Buzzworthy: SI’s Peter King picks Falcons to win Super Bowl

From a Sports Illustrated release. I don't believe this is a hoax.

From the official Sports Illustrated release. I have no reason to believe this is a hoax.

Last we wondered about the absence of a buzz regarding the 2011 Falcons. Perhaps this will get one started.

Peter King of Sports Illustrated picks them to win the Super Bowl.

Albeit in a roundabout way.

He has them going 10-6 and finishing second to the Saints, whom he also tabs at 10-6, in the NFC South. Then Ol’ Pete envisions the Falcons embarking on a Packer-like run: Beating the Rams, the Packers and the Saints — all on the road — to win the NFC crown and then taking down San Diego in Super Bowl XLVI.

We should take Pete seriously. Last season he had the Steelers and the Packers playing in Super Bowl XLV, and sure enough they did. And he and I are in agreement — scary for him, I know — regarding the Falcons being a wild-card team. (Though I have them at 12-4, not 10-6.) And I have the Falcons playing the Eagles for the NFC title, whereas PK has Philadelphia losing to the Saints in the NFC semis. So much for Philly’s dream team, huh?

SI’s NFL preview should be on the newstands tomorrow and in mailboxes soon thereafter, and Falcons fans are advised to lay hands on one. Curtis Lofton graces a regional cover.

i think its a fair prediction. The Falcons are a good team with a load of potential so there isnt any reason not to believe they could win it all

Hmmm, that is the ONLY I see the Falcons getting to the superbowl – if someone else does the dirty work for them. I just do not see the Falcons beating Philly in an NFC Championship game. Until ATL can show it can win against them, I don’t see it. Hopefully the SAINTS will beat Philly and then we beat the Saints. Did strike me as kind of odd seeing the RAMS in the playoff equation. Thats been a while.

Sorry. I stand corrected. Richie claims coveted kudos.

Ok, better now. Hard not to think that one day Marion Campbell, Hugh Millen, John Settle and Charles Dimry are going to show up and start laughing at us all telling us how this was al just a dream. These are the Falcons we are talking about! Thank you Arthur Blank!

They gotta play the games either way. Hopefully last season’s Packers loss will remain fresher the the Falcons’ memories than any hype or buzz surrounding them. Teams that believe their own press have a tendency to become complacent.

What is behind his prediction? Does it mean we go through the regular season with the “click and dunk” offense and then Mr. Blank and Mr. Dimitroff tell the coaches to let Matt Ryan free and stop wasting first down runs that gain one yard with MT?

on another topic….Vick….$100 million….$40 guaranteed??? Are you serious???

HUGE . HUGE risk…..especially with that crappy O-line. I’m predicting he will take a major step back this year….if not seriously injured. Wish him the best, but he will be much more of a marked man this year….

Falcons aren’t beating Philly, Saints or Packers….the only way they win is someone beats the top tier teams for them and they run through the backdoor to the Super Bowl.

The Falcons and Chargers in the Super Bowl, huh? Why not?

My only reservation is more of a dread than anything else.

Those in the national sports media I see as Falcons haters – Little Skippy Bayless and Howard “The Toad” Smith – both of ESPN, the all-encompassing, to name two – are praying for our Birds to drop like yesterday’s breakfast behind an elephant.

If we don’t live up to the expectations/ hype, those two nimrods, among others, will jump on our case like Kim Kardashian on a black guy.

In the meantime, Skippy will sculpt his eyebrows and fuss with his hair. Howard will polish his head and sit on his lillie pad, seething with his envy of Michael Smith.

I guess I’ll just try to enjoy the respect our Birds have garnered from Peter King. Damn the consequences.

I have a feeling that we’ll lose at least 1 more game than expected due to our new Punter. Seriously.

How high will they fly?

August 30th, 2011
11:50 am

They will only go as far as the defense improves. If you can’t stop the run or the pass you won’t last. The offense should be better but it won’t matter without a much improved defense. The secondary looks suspect already. Here’s hoping they prove me right on the improvement and wrong on the secondary. And what’s this $100M for Vick? A lot of people are going to be sadly disappoinited on their return on investment I am afraid.

Ryan (#2), Moore (#25) and Spoon (#56) will need to come to play for this to happen…

P.S. #24 also will need to become ready by game 8. Only time will tell.

At the risk of sounding like Mr. Hand in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Is Peter King on dope? Has he watched when the starters have played this preseason? The secondary is horrible and if we keep trying to throw to receivers where you can’t even see the color of their jersey because so many of the other teams guys are surrounding him then that is going to come back to haunt them as well. If they were playing Stone Mtn. High I would take Stone Mtn. and the points.

And to everyone crying about the secondary – the secondary looks suspect because we’re playing to Nickle corners in the primary corner positions. When Dunta Robinson is back, you’ll realize how big of an asset he really is.

Peter King is a idoit. He doies not no about the history of fist round busts the Falcons make ever year. He must of had not watched the Flacons play the other night and see how bad Witherspoon played. The same 4 Perrier Jerry……Oh and Juliet Jones? Droped a shure TD pass. At least Jamaal Ansderson did not stink it up…..Oh yeah….He not hear N E more! LOLOLOL!!!!!

As a wise man used to say, for what it’s worth: “As bad as those numbers are, a closer look at the metrics shows that Atlanta is actually in terrific shape on defense and could be on the verge of becoming one of the best defenses in the NFL.”
