Heat Check: UGA’s Boykin doesn’t let sleeping Broncos lie

Brandon Boykin shows the swagger. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

The Monday Heat Check comes to you a day late but not nearly a dollar short. We begin, as we increasingly do, with Twitter.

Brandon Boykin’s Tweet: The Georgia returner issued a challenge to Boise State: “Dear Coach [Chris] Petersen: I DARE you to kick to me. Sincerely, me and my Dawgs.” Boykin subsequently averred, also via Twitter, that he “meant no disrespect” and that “peeps should be scared to play the Dawgs.” Also: “We need swagger — don’t mistake it for anything else.”

Sorry, but this comes across as a little too much Chad Ochocinco to me. If you’re you’re the underdog in Saturday’s game and you’re coming off a 6-7 season, wouldn’t the better Bulldog course be to creep in — sorry to play fast and loose with my animals — on little cat feet? I doubt Boise is going to be terrified at the thought of facing the Tweetster, and if you have to rely on a gimmick for your swagger, is it really swagger at all? Heat index: Not cool.

UPDATE: Mr. Boykin, who I should note is a nice person and an engaging conversationalist and a darn good player, was kind enough to drop me a line regarding this post via Twitter. It reads:

” ‘Preciate that, Mr. Bradley. Enjoyed reading it :)

The Falcons: They’re 0-3 in exhibition games. Should we be worried?

Not just yet. They are, after all, exhibitions. They were leading in the first two games when Matt Ryan exited. But the third exhibition is generally considered the most telling of any preseason, and what was telling in Pittsburgh was this: Ryan threw 42 passes in a half and generated one touchdown and three field goals. The Falcons gained a lot of yards against a good defense but didn’t have much to show for all the movement. That’s a bit troubling.

Also: The secondary stunk. But that happens every preseason. Heat index: Lukewarm.

The Braves: Haven’t played since Friday. Have lost a half-game to Philadelphia. Are nine games ahead of San Francisco for the wild card. But there’s concern about Tommy Hanson. Heat index: Still hot, but they might want to slap a little healing balm on Hanson’s shoulder.

Georgia Tech football: The Jackets open against Western Carolina on Thursday night. Even Brandon Boykin couldn’t hype this game. Heat index: Frozen tundra.

MB’s predictions: I’ve made many for the coming season. To review: Georgia to go 10-2 and win the SEC East, Tech to go 8-4 and run third in the ACC Coastal, the Falcons to go 12-4, grab a wild card and play for the NFC title. Haven’t missed anything yet, I say (with a Boykin-like swagger). Heat index: So why do I feel a chill in the air?

Agree on the Boykin comments. Do your tweeting on the field, please.

I wonder what CMR thinks about that tweet…. wondering if it has him considering a twitter ban. I agree this team needs swagger, but why throw fuel on the fire for the other team.

Who cares?

College kid that showed no disrespect. Isn’t there something more interesting to write about 4 days before one of the biggest games this year for UGA?

RE: Nike “Pro Combat” Uniforms for UGA

Is it really fair to compare Mark Richt to Judas over this debacle?

How many pieces of silver do you think Nike gave Richt?

I agree with the tweet for one reason only: The fire and swagger must come from the players,; it will not be coming from CMR. It’s not his style to get fired up openly.

Don’t bash Boykin for showing some “swagger”. How many of you, including myslef, said the last few years that we wished UGA would show some heart, some fire….like when David Pollack, Thomas Davis, and Greg Blue were playing between the Hedges?!? It’s got to start somewhere and I’m glad these boys are hyped up like we haven’t seen since the times of the aforementioned.

I hope the Dawgs would NEVER let last year hold them back from letting it all out this year. DO you really think the players should let last year mold their thinking? Last year is last year. It’s done, it’s the past. It’s a new year!! A new day!! That 6-7 is over and done.

Coach should do something where they don’t have twitter…they are being such vampire suckers or whatever that stupid gimmick is..

Twitter and Facebook are not good for any of us. They are a disaster for a coach trying to keep a lid on a bunch of kids. Impossible to control. Now Boise has bulletin board material. Not good. Still though, once we hit em in the mouth and let Samuel slam into them a time or twelve, all that talking bravado BS should go right out the window.

Just when things seem to be going in the right direction. Leaves you scratching your head doesn’t it. Now the challenge is for Boykin to play mistake free football and not get his head taken off during the return game (I am thinking Mikey henderson Sugar Bowl type of hit). We will certainly see if he and his Dawgs are up to it. Saturday will sooon be here.

Is “Curious George is an idiot” really “Lenny” posting under another name and showing of the inability to correctly use punctuation at the end of a statement in true UGA graduate fashion?

Boykin’s tweets make him look silly. When you have the skills he has, it’s best to let your performance do the talking.

Is there going to be yet another blog today on the Philadelphia Eagles Quarterback and the new $100 million contract to spike end-of-the-month blog traffic like the AJC often does with that person’s polarizing status?

The Falcs in presason looked disturbingly like last season. They have trouble scoring TDs on offense and can’t stop the pass on defense. Not good.

The UGA football team had shown a remarkable improvement in discipline and maturity this summer – no stupid arrests, no infraction. We’ll have to see if Boykin’s tweet was a one off or a harbinger.

As long as I dont have to hear a song and dance about ” They are not better than us, we just did not play well, we did not play up to our ability.” Because in the past that was and has been our players excuses. The other teams that beat us, where not better, they just won.

Boykin…you put it out there. Now you need to back it up. And not on Twitter …on the field. If you are not in the game, you better be out there helping Mrs. Richt serve the water.Whatever it takes to get the job done.

6-7. Why don’t you just keep your mouth shut and try and win the game. Boise will be better than UCF…You can count on that. You can see that Richt has already lost his thugs for the season. I hope old Marky enjoys it though, it will be his last.

Something to look forward to: This would be in the category, “Who loves ya, baby?”

Question posed to 3 SI columnists:

“Do you trust Craig James when it comes to reporting on the Big 12?”

Mandel: “I wouldn’t trust Craig James to report on sixth-grade volleyball.

Staples: “No. But I don’t trust him when it comes to reporting on anything.”

Schroeder: “Does he report? I’m not sure how ESPN justified keeping him around.”

Nebraska,

You are on the UGA and Atlanta blogs so much, you might come to the opinion that Nebraska doesn’t have a Newspaper. Do you actually live in Nebraska, or are you as I suspect, a Tech. fan, displaying your envy of the UGA program once again?

Boykins comments are the kind of CRAP that CMR needs to stop…this from a team that embarrased us with a 6-7 season and LOST…(BOYKIN….HEAR THAT>>>>>LOST TO CENTRAL FLORIDA……DO US ALL A FAVOR…SHUT UP AND PROVE IT ON THE FIELD. MCGARITY NEEDS TO STEP IN AND STOP THIS KIND OF CRAP CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS DO THEIR TALKING ON THE FIELD….OURS SEEMS TO TALK THE USUALY SMACK BEFORE THE GAME AND GETS STOMPED IN THE GAME. I am a loyal UGA fan but maybe this team needs a good butt kicking to start the season to bring them all back to earth…..

Note to Boykin: When you and “your dawgs” quit embarrasing us UGA fans with 10-6 performances in the bowl game and start acting and playing like champions- then feel free to talk some smack. I am a loyal UGA fan but this is the kind of crap we are sick and tired of. This team has only proven they can talk alot of smack and hype……here is reality dude….10-6 loss to UCF….a QB that has yet to beat a winning team…….2-8 vs our biggest rival in last 10 years…..6-7 last year……need I go on Boykin?????????????

Cant Wait for Saturday!! You gotta love it when the other team starts jawing before the game, reminds me of the past three years with Oregon and VA Tech. Their players talked a lot of trash because they believe they are on a higher pedestal. Talking trash, probably better at that, unfortunately for them it didnt help them win the game….good luck boinkin
