On the final day of 2010, Georgia lost to Central Florida to finish 6-7. If you’d asked then, or even a month later, what the mood of Bulldog Nation would be come July, I’d have said, “As grim as Nick Saban with an impacted wisdom tooth.”
Which shows, not for the first time, how wrong I can be.
The Bulldog Club of Metro Atlanta held its kickoff meeting Monday night at the Cobb Galleria, and I’ve attended this annual event — I saw Vince Dooley address these folks, or perhaps their parents, in his final season as coach — often enough to be attuned to nuance in the Red & Black. I’ve seen some tepid Bulldog Club gatherings. This wasn’t one.
Even Georgia’s coach conceded that things could have been different. “This room could have been empty,” Mark Richt told the throng. “Everyone could have said, ‘Georgia’s in the tank.’ ”
Last week Richt sat in Hoover, Ala., and said, “There’s no sense of gloom and doom.” To the assembled SEC media not based in this state, that sounded strange. Wasn’t this guy perched on the hottest seat in the college game? Who was he kidding?
Well, I’m here to attest: Richt’s not kidding. The outside world might look on Georgia and see a program poised to dump its coach, but that’s not the reality. At least not yet, and maybe anytime soon. Indeed, the first question from Monday’s gathering began: “Coach, we love you.”
“There are a lot of good vibes,” said Greg McGarity, the Bulldog grad who’s now the Georgia athletic director. And how, someone asked, do you go from not scoring a touchdown against Central Florida to believing you can take the SEC East?
The Dream Team happened. “That was a salve,” McGarity said, speaking of the ballyhooed recruiting class. “We needed something to calm the waters.”
But it wasn’t just one signing class. (Although Richt did tell the gathering that three incoming freshmen have “Dream Team” tattooed on their arms.) Said McGarity: “People also responded to the [staff and personnel] moves Coach Richt made. That sent the message that it was not just business as usual. They sensed a renewed sense of passion.”
And then? “We had a quiet summer,” McGarity said.
Here he knocked on a wooden tabletop. His obvious point of reference: No Bulldog has lately made the sort of summer headlines — meaning: gotten arrested — too many had made in summers past. Said McGarity: “We’ve had good news on top of good news on top of good news.”
Moments earlier, Richt had sought to explain how this fire has been rekindled. “I think, ‘We’re Georgia, ‘ ” he said. “We’ve got good players. We stumbled last year, but we weren’t far off. Greg has done a good job supporting us. The fans have done a great job supporting us.”
Then this, indirectly addressing his job status: “No one’s pushing the panic button. We believe in what we’re doing.”
Yeah, you’re doubtless asking, but will anyone still believe if Georgia is 0-2? The Bulldogs open against Boise State and then face South Carolina, the reigning SEC East champ. Two victories would thrust UGA into the top 10. One would be considered acceptable. None would prove problematic.
“That’s the thing,” Richt said. “If [0-2] happens, can we withstand all the stuff that will come? But just looking at it on paper, those might be the two best teams we play all year.”
For all the emphasis on Boise and Carolina, we forget this part: Even at 0-2, Georgia wouldn’t necessarily be sunk. There’s a chance it could still be favored in every remaining game, a chance — at least on the proverbial paper — 0-2 could become 10-2. And 10-2, in the grand scheme, would be viewed as a Bulldog resurgence.
And Richt, whom the watching world expects to be as restless as a Dawg on a hot tin roof, looks serene even by his own famous standards. He acts as if he knows something something others don’t. “I plan on having a hell of a year,” he said.
(And yes, Mark Richt really did say “hell” — but he meant it in a heavenly way.)

There will be no need to knee jerk if they go 0-2 and there’s a slim chance, very slim that they go 2-0.
If they go 2-0, that should probably be tempered as well.
We have a tendency in this fair city to always look on the horizon, mainly because the present (not winning, failing in the playoffs, failing in general) is so common I guess.
It’s probably why recruiting is popular here, everyone is hoping for better, because the present, sports wise, is always lacking.

I think you misheard him. Heck of a year. It is funny that the NCAA champs are on our schedule, and we have it chalked up as a win. Just goes to prove, money cannot buy consistent success. Anyway, we have to applaud the senior leadership on this team to keep the players out of the headlines. Headlines in Sept – January are good, but not so good during the summer. Now, bring on the dancing horses…

Wasn’t the “dream team” something like the 3rd best class in the SEC? I mean, it was probably a top 5 recruiting class overall but this is a school that already averages finishing in the top 10 over the last decade. How is this supposed to be the panacea?

Plenty of good things to feel positive about. Second year under the 3-4 defense, returning the All SEC QB. Sure we have some depth issues but thats the game in College ball. Every team is going to have some question marks. Spurrier today pointed out that fact. Lattimore last season ran behind four returning OL men. This year with only two OL men returning will he have that same type success? So sure UGA was down last year but anything is very possible. Thats the beauty of the SEC. Its always great to be a Georgia Bulldawg!!!!

Indeed, there are good vibes, accompanied by the background noise of miscontent. And to the upper crust of southern society who keeps calling these young players “thugs”, i bet your life your closet isn’t all the way clean. How many 18-25 yr olds around the world make immature decisions? It comes with the territory. Most of these “thugs” would turn out different IF these coaches and their institutions actually cared about turning them into young men instead of modern day gladiators.

I’m sorry, but I don’t see where all the excitement should be. Excitement for the upcoming football season…yes. As a fan of Georgia football and football in general, I am excited. Excited about Georgia getting back to the top…..no.
What have we done Mark? Having a great recruiting class means nothing at this point. We have them every year, and every class under performs. And what big changes has Richt made? We will still have the worst damn offensive coordinator in college football calling plays which still baffles me to no end. Does anyone really think changing the strength and conditioning coach was the only change that needed to be made. It was not.
Oh, and while we haven’t had any arrest this summer, we have lost several key, albeit dumb players. We loose our number 1 and 2 runningbacks from last year, we loose Sturdivant to injury, we have two players quit and transfer, and one of our projected starting linebackers status is in limbo because of possible NCAA violations. Do you call that a quiet offseason? I for one, do not.
There is no need to be excited now. If we somehow start of 2-0, then we can get excited. However, at this point, I haven’t seen anything to get excited about. Richt is having his anual we are going to be wonderful speach before we fail. Remember how he guaranteed a victory over Florida last year???

Georgia is always at or near the top in recruiting. The problematic areas are they recruit thugs, and so often waste the talents of other young men.
And that’s exactly the problem with CMR. Richt knows up front that half of his recruits will end up in jail for DUI or driving on suspended licenses or assault and battery, or they can’t even pass remedial studies. Richt has brought nothing but disgrace to UGA because of his shady recruiting practices.

Well plenty of things to get excited about. Second year in the 3-4 defense. Good talent abound on that side of the ball. Secondary has some really good talent in it. Linebackers are skilled, defensive line now has the athletes required to successfully free the backers to make plays.
Offensively Aaron Murray is back to distribute the ball. Plenty of question marks for sure, but each year teams have to replace players. Sure this year UGA has more than we would like but thats the cards we are dealt with. Excuses cannot be made.
Steve Spurrier noted as much this afternoon in speaking of how Lattimore had it made with four linemen returning lst year. This year only two return. So will they be able to have as much success on the ground? The only way to find out is playing the games. Spurrier will not make excuses, nor should UGA.
This is big boy football and Richt surely has a fire lit in him for the dimple fact he knows how critical this season is. This season UGA has to play like there pants are on fire and attack, attack and attack some more. Nothing is going to be given to them. This is a team that could win 10-11 games, but could win 6-7 games. The first two weeks are critical to positive vibes in Athens.

Mark Richt must have some great P.R. people at his disposal. A year after we saw the UGA nation have probably the worst single year of Public Relations hits to this branded Optimisim.
Just think for a moment, an AD caught with a woman half his age,not his wife, with panties between his legs while driving drunk, players collected the uncoveted Fulmer Cup award, players missing court dates, arrest that were off the chain, a player suspended for dealing with a street agent who he sold his jersey to, losing to a pitiful Coloradao team on the road, a first year Defensive coach caught on television giving the choke sign to a kicker, struggling to beat a weak GT team, losing to UCF in a third tier bowl game.
What does Mark Richt and his PR chronies do? They make up this great name “Dream Team” to put together about the 6th or 7th best recruiting class during his tenure at UGA. Not a recruiting coup like we saw with UF or USC a few years back, but the 5 to 8th best recruiting class in the nation. And the UGA fans borrowed from the future, took out mortgages and forfeited their dignity to back CMR in his big year.
Well folks, the schedule is the easiest conference schedule in the league this year and Mark Richt’s easiest since he took over for Donnan. If he does not have “a hellava year” he needs to understand a Dream Team II moniker will not hook anymore UGA fans.

You UGA fans are so gullible. You can spin it like a liberal democrat trying to save a program that guarantees him votes, but in the end it is still spin.
2nd year with Grantham and his system…..that system was pretty good against UCF, but the offense stayed in Athens and went south for christmas break for warmer destinations.
Crowell is going to make a difference. Lets see, the SEC across the boards signs approximately 49 running backs each year, and about 1.4 make a difference his freshmann year….better hope that one is Crowell.

Of course there is optimism! It’s the Dawgs we’re talking about here! Every year, 10 win season at a minimum. Why?
Well excellent coaches of course! Notice all of the BCS National Titles? You may have missed them, after Auburn, Alabama, LSU, Florida and Tennessee. But they’re there I’m sure of it. Kind of like our 7-6 season we had printed on our trophies.
Best recruits, on paper. Lots of arrests. Lots of dirty plays. Lots of personal fouls. Lots of personal fouls after great plays. No defense. Childish coordinators giving choke signs to a teenage kicker who ends up kicking the winning FG. Short quarterback with a great arm. No receivers. Fumbling running backs. No discipline (see fight at the end of the Auburn game). Relying on high school kids to change the tone against players who will start in the NFL next year.
Yeah, add it all up. It’s a winning combination. 0-2 start. 1-6 after that. 5-12 when it’s all said and done and doubt there will be a single change because 6-7 was acceptable wasn’t it? We’ve sunk to the point beating GaTech is a highlight because we frankly didn’t beat a single team with a winning record.
Do I hope for a better year? No. Because it will be a fluke. It’s time to part ways with Richt and start new. This conference is littered with new coaches to their teams winning national titles, I don’t see any old coaches who’ve never won winning.
Time for change. If losing a no name bowl game to UCF wasn’t a wake up call then you’re blind as a bat.

There are as many reasons to be concerned about this upcoming year as there are to be hopeful. Let’s just play some ball and see! Lowcountry is right………this team could win 10-11 games or as easily end up with 6-7 wins. I’m personally predicting they go 8-4.

Spin Spin, Excuses Excuses…just not accepting the facts is mighty tough. “typical college student behavior”..not if you are serious about playing SEC Football and making your team special.

Leadership wins
July 25th, 2011
11:24 pm
Look at the teams Richt has had success with in his years at UGA, all the really good teams had really great leadership inside the locker room….. From 2002- 2006…. He had guys like Stinchcomb, Boss Bailey, Tony Gilbert, Burt Jones, David Green, Pollack, Sean Jones, Thomas Davis, Greg Blue, Bruce Thorton, Max Gean, Shockley…. All guys that lead by example and held all of their teammates up to their standards….. I am not sure UGA has those type of guys right now, we can talk about the coaches all we want, but the leadership has to come within the frame work of the team….. Who are the leaders on this team? who is leading by example? who is holding their teammate accountable? A team, can only be as good as the leadership within it…. I hope someone emerges for this one , because a freshman class is not going to help the 2011 football team.

I bleed black and red, Mark…so I sure hope Coach Richt is right. But I sure wonder…
If Coach Richt can get the program back on track…if he knows how to rekindle the fire (as you write in your column)…then why in hell does it need to be rekindled in the first damn place? If he’s the guy who can get the team to be serious again…to look like they’re ready to play from the opening kickoff, without making stupid penalties. They why hasn’t he done so before now?
I believe that Coach Richt is a decent man, who does two things very well: He’s a clean-cut, nice looking guy who says the right things and represents the university quite well; and he’s a good recruiter. And after that, the positives are just about over. He’s one of the worst game coaches I’ve ever seen, and the team almost never looks like they’re prepared. Our defense has been wretched, and we continuously make the same mistakes over and over. (How many times did we blitz Tim Tebow, only to rush too deep and too wide and have him just tuck the ball and pick up key first downs because all the defensive backs were in deep coverage since we were blitzing?) Our kickoff defense was a little better last season, but the last three seasons prior to that it was awful. And what are players doing dancing and boogeying on the sidelines in the late fourth quarter of a game we’re LOSING?
Coach Richt has just completely let the team discipline get away from him, and once a coach does that it’s almost impossible to get it back.
And just to make it perfect…to put the cherry on top of the ice cream sundae…here he comes popping up with a new uniform again. Bless the beasts and the children…

2- Scout has Richt winning 6 games in Computer simulation at #36 ranking
3- ESPN panel of 38 experts doesn’t have Georgia in the top 25
4- Richt hasn’t beat a ranked team since 2009
5- Richt’s win totals have gone down from 11 in 07′ to 10 in 08′ to 8 in 09′ to 6 in 10′
6- Richt always recruits well, who couldn’t at Georgia? No one does less with more talent
7- Richt got outcoached by a 3-9 Colorado team, and couldn’t score on a Conference USA team, and has got outcoached by 9 out 11 of his last match ups with ranked teams.

Amazing how many “experts” (mainly columnists, sportscasters, poll voters, etc) put all their eggs in the what-happened-last-season basket.
2011 is a NEW season! Come the start of the season, If any UGA player (or GT player) is thinking about what happened 8 months prior in each’s perspective bowl game then there’s a big problem!
2011 is a NEW season! Why aren’t the Texas Longhorns ranked in the Top 5? I mean, they ARE TEXAS aren’t they?? They “experts” usually have them, at least, in the Top 10. Is it b/c they lost 7 games in 2010? But coming into 2010 they were picked by many to win-it-all … I guess that was b/c they were runner-up in 2009?
2011 is a NEW season! UGA & GT’s 2010 records have nothing to do with what is going to happen, on the field!
2011 is a NEW season! H*LL YES!! UGA & GT have something to be excited about … neither one has 7 Ls…yet.
Looking forward to the NEW season! Go Jackets!!

UGA SHOULD have a great year – besides the first two games who do they really play that will be competitive this year?? I don’t want to hear any crying about “the schedule” this year – it’s basically a fluff schedule when you consider that your dawgs play a toothless Florida this year and a clawless Auburn – and you have BS in what amounts to a home game, as well as SC at home. And besides the annual cocktail event in J’ville – the farthest the puppies have to travel is Knoxville (against the rodeo clowns of UT); otherwise, be very careful against those ranking teams like New Mexico State and Coastal Carolina. So yes, UGA SHOULD have a very good year.

I wish the best for UGA this season. It is, as GT Fan said, a brand new season. However, in all honesty, no matter how this season turns out, CMR has over stayed his tenure in Athens. He has taken UGA to national prominence but has also made it a laughing stock in recent years. Today’s climate is different. UGA Athletics makes too much money to not be a powerhouse in football. Can we honestly, CMR supporters and Haters, soberly, believe CMR will bring this to fruition? NO. Ever since his tenure began in 2001, almost every team that has played for or won the national title had a new coach and a struggling program. Old folks say not all great coaches can win national titles and dominate all the time. CMR is a great coach, but he cannot take this program any higher than he has done before. A better coach WILL take this job after he is gone. You can thank CMR for that.

dog, i understand your concern, even though i disagree. What coach do you know that could come in and do a better job over the next 10 years? A change would install a different philosophy to the entire team and program. It would be 6-6 or maybe 7-5 for a couple of years until the new scheme is learned and recruits are brought in from the new coach. Look at the mess Tenn. has had to endure after tossing Fulmer. Look what Nebraska has had to go through after Osborne departed from coaching. Not always does the grass get greener right away. Do you want to suffer through more downs? Sit back and see what the next 2 years are like, you might change your mind.

It is good to be a DAWG. Everythign is fine and yes the team was close last year even with ALL the things that went wrong. Could have been 10-2 EASY. No need to panic. Last year WAS a fluke and happens to EVERYBODY sometimes. The future looks bright. The DAWG HAS TURNED! If we go 0-2 the heat will turn up but if everybody uses that to fire them up, the rest of the season may be all wins. It MIGHT BE ALL WINS ANYWAY. This MIGHT BE A SPECIAL SEASON. If we can run the ball and get past Boise. We had SC beat on the road last year without AJ and blew it. We can beat them with our D this year at home. If we can run, we might run the table. And Richt is a great coach who done more in his first 10 than most all coaches in history. Richt is THE man and he WILL get us to a National Championship game in the next 3 years. MAYBE EVEN THIS YEAR IF THE TEAM COMES TOGETHER TO WIN THE SEC.
We WILL be STRONGER physically and mentally. We WILL be FOCUSED. We WILL be MAD. We WILL WIN and SHUTUP all these naysayers and whiners. MARK IT DOWN. Richt will be at UGA until he retires. Like Dooley and Paterno, he will only coach at 1 school, UGA but his record will make Dooley’s look significantly inferior when all is said and done. Richt is THIS generations Paterno. No coach can match their records in their first 10 years. No coach….No not Saban, No not the Bear. Paterno and Richt. Seen Paterno’s record his first 10 years? WOW. Richt’s is as good. Nobody else though. NOBODY. How many National Championships do you think coaches win their first 10 years? Let me tell you….NONE. Richts time is now. UGA’s time is NOW. Remember 1980. Remember the pathetic year before? What happened? We had an AWESOME D and a freshman namned Herschel.
2011 we have a freshman named Isaiah……and a bunch of HUNGRY, STRONGER and FOCUSED DAWGS. If Bobo is up to the task…..this might be another VERY special year. If we can run the ball, we CAN beat ANYBODY. ANYBODY. Isaiah can hit the home run too. You hear me? He can bust one from ANYWHERE ON THE FIELD. Did I mention he CAN CATCH? Sound like a 1980 freshman?

@uga 2002 I disagree one point. We have great coaching in some areas and we have great talent, as far as athletes and speed, across the board. It’s just not meshing together. I believe BoBo is hamstrung by Richt’s offense and playbook. He even tries to copycat his playcalling style. There are now new ideas introduced into the offense. Furthermore, Richt started managing rather than coaching. A huge era with the hiring of Meyer and Saban in the conference. Willie Martinez was a buddy pick, but no SEC defensive coordinator. He wasn’t mean enough. Grantham may be too hyper..lol. UGA got slapped in to reality threes years. But the slide should have stopped then.

Mind over matter, sometimest the key to great seasons and championships. But keep it in the locker room coach. How many years of cheap talk will preface another season like last year’s. If I’m the coach, nobody says nuthin’ — under penalty of watching all of the games from the bleachers this year. Button it down. Talk is cheap. We’re not saying anything. Come to the games and see. All this talk, talk, talk — but as the old saying goes, “that’s why they play the games.” . I had “old-school” coaches in high school and college (think Bobby Knight), who would be giving untried, and untested freshmen (prima donnas for the last two or three years in high school, no doubt) 24 hours to get those “Dream Team” tattoos removed, with laser treatments, or have themselves removed from the team. Wow — Have things changed!! CMR is excited about it. True freshmen will make all the difference this year? — in the SEC? — of all conferences in the nation, the SEC??? Pass me another cup of that special Puppie Nation Kool-Aid. Pull back, shut up, get rid of those stupid tattoos, stop talking about how true freshmen will be your salvation in the toughest league in the land, ditch those stupid new “combat uniforms” and suck it up and as an old coach of mine use to say — “we’ll do our talking on the field.” All of this brings to mind a quote from an HBO series I have been watching. Game of Thrones. It’s a great quote by a member of the Night’s Watch – sworn to protect the realm. ” A man gets what he earns on the Wall (SEC), no more, no less.” I suggest that CMR make a few copies of that and hang it around the locker room . . . and especially his office. “Dream Team tattoos”??? You’ve got to be kidding me. As SC, Bama, Florida, Auburn, LSU, and Boise State might say . . . yeah . . . in their dreams. Time to tighten it up and suck it up and shut up, coach.

Richt has one of the best winning %’s over the last 10 years.
LSU is the only team that has been better in the SEC, over that 10 yr span.
Bama has a great coach in Saban, though and since he came, on the scene, they are the SECs’ best program.
As bad as I hate to you have to give UF credit, but the jury is still out, on their new regime.
The SEC is so tough, but so dominant and I give Richt credit, for his coaching ability.
His biggest problem has been, that he is loyal to a fault aka: WM and letting Bobo be the O coordinator and not just the QB coach.

I remember last year when a certain team lost to Boise State and then chocked the next game and yet on to have a pretty good year (VT). Yes, puppies will lose to the my little ponies and the tweety birds but then can come back for a decent year. Probably will lose to MS State and Florida but should win the rest (yes, even against GT, darn it) so 8-4 is not bad. Get a good bowl and 9-4 is not a bad year. I say not this year but next will be a breakout year for the slobbering puppies.

As a Gator, I want to have the Cocktail Party Game be a key for both teams this year. With Muschamp at UF it will have a bit of flair. Thus, I am pulling for UGA to beat Carolina and roll into JAX with no SEC losses. Our Gator SEC Schedule is a bit tougher, but if the Gators roll into JAX with no more than one SEC loss, the game should be very exciting. I have been around the UF-UGA rivalry for many years, and I remember the dark days for us Gators. It will be good for the SEC for UGA to get back in the mix as long as we beat the DAWGS in JAX.
I will be pulling for UGA to beat Spurrier in Athens.

No sense of gloom & doom? How about this? 7 out of last 8 seasons, 88% of the time, Richt LOSES more games than the season before. Looking at 5-7 or worse. 12% chance Richt goes 7-5 or better. How’s that for gloom & doom? You simply have here the case of a coach who has failed so often in his attempts to improve win totals from season to season, that he has lost sight of how to fix it. Less turnovers & penalties was his last failed attempt to turn around an 8 win season. Richt failed, yet again, and won less games, ended up with 6 wins. Everything Richt tries, fails to turn the season around 7 out of 8 times. Richt’s not good at figuring out what’s wrong, and fixing it.

@What’s Richt’s record against other SEC teams?
If we want to play this game, what’s Richt’s record against Alabama with Saban? 50%. What does Saban have? A National Championship.
Chizik? 50%. What does Chizik have? Well they spotted us points and then rattled off 7 touchdowns to win 49-31. They had 10 drives, 7 of them were touchdowns. And what does Chizik have now?: A National Championship.
Bobby Petrino? 50%.And his team has a better chance of winning the SEC West than I think Alabama does. Alabama gets a lot of hype for going 9-3, losing 28-27 like they did to Auburn and having a new QB.
Derek Dooley? 100%. We’ve beaten every time. Once. But good enough! ugh.
How about Florida? Let’s look at that again. 2-10. Show me a national championship team that can’t win more than 20% against it’s biggest rival… a rival who doesn’t consider us their biggest btw.

uga2002: In the end it is all about winning championships. Auburn, Alabama and Tennessee all fired adequate coaches to pursue excellent ones (OK, Kiffin deserted Tennessee, but it was the right plan). Living here in Atlanta among UGA fans, this almost cult-like devotion to Richt is hard to understand. And the most amazing part is that he is paid like he is one of the top coaches in the country. Because I’m a nice guy, I checked out the UT ‘arrest’. Seems as if Mr Johnson had a disagreement with a young lass and was urged to leave the drinking establishment. He did, along with a couple of friends. Walking, not driving. Apparently, the lady didn’t want to leave the situation alone. (ANY married guy can vouch for the previous sentence) Sooooo, she DRIVES up besides him to continue berating him. He slaps the side of the car (not her, the car). This gives one of Knoxville’s finest the opportunity to ‘arrest’ Mr. Johnson for PI and DC. Strangely enough, he only gets a ticket…not an overnight session in the drunk tank. And also strangely enough, this has been the ONLY blemish by actual UT players in the past 5 months.

You know, It kills me just how many armchair coaches come here to vent their ignorance. Half these clowns never made it past junior high football, much less high school, but they seem to have all the answers for a Division 1 football team. Why don’t you shut your mouth and stick to what you know the best, fantansy football and xbox 360 college football. I live for the Dawgs, and every year i ride the ups and downs with this team. I stick by them good or bad. We could be Auburn, enjoying a National Championship for the next year before the NCAA comes and snatches it back(See USC). Coach Richt doesn’t cheat, and while some of our players have turned out to be duds and some don’t get it, it could be worse. How short some of your memories are. We could still have Jim Donnan, who never won the SEC, or Ray Goff, who couldn’t make it to a bowl game. Be careful of what you wish for, you just might get it. We could end up with the next Jim Tressel. I’ll take my chances with Mark Richt. So why don’t you get on board with the program, or seriously, go find someone who wants to hear your garbage. I forgot, 50% against Les Miles. Who also has a National Championship since he got to LSU. Chizik took 2 years after inheriting a mess. MIles took 4 years. Saban was also 4 at LSU and then 3 at Alabama. Meyer won like Chizik in year 2 after inheriting a solid team and then year 4.
Gosh look at this:
BCS National Championships
2011- Auburn, Chizik had 2 years
2010 – Alabama, Saban had 3 years at Bama
2009 – Florida, Meyer at 4 years at UF
2008 – LSU, Miles at 4 years.
2007 – Florida, Meyer at 2 years.
2006 – Texas, Brown at 8 years
2005 – USC, Carroll at 4 years
2004 – LSU, Saban at 4 years
2003 – Ohio State, Tressel at 2 years
2002- Miami, Coker at 1 year
2001- Oklahoma, Stoops at 2 years
2000- FSU, Bowden at 24 years
1999- Tennessee, Fulmer at 4 years
So I guess our hope should be in Bowden? 24 years to win.
But seriously, the average is 5 years if you include Bowden, throw out the two outliers in Bowden and Coker and you’re right at 3 years. Which has been the average since Mack Brown won which is misleading considering UT will never fire him. They’re not fanatics out there in Austin. They don’t have to put up with watching everyone around them win national titles like we do. Just to review, Auburn, Alabama, Florida, LSU, Florida and go back to LSU and UT.
So Richt is starting year 11. Sure there was a good run there of 10 plus wins but even then, we couldn’t break the ceiling and then when they ordained us #1 preseason, like so many here believe every year, we just came apart. Now 4 years of a record worse than the one before and now we’ve got to play Boise who many believe may make the National Title game to face off against Alabama (yawn, ain’t happening) and then South Carolina who is loaded.
Get out your snickers bar, we’re not going anywhere any time soon.

Worse part, does everyone realize the dream team is made up of freshman? High schoolers. Teenagers.
And the SEC is filled with NFL players. Many of whom when they go to the NFL will start. That’s not a dream team. A dream team is Cadillac Williams and Ronnie Brown in the backfield. A dream team is the Nebraska team that demolished Florida in the mid 90s. Probably the greatest team in history. A dream team is Cam Newton with Julio and AJ. A dream team is Tebow with Mark Ingram.
A dream team is not made up of teens. Unless, their hot girls and not playing football. Then that’s kind of a dream team.
Otherwise, no. This ain’t a dream, this is scary we’ve sunk to this level.

My guess is Marshall at CB, Swann at safety, Mitchell at WR, Drew at LB and Crowell at Rb will see playing time. Marshall may start.

Tressel didn’t have time to cheat by the time he won. Nothing on Chizik after over a year of review on Newton and that’s with lots of investigators that came up with nothing but they’re hanging out hoping something will come up i.e. “not over till we say it’s over.” But it’s over. Alabama’s issues are not Sabans. Carroll yes.
So no, it looks worse for us. Without Carroll and the two outliers you’re down to 2.7 years.
How about not trying to add anything. And regardless, they won. They went undefeated and won. Sure Carroll’s was vacated but they won it on the field. We’re not winning on the field. And don’t give me because we run a clean program, he have secondary violations all of the time and I’m kind of concerned that something is going to come out of Columbus we don’t like. I’m not certain how it’ll play out. The defense has potential to do well, but it’s not a given. The OL & RBs are questionable. However, we’ve got a solid QB, great TE & decent WRs. Right now, I’d say between 7-5 & 9-3.

If Richt has another winning season (no worse than 8-4), at a bare minimum, he will get another year simply because of Grantham’s contract.

While most of you people are looking back in time. I’m looking forward to the 2011 season. Right now every team in America is undefeated. Talking smack is about the only thing going on right now.
This week we are planning our 35th. trip to the GA-FL game and I can honestly say we have always had a good time, win or lose. Granted we had a better time in the winning years. We are also planning on being at Boise, Auburn, Miss State, and Kentucky games. We normally watch the Tech game in Las Vegas (so I can legally help pay for my trip by betting on the GA/Tech game). But even if Tech won, I can assure you, we would not let that put a damper on the trip.
So, while you guys look back to the past, I’m looking forward to a great season of football, travel, and fun with the Bulldogs.

The question remains: Do we want to have a dominant football program or just be good enough to compete? We are not Alabama, Ohio St., or Nebraska. I get that. Neither are we South Carolina, Ole Miss, or Wisconsin, teams who catch lightning in a bottle every now and then. We are somewhere in the middle. In recent years, the program has regressed past even that marker. There is more optimism on The Flats with a triple option offense than in Athens with a pro-style offense, pro-style defense, and twice as many NFL players. CMR can win it all running a (relatively) clean program. There is dirt lying around every program. It’s mostly outsiders who get these institutions caught holding the bag. 10-2, 9-3, and 8-4 is acceptable 5 x times in ten years with this type of talent. However, that record should not include a sub .500 record against your biggest rival, depending on two freshman qb’s, DB’s leaving WR’s wide open down the middle or the sideline, dumb penalties after great plays, dancing on Vanderbilt’s logo, fumbling at the goal line every week, too many simple traffic charges to name, etc. When you have a nice coach, where football is obviously not his passion (no problem there), then character mistakes by players, missed recruiting opportunites, and, bone headed play-calling, undisciplined play is not acceptable. If UF, Alabama, Ohio St., USC, and LSU can win NC with hacks for quarterbacks, then why can’t we? I can’t include Auburn, because Cam Newton was the best in the SEC since Herschel.

Have you people seen the Offensive Line depth chart from the Rivals preview of the Dawgs? Some kid named Hugh Williams is backing up Cordy Glenn. Ben Reynolds, 6′2″ 265, is your back up center. And Austin Long (missed spring, back injury), and Dallas Lee (missed spring, asthma like condition), are backing up Burnette and Anderson. Only school in America who’s 2nd team offensive line is in worse shape physically than their starters, and they haven’t played a down of college football! How can you scrimmage? One injury to a starter, and your looking at elevating some walkon with no experience, an injured backup with no experience, or a true freshman with no experience. In the toughest defensive conference in America. Something is seriously wrong with your program when in the face of these challenges, the Richt/Bobo braintrust bring in the 9th rated offensive line class in the CONFERENCE (per rivals), Why don’t you Georgia fans address these specifics and demand answers from Richt/Booboo rather than continuously speaking in general terms, like how much you love the Dawgs, and how fired up you are, and how you can’t wait, and all that other crap. This is why your program loses to Colorado and Central Florida. Ya’ll enable it to.

Richt and his merry gang of misfits seem to think that the entire SEC East has collapsed. The folks who think that USC is going to fold up shop, pack their bags, and go on a bender are just looking through rose colored glasses. The first game USC has is against East Carolina, and EC is not bad, not too good either. Spurrier will do just enough to get by EC, but will focus his efforts on the SEC East and that second game against UGA.

I am not a huge believer in recruitment hype but what a great example of continued Mark Bradley spin. UGa ranks 4th in the SEC in 2011 recruiting and that is a “Dream Team”?
Mark, so please tell us how many of those dream recruits will letter this season? Do you do any fact finding or just channel notes from UGa’s Athletic Dept? Sad, really sad that this type of lame writing passes at the AJC.
I do agree that UGa will not be sunk at 0-2 but that is only because you will cover for them. Everyone, watch for the “tremendous potential” column and “Georgia looking stronger” columns by mid September. Or you will just ignore inconvenient facts, bad games- who’ll foget your failure to address the terrible loss at Colorado last year? Remember Mark? AJ Green actually played in that game (but it didn’t fit your spin on how the schedule and the Green suspension ruined the year).
Mark Richt will continue to be an ineffective Coach and the fans in Columbia, Knoxville, Starkville, Gainesville, Baton Rouge are loving it…keep bringing us those quality wins over UK, Coastal and Vandy Georgia !

Handy List for Richt to use after the losses this season (see sportscliches dot com):
The final score is the only statistic that matters.
They outplayed us in every phase (facet) of the game.
They wanted it more than we did.
We had our chances but we let them slip away.
We came up a little short.
We don’t care about moral victories.
They caught us on an off night.
It just wasn’t meant to be.
Turnovers killed us.
They out-hustled us.
They out-muscled us.
They out-coached us.
We got a wake-up call.
We weren’t mentally prepared.
We came out flat.
We beat ourselves.
We only have to look in the mirror.
They ate our lunch.
They’ve had our number all season.
They own us.
This is a bitter pill to swallow.
It’s going to be a long plane ride home.
I take full responsibility for this loss.
We didn’t get the job done.
Not to take away anything from Denver, but we didn’t play like we’re capable of playing.
My hat’s off to them.
I tip my hat to them.
You’ve got to hand it to them.
Give them all the credit.
The best team won today.
He always has his team ready to play.
We can still hold our heads high.
These guys have nothing to be ashamed of.
They just made the big plays and we didn’t.
They stepped up and made the plays.
We didn’t match their intensity.
We didn’t maintain the intensity for the entire 60 minutes.
We lost our focus.
I don’t want to point fingers.
There were too many defensive lapses.
Our defense was a non-factor.
Our defense didn’t show up today.
We dug ourselves a deep hole.
We shot ourselves in the foot.
The ball just didn’t bounce our way.
We didn’t get the big breaks today.
We’ll just have to put this loss behind us.
I’m really proud of our guys.
It’s been a great ride.

Rubik,
Half of the recruits will end up in trouble for DUI, suspended license, or assault?
That is about as deceptive a statement as one can write.
The number of UGA players that have been arrested for assault is VERY VERY low over the past 5-10 years. Same with DUI, though there have been a couple of DUI’s.
The Sturdivant deal where he touched a pregnant woman’s stomach shouldn’t be lumped in with several UT players alledgedly nearly beating a guy to death in a bar. The Sturdivant thing was a little creepy and not great manners, but I wouldn’t call that an “assault”. Mettinger was dismissed from the team over his Spring Break incident. That is the death penalty from Richt and UGA. Richt can’t assign jail time, so they gave him the maximum penalty they could (kicked off the team).
I remember that Bollinger was pulled over for a suspected DUI, but those charges were dropped. I understand that we have had a couple of other DUI’s and I consider that a serious offense and in each instance they were either suspended and or kicked off the team.
Most of the arrests were moped (yes moped) related or driving with a suspended license. Not exactly menace to society stuff, but still dumb and all too frequent.
Half of the recruits aren’t arrested for assualt or DUI that just isn’t true and there are VERY few players that have gotten kicked off for scholastic reasons over the past 10 years.

@John That Dream Team does not include CMR or Coach BOOBOO under developing them, under coaching them, not putting them in positions to succeed. Funny how your list did not include ONE FACT about who will coach this “Dream Team.” Chuck Daly coached the first one. No questions about him or his coaching ability. Most of those guys wanted to go to UGA for UGA. Which is what it should be in the first place. It definately isn’t the coaching. CMR isn’t strong enough to pull these guys in himself. That’s the only reason BOOBOO didn’t get demoted or dismissed. He had his hooks in these guys already. At least he can recruit some. Why isn’t Herschel the RB coach? Why was Cam Newton viewed as a tight end? Even B. Boykin admitted that Cam ran him over in high school. Why is Nick Marshall being played at every skill position but QB? Why? Lack of imagination and lack of putting players in the best position to win championships.

Watched Richard Samuel running the ball against South Carolina two years ago. He started the game and played well. Carlton Thomas came in and carried the ball some, but Samuel was impressive. Gained 4 yards or more on almost every carry. Georgia won the game 41 to 37 and Samuel scored the first touchdown and set up the game clinching field goal. Those that are concerned about our running game, fret not! The Samuel Boo Crowell train is going to be rolling!! Watch for big yards to be paved by Glenn, Gates, Jones, Burnette/Lee, and Anderson.
With Aron White, Arthur Lynch, and Jay Rome in the mix at tight end, look for Orson Charles to be spread some with our receivers to get more experience on the field. Murray will have Charles, White/Lynch/Rome, King and Brown/Wooten/Troupe/Bennett to throw to on any given down. (With Malcolm Mitchell being the wild card in the mix.)

I believe Coach Bobo is a good coach but is still developing with his play calling abilities. I agree that he does need to improve in that one area. Coach Richt obviously has confidence that he will or he would have replaced or demoted him. While our coach some may say is not on Saban’s or Spurrier’s level I beg to differ. He has one of the highest winning percentages ever and has held his own versus both Saban and Spurrier. Yes, his record against Florida needs to improve, but remember, Meyer is no longer there. Let’s wait and see what happens now that Muschamp is at the helm.

That’s the thing,” Richt said. “If [0-2] happens, can we withstand all the stuff that will come? But just looking at it on paper, those might be the two best teams we play all year.”
That’s predictable. Preacha Man’s already got the stratcom to counter the first two losses. But what’s this stuff about can WE withstand all the stuff that will come? Listen, the Bulldog Nation has withstood all the “stuff” that Preacha Man Mark “Marjoe” Richt has been peddling the past few years. We can definitely withstand it, but he hopefully cannot.
I am disappointed that the UGA leadership has not already fired Richt. I have no doubt that this time next year the next head coach will have already recruited a Top 10 class to join the ranks of those great ones before them…

He knows something UGA fans don’t know, that is how to keep your job when you make $3 million a year, and you are the 7th best coach in the SEC, and you had a losing season on top of that. This guy reminds me so much of Billy Graham when he is preaching to the desperate souls that will listen and believe any thing he says. The UGA fan base is the same way, They are so desperate for some good news, that they will still believe anything the Reverend tells them. First of all, it doesn’t matter how many blue chip players this clown recruits, because he still has his hand picked O.C.the 7th or 8th best O.C. in the conference. He still has the worst running backs coach, w.r coach, and O.L. coach in the SEC, and the jury is still out of his defensive coordinator and the other defensive coaches. So when things get tight in the 4th qtr. you can always count of BooBoo to make that one boneheaded call that stalls a drive, and results in a field goal(which is a Richt specialty), or a punt. There is no way in hell this coach will suddenly turn everything around after 3 seasons of mediocre coaching, game planning, and game day adjustments. Simply put, UGA fans can drink all of the Kool-aid this clown makes, but at the end of the season that kool-aid finally want taste so good to the most delusional UGA fan. When a program has the 7th best coach in the conference, and the 8th best O.C. in the conference, the future doesn’t look so great, or in this clown’s words,” a helluva year”.

While I understand the desire to remove Richt, be careful what you ask for. He may not be the perfect coach in your mind, but he has put Georgia back on the map after years of Goff and Donnan. Every year that Georgia has had an experienced quarterback in place, we have won a minimum of 10 games. That is 6 out of 6 years. 02,03,04,05,07,08. Years where we have broken in a new qb with virtually no exp: 01,06,09 and 2010: 8,9,8 and 6 wins respectively. I believe it is imperative that Christian LeMay and/or Hutson Mason get valuable experience for when Murray departs more than anything else.
I would love to see Herschel Walker hired as our running backs coach. I wonder if he would do it if asked?
As for Cam Newton, I would have loved to see him wearing the red and black, but auburn only got him for one year and will likely turn in that trophy before too long. I would rather earn the championship the right way, not in a compromising way. I want to see our quarterbacks for three to four years like Green, Shockley, Stafford and Murray. Marshall wants to play defense so he can play basketball too – his decision, not Richt’s.

I am the first to admit that AU is going to have to play great ball this year in order to contend but please if you have any common sense don’t write them off as an easy W. Until you actually do something with you program and win a relevant game or title you room for personal arrogant gestures is not welcomed here. Say what you want about Cam and how he was the team but if you know anything about football, one player can’t win a game.Michael Dyer 182 touches 1093yds and Michael Lattimore 249 touches 1197yds. Unreal offensive line and great college wide receivers. On top of that we have probably one of the best tight ends in the country. @ John I think, or at least believe, if Cam would have came to UGA during his first go’ round, it would have been clean. I don’t believe he took anything to go to UF. He just simply fit what they were trying to do on offense. Notice the alledged statement his father made, “..this time it won’t be for free..” This implies that Cam must have told him about other players at UF who were compensated for signing. For the life of me, I cannot believe he was offered $180,000 for a player who was unproven, made bad grades, and bought a stolen laptop. You’re right about Nick Marshall though.

Questions for Mark Bradley: Do you believe UGA will ever participate in a BCS national championship game under Richt? Where would you rank Richt as compared to his SEC peers? National peers? Do you think Richt would have lasted as long (10 years so far) at AL, LSU, Florida or even Auburn without once appearing in a national championship game? Do you feel UGA fans have lower expectations than these schools and are happy as long as GA consistently wins 8-10 games a year while others compete for national championships. Just curious as to your opinions.

by Jay Tate – NCAA closing the Cam Newton loophole?
The NCAA on Tuesday proposed to change its official definition of agent to include “third-party influences, including family members, who market student-athletes’ athletics ability or reputation for personal financial gain.” The NCAA’s proposal doesn’t name Cam Newton or anyone in his family, but it’s clearly devised to close a loophole that allowed Newton to remain eligible at Auburn last season.

I would be more concerned about CMR, if he did not display any emotion at all. Seems like that has been a concern for so many people that dislike CMR. I am glad he is showing passion and if you don’t think that is encouraging to the players, you are missing the point of college football all together. A spirited team that has confidence in their coaches and team, do a heck of a lot better than an uninspired one. These kids believe in CMR and their team mates and they are going to have a good year.
Hold your condemnation of the team and CMR until the season begins. It will not be neccesary once it does. Of course I realize that some of you have to write some choice bit of crap that you find amusing, but trust me, you are in the minority, and true DAWG fans, will have the last laught.

I am excited about Bulldog football the same as I have been since 1964. Every new season brings possibilities. Even with the “dream recruiting season” it is best to play it down and do the talking on the field. Little changes in staffing and the worst offensive cord in the SEC don’t bode well for UGA even with somewhat of an easy schedule. I hope CMR can pull it all together-if he doesn’t it will be his last year at the helm.

This is like the special olympics, everyone is a winner at the beginning of the season…. yaaaaaaa! Bottom line, half of all NCAA teams will be 0-1. After that confidence is shot, it’s much easier to go 0-2. Playing two teams in the top 25 in the first 2 weeks is a huge task. Dawgs needs to come to reality that a couple of freshman coming into the SEC to play the SEC east champs and a BCS blue smurfs isn’t going to turn our program around… Be prepared to kick your dogs and yell at the kids for the first 2 weeks, we may very well go 0-2… Just saying…

Hate to break it to the delusional UGA fans, but you DO NOT drastically change the strength and speed of your team vs other SEC and college teams in one summer.
It is a pipe dream.
This isn’t a Rocky movie where the former film projector guy has some hidden formula which the professional strength coaches who have a lifetime of study, research and experience somehow do not know about? It is like asking your front desk receptionist to take over your IT department and thinking that just because she loves the company, the IT guys are magically going to be 75% better. Pipe Dream.
There simply isn’t enough time in the 9 months in the offseason to make measurable difference. A team would be having to work at a 200% rate to make a difference over other SEC teams, even the slackers teams who may only be working at 80%.
It comes down to the players and unfortunately UGA does not have those this year.
SEC rank of UGA players:

LB 8
SS 5
CB 6
QB 1 or 2

(wonder how many of them passed up a football scholarship). And they want all to think that they are in the top 10% of their workforce. Wrong again wonder boy, get back to work, you are on the clock, GO DAWGS

This UGA team is loaded—maybe the best team since the 80s. Look for easy wins over Boise St and SC. Ga’s toughest games will be miss state and auburn—florida will be terrible this year and Ga should blow them out. Ga tech? Get real—dawgs win that game by 30+!. This is the year of the dawg–take it to the bank!

First off, UGA fans and others call this because we got everyone from the state of georgia that we wanted for the first time in a long time without losing a few here and there to other sec schools like florida and alabama.
Second, what is the problem with being optimistic as a coach. You think the team will play well if the coach comes out in press conferences and says yeah we aren’t very good and will probably have the same record. get over it people. we have the talent to do well this season and we have the easiest SEC schedule possible avoiding Bama, LSU, and Arkansas

I’ve never cursed Richt & Bobo but I’ve clearly stated my opinion why this staff should have been fired last season.
Backing a losing/no clue coach is not being a (TRUE FAN).
In my opinion it means being a blind fool.
Regrettably it will take yet another losing, embarrassing season before Richt and his buddies are vacated from my beloved Athens.

Can’t wait for that first game! CMR has made positive staff changes. Coach G has more players to suit his defense. Hopeful that a couple of freshman can have productive seasons. Boise is not going to know what hit them. The Dome is going to be ridiculously noisy- full of UGA fans. GO DAWGS!!

I’m with you, Unleashed. Defense is going to be much improved. We have the best QB in the SEC and one of the best in the country. I like the fact that we ran a couple of guys off that thought the strength and conditioning program was too tough (waaaaah!) It’s going time to get mean and nasty Junkyard Dawgs!

HM, Murray’s heady and tough. Having a solid returning QB is always a plus in our league. Bama, Ark. & Auburn are going to find that out early this season. Hopefully, Crowell will make an impact quickly and not make too may freshman mistakes.

I hope CMR is correct in his assumption of having a big year in Athens this season. But if he is wrong and doesn’t have a big year all is not lost for CMR. There is a job opening at UNC and there will be possibly another job opening at Clemson after the season. In the ACC you can win 7 or 8 games at Chapel Hill and the Tar Heels primary football rival is the Duke Blue Devils who won’t give him as much h_ll as UF did. At Clemson the expectations are a little higher but if you win 8 or 9 games, play for 2nd in the Atlantic Division and get to the Music City Bowl or the Chick Fila Peach Bowl you can rest easy. So even if CMR fails at UGA this season there is a possibility he can rebound instantly in the ACC.

Whoever said good guys finish last never met CMR. He will be a head coach at either UGA, UNC, or Clemson next season !!! Eleven long years w/o an elusive National Title at UGA is long enough (especially if one goes 2-9 vs. UF). At UNC he will restore the honorable trust, which is long gone with NCAA, and bring righteous order to the ruins of the chaotic, irresponsible, and corrupt reign of Butch”It’s all my fault” Davis. Or at Clemson he can bring back the glorious second coming of the good ole underchieving and overachieving days of Tommy Bowden. CMR is too big to fail and too legit to quit !! Go CMR !! UGA’s lost is the ACC’s gain !!

CMR will be on the hoseat once the administration says he is. Until then, his job is safe, and I beleive UGA will have a decent season, even with all that has taken place in the off season. I hope he is in for the long haul at UGA, because he is a person you can respect as a coach as well as a decent human being. He knows how to coach and win, and he will do so this year.

Can every year be a rebuilding year for Georgia? Does “just wait til next year” have to be the hope of improvement? How much longer can UGA survive all the injuries? “Blackouts” are fun but they don’t win games. I don’t think the fans are angry, just frustrated. Don’t get me wrong, I admire and respect Mark Richt and I hope UGA does well this year. Still, it seems to me that if he knows how to change all the things that have hampered the Dawgs, why didn’t he do it last season? The Liberty Bowl was a total train wreck for UGA. Sad state of affairs.

A QB doesn’t make a game of football. He has to have some support. Murray will have a better cast this year, and the wins will come. I would take this young man over a dozen Garcias anyday. He is stepping up into the leadership role this year, and from what I have read, he is insuring that other members of the team get with the program.
