Live from Tech-UNC: Will first-play lightning strike yet again?

I’m not in the habit of constructing game plans — I would never ever venture to give highly paid coaches any advice, heh heh — but I offer one piece of advice for North Carolina’s Everett Withers:
On the first Georgia Tech snap, have your men back up 30 yards.
The way I see it, it’s better to yield a chunk of yardage that a touchdown.
As we know, Tech has scored on its first play of every game this season, which is about to conclude its first month. Against Western Carolina, it was a 5-yard toss sweep. (Turnover set it up.) Against Middle Tennessee, it was a 73-yard touchdown pass. Against Kansas, it was the 95-yard counter by Orwin Smith.
Aggregate time of possession on Tech’s first series of Games 1-3: Thirty-four seconds.
Aggregate number of points on Tech’s first series of Games 1-3: Twenty-one.
Today’s titanic tilt comes billed as Tech’s first test, which it is, kind of. But Carolina isn’t exactly a convincing 3-0. It overrode five turnovers in Week 2 to beat Rutgers, and in Week 3 it was outgained by Virginia, which has won one conference game in two seasons. (Both games were in Chapel Hill, FYI.)
I like Tech by at least 10 points today — the Vegas line is GT by a TD — but I offer this caveat: Even if the Tar Heels win on the scoreboard, there’s no guarantee it’ll stick. As you’ve doubtless heard, Carolina is in the habit of forfeiting victories.
On that cheery note, the floor is again open for questions, comments and thoughts on the choking Braves. (What’s that? They’re three games up? Never mind.) I’ll be here until the last touchdown is scored, and I welcome your company. And I thank you, as ever, in advance.

The one series of plays we have not seen (that we did see from Hawaii and Ga. So.) was the trickeration plays involving the B-back flea-flicker and the A-back option pass. I expect to see one or both of those against UGA.

If UGA had played Yech’s schedule and won those games….there would be a collective yawn by MB, JS, the ajc sports dept. and Yech fans. But the Yech O-Jackets Joke by Coke beats Middle Tenn. St., Kansas, and the mighty Western Carolina and they are ranked & here their is the thought are they for real. Giving up 22 pts. per game vs those football powers is not too good either.

I don’t miss Gailey or any of his players. GT is leading the nation in several offensive categories…something we never accomplished under Gailey. Whew! I’ll take the win but it was exhausting!!!! Offense did pretty well but had a few mistakes that kept NC in the game (fumble within the 5 and Hill’s drop). Defense and special teams still make every game interesting to say the least!

OK, couple of things we need to work on for next week:
1. We need to be a 4-DOWN football team again. I’ve rarely seen CPJ *not* go for a single 4th down in the entire game, like he did this time. We went for it even in 3 blowouts previously. And that flexbone-to-wishbone-conversion-to-draw-them-offsides trick is getting old, and burns precious TO’s.
2. O. Smith is a great runner, but needs to block better on the perimeter. A few of Roddy’s runs got busted because of that. Roddy blocks great for Smith, now he’s gotta return the favor.
3. Better pass rush by our defense this game, but Renner is young and so the 6 sacks we got had a lot to do with his inexperience. Secondary is improving, but missed tackles need to be taken care of, and overall pass defense is still suspect.
4. We’re supposed to be a bend-don’t-break defense. I didn’t see that in the second half. Unlike last week, our D came out worse after the break, and kept giving up big chunks of yardage and 2 minute TD drives. Gotta get better.
4. FIX THE KICKING GAME. Missed chip-shot field goal, and not a single kickoff to the endzone => trouble later on. Remember, Scott Blair was a crucial factor in both our victories over Clemson in 2009. In the ACCCG, he put up a bunch of field goals beyond 40 yards. (Although there is some consolation in the fact that he was not that great in his sophomore season either, just like J. Moore)
5. I really hope Stephen Hill is not injured. I’m not as bothered about the dropped TD pass, as I am about his well-being. He’s the guy that keeps defenses honest, and makes great blocks too. Can’t lose him now, just as we’re entering conference play. Pulling a hammy usually takes a couple days to heal, let’s hope it isn’t more serious than that.

GT, “Thank God” for Tech…and thanks for the Navy, SC reminder. My boys are always able to beat the Techies…and that will save my job this year! Gimmick offenses don’t beat us…at least when run by 2 and 3 star players. See you in November, tell Paul we can meet for dinner after the game. Of course UGA has better attendance sheiet brain UGA fans… UGA is a much bigger school that is much less selective of its student populations. Also, many more GT professional get top paying jobs out of state compared to UGA – With a UGA diploma, most are destined to stay put in GA with very little upside – the good news is that there is always UGA football….even though it is on the skids.
What else is there to do in Athens? Let’s go to the game! Plenty of parking in the poo-poo pastures.
