Hoover, Ala. – Alabama was the choice of the assembled media here to win the 2011 SEC championship, which was no shock. Everybody exalts Alabama nowadays. It was in January 2010, after the Crimson Tide won the first of what would be one consecutive BCS title, that Sports Illustrated proclaimed it “a dynasty,” and it was only last fall we were wondering if Bama was unbeatable.
Then it lost to South Carolina, to LSU and to Auburn (after leading 24-0 in Tuscaloosa), and suddenly we media folks were grasping: How did the program newly seen as the nation’s flagship finish in the bottom half of the SEC West? Didn’t another school from Alabama take the BCS title? Was it possible the dynastic Tide had been overblown?
Guess not. Because we media types are doing it again. The Tide figures to start the season ranked no worse than No. 2 (behind Oklahoma and nobody else) in the polls, and in the conference-sanctioned balloting for SEC champ it drew 62.4 percent of the 157 votes cast. This despite losing four first-round NFL draftees (Marcell Dareus, Julio Jones, James Carpenter and Mark Ingram) and starting quarterback Greg McElroy.
Asked Friday about this apparent incongruity, Alabama’s coach said: “From a logical standpoint, I know there’s a couple other teams in our division — forget about the league — that have just as many returning starters and their quarterback. So even though [sarcasm alert] I have a tremendous amount of respect for the intelligence level and your ability to prognosticate … I don’t understand how you come to the decisions you do.”
The answer, this correspondent of limited intellect would submit, has to do with Alabama’s coach. Nick Saban is considered the best collegiate coach now working by as great a distance as Dwight Howard is regarded as the NBA’s top center. Saban has won BCS titles at different SEC outposts, which proved his black magic was transferable. And it isn’t so much that folks believe Saban is smarter than everyone else but that we know he’ll work his 30-hour days until he figures things out.
Alabama fans are difficult to please — a guy bearing an ursine nickname won pretty big in Tuscaloosa — but they’ve venerated Saban from the moment he arrived. Indeed, a cult of personality has arisen around this coach, and that’s something you don’t often see in SEC football. There was one surrounding Paul W. Bryant and also about Steve Spurrier (though he qualified as an Evil Genius only at Florida), but Vince Dooley (six SEC titles, one national championship) and Urban Meyer (two BCS titles) never had one.
With Saban, it’s really a cult of impersonality. Sometimes it seems the sole difference between Saban and his near-namesake Satan is that the devil has a sense of humor. It was Saban who famously spent the press briefing after Alabama’s breakthrough victory over No. 3-ranked Georgia in 2008 — the Tide led 31-0 after two quarters on the road — raging about how his team had been outscored by 20 points in the second half.
“I know I don’t look happy,” Saban said that night, “but I am.”
Saban never looks happy. The man is so driven you wonder how he hasn’t yet driven himself, and those who work under him, insane. He cracked one smile during his half-hour appearance before the print media Friday, and then only to make fun of Baton Rouge writer Glenn Guilbeau, whom Saban described as “a friend.” (Coach Satan has friends? Who knew?)
As odd as it sounds, the glowers have become Saban’s stock in trade. He appears to take football more seriously than anyone else in his industry, and this plays well in the South, where college football is taken most seriously, and in his state, which is mad for the game.
Another incongruity: The manically intense Saban spent a couple of minutes Friday suggesting that Auburn-Alabama rivalry has grown too intense. “We can be all be a little more respectful to each other and still have just as a fierce a competition on the field as we’ve ever had,” he said.
But that was it for moderation. Saban devoted most of his time to the boilerplate stuff — focus, commitment, all that jazz — and then he stalked away, the smell of sulfur in his wake. Gazing on him, we thought to ourselves, “What mortal can possibly stand against such fury?”
Les Miles, maybe?

Four first rounders Mark, I believe James Carpenter a left tackle was late in the first round. The talent is being stockpiled. Nine first team all SEC with six on defense, WOW!! We have won 36 games in the last three years and people like to say we were down last year with 3 losses. We will not win all our games every year but I like our chances. I know everyone is jealous but get over it. All the nuts that say he will leave one day. Sure he will to retire or take another job but while he is here we will be very good. I think that is all we can ask of anyone. And just so no one is confused when LSU won in 07, 16 of the 22 starters were recruited by Saban. RTR

That why Alabama underachieved last year. People talk UGA at 6-7 look at all the parts they had to replace. Bammer was returning the Heisman Trophy winner, his All Word backup, a QB who had not lost since the 2nd grade. The second best receiver in the conference in JJ. The best OLman in Carpenter since John Hannah. A defense that was only rivaled by the ‘85 Bears. This team should have gone undefeated but yet found a way to blow a 24 point lead to the $180,000 dollar man, Cam Newton. Bammer lost 3 games and now here we find ourselve again wondering just how will they blow this season. If they could not handle the success of winning the MNT how will they be able to handle the pressure that LSU and Arkansas put on them. This Alabama team is no where near as talented and lacks leadership at the vital role of QB.

I know Richt has not won a national championship @ UGA, but to say he hasn’t been close is not true. I know close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades, but if college football had a playoff format like every other sport known to man, UGA would have been in the hunt for a championship several times during Richt’s tenure.

The John McKay quote is my all time favorite. My favorite Bryant (which decent media can’t quote) was when they asked him in the 60’s (can’t remember the year) about Notre Dame being awarded the NC with a tie on their record and Alabama second althoughundefeated. Bear said “I don’t like to get S*rewed unless I’ve been kissed first.”
I am been to several alumni gatherings where Saban spoke. He was always quite jovial. I think he saves that growl for sports media.

No doubt, Saban is an intense person. But, why criticize someone who loves his job and expects perfection? He tries to surround himself with perfectionists too. And, results show that his ways work. So, why make him out to be a bad person? He’s not a bad person. He’s the envy of college football because he’s driven to perfection and wants all around him to be the same way. In the business world, that would be Apple and Steve Jobs.

Lowcountry, you’re forgetting that this year’s team has trial by fire experience that’s held by highly coveted players. This year is projected to be better than last year for a few reasons. One, more experience everywhere, except QB. Two, Alabama doesn’t have to face six opponents who had the luxury of a bye week before the contest. Three, injuries have healed. Alabama was plagued by injuries last year. At Auburn alone, injuries took out parts of the OL, offensive backfield, secondary, and the receiving corps. This year’s team has depth at just about every position. The only question at the moment is LT, which Barrett Jones can handle. Leadership is plentiful in Hightower, Richardson, Jones, Vlachos, Barron, Lester, and Upshaw. And my last point is this: Are you telling me that you UGA fans wouldn’t salivate over a 10-3 season with a blowout in the Capital One Bowl? I suggest you watch the highlights on youtube and observe how a higher ranked Michigan State got owned by a healthy and rested Crimson Tide. That’s a big reason why Alabama is feared by all of its opponents this year.

Lowcountry, you couldn’t be more wrong in your assessment. Bama fans who were really tuned in last offseason were very concerned about the high praise given to a team with such a young defense. You just don’t replace guys with the experience of McClain, Reamer, Deaderick, Cody, Arenas, Jackson, and Johnson without mistakes. In addition, Dareus and Upshaw spent most of the season dealing with high ankle sprains. Amazingly, that defense was still good enough (and well-coached enough) to dominate most of the time. The one achilles heel, not surprisingly, was the big play. USCe, the Barn, and LSU all outscored us with long gainers in the passing game. I really think Kirkpatrick and Milliner will show up big this year at CB, and the Barron/Lester combo might be the best safety tandem in the country. Add to that a LB corps that returns literally everybody and a DL that replaces only two departing (from the roster, not just the starting lineup) with two NFL-caliber juco transfers, and you have the makings of a ridiculous defense. Offensively TR will be fine at RB, we have two four star QB prospects (we all know Nick ain’t airing it out much anyway), and Duron Carter coming in to help replace Julio’s production.

Nice descriptive article Mr. Bradley.
As a guy who is in around the league for 30 plus years I have seen some great men, great coaches, great recruiters and some great assistant coaches who did not have the drive or the skill set to be good head coaches. On the other hand we have seen coaches like Saban, Richt, Spurrier, Meyer, Fulmer, Bryant, Dye, Stallings, even Houston Nutt (with Malzahn) hire assistant coaches and put them in situations to be successful and then move on to better jobs. If you have coaches who are elevating through the ranks of coaching then you are doing something right. If you have coaches who are elevating through the ranks of coaching and they are successful it means your program and processes are right. Saban does them all.
In todays College Football world of limited time with your players, no athletic dorms, and limited recruiting the coaches (especially in the SEC) have to really handle the small details and set a plan that will allow your coaches, your administrators, your support staff and your student athletes to excel in every aspect of the program.
As an Alabama fan first, SEC fan second it is we should all want our brothers across the SEC to be successful. Now with Muschamp at Florida and Jimbo Fisher(ACC) at Florida State we will get to see if the processes and fundamentals instilled in the people around Saban is a solid foundation or if Coach Saban is doing it with smoke and mirrors and or fear.
I really could care less if any other fan “liked” the head coach at my school, however when it comes to respect we all hope others do respect the guys in charge of our programs.
Good Luck to all of you and your football teams this fall.

“Because Its Coach Scares Us [the media] to Death”
This is one problem with UGA-the pr people do too good a job accommodating the media.
The kind of penny ante bs FOIA stuff re scooter accidents the AJC passes off as reporting, and the RICHT FAILS BECAUSE HE DIDN’T HIRE A DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR FAST ENOUGH, RIGHT JEFF? YOU GOT IT MARK! analysis of the UGA program, and well as snarky twitter comments, would all get a news organization the big freeze out at Alabama (or UF or AU or UT).
I wish UGA would start telling the AJC to go suck eggs whenever any sort of access was requested. It’s time UGA understood that the AJC is primarily a college football (and especially a UGA football) newspaper. Uncovering APS corruption is nice, but day in and day out people read the print or online versions primarily for UGA coverage. Time for Georgia to use some of the power it has to even the reporting playing field.

I will be the first to admit that Alabama did not fair as well as we had expected. But while finishing 4th in SEC West, but finishing in the top 10 of the Final BCS poll behind Auburn and LSU and ahead of Arkansas, South Carolina, Mississippi St speaks well for the final product.
Playing 9 teams with open weeks prior to playing Alabama demonstrates the importance those teams placed on playing Alabama. Those are not excuses as the final score is the deciding and only factor and blowing a 24 point lead is enough in itself.

A team with 2 NCs (thirty years ago being the last time) shouldn’t go around trying to poke one with 12 NCs in the eye. You’ll get hurt.
Also, “lowcountry” doesn’t refer to the city of Charleston, SC as the term includes a greater area than just a single city. Savannah, for example, is part of the lowcountry. Obviously you’ve never left your cell.
That’ s why it’s called lowCOUNTRY, not lowCITY.

In your blog yesterday, I think you said he is the best college coach in the business. What has happened between you and CMR? Has he offended you in some way or have you just decieded that you want to switch allegience (sp)?

36 wins in 3 years- an average of 12 per year, is not consistent? Not sure what planet you live on. And what was that about Saban leaving? So during the 5 years he’s now been at Bama the following jobs have come open, the cowboys, steelers, and others in the NFL, and in college the following jobs came open- USC, Ohio St, Michigan, Notre Dame, UF, Neb, Miami, FSU, and Saban’s name has not even been mentioned as a candidate for one of them jobs. Notta one. keep dreaming buddy. Keep dreaming.

The bantering between Bama and UGA is senseless. No one from either school is going to stop and say….”Oh yea, your right, my school sucks.” We love our Universities that’s for sure. Both schools are respectable. I love my Dawgs, but they have a lot more to prove than Bama does this year.
Personally, I don’t care what Bama, Auburn UF etc.. does this coming year. I just want to see IF the Dawgs are going to play a full game this year and turn it around! Only game that team should be thinking about right now is BOISE STATE! This will not be the walk over it was a couple years back.

He’s great at taking a mediocre program and instilling discipline and making them very good in a short time. However, His personality tends to wear thin on players in short order. He lost his best wr, rb and qb. If Trent Richardson gets hurt Bama will lose 4-5 games. He will go 9-4 this year and off to the NFL…BOOK IT DANO

And btw we have 9 players back on defense including several all americans and potentially 4 first round players on defense alone- Barron- projected top safety, Dre Kirkpatrick- projected top corner, Upshaw- jack linebacker, Hightower- inside linebacker. . Gonna be fun lining up against your offense this year that has all of 3 starters back including just 1 O-lineman and no Scam newton. Gonna be a feast in fact.

Yes but I believe it was either Mel Kiper or the other pro scout that has him as the top corner pick for the 2012 draft. Not only that but they have him projected as the top Bama player to go and think he goes somewhere between 8 and 15. Its based not on his stats so far which have been good but not great but is based on his potential and his size and speed. You don’t see that many 6′2 or 6′3 corners that have great speed. Frankly I don’t understand how he can be rated so high and rated above the other bama players on the board like Trent Richardson or Mark Barron but he is.

Saban is a very good coach and seems to be clearly more dedicated his craft than Richt (AT THE MOMENT!) But there are some flaws with Saban that people should note. VERY #1 how did he blow a 24 point lead with a team as talented as he had last season?. #2 how come the only player off his LSU NC team that’s doing very well in the NFL Laron Landry? (the same Laron Landry who Michael Vick made a complete fool of on national TV last season) .
One thing for certain; Falcon fans should not get their hopes up too high if Julio Jones doesn’t have a greater impact in the NFL than Landry. If Jones does not prove to be worth what the Falcons traded to get him, then I will have write a whole blog page about Saban’s flaws, not just the half page I could do right now!

While I was there some Auburn pukes snuck over (apparently during summer) and planted WAR EAGLE in some other strain of grass all across the quad at Bama. It was real apparent from a distance what it said. Pretty well done prank.
I actually kind of like Alabama because I did have some good times there. It was Bear Bryants last year so that shows how old I am. But these unwelcom Bama invaders on here are starting to change my mind. Oh well…at least they are not the Auburn Thugocracy. My feeling is that he simply retires in another 5-7 years. His wife and he have said this is the last stop, he has a daughter who is a soph at UA, and he has a committment of 100k a year to the scholarship fund for another 5 years. We certainly won’t win it every year or dominate for a long stretch. Too much balance and power in the SEC for anyone to stay on top forever- those days are over. We just want to be consistently good and every few years have the magic to vault to the top. That’s all anyone can realistically ask for and this year will be especially difficult because there are 3 other damn good teams in the west. Ark may win the division- they are looking tough as is LSU which is a top 3 team. Miss state would win a conference title if they played anywhere else. It will just be another brutal season in the sec and hard to see anyone emerge unscathed. I’m looking forward mainly to the Ark and LSU games myself- going to be great ones.

The thing about Saban is that he would not have had talent like Stafford, Knowshon, MoMas, and AJ on the same team…and not won the SEC.
There is something a little soft about Richt…that makes him an inferior coach to Mr. Saban.

RTR,
Will never measure up to the tradition off the field???? Are you kidding me!? Nothing is appealing about Alabama except winning. When Georgia is talked about it goes beyond winning. Athens Georgia is the greatest college town on earth. Sanford Stadium is the greatest stadium on earth. UGA is the number one mascot in college football. Georgia had the greastest college football player to ever step on the field. Georgia had the greatest college football announcer to ever call a game. The list goes on and on. How could you possibly say we dont stack up to your off field tradition? Your arrogance and ignorance offends me, go to your room and clean up before mama gets home.

Coach Saban is a true professional and appears to manage every aspect of the game in a superb manner – just like the Bear. But he did coach his team into a defeat against Auburn in Tuscaloosa after a first half blow-out. This did happen and even happened to the Bear on occasion. I would not trade Coach Saban for any other coach in the profession and hopefully he will have a record, and bring fame to Bama, over time just like Coach Bryant. JB was obviously talking about footall programs. UGA football has been on probation for major football violations 1 time, in the mid-80s.
That’s 1.
And even then, the infractions were not about recruiting, but about remedial studies (yes, Techies, Jan Kemp) programs for student-athletes. That mess cost our president his job, and ended the remedial studies program.
To try and compare our football program to Bama’s endless probations is silly.

I’m an Alabama fan, and appreciate what he has done. His first couple of years were actually fun. He said some funny things….believe it or not I think he does have a great sense of humor, and it was interesting seeing his energy on the sidelines. The last two years however, especially last year, were a grind. He got boring, and slunk into a horrific ‘coachspeak’ mode. His press conferences are full of psychobabble, and everything is a chore.
I think Alabama will be average this year. Losing to Penn State, LSU, Florida and horrors Auburn.
Young quarterbacks will be factors in all of those losses.
My next prediction is that Saban gets a lot more criticism than he is accumstomed to and leaves. As successful as he’s been….and again…..I appreciate him…..but everything is a chore for him, and he saps some, if not a lot of the fun out of the game. But Roll Tide anyway.

I think Bama disappoints again this year. Their defense is obviously dominant, but their offense got bogged down against LSU and Auburn last season, and now they don’t have McElroy, Ingram or Julio Jones. You can’t understate those losses.
Bama peaked in 2009, the same way Georgia did in ‘02, Auburn did in ‘04, LSU did in ‘07, and Florida did in ‘08. It’s simply too hard to dominate the SEC year after year.

When Saban retires is he going to be thought of as a “Bama Man?” Hardly. He doesn’t give a flying flip about your school save for the fact that it’s cutting his massive checks. Sure, he can coach. He’s the coaching equivalent of Cam Newton – a hired assassin. The only difference between LSU and you Bama ‘tards is that LSU wasn’t dumb enough to build a bronze statue of a common job-hopper. Have you ever been South Central Florida? Go to Wikipedia and type in Trailer Park and see what picture comes up on the right side of the page. You will laugh.
I was just responding to the comment about 90,000 trailer park people filling up Bryant Denny Stadium. I thought it was a funny comment and have no ax to grind with anyone. The fact is all teams have great Alumni and we all have sidewalk fans who have a tendancy to embarrass our institutions that we actually attended. That is just part of life.
The Coaches at every school seem to be good stewards and provide so many unknown contributions that we can be proud of. Saban has “Nick’s Kids”, Richt does missionary work at home and abroad, Derek Dooley’s Children’s Charity, Dan Mullen’s clothing drive, Will Muschamp’s Scramble for Charity for the Boys and Girls Club, Steve Spurrrier and his charity work for the SC Cancer Society, Joker Phillip’s Swings for Soldiers, Gene Chizik’s Children’s Charity, Houston Nutt the Mississippi Boys and Girls Clubs, Les Miles Charity work for Leukemia and Lymphoma. The list goes on and on.
Our coaches in the SEC and at other schools(as well) do so many things to make us proud and unless a coach does something to hurt a kid, there is no reason to get personal about these fine men who spend their lives being dissected and magnified while we anonymously go about our lives.

I think you need to attend a speaking engagement Mrs. Terry Saban is giving in two weeks at the Galleria in Birmingham for her Charity. She just recently stated she could work many many more years on the charity and the only way she could do it was with Nick coaching and leaving the charity to her. She sounded like she wants at least 5 more from her latest comments. She stated her goals were to see the complete rebuild of “all” the tornado damaged areas across the south and she was working with other coaches wives throughout the conference to insure the people affected across the south were helped fully.

Richt also knows all too well how important this season is for him as well as the Bulldogs. Richt laughed about the difficulty of being at an SEC school for more than a decade.
“It’s not difficult if you win nine, 10, 11 a year, win the Eastern Division every other year, win the SEC every three or four years,” he said. “It’s not a problem at all.
“It’s when you [finish] 6-7. That’s when it’s a problem. But greater days are coming. The best is yet to come.”

Coach Saban is the best college coach in the country because he’s a no-nonsense, hard-nosed coach who ALWAYS has his team ready to play. They NEVER take a half to get going. When they lose a game, it is usually very obvious that the other team is better than they are…and they often win a few of those, too. And you NEVER see Coach Saban popping up with this “new uniform” nonsense that…to my great regret…the coach of MY favorite team seems to live by.
And you will NEVER see players on a Saban-coached team dancing and boogeying on the sidelines in the fourth quarter of a game they’re losing…like we saw at Georgia three years ago.

Got to love an Auburn saying they have never been scared of Nick Saban. The first 3 years he was at Alabama he ran off the Head Coach of Auburn, The BOT, and controlled the recruiting inside the state of Alabama. It took a “bagman” or several “bagmen” to even get Auburn off the mat. Now we all know Chizik is the puppet and the money being thrown around the south at high school players is at an all time high due to the money Auburn uses to get the highest rated players but poorest players to commit to Auburn. You can buy players but you cannot buy class. We as UGA fans have seen the players who were great players but bad characters come through our doors and run on the fields in Athens.
We are just now seeing the quality of players Auburn recruits with the mutiple arrest of a woman beater, and 4 armed robbers. It is just the beginning for the low character players who will make more headlines for their off the field antics than their performances on the field. But Oh! That is right the Preacher himself Gene Chizik is running a ministry down there and the prayer meetings he holds is going to keep those rogue players in line.
Go ahead and make your comments about CMR and our problems at UGA. The difference is that Coach Richt is now forcing players to attend class and be reputable student athletes, while at Auburn players do not go to class, but they get grades for classes not in attendance and collect their envelopes to help them with their nights at the sandpiper supper club.

I’m an Atlanta guy now living in Birmingham. Nothing prepares you for the intensity of fans over here. Saban is practically worshiped. I used to be a big football fan. But years of hearing about Alabama/Auburn 365 days a year has gotten old. I now dread football season. Saban is obviously a great coach, but in my opinion, he comes across as a complete jerk.

Alabama didn’t blow the lead against auburn. Auburn just woke up. Anyone who watched that game knows auburn walked into a buzz saw that day. Alabama came out fired up and the au defense (two lineman suspended) gave up some big plays and blown coverages early. In the second half au got their lineman back and controlled both lines of scrimmage. Bama got their points on blown plays and coverages. Auburn got their points by methodically driving it down bamas throat and have key fourth down conversions. Bama is lucky auburn muffed the punt return or they would have been shut out in the second half instead of their little field goal.
As for saban the man can coach but he shouldn’t be feared. The man has losses to lousiana monroe and tulane on his resume. He also only has one second title in 4 seasons at bama which sounds about average and par for the course to me. His teams are coached well but they are beatable.

Independence Bowl Experience
Mark, Sabin is the kind of coach that can use a visit to the Independence Bowl as a learning experience, then go on to win National Championships. He did that twice already, first as coach of Michigan State then he went on to win the NC at LSU, then as Head Coach of Bama. Most of the Georgia teams that visit Shreveport don’t learn anything, and it is largely because of bad press which generatte low expectations and a gripe sessions instead of an opportunity to hone the team skills. Its just how you view your opportunities, Mark, and whether the experience is beneath your dignity or not.

Saban is one shady dude, no question about it!……….But those who would still pray to the alter of the late Paul “Bear” Bryant………folks I have proof…….and you can look it up. Coach Bryant used to run all atheletics at Alabama, thus, he used basketball, baseball, tennis, swimming, track, vollyball, and basketweaving scholarships to load up his football teams with talent, if you couldn’t cut it, he’d cut you, and just simply replace you………more rules changes were the result of Bryants “cheating ways” than any other school or coach in college football……..I’m a Georgia boy, no Tech fan………But I don’t blame Bobby Dodd for leaving the SEC for this very reason……Bryant put fear in the media…….so does Saban……..But I’ll tell you one thing for sure, everyone in the SEC is gunning for some Alabama butt kicking this year………..by the time the final poles are posted I’ll be surprised if Alabama is in the top 25……….Regards to the Tide, RED

Bama got their points on blown plays and coverages. Auburn got their points by methodically driving it down bamas throat and have key fourth down conversions.
Boy, if that isn’t some revisionist history. Four plays turned the “tide” so to speak:
- The most ridiculous bounce I’ve ever seen when Ingram had the ball poked out from behind at the Barn 20, the oblong ball then somehow staying in bounds rolling all he way to the end zone right down the sidelines.
- Trent dropped the easiest TD pass you’ll ever see.
- The McElroy fumble/injury replacement OG Steen being completely oblivious to his surroundings.
- The long pass to Zachery where one-armed Mark Barron tried to swat at the ball with his good arm instead of using the sideline as his friend, turning a decent gain into a TD.
As far as Bama’s lack of offensive production in the second half, folks forget that Julio sprained his knee in the first half of that game and Hanks bruised his ribs. Then, of course, McElroy went down late. Seeing as how the Barn’s weakness all year was pass defense (Julio had 199 yards in basically half a game), I’d say it was pretty lucky that injuries derailed that part of Bama’s game. Combine that with the lightning-in-a-bottle-maybe-purchased-maybe-not-one-year-wonder-juco-transfer Heisman winner and you just have to say it was their year.

The truth is that Alabama recruits Georgia youth better than UGA does and that incites jealousy, We need too and these Chick Filet Classic Kick offs give us even more of a boost.
Alabama is a household name in CFB, and is the flag ship of the SEC fleet. I wish we were ranked in the second ten of the top twenty and allow is to earn the rank on the field, Our kids got caught reading the papers before the USCe game last season and I oicked that game as a stumbling block for the Tide as well. We came back on them but it was way to little and late to change the outcome.
We don’t run up the score on teams when the outcome is decided, don’t have to and Saban and staff never seem to get credit for that and it is unfortunate.
I guess it doesn’t fit the persona grata of the villian…

Alabama wins because they have a coach who wants to win more than anything and has the intelligence, ability and determination to do so. UGA doesn’t win because it has a coach who would rather be beating the bushes in some God-forsaken third world country then winning football games and whose ability to win games from a coaching standpoint is questionable at best. Therein lies the reason Saban has two NC’s to his credit and Richt will never have so much as one.

re: 6:49 a.m. post
You’re right, the NCAA didn’t hit OSU with a “Failure to Monitor”…and they shouldn’t have, because OSU did not fail to monitor.
OSU knew EXACTLY what was going on. The head coach KNEW…beyond doubt…that several players had committed violations that made them ineligible. Yet he played them anyway, and covered it up with that “they’ve promised to return and serve a five game suspension” BS. What OSU did was worse than “Failure to Monitor”. The coach monitored the situation like he was supposed to…found out that certain players’ actions rendered them athletically ineligible…and continued to play them.
OSU is trying to contain the damage by blaming it all on Tressel, and he probably deserves the lion’s share of the blame. In my opinion, that fact should be the ONLY reason OSU doesn’t get the death penalty.

From Wikipedia:
LSU enters the 2011 season with 721 victories, the 12th most in NCAA history, and the 4th most of any SEC team, behind only Alabama (792), Tennessee (783), and Georgia (731). LSU entered the 2010 season with a 0.641 all-time winning percentage, the 14th best in the NCAA, and the 4th best in the SEC, behind only Alabama (0.707), Tennessee (0.692), and Georgia (0.646).
LSU officially claims three national championships (1958, 2003 & 2007). In their 121-year history, the Buckeyes claim seven national championships, but were consensus national champions six times. (7-3 = 4)
Since beginning play in 1892, the Crimson Tide program has claimed 13 national championships.

Saban is a great football coach……..a given. But to say (jay) he built two programs, LSU, and Alabama, into national champs from “the ground up”, is a bit condesending to the players and coaches before him, at both universities mentioned. Also, any coach, or individual for that matter, who requires a button to open or close an office door is……well……let it speak for itself. As a UGA fan and avid follower for 40 years, respect for Mr. Saban is warranted. But football certainly exsisted at both UA and LSU before he arrived and damn sure will continue after his departure…….

@Bama Dude…
———————————————————————————-
I will give you that Auburn’s second TD to open the second half was a big play and your safety did not cut over properly which could be considered a blown coverage. But the rest of the game was either one of two things…either bad plays by Auburn or good plays/domination by Auburn. It didn’t matter what Bama did on that day, it was what Auburn did, as evidenced by our 14-0 record. Surely, you saw that Auburn had problems with wide receivers all year and saw the stats they kept posting about how all the teams in the SEC big receivers had big games against us, Green, Jeffries, Jones etc. It didn’t matter all year. We continued to find a way to win. The Mark Ingram fumble was indeed a fortunate bounce for Auburn but a great defensive play nonetheless and a forced turnover, so was Fairly’s near the goal line. The rest of the game was controlled by Auburn on both sides of the ball and the rest of our drives were calculated drives with good decisions and play calling. After Lutzenkirchen scored the last TD they put the camera on Saban and Smart and they are arguing and they clearly were upset about the defensive play calling or schemes. They simply got outcoached in the game.
I respect Alabama but you have to understand it gets a little old always having to hear you guys make excuses every time you lose to us. It’s a little insane since the past 30 years we have held the advantage. Thats a long time and many fans can’t wrap their head around the concept that just because Alabama won a lot of game and “voted” national championships 40-50 years ago, that it somehow should erase what is going on in the present I understand that tradition is important and should never be taken away, but you must realize that the present is just as important and should also never be taken away.
If any Bama fans tries to suggest that they laid down, or gave up, and some have gone as far as to say that Slive called Saban at half time and told him to blow the game so Auburn could stay in the national title hunt for conference money is just downright comical and disrespectful. The bottom line is Alabama was trying and playing hard to win that game, they just didn’t this year.

It’s amusing – and very ignorant – to perpetuate the notion that somehow SEC teams or any FBS school are “scared” of Alabama and its midget coach, Osaban Bin Lyin. Last year, SC, LSU, and Auburn didn’t get the memo, just like Utah a few years back in the Sugar Bowl, blowing out a double-digit favorite while playing two time zones and 2300 miles away from home.

Many of you don’t understand that Alabama replaced almost the entire defense last year with some freshmen and many many soph’s thus we weren’t ready for primetime. Well the youth isn’t a problem now sport and we don’t have 6 teams with open dates to contend with either and I bet your team doesn’t as well!!!! Bama might not win the NC but it will be in the hunt each and every year that Nick Saban is at Bama. The one thing you must know is that your HC is working hard because they must in order to stick with Nick and Bama so you can thank Nick for that. Red…you don’t know sheet about Coach Bryant. Saban is orders of magnitude better than Richt. So no matter how much recruiting we do, we will be perennial losers. We are literally wasting three million dollars a man with Mark Richt who impesonates the Dali Lama while in transcendental meditation on the sidelines during games. Why doesn’t the Bulldog Nation demand better?

UGA’s football program has much more money than Alabama’s, and the school’s academic reputation is much, much better. So why don’t we demand that UGA’s senior leadership find and pay for a world class coach like Alabama has done? See, Alabama is smarter than Georgia in this regard. UGA is jealous of Saban. If Saban or Spurrier or Petrino or Mullins or almost any other SEC coach were head coach of the Bulldogs, they would immediately attain immortal status among the fan base. How long must this bs with da Preacha Man go on?

“He (Saban) wins EVERYWHERE he goes.” Let’s ask the Dolphins for confirmation of that absolute statement, preferably with the two SB trophies “He” delivered with that sparkling 15-17 record. To quote CFB HOF’er Jim Mandich, an All American at Michigan who played for Schembechler in college and some guy named Don Shula in pros at Miami. “Nick Saban? The biggest phony, fake, two-bit lyer I’ve ever come across.”

If Nick Saban were coach at UGA bringing in championships and number one recruiting classes, he would be put on a pedestal and worshipped by these same Richt zombies in the fan base. Pure and simple, they are just jealous of Alabama’s success and too stupid to make the changes necessary to compete.

Revised:
Saban doesn’t cheat. He simply outworks everyone in the college game and demands that all his coaches and players do too. That’s why he wins EVERYWHERE he goes. Its really, really simple. Now this “out work everyone” philosophy doesn’t pay dividends in professional football. Ask Spurier and others. But it sure as heck does in college football on down. And it is why he will dominate not only Georgia but every other SEC team as well.

I noticed you asked earlier about Tide Roll. I don’t even think he’s a Bama fan. I think he’s a Tech fan that posts only on that one dawg site and does it just to needle you guys. Hell the guy doesn’t even know its roll tide. I’ve never seen him post on blogs about Alabama football. I think he’s just some disturbed dude that just posts the same drivel over and over and over and just chooses another team’s handle because with a Tech handle he doesn’t really have any bragging rights over the dawgs.

When you blow a 24 point lead on your home field against your arch rival it tends to remove the fear. Great coaches don’t let this happen.

I believe the key to UGA’s success lies with the players, playing like a team, not losing to those they should beat, and pulling off a game or two where they are not favored. UGA should be able to pull out 9 wins this year, if the players work hard, believe in themselves and work as a team. No great mystery to all that.
You can respect Saban but he is just a human, just like any other mortal man. He has to motivate his players just like any other coach. He has done it better than CMR for a few years, but don’t allow him to be the 12th man on the field.
I guess the same could be said about Spurrier, if we are looking at how coaches teams have been when they played UGA. CMR has a favorable record against S.C. and held his own, in face to face meetings with AL. If he has truly gotten some fire in his gut, and his other coaches step it up, there is no reason for UGA to fear either coach or school. Coach up the players and hope they perform on the field.

Bama Dude: Thanks for the blow by blow description of Bama’s 3rd loss of the 2010 season to Awbarn. Given a dozen “ifs” and the avoidance of dozens of Bama injuries we could have had another Bama NC. Maybe if we all petition the NCAA we can have a replayed AU – Bama game. I’m surprised we haven’t already tried this. Everyone knows that no teams other than Bama had injuries so lets get moving on this appeal. May as well ask for your dozen “ifs” also. Don’t expect any assistance from The Barn though. They have developed an allergy to anything NCAA related.

Just some thoughts……….
I wish Nick Saban was coaching Georgia. The Gator losses would stop, period. I am sick and tired of loosing to that bunch.
I have a hard time throwing Saban under the bus when I see the likes of Julio, Mark, Marcel and Greg. Great kids and true role models…
I think Bama’s defense is going to as close as one can get to NFL quality. Look for several shut outs….
Last, Saban is not just recruiting snot nose kids…he is selling a whole entire package that is turning on the parents of these talented players. He has a saying I love ” We have good people doing good things at Alabama “. Does not sound like SATAN to me.

I, Mr. Tony Geinzer, would say the days of Bama Bashing ended years ago and the days of competing with and around Bama have restarted. I feel that Auburn can’t try to win without cheating and a lot of us Central Iowans want Chizik canned in Auburn and LSU and Ole Miss can’t win no more and Mississippi State and Arkansas is on Bama’s Level, but, the only ones who can hang with Bama is Kentucky. I think the average Georgia Man wants his Coach Dooley back as he is the State’s John Wooden.

Saban is a good coach but bammers are a little odd how they worship coaches.. They really showed up at 6am at a mall in Hoover to just see him? WTH? .Saban does have a 3-4 record against AU for his career and is 2-2 while coaching at bammer.. yet bammers think he “owns” AU? Maybe beause he is 5 ft 6 inches people fear him? Who knows? He will always be one of my favorites…he blew a 24-0 lead at home to us and I will be grateful forever..I love you Saban..
