"Yeah, baby! Time to dance! We're No. 2 and you're not!" (AJC file photo)
Hoover, Ala. – Earlier in the week I’d wondered if the SEC media would, for the first time in memory, pick Georgia above Florida. (Lest we forget, in 2008 the Bulldogs entered the season ranked No. 1 in the land — but had been slotted second behind the Gators in their division.) OK, here’s the answer:
Yes. The assembled SEC media has voted Georgia second in the East behind South Carolina.
Warning: Over time, this body has proved inexact in its forecasts. Only twice since 1991 has the correct league champ been identified during Media Days. (This year’s choice is Alabama.) Still, it’s fascinating to get a sense of how the wind is blowing, at least in the eyes of the SEC press corps.
(Disclaimer: Neither I nor esteemed colleague Chip Towers voted in the poll. The AJC doesn’t allow its writers to participiate in polls or suchlike.)
The balloting for second in the East wasn’t as close as I thought it might be. South Carolina got 114 first-place votes; Georgia drew 38 to Florida’s 12. Four voters picked Georgia to win the SEC. (Rumor has it that their names were Richt, Grantham, Bobo and Crowell. I kid.)
Then again: One voter picked Kentucky to win the East, and two tabbed Ole Miss to win not just the West but the league.
And now I leave you for the moment. Nick Saban is speaking, and he just glared at me because I was typing too loudly. Back soon.

It’s time to win Richt and company. If they don’t win the east it’ s time for Coach Richt to sail on. He brought all this on himself by not keeping BVG ( He could have if he wanted to, money talks!) and hiring a film coach to be his strength and conditioning coach. I am still not sold on BoBo but he has 5 or 7 kids and Richt want make a change if it’s needed. It may not be BoBo’s fault after we learned that our OL has been soft due to inproper conditioning (Richts Falt) I like Mark Richt but He hang onto his friends as coaches to long. He has done a great job of replacing them with real coaches and the ship seems to be headed in correct direction but respect and any fear from other teams is gone and must be rebuilt. If you can’t win at Georgia with all the talent and facilities you can’t win as a coach. If Saban coached at Georgia they would be nearly unbeatable. Good uck Richt! Man up and quit embarrasing our state and yourself.

90% of sports prognosticators pick the team that finished first the year before. Not an overly imaginative process. What’s the old saying, “the future will be exactly like the past up until the moment when it is different.”
Sadly though (I am an ’84 UGA alum), there isn’t much about UGA’s last 3 seasons that would inspire an objective third party to pick them to win much of anything.

The biggest moment in Athens will be this year reacting to Dr. Adams if the Dawgs don’t have a decent year ( that’s all we’re concerned about by the way according to Richt’s comment at the meeting yesterday, which I cringed)If We just kick the can down the road some more. Richt’s quote was , “It get’s tough unless you win 8,9 or 10 games and a SEC title every 4 years or so’….something to that effect……………………. Yes, I know his goal is to go 12-0 every year, But I would I have been happier if he would of Said. “Our goal is to go 13-0 and win the SEC title every year and then the rest takes care of itself”!!!!!!!

In Athens under Mark Richt, “Moving the Chains” typically involves monochrome jumpsuits, shiny wrist and/or leg irons, bright orange vests, trash bags and correctional officers holding shotguns, not anything to do with football.
Maybe some of Richt’s academically ineligible and soon-to-be-incarcerated players will get the change to show off their skills in “Moving the Chains” during the SEC Championship Weekend in December along the State highways for visitors coming to the game.

Your 10:55 post was spot on. Adams loves money and UGA was 2nd in the country last year at making it. How can that be? UGA has not won a NC in any of the three major sports in 20 years!! If you think about it we are average or below average consistently in Football, Basketball and Baseball. However Adams keep bringing in the HUGE amounts of cash. I heard from several big wigs at UGA that CMR had a 2 game season to turn it around. Boise and USCe. If he lost those two it was over. However I just don’t believe that. I just don’t. I think CMR will be the coach until he is ready to retire in the next 3 or 4 years. I saw his presser and it was terrible. He acted like he would rather be on Mars than in that room. He makes $3mil a year! He should be doing cartwheels.

Trouble is it’s gonna take 3-4 games for the freshman and the converted linebacker that you have at RB to learn how to pick up the blitz at the college level. By then Aaron Murray will be as dizzy as McElroy was at that end of the Iron Bowl last year from all the hits-and the Dogs might be 0-2.

Hines Ward is beloved by a huge majority of the USA entertainment world and for many different reasons. NFL dbs fear him if he DOES NOT have the ball, because he will block them off. He hits hard.
This argument that “Hines is on the Fulmer Cup team at UGA” is ridiculous because of his DUI thing. If true, then GT’s greatest rusher in many years, Eddie Lee Ivory and to my way of seeing it, one of the BEST GT rushers ever ( he was great) is ALSO on the Fulmer Cup team …………….but for far more sinister things. G Techers too young to recall this Green Bay Wisconsin incident …………… look it up. He ( Eddie Lee Ivory) then played for the GB Packers. He did time in Wisc pen. Look it up GTechers. What did he do???
Name one UGA fellow and I can name two or three GT men, like Lavin, Mooney and Salisbury over at the old pizza parlor on old N Ave at the now gone Tech Motel. They stomped an itty, bitty girl, her boyfriend and an off duty cop. Look it up.
Joey Hamilton, Reuben Houston or DE Robert Hall for gal slapping, etc. Drug ods at GT?? Hmm? Terrorists on cmapus !!!! Professors STEALING RESEARCH GRANT MONEY,etc

I can recall 6 Top 10 finishes and a final #2 and #3 ranking in the last 10 years. Has Tech fished in the Top 10 in that time? Top 20? Conference Championships?

look at Florida’s schedule EVERY year and tell me about easy. Non-conference games against The Citidel and Akron year after year amkes you NO expert on tough schedules. The Gaytors play 9 games in Florida every year. When is the last time your “bunch” has played outside of the confines of the SEC region?

Beat it to death will ya WDE? Yeah…a year after the NC and we’re supposed to win them all again? Do we need to go 14-0 every year? 10-3 with losses to the SEC West and East champs and LSU. Real terrible there. So where will the Barn finish this year? Something tells me not 10-3.

I loved the comments about the new uniforms. I will give the “excited” guy the benefit of the doubt and allow that his post was all tongue in cheek (for his sake, I hope so). However, the fact that the new “combat” uniforms were rolled out at all during CMR’s presser, and with suspenseful surprise and melodrama, leads me to believe that the benefit of the doubt about the “power of uniforms” should not be given to the entire Puppie Nation. Maybe they want to believe they were all manufactured on the planet Krypton and brought here to planet Earth by Superman? If the Puppies go 0-2 their first two games, will the new uniforms will be put into the same U-Store-It bin as the black helmets and black jerseys? I wouldn’t count out a Saban team, any Saban team. It became a whole different culture at Bama after they had their Mike Shula moment. And also good to remember that it’s the SEC. Weak SEC teams could be playing for the top spot in other conferences. There is no day at the beach for anyone during SEC games, because the “weak” teams make their seasons meaningful by ruining the seasons of tougher rivals and determining who gets the championship or scaring the hell out of them with 1 or 2 point losses. That happens as often as not in the SEC. Nothing more dangerous than being ranked or leading your division, and then playing a “weak” team at home.

The Dawgs could easily win the EAST. They have to beat So. Carolina first and the rest should be easier until the Gators. Dawgs have enough talent the question is will it show up and can they control the PERSONAL FOULS the dawgs love to commit so much.

Let me get this straight … Georgia was picked second in the SEC East? This is the same UGA squad that has more questions about its offensive line and running back corps than a SAT exam. And then there is the absence this season of Mr. Everything A.J. Green, who would rather not play football at all this season with the NFL lockout than stay out with the Dawgs. Mark, thanks for explaining that media voters have been quite less than accurate with their crystal balls over the years, but some of these media members supposedly know a thing or two about the coaches, personnel and team chemistry in the conference. If UGA is picked second in the East, it (as the poll shows) must be a distant second. While the reality is in-conference media polls are for the most part rather meaningless, the poll does provide football fans one useful bit of information — watch the SEC West this season and not the East. The West definitely looks like it will be more competitive.

Well, AJC, you’ve done it again: even with the Gamecocks predicted by everyone to be first in the East, hardly mention them in favor of the so-called “good guys.” Granted, this is GA, the state university, the local, but you cheat the University of South Carolina every time. During the College World Series, you made much much more about Florida’s efforts than the two-year consecutive national champs. Isn’t the SC state line just as close as the FL one? There are a lot of Gamecocks around here who have had enough. Even arch rival Clemson gets more coverage. All I ask is that you be fair.

Racine Dawg…..If USC is overrated then how did they beat UGA last year and return all their skilled players. The Gators are lurking and enjoying being overlooked. I guess all you people think they don;t have any talent down there in Gatorland. They could possibly be the most improved team in conference.
Also, the Cocks were picked just 4th overall at SEC media days so that doesn’t speak too well for the Dawgs or Gators. Just remember…..the games will be played on the field…..then you can tell us who was overrated.

Richt shouldn’t even set goals at this point..win 1 game @ a time…that’s how titles are won. UF wins wins the East, SC always finds ways to choke down the stretch, TN beats UGA @ rocky top, Dream Team..you picked the wrong school. Another 6-7 season w/ a revolving door coaching staff.
