Live from the Dome: UGA, Boise meet to decide fate of world

Georgia plans to wear new uniforms! Why did no one tell me? (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

The Georgia team is headed back to Athens tonight. The Georgia athletic director will wait until the morning. Said Greg McGarity, speaking Friday afternoon: “When we lose, I like to get out of town. When we win, I like to hang around and soak it in.”

Can we therefore assume McGarity believes his Bulldogs will win? “Yeah, I do,” he said.

As noted, I do, too. But now you’re asking: Doesn’t Utah State’s near-miss at Auburn today bode ill for Georgia’s chances tonight? (Utah State being a member of the WAC, which Boise State was until just the other day.)

Not really. Auburn isn’t nearly the same Auburn that won the BCS title. You might have heard this already, but Cam Newton and Nick Fairley are ensconced in the NFL. And Auburn did beat USU, albeit only just.

Georgia won’t suffer a national championship hangover, having not won of those since Jan. 1, 1981. Georgia doesn’t have a new quarterback. Georgia won’t be overlooking Boise State. (Kind of hard to overlook a team that’s favored to beat you.) The belief here is that the Bulldogs will play as hard and well tonight as they have at any time since the blackout night against Auburn in 2007. The belief here …

Well, you know what the belief here is. I like Georgia’s chances not just in this game but in this season. And it doesn’t hurt that Boise will withhold three players, two of them starters, from tonight’s tilt due to some sort of eligibility kerfuffle.

In a way, that shows how far Boise has come. The cuddly little Broncos just canned their AD because they’ve been charged with NCAA violations in five different sports, football included. And here we thought only BCS-level programs ran afoul of the governing body.

OK, enough fol-de-rol. I like Georgia tonight because I think Isaiah Crowell will go for 100 yards. (Which, to be technical, even Herschel Walker didn’t do in his debut against Tennessee. Herschel, who didn’t start, had 84 yards. And he did trample Bill Bates. And Herschel is here tonight to deliver the game ball.) I think the defense will pressure Kellen Moore enough to make him less precise than usual. I think Aaron Murry will win his first really big game.

Then again, I’m often wrong.

And with that, the floor is open for predictions, observations and jokes about blue turf.  My only responsibility tonight is to interact with you fine folks — I don’t have print duty, in other words — and I’ll be here until this one ends and Georgia has won 34-24. (Actually, I’ll be here all night even if Boise State wins 41-0. But I’m not expecting that.) Join me, won’t you? And I thank you, as ever, in advance.

Dawg Fan

Cheer up. Blame the whole thing on the previous administration, (that would be Donnen, right?) and tell everyone it would be much worse if CMR was not the coach. I think the Dawgs are becoming the equivalent of solar energy in the SEC. Looks great on paper but never seems to pan out. I still think the best idea is to give CMR a Chick-Fil-A franchise, and send him on his way. Just make sure those game uniforms from last night are properly stored in Yucca Mountain or blasted into space. I think a Russian basketball team would look good in those things. UGA football is strangely similar to the old East Germany. They say everything is fine, but you get the sense that this just a big charade, and as soon as the wall falls (UGA eliminated from SEC East contention) they will be heading for the exits. I especially liked the red seats last night. They actually looked like genuine fans late in the game. No truth to the rumor that there is a shortage of red paint in Athens this morning, and a large # of work release inmates at Sanford Stadium. As always, you still have the UF Zapruder film (Belue to Scott, ‘80, thats 1980 not 1880, although it feels like its been since 1780) and the old golden nugget, CMR is a great guy. He better be, with this bunch, they made need to add a third digit to the visitors scoreboard. At the end of the day, blame somebody, feel superior to GT, and remind yourself that 1980 did occur, no matter how far it recedes into your memory.

ill give you uga fans and even bradley credit you love your dawgs, no matter how bad they are. right up until the final minute you thought they actually had a chance to win. didnt matter that you were being dominated on both sides of the ball. everytime you had a drive they wiped it off the board just to let you know who was in charge. im mean really i think they could have put up 60 if they had gone all out all game. but in the end they were content to just slowly walk down the field and eat up clock. reality needs to set in for you and the rest of the nation. bsu, tcu and others can play with anybody, and the mighty sec isnt as dominating as you think it is. its going to be a long rough year so get used to the disappointment.

OMG- you UGA fans have made my day! It’s amazing that you continue to believe that UGA is new and improved year in and year out! ARE you kidding? I’m a grandma and I can call better plays than that-and under my supervision their would be no discipline problems either!

Upon further reflection I need to add the following:
1. Although most SEC games are televised on CBS, I agree that MSNBC would be a better home for the Dawgs right now. That way they don’t have to be concerned with things like viewers. This gives them time to work out the kinks, and avoid a televised slaughter at the hands of the SC Chickens.

2. Obama’s upcoming speech will include a new stimulus package aimed at improving Dawg offense. There will be a special tax credit for O-lineman who don’t jump off-sides, and receivers get an extra deduction for actually hanging on to the ball. Not sure if there will be a charitable deduction allowed for giving away those horrendous jerseys from last night.

3. Finally, Chick-Fil-a breathing a huge sigh of relief right now. The policy of being closed on Sundays is paying off huge, as founder Truett Cathy says, “after that embarassment in the Dome last night, if we were open on Sundays, that would be enough to make us close for a day” Chick-Fil-a will consider future sponsorship opportunities, but needs some guarantees to safeguard against a return visit by UGA and their halloween costumes.

I enjoyed reading most of the posts from Georgia fans last night. As a lifelong BSU fan, alumni, and Boise resident all I can say to Georgia fan is you have been introduced to the type of football BSU has been playing for years now. No we don’t have the opportunity to play great teams week in and week out but wish we did. All we can do is play the teams on our schedule that we are always trying to upgrade. Problem is nobody wants to come play in our house because of money.

Granted we don’t have as much money as you do but we have one of the best coaches in the land, one of the best QB’s in the land, and a work ethic second to none. Our athletes are just as good as yours, we are just as physical as you, and we are just as fast as you. Difference is our coach was better than yours and our team played better than yours did… last night. Tomorrow may be a different story but as for last night Boise was far and away the better TEAM.

Time to give the Broncs their due… they are a good team that can play with anybody… anywhere… anytime… Get used to it. Oh and I for one will be rooting for the Dawgs the rest of the season too!!!

My deepest apologies. I realize the fragile emotional state most Dawg fans are in right now. I get the whole flashback to childhood stuff “What? you mean there is NO Easter Bunny” I have been lied to all these years?” Reality comes crashing in, it doesnt knock on the front door.
Look at it this way. That model citizen Stephen Garcia will be coming to town, and if he is not arrested between now and kickoff, then perhaps something good will come of UGA vs USC. So mix up some homemade Prozac, go get stuck in traffic, and watch Cynthia McKinney videos on Youtube. Happy Labor Day

that loss to boise was a fluke—Ga’s looking ahead to south carolina and had trouble getting up for a team from idaho. Ga will beat south caroline in athens by 10. Take it to the bank.

DawginLex is a typical georgia fan.

He can dish it out during the best of times but he CANT take it!

He is also full of crapola when it comes to insider information in the uga athletic department.

Hahahahahaha.

Sorry to have to bust the ole street hustler here on these blogs, but I couldn’t stay silent any longer.

The guy never played a down in his life. I believe he’s gone down thousands of times but he never played a down of football in his life!
