Crafty PJ plans to coach this season from the center of the field. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)
The media assembled in Pinehurst, N.C., picked Georgia Tech to finish fourth in the ACC Coastal Division, which includes six teams. Me, I’d bump the Jackets up one spot. But maybe that’s just me.
My rationale: There aren’t many (if any) unwinnable games on Tech’s schedule. The Jackets don’t play Florida State, which stands to be the ACC’s best team. The toughest conference game — against Virginia Tech — will be played here on Nov. 10, which is a Thursday night. The second-toughest figures to be against Miami, and the Hurricanes are in transition yet again.
The ACC media picked the Coastal this way: Virginia Tech, Miami, North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Virginia, Duke. We can all agree that the Jackets, who play Duke in Durham, shouldn’t lose that game anywhere. Carolina remains under a cloud and has lost a ton of talent, some of which was ineligible last season. I like Virginia coach Mike London, but his team won one ACC game — against Miami, a result that shoved Randy Shannon out the door — last season.
I know what you’re saying: Georgia Tech isn’t exactly brimming with talent. You’re right. It’s not. But here’s where I’m guessing Paul Johnson’s system makes a difference. PJ in Year 4 should be able to outcoach a lot of ACC folks. I’m not suggesting Tech will crack the Top 25, but I can’t see another losing season, either.
Me, I’d say the Jackets will run third in the Coastal (ahead of Carolina) and finish 8-4 overall. But again, maybe that’s just me.

Tech has some real problems. Don’t we all, but the QB position is very very important to that offense…and if you know Johnson, Offense it what keeps them in a game.I think they have problems at that position, more that the comments following mine will admit.

this team has a greater outlook as far as character and fire as opposed to last season. Yes, there is a drop in talent, but CPJ has never had the best talent available to him. He coaches players up and gets more out of them than many thought was there. I think you will see a very determined GT team this year. Whether or not that means alot of wins is still debatable. But I love the way this team has come together this offseason…

Tech is not better than Virginia Tech, Clemson, North Carolina or Miami in talent level. Those are 4 losses in the ACC right off the bat. That would mean you are 4-4 in the conference and likely 4th behind Virginia Tech, North Carolina and Miami in the division.
Virginia Tech’s defense is better than Tech’s offense. I believe this is where GT’s issue will be.
North Carolina was one of the most talented teams in the ACC but injuries and suspensions decimated them in 2010. All those talented backups and younger players were forced into action. The ‘Heels should be an 8-9 win team again.
Miami has 20 scholarship seniors. Of those, 20, 17 are “key contributors.” Of those 17, 13 are starters. More experience and more talent.
Georgia Tech fans should expect to win 7 games and keep their bowl streak intact. To say there are no unwinnable games on the schedule is comical.

@JB… that is fair to say of the QB’s. They do indeed need to step up their completion %. I think if they put in a good short pass package to the WR’s and AB’s, this could very well happen. They still have to prove it on the field that they can get it done, so no arguement from me. Special teams and TO’s will also be an important part that they will need to improve. Alot of questions, but this team is working together really hard to improve those from last year..

The offense is such a system, that if we focus on limiting the turnovers, we’ll be just fine. There are a lot of athletes on this team. The key to this season, in my opinion, is the defense becoming more familiar with the 3-4. The defense is young, but the likes of Young, Sweeting, Johnson, and Reid in that secondary could be shut down.

@GstateBen… Tech has hardly ever had the most talented team on the field. You have to get your head out of the Scout and Rivals stars. We beat Miami 4 years in a row with less talent. We had beaten CU many games in a row including the ACC championship game (yes it still happened) with less talent. We have beaten UNC the last TWO years in a row after they creamed us in Chapel Hill in ‘08. We have stood toe to toe with VT ever since PJ came on the scene and had them on the ropes before Nesbitt got injured last year. So to just say that the most talented team on paper should win is very shortsided….

The plus is no sure losses on the schedule.
The bad (possibly), A qb that played ok to finish the season but doesn’t have much of an arm and looks frail for someone that may carry the ball 200 plus times.
A Def that hasn’t played well in years and may not have the talent at some positions to improve much.
Special teams that are “special”.
If everything breaks our way, which is unlikely, 9 wins if not 6.

If the Offensive Line can stay healthy, then the GA Tech’s Offense should be successful next Fall. I say this because I think their QB will work itself out by the 4th game as both Washington and Days should get a lot of snaps in the first 3 games and the better game-time QB should become obvious.
I also believe GA Tech’s Defense is being underestimated for this coming season. With a full year of Coach Al Groh’s playbook and personal “tutoring” under their belt the Jacket Defense will be more confident in their assignments and be able to play without thinking so much. Also, since the team has had a lot more time to work with the new Defense, a lot more “wrinkles” will be called rather than the plain “vanilla” (base) 3-4 Defense run last season. Finally, players have “adjusted” their bodies and positions to better play in the Defense this 2nd season.
Special Teams is the Wild Card. Replacing their Field Goal Kicker, who hit some critical ones for the Jackets over the past few seasons, with an unknown, could go either way; does he have the range, accuracy, and then”nerves” to handle the responsibilities successfully? Kickoff and punt coverage have been atrocious – any improvement would help GA Tech’s Defense. Ga Tech’s punt return team with Tarrant looked good, but when he was out, it was bad. Well, as we all know, Jerrard left early for the NFL so the Jackets have a gaping hole to fill. Finally, the Jacket’s kick off return team also left a lot to be desired. If the punt and kickoff return teams cam improve, then GA Tech’s Offense will be in better field position, under less pressure, and more poised to score points.

I agree with Brent Cunningham about the qb. He’s too short. Now Brent Cunningham was short, but he was on the track team as a sprinter as well as the football team in the ‘71-2 seasons, and he broke alot of tackles way downfield right up the middle to score on a long run or two. If Tech’s qb could run like him he’d be a good runner like Nez was, but he aint’ no Nez at all. I’m curious about SlimJim’s ability, who outplayed Washington in the Spring Game. If SlimJim is purported to not know the mechanics of the trip op, then we gotta call on Vad Lee from the Baby Jackets.

Brent Cunningham was short, built low to the ground and therefore hard to tackle. He was about the height of Ben Vaughn on the track and football teams who held the world record in the 100 yd dash and the 220 yd dash around the ‘71-2 football seasons. Vaughn broke the record of the black power saluting John Carlos who received the gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Mexico City saluting with his head down and black right fist held up during the playing of the Star Spangled Banner. What is this non-sense about having no talent? I might agree that we have little proven talent, but we have a lot of potential at a lot of key positions. IF a few of these guys like Hill and Peters step up and play to that potential we will be fine. Then these same “journalists” that are spewing this popular opinion will be voting them All ACC in the poll that matters. You know the one at the end of the year.
This actually reminds me a lot of the first year under Johnson. When everyone, I’m looking in your general direction Sports Illustrated, had us picked behind Duke in the Coastal. They said we didn’t have any talent on that team either. You remember, the team which produced Johnson, Burnett, Morgan, Dwyer, Nesbitt, Jones, etc. and finished tied with Virginia Tech for the Coastal division championship.

Florida did the same thing but with talented athletes and not players who wouldn’t play at any other major d1 school. Will y’all fire cpj if he maintains his downward trajectory? We at UGA will fire cmr if he doesn’t win 10 games or 9 and one is against Florida.
Here’s a little bit of knowledge for you yechies: We fire our coach for losing to tech but give them a contract extension for beating Florida. Why? Not brimming with talent might be overstating what PJ has assembled at tech. What has Pj ever done on a major college level, 1 win vs Vt and 1 vs Uga. Beating a 9 loss ND team while at Navy? 0-3 in bowl games , some system. Service academy offense, 1-5 to end 2010 and more of the same coming in 2011, perhaps some early season success against the dregs on schedule. Downhill fast after Kansas.

GT Offense will CLEARLY be 1 TD better in each game in 2011, than it was in 2010.
GT Defense will CLEARLY be 1 TD better in each game in 2011, than it was in 2010.
GT Offense will gain 1 more TD per game. GT Defense will allow 1 less TD per game.
A similar 14 point “difference” in 2010, and GT would have been 9-3,
with added wins over Kansas, Clemson, and UGA.
In 2011, GT could go 10-2, with losses to Miami and either NCSU or Clemson.
Perhaps Miami and Clemson in back-to-back losses.
In 2010, only losing Nesbitt kept GT from DESTROYING VT in Blacksburg.
and mopping the field with UGA in Athens.
I’ll stick with my forecast.

So, first, I will say that I am not predicting some crazy, huge championship winning team. We are not at that level yet. But honestly people, listen to yourselves. If you think this team will be as bad as last year please get off of your high horse. Look at the schedule first of all. As much as some of you will argue, every game on the schedule is easily winnable. VT? Breaking in a new defense and QB. Miami? Brand new coach and not much continuity there. Clemson? Last I checked they went 6-6 just like we did. UNC? If the NCAA is fair at all the hammer they drop on them will be crippling. I can keep going with every team, but my ultimate point is this: We can easily win nine games this year. Not saying we will, just saying we have a good shot at going at least 9-3.

Tech will surprise a few, but the missing impact of a few outstanding players from the Gailey era in the Paul Johnson offense will be more evident than ever. Nesbitt was incredible in the system, limiting turnovers and constantly getting positive yards when most QBs would take a loss. “High School Offense” continues to be the number one rushing offense in the country and Tech completes two more passes per game. Top that with a better defensive line and overall defense (the main downfall last year and even the last few years) and Tech will win the Coastal and “will RUN THIS State” again too. The concern is special teams. Coach Johnson will get those kickers and tacklers ready. You heard it here first.

Tech fans will have to wait to see how many wins will be forfeited by Tech due to their use of ineligible players before ascertaining how successful the season really was.
Life’s tough when you have to play by the rules too, isn’t it?
It’s a good thing that Tech lost the Orange Bowl. Otherwise they would have had to return the Orange Bowl Trophy too.
The only way Tech could ever really improve their record would be to move from the ACC to the Sunbelt Conference. The NCAA doesn’t care about the Sunbelt Conference.

You Dawg fans who keep repeating Tech-Georgia scores enjoy yourselves all you want. The thing is… Tech alumni and fans have lives that don’t depend entirely on what a bunch of kids does on Saturday afternoons. College sports are fun to follow, but the biggest reason for going to college is to get an education.
UGA fans don’t seem to care about anything but football, and they don’t care if their players are enrolled in silly majors that no parents who are paying the bills would send their kids to UGA for. The very few football and basketball players who graduate have no job opportunities and end up unemployed or working in menial jobs that hardly require a college degree.
Georgia Tech is a real school with serious academic standards, and that includes scholarshipped athletes. UGA has a long history of being a drunken party school, where parents send their kids for an easy degree, even if the degree itself is worthless.
Jan Kemp exposed the obscene crap going on at UGA with athletes being enrolled in courses a ten-year-old kid could pass. That was almost three decades ago, and nothing has changed. If anything, the abuses are more blatant today. Way too many illiterate goons are being recruited, and the very high arrest rate shows clearly that Richt does not care if his players have any morals or character.
The bottom line is that most Tech fans have very good jobs and productive lives that don’t depend on Tech’s football record for their happiness in life. It would be great to beat UGA more often, but when you put scholar-athletes up against moron-athletes, it’s usually no contest.
So keep on posting your scores all you want, especially since you’re home with plenty of time on your hands. I wish you well, maybe you’ll get lucky and get your old job back at the Waffle House before your unemployment checks stop coming.

Tech alumni and fans are legitimately proud of their school.
On the other hand, the athletic history of UGA is full of so many sordid, sleazy incidents – dating back to Vince Dooley and continuing through Mark Richt – that it’s impossible to overlook. I like ol’ Coach Johnson. I lived in Newland NC, home of the Avery County Vikings. I wonder if coach johnson is one of those Avery County Johnsons. Any way, I first became a Tech fan in 1952. I have been a Tech fan through some remarkably bad football times. Not long ago I went to Tech for a while. Coach Johnson coaches for a school that puts a premium on training engineers from all over the world at the expense of deserving American students by having priorities on those students. Americans who go to Tech do so only at their own risk. Not many Asian or Middle Eastern Countries give the first flying flip about football. Hard to recruit Tech menz. Chan sure could recruit, couldn’t he?
“You remember, the team which produced Johnson, Burnett, Morgan, Dwyer, Nesbitt, Jones, etc. and finished tied with Virginia Tech for the Coastal division championship.”
The option as coached by Paul Johnson from Newland is tough if you don’t have to see it every year. If you have to see it every year and Tech is as sloppy as they were all of last year it can be managed, negated and marginalized. (See “Clemson”, “Georgia”) Mainly, if Tech can get ahead they can hang on to the ball and work that option. Passing looms large in quick strike plays that feed off the running. If the pass is not available, you stuff the gaps with meaty dudes.
Talent for the option isn’t coming forward. I think Coach Paul Johnson is waiting on Coach Moore to retire at Appalachian State. Avery County bumps into Watauga County not for from Boone NC. I hear Newland NC now has more than two redlights. All the old values are changing.
Until China starts developing wide receivers and option backs I’m afraid ol’ Coach Johnson is SOL at GT. Newland ain’t that bad. I’d go back in a minute.

Every assessment I’ve seen has both Ol and Dl at UNC as being 1st or 2d in ACC, and most assessments have there DL as one of top 2-5 in country. There WRs, led by Dwight Jones, is also arguably best in league. The QB, an elite-11 QB outplayed TJ Yates in Spring Game, leaving most UNC observers to think he is much more talented than TJ. Ryan Houston is a load at RB; he sat out last year but ran over VaTech in B’burg in 09 when Heels beat them. Unc could very well have beat GaTech last year even while playing their 2d string. Pure logic says UNC has a superior team. And if sanctions are handed down and UNC is already 6-0 when they play tech, does that mean the team is going to lay down. Matter of fact, the sanction predicted by the LOA prob will not amount to more than probation and possible minimal losses of scollys. Why would this impact the team in any measurable way? They already expect this.

Tech will be fine this year. We have a talent in all the offensive back positions and i think Tevin Washington is a bit underrated. The only problems I see is defense. In case you haven’t been paying attenttion, his “briefly effective because it’s different” scheme is being caught up to by D1 defenses. And his “never effective because it stinks” defense has been pummeled by D1 offenses.

Just think how great our “gimmick” offense would be with better recruiting. The reason some teams have “figured out” our offense is they have bigger defensive lines. If we had the same talent level they would still have not figured it out. We often overachieve because of our offense and coach. UGA still hasn’t “figured out” our “gimmick” offense and may never. We need a better defense. Our offense is just fine. Just think of the possibilities with a better defense. Additionally, our recruiting for 2012 looks good so far.

I’ve seen many “experts” predict that Unc can contend for ACC championship; Other than in the AJC, I’ve not seen such a prediction for GaTech
————-
I am not sure who your “experts” are, but none of them voted in the ACC preseason poll. UNC received 0 (ZERO) votes for first in the Coastal. GT received a measly 1.

Tech could at worst loose 9 games that’s right. I doubt it but last year thought we would win at Kansas and got beat. We have a week to week difficult schedule. We’ve lost two in a row to the Dawgs. Now, this year the defense should be better. However, as good at Tevin can be the QB will have to prove it in a game. The special teams need to improve and we need to improve passing. The good news is we could also run the table. So it’s going to be interesting to watch. We have a well of solid to above average talent and all positions. The first 4 games may tell the way the season will go.

Tech has three easy teams plus Kansas on their schedule. To have a winning season, Tech only needs to beat three good ACC teams. ADRad has given Paul Johnson a pass on the scehule. Tech has to win half their ACC games to have a winning season, and one of those is Duke. Another losing season with that schedule, would be really, really bad. That would mean that Tech beats Duke and only one other ACC team. I think Al Groh’s defense will be improved enough to win four ACC games and have an overall record of 8 wins & four losses. With the easy schedule, that’s mediocre but will be hailed by ADRad as a great turnaround.

CPJ is a great coach. But if he has Washington as his starter for very long, Tech will struggle. He better be ready and do a Spurrier with all his qb’s until he finds the right combo. If not , you are looking at 6-6. I hope I am wrong, but I don’t think so.

The Dawgs own the state. UGA will win the SEC East and tech will be lucky to break even. How much longer will tech fans put up with all those losses??

Butch Davis is a mediocre game-day coach…with that said, I think UNC has a good chance to beat us because they get us early.
Mark is wrong in stating we don’t have talent. The overall team talent level is higher than it has been since Johnson has been here…skilled players aren’t the only sources of “talent,” Mark. The O-line is vital to this offense, and this is the most talented O-line Johnson has ever had.
Inexperience is the MUCH bigger issue than talent. This is why UNC has a good chance to beat us early on in the season.

Mark,
What you talking about? This is a generous prediction for the most overrated coach in America. His “Heisman hopeful” last year couldn’t hit the side of a barn if he tried, so this is a team that clearly cannot throw, and their high school offense has since worn out its welcome. GT is a laughing stock in college football.

UGA grad here. NC is about to be drop kicked by the NCAA for cheating and if that happens soon, then Butch Davis will be fired. NC will go into a tailspin for about two or three years. They will ned a guy with a “system” that can ressurrect it and go forward; sort of like what CPJ has done for GT. He has no titles, or bowl wins yet, but that will not hurt him in the ACC.
I do see CPJ being offered that job. He would recruit the wishbone kids there BUT with the cache of his new school being NC, he might do well there. The administrators at NC would consider that goofy wishbone offense of CPJ’s as a quck start chance to win now, using the level of talent that just might be avilable to them. Just a casual comment. We shall see.
Besides, GT gets a new football coach on average since the Dodd era, about every 4 + years and CPJ is entering his 4th year. NC might come a calling.

Does the ACC have a “Fulmer Cup” (or reasonable facsimile) ?
If so, who is going to win it this year?
The Fulmer Cup is National. It covers the Entire FBS not the SEC.

Synjyn days sure does look better running the ball than “twinkle toes” tevin Washington. It’s gonna be synjyn or vad by the 3rd game… Tevin can prance around on the sideline holding a clipboard.

GT should be around number one or two.. The defense undr Al Groh will be better and the option
will produce 400 plus yards a game.. We will be looking for the Dawgs after we clear the ACC schedule.. After all they tried to make believe we didn’t win the ACC in 2009, whuch of course we did.. We have room for a new trophy……………

The only thing I don’t like about T. Washington is that he doesn’t have a killer instinct. He shows no emotion, and I know he’s a good game manager, but does he have the drive???

CPJ is damaged badly by this latest GT NCAA scandal. He is faxing his resume to the folks up in his home state of NC right now.
He wants out of the mad house known as GT. He has no acomplishments there, like a title or a bowl win and he knows that to jump to a school like NC, that he could recruit a wider range of kids and that he could possibly, with three or four years as NC’s HC, put this misery far behind him.
It is what it is. WHY would he want to remain at GT ………….IF NC came calling?

Until Coach Johnson starts recruiting better players on both sides of the ball, we are going to be 7-5 at best and have a losing season every other year. UGA is a better head coaching hire away from blowing us out every year. At least we keep it close, under Richt.
