball very well. UF had 10 points and 190 yds of offense until Brantley was injured. They had virtually zero anything after that.

Good luck in the game, hope Richt wins a big one.

SEC Fact Finder, good points, but this would really be a “signature win” for a UF coach?

I mean, UF’s last 3 coaches all lost to UGA only once, each. Hell, Zook beat our best team of the last decade (’02). Zook!

When I look at the coaches who have beaten Richt in the past 2+ seasons, I think that for a UF coach to beat UGA is not much of an accomplishment . . .

The history of this series from the very beginning has been one of streaks by both schools. The tide will turn again and Georgia will start dominating the Gators again. IMHO Coach Richt should be 7-3 against the Gators but has been too uptight going into this game so his teams have played tight in 9 out of the 10 games the exception being the 2007 game. If this team comes out and just plays and has fun they will beat this Florida team quite handily. All depends on Coach Bobo not calling the plays or going away from things that are working like he usually or most of the time does.

Joey,

I see your point Sir. However with the crazy departure of Coach Meyer from UF and the quick hire of Muschamp, many still have doubts about the hire and want him to win one of these rival games. If he does not beat UGA he will need to beat USC and or FSU. Losing to all three will make it hard for many UF faithful.

Umm you’re not exactly a “genius” yourself. you think b/c Patterson or anybody else turned down Michigan they would automatically turn down UGA? Wake up dude. At UGA you can recruit top 10 talent(notice i said talent, you then have to develop it which CMR has no clue how to do) just by getting the majoity of players in your own state. Michigan is much like Tennessee, great tradition but you have to get the majoity of your players from out of state. When Patterson was offered Mich., Tressel had Ohio locked down. Desmond Howard, Charles Woodson, etc. all Ohio guys. Just like UT won a NC in 98 with Lewis, Coleman, Deon Grant, all Ga. guys recuited when Goof was HC.

@Top Dawg – “Whick isn’t to say waht we’ve witnessed is unfamiliar.”

The way I understood that quote was that we have been witnessing a UF domination over the last 21 years but prior to that UGA was dominant in the Vince Dooley era albeit to a slightly lesser degree than the last 21 years and that the trend of one team being dominant is not an unfamiliar sight in this series to either team. Just my take though.

HT, if I could narrow that list to 3, I would choose from Patterson, Peterson and Jones. Peterson is probably the better planner of the 3. Cantondawg’s point would be valid if we were talking about Pro ball, but that same argument would disqualify Saban and Spurrier, who were failures in the pros, but good in college. Smart just doesn’t impress me to be what GA needs in a head coach. Not sure what it is.

I remember the years when we dominated the Gators. One year we won 50 to some ridiculously low number. In fact as good as Spurrier was as a quarterback, and he was very good, we still owned him. So in any series there will be peaks and valleys, we’ve been in a valley for a long, long time now. Makes you wonder when we will get out. I don’t begrudged the Gators, they waited a long time, too, they’ve put together a long string of success. BUT NOTHING, IN THIS WORLD THAT IS, LASTS FOREVER.

I’ve attended the Ga-Fla games since the late 60’s. I remember owning them as well. From the days of John Reaves/Carlos Alverez to Galen Halls swan song (1989). My point is that this is and has been a “cyclable” thing. This may very well be the beginning of a new cycle (at least let us hope so). My feeling is it will take “Musch” a while to get “his” type of players into position in order to make his “scheme” workable. It’s my understanding he has already show the door to several players who did not buy into his ideology. Let’s hope (and pray) that we can feast on this transitional period and build a foundation for owning them again for a long, long while. But remember, this is a cyclable situation, and at some point it can start going the other way.

Unless you are Tech, and then you have absolutely no f’@#*ing hope of it ever getting any better. In fact it must be awful to realize that this is as good as it gets. That you’ve peaked/maxed out. That there is that very real possiblity, that it can actually get worse than that odd win every decade.

And so it goes………..

The athletic history of UGA is full of so many sordid, sleazy incidents – dating back to Vince Dooley and continuing through Mark Richt – that it’s impossible to overlook. The school has come to stand for drunkenness and lawlessness, coddling of illiterate athletes who should never have been admitted to college, and rampant cheating by coaches.

UGA and Mark Richt are an affront and an embarrassment to all decent people in this state.

The majority of the young players and the future for UGA right now, have not got this series in their head. They are looking to establish their own legacy and record, and along with their superior athletic skills, that makes them a very dangerous team.
The only people who have Florida’s curse in their heads are the coaches at UGA, except for the DC, who knows how to coach his players to kick some butt. If Bobo doesn’t do his usual conservative play calling and game planning for this game, there is no reason that UGA should not come away with a win. The players will play to win,so let’s see if he coaches to win. I am personally not worried about Florida’s Qb, and I believe that UGA’s defense will minimize their two fast RB’s effectiveness. Do that and 80% of Florida’s offense is defeated. The UGA DL should give the FL. OL fits all day long, and Brantley is no threat to take off and get 25 yards on a scamper. He will also be playing with a sore ankle, because a high ankle sprain, doesn’t heal quickly. The pain lessens, but once you put a lot of strain on it, it tends to tighten up, and with the UGA DL, in pursuit of him all day, he will put some strain on it.
IF UGA plays a wide open game, runs the ball in the proper plays, and doesn’t put Murray in bad positions, UGA wins. We will miss Mitchell, but we do have other receivers that can do the job. I would hope Bobo would do something out of character like use the FB a little more to tote the ball, and maybe even have a trick play or two up his sleeve to try. Of course, I am talking about Bobo and anything like that would be considered a radical change for him.
I just want to see the coaches let these kids play today, and give them a chance to play. If they do that, UGA can win easily. If Bobo is his usual self, the players will have to try and win, in spite of him and hope the defense can create some points and turn overs. We seem to rack up a lot of yardage but not a lot of points. The red zone usually turns out to be the poison zone for us. The players still execute what play is called for them, but perhaps, the plays called, are not the ones designed to get 7, just designed to insure we can get at least a shot at a field goal and protect the ball. We need to be more aggressive in the red zone, and utilize the strengths we have there. I seem to remember some talk earlier this year of letting Jenkins run the ball in close down situations but that would appear to be a no go, with Geathers, out for half a game. We have a 270 LB. fullback, that should be able to move some folks out of the way with the ball in his hands. Let’s hope that Bobo tries to utilize his players fully today and get all the weapons involved in the game.

UGA’s dominance ended when we went to more of a passing philosophy. It started with Eric Zeier. Spurrier comes in the runs the spread and throws the ball all over the field. Well that is when we thought we had to do the same thing. We abandon the Tailback U. philosophy and paid for it. UGA football was running the football, controlling the clock and give the defense a chance. When Ga. runs the football we win. Donnan beat them because of Robert Edwards. Richt beat them because of Moreno even though I was not a big Moreno fan. Get back to running the football and UGA will dominate again. Why do you think Ala. is winning consistently?

If Georgia doesn’t play like Georgia today, then they have a chance.

If they can keep their mouths shut and focus on their own responsibilities…
If they can show discipline and avoid stupid penalties and turnovers…
If they can give maximum effort on every play for a full 60 minutes…

Ah, who am I kidding? Probably best to just start making up excuses now, so I’ll have them ready when the final seconds tick off the clock in this inevitable beat-down by the Gators.

Florida played dirty and the Zebra’s handed them the game on a silver platter. It’s an SEC conspiracy! Yeah… That’s the ticket!

Defense wins games. It was very true last night.
Florida’s second half offensive production. 1 first down and 32 total yards. I’ll take UGA’s sometimes over enthusiastic DC over anybodies right now.
By the way, I charted every one of Georgia 89 offensive plays last night and the ratio of runs to passes was about 60/40 in favor of the pass. I don’t think UGA’s problems have been the pass. I believe UGA’s problems have been conservative play calling and game plan. If UGA opens it up, they seem to do OK, even with as young a team as they have. Play 4 quarters like they did last night and they can cause teams problems. I am left to wonder how much better and more we would have scored, had our young WR, Mitchell, been in the game. Still, the other receivers filled in very well.
I also do not recall too many times when UGA recorded six sacks with four of them coming from one linebacker. J.J. is the real deal. UGA won the coaching battle, defensive battle, offensive battle and lost the special teams battle by a lot. Fix that area or at least improve on it, and UGA can give any team, a tussle. It was UGA’s time last night and they made the best of it. There is no way to know, if the curse is broken yet or not, but I have to think with these youngsters learning and playing better each week, Jacksonville, for the next few years will not be business as usual for the Gators.
