Michael Vick made three turnovers and left early. (AJC photo by Jason Getz)
Traffic congealed on Northside Drive 2 1/2 hours before kickoff Sunday night. Ninety minutes later, the line to enter the Georgia Dome was 10-deep and 10-wide. From the crush of humanity, you’d have thought somebody famous was in town.
Actually, somebody famous was. Michael Vick was once the only compelling reason to watch the Falcons, and now he’s a both ex-Falcon and ex-con. In Philadelphia he has become the polished player he never was here, and on this night Vick would oppose a quarterback who’s the pride of Old Penn Charter School, a quarterback some Atlantans insist will never be as good as No. 7.
The vagaries of professional football had kept Matt Ryan and Vick from gracing the same NFL field. When Vick played here as a reserve in December 2009, Ryan was hurt. When Ryan played in Philly last October, Vick was hurt. But now the moment was at hand, and you could have game-planned a full summer and not concocted a more loaded Week 2 collision.
The Falcons, who some have cast as Super Bowl champs-to-be, entered on a six-game losing streak. Granted, four of those were exhibitions, but the first and last of the six were troubling.
The Falcons had been embarrassed by a hot quarterback wearing green back in January, and on Opening Day in Chicago they’d been bulldozed by Brian Urlacher. They needed this game not just to prove that, almost five years after Vick had last taken a snap as a Falcon, they’d emerged from his considerable shadow; in more pragmatic terms, they needed it to remind themselves they know how to win.
Three minutes into the third quarter, the Falcons were on track to doing both. They led 21-10 largely because Vick kept giving them the ball. (With a former Atlantan working for Philly and a native Philadelphian playing for Atlanta, sometimes it gets confusing.) Perhaps trying to earn his way into the Falcons’ Ring of Honor, Vick fumbled twice near the end of the first half and threw an interception to open the second.
Down 11, the Eagles responded with a quick touchdown — the Eagles are nothing if not quick — and then Ryan threw an interception and then Matt Bosher, who punts for the Falcons, dropped one out-of-bounds at the 20. This, if you’re a punter, is usually a good thing. Trouble was, this punt plopped down on the Falcons’ 20. Soon the visitors led by 10, and that might have been that. Except for one thing.
Vick was gone. He’d been hit on a pass and driven into one of his blockers. He left for the locker room with what was described as a neck injury — as he exited, he responded to boos by pointing to the scoreboard — and suddenly a game gone wrong was winnable again. The Falcons were 10 points in arrears, but they had more than a quarter left and they were facing a quarterback named, appropriately, Kafka.
“A lot of ebbs and flows,” Mike Smith, the Falcons’ coach, would say afterward.
With 4:48 to play, the Falcons were again in front. Ryan had been having an odd game — he had thrown three touchdown passes but had dealt two interceptions and been hurried and harried — but reverted to precise form with his team under duress. His fourth touchdown pass brought the Falcons close, and then Michael Turner galvanized the go-back-ahead surge with a 61-yard burst and a scoring sweep.
A four-point lead with 4:48 remaining wouldn’t have seemed a cushion against Vick, but against Mike Kafka the dynamics were rather different. On such a bizarre night, though, it somehow made sense that we’d be handed a Kafkaesque finish. The Philly sub led his team upfield, and was it possible the fancied Falcons would slip to 0-2 having been beaten by the namesake of a famed existentialist?
Er, no. Jeremy Maclin dropped a fourth-down pass that would have given the Eagles a first down at the Falcons’ 15, and the home side had done the job. It had beaten Michael Vick’s team while battering Michael Vick, and it had won a game that filled an immense need.
“It was perseverance,” Smith said. “You can’t overstate that.”
No, you can’t. Sometimes it matters less how well you play than how hard. This was such a night. The Falcons didn’t look nearly their best, but there’ll be time enough for fine-turning. This was one of those games that had to be won by any means necessary, and it was.

Big win for the season and for Matt Ryan. This was needed on a lot of levels, not only to help exorcise the still-lingering presence of Vick with the Atlanta fanbase (I really don’t know whether that can EVER be accomplished, but the results tonight did feel somewhat vindicating as a Falcons fan) but to avoid going 0-2 to begin a tough regular season schedule.
I hope Michael Vick’s injury isn’t too serious; I was glad the blood was just from a bitten tongue as opposed to something potentially really bad. But Matt Ryan, for his part, answered a lot of criticism from certain folks regarding his fortitude and toughness despite being rushed and hit all night (seriously, we HAVE to get him some decent O-Line protection!!!); even being able to get back up after doing that split with a defender on top of him was an accomplishment, much less going on to lead the Falcons to a big comeback win.
Overall, a good night and a big win. GO FALCONS!!!

As a lifelong Falcons Fan and supporter of the red & black, I don’t even care about Michael Vick’s illegal interstate gambling operation that involved dogfighting.
I stopped being a Michael Vick fan when the “content of his character” revealed that he had KNOWINGLY gone around and infected numerous unsuspecting women with his Herpes and other STDs without telling them just because he “didn’t like to talk about it.” He selfishly just wanted to gratify himself at the expense, health & well-being of other human beings.
For that alone, I hope that monster burns in the eternal flames of Hell.

Mr. Bradley, my last comment apparently got caught by that random screen thingy again. Anyway, I basically wanted to say that Matt Ryan definitively answered a lot of questions tonight about his toughness and fortitude. Just being able to get back up after doing a split with a defender on top of him (time to get him some actual O-Line protection!!!) was impressive, but leading the Falcons to the win afterward was even moreso. Great win.

The haters can say what they want, but Ryan went from looking lost and beat up to leading the team back for a win. Vick’s absence in the game had no bearing on the fact that Ryan lead the Falcons on two 80 yard drives. And if Vick wasn’t knocked out of the game, there’s certainly no guarantee that the Eagles would have won. Remember that Atlanta scored twice off of Eagles’ turnovers when Vick was in the game. Overall, a nice and much needed win.
That being said, our corners continue to be our achillies heel, just like last year, and our offensive line needs to be stronger. These seem like the same areas of weakness from last year, and if these two areas don’t improve, I can’t see this team going anywhere in the playoffs, regardless of how gutsy Matt Ryan is.

Big win despite another O-line meltdown. Sam Baker is a stiff, Cole whupped him all night long. Kudos to Matt Ryan for standing in there, he had happy feet at times but who could blame him. He was getting hit on every pass. The Vick vs. Ryan debate will go on but I think both men are excellent qb’s with totally different styles. The moron that said Ryan wet the bed has clearly never taken a hit in his life, Matt Ryan led his team to an improbable victory.

Letting Harvey Dahl go does not look like a smart decision at all- Why are we the only team in the league that has a kicker that can not routinely kick it in the back of the end zone when we are spotted an extra 5 yards? I watched Dahl’s replacement- he sux- I think he is too tall at 6′7 to play guard nose tackles just get under neath him and he is getting drove into the running backs and back field almost every play- You mean to tell me there is no one in the league that just got cut that isn’t better than him and Sammy “the bull rush” Baker?
Don’t even get me started on Christoher owens- he was beat by 5 yards when maclin missed that pass that’s why Andy was laughing because that was pure luck-
Hey I will take it but hell you got to address dahl’s replacement, baker, and c. owens, and the new punter they are flat out horrible.

Atlanta, as happy as I am tonight, let’s not forget before the gutsy trade to bring Vick here, you could get Falcons tickets literally for free. Vick changed that, he brought excitement and interest to the city of Atlanta for once. Atlanta hasn’t had an elite player like him since he left. I’m not praising Vick, just remembering, despite his shortcomings, what he brought to this city. Also, my mother could block better than Sam Baker did tonight. If we can’t find someone better, Ryan is going to be on IR before you know it. First thing tomorrow morning, cut Baker.

Aside from helping disprove any notions that Matt Ryan is soft or unable to take punishment, this game also showed the importance to the Falcons of trying as hard as they can to once again secure home-field advantage. No, last year it didn’t help at all, but I’ll take the odds in the Georgia Dome in January as opposed to say, at Lambeau or the SuperDome. Generally speaking, as last week’s game against the Bears demonstrated, the Falcons usually have their worst defeats on the road when pitted against playoff-bound opponents; when they play those same teams in Atlanta, they at least tend to play up to their level for the most part.
Of course unless the offensive line issues are swiftly addressed the Falcons likely won’t have to worry about the playoffs. They need SERIOUS help there.

Tonight we all saw once again what #7 brings to the table; quick and frequent scores, but also fumbles and unfortunately for him and Philly, injury. That being said, while he was in the game Eagles +10 in scoring, but after he left -14. I feel it won’t be hard to come to the conclusion that if Philly doesn’t keep him healthy, their season may go similarly to that of another team with a bird logo a few years ago when their qb got hurt in preseason by the Ravens (a team with another bird logo) While we celebrate this win let us not overlook the fact that a 3rd string qb almost beat us!!! Somebody please consistently rush the qb, I’m starting to miss the Gritz Blitz more and more.

Those last two 80 yards drives against the dream team defense orchestrated by #2 gives us all a little hope again after losing hope watching Baker get embarrassed, our defense once again allowing wide open receivers, and Mr. Abraham doing the most stupid thing one can do in a football game..lie up off sides on a key 3rd and four in the red zone giving a team an automatic 1st down that led to a TD.
Ryan wasn’t perfect…but the man was a warrior out there today unwilling to lose!

Why is the name Kafka appropriate? Because the Falcons were on “trial” after last week’s big loss? Because a 2nd-string quarterback naturally feels alienated amid a frenzied road crowd? Not fully getting the reference, MB. I agree, though, that the finish was somewhat Kafkaesque. While not absurdly complex, there was a sense of impending doom, considering these are the Falcons. Now if Bosher bungles the final punt, becomes a roach, scurries around end, and gets squashed, then yes, I agree, we’re sending the team to Prague for an interrogation.

I maintain the Falcons best Offensive Coordinator is Matt Ryan. The no huddle works. Mike Mularky needs to be fired. This offense has WAY too many weapons to look this bad in anything other than the no huddle. Lots of Baker bashing here but wouldn’t anyone with ANY football sense give him some help, run a trap, ANYTHING???? Instead, no help, no imaginative play calling. Name Ryan Offensive Coordinator! Mularky HAS to go.

Mark,
On Sportscenter, Trent Dilfer says he doesnt understand why the Falcons dont run the no huddle more often (if not all the time). He thinks Matt Ryan can handle it, and actually said he is comparable to Brady and Manning (not in terms of talent), but in terms of being able to process many things quickly, and to make the right decisions more often than not.

Thank you very much ! I had Atlanta picked to upset the Eagles all week ! Alot of people on AJC Blogs rag Matt Ryan and it makes me mad because all the Kid does is win ballgames ! I think hes a heck of a player and if the Atlanta Coaching Staff would fix that no-block so called offensive line to give him some protection he could put up some big passing yards.
You notice when Falcons got touchdowns they had to be reviewed, looked at sideways, upside down and whatever but the Eagles, oh its automatic! So one sided, you know!
And the Defense and the ” Beasty Boys”, they played well and got it done when needed !
Ohhhhhhh, and Welcome Home Michael Vick! Da-hummnnnn!

Baker did have help, there were tight ends also trying to slow down #58, but he was lined up so wide and had so much momentum, he just made Baker look silly. I didn’t know that he was a 2 time pro-bowler, he looked like a hall of famer tonite!! Since Baker had so much trouble with the wide end formation, get used to seeing it, if something works, other teams will try it also.

It was a good and lucky win. It’s pretty simple. The Falcons have a lot of work to do on their O-line but it’s the defense that has me concerned. Why is no one calling for BVG’s job right now? The Falcons simply have to quit playing quarters zone defense on every single third down. Our safeties cannot play 20 yards off the ball on third and ten. We cannot drop our best pass rusher into a zone dog and eliminate him from the pass rusg. IT DOESN’T FOOL ANYONE BVG!!!!! SO, CUT IT OUT!!!!

Hey, Mark, I might be crazy, and I know we had a 4 point lead which requires a td to win, but with a shaky punter and the worlds most exciting punt returner facing us, would it have been insane to take the punt snap, run around in the end zone for as long as possible, take the safety, and kick with probably less than 10 seconds left in the game? Their kicker already left a long field goal attempt ten yards short. After that shank earlier in the game by our guy, I was thinking safety.

Matt Ryan and Mularkey was about to make me have freakin heart attack all night with QB play and Mularkey play calling. Mularkey finally found out late in the game that their D-Line couldn’t stop Turner or the rest of the run game. The run game is the key to this team. I love the addition of Reggy Kelly. Great blocking. Some how and someway he and Ovie needs to be in the backfield together power blocking for Turner and the rook. The O-line played awful but Matt Ryan got hit a lot on his own, holding on to the ball way too long. He needs to learn to throw the ball away sometime and his high ball throwing may cause someone to get hurt soon. Why is Sam Baker still starting or on this Team. Wasn’t he like a first or second round draft pick? Did I mention that our Linebackers SUCK right now!! This also was a horrible officiating game. Ryan gets hit twice helmate to helmate and a late hit but none was called. hate Vick got hurt but i’m glad he got taken out of the game because there was no way that defense would have stopped Vick from getting 3 yards and 7 yards on Phillys final two possession. I guess Grimes finally gets some respect because there wasn’t too many balls thrown his way. Interior D needs to buff up more or get stronger.

It looked like the Eagles cut off the engine and put it in neutral after Vick’s injury. Seemed like their philosophy was kick a bad dog too many times and the dog will bite, even if you hold it by the choker chain. Rather than risk some serious injury (of course with the meaningless 15-yard penalty award), it was best to ease up on rushing Matt Ryan. Ryan was looking shell-shocked mid-way through the 3rd quarter. Up by 10, the Eagles basically cut back their blitzes significantly. That allowed Ryan to play quarterback. Smelt like Goodell made a call to ease up on the team picked to go to the Super Bowl.
Even though the Eagles let the Falcons win, a team that gives up 30.5 points a game, and over 400 yards of offense to the opponent each week is not going to win many games (if any more).
Obvious observations:
The punter is the worst in the league.
Dunta Robinson would be called a goon if the Falcons played hockey. He is part of why the Eagles quit, but not because he could cover anyone.
Take away four runs in two games and Turner is averaging .5 yards per carry. He runs like a punch drunk boxer whose only offense is to lean on his opponent.
The golden Alabama rookie, Julio Jones, needs to catch the deep throws that hit him in the hands, regardless of how close the coverage is. Also, he needs to be taught that the player is not down when he falls on the ground with an interception in the NFL.

21 unanswered points before Vick got hurt to take a 10 pt lead. Yeah, he does not play D but he does keep the offense on the field so the D isn’t needed as much. The Falcons would have lost by 2 or more scores if Vick doesn’t get hurt. Good the Falcons won, because A, they aren’t going to win too many more, and B, yes they need to move on from Vick even though Matt Ryan is a very shaky QB. Finally, don’t fool yourself, this team was about to get ran out of there own building before Vick got hurt. If you are really a fan and not a hater you need to look at this for what it was. The Moment?
In all great franchises there are moments you can point to that seem to be a turning point, or even the turning point. Steelers’ immaculate reception, Patriots’ tuck rule game to name a couple of examples.
I told my wife during this game that the Falcons have to eventually learn how to play with physical talented teams, when things are going poorly and still win the game.
Admittedly, I was getting angry because Matty “Ice” was anything but cool (for awhile) by stamping his feet in the pocket, and Turner was a bumbler, not the burner and after last week, I said “this is it, this is the game where they live or die this season”.
I thought they were going to choke and I was doubting Matt Ryan’s abilities in a big game.
Obviously, my doubts were premature and how appropriate that we jumped out of the malaise with a high rocket to rookie Julio Jones, our expensive wide out, drafted to stretch the field and give us a quick strike threat.
Darn, if they didn’t just chuck the ball to him because you have to once in a while and the rookie leaped up and caught the darn thing and suddenly, the Falcons took off!
I say this is the game, and the Julio Jones catch is the moment that our Falcons grew up.
Congratulations to the Falcons for a smash-mouth win, that we had to have. Now that is how you win championships. Maybe this is the moment? I say it is.

Mark – the NFL’s refusal to enforce the roughing rules for Matt Ryan needs to be addressed – he tok a running head butt from a DLineman and in the fourth quarter one of those guys grabbed him aroung the neck and tried to split him in half.
Neither play drew a penalty.
But 55 got flagged for some reason I have yet to understand, pulled up, barely laid a hand on the Philly backup QB, and drew a flag to turn a 3rd-and-long into 1st and goal, half the distance to the goal line.
And it’s not just this game – this has happened throughout Matt’s career; I know the Falcons are not one of the “Golden” franchises that get the benefit of every doubt, but disparities such as those we saw last night are so blatant as to boggle a reasonable mind.
I know we’re never supposed to complain about it – but at what point should such extreme differences of standard not be called out?

Come on guys. Matt Ryan had a horrible game. We know you all want to make this a Mike Vick and Matt Ryan thing, but u need to look at it from a football standpoint. When Mike was in the game, the FALCONS could not contain the Eagles. The reason Matt Ryan made a couple plays, because Samuel was hurt. Matt Ryan has a lot to learn, and I’m still disappointed in the defense, and lack of offense execution. If you watch the game, Matt Ryan started to get those happy feet, similar to an old Falcons QB, Chris Miller. He’s fortunate Michael Turner had that big run, other than that, we would be talking about those two picks. We all know what Vick did, but you all need to get over it. I watch the game on tv, it’s a shame the DOME can’t be louder. These are fair weather fans in ATLANTA. I didn’t see the Eagles jump outside not one time. We need better fans in ATLANTA. We still have people hating this man, get over it. Matt Ryan needs to prove himself. I don’t trust him. They need fire the defensive coordinator, and offensive coordinator. Superbowl team, please, not with that defense, and QB. I like VICK, but I like the FALCONS. Matt need to be smarter with the ball, he’s been in the league long enough. They were lucky tonight, but I don’t see a SUPERBOWL TEAM. Remove the hate, and just enjoy the game of football. He’s moved on, and it’s time for all of us to move on. Thank GOD you all are not my judge.

Coach,
What the hell was your thought process punting to D Jackson with 15 seconds left?
Got lucky he didnt break one on you.
Is it possible to get a new punter before next week? Prefer a punter who can do better than a 35 yd avg.

First congrads to the falcons , for the hard win. It was a tough game, it was a stroke of luck thtat Vick hit his lineman’s arm, so we should not take credit for it. Last offensive drive ,key, and last defensive stand good. Got a lot of work to do, though. Defense is soft.

@JWDavis: If you go back and look at the teams the falcons have played since Ryan has been here, they have a very favorable schedule over that time and not that I don’t like Matt Ryan but he still hasn’t won a playoff game. Ryan has more help now than Vick every had when he was here and a much better head coach.

Commenting on an earlier post…. What Michael Vick brought to Atlanta was disgrace and shame. Matt Ryan as the face of the Falcons and by extension the face of Atlanta is great for Atlanta. A dog killer, ex-con, STD infected quarterback like Vick was good for Atlanta?? You must be kidding or have quite low expectations. Congratulations, Matt, on a job well done.

What a game! A great win on all sides of the ball! Every time I thought the game was “over”, it revved up again and changed the score. Does anyone realize that for every Eagles score the Defense gave up, —the Defense came back and kept us in this game! They Kept getting the ball back! Huge win tonight for our guys!! Matt Ryan proved once again that he is one of the best clutch quarterbacks in the league (and the toughest). Our offensive line will definitely be addressed after playing horribly for two games in a row (We should he kept Dahl instead of Baker) and our defense wasn’t much better but kept us in the game.

Glad to win. But I realize our team needs alot of work. Also, Matt Ryan is not the QB I thought he was. He is a good QB. That’s all. He will never take us to the Super Bowl. He doesn’t have the “IT” factor. He’s not like Big ben or Aaron Rodgers. Basically, Matt doesn’t make plays.

I would have been a lot more satisfied with either team winning with both QBs finishing the game. This was anticlimactic. Vick left the game up by 10 and I was telling everyone around me at the time that there’s no way the Eagles win the game. Normally 10-point comebacks in the 4th quarter are exciting, but they are somewhat less so when it’s blatantly obvious that they are going to happen.
In the end, the Falcons — and Ryan in particular — showed again that they are completely different when they are indoors, and the Eagles showed again that their linebackers are going to be their downfall if they lose in the playoffs.

Ryan did not play well early on, hopefully this game will give him much needed confidence for the rst of the season. he has to play with confidence. I think he lost a lot of it in the play-off game last season and even more in the lost to the Bears. Matt Ryan gotta get it back on track. Next week against the Bucs in TB won’t be easy, the game against Tampa is may be an even bigger game than this one. Tampa is a division foe and both games last season was very close. It will be hard to make the paly-offs as a wild card this year, the NFC is staked with good teams. Falcons must win the South, therefore they must beat Tampa and N.O. in head to head match-ups.

I am going to be very honest. The Falcons won, period. Hooray for the Falcons, blah, blah, blah. However, Matt Ryan did not even come close to looking like a NFL quarterback until Mike Vick was knocked out of the game. Finally, half of the monkey was off of his back. I think he actually breathed a sigh of relief. I am sick of hearing about the Falcons’ winning seasons and how great Matt Ryan is. Matt Ryan has not led the Falcons to a single playoff win. I would like to remind you Falcon Fans that this is Matt Ryan’s 4th season. What good is it to have a great season, and you cannot advance in the playoff? Matt Ryan is average on his best days. The Falcons are not going to the Super Bowl any time soon. Matt Ryan is not going to get you there. If I recall correctly, Vick had led the Falcons to the playoffs not once but twice by his 4th year, and the Falcons actually advanced. People tend to forget that, and the Falcons had 3 of the worst coaches in the league running the show, and an offensive line that was horrific. Falcons’ fans love mediocrity. I am confident that this has to do with all the folks that hate Vick. As long as you keep having your back to back winning seasons, you can care less about winning playoff games. Are these the standards you hold your kids to, MEDIOCRITY?! This is CRAZY!!!!!!! I am going to say it. Last I checked, a defense is allowed to knock a QB out of the game. There are very few defenses in the league that wouldn’t take pride in having taken out a starting QB. The Eagles certainly tried to take Ryan out. It didn’t work. We took Vick out and reaped the benefits from it. It’s just a game; it’s just entertainment, but try telling that to the men on the field who are paid great sums of money to beat the holy hell out of the opposition. Great win for the Falcons, and more power to ‘em for putting Vick on the ground and making him tap out.

1-1 against two division winners from last year. The biggest concern for this offense is pass protection. Other teams don’t even have to blitz to get pressure on Ryan. Geez, no wonder why it seems the receivers are always covered. If my math serves me correctly, this leaves (usually) a 7 v. 5 matchup.

I think this team has the talent to win big in this league but lacks the coordinators to make it happen. We cannot win with BVG as the defensive coordinator. We continue to struggle against diverse offenses with speed. Our D-Line isn’t dictating what the offense does to put the DB’s in a better position to get stops. Our O-line has some how digressed without Harvey Dahl. Then again, maybe we’re just seeing more defenses take advantage of Sam Baker.

Your observation is correct. The hit by Robinson took some of the wind out of the Eagles. Certainly had an impact on that last dropped pass. Watch the replays carefully and you’ll notice Maclin taking his eye off of the ball and looking to the middle of the field. Partly looking for the first down marker, but you’ll also see him bracing up for contact. I’m not advocating illegal or dirty play. I’m just calling it like I saw it.

TruthTeller,
Allow me to “tell” you this “truth” – Mike Vick has LOST more playoffs games (three) than Matt Ryan (two), The two than Vick won (against Green Bay and St Louis) were against two of the worst teams in the playoffs and neither of whom were Super Bowl Contender; the two that Ryan lost were against two Super Bowl teams…one that was the best team in the league last season that WON the Super Bowl, the other, St Louis, a Super Bowl team that would have won if not for the last second heroics by the Steelers.
Now you have the whole truth!

sweet comeback for the Falcons. Huge win and a statement win that Atlanta can be tough enough to go 15 rounds. Eagles looked like they might have had us down but Atlanta changed it in the 4th. The Eagles were gassed and Vick of course was in the locker room. And it wouldnt have mattered if he was there, he doesnt play defense and Matt Ryan lead two 80 yard drives. Eagles’ offensive players are fragile at best..fast yes, but very fragile. And yes S.Baker was embarassing at LT. That has to be fixed somehow.
J. Jones isn’t really a deep threat so much, he is better underneath. Just get the ball in his hands quicker. Falcons should know this if they watched any SEC games the past couple of years.

Matt won’t be around for a whole season if that offensive line doesn’t figure out what time it is. I actually think Philly wore themselves out that last quarter. Second week in a row the defensive line has eaten up the Falcons.

Have faith Jones will be even better once he learns how to concentrate and all those dirty little tricks that they allow in the NFL and not college. Next to the quarterback the receiver is the hardest positon on the field to learn and when you run a 4.3 and are 6′4″ 230 lbs, quick learning may not be your cup of tea.

This was a horribly officiated game! Philly’s O-line was not being called for BLATANT holds and hands to the face. There was one play were Abraham was almost decapitated and the officials didn’t call it. Not to mention the helmet-to-helmet on Ryan from Cullen Jenkins. Fork Vick, I’m glad dog-killer got knocked out of the game.

Great game for the fans. Hate to see all the “hate” comments above, tho’. Not a Vick fan but give him his due – he’s going to be the key cog in a lot of the Eagles wins this year – and I say that with “tongue in cheek” Hopefully this game is what the Falcons need to being the team we all expect and hope they will be this year. But boy does the offensive line look porous and in need of shoring up on pass blocking. How about Turner, Jones, White, and Gonzales though. Onward and upwards!

@Michal Vick – I know you hate it when I pop out of the closet every now and then, cause I remind you and the general public of the person you are deep down inside. Lazy, complacent, a druggie, and a criminal. Once you are out of the NFL you can embrace me again as your true self. See you soon.

I was one of the few Mike Vick supporters prior to the dogfighting ring was exposed. I was also one of the few people on here saying we should draft Matt Ryan. Although my sudden disdain for Vick upon learning of the dogfighting has subsided and he has done his time, I pull for Vick to make the best of his comeback as a person and a player, but I will never pull for him against the Falcons.
With that said, can we now turn the play calling over to Ryan? I don’t have any stats readily available, but from all observations it sure seems they click a lot better when they run the no-huddle and also when he audibles at the line. Maybe it’s time for the staff to put more trust in his hands and see how powerful this offense can be.

Don’t make excuses that Vick got knocked out of the game for the Eagles losing. Matt Ryan played his ass off, and so do the rest of the Falcons. Kafka being in the game didn’t hurt the Eagles-he made some great plays. Our defense stepped up and pressured Maclin, and our offense went in and got the points.
If Abraham didn’t have those 2 penalties, you’d be taking at least 4 points off the board as they both occured on 3rd and long, giving the Eagles 1st downs.
Dunta Robinson needs to get a serious come to jesus meeting this week…he’s not just risking the other player’s health with those kind of hits, he’s also setting himself up for a life out of football, and a career as a wheelchair athlete.

Great win by the Falcons. But our D coordinator might be the worst in the league. And our defense is still pathetic other than our defensive ends and Grimey. For all the talk about Lofton and Weatherspoon, I just never see either LB make any big plays. All of their tackles are 20 yards downfield and they never seem to have tackles for losses. The D as a whole just looks way to soft, and when they blitz they always overrun the play. It hit me last night that its all about the scheme they play- and the O coordinator from Philly was outscheming Van Goober all night. It took a Jeremy Maclin drop to win the game. But we’lll take it.

The thing is, Matt Ryan got murdered last night, no protection from Sam Baker at all and what did he do, lead the Falcons on not 1 but 2 touchdowns in the 4th quarter. The Falcons dominated the clock in the 4th quarter and proved once and for all a fragile QB like Vick, he willingness to STILL after all these years hold that ball in one outstretched hand and run (one fumble), and Matt Ryan getting back up off the floor time and time and time again and lead a team back to victory. Anyone and I mean ANYONE who says this isn’t RYAN’s house now is living in a fairy tale. He is now 21-2 at home and 32-14 overall as a starter with going on his 4th winning season in a row! When Ryan started calliing his own plays at the line and running the hurry up, he OWNED the game in the 4th quarter. Vick or no Vick in the 4th quarter, doesn’t matter. Vick can’t play defense. Great show and for all of those who are counting, Ryan 1- Vick 0.

Great win for the Falcons, but there appear to be two major problems for this team:
1) The defense is not good enough for the Falcons to be a Super Bowl- calibre team, and
2) Matt Ryan needs to be a great quarterback in the same class as Manning, Brady, or Brees for this team to win big. He’s not right now!

Michael “Where’s the ball” Vick has played like this all of his life… a couple of fast ‘wow’ plays and then a zillion turnovers and always getting hurt. The Ravens beat the starch out of the Steelers and then let the Titans, a team that Jacksonville beat last week with no offense, beat them. Man it is as much a mind game as anything else. Holy Cow I was worried…………we needed this win. If we don’t get some O line help, especially on the left, Ryan won’t be around for a full season. Finally, the special teams showed up, don’t know why Weems let us get trapped at the 1/2 yard line. Obviously, Turner’s Burner is flaming out and hesitating at the line again. Still had a good game with 60+ yards on that one carry around the right side…..anyone notice he didn’t stutter step on that one. Why can’t our Pro Bowl recievers get some separation…….not meaning to dis Gonz, he didn’t need separation, he just dug the ball out wherever it was thrown, a helluva catch in the back of the end zone. Truly, the defense didn’t play that good, just good enough.

Vick should send Chris Collinswoth a ring or at least some flowers for all the butt kissing he send his way. Way over the top in Vick praise. What has Vick won as a starting QB?

Congrats Falcon fans. It was a tough win although the Falcons were definitely outplayed by the Eagles. Down 31-21 in the fourth shows this team is has what it takes to win. The only problem is that although they won, they didn’t dominate as the Eagles did. It’s more of the Eagles not executing and making mistakes rather that the Falcons making the plays. That I believe will show more as the season goes. But a win is a win as in the end that’s really all that counts.

Kudos to the Falcons for hanging in there for the win, even though they were getting soundly whupped in the second half until Vick got hurt and left the game. You can’t take that away from them. But this year’s Falcons seem to be struggling for whatever reason. Based on the game I was watching, if Vick had not been injured, the Eagles would have won. I know that is shoulda, woulda, coulda talk, and anything can happen. But, the Eagles were closing in for the kill when Vick left the game. Not sure what is wrong, but I am confident that the coaches are not in the same denial mode as many fans who have commented, and they will work hard to fix the problem. Way too many penalties and mistakes — and the defensive front line just evaporated way too many times.

@Sonofadog riddle me this, how can Matt Ryan be horrible and beat the Eagles with Vick at the helm..hmmmm if he is so good how did we get up by 10? And I hope he is not badly damaged but sonny knocking the QB out of a game is what a D should do every chance they get. Funny how Ryan can be smacked and get up and continue while Vick continues to go down and stay down…face it Ryan is just a tougher hombre…———-
Uh, Vick did not finishe the game. If you look at the numbers, Vick’s are better. Eagles lost more than Atlanta won. Let me show you the numbers:
Vick: 19-28 242 yds, 2 td’s, 1 int(that really was not an int), QB rating 103.6 through 3 qtrs
Ryan: 17-28 195 yds 4 td’s (all 5 yds or less) 2 int, QB rating 91.5
Numbers don’t lie sonny!

The loss to the falcons was a fluke! If Vick doesn’t get hurt by that dirty hit, the Eagles win that game easy. Mark this down: Philly’s going to the superbowl and atlanta will be lucky to get a wild card.

@Sonofadog sonny if your relying on either STATS or Mike Vick finishing games your in for a LOT of disappointment..all the STATS in the world can’t keep Mike in a game….face it he kept getting smacked so he took a seat, you should be used to that by now…And sonny when you look at the scoreboard all that matters of all those numbers is that your team has the most points scored…here endth the lesson.

Sonofadog, Too bad fumbles do not count in the QB ratings. The would put Vick’s numbers in the 80’s That was not much of a hit that put him out, Ryan took a full face to face head shot and did not go down.

Why or Why is Sam Baker still a starter on this team????? The O-Line better get rectified soon or Ryan is going to get hurt. How can he throw the ball effectively down the field for long gains when he’s constantly running for his life back there????
The offense is better when Ryan is allowed to call the plays instead of Mularkey. What an appropriate last name for his ability as an OC. : -)

Let’s be real about Mike.
When he was here he won one playoff game. That is one more playoff game than Matt Ryan who has been in the league 3 years and two games. Vick lost in the playoffs last year to the same Packers who beat the Falcons. When he was here those who loved Mike blamed the line, receivers, coaches when he failed. Some of you same guys would never apologize for Ryan using those excuses. There really is no need to bring up Mike’s name again until we face them again. The bottom line is some guys are just going to love or hate Mike or Matt no matter what they do. It is like the blog has been taken over by Sean Hannity and Jesse Jackson.

The NFL has made this once wonderful game booooooorrrrrrrinnnnnngggggggg. The silliness of the “protection” rules, the abhorrent officiating, instant replay stopping the game even ten minutes……..
Bring back the days when Matuszak and Lambert and Dobler struck fear in the hearts of even strong men.
This is game of sissy’s now. About as exciting as watching paint dry.

It is vile to continue to hassle Mr. Vick over those dogs when hundreds are killed every day by their owners. The Falcons played a dirty game, and they are truly the dirty birds. The Falcons won’t make it into the playoffs. If Vick stayed in the game, the Falcons would have lost! They should have won against a QB in his first professional game. That is what it took for them to win.

It seems to me watching the game that it was one of Vick’s own men that concussed him, not the Falcons. And though the Falcons won on an amazing running drive, there is still much about this team that would indicate that it could very well not make it to the playoffs. But a win is a win.

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised, that the cheers for Vick were overshadowed by the boos, 2 years ago I was digusted by half the fans in my section going bananas when he scored. This year I saw far fewer 7 jerseys and as I said but for a few misguided soles, people were cheering for the Falcons and jeering for the guy who threw his team under the bus

1. The Falcons won a regular season game last night;
2. A defense which yields 21 points in one quarter is not a good defense;
3. The outcome was reminiscent of 2010 (a W that could have easily been an L);
4. The effort displayed last night will be needed for the next 14 weeks;
5. Super Bowls aren’t won on a home field;

It seems that when Matt started to make changes to most of the plays on the last two drives, they moved the ball down the field and scored. Then there is Poor Sam Baker, two rough games for him I wonder if he is hurt or is he just being out classed. Defense still has some big problems with passes. I’ll take and enjoy the win.
