Georgia Tech is no longer untested, but it’s still undefeated

The biggest play: Roddy Jones down the sideline. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)

Georgia Tech hadn’t been tested, so it decided to test itself. It watched North Carolina score three second-half touchdowns and override a 14-point deficit, and suddenly serious stuff had arisen. The nation’s No. 25 team was tied at home, 7:22 to play.

“We thought we’d try to make a game a little more exciting,” Paul Johnson would say afterward, half-smiling but not nearly laughing. That said …

Johnson mightn’t have enjoyed every detail of this game — the two turnovers, the missed field-goal attempt, the never-ending run of lousy special-teams play, the dropped touchdown pass by the otherwise ascendant Stephen Hill, even his own loss of  fourth-and-1 nerve — but he had to be tickled by its outcome. A coach can’t know about his team until it’s forced to make plays for the express purpose of game-winning, and Johnson’s Jackets aced that exam.

Tied with 7:22 remaining, Tech led with 5:20 to go. Nice kickoff return, long Roddy Jones run down the sideline — shades of Sanford Stadium, November 2008 — and a Tevin Washington duck-in touchdown. No poor pitchouts or muffed catches here. Just two minutes of precision at the moment precision was required.

“I’m kind of glad it happened this way,” Hill said. “It shows the team it’s not going to be easy.”

Tech’s first three games had been varying degrees of days at the beach. It hadn’t trailed since the Independence Bowl. It hadn’t failed to lead 7-0 after its first snap. It was amassing silly numbers even by Johnson’s standards, but you knew full well that September wouldn’t pass without silliness yielding to cold reality. Reality arrived Saturday wearing powder blue.

North Carolina isn’t a great team, but it takes football seriously enough to have committed so many indiscretions it was impelled to vacate two years’ worth of victories. The Tar Heels seized the lead here, forcing Tech to react, and sure enough Tech scored 28 of the next 35 points. But then Al Groh’s defense, which had limited Carolina to 30 yards over the final 27 minutes of the first half, started to perform like the Tech D we’ve come to know and bemoan, and the usually roaring Tech offense wasn’t quite at high tide.

Which sounds strange, given that the Jackets finished with 35 points and 496 yards. But when you enter averaging 59.3 points and 675.3 yards, you’ve set an impossible standard. Matched finally against an opponent capable of punching back, Tech missed just enough chances to keep this close.

Said Johnson: “We’ll have to look at the tape and clean up the stuff we didn’t do great, and there’s a bunch of it.”

A bunch? Not really. But enough to render this the Jackets’ first close game of 2011. And even after the go-ahead-to-stay surge, Tech couldn’t run out the clock. Carolina got the ball and one final chance. Would Groh’s defenders go belly-up?

Nope. Tech halted the Heels before they could draw close enough to throw into the end zone. The defense incapable of making any plays last season made several this time — linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu had three sacks, including one on the game’s final snap — and that’s an upgrade.

“Thirty-five [points] is better than 28,” said Johnson, voicing a familiar and incontrovertible theme. “That’s what I was pleased with.”

There was, however, a single greater point: We’d seen how sleek Tech could look against token opposition, but against the Heels we saw it being forced to make plays — and then making them. No team scores 66 every given Saturday, and the rest of the schedule will resemble more of what we saw in Week 4 than in Weeks 1-3. This outcome should give the Jackets even deeper faith in themselves.

And there’s hay to be made in this conference. Nobody looks impregnable. The Jackets don’t play Florida State, and they’ll get Clemson and Virginia Tech here.

“Our goal is always to win the ACC championship,” Washington said, and a month ago those words might have sounded fanciful. Four victories later, this season bears the look of a real opportunity. Tech has positioned itself to do something, and that’s all you can reap from any September.

What a joke. Positioned itself to do something? Because they beat a bad North Carolina team and the Three Stooges?

Question: what do UGA and Georgia Tech have in common?
Answer: They are both undefeated against cupcakes, and they both have defeated the same number of good teams.

Good grief Mr. Bradley. Do you not have spell check or grammar check software? The story is OK but the proofreading leaves a bit to be desired. Regarding the game, if a team has an effective passing attack, it will be a long afternoon for Tech.

Good game, but not great. GT looked like the better team all day. It shouldn’t have been as close as the final score.

At least it the victory helps balance the sting out of watching Carlos Marmol hand the Cardinals a free win.

Mark – We left 18 points on the field today – by getting stopped on our first drive and having to stettle for a field goal – next, missing a field goal when we hould have gone in for a TD and third – Hill missing on a wide open deep pass. Our defense played some better but not great and it looked for awhile that the defense was goingto have to save us today because the offense wasn’t clicking. I think Coach Johnson has a lot to harp about to the players. We were fortunate to win today. I give Coach an “A” for play calling and managing the game – the players however get a “C”. I still think we have a lot of room to grow and threre are those verry teams you mentioned – Clemson and Virginia Tech – as well as others who will handle Tech if we don’t play better in all phases of the game.

I finally have figured out a good analogy! Tech football is sort of like Buford football. Their fans rave about how great they are and how they could beat anybody…but the truth is, they play a minor league schedule. Whenever they do play a big college team, they lose, usually embarrassingly so, and they forget about it. That is, until they win a few games in a row against nobodies…..and then you hear the championship talk start up again.

Well put, Mark. Over the years of watching a lot a college football , it seems like every team will have these types of games, usually after 2-3 really good games. The overall season can turn on the outcome of these “ugly games”. Is North Carolina a great team ? Certainly not. But they’ve got talent and they played hard and had a chance to win the game. You think they’re not kicking themselves for failing to stop Tech when the game was tied ? Overall, it was a good college game between conference rivals that were both undefeated. As a Tech fan, what’s not to like ? We got a QB who can run the offense with precision, including throwing the ball. We got all kinds of running backs. We got a big play WR. We got a young defense that plays hard and will continue to get better. We got a coach who hates to lose almost as much as us fans( or maybe even more). Does anyone remember the Gailey years ?? Opposing teams prepare for our offense all year, and we still hang 35 points and 500 yards of offense on them. Have they figured it out ?? When we can pass even a little, this offense is tough to stop. Those are all the good things I see from way up here in Wisconsin.

Bringing this blog back to the topic at hand, Tech didn’t look too bad. Few mistakes here and there (which is only imaginable when you start conference play). Special teams still scares me, but I was actually really impressed with the defense. The coverage was decent, and they never had a huge pass over the top. Jones is just a good receiver who is going to get his yards, as was their RB, who will be a stud at UNC. Nothing that can’t be looked over and corrected before we head out to Raleigh.

Good win today guys. Win is a win. Starting to be a great season!

Just for the UGA homers who are desperately looking for a face-saving out in the argument about academic requirements: Industrial Management at Tech is far more difficult than any degree program that any UGA student – athlete or otherwise – is enrolled in. I’m talking about heavy technical subjects like calculus, physics, chemistry, not the remedial studies fluff that UGA goons take (and usually fail – case study is Caleb King).

The football factory in Athens is a pathetic embarrassment to all Georgians.

And a note to the AJC: Ask Mark Richt about that 73.5% special admit rate (i.e., dumbasses who can barely read and who will spend four years in remedial studies) and the average SAT scores for his recruits. That should be an interesting answer.

I think it’s significant that Tech can make as many mistakes as they did today and still win. There may be better teams on the schedule, but Tech should play a better game.

Neither FSU nor Clemson looked that good today. Maryland looked horrible, and they beat Miami.

Don’t you Georgia fans think North Carolina is a significantly better team that Ole Miss? Aren’t you bothered by your team’s inability to score? Do you need to post here to feel better about your own team’s poor play?

Nice win today by GT. Though I’m a UGA grad, my son is a freshman at Tech now, so his mom and I left the red & black at home and went by B&N at Tech Square and geared up to show our support on Family Weekend. They even gladly took my UGA debit card for the $200 worth of merch, though I did get a few ribs from the locals in line behind me.

The Jackets looked really good offensively, did seem a little shaky on D. They’ll keep improving each week though…Paul Johnson really is a great coach. Thanksgiving weekend should be a good matchup. Other than that weekend I’ll be pulling for the Jackets (always have, btw, even when I was in school in Athens 30 years ago…most UGA GRADS (not casual fans, actual GRADS) have always had a healthy respect for Tech, despite what a lot of people might like to paint in these anonymous forums).

But, I have to say – it really is a odd to me that Tech doesn’t sell out all these games. Gorgeous Saturday, perfect weather, great environment, good matchup. This isn’t a knock or an insult, just an observation.

Part of the reason, IMO, is that Tech fandom is definitely a bit of an elitist club of sorts, dominated by actual grads and not casual local fans who probably don’t latch onto the team as easily as they do UGA.

But come on, there has to be more to it than that; a metro population with 4 million+ is there waiting to be drawn; how can the casual non-UGA and non-Tech grad in the ‘burbs, all these people who move here from elsewhere, NOT be aware that a great family college football experience is right there at their fingertips?

What am I missing? Is it as simple as a lack of marketing by the Tech Athletic department? Input from any long-time Tech people out there?

(I’m sure this may draw a few flames, but save it…I really don’t care. As noted above actual GRADS of UGA and Tech know the difference between healthy rivalry and anonymous internet tough talk stupidity. The latter of those two is meaningless to me).

My season tickets are used by family locally when I can’t get down there. It’s a great atmosphere for a game and yet we have difficulty selling out. I’ve never been worried about the elitist (if it exist) attitude, I just love college football. I’m sure I’m not the only one! The pre game is fantastic and I urge the folks locally to check it and and enjoy yourselves!

The defense and turnovers are going to cost us big sometime soon. When the offense puts up 35 points and over 500 yards of offense, we ought to comfortably register a win. Terribly disappointing to see us allow UNC to come back and tie the game after having them down by 14 at the end of the 3rd quarter. The strength of this team SHOULD be that when we get up by two scores late in the game, we need to be able to salt it away. Groh’s defense is showing some flashes, but way too inconsistent.

Clemson is looking very strong. We know that VT is going to be tough. Miami looked good last week, but layed a big egg this week.

This team has a chance for a special season if we can iron out the defensive issues and keep the turnovers to a minimum.

NCSt (next week’s opponent) got thrashed by Cincinnati today. Maryland (the following week) hasn’t looked that good other than the win over Miami. Virginia lost today. Miami lost to Kansas St. We should go into the UMiami game undefeated and could go into the Clemson game undefeated. Clemson and VT back-to-back looks really tough. Duke is putting up some impressive offensive stats with Cutcliffe at the helm. Then there’s UGA. Maybe 8-4?

Tech was lucky to get by with a win. North Caroline isn’t that good of team. If our defense doesn’t improve we are doom, what is going to happen against someone like Clemson. Florida State couldn’t stop them. They are going to kill us. Big Al better work on the defense now. I do not see any improvement over last year. If there is, WHERE!!! Where is the pass rush, our secondary sucks, N.C. passed at will. If we are lucky we should beat NC State,Maryland, Virginia,Duke, lose to Clemson, Va. Tech, Miami, and as usual Georgia. Year of the dog? LOL, more like the year they can Mark Richt. Best of luck rear end sniffers… NOT! You haven’t beat anyone yet. LOL, Carolina almost lost to Navy.

Before you shout lack of class, please review almost all the post your fans have put on the GT sites the past 10 years. What goes around comes around and you assholes are due. Before you peg me as a sore loser GT fan, let me clue you in. I went to GT and got a BEE back in the early 80’s. After graduation I lived in Woodstock, Georgia for 11 years and my next door neighbor was a Georgia alum and hardcore fan. That said, he was one of the best guys I have ever met, bar none. After his wife died young from cancer, he offered to take me to a UGA – GT game and let me sit with him in the expensive seats. Everytime he introduced me to one of his UGA buds, I said hello, held out my hand, and to my amazement, everyone of them put their hands in their pockets and turned away and walked off. I’m sorry people but this is just damned rude behavior. I was born and raised in South Carolina and I do get the rivalry but this just speaks to extremely bad manners. I now live in Florida but I understand my former neighbor is now a well love high school football coach in Georgia.

As an aside to this, back in ‘82 I took a date to a UGA game in Athens and as we were walking to the game a carload of drunk UGA fans yelled the worst obscenities at us I have ever heard. As they were disappearing down the street, an older (I would guess mid 50’s) UGA alumnus and his wife went out of their way to cross the street and apologize to us for that kind of rude behavior and wish us well during the game and our stay in Athens. I’m glad to know there is still a degree of class on both sides of this long rivalry.

The moral of this post is there is obviously hope for us all.

Go Jackets and THWG (on game day).

September 24th, 2011
10:47 pm

Just an opinion but Techs attendance issue is rooted in the demographic of its student body over the last few decades. We attract a lot of out of state and international scholars. This is good for the academic side of things but many of these students do not stay in the Atlanta area after graduation and thus aren’t in the market for attending games. Also many of Tech”s international students do not come from cultures that hold American football in high regard. It’s my contention that that Tech could do a great deal to drum up more interest in the school to potential Georgia students. This could be done by not only marketing the Institute but also marketing the advantage of getting an engineering, technical or management degree to Ga high school students. In addition football traditions such as the Ramblin Wreck Parade need to be rejuvenated and marketed to the community. D Rad seems to be taking marketing of the Tech brand more seriously than past ADs All this said nothing fills seats like wining !

Just an aside, does anybody have any opinions regarding what damage Joe Pettit and David Braine did to the football program. Petit with his opinion that an academic institution of high standards need not be bothered with athletics and Braine with his opinions that we could not have a first class football program and should be content with less than first tier!

Rwreck77, Petit wasn’t the first Tech president in history to have that attitude, but Tech survived and thrived. Braine, however, is one of a kind. I don’t know that he hurt the program, but he certainly hurt the perception. Good riddance to both. Rwreck77, can you answer this for me? In the past several years, the students filled their sections for the big games, although not so much for others, Well, today was a BIG game, and I think there were less students there today than there were for the WC game. I was stunned and appalled that the student sections never filled up.

This game is pretty much what I expected out of this team – basically that if we get anything out of the defense, we are going to win 90% of the time. The offense played well today but left at least 13 points out there (missed FG, turnover inside the 10, and the dropped TD), but because the defense pitched in today, we won.

This offense is something to watch, though. I’ll never understand why more teams don’t run it.

@George Stein, Bib Davie addessed that today during the game. His take was that the offense wasn’t “fresh” or “up to date” for most fan bases that look at the spread offense of FL or Oregon and it isn’t “sexy”. He is big advocate of the offense, he was just saying publicly what others have voiced. If Tech continues to be sucessful with it I suspect tha attitude will change. After all, in my mind it’s an easier offense to recruit for at the skill positions.

It’s an offense that requires players of which there is ample supply, OJF. I think that’s the big trick of the system. Well, that and the fact that our coach is simply one of the ten best in the business.

George, here in TN a lot of high schools are running a variation of the wing t and as we know at the a back position an athlete 5′9 to 6′ is close to ideal. Those kind of backs are all around the southeast. For some unknown reason people still seem to think this offense is 3 yards at a clip. That’s why I say of tech continues to run it like they have it will change a lot of minds.

It was an ugly win, but we’ll take it. Congrats to the team for hanging tough.

Still gave the NC QB way too much time to make pass completions. D Line still needs to toughen up. Have bigger teams to play.

What’s with the 14 yard or so punt? Don’t we ever practice punting, I know we don’t normally do it too often, but it is still very important.

Nice to see Stephen Hill starting to show his potential, but also Tevin making descent passes.

Orwin is tough in the open field, good job, could have been better if we had not missed some blocks. O line did much better than I thought, but they need to toughen up as well. Need to protect Tevin better.

Like I said at the beginning, it was an ugly win, and should give the team a good bit to think about and to knock out any feelings of invincibility they may have had.

Again congrats, on a win, we’ll take it!! Time to get after NC State.

Not to metion we had to beat UNC AND the refs.
Worse call I’ve ever seen on the ‘roughing’ for ‘helmet’ contact giving UNC red-zone possession for a defense-deflating TD. When you lower your shoulder and hit the receiver with the shoulder pad first and then the helmet follows naturally (as the re-play clearly showed) and knock the receiver on his backside, it’s FOOTBALL for gosh sakes! This ain’t falg-ball. And the bad spots all day long (I was on the 50 yd line about 25 rows up, so had a good look at them) – well, I hope the refs made it back home to Chapel Hill last night. And to the side judge who made that horrible call – a call that couldn’t legally be ‘reviewed’ – I hope you could sleep last night, I really do. Because we West Stands Tech-folk have a bit of class and honor. You, sir, do not. You could have picked up the flag and admitted the error. You didn’t.
But the ‘W’ over-rides all that.
Great game – now gotta go and treat the sunburned face and arms…

Congratulations to Tech on a big win against a quality opponent. UNC is not a great team, and they have an interim coach, but they have some talent–especially on defense. So scoring 35 points on them and racking up 500 yards of offense is nothing to sneeze at.

Tech is an improved team and will get to 7-0. Their schedule is very favorable. The two big ACC tests will be against Virginia Tech ( a probable loss) and Clemson ( a toss-up). I would not be surprised at all to see the Jackets at 10-1 going into the season finale against Georgia. That game should be very interesting–an emergingly solid Georgia defense against a prolific, clicking-on-all-cylinders Tech offense, and a talented (but Bobo-led) Georgia offense against a somewhat porous Tech defense. Turnovers and special teams could well decide the outcome of that game.

Again, congrats on the win. Y’all deserve your ranking.

I thought Cooper Taylor caught a bad H2H call couple years ago but that call Sat against Sweeting was equally as bad. Too bad the refs cannot use the replay to correct those type calls.

Hey ramblingbuzz… that was my point exactly. Neither team has beaten anybody.

And by the way, I got my bachelors degree at UGA and my masters at Tech. I cheer for both, except when they play each other. I just get mystified when writers (even the ones I like) draw such far reaching conclusions from games in September.

heeldawg, it’s nice to see a uga poster who can write in complete sentences. Both Tech and uga did what they needed to do yesterday and won. Fans of both teams should take solace in that instead of trolling each others blogs with silly comments.

That was a good North Carolina team. They had Lots of talent on the field, young but very talented. Bernard the running back is as good as any freshman in the country. They need a big play receiver and they are going to hurt somebody. The coaching was very clever too; a little lacking in the fourth quarter running out of timeouts but this is a sleeper team that will beat someone in the ACC that will help Tech this year.

I love Johnson. He is what is good about football. You take your five star uncoachable players and he will take his one star humble player and beat you. Not all the time but enough to give you hope. He does it betting somewhere in a game your superstar is going to break mentally. It seems the better ones break more that the one that have to think to keep up. North Carolina had a little more talent than Tech and certainly not the cockiness of some teams we will see this year. If they had been cocky, Tech would have beaten them worse. Rogue teams don’t play like North Carolina, very disciplined and a fine representative of their university.

UNC represented their university very well. If these are the rogue teams the NCAA are trying to control I am not sure of the service the offer. If this team had been a little more cocky Johnson would have beaten them by 40 points. This team will beat someone this year that will help Tech win the ACC title.

Simply put…IMHO this Tech team can/will go as far as the defense (& kicking game) takes them. I believe with the emergence of a passing attack, the offense is pretty much a given at this point. I’m sure there are teams that can slow it down, but if the defense can hold up its end of the bargain, we can have a really good year. Go Jackets!!

yearofthedawg- You actually consider Ole Miss a good team. They lost to Vandy 30-7 for crying out loud. The bottom line is the dawgs haven’t beaten a good team. The Jackets beat a top 25 team. We are 4-0 and have one of the most explosive offenses in the Nation. Our defense is improving and the last time we started the season 4-0 we won the National Championship. The only team we didn’t beat that year was North Carolina, we tied them. The dawgs are a team that is trending downward. This is the year you lose to both Vandy and Kentucky in your own conference. The Jackets will hand a Half Dollar on you this year.

yearofthedog – September in football is like mutual funds in investment: Past performance is no guarantee of future returns, but it can be used as a predictor. Teams that are playing poorly in September rarely perform well in November – - especially against teams that are performing well in September.
I see Maryland got stomped at home by that powerhouse Temple, NCState got whipped by UC, UVA lost at home to USM, and Miami lost at home to Kansas State. The ACC did not provide much support for those claiming it is a good football conference.

Dawg fan Here. This Tech team is surprising a lot of us. The pundits had told us this team without Nesbitt and a stout D would struggle. Just the opposite. The creation of the forward pass in this offense has made this team more dangerous, and the D is better, but not good enough yet to stop a real good ball club IMO. This team has a chance to win 10,maybe 11 games, including my very disappointing Dawgs. Congrats on the win and I feel this team will get better. Ouch for a Dawg fan.

DanRad is a Genius for hiring Paul Johnson. While the dawgs recruit better players who could never survive the curriculum at Tech whenever they managed to stay out of jail, we have the better coach. Furthermore, as Bobby Dodd said, “We get the smart ones.” So we definitely can beat them if we want to bad enough. Paul is1 & 2 against the dawgs, beat their pre-season #1 team and lost one of the games only because the thugs deliberately injured Nesbitt as they tried to do the previous year.

I have a hard time believing that Tech would have lost to a team that Vandy blew out. Plus, i’m not sure South Carolina would bet us after that showing against Navy. Boise would probably beat us pretty good though. We would be 2-2 at worst.

As to the strength of our schedule, I don’t see anyone saying it is tough. That is beyond the team’s control to begin with. And it’s not who we’ve been. It’s how we’ve beaten them. Even against weaker teams last year, we executed poorly at times and our defense was poor. This year, we have put up record setting numbers on offense with a clutch defense.

And for attendance, I’m sorry that a degree from Tech will take someone out of the Cesspool of the South.

Great victory for Tech as I have learned to appreciate any ‘W’ with Tech. The offense still looks like it can score at any time though the margin for error seems to be small. The ‘D’ needs work, but is is looking better than last year and has some trully talented atheletes at some spots. I like the extra pressure package, as we never seem to stop the other team when we hang back anyway. So send ‘em!

My one nagging concern was PJ not going for it on 4th down in at least 3 cases where it looked like the best choice to me. On the three I am remembering, the results were a made field goal, a missed field goal, and an 18 yard punt – a net of 3 points. If we had tried on all 3 occasions and succeeded only once or twice I believe we would have had 10-14 more points. If we fail all 3 times we only lose 3 points and leave them backed up further than a kickoff would. IMHO, we should always go for it if we are across midfield and need less than 5 yards, as our defense is not good enough to keep giving the other team the ball.

I saw somebody talking about possible win loss records at the end of the season. At best I see Georgia going 7-4. It is not a stretch that they could go 6-5 or even 5-6. Tech could easily go 9-3. If they tighten things up I do believe they can beat Clemson and VT. Tech has a great chance to play for the ACC Championship this year.
