Live from Miami: Is Georgia Tech about to pack it in or what?

Miami's Lamar Miller against Tech last season. You'll hear his name again today. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)

Miami – Two schools of thought on this one. One is that the schedule is about to catch up with Georgia Tech and that the Jackets will do well to win two more games. (Duke being the gimme, and even that’s in Durham.) The glass-half-full outlook is to proclaim Tech’s loss at Virginia a raging blip that augurs nothing much at all.

I’m kind of split. I do think the schedule is toughening. (Don’t think anybody would disagree.) I don’t, however, think Tech is incapable of finishing strong and winning the ACC Coastal. I think Tech will beat Miami today, which would make the Jackets 7-1 and would render the next two games — both at Bobby Dodd Stadium — hugely huge.

I say this largely because I can’t tell what sort of team Miami is. Here’s its season: Lose to Maryland, beat Ohio State, lose to Kansas State, beat (but get outgained by) Bethune-Cookman, lose close at Virginia Tech, win at North Carolina. See a pattern therein? Me, neither.

Miami folks insist the ‘Canes are about to embark on a run that could leave them atop the Coastal Division, and I do think Al Golden is a good enough coach to make that happen — someday. Just not yet. I’m still not sure Miami can coalesce around a new coach with all that has happened around the program. (I refer to Nevin Shapiro’s allegations of pay-for-play, among other things.)

The Jackets, on the other hand, are stable enough to learn from their Virginia experience and ensure that it won’t happen again. I say this with great confidence — as of 1:37 p.m., roughly two hours before kickoff. By 4 o’clock, I may have been offered reason to rethink.

But that’s why they play the game, as we genius sports writers like to say, and that’s why I”ll be here until the game is done. I implore you to join the festivities, and I thank you in advance.

Since no one at the AJC is ever interested in providing a real critical analysis of the primadonnas on North Avenue, it occurred to me that Georgia Tech has struggled in the second half of the season under Paul Johnson. The numbers confirm this.

First 6 games of season: Tech is a respectable 14-4.

2nd half of season (including postseason play): Tech is a very mediocre 12-10.

Of course there are many factors that go in to this: You’re usual creampuff OOC scheduling, you’re usual lack of depth, you’re usual losses to UGA, and, dare I say it, more film on Johnson’s offense. It doesn’t look good for the rest of 2011 Techies. Sorry.

Thanks.

You consider comparing records early in the season and records later to be real critical analysis? I’m fairly certain that most teams in the country have a better record early in the season. Any child with a brain can figure out why.

It all depends on Tevin Washington. If he stays calm and gets the ball into the hands of the playmakers at A-back and WR Tech will win. If he stays in Reggie Ball mode like the last two weeks in which he thought he could win the game without his teammates, Tech will lose. If he chooses the latter I think it’s time to switch QB’s.

@GTBob: I wanna say that I do like you as tech poster and I do agree that dawgfan was a little less than “critical” with his analysis…but you’re assumption that teams “generally have better second halves than first halves” is a little foolish for numbers people like techies. You should know that the portion that have poor second halves are the same number as those that have bettersecond halves of the season. College football is a zero-sum game, meaning that no one wins unless someone loses, and every game has a winner and loser. So there are exactly as many losers as there are winners. And that info came from what y’all techies believe to be a second rate education at UGA;)

What does this tell me? Neither team has beaten anyone any good and both still have a lot to prove.
What do each team’s losses tell me? Georgia has played a more difficult schedule as Boise St and USC > Virginia…

Nate the Great, I was speaking of BCS teams, not all College Football teams. Obviously if you consider every team in the country they they have an even record over any time span. However, BCS teams tend to schedule their OOC games early in the season, which usually includes 1-2 games that are automatic wins. Later in the season there are rivalry games, bowl games, and conference championship games. Its not exactly an even comparison. Some teams have a weaker schedule as the season goes on, like UGA this year, but its usually not the norm.

Tech should bounce back against Miami. They should have more focus after the last game. I will be surprised that they don’t play well. If they don’t, it will be a frustrating rest of the year. They need to find it because Clemson looks good right now.

Am I supposed to just take your word for that GT Bob. You are a Tech fan. If you’re lips are moving you’re probably lying.

By the way, I conceded that your usual creampuff OOC early in the season plays a part in those numbers. How in the world that detracts from my point I have no idea. You lose more games in the second half of the season than you do in the first half under Paul Johnson. That is a FACT Techie. No amount of Techie spinning and rationalizing can change it.

For those thinking of is it time to burn the redshirt on Vad Lee. Take a look at Taj Boyd, he is RS sophmore and played behind Kyle Parker last year. I am comfortable with Tevin and Synjyn. Let’s allow Vad to physically mature and be ready to go.

You can not honestly be comfortable with Tevin Washington after the last two games. We are looking at Reggie Ball Jr. out there. If Days can perform then I’d love to leave the redshirt on Lee. I just haven’t seen enough of Days to have a valid opinion on him, but I do believe I’ve seen too much of Washington. He just doesn’t have it.

I’m not saying I want Washington out. I want very badly for him to play at a higher level. The problem is that I have seen him hesitate to pitch the ball and throw awful interceptions on too regular of a basis. I think that we will find out today if he is capable of playing big boy football or if we have already seen the best he has to offer. Unless Washington improves I believe that Johnson will have to play a different quarterback if he wants to beat Clemson, VaTech, and UGA. Washington’s most impressive win in 10 starts is either a 7 point win at home vs UNC, or a 10 point win on the road at NC State. He has losses to a 5-6 UGA team, Air Force, and UVA.

I didnt say they struggle the 2nd half of the season, they just play better competition. Are you really arguing that competition stays even throughout the year for most teams? If you want some proof:

Richt (Overall): 77% wins in first 6 games, 71% after that
Richt (first 3 years): 89% first 6 games, 73% after that

Does Richt have issues in the 2nd half of the season also?

No way we burn Lee’s redshirt, I don’t think he was even at the game last week in Charlottesville (didn’t see him on the sideline and I was there.) Lee will be an outstanding QB – every espn 150 player to come to tech is now doing well in the NFL, unlike the Dawgs we don’t waste out talent (sorry had to.)

Corso said our passing attack gives us the edge, anyone think Tevin can get out of his slump?

Ol'JacketFan

October 22nd, 2011
3:23 pm

Dirtybirds, not a lot to argue there. I will just say the timing in this offense is critical to its sucess. If Vad Lee is the talent we all seem to think he his I just want him to know the offense and to be physically ready to go. I do think today could tell Tech fans a lot about what Tevin is capable of. Going into this season the “experts” stated Tech would be lucky to win 6-7 games, I would like to think Tech will win 8-9 and with a break or two could exceed that.

Fair enough. I ignored the experts and assumed we were looking at 8-9 wins going in. The schedule this year is too soft for Tech to be a 6-7 win team. Now I’m hoping for 11. A loss vs Clemson next week wouldn’t ruin the season assuming Tech beats Miami, VaTech, and of course Duke. In that case we would have another Tech-Clemson ACC Championship. A win over UGA is always a goal. I think that a wasted redshirt year for Lee is worth a chance for a conference championship and a win over UGA. Again, assuming Washington doesn’t improve and Vad Lee gives Tech the best chance to win. If he isn’t ready, he sits.

Regardless of what he says, CPJ HAS passed more this year as oppossed to previous years. There have been more wide open receivers this year as well. A-backs have been wide open on most passing plays, as seen on the interception pass. This offense will not truly be dynamic against good competition until Vad Lee takes over. I think its too early to throw him in this year, but I look for him to take over next year.

I’ve noticed in 3 and a half years of watching Paul Johnson’s offense at Tech, that this offense is much more dependent on execution than play calling. More so than any offense I’ve ever watched. Seems like regardless of the call, the play is either really successful, or unhinged by a missed read or block, or a poor throw or dropped pass or pitch. The option to be successful is there every play.

Well, this one was over early for the second week in a row. Miami is supposed to have a banged up D and we come out and pass with the worst passing QB in America. I thought Dabo was an idiot with all of the cute plays that he used to run but now CPJ has turned into what Dabo was in his first year. He tries too hard to be cute and shoots himself in the foot and is just too stubborn to ever learn. Groh knows that Miami is going to run all day but we aren’t prepared for that either. At least we should just be happy by having one more win than last year if we beat Duke.

Teams know how to stop it because CPJ doesn’t have a clue how to develop a QB. He hasn’t taught one how to throw a pass in four years. And he refuses to hire a special teams coach and said he would take it on himself this year. Special teams has gotten much worse with Johnson being more hands on. I think some of the players are getting tired of his attitude. They quit on him last year and people blamed it on Gailey’s guys. This is his recruits this year that aren’t learning or improving and are beginning to quit as well.

What a waste of an afternoon. I have never ever seen a team digress this much over the course of a season. Lack of execution, stupid, stupid, stupid plays. Finally score, and what does this bonehead coach do? Tell a so-so kicker to squib it, which was poorly done, end result the ball goes directly to their best returner in about a split second. No time for the coverage to get downfield.
As long as this guy is coach, a 3-0, 4-0, 6-0 start means nothing. His teams are not built well, and will ALWAYS have a fall-apart game, or two, or five. In this case, I see this team finishing 7-5 with a trip to one of the toilet bowls, after a 6-0 start. They will be LAUGHED out of the top 25 this week, as they should be. Disgusting. Mark — The smartest coach in CFB (as you continually tell us) never seems to have a team that knows how to play speacial teams or defense — how does that happen? Seems is though a coaching genius would recognize that there are 3 phases of football and you can’t just care about one of them.
CPJ = June Jones. The only difference is that one runs Mouse Davis’ Run-and-Shoot offense and the other other one runs Emory Bellard’s Triple-Option and that is all either care about. They will always have teams that can score against bad teams, win some games, but then get pants’d by real teams that play all 3 phases of the game.

From earlier this week:
Speaking on special teams more broadly, Johnson said the punt return team is doing fine. Zach Laskey is fourth in the ACC at 10.3 yards per return. The kickoff cover and punt cover teams are fine when the kicks are long enough. “The kickoff return team has been abysmal,” he said.

He noted that coaches visited with a couple NFL teams over the offseason to get ideas and worked on schemes, with little effect.

“We’ve just got to do a better job of coaching it, I guess,” he said.

First it was FSU, then VT, now Clemson. GT had 1 good year, but face it. GT is not a powerhouse..they strive to be just above average.
]
Just sit back and enjoy a good ol’ ball game full off mistakes, miscues, and avg players. Kind of like watching your kids play in middle school, you get upset when they lose, but then you go for pizza and everything is all right.

I guess my advice to Tech fans is relax, the U sux, GT is average. Should be a good second half. First exhibit…GT v UVA

SAME GAME, hopefully different result.

Georgia Tech’s defense played remarkably well for three quarters, but Daniel McKayhan, filling in for injured starter Jerrard Tarrant, fumbled twice on punt returns, and his second turnover led to an Air Force touchdown and the Falcons’ 14-7 lead. In addition to the two fumbles on punt returns, Georgia Tech quarterback Tevin Washington also lost the ball on the Falcons’ 7-yard line and ended an 18-play, 77-yard drive. His interception with less than a minute remaining ended any hope at a comeback.

Oh well – so much for being in the Top 25 – was nice while it lasted. I was a believer in CPJ – but now I really have my doubts – no special teams, no offense if Tevin isn’t working, defense very highly suspect – it’s looking bad in nearly all phases of the game – and seems to have gotten worse since the 3rd game of the season. Clemson,VT, maybe duke, and definitely UGA will beat us, So what started as a 6-0 season will end at least 7-5, could be 6-5. That is bad.

This is what happens when you play cupcake-city early in the season.

Nice job Coach Kung Fu Panda, we’re 4- yrs. in an we now have YOUR PLAYERS in the program and we still can’t pass vs. BCS-level Teams.

The S. Hill from the 1st 3 games is nowhere to be found now that he is playing vs. “real DBs” and “real opposition”.

This is just another example of the douche-bag GT fanbase getting what it deserves, earlier in the week they poke fun at another HC (RN from UCLA), and before the week is out we see that our Program ain’t going in the right direction either. I know they’re D-bags because I went to school with them and was “forced” to road-trip to other colleges like uga or Emory just to be arounf “normal college students”.

That made perfect sense then. But, now, if you are good, you can leave for the NFL as a junior. Let’s see, play college for free or go to the NFL and make millions. Which would you decide to do? Now, Vad Lee has burned a year. Next year we’ll have to contend with him making rookie mistakes when we should have bit the bullet with him this year. Undersized on the o-line, d-line, linebackers, no kicking game, sad special teams, horrible qb… won’t win another game this season (including duke). CPJ has his contract till end of ‘13, but won’t be renewed if we have another 6-7 or 7-6 season. Don’t expect him to be fired, we’re cash strapped right now, what with Hewitt’s buyout and ncaa fines.

How freakin pathetic ! I’ve been a GT fan my entire life, even through the bad years, and i’ve never seen a team just give up like these last two games. Any other time, Coach PJ would have fired up the troops at halftime and had them coming out ready to play the second half, but not today. We’re too good of a team to lose to Virginia, and in my opinion better than Miami. I can see a blowout the next two games unless something drastic happens soon. The first step in the right direction would be to hire a decent special teams coach. And before next season, recruit some talent for the defense. Our whole team is too undersized for the competition we play against. This was an entire team loss, from the special teams, to the quarterback, to the coaches.

It’s tough to get down on Tech, and I know I have. However, they are very young. In fact, they are the youngest team in the ACC, and they have played 8 straight weeks. When you are gassed and have very little quality depth, that’s an issue.

So, fellow GT fans, how do you feel about CPJ now? Seriously, take it in. Absorb it! This is what you’re going to get with this man. Can he coach? Sure, he can scheme with the best of them, but his ego is as bloated as his gut and his recruits are a reflection of his limitations. He’ll stick with his system come H*** or highwater and it’s finally biting him in the keyster. Not sure why, but he’s been hellbent on the QB run for three weeks now, but sticks with Washington for a majority of the game. Days is by no means a good passer and rarely attempts the pitch, but if you’re going to be predictable, at least do so with a better opportunity. Who’s the faster runner? Days. Who’s the more physical presence? Days. So, let’s wait until the fourth quarter when it’s obvious that Washington can’t get his crap together to make the substitution. What we’ve seen the past four weeks is a joke, but don’t expect anyone other than Ugay fans and detractors to be laughing.

A couple of weeks ago, a GT fan said GT was 6-0 and on the way to a National Championship. Where are you now? Reality check, GT can’t win big football games because the good teams have figured out how to stop the offense. When GT gets down early, they don’t have the offense that can come back and win a game. I said Tech would go 6-6 this season. I knew I would be wrong after they beat North Carolina but they willl only end up 7-5. At lease that will get you to a bowl but how many of those has CPJ won? haha and techies bash Richt but they really need to look at their own sidelines to a coach that SHOULD be on the hot seat!

Oh and for those of you calling out Groh, now’s not the time to do it. That’s the best we’ve got out of our D all season. The problem resides in the offense people and the quicker the GT fanbase realizes that the better. Triple option means nothing when all you do is run the QB keep, but regardless, it’s a novelty at best. Keep allowing yourselves to get fat on teams like Kansas and MTSU and we’ll be destined for mediocrity

It is frustrating to watch a team fall apart like they have the last 3 weeks. I must admit that i think teams have figured out this offense but i think tech is killing theirselves also. No special teams, no punter, no run defense, and now a struggling offense. If i was a season ticket holder i would give those tickets away to next weeks game because you are wasting your time going to that one. Clemson may beat tech worse that they have ever been beaten at home in a long time. This game could be about 56-10 if the jackets don’t start hitting on all cylinders.

We have it and i think we can win two more games (VPI) is beatable. If we can do that and then if Vad is all that most of you guys says he is, we should be much better next year. We do not lose that much to graduation.

Sonny B. Layne

I take no pleasure in seeing Tech lose, except against GA. But, here are the facts. If you are are really good passer, you need to go where they throw the ball to get better. M. Stafford would not have gone #1 playing at Tech. Same goes for good receivers. If you are good enough, like Calvin Johnson, it makes no difference, you still get drafted high. But if you are just good, but need to hone your skills and grow as a receiver to be a good draft pick, you won’t develop at Tech. You just won’t get the ball. I am not slamming Coach Johnson or Tech at all, but that is the problem with the offense that he is running. Joshua played at 110% and was extremely tough. Most Quarterbacks cannot stand the kind of punishment he took. My hat is off to him.

moboman

Its not so much that opponents have figured out the offense. Its that Washington is doing a terrible job running it. And you cant shoot yourself early with mistakes and expect to win. The game was over when we scored and then let them score with a minute left. Horrid special teams play, and poor QB play. You cant run the option if you telegraph which option you are going to choose each play.

Paul,

I have no illusion that his offense is wonderful, but if youre going to run it, you HAVE TO RUN IT WELL. The QB has taken the option out of the offense by making it obvious where the play is headed. He’s leaving nothing for the defense to figure out. We are trying to run an offense that demands skills at QB and RB that dont seem to be there.

This needs to be reposted frequently to remind dawgtards what an embarrassment they are.

Georgia Tech had the nation’s best average SAT score for football players, 1028 of a possible 1600, and best average high school GPA, 3.39 of a possible 4.0. But because its student body is apparently very smart, Tech’s football players still scored 315 SAT points lower than their classmates.

Many schools routinely used a special admissions process to admit athletes who did not meet the normal entrance requirements. More than half of scholarship athletes at the University of Georgia, the University of Wisconsin, Clemson University, UCLA, Rutgers University, Texas A&M University and Louisiana State University were special admits. . . At Georgia, for instance, 74 percent of athletes were special admits compared with 7 percent of the student body as a whole.

It would be great if Tech was more competitive, but most Tech fans are proud of our heritage of having intelligent, responsible athletes who go on to rewarding careers and contribute to society.

Contrast this with the very unintelligent dummies that UGA recruits. The 45 arrests over the last four years is proof enough, not to mention winning the Fulmer Cup. Most of these goons are tossed out after their eligibility is over, and many end up on welfare.
