Live from Braves-Phillies: A playoff series to reach the playoffs

A tight-lipped Fredi Gonzalez before tonight's titanic tilt. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)

One game up, three to go. If the Braves take two of three from Philadelphia, they’ll be assured of playing beyond the 162nd game — even if it’s a Thursday play-in in St. Louis. If they sweep the Phillies, this nose-diving team will have bounded into the playoffs and all those who’d dismissed their chances will conveniently forget those dismissals.

“We still control our own destiny,” Chipper Jones said, speaking late Monday afternoon. And it’s true. They do, at least for the moment. But the colder truth is that these Braves haven’t controlled much of anything since Labor Day.

The Braves led the wild-card chase by 8 1/2 games on Sept. 1. They’ve won two of the eight series since, and one of those two wasn’t really a series: It was a doubleheader in New York rescheduled from the washed-out Irene weekend of August. On Sept. 1, these Braves won their 81st game.  Twenty-two games later, they still haven’t reached 90 victories.

The past week has been spent asking where this would rank among epic collapses over the fullness of baseball history — worse than the ‘69 Cubs or the ‘78 Red Sox or the ‘64 Phillies? — but this caveat needs to be attached: All those teams had to win their division/league to reach postseason; these Braves have only to finish first among runners-up. And they’ve spent a month casting doubt on their capacity to achieve even that.

Some of this has been bad luck: When you lose your two best starting pitchers, you’re going to feel it. The Braves are trying to make the playoffs with a rotation that includes three rookies, which nobody can remember happening, and if they get there it’s unclear who, if anyone, will start the games in the Division Series. But that’s a different discussion for (perhaps) another day.

At issue now: Can the flagging Braves steel themselves for three days more? Game 1 didn’t figure to be easy: The Braves were scheduled to face Cliff Lee and the full complement of Phillies starters Monday night, and in a weird way that didn’t seem a mismatch. Because the Braves, who’d won four of their past 10 games, had actually been the hotter of the teams.

The Phillies clinched the National League East on Sept. 17. They then lost their next eight games. Yeah, they’ve been resting guys, but still: Is that the way to prepare for the playoffs? (One thing the Phillies’ skid did do was yield another of baseball’s bizarre benchmarks: This became the first team ever to lose eight straight after winning its 98th game.)

At their September nadir, the Braves have only lose four in a row. They haven’t been winning much, but they’ve won just enough to stay in front. That might sound like the faintest of praise, but it’s still something to note: With three games left, you’d rather be ahead than behind.

Said Jones: “We’ve had more than enough opportunities to walk off the field with wins that would have put this away long ago.”

They have, absolutely. But they haven’t blown this yet, and there’s no guarantee they will. “We have to treat this as a playoff series,” Jones said.

Then, asked about the mood in the locker room: “The locker room’s fine. The dugout might get a little tight at times.”

Someone wondered if Jones, who’s 39, still gets nervous. He smiled. “I don’t really get nervous,” he said. “I break it down to its simplest form: It’s the game of baseball; I’ve done this thousands and thousands of times.”

In his star-spangled career, Chipper Jones has seen everything — a World Series title, an MVP season in which he essentially decided a tight race, 13 playoff appearances. But he has never seen his Braves blow an 8 1/2-game lead in September and miss the postseason. If it happens, this would be a first.

But it might not happen. They might just ride out the worst ride of their lives. According to Baseball Prospectus, the Braves awoke Monday with a 71.7 percent chance of making the playoffs. That’s probably better than they deserve, but in baseball as in life, you don’t always get what you deserve.

And with that, the floor is again open for questions, comments and prophecies of doom. I welcome your input. I value your company. I appreciate your insights.

OK, enough. Join me, won’t you? And I thank you, as ever, in advance.

The Braves can do this…they just have to do things they’ve not done all year. One has to assume that the components of our lineup HAVE hit behind runners, with runners on, or worked pitchers from the first pitch before, right? How’d they get this far otherwise? Also, a nice outing from Delgado would be nice.

They haven’t given us a lot of reason to believe, but it would be a heck of a way to go into the playoffs by taking a series against the Phils in the last series of the season.

All I can stomach now is the announcement to come in Feburary for pitchers and catchers to show up for spring training. This year is toast! I know it, you know it, the Braves know it and all of baseball knows it. We couldn’t hit our way out of a wet paper bag and neither could our pitchers throw a fit, much less a shutout which is what it would take with our hitters on strike…………………………………….

Yes, we know but how many times has Chipper gone home early when the Braves seemingly had the best team? We’d rather hear what Hinske has to say. Two rings in three tries. The Braves seem to get the same result year after year. Early exit. Making Opening Day of Deer Season is not a good thing for a baseball player.

It speaks volumes to the ravaged staff that the Braves are barely holding on in a playoff race and are starting a rookie for the 159th game. Yet as banged up as the Braves pitching is, it’s the hitting — or lack thereof — that has doomed the team this month. No clutch hitting to think of. Do I want to see them make the playoffs? Sure. Do I think they’ll do anything with a patch-work rotation and c-c-c-cold lineup? Not really.

The Braves will not win another game this year. This is so sad! The Braves are nearing the end of an epic collapse. This is from a Braves fan since 1959 (Milwaukee then). I’ve endured alot in 52 years but this takes the cake. Very sad time for me in the middle of Phillie Land. Scranton /Wilkes-Barre area.

If the Braves blow this lead, the first finger should be pointed at the manager. He has had 159 tries to design a competent lineup and has failed miserably. He has had 159 tries – in Atlanta, that is – to learn to use a bullpen appropriately without abusing his pitchers and has failed miserably.

Truth be told, even if this team wins the World Series, Fredi needs to go. He has added no value to this team and has likely damaged its chances to win beyond this season.

Clusters babies are born ready to play ball and we was no exception. We was catching and throwing at the hospital and we was hitting when we got home. When we was a little baby learning to play ball and the pitcher was having control problems Coach would always tell us to make the pitcher throw us a strike before we took a swing. That was some sound advice because throwing a Clusters one down the middle will always cost you a run. We won’t be Hall of Fame like somebody on the Braves but we won’t be remembered for always losing in the playoffs, either. It’s a good thing he likes deer because a deer can be a good buddy in the woods. If we was bragging about beating the Phillies in the playoffs and then we blew the wild card we’d go into the woods and not come out for awhile. We’d get a big cooler and stock up on some Dairy Queen and we could last awhile.

Short of an extraordinary job by the offense, our season ends Wednesday. For weeks upon weeks we’ve failed in run-scoring opportunities. You just can’t use bad luck with injured pitchers as an excuse. Minor, Delgado, and to a certain degree Beachy, have given all they can to stabilize the situation. We never hit much when JJ and Hanson were healthy either.

This Braves team is about to go down as the “Famous 2011 Chokers” to be remembered in baseball forever. I know Chipper’s probably going to be in the Hall of Fame but let him add that label to his trophy mantle. I just wish there was a way(maybe an asterisk in the record books) that would identify Freeman, Hudson, Uggla, Bourn, Kimbrel, Venters, O’Flarehty, Constanza, and Delgado as team members that should not be associated with the “Choker” label. But the Manager and G.M. also deserve this tag since they are also both responsible for this mess. Fredi has not impressed overall in his first season and he has no fire in his belly, so why should the players. Buck Showalter would have turned this team around long before now. And under Wren’s control, other than the Bourn trade he hasn’t made another good trade or signing in his tenure. The Braves have been competitive since he arrived because of their minor league system and he had nothing to do with that. I hope the Braves big brass decides that’s it’s time for a change in the G.M. position and possibly in the Manager position. Maybe give Fredi one more year to see if this year was a fluke or if his years in Florida was the best he can do.

Mark, unless I missed your post, what I didnt see was what your prediction is about the outcome.

Right now, the Braves are just pathetic, and, with the so-hot Cards playing the pitiful Astros, things dont seem to be going in our favor.

I keep wavering between what I think is going to happen. I think the least likely scenario will be us winning the WC outright before Wednesday. I think we will either have a one game playoff, won by the Cards, or our season will be over on Wednesday as the Cards win the WC outright by then.

Sorry, but as much as I want to hope we can pull it off, I just dont see it happening with how things are going right now.

Yes you do Chipper, but how’s that been going? Braves are gonna choke these last three games as the Cards will win with ease. Fredi messed up by taking Constanza out while he was hot and playing Heyward instead, listening to the fans instead of going with his gut. ITS GIVE AND TAKE!!! You want winning teams? GO TO SOME GAMES! Some argue that they need to win first before they spend their hard earned money. Well we have the potential to win now. THAT should be enough to motivate fans to get out to the park. Atlanta will never be known as a great sports town because it doesn’t have great sports fans. I think I may have mentioned this before on this blog, but.. I live in PA where I get the Philly TV stations. Charlie Manuel told the media in Philly that his players wont be mailing these games in. He said they owe it to both the Braves and the Cards to play hard, and try to win the games. So, even in their minds, the Phillies wont be looking at it as “We already clinched, so it doesnt matter if we get beat three times by the Braves”. If the Braves want wins in this series, they are going to have to earn them.

You mentioned epic collapses in baseball history, but you omitted one,. As someone who despises the Mets, its one I have loved to tease my friends who are Mets fans about, and may end up now eating my words for.

2007: Mets 7 games up in the division with 17 games to play. Phillies overtake them, and win the division by one game.

Granted, there was more season left when this Braves collapse has happened, but, I’m just hopeful that I’m not eating my taunting words about the 2007 Mets, come this Wednesday around 10pm eastern

When that Dilly Bar hit the ground and got infield dirt all over it we remained calm and composed and we just picked up that Dilly Bar and looked over at the other team’s dugout and took a big bite, Dilly Bar, dirt, and all. We didn’t even stop at the stick. We ate that, too. Showing toughness to the other team makes it easier to play winning baseball. We would never want ‘em to see us hugging in the dugout and patting each other on the fanny.

Martin Prado is a fine super utility player but his numbers have waned since being a starter. Alex Gonzalez has a good glove but he doesn’t hit on a regular basis. Well, playin’ for the Braves is a-kinda laid back

They pitch us outside and we take another hack

Fredi Gonzalez don’t give us no flack

Thank God I’m a country boy

Got a million-dollar pitcher with a 10-cent arm

Couldn’t hit the side of a Pottery Barn

Pretty good pitchers down on the farm

Thank God I’m a country boy

Well we got more holes than a sponge up the middle

We win sometimes, but very, very little

Baseball’s nothin’ but a funny, funny riddle

Thank God I’m a country boy

When the season’s all done and the sun is settin’ low

We load up our rifles and we’re stringin’ up the bow

Deers are a-waitin’ and I’m gonna shoot a doe

Thank God I’m a country boy

We’d play in the World Series, if’n we could

But the Mets and the Marlins, they was just too good

Round these parts, it’s understood

Thank God I’m a country boy

Well we got more holes than a sponge up the middle

We win sometimes but very very little

Baseball’s nothin’ but a funny funny riddle

Thank God I’m a country boy

Well I wouldn’t trade a-huntin’ for a Ring with jewels

I never was one of them Ring-wearin’ fools

I’d rather have my rifle and my deer-huntin’ tools

Thank God I’m a country boy

When the Phils are paradin’ in a black limousines

Pennsylvanians think that’s mighty keen

October here it’s just Hall-O-Ween

Thank God I’m a country boy

Well we got more holes than a sponge up the middle

We win sometimes but very very little

Baseball’s nothin’ but a funny funny riddle

Thank God I’m a country boy

matt in raleigh

September 26th, 2011
7:23 pm

Mark,
Here is my nonemotional plan to improve the Braves this offseason, whatever happens.

1. Replace larry parrish. Whatever philosophy he was preaching did not resonate. This offense underperformed all season except for a few stretches in the summer. Several guys had career worst years at the plate. To me, heyward’s struggles alone are enough to warrant consideration of a change. Throw in prado and mccann, and you’ve got red flags.

2. Bring in a starter quality corner outfielder. Hopefully a guy who can hit lefties and take a walk. This would allow the Braves to move prado back to his previous role as a super utility guy. Play him at 1b, 2b, 3b and LF. Prado has had a really bad year. They need to have an alternative in LF in case he struggles again.

Sometimes the best way to strengthen your bench is to bring in a starter.

3. Sign a veteran reliever. Those young guys still need a steadying presence.

4. Make clear to heyward that he better show up at disney world with a new swing, or else he will start the year on the bench.

I live in north Ga. and would like to see some games in person, but they built the stadium in Atlanta. I’ve done it before, get off work early in Marietta, drive home and shower, get kids outta school, leave home 2-3 hours early, sit on 400 & Connector and pay for tickets, parking, food etc. No tears for me please, I’m just saying in this economy everybody that wants to just can’t. So when trashing the fans just consider everyone’s just not as rich as some of the others, and alot of other things are not so easy for everyone.

MB,

You are without a doubt the biggest d-bag to ever serve as a sports writer.

Chipper was not a contributor to the lone title the 1995 Braves brought home. He has been a leader, or lack thereof, of a team that has consistently underachieved. He is a redneck and a mental loser. Too bad the Hall does not take these types of qualities into consideration.

Your blind optimism is beyond annoying. Every year you make stupid predictions that never come true. Rather than this Pollyanna article, why didn’t you call out the weak hitting of the Braves. BTW, starting pitching has not been the Braves problem down the stretch. It has been hitting. The weak-minded hitters have gone in the tank. “If that guy fails, then I can fail too” is what these guys think.

Bourn’s OBP as a Brave is down to .310. Pretty disappointing.

Like I always say during any discussion about hitting coaches, I don’t know how much effect Larry Parrish or Terry Pendleton really has, but literally everyone on this year’s team has performed below what they did last year. If you’re the type who believes that hitting coaches have an impact, there’s a strong case to be made for Larry Parrish’s firing.

Katherine, Joe Simpson had the gall to actually say that Chipper didn’t have time to react to that liner to 3B. The ball was a normal line drive hit about 2 feet to his right. A triple A third baseman makes that in his sleep. Disgraceful (Simpson, not Chipper).

The Atlanta Braves goathorns are now in the unsure hands of Chipper Jones.

Let’s face it, if it wasn’t Brooks it would have been someone else.

Of course, when you’ve miraculously overcome a late-game deficit with two outs in the 8th inning in a pivotal Game 3 and you allow the guy who has become a clear defensive liability to return to his position in the top of the 9th inning you deserve to have a national television audience bear witness and be reminded for one final time what a complete f*ing moron you are.

Maybe I defend Brooks more than he deserves to be defended but the blame for the series loss to the Giants will always go to the baffoon, Bobby Cox.

On a serious note, the Braves should flip one of Ibanez, Victorino or Rollins on their backsides (or heck, all three) in an upcoming at bat. Not because we’re pizzed off at giving up hits, but because they are all too darn comfortable at the plate against us.

I pulled for this team when Dale Murphy and Bob Horner were on the corners, but I can honestly say, I have never been as frustrated with a team in my life. They absolutely refuse to step up and face the pressure, and I hold this manager responsible; he cannot, or he has not to this date motivated this team. They are letharigic, and unispired. Per chance they do somehow back into (because they are not going in any other way) the playoffs, does anyone realistically see them getting out of the first round? No regular with more than 80 RBIs or with an average above 290. A team BA of .245. With anemic team offense like that you’re lucky to win 80 games, never mind contend for the post-season.

The starters do not go deep enough into games, so the bullpen is exhausted.

And the basic reason for these deficiencies is that the team couldn’t afford to buy better talent.

And the reason for that is that Atlanta fans don’t buy enough tickets.

It’s that simple.

Ah, yes. Blame the fans.

It’s our fault.

Only 55k in attendance last year for Game 3 and the Braves lose despite having their opponent down to their last strike.

Clearly there were just not enough people there.

There could have been at least two or three more in the standing room only section.

It’s our fault. We as fans have to do better to support this hard working team.

It’s such a rewarding experience rooting on the Braves as they put the cherry on top of their worst September performance in 22 years.

Bourne running at 2nd could have been a huge run to set up the 9th. At least make an attempt to break up the DP in the 8th. Prado should be benched! The same six words describe both the departed Thrashers and the Braves. Spineless wimps, gutless wonders, overpaid underachievers. 18 trips to the playoffs and 1 World Series ring? It’s the same pattern every time, all the big hitters bat .200 or below and the bullpen goes south for the winter. You make it sound like they are dogs or something. Losing a second baseman for a month is different from losing 2 of your best starters. JJ doesn’t have fatigue. He has a knee problem. Kind of like Oswalt and his back. But you can afford to lose Oswalt because he is not one of your top 3 starters.

Why can’t the braves sell out a game – that’s just pathetic (or should I say apathetic?)

Greg – Disagree! Fredi is a good manager and Frank should not make a dumb decision and let him go. Last year, we heard bye bye Bobby from the manager hatters. Players must play the game! McCann, Prado, Uggla, Heyward, & Chipper were keys to this team. Pitching has been good. Hitting has not been for the last 3 weeks. Fredi has not swung the first bat this year! Hit the baseball with runners in scoring position and this would have been decided 3 weeks ago.

Caption above the idiots head at the top of the page: “Where am I going and why am I in this handbasket?” Think if Lowe had not lost 16 games. We wouldn’t be here for this would we? And those stupes from Philly would have to go to their own blog.

Phillies have been good for four or five years now. Can’t remember what it was like to finish 12 games behind the Mets in 2006. Wasn’t all that long ago.

kerryb… We have lost Utely, Oswalt, Victorino, Howard, Polanco, Contares, Lidge, all for considerable time this year. We weren’t healthy most of the year. We were just better

No excuses here, Phillies, (no) class in the NL and icky, yellow.

Your team won it fair and square. Enjoy it. But a little humility would look good on you; your arrogance is putrid. You should go the the Philadelphia Inquirer blog and bask in reflected glory.

Thanks for the Constitution and for all of the war materials that you produced for World War II. But other than that, Philadelphia is a stink hole with a baseball team that’s been good for now, what, five years running!

I just remembered – after just one win, Uggla said “we’ve got our swagger back, now.” Reminds one of Jim Mora, ex-coach of the Saints who said in his now famous interview “playoffs, playoffs?? We’re just trying to win one game!!” The Not-So-Bravos may not even do that.

I can’t attend many games since I reside 4 hours away. However, if I lived in Atlanta, I would have a hard time supporting this team with my attendance. I hope if Fredi is not let go that the fans will express their displeasure and boycott the team. This is absolutely the worst managerial work I have ever seen on a Braves team. Makes Bragan, Torre, and early Cox look like geniuses.

The same six words that describe the now departed Thrashers apply to the Braves: Spineless wimps, gutless wonders, overpaid underachievers. Eighteen trips to the NL playoffs and one Series ring? Ya gotta be kiddin’ me! Maybe there’s an opening in Winnipeg for a new Canadian franchise? Hope so.

I’ve been coaching baseball for 25 years and I can say with experience, although not at the Pro level, that players have to take ownership! You cannot be managed to a win! Players must execute! Hitting, Pitching, and base running are the keys to winning. Fredi cannot do this for them! Neither could Bobby Cox, Chuck Tanner, Russ Nixon, or even Joe Torre when they served as managers. Players own the responsibility for execution. They have not performed in September. Managers can only put them in strategic situations that give them a chance to win. Players win the games!

See the team with the worst record in baseball win with two straight bunts?

Our boy Fredi couldn’t call a bunt wo save his life…the other night we had bases loaded no outs with Bourn at bat…..then second and third and 1 out….

bunts……………??????????????????

of course not….to hell with the speed fundamental baseball game….sit back and wait for somethign to happen………..

You think those guys for Houston tonight decided to bunt in the bottom of the 10th?????????????

Sure….manager called for sure…..

When your team can’t hit….you bunt……………………..
