Yes, here's that picture of John Brantley again. No, I couldn't find a better one. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
The Vegas folks waited a while before posting a line on Georgia-Florida because they wanted to see if Florida quarterback John Brantley is apt to play. On Monday, the Gators classified Brantley as “probable.” And Georgia has been made a three-point favorite.
Which makes you wonder: If Brantley had been listed as “doubtful” or even “questionable,” would Georgia be a seven-point favorite?
There’s no doubt Brantley makes some difference for the Gators. Florida was 4-0 and had taken an early lead on Alabama — which admittedly didn’t last long — the night he suffered his “lower leg” injury. They’ve scored a total of 17 points in two games since.
Brantley has been better under Charlie Weis than he was last season. Had he thrown enough passes to qualify, he’d be second in the SEC in passer-efficiency rating behind Jarrett Lee of LSU. (Brantley’s at 152.6; Georgia’s Aaron Murray is at 150.3.) But I don’t know that Brantley is a Tebow or a Wuerffel or even a Kerwin Bell or a Rex Grossman. He’s a good college quarterback. His presence will give Florida a fighting chance. That said …
Alec Ogletree will return at linebacker for Georgia. That’s a pretty big deal in itself.
Oh, and if you care to chart an intriguing bit of line movement, watch what’s happening with Georgia Tech and Clemson. The Tigers opened as a 4 1/2-point road favorite. They’re now favored by 3 1/2 points, which means: Some speculators out there like the Jackets’ chances.

Florida’s got talent, but they don’t seem to be gelling as a team, especially on offense.
I don’t think that changes this week, and Georgia wins by 10-17.
To alter the old baseball phrase, good defense beats good offense every single time, and Georgia’s got a pretty dang good defense.

As for Tech, I think it’s close through three quarters, but Clemson pulls away in the fourth and wins by 7.

Hopefully, Grantham will send Jones and Ogletree early and often after Brantley. We need to take a page out of the old FSU playbook against fl, and hit really hard the first two series and not let up.
How does Murray have a qb rating of 150? Did they throw out the USC game like a teacher throws out your lowest test score? Crowell needs to step up and play big to take the pressure off of Murray.
If I were a betting man(which I’m not), I would think the Clemson game would be the best bet. Of course all the Techies will think fl is a good bet.

I would “speculate” that the Tech-Clemson line movement means the “sharps” (aka, the smart money) are putting their money on the Tigers. Often the line will move in small increments like that if they’re getting money heavily on one side. They always want to get even betting on both sides…that’s why and how the house always wins.

If Brantley plays, Dawgs lose. If he doesn’t, Dawgs win. Having Brantley gives an emotional boost to the entire team. It gives the whole team a reason to believe they can win. Now, if he’s out there on basically one leg, that could really cause Florida problems as he will be a sitting duck for Washington, Jones, and O’tree.

Dawgs win…I don’t get this gut feeling often. It’s been the opposite most of the time.
Having a fresh Geathers in the 2nd half will help a ton. Ogletree back is big. UF’s O-line just not very good right now. UGA’s D will handle.
I feel like Crowell is gonna have a field day. UF’s D-line just isn’t what it used to be. Omar Hunter is about all they have.

The Offensive line is the key to winning. We can’t have the missed assignments on the line that we had against Vandy. There were too many unblocked defenders rushing Murray. They were also in our backfield disrupting the handoff and timing. Given time and adequate blocking, Murray will do his job and the running backs will do their job. The defense is solid. The Gators have speed in the backfield but we have as much speed at linebacker as any team in America. We can run down the Gator backs from sideline to sideline. Our secondary is as talented as any team in the league. If we can hurry Brantley, we can get some picks. If they start either of their other two QBs, this won’t even be a fair fight. Our special teams just need to be aware of the situation and stay disciplined and they will do okay. Go Dawgs!!!See you JAX!!!!

Thankfully, I don’t think Mitchell is that big of a loss. Sure, we are a better team with him than without him, but it’s not like we don’t have other high quality receivers on our team. Mitchell is real good, but it’s not like losing an AJ Green (at least not yet). I think a healthy Crowell and a healthy Murray are more important to our chances than Mitchell.
If Brantley plays, it comes down to turnovers. We need to win the turnover battle.

I keep hearing how great our defense is but the Vandy game to me says otherwise. They hadn’t scored a TD in two games prior to playing UGA and they moved the ball pretty well in that game. Both the MISS schools offenses are atrocious and TENN lost their best offensive weapon prior to us playing them. I think our defense is evolving toward being a good defense but we are certainly not there yet. I think this will be a very close game and could be decided by special teams which scare the hell out of me considering how that is our area of weakness. Those calling for a 10 or even 17 point win over UF are being overly optomistic in my opinion. This game is gonna be a nail biter.

No way Richt is sandbagging. Mitchell is a true freshman and still needs reps to get better. Now, he may still play and that he’s trying to give the hammie as much time as possible to heal. I think you hold him out unless you are sure he’s not going to re-injure it. He won’t be needed next week, so that’s another week to let it heal. Then he will be back at full strength for the Auburn game.

Herschel . . . I respect Boise and Chris Petersen, but wait until he has to play 8 competitive teams every year before elevating him to the great coach status. Boise has enough talent to beat anybody in one game with three weeks to prepare. How do you think they would fare in this year’s SEC east? Think they run the table? I have less of a problem with Richt than I do with the play calling. Too many 15 yard passes on 3rd and 4. Too much Carlton Thomas on dives. Not enough draws and no screens since SC game. Ultimately it’s on Richt as head coach but I would change OC before I lose my job as HC.

To somewhat clarify my belief in a convincing UGA victory Saturday, let me say that this team reminds me a lot of the ‘07 squad. We have a team with a very good QB and RB that lost two games early and had a nail-biter with Vandy before getting an off-week before UF.
We all know what the ‘07 team did, and I think the ‘11 team will do just as much, if not more (SEC Championship Game).
I don’t think we’ll go to the Sugar Bowl because ‘07 overall was just too bonkers. I mean, the three best teams in the nation at the end of the year (LSU, UGA and Southern Cal) all had 2 losses? Crazy, man.

The Dawgs on paper should be favored by a couple points – if we were to ignore that it is Florida they are playing. Frankly, I’d make UF about 10 point favorites as a default starting point each year and then assess the teams from there. In that scenario, UGA would be 7 point underdogs.

I don’t know, man. This team isn’t awful but it has some real flaws. You talked about defense earlier in the thread- you’re still giving up over 100 yards on the ground and over 20 points per game. I think Richt had it right- UGA is probably the favorite in the East because of some scheduling luck, not the quality of the team. Only team in the SEC to miss all three of Bama, LSU, and Arky.

I’ve learned from the past that I can never be overly confident about Georgia beating Florida; The mental mistakes we make most years are too obvious to ignore. But with that being said, I think we’ll win this one, 27-20. For the first time in years, I can say that I’m confident in our defense. If our offense struggles early, we will still be in the game, because our defense will keep us in it. Now, if the D plays bad and we get in a 14-0 hole, I don’t see any chance in coming back, but that shouldn’t happen.
Three big differences for the game this year:
1. Georgia’s defense is good.
2. Georgia has balance on offense, so Murray won’t have to carry us like last year.
3. Urban Meyer isn’t coaching for Florida, so Georgia isn’t in as big of a coaching disadvantage.

First, Georgia wouldn’t cover against Coastal Nebraska if they were favored by 2, so throw out the ‘line’, and I don’t care if we win 3-2 as long as we win for a change. We’ve had the better team several times over the last ten-fifteen years, and always find a way to lose, just as the ‘gator’ did during Dooley’s tenure.
Second, I have been impressed with our defense. A breath of fresh air after the ‘06-’09 defenses. I am curious to see how we do against the ‘gator’. Admittedly, we have looked good against extremely poor teams. Vandys success against us kinda scares me a bit.
Bottom line…if we win the trench battle, O and D, we’ll win. If we don’t, we’ll lose. Same as it ever was.

Gatortime, that isn’t the case in the tech vs Clemson , most of the money (88%)is being bet on Clemson but the line is moving down, reverse line movement, Could have something to do with Ellington being dinged up or ? Clemson playing poorly on the road.

I’m sure these things will happen…
1)Richt will mismanage the clock and waste timeouts as usual
2)Walsh will miss 2 important field goals that will be the difference in the game
3)Florida will have several trick plays that work (fake punt, fake spike,on-sides kick,etc.). They always work against UGA.
4)Richt will look like my grandma on the sideline with no fire at all.
5)Muschamp will be the only Dawg that wins Saturday…

As big of a UGA fan as I am, UGA should not be favored to win. I’d even go as far to say until UGA wins two in a row against Florida that the words “favored” and “Georgia” should never be seen together with regards to this game. If the Dawgs don’t stumble over themselves, they’ll have a great chance of winning.

With Brantley back it gives FL the stability and playing experience at QB position. Makes Weises job a lot easier at calling plays he’s comfortable calling. It definitely gives them the scoring power they have missed while he was out. Probably lifts the rest of the teams spirits as well. Their speed on both sides of the ball, especially at RB, worries a lot of us considering the dawgs have problems stopping good running nteams. This will be a huge challenge to TG and the dawgs D. One thing for sure, they have to be able to pressure Brantley w/down linemen when he drops back to pass. The LB’s will be needed to cover any screens to FL’s speed demons.
I don’t care what FL’s record is they’re still FL and GA has been prone to playing only half a game before they seemingly find ways to allow their opposition back in the game and keep it close. Against a talented FL team this trend could spell disaster for the dawgs. I have no clue who is going to win but just hope its the dawgs.

Chris Peterson will be the next HC at UGA at some point. It’s a done deal pretty much. His buyout is a paltry $650k and he is only making $1million/yr. UGA is going to offer him $4,000,000.
I said a few months ago that the only chance Boise had was to get into a conference that had a automatic BCS qualifier. And wouldn’t you know it…Boise is now trying to get into the Big East. I still don’t think it’s enough to keep Peterson however and I think he will start in 2013 personally.

To the poster that said Florida’s only DL is Omar Hunter.
Well….Omar Hunter does not start on Florida’s DL these days. Let me introduce you to Dominque Easley (who will be all SEC this year, probably second or third team) and Jaye Howard….who do start for Florida. Both will be playing on Sundays and starting. But Shariff Floyd and Ronald Powell have not lived up to their 5-star hype…and Ronald Powell has probably lost his starting postion to Larentree McCray who played very well against Auburn. The secondary is very young, but is getter better every week. Bostic and Jenkins are good LBs…and the entire defense is very, very fast. Florida will be a very different team if Brantley is 100 percent and the OL plays better. It is those two things that will determine the outcome of this game. But….I would agree that Georgia should be favored at the start of this game. Just too many unanswered questions for the Gators. But I would not bet against the Gators in this game.

I thought Bobo had Smart talked into it. So did Bobo if you want to know the truth. However CMR scared him off when he said he wasn’t going to make any changes to the S&C program. Then a year later McGarity makes him do it or there still wouldn’t be any changes.
But in honesty I missed that one however it was due to CMR and not a lack of info on my part. He would have signed the deal that day if CMR had agreed to bring the S&C program up to par. My bad.

Insider that is not exactly correct. CMR’s relationship with Damon Evans became strained because Richt wanted more money for additional S&C coaches but DE wanted to distribute revenues to win championships in different sports. Commendable to a degree but…
One of the very first things CMR discussed with McGarity was this problem and it’s need for correction. CMR had pressed for this for at least 2-3 years but got nowhere with Evans.

Driskoll worries me a little because of his running ability and strong arm. This kid is going to be special in years to come. I really dont care who plays Q.B for the Gators on Sat as long as we get pressure on him.We must stop Demps and Rainey from running the corners. If we do that we should be ok.Take away the running game.

It shouldn’t matter who starts at at QB for Floirda, UGA SHOULD win this game easily. The other QBs on their roster have proven they aren’t ready and Brantley has been out a while and should be rusty. If Florida wins this game you can chalk it up to yet another between the ears loss (or outcoached which is very possible) . An injury to Murray or Crowelll is the only other excuse for losing this game.

CMR and Evans did not have a good relationship near the end. Evans was cheap regarding the football program and I think did not support CMR enough. Remember when CMR used to fuss about not having an indoor practice facility? Those comments were directed for DE. Also, DE would have never paid an assistant $750k/yr. I imagine if it weren’t for red panties Martinez would still be there coaching for $350k. All of our assistants were grossly underpaid as to other SEC assistants. DE was a cheapskate.

A high ankle sprain is easy to walk and jog in without noticeable pain. However, when you sprint or make quick movements can cause pain and relapse into sprain. If Brantley couldn’t play 10 days ago I don’t see how it can be much better. The first time he has to avoid sacks he will feel it for sure.

I’ll give you dogs this years game..you should win, and probably will win, but don’t start that crap about how much better you are and all that other BS…if you win this year remember it will only be your 4th win in the last 21 years, and next year will be a whole different story. I personally think the Gators have a better chance without Brantley…he’s never impressed me and he’s always been soft…that coming from a life long Gator

All I know is Fla was rolling pretty strong (#12th in the nation I think?) before the Bama game. Now they get their QB back, just don’t think it’ll be a cake walk as you implied in your earlier post. But I have faith we can get the job done! Just have to tighten up on special teams, which JUST about cost us the game in Nashville and did cost us the game against SC.

“It is funny to see how many of you don’t know the first damn thing about football! UGA is much more tallented that UF. If the game is coached right, UGA wins it easily. Geez, some of you need to find a band or cheerleading vent. With Brantley healthy, UF scores no more than 13 on the Dawgs D. Without him, could very well be a shutout. If we get away from that conservative bullcrap, we score 31.”
A shut out? Mr. Football knowitall doesn’t seem to realize that the SEC teams UGA has played have a combined record of 1-15 in conference play. Anyone playing those teams will look good. UF has played 3 teams better than anyone UGA has faced so far. Two of which, are destroying everyone they play.
Good luck, Dawgs. The Gators haven’t fed in 3 games, and they’re hungry.

Should UGA find a way to win this game, instead of finding a way to lose it as is usually the case, I think this may finally be the time when we reverse our fortunes in J’ville. I long for a return to the time when we owned Fla. A time when a win for Fla was an abberition instead of the norm. It can happen folks. I have said many times, that sports are cyclable. I said when Urban first got there he would do good for a few years like he did at his other two schools but if he stayed long enough and had a downturn he would bail. If Richt had quit after 4 years he would have been viewed as a genius. If you stay anywhere long enough you will go through cycles. Period. @ tell me again – sorry to ruin your conspiracy theory, but most of the transfers are the result of the coaching change and the resulting change in offensive and defensive philosophies (other than Janoris Jenkins, who was shown the door). Win Saturday and things look pretty good for Coach Richt. I am hoping that they have been sandbagging the offensive production the past few games. We scored well against South Carolina who has a decent D. Maybe Mitchell is better and maybe we Boo running the ball.
Columbus Dawg, don’t worry about Rainey, those things have a way of working themselves out. He will get what he deserves sooner or later. The problem I have is that programs like LSU and OSU and all these “top” ranked programs and genius coaches keep bring back kids to the team that are getting arrested for dope and crap and nobody says a damn thing. Richt kicks a kid off the team for discipline problems or encourages bad behavior kids to transfer out and people rip him for it. IF we have to keep the bad apples playing to win then I do not want to win that way. I hope Richt gets the W Saturday and rolls over Auburn (always a tough game and can go either way).

Weis is installing a pro offense with spread option personnel. It’s going to be an akward fit until Muschamp’s recruits are in place. But with the benefit of a bye week after working with these player through seven games, I’ll be interested to see what Weis does. It is the inverse of 2005, when Meyer’s offense struggled using pro style guys to run his spread option (Leak was as bad of a fit as Brantley was last year). But with a week off to reassess his personnel, Meyer tweaked the offense to be effective enough to win.

I’m curious to know what the odds makers see in the Tech – Clemson game. Tech’s offense has progressively gotten worse as Washington looks more like Nesbit throwing a cinder block. The defense is showing some improvement, but I don’t see Tech being within 21 points of Clemson. I hope I’m wrong, but if I were a betting man this weekend, my money would be on Georgia to win and Tech to lose. Prove me wrong Jackets!

Pretty much my thoughts also GTfan11. BUT, Caesar’s palace has been reporting that the line is dropping because the “sharps” are putting their money on Tech. Apparently either they know something I don’t, or they are counting on the fact that records rarely matter in this rivalry and they see that if Washington can just complete an ocassional pass Clemson may be in for more than they bargained for. Plus everyone is counting on the traditional “Clemson Collapse” which seems to always happen at some point. But back to my reason for coming here to start with….
Good luck to UGA tomorrow! Ya’ll should stomp the gators the way your defense has been improving lately. I have a feeling Crowell is going to have a VERY good afternoon too!!! Here’s to both UGA and GT winning out ….Until November 26th that is!!!!!!!!

We aren’t going to win this game. Our coach stinks. We’re going to lose to Florida, then to Auburn, and then to Tech. Recruiting will fall off. The Jackets will become the state’s dominant program. The SEC East will smother us, and we’ll become just another sucky team in an ocean of sucky teams. I’m already depressed.
