Heat Check: UGA’s uniforms are hot, as in ‘Burn them now!’

Aaron Murray leads Georgia onto the field for its season opener.

Aaron Murray leads Georgia onto the field and boldly proclaims, "Goldar -- er, Boise -- you're going down!"

The Monday Heat Check begins not with a player or a team but with the latest in fall clothing. Anna Wintour has nothing on us.

Georgia’s uniforms: They’re new. They’re different. They’re horrible. The good news is that we’ll see them for only one game. The bad news is that the game will televised. Heat index: They’re sure to be a hot item at the thrift store as of Sept. 4.

Georgia’s ranking: The Bulldogs are No. 19 in the preseason Associated Press poll, which is pretty darn good for a team that went 6-7. They’re ranked ahead of Mississippi State and Florida, to whom they lost, and Auburn, to whom they also lost and who went 14-0. Heat index: Yeah, but have the voters taken a gander at those Pro Combat duds?

Georgia Tech’s ranking, or the lack thereof: Forty-eight teams drew votes in the AP survey, the Jackets not among them. Heat index: A cold front has settled over the Flats.

The Falcons: They’re 0-2, which must mean they stink. But wait a doggone minute. In exhibition games, the score when the first starting quarterback is removed is the only one that matters. (I’m serious about this.) Using that barometer, the Falcons are 2-0. Heat index: Doctor, chill pills for everyone!

The Braves: Don’t look now, but after a 6-1 week they’re closer to first place in the National League (6 1/2 games back) than San Francisco is to them in the wild-card race (eight games). Heat index: Doctor, could we have an outbreak of pennant fever on our hands?

Everyone I’ve talked to thinks that the uniforms are ugly. The biggest problem is that its too much solid red with the red jersey and pants. If the pants had been silver, it might not look too bad. But the multicolored face mask is also hard to swallow.

Maybe UGA figures that if their look makes Boise St. players want to puke, then they just might have a chance to win the game.

Do you think Cox would have kept playing Heyward and would have kept George Costanza on the bench? I think Fredi has been, for the most part, awful, but keeping George in the lineup has been a great move. Cox would have kept plugging Heyward and his Mendoza average in there everyday. Why couldn’t we have gotten rid of that old fool years ago?

I don’t care for the uniforms. You just don’t see the bedrock college football teams playing gimmicks with uniforms. I like the fact that Michigan, Ohio State, Alabama, Penn State and others have kept their uniforms consistent pretty much since they switched over from leather helmets (okay, maybe not quite, but close). I’d much rather see Georgia do something innovative with third-and-long defense or utilizing some of our team speed with creative plays on offense than spending energy picking out new threads every time a big game comes along. But I’m sure some big $$$ changed hands for UGA and BS to wear them for this game. Oddly, I couldn’t find anything about the BS uniforms in their media outlets.

Mark Richt must have a crystal ball, or at very least really, really thinks he has an awesome team to risk his career on these hideous uniforms for this make or break game for the University of Georgia Football Program. Yes that is right, every game that UGA plays on the field this season is the next make or break game for the program. UGA Football is at a crossroads, and I have been told over the weekend by a large Hartman Fund contributor that after Richt’s arrogant remarks toward the Bulldog Nation about the uniforms, that the leash just got shorter. I know that the players love them, but then the players are of the Power Ranger age, but most of the contributors are of the thinking that the players have not even earned the right to have the storied “G” on their hats, much less get new Power Ranger Pajamas.

Bottom line is that if Richt loses this game while wearing these pj’s, the noise is going to get loud imediately. This would be the most embarrassing thing that Richt has pulled yet. This season’s schedule is by far the easiest in Richt’s tenure, and an East Championship and a return to the Dome is going to be very important for Richt’s job security after this season. Richt needs to begin to be a little more arrogant with the competition, and a little less with the Bulldog Nation.

I watched the national championship game last season (Auburn vs. Oregon) with a bunch of UGA friends. And when the Oregon players did that little thing with the gloves where it made an “O” when they held their hands together just right, one of my friends said: “You just watch. Mark Richt is going to wet his panties wanting to get some of those for Georgia.” I thought he was crazy, as much as we have embarrassed ourselves in the last few seasons when we’d make a big deal over new uniforms, or a special shirt color, or “black out the stadium!”

I do hate the UGA uniforms. But it’s only for one game, and NIKE is the one who pushed it…so to be fair, we can’t really blame Mark Richt. It is just a damn gimmick, but this time (for a change) it’s not HIS gimmick. I do wish he didn’t seem so excited about it, however.

Please have the team ready for the game, Coach. Let’s play hard from the opening kickoff, OK?

@ Beast from the East here is the real story.. In 1963 after becoming the Bulldogs’ Head Football Coach, Vince Dooley redesigned the football uniform choosing a red helmet with a black “G” on a white background as the dominant feature of the new uniform for the 1964 season.

He discussed with his staff that a forward-looking “G” would be an appropriate emblem for the helmet of the Georgia team. Dooley had just hired John Donaldson, former Georgia player from 1945 to 1948, as backfield coach. John was keen on the idea of a new image and volunteered his wife, Anne, who had a BFA in commercial art from UGA to design a logo for the new Georgia helmet with the general specifications Dooley had outlined. Dooley accepted Anne’s original “G” which fit his vision for a forward look to Georgia’s new emblem.

Since the Georgia “G”- though different in design and color- was similar to Green Bay’s “G”, Coach Dooley thought it best to clear the use of Georgia’s new emblem with the NFL team. Athletic Director Joel Eaves called for permission which was granted. However, since its inception in 1961, the Green Bay “G” has been redesigned several times and now looks like Georgia’s original 1964 “G.” Georgia is proud that the Packers apparently liked the special nuances of the Bulldogs’ forward-looking “G.”

Georgia’s oval “G”, eventually replacing Georgia’s old block “G” as the official UGA symbol, has stood the test of time. It made its first appearance in the opening game in 1964 and was an immediate hit with the Georgia fans, especially after Dooley’s first three teams were so successful–highlighted by the 1966 SEC Championship.

The answer is both teams had it first. Green Bay used the oval “G” first while Georgia was using more of a block letter. Georgia redesigned theirs (with a commercial artist in charge of “branding” the emblem) and it was a close match for the Green Bay “G”. They even rreceived permission from Green Bay to use it. Then Green Bay redesigned theirs, and it shifted away from the oval “G”. Later, Green Bay went back to the oval “G”, and the few distinctions between the original Green Bay “G” and the sleek Georgia “G” of the 1960s were eliminated. So basically, Georgia came close to Green Bay’s emblem with a slightly different “G”, then Green Bay eventually switched to the same “G”. Neither is generally considered a coy or rip-off. Both franchises seem to enjoy the emblem, though.

Vince Dooley asked permission to use the “G” and Green Bay obliged. For the first 25 years the G looked pretty good, especially in Jax. The last 20 years, which is probably all fl fans want to remember, it has not looked too good. If I were the head coach, I would pull a Paul Dietzel, and come up with a new logo and copyright it and live off the royalties.

Leave the uniform design to Oregon, they got it right.

The new uniforms kinda look like power ranger outfits It is somewhat ironic that last years performance was very cartoon and child like. The players have got to show up, no matter what. If having a different uniform gets them jacked up, let them wear it.

But the way it was done against Auburn in 2007 will never be replicated.

I can’t say that I am a fan of these uniforms–but we can only blame Nike for them. And both teams will be wearing them and ONLY for one game.

Frankly, I am a bit weary of the tinkering with the uniforms/helmets etc. The first time with the black jerseys was interesting but after that the luster was off the pearl.

The only thing that matters is coaching, talent and execution.

Et tu, Bradley? You guys simply can’t get enough, can you? Anything that will give ‘The Nays’ an excuse to crawl out of the woodwork is all you care about, ain’t it? And by ‘The Nays’ I mean those, usually trolls from some other Southern institution, that are here simply as an opportunity to bash Georgia…those that have for reason’s of their own decided that Mark Richt ain’t worthy and figure that if they ‘keep the heat’ on him somehow an otherwise logical-thinking, class-act like McGarity will throw him overboard just because some neanderthals’ (oh yeah and some arrogant rich guys/beer and liquor distributors), say so…and those that simply can’t grasp the concept of ‘progress’ and attribute the downfall in society to a certain minority – unless, of course, they can play football or basketball better than those other guys’ guys. You take away all those and whataya got? Reasonable people hoping for the best for their alma mater…or yeah, and a pretty boring blog too, no doubt.

Alright fellow UGA fans, heres the skimpy on why we allowed NIKE to design us new unis. Do y’all have any recollection of us cancelling the home and home with Louisville? This uni is one of the stipulations. Who do you think gave us the money to cancel? Who do you think orchestrated us playing an over-hyped smurf team in essentially a home game? As much as I don’t like the unis, I sure do like what nike did for us, they gave us a media darling to destroy on national TV. What will it look like when we beat them by 14+? Two top 10 teams playing in Athens the next week and ESPN on campus.

Nike gave us the opportunity to become a nationally recognized power by beating BOISE STATE!!!! All we have to do is beat Boise and we are back in the spotlight?!? Give me that any day of the week and twice on Sunday!! They are gimmick team, playing on a gimmick field, with gimmick plays, playing against a SEC team and the gimmick team is favored!!!

There has been so much laughing going on the past couple years that Coach Richt better have some big wins ahead or he might be the one everybody is laughing at soon. Coach Grantham was about the sixth choice when we were hunting a DC but he may be in the running to replace Coach Richt sometime this season. $750,000 is a lot of money to pay an assistant coach that gives the choke sign to players on the other team.

BG – Most of us are perfectly pleased with the OLD uniforms. Don’t say some people will never be please.

They are horribly ugly, and the red tone doesn’t match the UGA red. It’s not a small shade off, it’s about halfway to vibrant pink. Not good for a team playing a game where fear is a key factor.

The players and everyone on here understand that people will say what they will say. I believe for the cost of a paper they expect a higher standard from you.
All too often, you fall below that standard. If you could upload a pic on here, it would be apropos to post up a pic of Bozo. That’s all that would need to be said about your reporting.

The entire bulldog nation should not tolerate a news “reporter” who openly mocks its quarterback by name.
“Aaron Murray leads Georgia onto the field and boldly proclaims, “Goldar — er, Boise — you’re going down!”
I would say a public apology is in order to the Murray’s and the University.

The wife’s comment when she saw the bizarro unis on the news was “Hey, that looks like a Power Ranger!” I already have to explain too much to her regarding UGA sports, my affiliation to UGA, my affection for UGA, the dog, my dislike of the Head Coach–why do I now have to explain why my alma mater is deliberately attempting to look like dorks when they take the field? Yes, it is only one game. But why? Not enough scooters to go around? Not enough without licenses? Can’t we just have a normal, peaceful, extremely successful season without some ying-yang? Richt gotta go!

Why in the world do grown men care about what football players wear on the field for one game?

Power Rangers… That’s hilarious. I think that black pants would have been better. Mostly I don’t care about uniforms.

You have to wonder about how any team with so much tradition, could have fallen into a marketing fiasco like this. Those Nike unis probably deserve an NCAA investigation for excessive pure ugliness.

Who was behind this insult? Our former and disgraced AD? ESPN? Somebody has to pay!

New uni is a disgrace for UGA. Is it really all about money? Will we dump tradition to the highest bidder? For everyone who thinks this is a one time thing just wait you will see this time and time again in the future.

The uni I like best were the red pants and white top. I will never forget how good Hershel looked in that uni. I think it pumped up the whole team and look at what those guys did.
