Isaiah Crowell: It wasn't all (or even mostly) his fault, folks. (AJC photo by Jason Getz)
The Monday Heat Check arrives, due to the holiday, a day later than usual. Georgia fans might wish it didn’t arrive at all. Because it’s all about the Bulldogs.
Mark Richt’s nerve: It was in place. Georgia won the toss and chose to receive. Get After Their Assets, as the famous Bulldog slogan (sort of) goes. Trouble was, the players’ nerves were jumping all over the place. There was a false start before the first snap, another false start on third down and a delay of game before the punt. Heat Index: Richt tried to be cool, but his players were uncool.
Todd Grantham’s pass defense: Kellen Moore threw 34 passes. One was intercepted. (He was pressured and threw poorly.) Five were incompletions. Twenty-eight were completed. Georgia mustered no sacks. Heat Index: If this is aggressive D at its best, Willie Martinez is Buddy Ryan.
Mike Bobo’s offense: It managed 373 yards, which doesn’t sound so bad. But 167 of those yards came on three plays. (All resulting in touchdowns.) Georgia ran 60 plays and netted 13 first downs. It converted two of 13 third downs. Only one possession spanned more than seven plays, and it ended when Richt chose to go for it on fourth-and-one and Richard Samuel was halted in the backfield. Heat Index: A damp squib.
Isaiah Crowell: He rushed for 60 yards, which is only 24 fewer than Herschel Walker managed in his collegiate debut. But Herschel scored two touchdowns and trampled Bill Bates. Not really a fair comparison, I know — but so much hope has been invested in this latest New Herschel. Heat Index: By normal standards, Crowell’s first game was warm enough.
Aaron Murray: If you want to call it the worst game this gifted quarterback has played as a Bulldog, I wouldn’t argue. He wasn’t terrible; he just wasn’t very good. Heat Index: What’s the opposite of balmy? Tepid?
Alec Ogletree: He figured to be Georgia’s best defender this season. He broke his foot in the first half. He’s out at least a month. Heat Index: That cold chill? It’s traversing the spinal column of the aforementioned Mr. Grantham.
Georgia fans: They came to praise their team. Many left early. Some booed as they departed. Heat Index: A few of these folks seemed hot under their dog collars, if you’ll pardon the expression.
Mark Richt’s seat: He’s not going to be fired on Sunday if Georgia loses to South Carolina on Saturday. But losing to South Carolina could well convince Bulldog Nation that there will never again be great days under this coach, and once that happens there’s almost no going back. Heat Index: No warmer than a blast furnace.

Didn’t they say Saturday night that UGA has the biggest OL in the SEC? Didn’t I hear this morning on the radio that Murray was sacked 6 times, all on third down? Regardless, don’t fret Bulldawg nation, my OL coach, Joe D’Alessandris, is on the first flight to ATL to help out. Great! CG

If all the Georgia fans thought UGA was going to magically flip a switch and come out and beat a top 5 team in the country, that means you didnt watch UGA last year. One thing Richt obviously didn’t learn from Bowden was that no matter what class play your best players. Mitchell deserves to be starting, where was michael bennett, Crowell needs to be starting. How can Ray Drew not play one snap? Richt needs to play these guys and let the chips fall where they may. I would love to see Gary Patterson, Mike Leach or Kirby Smart if the AD decides to move on from Richt. Especially Patterson he built TCU with 2 and 3 star players I would love to see what he could do with the talent UGA brings in yearly.

If and buts…yes, my opinion would at least be tempered if we beat South Carolina AND built on that the rest of the year; however, I do not see that happening. There was next to nothing promising about our team outside of Boykin and a flash of what Mitchell and Crowell can/will be. Our lines and lack of creative play calling are a disease at this point. It is now over two full season’s and an eight-month off-season shake up to see the exact same thing. That is not going to change in seven days.
I don’t know who said it earlier, but the single best description of Saturday night was Game 14 of 2010.

Yeah we held Martin below his average…but here’s a newsflash….Lattimore is NOT Martin.
We had some big plays. But then Booboo forgot they worked and went back to the spread crap. These are the offensive geniuses that had Cam Newton pegged as a TE. Also that think that Crowell and MItchell should NOT start Saturday. Obviously talent evaluation hasn’t gotten better either.

Mark Bradley:
I wish it were true that Boise was just one game and that Boise is the best team that ever played college football. This weekend’s game isn’t bigger in my opinion because we don’t really have much of a shot at winning. There are too many things to fix to even have a chance to line up and play South Carolina.
If USC turns it over 4-5 times, we have a shot… really the season has already become just a death watch for this coaching staff. I hope that I am wrong and we run off a 4-5 game winning streak, but I just don’t think that is reality.
The most likely scenario is we get beaten by 2 plus scores and look bad again this week, Richt is then fired by Tuesday and we have an interim coach for the rest of the season, maybe Garner or Grantham. We then hire a coach in Dec or Jan and we start rebuilding the program to be competitive again in 2013.

my apologies to the Georgia fans for all the comments of GT and ramblinbuzz, from a Tech grad; they are nuckleheads, and I hope you will ignore them; I watched much of the game, and it appeared to me that Boise was just the better team; they played hard for 4 quarters, and Georgia seemed to not be able to match their intensity or desire. I also would wonder about Coach Richt’s coaching staff! Coach Richt is a great guy, but Georgia did not appear to be well prepared, and their offensive and defensive lines got manhandled. I would opine that it is more the players fault, than the coaches, because they are the ones out there between the white lines!

Dogs were too cocky concerning their passing attack. Too many long routes where Murray had to wait for things to develop. How many times did he get sacked for holding the ball for 4 seconds or more? WHere were the screen passes to backs and inside screens to wideouts? Ill conceived attack. Samuel has got to be the biggest waste of a physical specimen there is when it comes to running the ball. Huge body, blazing speed, and no yards.

The fact that Bulldog fans are concerned about a game against SOUTH CAROLINA says it all. It should’ve NEVER been that way, but you’ve consistently hired (and retained) overrated coaches. And this one is just the latest in a long line of Bowden coaching tree busts.

Do Grantham and Bobo ever sit in the same room and discuss overall game strategy with Richt?
Bobo-”Coach, we are going to run the no huddle.”
Grantham-”Really, we prefer ball control since our depth is depleted at many positions. More possessions for them equals a tired defense.”
Bobo-”Coach, we are going to run the no huddle.”
We stopped them the first 3 times they had the ball.
3 straight.
What did we do?
No points?
That’s where the game was lost.

UGA fans for the last 8 months:
Boise St has never beaten an SEC team.
Look at what happened last time we played them.
We have way too much talent for Boise to be able to compete.
Look at what we did to Hawaii, expect a repeat.
Look at how much our lineman weigh. We will push them around.
Boise St got lucky to win all of their other big games.
You guys are lucky that Boise didn’t run the score up on you. One day you will learn that scout ratings and riding the SEC’s coattails doesn’t win games.

It is gonna be a war in Sanford on Saturday and I am very worried for my Gamecocks as they did not have a crisp game either. The USC defense has me shaking my head…how does a team that is so “load” with defensive backs allow …completion after completion? Only in the second half did USC start getting some good pressure on the QB but he still got ECU into the endzone a couple more times. USC needs to settle down and execute the plan. Georgia is beatable but it will not be easy. I don’t care what the point spread is…since when has USC ever been favored over Georgia in Athens?? Never that I know of…I mean NEVER.
BTW, calm down about Richt he is not the problem…i said before it is Bobo and that new DC ….Grantham. Fix those to coaching positions and you will have big bad Georgia back in the saddle. ….but please no rush…i want USC to enjoy being the favored team….but USC must make it happen…you don’t earn respect with losses…USC must win this game and play well…I CANT WAIT.

9- Tackling was much better, Martin’s longest run was 7 yards, and he got that by stiffarming an undersized DB. Wrapped receivers up quickly, no long plays in passing game either.
10- Murray’s read were much better, Murray rarely threw to the wrong guy, he did have drops, and missed too high on 3 or 4 passes, but for the most part, Murray did a better job at seeing coverages.

Recruiting rankings don’t count as a portion of the score. Neither do off-the-chart marks on the eyeball test. If they did, Boise State would have spotted Georgia a three-touchdown lead Saturday night. Watching the players warm up left little doubt of this. Georgia looked like an NFL farm team. Boise State looked like a Mountain West team, and a recently minted one at that.
Of course, lofty recruiting rankings and All-Airport selections don’t measure the quality of a program. Wins do. Boise State grabbed another win Saturday, a 35-21 victory that gave the Broncos a 62-5 record under coach Chris Petersen. Yet still people refuse to believe.
Entering Saturday, a great number believed Boise State couldn’t come to the capital city of The South and beat an SEC team that closed last season by losing to Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl. For years, SEC elitists dismissed Boise State’s rise by referencing Georgia’s curbstomping of the Broncos in Athens in 2005. That day, Georgia — en route to an SEC title — showed Boise State how far it needed to go to reach elite status. The SEC apologists can’t hang their hats on that game anymore. They do, however, have another excuse.
The SEC is fine. Georgia is not.
That’s what they’ll say, and it’s difficult to deny after Saturday. LSU hung 40 on Oregon in a top-five clash. With the exception of South Carolina, which needed a half to get cranked before rolling up 56 points against East Carolina, the SEC’s best teams cruised. But Georgia hasn’t been one of the SEC’s best teams for a few years. So that’s what the folks down here will say as they continue to dismiss Boise State. Which is not a problem. The Broncos will keep smashing opponents with nary a care what anyone thinks.
“We’ve been around for a while,” said Boise State tailback Doug Martin, who ran for 57 yards and a touchdown Saturday. “I’m sure they’ve seen it. I just don’t know if they believed it.”
Despite its circus-play reputation — the hook-and-lateral masterpiece that helped beat Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl was actually named “Circus” — Boise State didn’t win with trickery Saturday. The Broncos simply dominated both lines of scrimmage and made precious few mistakes. If the coaching matchup had been a game of chess, Boise State’s staff would have won in four moves. (Hey look, it’s another Boise State receiver wide open over the middle eight yards from the line of scrimmage!) Georgia’s first possession, a three-and-out, included two false-start penalties and a delay-of-game flag. That about summed up Georgia’s discipline.
“They just beat us tonight,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said. “They were better than we were.”
Wait a second. Why do I smell the faintest hint of Sprayberry’s barbecue sauce? I think I’m blacking out …
I apologize for the interruption. This is the spirit of Lewis Grizzard. Since Andy wouldn’t have chosen to write for a living if not for my columns, I figured he wouldn’t mind if I hijacked one of his columns to get something off my chest. I watched Saturday’s game from a cloud located directly above Vince Dooley’s house, and I was mortified at what I saw.
The uniforms worn by my alma mater Saturday were hideous. They looked like something my black lab, Catfish, once threw up after he got into a pantry full of strawberry preserves. The silver britches my Bulldogs wear on most occasions are among the finest garments in sports. It’s embarrassing enough to lose to a team from Idaho. Must my Dawgs dress like clowns to compound the shame?
In my life, I offended many a dinner-party hostess by wearing Weejuns without socks. But I never allowed an apparel company to dictate my dignity. In fact, the only dealing I had with a clothier in my lifetime was my ill-fated attempt to convince Casual Corner to manufacture a line of sweaters conforming to the specific dimensions of Kathy Sue Loudermilk. I asked my boyhood friend and idol Weyman C. Wannamaker Jr., a great American, to assess Georgia’s sartorial horror, and he responded thusly: “I’ve been to three county fairs, two square dances and a Shriner parade. I’ve seen a chicken play the piano, a baboon that knew his ABCs and a duck fart underwater. But I ain’t never seen a uniform as ugly as that.”
… OK, I’m back.
Since I’m a card-carrying Internet writer, this is the part where I’m supposed to call for Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity to fire Mark Richt and then have Richt deported. But I won’t do that. Because if the Bulldogs can beat South Carolina in Athens next week, the pain of the Boise State loss would melt away as the Bulldogs stare down the SEC’s easiest schedule with the most important East division win already in hand.
The Bulldogs will have to play much better to stand a chance against the Gamecocks. Georgia’s offense Saturday consisted essentially of three big plays — an 80-yard touchdown run by moonlighting cornerback Brandon Boykin, a 36-yard touchdown pass from Aaron Murray to Orson Charles and a 51-yard strike from Murray to freshman Malcolm Mitchell, who split Boise State’s defense with 10 minutes, 15 seconds remaining to keep the Bulldogs within two touchdowns.
Rarely was a Georgia receiver so open Saturday. On the other hand, Boise State’s receivers — the ones who weren’t supposed to be able to fill the cleats of Titus Young and Austin Pettis — set up a base camp between the hash marks. Freshman Matt Miller, whom Petersen plucked from Helena, Mont., couldn’t believe how open he got on a first-quarter slant. That pattern resulted in Miller’s first collegiate catch, a 17-yard touchdown.
“It’s like your first kiss,” Miller said of his first taste of the end zone. “But multiply it by quite a bit.”
Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore completed 28-of-34 passes for 261 yards and three touchdowns, but he never completed a pass longer than 20 yards. He contented himself with exploiting the pillow-soft underbelly of Georgia’s zone.
“They play zone, you just take what they give you,” Moore said. “You move the ball down the field.”
Try as they might, the Bulldogs couldn’t keep the Broncos from getting open. Part of the problem, Boykin said, was Moore himself.
“He checks like that,” Boykin said, snapping his fingers. The other issue was Boise State’s offensive line, which rarely allowed the Bulldogs near Moore. “Just a combination of play-action and great protection,” Boykin said. “You can only cover for so long.”
A program that enjoys as many inherent advantages as Georgia can only spend so much time outside the ranks of the elite without requiring wholesale changes. The Bulldogs receive the bulk of the attention in a state loaded with football talent. Simply by signing the best 25 players in Georgia every year, Georgia should be able to compete for the national title on a regular basis. Instead, the Bulldogs are middle-of-the-pack in their own conference.
Sadly, some will still believe Boise State pulled off an upset Saturday. But that isn’t the case. After the Broncos sacked Murray twice on Georgia’s final possession, Boise State took over on the Bulldogs’ three-yard line with eight seconds remaining.
Moore took a knee. It was an act of mercy. Boise State didn’t need style points. It had proven itself the superior program long before.

They’ll never get rid of Bobo. He’s married to Barbara Dooley’s neice. The Dooley’s relationship to the University precludes replacing him. This incredible conflict of interest was set in motion the day Richt promoted him to Offensive Coordinator. This follows a troubling pattern of hiring and placing people in critical positions throughout the athletic department simply because they attended and or played for UGA. This includes, but is not limited to, Damon Evans. Bobo, Tereshinski, and now, Greg McGarity, who played a large role in Tereshinski’s promotion, primarily because they were at Georgia the same time ! McGarity also seems to have a problem recognizing that Richt and his staff’s lack of work ethic results in their failure to prepare properly for teams such as Boise. My God man, are you blind? When you think about it, it’s ridiculous that a program such as Georgia’s is run in this matter. It’s like a welfare agency. There’s more in-breeding up there than a Sonny Seiler Dog Kennel. I’m a GA fan and I didn’t really expect to win the game, I thought it was in the realm of possiblity though, what I did expect was to play well against them. The final score was not indicative of how one sided the game was. I figured the Bulldog nation would try to rationalize the loss by holding up Boise to be world beaters- very predictable. Boise is a great team but lets not get crazy here saying that they will play for a NC this year! Come on, man. Get real Bradley. Will you admit you were wrong when TCU beats them, considering that is the only decent team they play? Its hard to admit that the Dawgs just plain suck right now. Who would’ve thunk when you’re replacing literally every skill position but QB? And replacing your most talented defensive players. And to top it all off, your QB is not nearly as good as advertised. BSU is a legit top 5 team w/ plenty of talent & good athletes. UGA indeed has (raw) talent, but the coaches (especially OL & DL) cannot seem to get these kids to achieve that potential. CMB seems like a good fella (ala CMR) but isn’t an SEC level OC & is far too predictable. While the Dawgs have the (athletic) talent to achieve 9 wins, I’m doubting the coaching or on-field execution will happen to get their. It’s most likely a 7 win season (at this point). Let’s hope they prove me wrong.

Most reasonable UGA fans would have taken 1-1 after the first two games. The program still has a shot at accomplishing that goal. At best, at best this was a 9-3 team. Many of you seemed shocked the UGA was whipped by the #5 team in the country. Many of you complain about players acting as if they are entitled. Seems as if you guys act just as entitled. Just b/c this is UGA does not mean just because they show up they are guaranteed a victory. Its football boys and when you lose as much O as they did last year we should have expected some early struggles on offense. To bad we just had to face a damn stronge team to really expose that the way they did. Still tons to play for.

Richt no longer has any idea what he is doing and judging by his demeanor and expressions on Saturday and even in to last year I think he knows that. He looked like he was going to crap his pants before the game had even started. The calm under pressure Mr. Cool Richt that rose to prominence in the early 00’s is long gone. But people say “you don’t just forget how to coach.” Actually, yes you can. I would imagine that coaching football is most like any other profession. If you aren’t constantly evaluating yourself and putting in the time to advance your skill set you are going to get left behind. Its becoming pretty obvious that Mark Richt has been on autopilot the past few years. The game has left him behind and we need to move on without him.
We aren’t going to beat South Carolina on Saturday. You do not win big time SEC games with an offensive line that gets pushed around like ours got pushed around on Saturday. We cannot run the ball. The defense looked tired and out of sorts on many occasions Saturday. We just do not have a very good football team and haven’t for quite some time. If Richt hasn’t fixed it by now he never will.
Thanks.

I do have a serious question: how do you EVER get that thin at LB when you are Georgia? Or RB for that matter, but that can be explained at least a little by King and Ealey’s departures. Where is all of the depth when you have top ranked recruiting classes every year?
