Key question: Do the Falcons still know what they’re doing?

It's this bad: Even the Bucs are mocking the Dirty Birds. (AP photo)

It has gotten this bad: Even the Bucs are mocking the Dirty Birds now. (AP photo)

Tampa – The Falcons are too good to be playing this way. They’ve trailed by double figures in all three games. They look great when they finally get serious, but by then their margin for error has been reduced to the nub, and any more wobbles — a dropped pass, a sack that shouldn’t have been taken, a lurch offside with the game literally on the line — can result in a good-looking team taking a big ugly L.

Asked Sunday night if he has been seeing the team he thought he’d see, coach Mike Smith said: “No, I’m not seeing that team … We’re making way too many mistakes.”

The same question was posed to center Todd McClure,  who said: “No. We’ve got a great group of players, but we haven’t put it all together.”

Then this: “I feel like we’re holding ourselves back. We’re not making the plays that are there to be made.”

The obvious next questions: Why not? Why is a team fancied as a Super Bowl winner darn fortunate to be 1-2? Why do the Falcons start so slowly? Why has their devotion to details — a Smith staple — gone missing? Why must the long-promised “explosive” plays be saved for the desperate hours?

Nobody seems to know. The Falcons spent three quarters letting an OK Tampa Bay team get ahead and stay there, and it wasn’t as if the Bucs seized every moment. They netted three points from two sacks-and-recovered-fumbles inside the Falcons’ 20. They had a chance to pull ahead by three scores but threw an interception on the first play of the fourth quarter, whereupon a mystery guest appeared.

A team wearing the Falcons’ uniforms drove inside the Tampa Bay 5, then got the ball back and scored in two plays, then got the ball again and surged to the 5 again. At that moment you’d have sworn this team would seize the lead and win the game and talent would have finally been served, but at the same time you wondered: Where had this team been for 2 1/2 hours?

Let’s not fault the defense. It held the Bucs under 300 yards. Let’s turn instead to the high-priced offense, which has in two road games managed one touchdown. Asked if the Falcons aren’t a better team when three wide receivers are deployed and the no-huddle offense is implemented, Matt Ryan said: “I think we’re a good football team regardless of our personnel.”

For the first time in the four years of their partnership, it’s possible to wonder if Smith and general manager Thomas Dimitroff are as like-minded as we’d come to believe. Dimitroff traded 21 spots upward to land the hugely gifted Julio Jones, and through three quarters Sunday the receiver had one catch. He had five — for 97 yards — in the fourth. How hard is it to pull a Keyshawn Johnson and say: “Get that guy the darn ball”?

But it cuts deeper than tactics. There’s a weird air about this team. On the one hand, the Falcons seem careless. (Three turnovers and five penalties in this first half.) On the other hand, they seem scared to cut loose until circumstances render cutting loose a last resort. Former Falcons punter Michael Koenen, now a Buc, told the Tampa Tribune: “Up there, it’s a lot tighter. There’s a lot more nervous energy.”

There’s pressure on this team, yes. Dimitroff didn’t make big moves for Jones and Ray Edwards because he thought the Falcons might win a Super Bowl sometime in the next 30 years, and Arthur Blank — he of the not-exactly-relaxing late-game sideline appearances — has made it clear his only goal is to win a ring. But is a 53-man roster that includes only two Super Bowl winners capable of knowing what it takes without having ever come close?

The Falcons’  stated position is a reasonable one: They have enough talent to do whatever needs doing and enough time to correct the errors. Said John Abraham, the defensive end: “We’ve got to be back to playing Falcons football.”

For three seasons we thought we knew what that entailed — power football, focused football, precision football. Today we see a team that can’t handle the small stuff and seems, big-picture-wise, not to know what it’s trying to do. It’s as if the Falcons keep falling behind because falling behind is the only way they get to play the way they play best. It’s as if this grand design has lost all coordination.

What about controlling the line of scrimmage, on both sides of the ball. Was Dirty Dahl so important? What about on D? Missing Babs and and Anderson. At least Jamaal was a good run stopper.

Tampa was just sitting there: wanting to be beat

If this offense can’t run (and was Dahl as important as he appears to have been), then Matt Ryan needs to be Aaron Rodgers… But we can’t run . And Ryan isn’t Rodgers

Mularkey is a relic…they are holding back Matt Ryan and the offense. It’s clear that the no huddle multiple WR set is the way to go right now…I know they wanna run Turner from the I formation but it isn’t working very well (with the exception of a few runs in the first 3 games).

They should go look at the K-Gun offense from the early 90’s…the Bills dominated the AFC with it. We’ve got the personnel…just don’t be scared to use it!

Nothing wrong with the Defense…they played well today. Today’s on the offensive coordinator and the players failing to protect Ryan – (who got beat up yet again). One more thing – Roddy less talking and more HOLDING ON to the darn ball!

Why are people (Eric C.) so quick to say Turner is a problem? The offense cant do JACK if there is no blocking. I watched all three games and the common theme is that the offensive line has issues. If that doesn’t change we’ll be lucky to get to .500, regardless of our offensive personnel!

Frustrated with the poor starts on the road, the lack of pass protection, and the turnovers. However, it is still very early Falcons fans. When the schedule came out most of us said that we would be in good shape if we were 3-2 after 5 games. That being said Seattle is now a must win game in my opinion. We have to beat Seattle, then we need to go 4-1 in the rest of our NFC South games, 2-1 in our remaining NFC North games, and 3-1 against the AFC South. That puts us at 11-5. And I agree Bradley, THROW JULIO THE D*** BALL!

I don’t think our coaches are on their game….yet. Our Offensive-identity the last two years was run first to set up the play action pass. Not seeing that tactic. 1 and 2 not the end of the world but things are suddenly tough in the division with NO 2 and 1 and TB 2 and 1 (and effectively 2 games up on us at this point). Next week is another defining moment for the season and another must-win game.

Hey Mark,

I’ve got a few questions related to what you have implied in your writeup.

Since the team moves the ball well with Ryan orchestrating the offense in the no-huddle, why don’t the coaches concede the point and leverge Ryan’s play-selection savvy on a fulltime basis?

Shouldn’t Ryan be allowed to call the plays at the line of scrimmage at all time, similar to the way Peyton Manning does? My recollection s that the tactic is always effective. What do you think?

Aside from the mistakes (and there have been many), what we’re seeing is that the Falcons are not a power running football team. They are a passing team. They play better in the no-huddle because they’re throwing it. Will Mularkey adjust the running game to fit the passing game and allow Ryan to go to work? If he’s incapable or unwilling to do so, will Smith and Dimitroff overrule him?

Been throgh this before

This is a poorly coached footbal team ! I have seen better tackling on a episode of pro’s vs Joe’s .
Horrible O line play, penalties, & QB who looks like a deer in headlights. Coach Smith needs to give up all the cliche’ post game comments about “we have to work harder” , “it is one me” ! Usally that means a coach doesn’t know how to fix the problem. Blank needs to stay in his box as well !

Hairy Dawg

The problem for Falcons is O-line being stinky. That why Ryan sacked 15 times in 3 games and Burner Turner can’t run ball. We need to get more mean and nasties on line. And getting more Dawgs on team do that. We need players like Stinchcomb and Ben Jones to put Oline talent on field that willing to get nasty. Then we get back to playing like Falcons skill players is capable of.

So here we are 3 weeks into the season. Ryan has been sacked 13 times and knocked down 2 dozen times. Today Turner barely put together 20 yards on 11 carries. Granted it is only the third week, but at this rate forget about the playoffs and forget about Ryan finishing the season. The guy can only pull himself off the ground so many times before he just doesn’t get up anymore. The line is AWFUL … I have been preaching since presason that not resigning Dahl was a mistake and now we are all seeing that first hand. Defense, ironically looked pretty solid today. The only TD that Tampa Bay put up came off Ryan’s fumble. Get the line figured out and we are in decent shape.

I wonder if the lockout has had a really negative affect on this team. We look like a team that wasn’t ready for the season to start. We’re making silly mental mistakes that we’ve never made since Smitty has been here, and in all three games we’ve been extremely sluggish out of the gate. Instead of playing smart and executing, it looks like we’re having to rely on “out-talenting” our opponents. That’s never been the way we’ve won games over the last three years.

I still think this team will be fine. The two fourth quarter comebacks the last two weeks shows that this is still a team that believes in itself and can pull it together at crunch time. But Smitty has to figure out how to get these guys ready to play for 60 minutes, which is something we used to take for granted.

The Falcons have several “serious” problems (little explosiveness, kicking game, etc.), however perhaps the most serious is the beating Ryan is taking. Four more sacks today to go along with 4 more hits. Contrast that with zero sacks of Freeman and only two hits.

Matt Ryan said: “I think we’re a good football team regardless of our personnel.”

I come here and said this for the past 2 year….The reason why Matty Ice will never be elite is because he never ever talks about improvement.

Every Elite QB out there, even when they win, talk about the plays left on the field, the areas they can improve on, the things they did wrong and need to work on….

Matty Ice….”We’re good”!

Matty Ice will never ever be elite, because in his mind he is already good!

Don’t blame Ryan. He’s as accurate as they come. Comfortable in the pocket, throwing between the seams. Jones is overhyped, horrendously less talented than we expected and we gave up a king’s ransom for this non-entity; Roddy is, well, just Roddy – an idiot, butterfingers, big-mouth receiver who scores a touchdown once every eclipse and Tony is over-the-hill who left his best days in KC. We have no creative offensive coordinator. Our defense is lucky we didn’t give up 40 today to Tampa – Let me say that again. WE WERE NEVER IN THIS GAME – AGAINST THE BUCS!!!!! Wake up people. WE’RE the ones who SUKKK donkey dongs….now we’re the dregs of the division. At least Carolina has Cam. What do we have? Ole Noodle Arm behind center. And we’re going to compete against the Saints? They went scoreless in the first quarter and scored 40 in the next two-and-a-half quarters against a Texas defense that gave up a combined 13 points in the first two games. Gonna be a loooooong season with Mikey and Mularkey folks. Just those names themselves should tell us a lot about what we have. Wake up Art….time to start reaching for resume’s.

Now that I have calmned down a little, some objective analysis:

1- Defense actually played pretty well right up to freeze play, but Tampa is a second
rate offense. I shudder to think what Rodgers and Brees are going to do to them. To me,
their defensive problem is the scheme BVG runs. I would love to see them ditch the 4-3 and
go with a 3-4, which is an attacking defense rather than a read and react.

2- For as much as he frustrates me, Ryan is actually a pretty good QB. You say he looks scared?
Well, you would be too if you had to rely on that bunch of stiffs on the OL for protection. He
looks a lot like Bartkowski did (yeah, I’m old) in his first days when he was running for his
life every down – not to mention the 2 knee surgeries he had. He turned into an all star when
they started using prime draft picks on guys like Mike Kenn and Warren Bryant.

3- Which leads me to say the un-sayable. What has Dimitroff accomplished in his player
selection? Can you name more then 4 guys he drafted that are providing quality minutes,
much less impact? Eh? Thought not. It has been apparent that the OL is a disaster waiting
to happen (to the QB), but he mortgages the next 2 years to go up and get Julio. I love the
guy, but he cant catch the ball 40 yards downfield if Ryan is getting hogtied by DEs. If you
have a top notch OL, you can get by with average skill talent – see New England. I question
TDs talent assesment and judgement.

4- Sam Baker is a guard, period. I have never seen a guy more consistently off balance and
out of position. I bet he staggers from side to side and spontaneously falls down walking
up his driveway. He has to be replaced before we end up playing the rest of the season
w/ Redman as the starter. Reynolds, Johnson, or whoever – dont see how it could be much worse.

Ignore the Saints trolls – if you had to live in a craphole like NO where people pi$$ in the streets
like dogs, you would be bitter and psychotic too – pity them, dont hate them.

This offensive line has got to be fixed…NOW!

This is the 3rd week in a row that this line has stunk up the field. It’s a problem that had bled into the entire team. Atlanta has the weapons to be an explosive offense, Roddy and Julio both had over 100 yards today. But something has got to be done about this line. This team is too talented to and has too strong of a nucleus to have ONE aspect of the team sink them to 7-9 or 8-8.

With all that being said, its early: New England lost today, the Eagles are 1-2 as well. Jets lost today and are LUCKY to be 2-1. And the Bills, the BILLS are 3-0. It’s been a weird season so far, and it seems like every team other than Green Bay, has question marks like us.

Issues with OL need to be fixed. Poor run blocking and poor pass blocking. Once they got decent in the 4th, Ryan had time to throw the ball down field.

Just watched the game on DVR, amazing amount of holding by the Bucs secondary. Arms wrapped around receivers holding them while ball is in the air. Big holding call on Blalock in the 4th, yet on Bucs last third down run, the Bucs guard was tackling Lofton and he was try to make the play. Pretty sad.

Roddy dropped the touchdown in the flat that would have won the game.

Turner ???? Run Game ???

September 25th, 2011
10:05 pm

Turner has no burst thru the line and seems unable to hit any hole aggressively. Unless the line opens up a huge gap it is rare that Turner ever creates anything positive on his own. Turner was none as the BURNER but those days seem long ago. Where is his burst? He was supposed to be more of a receiving threat this year. We have problems until we return to an effective ground game the allows Matt to play-action. Right now we have no identity and I trace it back to Turner and the impression that I have that he has lost a step (or two).

Is everybody crazy?? The problem with this years Falcons IS THEY FORGOT WHAT THEIR STRENGTH IS AND THATS RUNNING THE DAMN BALL! Not throwing it 45-50 times a game! The Falcons handed the ball to Turner last year and put together more 6-8 minute scoring drives than anybody else! Now this team went out and got another receiver and now they have changed their identity from a dominating running team to a pass happy New England Patriots WANT TO BE:S! Matt Ryan was and never will be a great throwing QB, he is better when the running game is forcing teams to load the box and stop their running game and THEN HE HITS THEM WITH PLAY ACTION! Late in the 4th quarter they had 1st and goal on the 5 yard line. Instead of handing the ball to Turner, they threw it 3 downs in a row! Now I ask you, could Turner not run the ball in in 3-4 trys from the 5 yard line?? HELL YES! This would have worked better than throwing it 3 times! As long as they keep throwing the ball every down instead of running Turner some THEY WILL KEEP LOSING! THEY HAVE FORGOT THEIR WEAPON IN TURNER!!

Once again, the Falcons failed to move the ball down the field. Had they done that with consistency, we would not be looking at a “must-win” against Seattle. And why not give Merkin more carries? That is a failure on the part of the coaching staff. Giving Merkin the ball 20 to 30 times would have established a solid running threat and opened up the passing game.

Turner has lost a step and goes down too easy…but the OL is in shambles now and only seems to do well in the no-huddle…so not sure any back would get it done at this point for the Falcons in their traditional formations. Need major improvement on the OL before the Packers game…

Julio Jones and Ray Edwards would have been icing on the cake, but there is no cake. Football is won or lost on the front lines, in the trenches. The offensive line had attained a certain chemistry up to last year, but the loss of Harvey Dahl was devastating to this team. Matt Ryan has no time to make a play. And the defensive front hasn’t been good for a long time. It was the team’s major weakness last year against Green Bay in the playoff disaster. This year does not look promising.

The offense is a mess. The OL isn’t suited to a deep passing game. Baker is not an NFL caliber left tackle. I don’t care if we have 5 Julio Jones, the QB will be on his back before they get 20 yards down the field.

Actually I hate it when we play the Falcons !! you guys do have a solid team !! Blank is a great owner !! here is what I think Matt Ryan seems to get a little shaken when he is pressured, the guy will kill you …but if he is sacked a few times it appears to rattle him. Tampa knows this , and they know getting to him is there only chance to win. Matty ICE looks like he needs to ” beef” up…reminds of Chris ” the sissy” Simms that played for us. Tunner the ‘ BURNER” has lost a step.. it happens. I love your head coach … your receivers are MONSTERS !! To many players on your defense are getting long at the tooth ! What do you think .. cities like ATL should not pay to watch teams like Falcons or Braves, they are good for nothing.. they play for money .. no talent like GB to take the big step instead took 10 steps back this season .. so with this management and players we will never make to SB. Please fire Mike Smith, Mularkey we need a offensive minded coach and top aggressive defensive coach to build a new team from the ground up.. Trade Matt Ryan, Turner as soon as possiblewhen they have value.. get some draft picks for next year .. someone hear me before we are stinkers like Detroit was in past decade…

One thing for sure, Tampa didn’t win the game, the Falcons lost it. Horrible offensive line protection in the 1st half, Roddy White deflecting a pass for an interception that cost us 3, dropped another that cost us 6. Offsides on defense at the END OF THE GAME? This team better get it together soon. Even with Ryan throwing for over 330 yards, Turner running for 20 isn’t going to cut it.

The only thing worse than the play calling was the execution. There seems to be something missing on both sides of the ball. At times, Ryan looks lost (especially when teams drop 6 and 7 in coverage). The defense kept the game close, but they too look lost. And against the Bucs, there is no reason for that because they run out of running sets and pass out of passing sets. Really nothing complex. Not sure what Mularkey is seeing. The offsides penalty was inexcusable.

The good news is the team is healthy and have some cupcakes in the next few weeks.

The Problem with this Team is they need to just settle down, forget last year, forget what King said in SI, and start next week off as its the beginning of Season and they all brand new to the NFL and Play the Game one game at a Time. Even forget they have so much talent on the Team .
This loss today is unacceptable to the Fans, to the City, to the State and even to their own selves as Pros in NFL.
The answer is very simply to start with the Basics, run the ball to set up the play-action pass, let Ryan call the plays and operate that offense the entire {ENTIRE} game period !
We keep telling them whats the key to win, but nobody seems to be listening .

This team is not a Superbowl Contender. They will end up 10 -6 or 9-7 this year. I have been a diehard Falcons Fan since the Dan Henning/ David Archer days. Its funny how it looks like they are poorly coached and get pushed around like a bunch of sissies.
It starts with attitude and above average coaching. That last drive for Tampa Bay was proof of how bad Brian Van Gorder is, he knew they were going to run the ball to run out the clock.
The defense has the players and I hope Dimitroff can see that Poor Defense Coaching is to Blame.
For the Falcons to be at the Next level, Brian Van Gorder will need to be replaced. He is an awesome College Coach, but not in the NFL. Sort of like a Spurrier or Pete Carroll.
FYI, Don’t expect any difference this year if the Falcons happen to make the playoffs.

Be patient – much of this I attribute to the lockout and the killing playoff loss. Everyone needs to relax, including the team. Detroit is 3-0 – are they going to be 10-0? No. Is Buffalo? No. Last year we got clobbered in a similar game on the road in Philly. We were 4-2. I’ll bet my hat we’ll be 4-2 again in a few weeks. We suck on grass. We only have two more grass games, in December when the field is likely to be faster. I knew when I saw the field it was going to be a long day – for some reason our schemes don’t work on the grass fields – maybe it’s just a matter of footwear.

The offensive line can’t protect. What happened? Did we get a new OLine Coach? If we did, bring back the old one. If we didn’t, he’s not doing his job and we need to get someone else. I think we need a new Offensive Coordinator. The big explosive plays aren’t there. And the Defensive Coordinator appears in over his head. A simple 4th and 1 where all the DLine needs to do is just stay put and not jump offsides, and it can’t do that. During that timeout, the DC should have told them to stayput over and over again. And in the end Roddy probably scores and we win the game if Roddy doesn’t drop that pass. Oh, and why pass the ball when we have a 1st and goal at there 5 – very bad play calling there.

I think the playbook (or at least the offensive coordinator) is in need of an overhaul if the Falcons are ever going to deliver on being “explosive”. You don’t get much explosiveness by drawing up 95 percent of your passing plays for less than ten or fifteen yards…which is what’s been happening. And these draw plays that end up short of the line of scrimmage; ditch ‘em! Don’t advertise what you’re not able to or don’t intend to deliver.

And yes, the O-line needs serious help if not some outright replacements; Matt Ryan is getting crushed out there because of this bunch.

As for the Falcons’ locker room not being “loose”, perhaps on some levels that might help a bit…but then again the Patriots, where Dimitroff hails from and the Falcons are attempting to emulate on so many levels, would probably not be described as an overly “loose” bunch given the personality of their coaching staff. If anything, any feeling of pressure Koenan got in Atlanta probably was the product of a franchise (and a city on a sports town level) trying desperately to shed a very negative past image. They’ve largely done just that, but everyone knows they really won’t have completed the journey until the Lombardi Trophy is paraded down Peachtree. Hence the pressure; nothing less than a championship is a successful season. Welcome to the big leagues, Atlanta, and all of what comes with it.

I agree with Mr. Bradley’s assessment; something does feel “off” with the Falcons in the same way the Braves have felt “off” all season long…and that doesn’t bode well, I’m afraid.

The problem here is the O-LIne. Defense played good enough to win, no sacks though. Ryan does have a noodle ARM, Juio had to darn near come to a stop to catch that pass, but he can’t throw the ball at all if he is alwas on his back. Could’nt’ throw the ball out of the back of the endzone when on the run, but we know this so we need to play with our personnell. A lot of QBs do not have great arms and do okay for themselves.. Not a big Ryan fan, but OLine needs to do better and we can be okay with our limited arm strength, cause i do think Ryan is pretty smart.

Coaches better figure something out becasue opposing coaches have figured us out. fixing all the penalties and turnovers would be a start but that is largely a function of the OLine.

I have been watching Atlanta sports since I moved here in 1971. At first I thought the Atlanta professional sports teams needed better players, coaches and owners. Now it seems to me that the teams just play for a paycheck with little emotion. Matt Ryan talks a great game like how they need to clean up a few things and they will be allright. C’mon Matt, two fumbles and an interception in the third game of your fourth year as a starting QB in the NFL. Ryan’s first pass was an off target heave to the fullback. You have to give the receiver a catchable ball and lead the receiver if you want yards after the catch.

On the last fumble Ryan was facing an obvious blitz package right up the middle and he had no backs in the backfield to block. How about taking a clue and checking off that play or fire the ball out right away or call timeout. Maybe we’re just not thinking how to win. Just punch the clock and collect a paycheck.

Show me some emotion and I’ll be back.

The Falcons offensive line couldn’t keep toddlers – no blitzing corner or linebacker toddlers mind you, just the 4 down line-toddlers – from sacking Matt Ryan. It might be the saddest display of professionalism and pride I’ve ever seen. Apparently, Harvey Dahl was fairly important.

The only thing worse could be our punter, who’s managed to put together (I believe) a two game streak of punts <20 yards in length. By the time the sun comes up a printout of this blog might be longer than those gems.

The Falcons are not going to blow out the Bucs nor the Saints. The Bucs were favored by 1.5 in this game. Tampa Bay is not Carolina. Bucs were a 10-6 team last year…only 3 games worse than the Falcons. And they always play Atlanta tough. They were bound to win sooner or later the way these games have gone. It’s week 3 of a 17 week season. Calm the frick down! Anyone that thought the Falcons would go 13-3 or even 14-2 like some were saying with this schedule in this division is delusional!

The Offensive Line and refusal to play the 3 WR set in the no huddle is what cost us the game period. We can’t pass block worth a flip right now and we move the ball in the no huddle. That is not even close to open for debate. So…the real question is…Will Mike Smith step up and say that’s what needs to happen inside the organization? If we keep playing like we did today, we aren’t going ANYWHERE, let alone, playoffs!!!!

Here are the biggest issues we have:

1. O-Line

2. If number one isn’t working our protecting, all other problems don’t matter.

First rule in football; Your QB is only as good as his O-line allows him to be!!!!!!!

Our defense is WAY TOO soft right now and we are not getting ANY kind of pass rush, and even if we do, it’s too late and we end up getting flagged for a personal for for late hit on the opposing QB. We have GOT to get Babineaux back ASAP!!

I knew from preseason and I told my friends that if our starters get injured then we are pretty much screwed b/c our No. 2 defense couldn’t stop anyone in preseason.

It was good to see McClure back but he had that COSTLY snap that didn’t even get to Ryan, so he is going to have to shack some rust off.

Daunta, nothin’ but love for ya but you have GOT to play the ball quicker. Yet again, you slipped down after your receiver caught a quick slant. You get paid WAY TO MUCH to making ROOKIE mistakes like that.

Will Turner EVER hit the hole without stopping five yards in the back field first????? He has NO SPEED when Ryan hands off the ball to him. That’s why he only gets 3 yards per carry. Snelling at least hits the hole at full speed and says, “Try and stop me!”

The offsides on the last play of the game was COMPLETELY INEXCUSABLE!!!!! Again, these guys get paid way too much to making these types of STUPID mistakes.

In closing, I will say that the Falcons ARE BETTER than their 1-2 record, but as the old saying goes, your only as good as your last game!!!!!

Right the ship FAST or we are staring at an 8-8season….IF WE ARE LUCKY!!!!!!!!!

We still can’t stop anybody on defense, we still can’t cover a reciever on a big third-down play and prevent them from catching it, we still can’t run the ball effectively on anybody more talented than a high school team, and our effing punter can’t kick it out of my dam* living room.

Until our offensive line grows some onions and chooses to BLOCK for our runners and PROTECT our quarterback; until our defense grows some onions and chooses to fight through blocks and STOP people in key situations (such as, oh, I dunno, 4 minutes left when we need the ball back); and until our special teams grows some onions and quits playing like a powder-puff girls team, then MAYBE we can win some games.

The schedule makers were also BRUTAL to the Falcons… the first 8 weeks of the year and we have to play all these dam* playoff teams? (Chicago, Philly, Tampa, Seattle, Green Bay, Indy AND New Orleans? My God, can we PLEASE have a Kansas City or St. Louis or Miami in there somewhere?) There are some softer games late in the year, but I doubt it wil matter. I made the prediction before the year: 9-7, miss the playoffs.

Atlanta will be 4-5 after a loss to the Saints on Nov. 13. They will rebound in December, but the NFC is fairly even and deep this year… the Packers, the Saints, the Giants, the Redskins, the Buccaneers, the Bears, and the Eagles should all be fighting for playoff spots. It will be tough for Atlanta to get in.

I feel good about the general direction of the team… but until we get some LEGITIMATE LINEMEN ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL and until we get some LEGITIMATE STOPPERS ON DEFENSE, NOT PRETENDERS LIKE DUNTA ROBINSON, the Falcons will struggle to achieve playoff success.

We need to get back to the punishing run game we had in 2008 and the ability to pull out some clutch wins like we did in 2010… otherwise, it’s going to be a long season for the Falcons.

Let’s face it : we stink this year.

Matt “King of The Dink” Ryan is pathetic. He’s got a serious case of Happy Feet, can’t throw downfield worth a darn, is too emotional, etc. Bad quarterback.

We had our chance last season and we blew it bigtime. It sucks b/c the Saints took advantage of their Dream Season and we flushed ours don the toilet. We won’t do a thing this season that’s for certain.

Mr. Blank has wanted to win the SB from day one, that hasn’t changed. I don’t question his dedication to the cause.

The issue as it has been for 45 years is blocking and tackling. Having the right players at the right positions. The people picking the players here have simply not been good enough. This team is not an upper echelon team and they won’t be until they start to exibit patience.

Julio Jones is a great add. The problem is what did you do with the rest of the draft? Sam Baker can’t play Left Tackle PERIOD!

They get Akeem Dent who as far as I can tell doesn’t play at all. They got more WR’s late last year that don’t really play. Some offensive linemen that aren’t good enough to play in the NFL and a punter who well to say something nice….he’s a great tackler.

This team does not resemble a team that could go deep into the playoffs without miracles happening.

They did some great stuff in this one late. FINALLY they found Roddy and Julio, but they couldn’t run the ball today.

The problem now, they need a new center, they need a left tackle, they need to upgrade Michael Turner in the near future, They have a #1 corner that better at hitting people than covering them.

Safeties are still young and play well sometimes and horrid other times.

It’s a team that wants to play dink and dunk passing/ smash mouth running in a vertical offense league.

The QB that they drafted is incapable of pushing the ball up field in the manner that the rest of the QB’s in the game can. At least that’s what he’s shown so far.

To answer the question . . . No, they are not. It was pretty darned obvious during the “meaningless” pre-season. The reason they are 1-2 instead of 0-3 is because Vick got a concussion in the Eagles game. A hard trutth that no one wants to admit, and very painful to say. Don’t know what happened to them. Has anyone checked Atlanta’s/Gerorgia’s water supply? This miasma in government, business, education, and now is sports is starting to worry me. The game was completely in the Falcons’ hands in the last quarter at 1st and goal at the 5, but 2 or 3 dropped passes and other goofs fixed that. Plus, Ryan got the hell beaten out of him the entire game. A great quarterback with no protection is just another quarterback in the NFL. At least we are seeing it early instead of at the eleventh hour, as with the Braves. Would someone please check the water supply?

How many teams that go 13-3 equal or better their performance the following year? Not many. This is a tougher schedule. And I still think this is probably the toughest division in football. And a lot of football left to be played. The Packers won the Super Bowl with a 10-6 record. It can be done. Dont throw the towel in on the season because 2 games are lost. Bears are a tough team. They were in the NFC Champ game last year. And we lost to a divisional rival on the road…not uncommon in the NFL. Its too early for this kind of talk. Now if they lose to the Seahawks and dont play better by end of October…that’s a cause for concern.

Today they didn’t. It was their’s to lose. 1st and goal at the 5 with a little over 4 minutes left. Can’t belive they couldn’t score in that situation. Lot’s to be concerned about. Real protection for Ryan must become Job One, or nothing else will matter. And thinking back to the 49’s during the Joe Montana era, a running back with good hands coming out of the backfield on passing routes would create a huge advantage for Ryan and the Falcons. Especially after the decision has been made not to give Turner the ball at all.

I think an awful lot has to do with the porosity of the offensive line. They are just not a unit, not blocking well, not protecting well, and not opening holes. The defense is actually playing pretty well. The offense is sucking pretty badly. Unimaginative play calling, porous line, uninspired running. If your QB has no time to move, and set and throw, you got what we got now. I think it’s time to have a closed door, come to Jesus meeting with these guys and really lay it out. We shouldn’t be losing like this, we should be 2-1, nothing less, and that includes playing like we were a good team against Da Bears. Can we beat the Seahawks, I’m not so sure. I’m damn sure, as of now, we get our asses handed to us by the Pack.

Bottom line is, our offensive line is really not getting the job done in pass or rush blocking. That may be contributing to Ryan looking like he has Happy Feet which is a very sad thing to see.

That said we should have had the lead at the end. The thing that will chew away at me is the play call on our last drive after the roughing the passer call when we had first and goal from the 5 yard line. I feel that was a situation where you bunch up and ram our 250 pound bowling ball at them 4 times if needed. Instead they went for a pass that led to a sack and in one play call we severely reduced our chances our chances of scoring a TD on 2nd and 3rd down and eliminated the possibility of going for it on 4th down.

That play call showed me that this team has completely lost the offensive identity that gave us 3 winning seasons in a row.

I would like to hear from the Falcons coaching staff about their thoughts on that first and goal call from the 5.

It’s too early to know where the Falcons are. Yes, they’ve struggled early, but let’s remember that there was no OTAs, very little training camp and we’re starting a rookie WR. I have no doubt the Falcons will be contenders when it’s all said and done. We’ve lost 2 road games against very good opponents (let’s not forget that the Bucs won 10 games last year and the Bears were in the NFC Championship Game).

Let’s get back to .500 against the Seaducks and take our chances against the Pack at home before we panic. If we somehow lose to the Seaducks, then i’ll panic, Braves style. 5 of the next 6 are infinitely winable.

Please Falcons, take my mind off the riduclous Braves!

This team is a disaster and I’ve officially begun the process of selling my Falcons memorabilia–and I have lots of it–online through Ebay and Amazon.com. There is hardly any coordination between the Falcons and they just have no firepower or drive on offense. You can’t win games like that.

We went through this with Vick, remember? The more things change with the Falcons, the more they stay the same.

The playoffs are a fantasy. At best, we’re looking at a 8-8 season, unfortunately. The only way the Falcons stand a chance of being an elite team is a whole new roster on offense. Am I the only person thinking a rebuild is already in order?

Its shameful these guys can no longer deliver the game for themselves, let alone the thousands of Atlanta fans who have believed in them, supported them and made excuses for them when they inexplicably collapsed.

For those of you deriding Ryan for seriously underthrowing Jones on that 50-yard pass (I also thought it was an underthrow watching it live) go to nfl.com and watch a replay. There is a deep safety in the middle of the field, and Matt gives a pump fake to the right to (most likely) try to get him away from Julio. Then he throws to Julio who is coming from the left hand side and drifting towards the middle of the field on his route. The reason Julio looks awkward catching the ball is that Matt is throwing it away from the middle of the field (where the deep safety is running) and towards the left numbers, which is wide open. Julio first looks over his right shoulder, and seeing the ball is actually further to the outside of the field he keeps turning and ends up facing Ryan as he makes the catch and falls. He never fully breaks stride, although he does slow down some as he’s turning around. Could the ball have been thrown a couple of yards further? Yes. But if it was, maybe Jones doesn’t catch it while he is re-adjusting. When a receiver is that wide open, it is better to underthrow than overthrow him — at least he can adjust to the underthrow. It was probably a deep post route and Matt made the decision to throw it more to the outside of the field to avoid the safety.

Like everybody on here, here’s a simple question. Why don’t the Falcons play every quarter of every game like they play the fourth quater of every game? If there’s some “football” answer to that — I’d like to hear it. Why not try to put up 40 points every game and see how that works out for you? To a man, every player and coach on this team says the exact same thing. The game will probably come down to the last play or last series. Why is that the mind think of this organization?? Why?? Why not bury people before half time?? Oh, viewers will tune out? The NFL is looking more and more like professional wrestling each and every day! The fans, who seem to care more than the players or the coaches, are the losers in this charade.

Why does every player and coach on the Falcons say, to a man, that they think the game, any game they play, will come down to the last play or series?? Why?? It is the mind think of this entire organization. Why?? What’s so wrong with burying a team by half time and then playing your back ups while resting your starters? Post 40 points a game and see how that works out for you! Blank should pay Sean Peyton 50 millions dollars a year to coach this team.

I suspect it will be all the Falcons can do to win 8 games this year. Poor coaching and poor playing was the answer yesterday. Falcons, stop acting like you’re the “it” team from 2010, and act like the up and comer team, like Detroit and Buffalo. Otherwise, this will be a long season. P.S. Mr. Arthur Blank, please stay off the sidelines during the game. It’s quit embarassing to see you, and although the players won’t say it, since you sign their paycheck, you’re a distraction. And, quite frankly, it makes the team look bad. Stay off the sideline until the final knee is taken in a Falcon win.

Right now the Falcons are just not a very good football team. They are one of the teams that maybe needed OTA’s. They are getting penalized at crucial times in the game. Matt Ryan is making bad decisions: For instance, if you have 4th and goal why wouldn’t you got to your bread and butter rather than a 5′7″ rookie blanketed by a 6′1″ safety. Who does that? Live and die with your go to receivers and give yourself a chance to win. The coaching staff see that the no huddle is working, but they use when they are down. Who wants to play comeback football all the time. The offensive line looks really bad and Matt Ryan is taking a David Carr beating right now. He looks very uncomfortable. The punter seems to be very unsure of how and where to punt the ball. The defense are not playing that bad, but they cannot get away from the mental mistakes. They do not put enough pressure on opposing QB’s. They are not scoring points at all and if you want to win, you have to score. They have to fire off on Seattle this weekend, because the PACKERS are headed to town the following week. I am a loyal FALCON fan, but they actually look bad right now. I don’t thnk that Arthur Blank will deal with these losses too much longer, before he start to question some of the staff.

The Vick infection has already taken hold in Philadelphia. And this one you can’t eradicate with penicillin (something MV7 knows a bit about, as I recall). First, with flashes of brilliance he lulls you into thinking you’re headed to the promised land. So much so that you trade away your very serviceable backup QB (94 QB rating so far in AZ) and give Vick a truck load of cash. Then, he plays well but gets hurt, and after a while starts to develop fumble-itis. Shortly thereafter, he is seen leaving the field surrounded by his trainer posse virtually every game. Then, he starts complaining about officiating and throwing his O-line under the bus. If left unchecked, this disease will eat away at your franchise, causing several years of crappy play and ultimate rebuilding/amputation. Philly, get yout while you are ahead…cut him now. They lose 3 or 4 more games then a run to the playoffs is outta reach too ! A 10-6 might slip em in there as wildcard but I doubt it. I think my wife said it best because a female can and does see things different than us men do.

She said, well, they going to get paid regardless of whether they win another game or not and as long as they know that, its just like Joe Blow going to work everyday

we were lucky last year. winning just about every game at the end. this year’s team is not lucky. Mike Mularkey is a dinosaur and needs to be fired. Yesterday in the first half we scored 3 points. Ryan was getting mauled. Our brilliant OC finally came to his senses and started throwing quick passes to the wide outs and quick slants over the middle to slow down the pass rush. Then we start moving the ball and actually scored a TD…..wow! Way to come thru in the clutch Roddy. McClure did you forget how to hike the freaking ball? The OL has forgotten how to block. TD definitely blew it by not resigning Big Harvey. Dunta Robinson reminds me of Chris Houston. And Bosher? Holy Jesus! TD you sure missed the boat on him. We ain’t no playoff team. That is for sure.

Go get Terrell Owens. Put him on opposite side of R. White. Move Julio to slot and let’s win some d___ football games. Ryan can only hold the ball for so long in pocket. What this tell me, receivers are not getting open fast enough.

Ryan, you need to look more at the checkdown. Also, instead of having one RB in the back with Ryan in I-formation, ATL needs to go with two backs in backfield, but both on left and right of Ryan.

offense is too predicitable. Need to get Rodgers in game and run screens and swing passes out of backfield. Waisting his talent just like we did with Norris. Whenever we miss pass on first down 90% of time next play is draw to Turner, and seldom works. We really miss Koenen. Pass plays need to be designed better. Look at all crossing routs etc by Saints and Packers. We really miss Babs in middle on defense. Hope he’s back soon. This is passing league and almost a sandlot league. Running is important, but not like it used to be. Colts have used the no huddle almost the whole game for years. Ryan could be better in it than regular offense. Need imagination especially in Red Zone.

Think about it, Brady, Brees, and Rodgers all get rid of the ball quickly. Brady uses tight ends and Welker, Brees uses crossing routes and so do Rodgers.

Also think about this..Ocho is not having big year, but Welker is. Brees uses his WR, but they go deep and have separation. Rodgers uses Jennings and TE mostly. What they have in common, quick release by QB and separation by route runners. This frustrates a defense! Maybe the league is a pass offense first to open up the run!

Abraham has it backwards. The Falcons are currently playing Falcon football, the Falcon football we’re used to seeing for the vast majority of the history of this franchise. The offensive line is a disaster. The only explosive plays you’re going to have when the middle of your offensive line is getting regularly blown up in the passing game are sack-fumbles. They need to try some of the backups on the offensive line; it’s not like they could be a lot worse.

I believe the Falcons need to change their pre season training procedures. I know they were handicapped by the player lockout, but why carry a large roster through preseason camp? There’s 20 to 25 prospects who have no chance to make the team> They take valuable time away from the coaching staff that could be used to sharpen and improve the basic fundamentals (blocking and tackling) and to fine tune the execution of the offensive and defensive schemes of those players who are most likely to dress for the first regular season game. . And, in recent years, the fourth and final exhibition game is a throwaway. It should be used to hone the starters for the first game of the season. This is the third year in a row that the Falcons have experienced subpar games at the start of the season. Cut the preseason roster as efficiently and quickly as you can Falcons! Be ready to play from the get go!

8:52 am

When people are talking about Ryan’s weak arm, are they watching the same game as the rest of us? Or is it that they just disregard any evidence to the contrary of their predisposed position. If I recall correctly, Ryan had several well-placed deep balls that were either dropped (Roddy White) or missed because a rookie looked over his wrong shoulder for the ball (Julio Jones). Also, those who want to over-analyze his decision-making….does he make mistakes…YES!!! Every human-being on the planet does. Even Brady threw 4 picks yesterday in their loss to the Bills. Ryan is not perfect, but despite the rantings of those who still have man-crushes on the oft-injured MV7, he is an excellent QB. This team is under-performing, and Mularkey is appropriately named for his play-calling, but as a “homer” and I wear that tag much more proudly than the ilk of those who would join the ranks of the bandwagon clan, I believe this team will get things headed in the right direction. Oh….and another thing….The beating that Ryan has taken during the first three games has revealed a lot about him in my estimation. He’s had some crappy line play in front of him, yet has refused to throw his O-line under the bus, and has displayed incredible toughness.

Especially when Smith and Dimitroff is not on the same page about scheme. The Falcons are sure paying a lot of money for Jones who doesn’t seam to have a starting roll on the Smith team . The play-calling was MISERABLE. Calling a reverse on a 3rd-and-2? Really? And why did always have to be pass-pass-pass on that drive that could have put the Falcons ahead? They had plenty of time on the clock to mix it up with running plays and could have kept Tampa off-balance. Matt Ryan is a very good quarterback, and showed it against Philly, but he needs help from the play-calling and running game to continue win games. He can’t do it all by himself.

Matt Ryan is TERRIFIED in the backfield….the first time he hears footsteps, he will throw the ball straight to the side-lines…which is the sign of a heartless leader. He is not a POCKET PASSER of any worth, and the Offensive line could very well be the reason partly. I am disgusted with the Offensive Linemen. They have NO PRIDE, NO GUTS!!!!! AlanFalcon hit the nail on the head. Our O-line, particularly Sam Baker, sucks. As a result, Ryan hears the footsteps and has developed a serious case of happy feet – no composure whatsover. Turnovers put all of the pressure on our defense, which spends far too much time on the field. Dimitroff mortgaged the future to being in Julio, but apparently forgot to tell Mularky, who either isnt able or willing to put together a play book to match. Great championship teams are built from the ground up, starting with the linemen, particularly the O-line. You can’t get to the big dance by mortgaging the future for one lone receiver if you can’t provide pass protection. This team is litered with gapping holes – Weems makes terrible decisions fielding punts, our punter can’t kick, Robinson and his CB’s get penalized for undisciplined play and late hits……what a mess.

How was this offense(Falcons) only barely able to make one Touchdown against the Bucs? It really doesn’t make sense(at least on paper), you can have as many pro bowl players possible but that doesn’t substitute for great heart… something has got to give, Yes, it’s still early, but we need some type of overhaul to shake things up a bit on this team (especially the offense)…

Don’t generalize about Saints fans and their lives. Keep football and real life separate.

Of course, as I say this, I think about how weak-minded the Falcons fan base has become. If the Falcons play out the rest of the season, they will be 8-8 or 9-7. You can’t run the no-huddle, because you need an every down back to run the no-huddle. Snelling and Turner are good for only 5 plays consecutively. If you ran a no-huddle all the time, it would allow you to score more, but how will the extra time on the field affect a defense that was trouble tackling. Look for a long season Dirty Birds, “Beast Mode”, as y’all like to call it, is coming next week.

He fired off the ball at the end and just got manhandled and tossed to the ground. Then he quit on the last play rather than do it again. Ray Edwards looks old and slow. And neither he or Dunta “Make a Play” Robinson needed to play in the preseason since they are so darn good. Give me a break.

On a side note, they need to fire these weenie announcers that always want to say defenders are leading with their head against a defenseless player. That guy was ready to cry over a clean hit on Freeman by William Moore. He led with his shoulder and Freeman was far from defenseless. Kudos to Brian Billick for calling the other announcer out on the spot. Freeman was far from defenseless and our guy led with the shoulder. It just so happens that the helmet is ALWAYS going to be close considering its freaking attached to the shoulders- not much you can do about that.

I’m sick of these announcers who’ve never worn a jock strap in their life crying about helmet to helmet hits when they have no idea what they’re talking about..

Surprisingly Mark you failed to mention on our inability to give Ryan time to throw the ball. If you look at Offensive Line coach Paul Boudreau’s career he doesn’t last very much past 2-3 years with any team so maybe it’s time for the Falcons to take a hard look at that coaching position.

“Let’s not fault the defense. It held the Bucs to 300 yards”……? Mark, the Bucs haven’t exactly been churning up the turf in any of their games……22nd in total yards, 21st in passing yards, 20th in rushing yards……thru 3 games. The Falcons Defense is ranked 22nd, and by the way, that was the NFL’s 24th ranked defense that we couldn’t move the ball on. Against the pass Falcons 22nd, Bux 23rd. Against the run Falcons 20th, Bux 23rd. The Falcons Offensive stats aren’t real pretty either. Falcons Offense: 19th in total yards, 18th passing, 19th rushing. I’ll bet the Bux were just shaking in their Pirate boots when the Dirty Birds touched down at Tampa International.

Roddy, those passes right to your hands are just too hard to catch buddy.

Going for it in the red zone, 4th and 3, 12:55 left in the game and Ryan tries to throw it to Jaquizz with Corey Lynch on him like dew in dixie. C’mon….you got pro bowl receivers, you got a pro bowl receiver gonna be in Jones, you got an option to throw a screen (which the Falcons STUPIDLY never do) and you try to throw it to the smallest guy on the field in the flat. Not smart football by Ryan, he obviously is playing rattled…….who can blame him.

And one last thing, Peter Falk style: Matt, next time the shotgun snap comes rolling toward you via the turf just fall on it like it’s a squeaking pig.

Anyone else vote for the Falcons to throw a screen pass every now and then?

The Falcons are like every other pro teams in Atlanta, cheap teams!!
Braves-Hawks-Falcons, they are all in the same bag!!
The Falcons had 6 coaches in 10 years:
Dan Reeves
Wade Phillips
Jim Mora
Bobby Petrino
Emmitt Thomas
Mike Smith

Green Bay 2 coaches in 10 years!!! Colts 2 coaches!! etc etc…

Relax. The Falcons will be alright. Roddy wasn’t perfect, but he has been darn near so in recent years, so he shouldn’t take so much of the brunt…just a little. O line needs some work for sure. All QBs need more than 1 second to get rid of the ball. They’ll get there. Have faith my brothers! And I agree, win or lose, it is hard to watch Arthur on the sidelines with his arms crossed. Poor draft that did not address the team needs. They needed defensive and offensive linemen help, not a wide receiver. If you can’t protect the QB the quality of wide receiver doesn’t matter. If you can’t defend the pass drafting a wide receiver is useless.

This organization plays to the level of its opponents. Michael Turner seems slow. I am beginning to they either let Ryan call the plays, or hire a new OC.

I thought the Philly game was their statement game, where they grew up and became an elite team. Wrong.

Still seems they are playing not to lose, instead of going on all cylinders and giving it all we have no offense every game.

Mental mistakes suddenly? Can’t happen.

Put up a 4 receiver set, run the no huddle and throw to Turner if the other 4 are covered.

Man this is frustrating.

IMHO Falcons need to run more 4 and 5 receiver sets getting Harry Douglas, Julio Jones and Jacquizz Rodgers more involved in offense. In the 4 receiver formation they’ed get one on one coverage in the secondary and I think both White and Jones are hard to cover one on one. Turner is great but too many times I’ve seen him break long runs only to be run down from behind where Rodgers might not be. Run more multiple back formations with both Turner and Rodgers in backfield. When set in 4 receiver sets try running from that formation. I also think Mullarkey is a dinosaur but most importantly the O-line has to protect Ryan better.

Reality Check-
After 3 games into the season Mike Smith has yet to fix what’s wrong with these Birds.
1. OL play is so awful you can’t consider the Falcons a play off caliber team.
2. DUMB Penalties and mistakes make this team an awful watch.
3. OC does not know how to deploy the weapons on his team. Let him go!
4. DC schemes don’t work. Simple case of “Wrong man for the job.”
5. MR is not an elite QB. This OL also exposed his lack of athletic ability.
6. The poorest tackling team in the league. Expected 5 yds loss turns into 8 yds gains.
7. The kicking game is absolutely atrocious.
8. Dunta Robinson, Matt Boscher, and Sam Baker are all BUST!!!
9. We played down to the Bucs level that’s why they kicked our butts.
10. Too much talent on this team to look this bad. Poor coaching!!!
The Falcons have become an anemic offense that can’t protect the QB, a Defense that can’t tackle, and special teams with no kicking game. Sprinkle penalties and mistakes on top of bland offensive plays and soft cheese defense and you have the recipe for a disastrous season. Who want to see another post season beat down any way. These Birds are can’t fly. It time for TD to call Mike Smith out, this team has play makers, WHY CAN’T THEY PLAY? We are not decimated by injuries nor can we blame the referee for bad calls, or bad weather. Just look in the mirror. You can’t fix all these problems just by playing Seattle next week. Even Seattle will make a game of it. Prediction: Falcons struggle (again) Seattle will look good against the Birds and keeps it close until late in the 4th qtr.

Just a couple thoughts – Our O-Line is playing terrible this year. No RB or QB can perform well without them doing their jobs. Call the Rams and tell them we want Harvey Dahl back and give them whatever they want for him. Either he’s the best OL in football or he is responsible for the lost chemistry. Correct me if I’m wrong, wasn’t he very aggressive and mean and played to the whistle and even after it sometimes? Secondly, why are we keeping that punter and kick-off rookie(Bosher) who kicks like he is in middle-school? His average is around 32yds per kick and most of his KO’s don’t even reach the end-zone? Hell, HS kickers out here in Gwinnett, kick to end end-zone and put around 40yds per kick!

Is anyone in the NFL interested in fixing the officiating in this league?
I didnt know it was acceptable to let a WR grab the facemask of a DB and shove him down the field 20 yards.

They dont call holding, period. (Either way)
They dont call Pass Interference (last offensive play of the first half should not have been a pick, that was PI all day long)

Also, someone needs to teach Mike Smith how to count. The 4th down call showed me he is not in control of his emotions on the sideline. Ive had that feeling about his challenges also, but yesterdays call to go for it on 4th down was absolutely dumb and purely emotional.

Has Corey Peters been cut yet? Did he actually make it to the team charter? Him and Sam Baker should carpool on the way to the unemployment office.

As a WR you are now allowed to grab a DB by the facemask and shove him 20 yds down field and the official will make sure the DB is not allowed to fight back.
As a RB you are also allowed to lead with your helmet, but Duanta is a terrible person for leading with his shoulder.

It begins and ends with a porous offensive line. Michael Turner held to 30 yards by the Bucs? Matt Ryan hurried or plain pancaked in the backfield how many times yesterday?

The offensive line is just that, offensive, and as long as that is the case this team’s “high powered” (or at least “high dollar”) offense will continue to fizzle and move backwards down the field. I don’t see Matt Ryan staying healthy through this season.

Still not happy bird watcher Mark. Fairweather fans fail to recognize trends. I have been a Falcon follower since the opening kickoff of their inaugrial contest in the 1960s. I have seen all the good, bad and ugly. Mostly ugly. I was alerted from within after Packer debacle in playoffs that this squad has serious chemistry problems. I felt like it was important to get back into W column. Even in meaningless preseason game. Did not happen. Disaster in Dome followed by four practice losses. Fans who do not know any better continued to smell roses and believe all fantasy press releases about how good Falcons are and will be for decades to come. I was definitely not buying any of this baloney. Matt Ryan has regressed tremendously since his rookie season. Michael Turner has lost two steps plus his will to hit the line with desire. Still do not know where our damn punter went. Defense is not perfect but will hold up its end in most battles. Hard not to surrender points when offense is doing Santa Claus impression all the time. Yes Matt, I am talking to you. Roddy White has regressed back into dropper of critical passes. Where the Hell is Brian Finneran? So the loss streak went to five. Delusional fans said the real Falcons would show up for regular season. Not to worry. Then the apparently real Falcons gave up in Illinois for a sixth straight setback. The Eagle home win could easily have been a loss. The Buc debacle could easily have been a victory but Falcons would have none of it. What it boils down to is that the defending NFC South champions have lost seven of the last eight times they have suited up. Not a trend? Interested in some prime swampland? Real cheap! Fans who have been with team since Rankin Smith days know what I say is true!

Everyone said last year that the Bucs only got to ten wins because of their easy schedule. There is a lot of truth to that, but what people don’t talk about is how the Falcons had practically the same schedule as the Bucs. Both teams played the same conferences, the only difference was a few games. Like the Falcons played the Eagles while Bucs played the Redskins.

The Falcons last year were not deserving of their 13-3 record as became painfully clear in the playoffs. They also aren’t deserving of the Super Bowl Contender talk early in this season. The Falcons last year were just a little better than the Bucs and they are closing the gap.

My feelings all along was that the Julio Jones trade was not appropriate for this team at this moment in time. They were not a dynamic receiving prospect away from the Super Bowl. This team needed multiple players on defense, and along the offensive line to continue its climb towards greatness. They do not have an identity right now, they abandon the run too soon, and when defenses are not pressing them because of large leads they are experiencing moderate success against looser coverages.

We have a good fundamental team, but we have weak points just like many other teams. Problem is we got too many of them, we got a little lucky last year, and the rest of the league knows it. Don’t get caught up in the hype, I’m a Falcon fan, but real. Our “O” line is not as strong as previous years, hopefully time, will tell, if they get that cohesiveness, others have had. I think Ryan’s confidence has waned abit, with all the Vick comparisons. Winning that game was great, but he has to win in the post season, before many will forget Vick. Still has not seen half the jsutification for Jones being a 1st round pick. Turner is in better shape, losing maye half a step. Our defense is medicore to good. Love Abe to death, he is it as far as superstars. Lofton is a good LB, maybe even Pro bowl , but it seems he does not mtoivate the de. Outside backs are backups on other teams. Secondary , is below average. everyone, myself included, love Grimes, but he is overmatched, Robinson is a waste of money. Our safeties take off on plays. Unfornatuately, the season, is started, so we are stuck with what we have. If our offensive can’t get it going soon, and keep our lame defense off the field, we are in for long season. “We are who we thought they are”. I sa look for a 7-9, or 8-8 season. I would like to be wrong.

O.K First off who seen that Sam Baker was a bust from the beginning ? A lot of us. They only drafted him because his dady was the coach of the Force. And they both suck. 2. Dunta Robinson, are you just a fluke ? Yes you are. Do you wear a mask and hold a gun when you get your paycheck ? you should. 3. Bosher , need I say more ? Mike Mularky is running scared upstairs and only pulls the brakes off the offense is when he gets desperate. Brian Van Goober , 2 words , Good Bye. The Bucs sat and waited knowing that Matt Ryan was hurt and we still had a chance to win the game and blew it. Playoffs , Super Bowl ???? Fat Chance with this group. The Buffalo Bills or Jacksonville Jaguars have a better chance than the Falcons. They are who we thought they were. I travel all over the world and this team is not taken serious by anybody out there. Good Luck , I will be working on my bike’s instead of watching the birds.

We saw two non-playoff teams trying their best to lose a divisional game yesterday.
The Falcons would have won that game by two touchdowns last year.
Matt Ryan needs to accept that the O-Line is not what it was last year – who knows why? Maybe it’s the new guy or McClure is rusty? – But Ryan has three games behind him, and if he doesn’t get rid of the ball faster, it’s on him now. And moving in (or out of) the pocket isn’t an option because he simply isn’t mobile. Period. Maybe while Ryan is watching all that film in the off-season, he could do some curls. He had a bigger arm in college than he does now.

Michael Turner can never be the problem – because as soon as you say he is, he comes home and puts up 115 yards in the GA Dome. For whatever reason, he just seems to see the holes and get to them better in the Dome. He struggles on the road, especially outdoors. There were a few times yesterday when he had a clear lane to the outside, but he punded it into the right side of the line for 2 yards or less.

D/C BVG is not the problem. He puts guys into position to make plays. He has gotten a lot of miles out of a 4-cylinder sedan that no one has ever heard of. When we get beat on a big play, which isn’t often, it’s usually because Dunta Robinson missed an assignment. And of course we need a big fat guy in the middle for first and second down. Grady Jackson stole my watch. Most of the rushing yards for Tampa came in the first half yesterday. BVG knows how to make adjustments.

So, what’s next?

Mike Mularkey tweaks the game plan and starts throwing the ball earlier. Earlier in the series and earlier in the game. Take the lead and then pound them with Turner. Roll the dice and trust that your defense will bail you out if it doesn’t work.
I know he wants to beat GB so badly that he has 80% of the playbook sealed awaiting the GB game. So, with that said, win in Seattle with the same old vanilla package. Turner will run for 140 yards and we will get two defensive scores. Then come back to the Dome and beat GB on Sunday night on NBC and it’s a whole new season.

Go Falcons!

Ryan has gotten by the last few years with a decent running game hiding the fact that he can’t make the long throws. Example is the Jones catch that should have been a touchdown if Ryan could throw it far enough. Roddy White is obviously overrated. Elite players don’t drop those passes especially with the game on the line.

I didn’t see the game but reading about it tells me the coaches learned nothing from the 2 previous games. Maybe they can’t solve the OL problems because they don’t have the talent. Dahl???

Ok, I haven’t played at the pro level but I’ve been watching for 50 years and what I’ve observed is something I’m sure most coaches would agree with and that is if you give me great talent on the OL and DL that I’ll win ball games even with average skill players. Atlanta has gone the other way, great skill players and average to subaverage OL and DL players. Peyton Manning and Tom Brady look average or worse when blitzers get to the quarterback about the same time the qb gets the ball from center. When a qb gets his head buried in the turf a few times, anyone will tell you there’s a good chance he’s not the same guy for the remainder of the game. Line play will determine whether the birds get to the playoffs. Second to that is how the game is called. The birds are predictable!!!

Let’s not panic the Falcons have Seattle next. Now if you can’t beat the Seahawks, well your’e in trouble. Mike Smith and coaching staff are going to have to figure out, how to approach this team moving forward. From play calling to special teams. This is not a diciplined football team. I don’t care what they do to fix the problem. But what I do know is if you don’t go deep in the playoffs. This team has failed.

Tommy

It’s not how many you win, it’s about getting hot during the playoffs. Last year we coasted into the playoffs and the Packers blindsided us. 1-2 is by no means the end of the world (the schedule is much easier the 2nd half) but even so, it’s already shaping up to be a fight for a playoff spot. 10-6 should do it (and the tiebreaker over the Eagles could be HUGE).

That said, my take is that the talent is getting beyond the capabilities of the coaching staff. Mularkey and Van Gorder are calling the EXACT same game plan they were using in 2008, when they nursed a 8-8 team into a surprise playoff appearance. But now, with a 4th-year quarterback, julio jones instead of michael jenkins, ray edwards instead of jamaal anderson, and sean weatherspoon instead of what was left of keith brooking, they are running the same formations and schemes. This team is too good to run 12 counter-rights a game and cover-2 on 3rd and long.

That said, something must be done on the line. 4 of 5 of them are returning. Other teams watch our game film and are having a field day blitzing. So, what does our offensive coordinator call??

a draw play??? nnope

screen pass?? nnope

a toss play to the long side of the field instead of straight into the sideline? nnope

The team can’t move the ball the first half, and then looks like the ‘85 dolphins in the final 10 minutes. That is poor game planning.

They’ll get it together, as long as they can avoid big injuries. The Saints have deeper structural and personnel problems then we do. Had we played the Texans and Bears at home and the Pack on the road, we’d be 2-1 too.

Lets be honest last year we could have had a much worse record! I know Matt Ryan can do the job but I believe he is afraid to screw up and that won’t go away until he gets so upset at himself that he doesn’t care what happens anymore! Our front O-Line is a major problem and we need to get bigger or Matt won’t live to see the end of this season. We are fast but not big and in this league I believe size is mort important. Yesterdays game is on the coaching staff as again our offense waits untillate in the game to start throwing downfield. We need street sense some thinking outside the box would really help this coaching staff and loosen up the players are playing way too tight for NFL.

“RYAN ISN’T RODGERS”

Will someone tell Mularkey that. I’ve said it over and over since the start of last year. This team wins off of time of possession. Matt Ryan is an ok type of QB. His accuracy is horrible. He rarely throws passes while the receiver is in stride. I agree Turner has lost his edge but the man has to get in a groove also. You can’t have him run the ball 2 plays then not allow him to run anymore until after ryan has thrown the ball 6 to 8 times. This O-line sucks, i don’t know why they continue to stick with these guys. Weems has been playing better and the defense didn’t play all that bad. They just stayed on the field too long.

No offensive line. It took White two years and a lot of breath holding before he became the receiver he is today. An offensive line would help Jones go deep and would help Turner who has been a no show. Our quarterback is getting killed. They will get better I think. Teams are doing something they saw in the Green Bay playoff game film. They are putting heat on Mattie Ice by driving over Baker. Tampa threw in a safety blitz once they figured out Mattie Ice will not go deep very often. Now we have to adjust to match their adjustments plus make up for the line talent we loss last year.

The reason why Ryan keeps getting hit because most teams can tell when the falcons are going to throw the ball and not run it. The falcons run the ball an average of 3 to 5 times per quarter and the o-line stance and pressure on the tips of their finger give it away. I can see that from my TV so i knonw the player can see it.

To all of the Matt Ryan haters, why don’t you stand up and let about 3 or 4 300lb men come tackle you and let’s see if you can throw the ball. If Matt has the time he is a great QB, maybe he isn’t a great runner but we hired him for his arm. Like someone said earlier, a QB is only as good as his Offensive line.

Will the Falcons ever win a championship? Next week at Seattle in a MUST WIN. I feel sorry for Matt Ryan with this O-Line. Baker is horrible this year, Blalock average, Mc Clure better than Hawley, (but a costly bad snap on a 3rd down in the shotgun) Reynolds is a questionable NFL starter, and Clabo looks average so far.

The D-line is not much better so far, especially with Babs hurt. Edwards has a fumble recovery vs Phi, but that is about it.

This team had too many holes to fill to be trading up to get Julio. Now we are left with no 1st and 4th round picks next year.

Owner, GM, Coach, Falcon Nation
Let’s stop fooling ourselves…period, the reason we don’t have a good passing game is the offensive Line. The line is garbage, especially Sam Baker. So stop the nonsense talk about the WR not getting open. Matt Ryan does not have a strong arm one, two he needs time to scan the field to be effective, but that can’t happen when the OL and Sam Baker’s 300lbs of mush is being pushed around by every DE in the league. Offensive play calling still sucks…..period, the bend but don’t break defense is garbage, it is now and always has been. Mike Smith has not evolved with the game, he either needs to get some new innovative coordinators or let all them go. I understand Mike is from the old school and believe in loyalty, but what comes first? The team and Falcon Nation or his personal emotions (a good question for Mr. Blank to ask Mr. Smith and the GM). If you think you’re not losing money by the Falcons playing so poorly early in the season after the media predicted them to make a deep run in the playoffs, don’t fool yourself (how often do you here the NFL Network or Sports Center talk about them) . There are going to be those who say it’s early in the season, but we just lost two NFC games, one a divisional game and that make a big difference especially when you have a couple of pretty good team in the NFC that are unbeaten and we still have to face. There are six slots, 4 division winners 2 wildcards….. Can our defense compete with the Saints that put up 40pts a game to our 12 pt average? If Green Bay wins the North will we have more wins than Detroit or vice versa. Will we have more wins in January than the Eagles, Bears, Giants, Redskins, Dallas to snag the last wild card spot? It’s time to get real honest with this team and call it like we see it. This team is not even headed to the play offs if it does not win some pretty big games (i.e. Green Bay, Houston, N.O., Detroit) and all the so called easy games. It most likely is going to take 11 wins to make the wild card this year, can you pick 11 wins off the schedule, and we already have lost 2….

For that punter who said what he said down in Tampa. “Kickers are like horse manure. They’re all over the place.” That’s a quote from John McKay. Punters don’t win games. I always see these ignorant idiots that pretend to blog and all they’re doing is showing their ignorance. We lost a game yesterday. We lost two weeks ago on the road to a team that’s also subpar to this Falcons team. I see a lot of mistakes. Mistakes that are from lack of pure concentration. Most of this stems from the Lockout. This Falcons team will iron out it’s mistakes over the next couple of weeks. This rookie WR we went after is a rookie. Look at his play. That’s why Roddy White got the ball all day yesterday. When will the rookie figure it out? In 3 to 4 weeks. The rookie punter? same…. The defense will get better as the season progresses. If the Falcons were 1 and 5? Then scream. But 1 and 2? Then I see the Lions D line standing in front of our O line (whoa! Scary thought) and we’ve already dropped two games that I know everyone thought we would win. Are we being honest with ourselves?

Alot of haters on Matt Ryan (rightfully so since everyone is on his nuts after wins), but he is a good QB, there are not alot of QBs that can run an offense like he does on no huddle. It reminds me of Peyton Manning but let’s not get crazy he’s definitely not Peyton at this point in his career. It is becoming blatantly obvious that he is much better than Mularkey calling the offensive plays. Michael Turner’s best runs from the last few weeks were off Ryan’s calls in the no huddle. Here are the things I think we can do at no risk to help the team:
-Coach better to prevent penalties: we were tops last year in not getting penalized, this year we are somehow one of the worst teams
-Replace the punter: Bosher is a below average punter, there are tons of jobless punters that are servicable and won’t lose you games
-Replace Sam Baker: this guy is a complete bust, like Bosher, there has got to be a serviceable rookie or free agent that can replace him before Matt Ryan dies in the Georgia Dome, he has singlehandedly killed our offense

Just the other day Mr. Chuck Noll said we need to rid the NFL of the thug element (the Atlanta Falcons) in the game. On top of that we have management types and coaches on the team bad mouthing certain players (Mr. Brent Grimes is a rimpeexample.) when the management typesd and the coaches are not criticizes present day and past Falcon players we have some Falcon players trying to hurt players on other team. This is totally disgraceful. If I was the NFL Commissioner I would suspend a certain falcon player for his dirty hits both in 2010 and 2011. We worry about what players do at home. We should only be worried about how players play on the field. Anything they do off the field is no concern to anyone else. OK, someone help me with this. . .

The Falcons lost to the Bucs for the first time in their last six meetings. Five out of six against ANYONE in the NFL is an achievement. But all of the usual fair-weather fans are already jumping ship.

Meanwhile, the Dawgs–the kings of underachievement in local sports–have beaten the Florida Gators THREE TIMES in 22 years, and these same fans will make excuses for them until they’re six feet under in their official UGA red and black casket. . .

The problem around here stems from that fact that fans cannot distinguish between pro and college sports. 10-6 or 11-5 in the NFL–which is where the Birds will likely end up–is usually good enough for a shot at a championship. (Ask the Packers). The Falcons would look pretty good too if half their schedule was Vandy, Kentucky, Ole Miss and two 1-AA teams.

That all said, it would be nice if mike mularkey added the words ’screen pass’ to his vocabulary.

I have been saying this since Mike Smith and Mike Mularkey got here. When the Falcons stop running the ball, they lose every time. Since they got here, when the Falcons win they average 30.6 pass attempts, 34 run attempts, 0.7 TO, and 19 pts. When they lose, they average 39 pass, 23.8 rush, 1.88 TO, and 16.4 pts. Notice the difference? Every time they lose a game, they follow the same exact pattern: when they fall behind, they start to panic. They stop running the ball. They lose. The script was followed in their 2 playoff losses. They threw 69 times and ran 38 times, with 7 turnovers. You cannot tell me this is a coincidence. They are a running team. When they stop doing what they do best and try to be something they’re not, they lose every time.

Tom Brady threw 4 Interceptions and his team blew a 3 touchdown lead against a team they had beaten 15 times in a row and in dominating fashion.
Turnovers are how bad teams beat good teams.
through all those turnovers yesterday, the Falcons were still in position to win that game IF the head coach makes the correct call and takes points on 4th down inside the 10 when on the road.

I know we heard the same garbage from TB fans last year about how they shoulda woulda coulda…but I think this your O-line (with the exception of Baker) could start to get it together next week. Its still early in the season and Ive seen teams make the playoffs after appearing much more lifeless.

Go show us something in Seattle. Give us that 21-0 and piling on game we want to see.
Seattle is a great team to do it against.
I want to see an epic beatdown like the Falcons gave the 49ers and Raiders a couple years back under Mike Smith. Then, I want to see them learn to deal with that prosperity and have some carry over to the GB game.

Just a couple thoughts – OL not playing well(but everyone knows that), will they improve, no one knows really?Does not seem to have that chemistry or nastiness of last year. Go get Harvey Dahl back from Rams and give them anything they want for his return, He must have been All-World and the Falcons did not seem to know it. DL not putting enough pressure on opposing QB, maybe he gets better, but Edwards does not seem worth money we gave for him after 3 games. Folks, you can talk about QB, RB, WR all you want, but games are normally won at line of scrimmage(both sides)! Hate to say this about rookie, but Bosher needs to go now! 32 yd aver on punts and a number of KO’s not even reaching end-zone. Hell, we have better kickers(punts and FG) here in Gwinnett at the HS level!! Why are we keeping him, somebody please tell me. Thanks

The talent is there to win it all. We need to eliminate the mistakes and stop beating ourselves. Some teams are hurt more than others by not having OTA. The Falcons have not overcome the lack of OTA, but sooner rather than later they will gel and win this thing.

Play selection is killin’ us, and not finishing drives. It’s not that easy, I know. Point is get in the trenches for 5 quarters, you’ll definitely be ready for 4…talkin’ to the O Line here. TD, gotcha that Julio was somewhat necessary, but lookin’ at how we’ve been figured out lately, filling seams with solid blocking and running tires out any defense and softens things up for later in the game. Get some big ‘uns in the draft if you say you have a premier QB!…but I’m nobody. Just sayin’.

Another BIG problem the Falcons have on offense is the shotgun. When you have Michael Turner, why would you run the shotgun 38 times in a game? The Falcons ran the shotgun 38 times and gained 174 yards, 4.58 yds/play, 3 sacks, 2 turnovers, 5/13 on 3rd down, 0/1 on 4th down. They ran under center 30 times for 151 yards, 5.03 yds/play, 1 sack, 1 turnover. Notice I didn’t include a 3rd down stat. That’s because they ran the shotgun on EVERY 3rd down. If the Falcons run the shotgun 38 times a game all year, we won’t win another game. This is a running team. When you run the shotgun, it takes the running game completely out. The defense knows you are going to pass. All the linemen have to think about is getting to the quarterback. The safeties can forget about having to come up to stop the run. Now all they have to do is just cover the receivers. Matt Ryan will not last more than another 3 or 4 games with the kind of beating he’s taking. We all know if Ryan goes down our season is over. The best way to protect a quarterback is to run the ball. When you run the shotgun, there is no running game. I don’t understand why they even had Turner in the game when they ran the shotgun. There’s no point. He is not a good receiver, so don’t put him in the game on a shotgun play.

Good work Casey…I agree, this “explosive” crap is taking us away from our identity, which is conduct back breaking. clock killing drives. We led the league in 3rd down conversions last year because we had managable 3rd downs. Oh, and we were 13-3, so what do we do? Trade have the draft so we can get and explosive player and change our identity. Ryans YPA were low, but no reason to throw the baby out with the bath water. I think Smitty will right the ship.

[...] It’s not bad enough that Matty Ice got beaten to a pulp . It’s that these actions came at the hands of the Bucs, documents Mark Bradley. The Falcons spent three quarters letting an OK Tampa Bay team [...]

blank needs to put on some coaching clothes and go to the sideline late and get the players motivated! He can take down a big stack of c-notes and $20s and hand them out to the players for good plays to get them interested! $200 for a tackle, $500 for an INT, $300 for a sack $100 for a first down, $1,000 for a TD, $260 for a good catch, $420 for a bone crunching hit, $380 for a field goal….!

This will do the trick–the players love the green! Blank is the man!!

Look, I’m no troll. I go back with my Beloved Birds as far as Bartkowski. I absolutely despise the Saints and noone enjoys kicking their azzez as much as I do. The two hail marys in ‘78 were two of the sweetest victories I’ve ever been a part of.
But let’s be realistic. Our hate for other teams cannot or should not cloud reality. Those who compare Ryan to Brady, Brees, Manning, Rodgers or even Rivers are just plain stupid. Matty doesn’t have the experience, talent nor the quality of cast to perform on the same level those elite quarterbacks do although the Saints’ receivers, when examined carefully, appear to be all unknowns acquired quietly and to be nothing more than “average” players. Other than Marques Colston, none compare to Roddy White, Tony Gonzalez or even Harry Douglas.
I do think it’s fair to compare how our team compares with the Saints (because they’re our primary rival) in the last five, six years. Let’s examine it:
Five, six years ago or whenever that hurricane destroyed that city and the Saints nearly left New Orleans, that franchise was in shambles. We had Mike Vick and were a force and constant playoff contenders. What happens? Vick goes to jail, Petrino screws us so we pretty much have to start from scratch like the Saints.
The Saints hire Shawn Peyton in 2006 as coach and Mickey Loomis as GM. We bring in Mike Smith and Dimitroff a little later in 2007. Loomis and Peyton have built the Saints through free agency and the draft. We’ve tried trades and free agents that haven’t panned out. This year, to keep up with the Saints we’ve gone a different – and maybe lethal – route: mortgaging our foreseeable future for Julio Jones.
Look at what Loomis and Peyton do: They find Marques Colston in the eighth round of a draft four years ago. They draft Reggie Bush and after three, four years, realize what a mistake he was because the man is not an every-down, between-the-tackles running back. They milk him, win a Super Bowl with him as a vital cog using him in space, then they unload him to Miami for a couple of draft choices.
This year, look at what we do: Our primary acquistion is Julio Jones. We’re left without draft choices for the next three years. After we lose Vick and the Saints start from scratch, look at the quarterback pickups by both front offices. We select noodle arm Matt Ryan with a No. 1 pick and the Saints gamble on a broken-down Brees and they grab him after San Diego throws him on the scrap heap.
They strike gold with Brees because Loomis realized he was an experienced quarterback and got a bad deal in San Diego when the Chargers thought Philip Rivers was a safer bet with Brees’ shoulder being a big risk. Now, it’s a safe bet that Brees will wind up being a Hall-of-Famer after being a Super Bowl MVP-winning quarterback who they got for nothing and we use a No. 1 pick to get noodle arm Ryan. (by-the-way, ESPN released their quarterback rankings this morning: Brees is ranked fifth. Ryan is 24th – eighth from the bottom).
Now, let’s examine this past off season: We’ve discussed what Smith, Dimitroff and Co. have done. It’s not enough that we were blown out by Green Bay because our defensive secondary was helpless against Rodgers in the divisional round of the playoffs a few months ago.
We won the division by smoke and mirrors. That should have been a huge wake-up call to our front office. Anyone that didn’t realize that we desperately needed defensive help is delusional. Our problem isn’t the offense – it’s defense and our offensive line. That’s where we need help. So what do our brilliant coach and GM do? They put their heads together and decide to use up a chit-load of draft picks the next couple of years for Jones.
Now the Saints were upset at Seattle in the playoffs at the end of last season. We all – me included – are overjoyed that they’re the first team to lose to a team with a losing record in the playoffs.
But take a look at what they do in the offseason: They didn’t look for quick-fixes. New England doesn’t look for quick-fixes. Green Bay doesn’t look for a quick-fix. Those teams acquire draft choices, look for free agents and build through the draft.
The Saints find a way to pick up north-south running back Darren Sproles for virtually nothing from San Diego. So far, he’s been sensational for them. Their first-round draft choice is Mark Ingram who they’re slowly working into their offense and soon will be another huge weapon in their scheme. Now they have a three-headed monster in the backfield: Sproles, Ingram and Pierre Thomas.
They lose their best receiver in Marques Colston for a month with an injury but their depth (most of their receivers were acquired through free agency) allow them to maintain consistency. Look at what they have: Lance Moore (probably the best receiver in our division), Devery Henderson, Jimmy Graham , Robert Meachem, Courtney Roby, David Thomas and Adrian Arrington. Brees has an embarrassment of riches at his disposal. And they pick up a solid center in Olin Kreutz through free agency in the off season. They find guys the way the Patriots do. But how?
WHO THE HELL ARE THESE GUYS AND HOW DID THEY GET THEM???? WHERE IN THE WORLD DO DIMITROFF AND SMITH HAVE THEIR HEADS BURIED IN? WHAT DID THEY DO IN THE OFFSEASON? WHY CAN’T WE GET THESE KINDS OF GUYS?
I’ve been a season-ticket holder since 1975 and I’m tired of losing seasons or one-and-out playoff appearances.
Oh, I’ll leave pizzed and hope all you other guys are as angry as I am when I think of this: They got that dammm Brees at virtually the same time we got Ryan. – and they didn’t give up three years worth of draft choices or even have to trade for him!!! ….They got him the same time they hired Payton and we got Smith.
And all they’ve done since then is win a freakin Lombardi two years ago and we got humiliated by Rodgers and Green Bay last year – at home.
WHY DOESN’T ANYBODY SAY ANYTHING??? THEY’RE 2-1 AND WE’RE 1-2 AND THAT LIGHT I THOUGHT I WAS SEEING AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL IN THE OFF SEASON IS LOOKING MORE AND MORE LIKE A FREIGHT TRAIN NOW!!!
CHITTTTT!!!!!….CHITTTT!!!…..CHITTTT…

We’re now 1-2 and tied with Carolina for being the dregs of our division.
What’s going through the minds of Thomas Dimitroff and Mike Smith? Do they have amnesia? Did they forget what happened to us just about six months ago in our dome against the Packers?
Did they actually believe that drafting what they think is the second coming of Jerry Rice would resolve all of our problems on our offensive line and defensive backfield?
Did they forget what Rodgers did to us in just two quarters of the divisional playoff game in our house? Forty-two points in thirty minutes in the second and third quarters? I’m no football administrative genius but I do know that mortgaging our next four, five years of draft choices for a receiver won’t solve our problems.
YOU BUILD THROUGH THE DRAFT AND FREE AGENCY!
Look at the Steelers. Look at the Packers. Look at the Patriots. Even the last five years of the Saints since their new general manager Mickey Loomis and coach Sean Payton arrived.
You don’t see those teams give up their foreseeable futures for one player. On the contrary, that’s one of the ways they build. They give up a player that’s peaked for draft choices. A recent example: Reggie Bush. The Saints got what they thought were the best four, five years out of him before trading him to Miami for a couple of draft choices. Word is, the Dolphins have found out why the Saints were eager to get rid of him: He wasn’t or isn’t a north-south runner.
The Saints now have a three-headed monster in their backfield with Pierre Thomas, Mark Ingram and Darren Sproles. They used their first round pick to get Cameron Jordan and traded up to get Mark Ingram and somehow got Sproles, who so far has been nothing short of fabulous for them.
Marques Colston, if not the best, one of the best eighth-round draft choices in NFL history, went down at wide receiver and is out for a month. A tragedy? No problem. They have Jimmy Graham, David Thomas, Devery Henderson and Lance Moore – a possible All-Pro this year.
WHERE THE HELL DO THEY GET THESE GUYS??? WHY CAN’T WE DO THIS? WHAT ARE YOU DOING DIMITROFF AND SMITH? WHERE ARE OUR SCOUTS?
It’s an embarrassment of riches they have over there. Us? We’re just an embarrassment giving up a ton-load of draft choices for an unproven rookie receiver. Unproven at the professional level.
Now, along with Carolina, we’re the dregs of the division and it’s not going to get any better with ole Noodle Arm behind center and Smith and Mularky calling the shots offensively and Van Gorder defensively.
Going to be a loooong season for us Dirty Birds.
Anybody wanna buy my season tickets?

Everyone saw it last year, Tampa was gaining on Atlanta but didn’t know how to close the games, thus Atlanta won. The small window of opportunity has closed and Atlanta is the 3rd best team in their division. A lot of fans won’t admit that there’s no longer anymore upside to Matt Ryan, he is the best he will be. Carolina & Tampa QB’s have upside, Brees is a exercise freak and will push himself to improve…I can’t get a feel for Matty Ice.

I’m concerned, but the Falcons have achieved more than I believe their roster should have allowed for in the last three years. This year, they should have a good enough roster to be more dynamic, but I thought a 10-6 year might be coming that reflects the Falcons getting better but having less luck than in years past. At this point, they need to improve to reach that mark.

On Matty Ice, I know he isn’t a Peyton Manning, but he is the quality of QB most teams are still jealous of. The line needs to protect better, and I think Jacquizz Rodgers or some sort of speedy running back needs to be mixed in with the slow, methodical style Turner brings. Turner often goes through quiet periods that last more than half the game. At those times, let’s try a different running style.

excuse me people that actually made a little sense but most of the post im reading seem to be coming from a bunch of moron fans that dont know anything about big league football. to the man that says turner is losing it ….. your wrong! the offensive line has not played up to what weve come to know has they are not opening holes for turner or protecting ryan. its not just sam baker alone even though hes the worst falcon lineman by far, he struggles the get that needed forward push up front on the left where we have found so much success in the past we are not schematic enough offensively and have become easily predictable weve gotta find some plays for jaquizz rodgers as he is by far faster and more elusive than turner as well as a bigger threat to get to the edge. were waiting too late to run that no-huddle that just murders opponent’s pass rush and wares on the front seven if you noti e Turner s big yards games always come late in games as the opposing defense grows tired from a fast pace high octane offnsive scheme. on defense we should make hayden and sanders full time starters as their play helped us secure a win over the eagles and we must find a way to get more inside pressure on qbs as edwards and abraham are always a half a second late because qbs can step up into the pocket and deliver without the threat of an inside push hindering them . mike peterson should come back to start at weakside lb … the run defense looked alot hetter with him instead of nicholas. we need to come out firing outta the no huddle deep and mixing in turner runs with with a spread the ball around type of offense …. this is a team loaded enough to destroy any nfl playing football. the problem is that if ryan stays on his ass and we cant get a forward push in the run game our defense plays too many snaps and gets tired by the third quarter. its still early and this team is too good to write off theyll rebound. and rebound BIG. ……

Mr. Bradley, the Falcons only get “explosive” in desperate situations because Mularky is a timid coach. The Falcon’s exploded against Philly once Ryan went to no huddle and called his own plays…

Watch the Patriots and you never know what play they will call. Watch the Falcons and you know 90% of what they will do… 1st down: run Turner off tackle… throw for less than 5 yards… then have to throw for 1st down… repeat…

Don’t fire Mularky… deport him before he ruins any more football teams.
