Live from Tampa: Former punter says Falcons weren’t fun

Tampa  — Michael Koenen used to punt for the Falcons. Now he works for Tampa Bay. Anwar Richardson of the Tampa Tribune asked Koenen to compare and contrast cities. In shocking revelations, Koenen declared that he prefers Florida oranges to Georgia peaches and that Atlanta has worse traffic.

Asked about Mike Smith, who coaches the Falcons, and Raheem Morris, who coaches the Buccaneers, Koenen said: “The atmosphere is way different … Up there, it’s a lot tighter. There is a little more nervous energy, but here it’s light-hearted and just fun energy.”

Wow. Who knew the coach who bears a passing resemblance to the comic/actor/author/musician Steve Martin wouldn’t be a wild and crazy guy?

Then again, Koenen can afford to crow — a bit. By way of a different comparison, he seems the greatest punter in 21st Century Falcons annals. Koenen left as a free agent and was lavished with a $19.5 million contract by the Bucs. Through two games, Koenen is seventh among NFL booters in yards per punt and third in net punting.

The Falcons, meanwhile, have deployed Matt Bosher, who enlivened last week’s festivities by punting out of bounds on his own 20.20-yard-line. (The Eagles would score to take a 10-point lead.) Bosher’s numbers: Next-to-last in yards per punt, 26th in net punting.

And now you’re asking: Do I, keen analyst, believe this game will be decided by punting, net or otherwise? No. I like the Falcons to win for a rather basic reason: They’re the better team. That said …

It has been raining for the past hour and the field is so wet nobody has ventured out to warm up. (Not even the punters.) This could be one of those slick-ball turnover-rich extravaganzas, which means: Don’t even bother trying to handicap it.

So I won’t. I’ll turn it over to you instead. I’ll be here all game, and I welcome your input. (Oh, and here’s an actual bit of pregame news: Falcons linebacker Stephen Nicholas is inactive; Mike Peterson starts in his place.) Join me, won’t you? See which punter walks off with bragging rights!

You can blame one play but in reality the O-LINE is the whole reason this team can’t get any steam going.

They in a nutshell are AWFUL.

This is an 8-8 team at best. We still have 2 vs. NO, 1 vs. TB, Detroit, GB, et.al. Lots of losses to better teams in there.

I’m a Dirty Bird til death do us part, but what we witnessed today was shameful. It was like “Space Jam” all over again, and our squad was playin’ like a bunch of pee-wee football toddlers. The penalties were excessive and down right ridiculous. Coach Smith and Co. should be ashamed of themselves for the performance today.

Well, congrats to Tampa. Great game for them.

Atlanta is not a well coached football team, evident by Corey Peters falling for the oldest trick in the book.

BVG should be fired. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS WATCH THE GD FOOTBALL. THAT”S IT

POORLY COACHED ATLANTA FALCONS

PERIOD. Took them 3.2 Quarters to even get started.

1-2 poor coaching, poor talent period. I want to hear them explain this horrible performance away in anything other than… well it’s just a tough NFC South game.

This one is on coaching mostly and on talent second.

This is an 8-8 team that will miss the playoffs.

poor talent, coordinators that can’t do it. 10 out of 12 quarters played in this segment of the season have been awful.

There’s a reason they call this city the graveyard of pro sports, folks. I believe the term used is “Losersville”–and for good reason. Almost a half-century of pro sports competion involving 5 teams (baseball, basketball, football, and two hockey), and only one world championship (’95 Braves) to show for it. No other city can “boast” that level of failure. Meanwhile, the obscenely overrated Falcons have just continued the Atlanta teams’ remarkable tradition of misery with a dismal/embarassing performance against lower tier TB Bucs.

Can’t just blame Roddy. The whole team lost this one by falling way behind in the first half. Defense hung in there but a lot of that was due to Tampa going conservative in the second half to protect the lead.

The O-line was much better in the second half . .. .or was it the quick throws? Yes that sack hurt in the end and passes dropped did not help. Falcs still had opps in the end and couldn’t get it done.

Bad passes, dropped passes, no OL, and finally a defensive lineman too stupid to not jump offsides when that’s exactly the other team’s plan. College teams get this right but not the Falcons? We are a joke.
