Live from Tampa: Former punter says Falcons weren’t fun

Tampa — Michael Koenen used to punt for the Falcons. Now he works for Tampa Bay. Anwar Richardson of the Tampa Tribune asked Koenen to compare and contrast cities. In shocking revelations, Koenen declared that he prefers Florida oranges to Georgia peaches and that Atlanta has worse traffic.
Asked about Mike Smith, who coaches the Falcons, and Raheem Morris, who coaches the Buccaneers, Koenen said: “The atmosphere is way different … Up there, it’s a lot tighter. There is a little more nervous energy, but here it’s light-hearted and just fun energy.”
Wow. Who knew the coach who bears a passing resemblance to the comic/actor/author/musician Steve Martin wouldn’t be a wild and crazy guy?
Then again, Koenen can afford to crow — a bit. By way of a different comparison, he seems the greatest punter in 21st Century Falcons annals. Koenen left as a free agent and was lavished with a $19.5 million contract by the Bucs. Through two games, Koenen is seventh among NFL booters in yards per punt and third in net punting.
The Falcons, meanwhile, have deployed Matt Bosher, who enlivened last week’s festivities by punting out of bounds on his own 20.20-yard-line. (The Eagles would score to take a 10-point lead.) Bosher’s numbers: Next-to-last in yards per punt, 26th in net punting.
And now you’re asking: Do I, keen analyst, believe this game will be decided by punting, net or otherwise? No. I like the Falcons to win for a rather basic reason: They’re the better team. That said …
It has been raining for the past hour and the field is so wet nobody has ventured out to warm up. (Not even the punters.) This could be one of those slick-ball turnover-rich extravaganzas, which means: Don’t even bother trying to handicap it.

Here’s what I don’t get about Bosher — how do you just hand such an important job to a rookie without any real competitors in camp? The other punter in camp was cut very early, and Bosher had a crappy pre-season, so this is hardly surprise. Besides the terrible punting, this guy seems like the only kicker in the league not consistently reaching well into the end zone on kickoffs. Seems like the vaunted personnel team was asleep at the switch on this one…

Anyone else bothered by the lack of “explosiveness” by the Falcons and specifically Ryan.
I am by no means a Ryan hater like some who troll here, but wasn’t our offense supposed to be dynamic this year.
And didn’t we leverage a heck of a lot for a receiver that was supposed to open things up?
All I see are quick slants, and Ryan looking down where he’s going to throw all day.
It seems as if Gonzalez isnt open, the play is a bust.

Ok I get it, we can be a dink and dunk, grind it out team. But, haven’t we been drafting and making front office decisions based on being an “explosive” offensive team?
It seems there are mixed messages within the organization….
and what I am starting to get scared of is that Ryan is the weak link in the chain. Granted – the O line is bad, really bad. But then why have we opted to go for skills position, high octane players?
And while I appreciate our 13-3 season, let’s not forget we get beat down (epic beat down if I recall set an NFL record) in the playoffs.

J.J.M. — Ryan can throw the deep ball, and he can throw the quick slants, etc. He has an average NFL arm. The problem is, when the deep(er) ball needs to get there more on a line (as opposed to a high lob falling from the sky) or when the slant needs to be fired in there, he struggles.

Yeah that is my worry as well. I am not saying Ryan needs to be an elite qb for the falcons to be a solid team, but I am worried that he seems just as good today as he was when he stepped on the field day one. Which would be fine IF – we accepted that and quite drafting/signing guys for an “explosive” offense and started building for a dink and dunk (solid lines, good pass rush etc.)
Instead, we are told Ryan IS and elite, and he just needs the tools…. well, it looks to me that Ryan just simply is a dink and dunk QB with good game management skills.
Again, that is fine, and can in fact win you a lot of games. But we need a serious change in our philosophy and stop with the “stretch the field” idea.

I do not like Ryan, I know the line sucks but even if he gets all day he still just hits check downs. He hardly ever passes for more than 250 and he has a ton of weapons on offense. We have one of the best wide receivers, tight ends, reliable running back, and a great rookie wide receiver. Matt does not move around the pocket very well. He does not step up in the pocket or side step the rush. He gets extremely nervouse when the rush comes he starts tap dancing and patting the ball. He steps into the rush alot of times. On the fumble he just had he walked right into the rush.

Man this is going to be a long season. The Falcons aren’t even close to being half of the team that they were last year. The offense is awful the line can’t block, and the defense is just as bad. I support this team till the end but we need to get some folks that can freaking block. Who would have thought that Dahl would have meant so much to the line. Not even sure how much of this I can stomach.

They talk about ryan being this great ahtlete but i dont see it. He cant move in the pocket at all. No lateral movement skills. When he gets blitzed he gets sacked. When we blitzed we get side stepped. Why cant Ryan move to the right and left and step up in the pocket. His arm is below average for a NFL QB. I know our line sucks but when we played the bears he was holding the ball so long and creating those sacks and today he keeps stepping into the rush. He drive me crazy

Stafford and Rodgers? Matt Ryan has taken a beating several times and hasn’t missed too many games. Stafford can’t stay healthy. Rodgers finally started looking good last year. Before he hasn’t looked so good and was learning behind Brett Favre for 3-4 years. Matt Ryan hasn’t had that luxury.

The Falcons might as well be 30 pts down…this offense is struggling against one of the lowest-rated defenses in the league, the KO return team is the pits, and some of the players are getting flustered. Why were we cursed to be fans of Atlanta sports teams, lol. Having said that, I’m not at all surprised that the Falcons are losing this game after playing such an emotional game last week, but I am disturbed by the way the OL has frequently gotten man-handled in the first three games.

kerryb, Ryan has done a lot of good things in his career so far. That’s undeniable. But I’m starting to question his upside. He looks to me like an intelligent QB with limited physical skills. You may think it’s an insult to compare him to Stafford, but I’m not comparing them based on past accomplishments. I’m comparing them based on long-term upside, and as much as it pains me to say, I’d have to take Stafford just because he can do things that Ryan is physically incapable of.

I have lost all confidence in Matthew Ryan. The QB has continued to regress since his rookie season. His uneffort today is far worse than embarrassing. Two giveup fumbles plus an inrerception. No defense for such ineptitude. Overthrows wide open Tony Gonzalez in EZ. No excuse for such ineptitude. I wish to God the Falcons had kept Schaub. Now there is a QB with heart, guts and fire in his belly. Matty Lice has none of those attributes. Falcons look disorganized plus uninspired just as they did in Illinois. This all goes back to the draft. The other teams in our division addressed their needs. We addressed wants. There was no attention given to the defense or offensive line. If you’re not going to re-sign Harvey Dahl, then you have to make moves to reinforce your line. Nothing against Julio Jones, but we really didn’t have a need for a wide receiver. Our defense, on the other hand, clearly needs a ton of help, both on the line and in the secondary. Unfortunately, we’re handcuffed for a couple of years. They’re gonna be long ones.

Instead of Matt Ryan, we should all probably wish we still had Micahel Vick, who has a top 3 running back, the best No. 1, 2 and 3 receiver options in the league, the best secondary at his back to help when he goes off and turns the ball over, and one of the best coaches in the league at working with quarterbacks, yet the guy still can’t get it done.

At this early stage of the season, I would have to say that the Falcons right now are worse than last year in every phase of the game. Tampa should have put this game away by now. That’s the one thing we can hang our hopes on. Inconsistent offense and defense, too many turnovers, and lame kicking and return game. If they don’t get something figured out soon, they’re gonna take a serious step back this year.

Ryan’s pass protection does suck idiot but he also sucks moving the pocket against the Bears he gave them 3 or 4 sacks bc of his lack of lateral movement skills. He can not move around in the pocket. All you people dogging Matt Ryan are way off-base with your criticism. The only times he’s had time to throw the ball is when running the no-huddle and the Falcons have moved the ball well every time they’ve been in the no-huddle. He’s getting beat up the rest of the time. Nobody is criticizing the Falcons for failing to bring back Harvey Dahl; that’s their big mistake in my opinion. Ryan is getting clobbered!! We have arguably made improvements to both the defense and offense in the offseason. So, why do we look so much worse?? My answer is – the coaching. MM has killed Ryan’s development. Why do the sport pundits continue to give the Falcons so much respect when they are the worse team in the NFC this year .The Falcons didn’t improve from last year they have gotten worse. Ryan cant complete a 20 yard pass he does not have that arm strength. He is a short yard QB. He can drop the long ball in there but that intermediate passing game is what makes an offense explosive but ryan lacks that arm strength. Thats why i dont understand the draft of JJ. We need receivers that can make things happen in space bc ryan cant do the 15-25 yard passing game. He has never been able to do that. Matt Ryan needs a great defense, great offensive line, great rb, great wide outs to be great without those he will never win just watch the rest of the season.

This Atlanta team looks like so many of other Atlanta’s pro sports teams before it that just doesn’t have “it”. Teams like the Steelers, Packers, and Saints have it. Ryan has made plenty attempts down field for more than 20 yards. They are always inaccurate. They never seem to be plays where if the receiver would have done something different, he could have made the catch. They’re just inaccurate. He has made at least two of these to Gonzalez today, and every single time Gonzalez looks disappointed, like “I should have retired instead of dealing with this overrated noodle arm clown.” I feel bad for him.

Agreed..
Just because we point out weaknesses doesnt mean we dont love our team. Heck, one of the problems in ATL sports is we arent hard enough on our pro teams. And the Falcons have looked pretty bad here out of the gate. Especially the penalties. I can except we dont have the personnel at many positions, but the mental lapses are really troubling as that is usually a coaching issue.
