At Georgia Tech, the spread option has sprouted more options

Ninety-five yards and a cloud of dust. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)

Ninety-five yards and a cloud of dust. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)

We know Paul Johnson’s offense, right? A-backs go in motion. B-back gets the bulk of the carries. Quarterback throws passes that can’t be caught by man or bird.

OK, scratch that. We knew Paul Johnson’s offense. But the spread option as currently deployed by Georgia Tech is forcing us to reassess.

Option football is based on the triple option, wherein a quarterback keeps the ball and runs himself, hands it to the back bursting up the middle or pitches it to a man on the flank. With Joshua Nesbitt as on-field administrator, options were essentially reduced to two: He’d keep the ball or hand it to his up-the-gut B-back.

In 2009, Nesbitt and B-back Jonathan Dwyer carried 514 times; the top four A-backs carried 181 times. Last season Nesbitt and backup quarterback Tevin Washington — Nesbitt broke his arm in November, you’ll recall — and B-back Anthony Allen rushed 512 times; the top three A-backs rushed 151 times.

It’s not as if that way was a bust. In its first three seasons under Johnson, Tech finished fourth, second and first among FBS schools in rushing. But that was a different sort of rushing, and here’s how you can tell: The B-back has always been the featured ballcarrier in Johnson’s offense — Dwyer had consecutive 1,300-yard seasons, and Allen topped 1,200 last year — but in 2011 the starting B-back hasn’t yet had a 100-yard game. David Sims has carried 30 times, which matches the number of carries allotted to the A-back crew of Orwin Smith, Embry Peeples and Roddy Jones.

Granted, this could be a function of opposition. Western Carolina, Middle Tennessee and Kansas might not have had anybody capable of defending the perimeter. It could also be that, in Washington, Tech has a quarterback whose favored option isn’t to run it himself.

This isn’t a knock on Nesbitt. He was a tremendous college player who would take any dare. But Washington isn’t as powerful as Nesbitt, and the new man is less apt to carry four defenders five yards for a needed first down. When in doubt, Nesbitt trusted himself to make a play. Washington seems to trust his mates a bit more.

As a consequence, we’re seeing a rushing attack predicated less on power than on speed and deception, and the results have been breathtaking. (Indeed, Tech has trotted out a T-shirt bearing the pertinent numbers from the Jackets’ destruction of Kansas.) It’s tempting to call this a true triple option, except that Washington has added a viable fourth way.

The forward pass is no longer a forlorn hope. Nesbitt left Tech having completed 43.1 percent of his passes as a starting quarterback, and without Demaryius Thomas to outfight defenders that percentage would have been far worse. Washington completed four passes against Kansas — for a total of 164 yards.

The Jayhawks cheated toward the line to try to stop the run, and the A-backs ran past them. And — key difference — Washington hit them in stride. Said Johnson: “Those are the plays we haven’t completed the past couple of years. He’s throwing them where they can catch them. That’s the idea.”

Well, yes. And now a defense has to defend not only the keep and the handoff, but the pitch and the throw. In sum, it has become a spread option in the fullest sense.

On sheer talent, there’s no current Jacket who’s a match for Nesbitt or Dwyer or Allen or Thomas, but that’s not the point. This is a crew that fits a specific scheme — and the line, it must be noted, is doing some road-grading — and that scheme has worked wherever Johnson has taken it.

We shouldn’t expect it to keep working quite so well. (Through three games, Tech leads the nation in total offense – by 74 yards a game over No. 2 Oklahoma State.) Neither should we expect it to stop working. Johnson knows his business, and he recruited these players for a specific purpose. Tech’s not going to average 675 yards over 12 games, but it’s clear the Jackets are onto something. And that something, if not exactly new, is more than a bit different.

“But Washington isn’t as powerful as Nesbitt, and the new man is less apt to carry four defenders five yards for a needed first down.” That line made me chuckle, because Nesbitt was a beast. However, Washington CAN throw, with much more accuracy, and definitely adds a nice, new dimension to the offense. Imagine what this kid will be like in his senior year – I’m excited.

I played at Georgia Southern under Erk Russell and had to face this offense everyday in practice. Tech is just beginning to run it like it should be run. When you have a QB willing to pitch it to the slotback then this offense becomes very dangerous. If the QB learns to pitch the ball 10-20 yards downfield this offense becomes unstoppable. Also, people don’t realize how good of a passing offense the spread option is. You won’t have the attempts or yards but there’s usually lots of big plays by faking the option and then pulling up and hitting a receiver streaking downfield.

MB:

There is one good thing to come from CPJ’s spread offense.
After the Jackets run all over Georgia the last game of the season, Mark Richt will be shown the exit door. Richt is too clueless to adjust to a complicated offense like that.
CPJ will be doing a huge favor to UGA by pushing Richt and his years of incompetence out the door.

Johnson is definately throwing some new wrinkles in this year as well. The counter plays are being used a lot. We’re also not throwing the lollypop sideline passes that were low completion percentages. Washington appears to be making better reads and distributing the ball properly. The offensive line is changing the line of scrimmage, so Washington is running straight down the line to option. If they can continue to push the defensive tackles, the video game numbers will continue.

Mark, I grew up watching all of these options we are seeing at Tech run brilliantly by the players playing for Erk Russell at Georgia Southern in the ’80s. It was amazing then, and very successful – measured by 4 national titles in the first 8 years the program existed after being restarted.

Nobody was better at the downfield pitch than Raymond Gross. No. Body.
MB, I also think what you’re seeing is the evolution of the line and the perimeter blocking, allowing the QB to make one defender guard two people. If it’s two on two, you keep it and it’s two on two because somebody got around a block.
If you really, really want to see just how deadly this offense can be – take a look at 85 and 86 Georgia Southern.

It’s a long season but so far the Jackets are really playing well. The defense needs to step it up a notch and special teams are still “iffy”, but these kids are playing as a team and are very cohesive right now. I admit that we haven’t played a killer schedule yet, but we needed these games to get the new kids’ feet wet. This weekend will be a true test to see just how far along they have come and just how far away we are. But so far, the play has been very good. Less TO’s and more explosive plays due to the hard work of blocking for one another til the whistle blows. BTW… For those fans of UGA that want to brag about playing to ranked teams to start the season… How’d that work out for ya? Go Jackets!!!

I think the notion that Paul Johnson couldn’t recruit and would have trouble when Chan Gailey’s recruits left is dead. See below the starters/regular rotation guys on offense for 2011.

Paul Johnson recruits:
QB – Tevin Washington
BB – David Sims
AB – Orwin Smith
AB – Embry Peeples
AB – Tony Zenon
WR – Stephen Hill
WR – Jeff Greene
OT – Ray Beno
OT – Phil Smith
OT – Tyler Kidney
OG – Will Jackson
OG – Omoregie Uzzi
C – Jay Finch

Chan Gailey recruits:
AB – Roddy Jones
WR – Tyler Melton

Could it be that maybe Paul Johnson is such a good coach that he took a roster full of players who weren’t a great fit for his offense and won a share of the ACC Coastal in 2008, the ACC title in 2009? But now he has players that are scheme specific and can throw it up to full throttle. Now we are seeing what Georgia Southern’s big brother looks like.

As we start playing better defenses, there won’t be as many pitch opportunities. I think we’ll start to see more b-back dives. I also believe that the offense has improved a lot from the first couple seasons, and the blocking has improved off the edges to open up the a-back pitch early and often

Also, Tech did not make a ring for beating the mutts; the ring was made by the CFA Bowl people, and the Tech players chose the inscription. Tech’s record of 12.1 per carry is mammoth regardless who you’re playing. Teams (GA too) play cupcakes all the time and have not touched that record in almost 40 years. THAT is why the bookstore is selling T-shirts. Maybe GA can use it for show and tell in one of its sports history classes. It’ll go great with the coloring books.

I love the triple option, and I have been following Tech football since Coach PJ got the job and installed the offense. The biggest difference I see this year is the improvement in the OLine blocking.

I think Tech will score plenty of points in bowl games as the players master the offense. But Tech cannot expect to simply outscore quality bowl opponents (or good conference teams like VT and FSU). It needs a solid defense, which it does not appear to have.

BamaFan, we’ll know more after we take on UNC, sure enough, but the defense bowed up BIG TIME after the half against Kansas. Coming into the game they had a pretty balanced attack, but we stuffed their runs and made them pass…which we then began to disrupt with a better rush and a lot of swatted balls. I think those swats need to become INT’s, but scheme and execution are coming along as the young defensemen get more game experience, it would seem.

Let this be a lesson to some of you willing to toss Tevin under the bus after the spring game.
Synjin is the better runner.
But he cannot run the offense nearly as good as Tevin.
This explains why Paul Johnson is the coach and you “expert evaluators” are watching from the stands.
Synjin does make a very good 2nd string QB.

bama
the biggest difference is being able to throw a pass. that’s a big reason for the difference. blocking has been good but passing is key. it streches the field and if the secondary comes in for a run, the a back blows past him like whats happened all season. unc has a new coach in the past 2 momths. they gave up 468 yards to va, 170 rushing. so you can more than double what they did and that gives us 400 rushing and another 125 passing for 525 and a 20 point win

@BamaFan, I agree with you, but a great defense can take a mediocre offense a long way and I think the reverse is also true. I would love to see Tech be able to pair a top 10 offense with a top 10 defense. The O line is really playing well and add in the blocking being done by the back/recievers one can see why this offense is clicking. In the 2nd half of the KS game last week I think we started to see signs the D is coming together. So far CAG has kept the D very vanilla and yet it’s easy to see the athleticism of the LBs and DBs. As the season progresses we’ll know more about where the D is going to be. I do know we have only 5 seniors on the starting 22 so the future is also looking real good!

tony martin, can you name me one coach who “knows how” to defend the option? It’s not in “knowing how”, it’s in execution. Iowa is the only team a CPJ coached Tech team has faced that actually executed what they knew. But even then, IF Nesbitt could have passed, it MIGHT have turned out differently. After all Tech still had a CHANCE to tie it up with 6 minutes left in the game, and then Nesbitt threw the ball to the ground. Regardless of that, no other team other than Iowa has played disciplined enough defense to actually contain the option.

and that Iowa team had 3 d linemen who are now in the NFL. Every d coordinator knows how to defend ANY offense, carrying it out in the field for 60 minutes is another story. I don’t care if it is the Pro Set, I formation, Spread, Wishbone, Veer, Wing T or Spread Option in order to stop an offense you have to maintain gap control and leverage at the point of attack. All offenses have the advantage simply because they know what play is called and where the play is designed to go. The defense has to read and react so it has to be a step behind. If the offensive players handle their responsibilities the play will be sucessful, if there is a breakdown then it won’t.

Mark — You clearly do not understand what a spread offense is. CPJ has just pre-fixed option with “spread” so as to sound like he has modernized the attack to something beyond 1968. Just mixing in spread doesn’t make it spread. This is a triple option that throws every now again, not unlike what Texas was doing in 1970, Oklahoma in 1978 or Nebraska in 1994. You don’t have to appolgize for running the triple-option, it is what it is. But anyone who understands how a spread offense, at a technical level will understand that calling this a ‘Spread Option’ is total BS.

There is really only one thing that concerns me about the rest of the season, and that’s the passing defense. As our offense scores more and more points, our opponents will almost be FORCED to go to the air in an effort to keep up or catch up. While Tech’s rushing defense has been fairly solid up to this point, I’ve not been particularly impressed with our passing defense. Granted, they have made adjustments or improved performance in the second halves of both the MTSU and the KU games, but they really need to perform better at the START of each game.

Barring significant injuries, I don’t expect us to have too many offensive problems this year. I just hope we can get more stops against our opponents than they get against us. Go Jackets!

Western Carolina, MTSU, and Kansas, people. Should any team with aspirations for even a good season not expect to blow these teams off the ball? Could Tech be on to something? Sure. But we still dont know anything about this team yet, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. No one said Johnson couldn’t beat these teams. Johnson’s offense will always be a huge challenge for teams that do not have the talent or discipline on defense necessary to stop it. Let’s at least play some ACC games before crowning the achievements.

Mark, you have written these columns each year about Johnson like this, and they usually follow wins over inferior competition. Each year, Tech has hit a brick wall called “a talented defense” and done nothing against it. Even the 6 and 7 win variety UGA squads have figured it out. Miami has shut it down two years running. Clemson shut it down last year. Johnson has averaged 1 TD a game in his 3 bowls. As good as this offense looks, it still has a ceiling to it that will be too low for Tech fans sooner than later.

The ACC slate this year should help Tech a lot. If Johnson cant win on this slate, pack it in. 1) Most of the tough games are at home (UNC, Va Tech, Clemson, and UGA). 2) 3 teams are on new coaches (Maryland, UNC, and Miami), and only one seems to definitely be an improvement (Miami). The jury is out on the other two although neither had a bad start. 3) NC St. lost their QB to Wisconsin who lit Tech up badly last year. 4) no FSU on the schedule unless in the championship game.

Mike, you’re a fool. Beating Tech and “shutting down” the offense are two totally different things, at least in Tech’s case. UGA hasn’t “shut down” Tech’s offense yet. The only reason they won two out of three was that Tech’s defense stunk and Tech turned the ball over (UNFORCED turnovers, I might add). The same with Clemson; they didn’t shut Tech down last year. Tech bumbled their way to defeat. Miami is debatable, but the first loss to Miami was a total breakdown on both sides of the ball by Tech after playing 2 other games in the previous 11 days. Last year, more of that poor execution, mostly on defense, but definitely not a shut down.

Miami is debatable, but the first loss to Miami was a total breakdown on both sides of the ball by Tech after playing 2 other games in the previous 11 days. Last year, more of that poor execution, mostly on defense, but definitely not a shut down.

Good analysis Mark. The offense is definitly different with Tevin at the wheel.Nesbit was a short yardage beast but never the tecnician when it came to footwork or timing. So far this year, our execution has been sharper, where it goes from here remains to be seen but it is really fun to watch when everybodys on the same page . There is not a prettier play in football than a well executed counter option when the fakes and the blocks go click click click. and the pitch comes out right on time to a wide open back on the corner.Thats what makes college football unique and being a Tech fan great. If we continue to play a litte defense this could get very interesting.

But GT playing with the STARTING QB didnt have ANY trouble

Western Carolina, MTSU, and Kansas, people. Should any team with aspirations for even a good season not expect to blow these teams off the ball?

I don’t think you realize that we were expected to be horrible this year. Some picked MTSU to beat us. Kansas beat us last year. Most Tech fans are happy because not only did those teams not beat us, we destroyed them in record breaking fashion. You really think Tech fans should not be excited that our football team is playing better then most expected?

Lets not forget that this is a fairly young team. I dont know how many seniors we will lose after this year, but it wont be much. And I we will have to wait and see if there are any NFL guys that leave, but my point is most of these guys will be back next year too. And then we will have a few more QBs to choose from.

I see Days getting to be good but he will need a off-season or so to really work on the pitch and to a less extent throw. He has shown he can throw better than Nesbitt but still shows those signs of Nesbitt-isms. I mean how many of us dont know by now that if they see Days come on the field that he is going to keep the ball himself. But I think the by the time Vlad is ready, both he and Days will push each other incredibly to master the QB of the option.

A friend who is both an Eagle and a dawg has said many of the same things you mentioned above. He has said that it would take CPJ several years to get his entire system in place, but when he does, watch out.
In a blog yesterday covering CPJ’s press conference, he mentioned watching film from 2008 and wishing he had the blocking schemes in place at that time, but it was just too much, too soon (paraphrased by me).
I think what we’re seeing this year is the starters now have the experience in this system, and as younger guys come in, it’s only going to get better. Downfield blocking has been impressive thus far.

TECH is totally up and optimistic. Football is FUN at TECH. NCAA records are falling. I can not think of another scheme that is more exciting to watch than what CPJ has put together. Literally, any play might go all the way ANYTIME. At TECH it is more about the TEAM instead of individual 4-5 star, NBA’ish player vs player. Coaching and play coming together. GREAT JOB JACKETS!

I see a lot of excuses like “poor execution” and “turnovers”. Could it possibly be that the defenses were good enough to cause those? That the defenses were not fooled by the high school offense? That Tech’s lineman were flat manhandled and the backs didnt have the open field in front of them they enjoy against teams like Kansas and MTSU? I know that’s what happened in the Miami games, and last years Clemson game. I know thats what happened in the bowl games. UGA? Tech got their yardage, but it was tough going and they got stopped far too many times, especially by Soft Willie and a defense that a year before gave up 45 to Johnson. If UGA actually had any DTs last year, it would have been worse. Most of Tech’s yards were up the middle where they had DEs trying to play DT. They still didnt come easy.

This offense is predicated on being able to break the big play. It’s why they beat UGA in Athens a few years ago, and why they havent won the last two. UGA has kept the home run ball off the field, made them grind all the way down, and forced them into mistakes.

Mike you really are dumb, aren’t you? First, NO, Tech’s losses had virtually nothing to do with the other teams’ defenses. ONLY IOWA had a defense that stopped us. All the other losses were do to lousy Tech defenses and self-destruction on offense. THAT’S A FACT !!!

Mike, the big play is not the only reason Tech’s offense succeeds? Just check the MTSU game as an example. This has nothing to do with the level of competition there; it’s just an example of how CPJ’s offense works. In the first quarter against MTSU, Tech scored 4 times, 2 of them were off of big plays, 2 of them were off of LONG SUSTAINED drives. The past 3 years have proven (at least to those with any semblance of intelligence) that Tech can capitalize off each. True there were no (or not many) big plays against Georgia last year, but there WERE LONG SUSTAINED drives. It’s just unfortunate for Tech that two of those drives ended in UNFORCED turnovers that led to UGA scores. Even at the end of the game, Tech was on a long drive that, had TW not thrown a bad pass, would have sent the game into OT.

LOL ok, buddy. Gaining yardage without scoring means nothing. When you lose 38-3, 35-10, 28-13, 37-17, 24-14, even 14-7…you got shut down. Their defense stopped you when it needed to and when it counted.

Yes Tech’s D sux, but that’s part of the deal when you fire your coach. Johnson obviously cant coach D, so its up to him to bring in someone who can. Gailey needed a better OC, but he had Tenuta running a far better D than Tech has seen since. Tenuta didnt want to stay though. That’s what I keep telling UGA fans about firing Richt because of a couple of lousy seasons in 10 years. Who’s to say that Dan Mullen, Gus Malzhan or any other pipe dream replacment will bring a D in that can stop anyone? Seen Auburn’s defense this year? Think they really would have won more than 8 games last year without Superman 2 at QB?

Gatorman

For the last 2 years both fans and sports casters have said regularly, that Tech would be a much better offense with a passing attack. Okay, it seems they have one now but will PJohnson use it if they fall behind or revert to his comfort zone of running all the time. Good teams with good defenses will tighten the lanes to run in, and stop the long drive. However, throw over there heads with some good passes and they cannot do that. Secondly, he falls in love with up the middle runs when the wide pitch wears the defense down. (see last Saturday)

I got a little comment I’d like to mention. I’ve been perturbed by the decision to change jerseys to navy numbers. I believe the change was more than jerseys alone. In this article’s photo, the Tech player wears vegas gold pants and side jersey stripes. That’s more of a change from the WC game unis, in which Tech’s pants and jersey side stripes were a darker color of gold. Actually the darker color was so dark that I can’t imagine some people at the game could not see the numbers. Maybe they need glasses. Anyway, the AJC reporting that the change was to be only the jersey numbers was not correct. Now, as an alum, I can get to watch the rest of the home games on tv or computer and not have to boycott.

Nice article, I think you get it; few people do on Paul Johnson. I heard someone the other day in the Kansas broadcast call CPJ cocky. I don’t think it is cocky as much as the world keeps trying to tell a great coach he doesn’t know what he is doing. It makes them mad when they are so wrong. Spurrier gets a lot more of this and there are people and writers that actually hate the man. In Johnson’s case you have a man that has kind of reinvented football. He can take the humble football player and win with him. He plays against what you give him, including recruits you don’t want, like a marshal arts fighter. Your aggressiveness is his advantage, your cheating on defense for a pass or a run will get you burned. He got humbled last year but never lost his faith in himself. His players appreciate the chance to play college football at this level and never lost faith in him either. NCAA probation for something that is right about college football, like I say most people just don’t get Johnson or Tech. Maybe that too is Johnson’s competitive advantage. Maybe winning that ACC Championship two years ago made people and players forget who they were. I think the problem is fixed this year.

No doubt that Georgia gets great atheletes each year, but CMR does not coach them up. Tech recruits as a whole may not match UGA”s, but CPJ has recruited to meet his needs and coaches all players up. Anyone who can establish a desire to block in a young man that is used to being the feature back is a heck of a coach. The defense will get better as the year progresses, but I worry about the special teams not being so special. If we can get special teams that do not turn the ball over and not make critical mistakes, this team could be special.

Good article, Mark. It will be interesting to see how things go this weekend against UNC. They have the best defense (by far) that Tech will have faced yet. But they have had some great defenders in the previous years, and Tech has still found a way to run the ball successfully on them. The key will be if Tech can complete the passes they have been — if they are successful with that, it will make them hard for anyone to stop. It all boils down to execution. And with Tech’s defense still a bit suspect, they will need to have some long drives to shorten the game as well and keep their defense off the field.

The ony way we can be stopped is if we stop ourselves. That is not likely with the discipline and execution this team has.

Slight correction, Mark Bradley. Anthony Allen actually had over 1,300 rushing yards last year. Georgia Tech is the only team in the country to have produced a 1,300-yard rusher each of the past 5 seasons.

Ernest T. Bass – You’re an idiot. The offense is not gimmicky, it’s actually quite mainstream when you look at football at every level around the country. Preparation time really has nothing to do with it, but the lack of time to ready a team for an offense they don’t normally see does make up for even large gaps in talent, given that the offense executes extremely well. In reality, it comes down to talent, and, if GT has superior talent compared to another team, they’ll win. If they don’t, they still might win based on their discipline and execution. Can the same be said about U(sic)GA?

GIVE ME A BREAK,
I hope you are right, and I think a 45-17 win is quite possible. If so, Tech should be ranked in the top 10 – without question.

I’ll be there today to watch. Can’t wait!

If do right, no can defense

I think it will be a good day for Washington. Carolina may over-commit to the dive and pitch options (they have a great defensive line & fast LBs), allowing Washington to hit them with the keeper, as well as with his passing.

Plays which could work: Veer (keeper), Midline/Iso, Toss sweeps, Draw plays, vertical passes, etc.
Plays which may or may not work: HB dive, Rocket tosses/passes, screen passes, counter plays, etc.

Go Jackets!

The only problem with the triple option is , when a team has time to prepare for it, then they stop us. Look at the last two bowl games, Iowa killed us. Maybe we can sneak up on a bowl game and just show up, that way the other team doesn’t know how to defend us. I live in Clemson, and there already talk about playing Tech. Kevin Steele the D coach has already started preparing to play Tech. The way they are playing know, they will kill us if they stop us. I might have to move.
