This is how it began. There'd be much more. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)
The first three touchdown drives required a total of 10 plays, which by Georgia Tech standards was positively ponderous. To score its next three touchdowns, the Jackets needed only six plays, and right about then you could hear the Jackets’ demanding coach grunting to himself: “That’s more like it.”
Six touchdowns. Sixteen plays, total. Think about that.
Think about the high-school offense that will never work in big-time college football — except when it stacks 66 points and 768 yards on a team from another BCS league, a team that not incidentally beat Tech a year ago. Think about what Paul Johnson has done with no Joshua Nesbitt, no Jonathan Dwyer, no Demaryius Thomas, no Anthony Allen. In three games, here’s what his spread option has wrought:
An average of 59.3 points and 675.3 yards. Think about that.
No, Tech hasn’t played the world’s most arduous schedule, but still … those numbers against air would be impressive. These have been compiled against opponents who come equipped with scholarship players and scouting reports, and it hasn’t mattered. When Tech takes the ball, it scores. Sometimes it scores so fast you’d swear you were watching a highlight tape and not a real game in real time.
Said Tevin Washington, the quarterback: “Sometimes we amaze ourselves.”
We’ve all seen Johnson and his offense at work. Even so, these three games have been astonishing. Three weeks running Tech has arrayed itself for the first snap, and three weeks running the first snap has yielded a touchdown: A 5-yard toss sweep against Western Carolina, a 59-yard pass against Middle Tennessee and now a 95-yard counter against Kansas. (Johnson: “We knew from last year that [the Jayhawks] would cheat to the motion.”)
In three games, Tech has scored 10 touchdowns on plays from beyond midfield. This is not the triple option as Darrell Royal and Barry Switzer knew the triple option. This is the triple option as reconstructed by a shrewd man who has taken a scheme and dragged it into the 21st century.
You can say what you will about Johnson, and much of it would be correct: He’s cocky, and he doesn’t care much about conventional wisdom or recruiting rankings, and he hasn’t yet won a bowl game at Tech, but … give the man his due. He’s a great play-designer, a great play-caller, a great play-tweaker. One PJ wrinkle, and somebody’s running for miles.
What transpired Saturday wasn’t quite perfection, but it was close. Tech had the ball 12 times. It allowed the clock to expire at game’s end. Of the 11 times it tried to score, it succeeded all but once. Of those 11 drives, the shortest netted 43 yards — and that was the one that ended with a punt.
Two backs broke 100 yards rushing. (Orwin Smith, who’d gone for 95 on the game’s first play, did it on his second carry, which represents the minimum number of attempts for breaking 100.) Two more went for 70-plus yards. Yet another had 68. Washington threw only seven passes, but averaged 41 yards per pass completion.
These were crazy numbers, and in the third quarter the whole thing got certifiably insane. Tech scored on its first snap of the second half, Embry Peeples swooping 63 yards. The Jackets needed four plays to go 74 yards the next time, Smith catching a play-action pass from Washington. Next possession: One play, one pass, one Roddy Jones touchdown. Up 24-17 at the half, Tech led 45-17 with barely half the quarter gone.
“As for us being a high-school offense … we just put up 700 yards,” Washington said. “If it works on this level, it works on any level.”
The 768 total yards? A school record. The 604 yards rushing? Ditto. But the goofiest number was this: Tech had the ball for 27 minutes and 37 seconds. It lost, if that’s the proper word, the time of possession and outgained its opponent by 406 yards.
Said Johnson, coming as close to gushing as he ever has or will: “We played fairly well the whole game on offense.”
Fairly well. Apt description.
I don’t know how good this Tech team is, and you don’t, either. (We’ll learn more when North Carolina arrives next weekend.) I don’t know if Johnson will win another ACC championship, and you don’t, either. But I do know this: The guy in charge can run an offense like nobody I’ve ever seen, and there’s not a five-star recruit in this mix. Just a five-star football coach.

Yeah the offense looks great but it has every year with the exception of 2010. Defense was pretty pathetic in the first half and there is no pass rush. Don’t see how this GT team can get past 8-4. Then again 8-4 is better than most predicted.

Well, the “high school offense” has been pretty successful in the past. It has been pretty successful this season. I would be willing to bet it will be successful in the future as well. CPJ has filled the offense with athletes, and they are looking very good so far. Next week will be a good measuring stick. The defense needs help though. Second half was better, but we can’t come out flat against good teams. GT will get as far as their defense can take them. Right, I’m not sure how far that will be. Next week should be interesting. Go Jackets!

Overall I was pleased with the special teams play and, once adjustments were made, the defense. I know the level of competition the last 3 weeks but to put up over 750 yards of total offense against any competition is enough said. Been watching the NC/VA game, NC’s d line looks good but if the o line, a backs and wideouts block like they did today it’s hard to envision this offense being stopped. I still think Coach Groh has some things about this defense he hasn’t shown yet, mainly because he hasn’t had to thanks to the “high school” offense. It’s fun to be a Jacket an right now and I look forward to the rest of the year. Mark, thanks for all the comments today!

Joshua Nesbitt was a WARRIOR and a great punishing runner, but he couldn’t hit the side of a BIG BARN. Tevin simply throws a very catchable ball!! Not a strong arm but he is accurate and puts the right amount of air under the ball………look to see if this is a fluke against three terrible defenses or not? UNC will be a lot better on D.

Was fortunate enough to be at the game….only negative thing I can say is that I didn’t appreciate the jerk two rows behind us using inappropriate language–especially since there were children around (including my 6 year old son attending his first GT/college football game). Some people are just rude. Other than that….604 yards rushing and 766 yards total against a FBS (D1-A) school from the Big 12 is pretty good. And yet the puppies from Athens get the headlines and the front pages….even though they played what many people are referring to as a “high school” team from SC. How many yards did they have? Hmmmm……..GOOOO JACKETS!

This is not a reason to predict a lopsided win for Tech over Carolina, but the Heels have not looked very good in any of their games this year.
Tech has been better in each game, and the special teams finally got to join the party. Also, Defense for the second half was great.
I didn’t watch too hard last year because the jackets were painful to watch. Are there new wrinkles in the offense? I think I saw several counters, tosses, and QB fake/reverse style plays that I have seen either sparingly or not at all over the past few years. Was that stuff new or did I just miss it last year?
Oh yeah, loved the passes straight over the middle to A-backs. Give lanky Stephen Hill credit as well–he didn’t have any bombs come his way, but he did a great job blocking downfield. Actually–Everyone did!

You can stop beating the Big 10 drum. The ACC has teams wanting to join, and it sounds like the teams that are there are committed. (They just voted unanimously to basically double the fee for leaving the conference.) The ACC signed a big contract with ESPN that they will renegotiate for even more money when the conference grows. Tech isn’t going to the Big 10.

For those of you who have not heard it yet. ESPN reports that Pitt & Syracuse have petitioned the ACC for membership. They also report that the ACC has been talking to other schools as well, but none were named. The Big East requires a 27 month notice of withdrawal and a $5,000,000.00 buyout. They also reported that the ACC now requires a $20,000,000.00 buyout. That makes it very doubtful that any schools will be leaving the ACC. ESPN did say that some Big 12 schools had been talking to the ACC. It appears that the ACC is trying to become the 1st super conference.

This is a good day, my Gators look like they will win the east and Tech is throwing the ball for touchdowns. The one I expected, but as the Tech game started too much adrenalin was pumping in Washington as he was air mailing every throw. Then they got back to run forcing Kansas to pull their defensive backs up and up the field the throws went and all right on target. If Tech’s offensive includes a potent passing attack, they will be very successful. PJohnson may not say it, but after last year someone got in his ear and said you must be able to pass, and now his team does. Fact is, sometimes today the team ran the spread offense extremely well, with the option and with the passing. This team is probably PJohnson’s most potent offensive team he’s ever coached.

Gatorman -
No one had to get in CPJ’s ear to tell him he needs to pass. Navy passed while CPJ was there and still does. Tech threw some passes while Thomas was here. Last year, we had a QB who couldn’t throw well and a receiving corps that couldn’t catch the ball. And most of the time our QBs did drop back, they had defenders on top of them almost immediately. Not a good recipe for a successful passing game. Actually, part of the reason we lost to KS last year was CPJ kept calling passing plays, and the players on the field didn’t execute them. This year, those issues appear to be fixed. Washington is definitely a better passer than Nesbitt was, and the receivers are doing a better job of catching the ball. Next week should be a good test of how much the pass protection has improved.

Hmm…….Auburn went down to an ACC team, the mighty South Carolina (LOL) just finally tied Navy!!! So much for SEC dominance of anything except the drive-thru! I’ve always said it’s a subpar conference riding on the coattails of 2 legitimately good teams. Take away Bama and LSU and the SEC is a complete joke and arguably the WORST BCS conference!!! And don’t you love the whole “moral victory” thing for UGA last week? I thought they were too good for that. It looks like S. Carolina is really no better than they have always been — it’s just that the SEC-Least is so pathetically BAD that they make S.Carolins look decent!!!LOL.
Went to the game today. Holy****!!!!! CPJ had the offense hitting on all cylinders. It was a beautiful thing to witness! I truly believe NOBODY could have stopped that offense today. When they are hitting the holes and making the blocks like they were today, they can’t be slowed. And kudos to the offensive line — that was an exhibition of how the blocking schemes SHOULD go. They could not have done any better. Were there ANY penalties on the O-line??? I don’t remember any. And Washington has FINALLY won me over. He made all of the correct reads and his pitch timing was amazing. Synjyn needs to learn to pitch instead of keeping it all of the time (Zenon had a straight shot at the endzone several times on the outside but Days wouldn’t pitch it out to him!), actually, Days probably needs to be moved to A-back, but that’s just my opinion.

I see no reason why these jerseys needed to replace the WC game ones. This article’s photo is the first I’ve seen of the “new” unis. As promised, I boycotted watching the game. To me the new jerseys are nothing but a glorification of NCAA athletics at my alma mater. This is not what Tech wants. They want players to graduate, not for them to go to the pros. “New” home game unis provide more of an advertisement, more visibility, to pro scouts. Those who came up with outrageous complaints about the O’Leary years jerseys that were never complained about back then compile a new Tech at home fan base, for sure. It’s too bad they could not accept what Tech had to entertain them with. They seem spoiled with modern entertainment such as HD tv, and now 3D tv. Also, they want to see how much they can take over at Tech w/o being PhD’s employed there to profess to them.

those pants on this article’s photo are not the same as the WC game pants; they are vegas gold, and the jersey trim is vegas gold; the home games were only going to have a change of the interior of the numbers; for the WC game, the gold color of the pants was darker; look, I’m sick of this glorification of athlete’s unis as a dandy would do; only dandies would want Tech to change the jerseys worn for the WC game; Tech should have kept the unis from the WC game to proceed in the plan for the home games this year, thus avoiding dandy contamination

dawg s**t, it’s not the alums, it’s the fact that other than alums and students, Tech lately doesn’t have a following. I have no idea what happened, because we used to have one of the strongest fan bases in the southeast. Leaving the SEC obviously hurt, joining the ACC didn’t help much (because of generally uninteresting opponents in the past—FSU and Miami and VT have changed that), and too many years with unfulfilled expectations. Well, that’s changed now, aside from last year’s anomaly, and Tech deserves much better support from the non-committed fans of college football in the state. HOPEFULLY consistency will increase recognition, reputation, and support, and I predict incredibly consistent teams under CPJ now that he has his players. And if Cuse and Pitt do join the ACC, that will necessitate a conference realignment which hopefully will put Tech, Clemson, FSU, and Miami all in the same division…..which is the way it should have been from the start.

I saw team discipline today. I saw a ton of downfield blocking. I saw a very disciplined offensive line. This team is well coached. I saw players score and hand the ball to a ref and trot back to the bench instead of bobbing their heads and pounding their chests. (AKA as “act like you’ve been there before”)
Furthermore, I love to see 2nd, 3rd string guys getting reps. When their time comes to step up, the learning curve will be flatter rather than steep.
There will be stumbles this season, but thus far…. an average of 575 yds/game… I can’t wait for next week.

Like the earlier poster stated it’s nice to see young men act like they been there before. Not that I am opposed to emotion when a player makes an outstanding play but like I’ve tried to teach my son, celebrate but don’t make a spectacle of yourself
I’m ot trying to say the young men are perfect but I definitely see a Team First attitude with this team.

from what I see, this GT team can put up 30 (at least) against EVERYBODY (and I do include you poodles) that they play. The true question is how much better can that defense get ‘up front’? you have talented ‘hitters’ and ’speed’ guys roaming in the backfield of Al Groh’s defense but who exactly are your ‘game changers’ up front in the DL and LB position? I think Groh would scheme circles around Grantham but Todd has some ’studs’ out there at the key positions and I’d give them the edge because of that if I had to bet my paycheck as of right now. That said, if these two teams were on the STOCK MARKET, I’d invest in GT until late November. Uga will lose at LEAST 2 MORE before they meet. GT could easily run their table.

this offense works great when the guys on the offense are way better than the defense. kansas is a joke and is no where near the defense it was last year. you only passed 7 times today and look for tech to maybe throw that many next game. unc will be a much better game to see where your offense is. but right now tech has played 3 nobody teams in which they were favored in all 3 games. tech could easly lose the next 4 games and lose them bad. the teams your playing next are so much better than the last 3. look what happen when navy was down 3 points late in the 4th..the game was over with 6 min left to play and they were only down 3 at that point..must suck to know you cant win a game with 6 min left only down by 3 because it takes 10 min to score 7 pointys when you play team with a top 10 def line.

How could you not have fun playing like they’re playing! LOL! The best test comes if and when the numbers are not quite as explosive but, to date, I see no signs of the discord that seemed to be evident last year. When CPJ commented earlier about not reaching last years team it confirmed what I saw on and off the field. What I am so impressed with is how the teams handles itself being as young as it is. The future is very bright I have faith in this staff that they will continue to recruit quality young men with high football iq.

Great article. How about this stat. Tech had NO 3rd down in the entire second half…I;ve never seen that!! And I dont know why we didnt go for it on 4th and 1 at the end of the first half. Easy TD. This team reminds me of the 90’s Neb Huckers and that’s not just cause we played a Big 12 team. I put 1500 on them this week and I can’t wait for Vegas to throw a 8 point game this week. I laughed during the Aub Clem game when the announcer said watch out for Clemson on Unc’s schedule!! Ignoring us when we were up by 47 points! Yes we tripled a 14 point line!! How’s that for a stat! LSU did not stop Tech. They won that game because Tech didn’t play worth a darn, offensively or defensively. UGA hasn’t stopped Tech yet; 4 turnovers by Tech last year led to 2 TD’s by the mutts that Tech would have scored had they not turned the ball over. And those turnovers were all unforced turnovers too…..sloppy play and poor decisions by a QB starting only his 3rd game. They didn’t stop Tech in 2009 either. If Nesbitt had been the passer that Washington apparently is; it would have gone the other way, even though Nesbitt missed almost a full quarter of play. Not moral victories, but definitely not convincing wins by the mutts. Like I said, Iowa is the only team to have stopped Tech’s offense.

Two smart aleck comments:
- You can’t win “another” ACC championship until you’ve won your first one, and last time I checked Johnson has zero.
- To the guy who says he’d like to see Tech do that against a real team like Coastal Carolina… you’ve already seen them do it three times against a team like that. Congrats on the victories over Larry, Moe, and Curly. Shemp is on deck to complete the grand slam.
And one serious comment:
The offense is no doubt fun to watch when its working. I don’t think a team can win a national championship with it because there are going to be 2-3 games every year of a potential title run where you are going to have to come from behind. And a run-focused offense is not going to get you there.

How can there possibly be any naysayers left when it comes to the spread option offense at “this level” ? When executed properly, this scheme is simply explosive. Yesterday, it was explosive from start to finish. There are times in the past when we saw snipets of that explosiveness, i.e. behind by 16 at the start of the 3rd in Athens in ‘08 and leaving the 3rd with the lead (and GT couldn’t throw it a lick then). I’ve said all along, if Tech will ever get the A-backs involved in the passing game, this thing goes turbo. That’s what we saw yesteday. You get defenders thinking run and pass and it get’s ridiculous.
If this offensive machine keeps humming and protects the ball, and the defense can get a few stops … there isn’t a game on the schedule Tech can’t win. Games against the tougher competition will likely be high scoring affairs regardless of who wins. If the defense can force the neccesary 3-4 punts a game, look out !

U, remember that Tech’s ability to recruit is limited by not only what degrees it can offer, but also its academic requirements for those that it does. Tech is not big time football and never will be until the State of Georgia allows it offer “Turfgrass Management” degrees to attract more academically challenged blue chip athletes. Even the brightest kids – - recent Stanford recruit – - that may want go to Tech have to choose Stanford because Tech does not offer a Communications major.
UGA has unparalleled advantage with recruiting. Tech is no competition for the best in-state athletes. Florida (UF, Miami, FSU), South Carolina (USCe, Clems(paw)n), Alabama (Bama, AU) all have comparable academics and programs to offer potential athletes. Tech and UGA do not.
Tech is also a public university and operates under the thumb of the Georgia Board of Regents that is dominated by UGA grads.
Tech will never have a top-10 recruiting class. Perhaps that is by design so that when UGA gets waxed again against SEC competition they can look forward to at least beating Tech…..

stinger..tech put up 512 yards last year on 92 plays for crying out lound..thats like 5.6 yards a play…nothing to get all excited about. uga on the other ran only 48 plays and gained a total of 425 yards. that almost 9 yards a pop. uga was not worried about losing to tech because once tech was down 10 points in the 4th qt it was over. even if tech would have tied the game uga was moving the ball at will and would have scored again anyway. tech just simply doesnt have the players to deal with the bigger and better college teams in football. they can only hope to keep it it close and only lose by 3-10 points. no way tech wins a national championship with this offense and with these players they might not even win an acc championship.

Mark, you should know by now that 5 star recruits are “recruits” and nothing more. It takes great coaching to take them to the next level. I’d rather watch a 5 star coach like Johnson coach his players up to the next level, than watch a team of 5 star athletes struggle. Someone said earlier that Georgia “has been wasting talent”. It is true, thus CMR may not survive even if UGA struggles to 6-5, 7-4. In thinking back to 1990 when GT won the National Championship, I recall a 5 star coach and team, not a team of 5 star athletes. You article was well written, and enjoyed. Go Jackets!

What a great win. To have been beaten by this team last year and then come back this year and totally anilate them shows how far we’ve come. Great blocking at the line of scrimmage and down field as well. This offense clicked as good as I’ve ever seen. And what about Navy. Same offense proved it can be run against anyone. Only 2 problems area’s I noticed that we have to really work on. #1 Our kickoffs have got to go further than the 10 yd. line. UGA will have a field day against us if thats the best we can do. I could only imagine Boykin running a couple back on us when we play them. Did look as if we changed kickers 1 time because the ball did actually go into the endzone. Kickoff coverage did look better than last year. #2 Pass rush has got to be better. It took Groth to long to make adjustments. Second half pass rush improved greatly. Good passing teams will pick us apart if we don’t improve in this area. Run defense played really good. Just a few missed tackles. All in all great improvement from last years team. And what about the GOON squad? Great blocking all day.CPJ has really recruited well on the O-line. Next week lets send a bunch of Heels back home Tarred and feathered. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO JACKETS.

Good article, Mark. I agree — this is as an astonishing offensive display as I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been watching college football a long time. There are many teams out there who’ve played a similar schedule and haven’t come close to this kind of production. It’s no fluke. Yes, the competition will certainly get tougher (staring next week) but no matter. Tech probably won’t win every game (I don’t think their defense is strong enough), but they’re hitting on all cylinders right now. Johnson has the players he wants in place. I’d like to know where those that were pontificating that this offense wouldn’t work at the major college level are now. They’re either dumb or naive (or both). The question is why more teams aren’t running it. I think the answer is that they don’t have the guts that Johnson has. And he has the one key ingredient of a great coach — he’s an innovator.
I’m a Georgia alum, but my Dada went to tech. I grew up a Tech fan and became the black sheep when I went to UGA,
But I still pull for Tech every game but one. And I’m truly impressed.

Uh, our starting defense has given up relatively few points, atl xmen. We’ll see how good they are as the season goes along. But, if your earlier comments mean anything, then the performance of our defense last year should be cast aside as it was our first in the 3-4.
Fair post, yearofthedawg. We’ll see whether or not we can throw against better defenses. I suspect we can. I don’t think we’ll score 60 a game, but we’ll score on almost anyone we play. As to the inability to come back, the proper way to analyze it is how often anyone else with a more traditional offense or a spread-based one that throws heavily comes back from those deficits. If you have facts on that, then we can discuss how much our offense hurts us in that respect, if it does at all. I will say that I also think it prevents us from falling behind by too many points usually, too.
The question for Tech since Johnson has been here is whether we can stop anyone. We’ll see.
Somewhere over the Dwayne Bowe

Correct, NC Dawg. The question has always been about our defense. It has shown no propensity for stopping anyone the first three years Johnson has been here. I’m cautiously optimistic about this year, but I’ll wait until November before announcing a conclusion.

At this point we should do well, but our defense has struggled. I will not give Al a big pat on the back until he proves he can run the defense. It is a 60 minute game, not a 30 minute. Good win by Tech but check out Miami over Ohio State and Clemson’s embarrassment of Auburn.
The ACC can compete. Pitt and Syracuse will be good additions. Personally, I oppose all of this
ridiculous mega-conference concept because it allows now only 1 ACC team out of 14 to get to a BCS
bowl. But if you have to do this to keep your conference intact it must be done. The ACC must stay strong. The PAC 10, Big 10 and SEC may think they can gobble up everybody but the ACC is saying no you can’t.

Unfortunately, defense requires big, strong and fast, all of which come with a 5-star pedigree. You can just coach up so far when you are at a physical disadvantage. The offense, however is a function of the system and the coaching. All that being said, I thought that the coaches really helped the defense in the second half and so long as they can be merely good Tech will have a chance against almost anybody. Kudo’s to the Tech defense…hard hitting and committed. That was the first time I can remember laughing during a football game at the absurdity of what I was watching. I don’t now how they will fare against a good physical defense with speed on the outside, but I look forward to watching those games. In fact I look forward to watching all Tech games and although living on the left coast will be there for at least one. I hope that the local Tech fans realize that the good athletes Tech hopes to recruit will respond to a great game day atmosphere and fill the stands to support this amazing group of athletes and their extraordinary coach. Oh, and BTW, from an old grad…trash talk is just that.

Bradley, you can’t have it both ways: one day Tech and the entire ACC are a weak and crumbling football School / Conference; the next day Clemson has POUNDED Auburn, Miami mops-up Ohio St., FSU goes to the wire with the 1# Sooners, the ACC becomes the Biggest TV-Market Conference in the country with the addition of Pitt & Syracuse and now Tech is an amazing football team with a “5-Star” coach. (Instigate – Pander – Instigate – Pander) that’s not a good sports writer. But, it is better than the alternative us “Atlantans” are left with – and that is Schultz – who’s just a fowl mouthed little prick all the time.

I was very proud of the jackets on Saturday and how they’ve been playing so far this season. Lets hope they keep it up as the schedule gets more intense. CPJ is truly a great coach, he’s balanced, disciplined and tough. He has had high expectations of GaTech from his start and we’ve seen alot of improvement. I’m a proud panther, a proud jacket and a proud Atlantan. Tech fans, let’s ignore the mutts until they come to town and show our support for our winning team in the meantime, because clearly UGA has the same type of fanbase they have always had. The only difference now is that everyone is taking notice of it because they’ve been loosing. If UGA brings the same team we saw in the 1st two games, they will not survive Johnson’s fury-he and the players want that win BAD so watch out mutts and Go Jackets!

Go JACKETS!

I haven’t seen GT come out in the 2nd half like that since the UGA game in 2008.
And I have NEVER seen GT’s offense executing at the level it has been this season. None of us ever have.

I never thought CPJ was “cocky,” just thought of him as a big grouch who is always in a bad mood.

768 yards a Tech record? What about Tech’s 1,620 yards rushing against Cumberland in 1916???
