Hoover, Ala. — His program, figuratively if not literally, was headed south. “Georgia had declined in record and in how people nationally perceived our program,” Mark Richt said. “I realized that.”
That was important. Realization that you’re going wrong is the first move toward making things go right again. But such knowledge isn’t always the precursor to change. Fact is, it’s harder to recapture momentum than to build it in the first place.
“You can get it back,” said Richt, speaking before his appearance before the full body of the SEC media here Thursday. (These glitzy Media Days are like the Oscars in that there’s a pre-show for selected local and national scribes.) “There’s positive momentum around our program right now. There’s a sense of excitement. Anticipation is very high.”
He’s right. There is. Over the winter, Georgia went from being the team that couldn’t score a touchdown against Central Florida to the program that assembled a recruiting Dream Team. And here’s quarterback Aaron Murray after seeing the heralded freshmen in summer workouts: “I wasn’t sure if they were going to be that good, but they’re definitely as good as advertised. Seven or eight of them could start right now.”
For all the speculation that Richt must win big or be gone, there’s no sense, as Richt himself said, “of gloom and doom.” This team thinks it can win the SEC East. (More than a few observers, this one included, would agree.) This program has overridden the grim reality of an 8-5 season followed by 6-7 … at least for now.
Here we pause to assess reality. Tennessee won consecutive SEC championships and the 1998 BCS title; a decade later, Phillip Fulmer was pushed aside to make room for, ahem, Lane Kiffin. Florida State finished in the top five 14 seasons running but not once after 2000, which is why Bobby Bowden was jostled into retirement. Having suffered four losing seasons in five years, Penn State has since had three 11-win seasons — but that was in the Big Ten, not the SEC.
In the SEC, everything is accelerated. Terry Bowden won his first 20 games at Auburn and resigned after coaching 45 more. Tommy Tuberville, who succeeded Bowden, went undefeated in 2004 and was gone in 2008. David Cutcliffe went 10-3 at Ole Miss in 2003; the next year he got fired.
The exceptions: Bear Bryant had six-win seasons at Alabama in 1969 and 1970 but won eight of the next nine SEC titles; Vince Dooley went 5-6 in 1977 and 6-5 in 1979 but was 43-4-1 over the next four seasons. Bryant’s turnaround came when he began to recruit black players; Dooley’s came when he signed Herschel Walker.
If there’s a surge coming at Georgia, it will likewise be tied to recruiting. The Dream Team, center Ben Jones said, “was the turning point we needed. The juice is back.”
Said Richt: “The recruiting class did give us momentum, and [there was momentum] even in the class itself. So-and-so would jump on, and then so-and-so, and there was a climax at the end with Isaiah [Crowell, the Columbus tailback] and [JUCO nose tackle Jonathan] Jenkins.”
There’s another component to G-Buzz 2011, and it’s a function of Richt being bold. Opening against Boise State is a considered risk — the Bulldogs might well lose, and there’d go your buzz — that had to be taken. “That game would jolt you back into the consciousness of the college football world,” he said, and the coach is milking it as feverishly as an ambidextrous dairy farmer. (Five seconds into his opening statement to the main media body, Richt spoke the words “Boise State.”)
In Athens on Wednesday, Richt stage-managed the unveiling of the Nike-styled Pro Combat uniforms the team will sport against Boise. He pretended to throw a fit when Murray and cornerback Brandon Boykin didn’t show up — the coach even threw his notepad — only to have the two players walk into the room in full (top-secret) regalia. “There’s excitement over our uniforms,” Richt said.
If Georgia loses to Boise and then to South Carolina the next week, excitement will yield to raging speculation over how Kirby Smart will fare as the Bulldogs’ head coach in 2012. In his pre-briefing briefing, Richt was reminded by Ivan Maisel of ESPN that Sports Illustrated writer Dan Jenkins once said, “No matter how pretty a woman is, there’s somebody somewhere who’s tired of her.”
Richt laughed out loud. Then he said, “I know where you’re going with this. We’ll see how pretty we look at the end of the season.”
The guess here that they’ll look pretty darn good. The guess is that Richt will do what demonstrably great coaches have failed to do: He’ll execute a mid-course correction and take Georgia back to the top of the SEC East.

I understand the optimism from the coaches, players, and fans. It wouldn’t be fun if hope didn’t spring eternal. The problem is that Richt was saying all the same stuff last year. Every coach says it.
Plus, his Dream Team reflected a lower than average (over the last ten years) haul if you believe the rankings.

Again the the dream team crap? Over the past decade, they had 3 years where their recruiting rankings where HIGHER than this coming class. And another 3 years were of equal footing. Give me a break with this drea, team crap. Stars by a players name doesn’t translate into a great player. Most 4 and 5s are busts.

You’re right Mark.Until Bear Bryant begin recruiting black players, his program was on the downswing. Until georgia decides to do the same on their offensive line, they’ll remain on the downswing. Would someone remind Richt, McGarity and the rest, that the program no longer needs to be stuck in the 1970(s), that we’re now in the 21st century, and they need to drag their program up to speed.

Pretty good analysis, Mark. Richt’s record speaks for itself. I agree that the team has underachieved at times, but overall Richt has had a pretty good run. Your comment about a mid-course direction change is spot on. I think Richt has the personality to pull it off. Just wondering if you think Samuel being touted as #1 back is a media ploy to throw Boise State off. I like Samuel, but if he wasn’t able to be one of our 4-5 main backs last year, then I can’t help but think Crowell or Malcome are better options.

I am guessing All UGA fans are getting the betting line from Vegas on the Dawgs chances of winning the SEC East and the SEC. If you guys are buying what Richt is selling, then take a couple Hundred Dollars and put it on UGA to win the East and the SECCG. Put your money where your hopes and dreams are. It would be a great story, especially considering the impatience of today’s college football fan. But the odds are against it. I don’t have a lot of confidence in the program right now. Great coaches surround themselves with a great staff. CMR’s staff are guys promoted from within, with the exception of Grantham, who was Richt’s 3rd choice. When you compare UGA’s staff with the other top tier SEC programs, they don’t measure up.

Yeah Mark! Richt has only had UGA football on MEDIOCRITY autopilot for the past several years and now we are supposed to overlook that all because UGA has the easiest SEC schedule of any team and a moron could guide this talented team to a 9 win season. If we had a “great” coach instead of mediocrity we’d likely be in the hunt for a National Championship this year. Instead we are all talking about whether a 9 or 10 win season will save Richt’s job. He should have been fired last year and this year we’d have new blood with new ambitions than saving a coach’s job.

Todd Grantham, it’s not only no depth on offense anywhere, there is no depth anywhere on the whole damn team. There are no proven playmakers on defense, none on the d.l, none at l.b, and absolutely none at the safety positions. This for a program with the same head coach in place for the past 10 seasons. This should never be the case at UGA, especially with the same coach in place. Yet here come these kool-aid drinkers spewing about Richt and how great of a coach he is. If he and Rodney Garner had a clue on how to recruit by position of need instead of rivals 4 and 5 star players, UGA wouldn’t be in this position, but Garner only recruits guys that are ranked high on rivals, and he could care less about position depth.

I’m excited about this season. The majority of my friends have already written us off because of last year, so I think we’ll sneak up and bite a few of them on the rear end.
Is there a picture of our new uniforms?
And Mr. Bradley, if you’re in Hoover, you are a mere 20 minutes away from me. I feel like I could see you, which I could’ve. I thought about going to see UGA today but slept late.

Since 1967 and counting Bobby Dodd, GT has had about 9 or 10 football coaches.
Dodd, Fulmer, Carson, Rodgers, Curry, Ross, Lewis, O’Leary, CPJ and possible one or two others that I cannot recall. Is this a +/- 5 year tenure per coach?
With this irrefutable history of football coaches coming and going and coming and going at GT, is CPJ not entering his 4th season??
Does history not suggest that they leave about every 5 years??? GT had better win 5 or 6 this year ( GT’s average) or he is in deep T.
CPJ wants that soon to be open TARHEEL HC job anyway in his home state of North Carolina.

Hate to be the wet blanket again, but that Hype Disease is highly contagious at these annual gatherings (I could hardly believe what came out of the Ol’ Ball Coach’s mouth – he must have caught a bad case of it). Clearly de Nile isn’t just a river in Egypt is it? Most SEC coaches would be very worried if they had a team where 7 or 8 freshmen could start, and even more if they had to depend on them once the typical SEC season really gets cranking. Imagine a highly regarded recruit, now a starting freshman (let’s say a lineman just for fun) lining up against the likes of an experienced, senior Nick Farley type in a very important game, or championship. Farley’s gone, but lots more like him still lurking out there – on all teams in all positions. It’s the SEC, stupid – every player you see was a highly touted recruit once, before two or three years playing in the SEC transformed them into killers. And the uniform thing again? Should we laugh or cry at that? The black jerseys and helmets thing worked all of one time didn’t it? What actually works every day is coaches who take not once ounce of sh*t from newly minted high school prima donnas or seasoned vets, and who are breathing fire at practice, and setting the performance bar higher every day and setting rock hard rules and standards and demanding self-discipline and focus on the prize 24/7. CMR is a good man, and maybe he has changed things and will turn it all around. Dooley did. Richt could too — but not the dispassionate aloof Richt on the sidelines the last several years. And maybe Bradley and others are right that things are different with the coaches and the entire program. We’ll see. Lot’s of wishin’ and a hopin’ and a pickin’ and a prayin’ out there. This will be the last year for that if de Nile is a river that runs through Athens too.

Face it Alabama had a mediocore year last year. You underperformed. You blew a 24 point lead to Auburn. You had them beat and chocked it away. Good job for a team that just put a statue of Satan outside the stadium.

How many dream team members will play this year? What are you telling the current roster since it sounds like the staff and fans have more confidence on the incoming class than you? I have asked this of sveral UGA fans I know and they all mention Crowell, who has not played a single down, and leave everything else out. I always believe UGA has potentiol every season but has failed to prove it on the field. Don’t bother mentioning that you beat GT every year as that is a weak response in the grand scheme of things.

We expect 5 or 6 of these kids to play a lot in 2011, primarily for depth. They will not start except for maybe Nick Marshall at safety.

It’s a matter of record — and SEC lore — that Alabama’s resurgence in the 1970s was at least in part due to Bryant’s decision to recruit African-American players. The 42-21 loss Alabama sustained in 1970 against Southern Cal, in which Sam Cunningham was the dominant player, is widely regarded as a turning point in college football.

Look for Tavarres to score 3 td’s and have arecord year. Blake Sailors, the leading returning rusher with experience from last season, might get 5 yards and break his record. Malcome had 2 fumbles on G-Day, Branden Smith is a 1 man fumble machine. Carlton Thomas severe case of fumblitis. They promote Joe T., bring in Kasay, and recruit non-SEC caliber players like Dabell, Dantzler, Long and Theus. This is done with the idea of “building ‘em up” in an effort to make them competitive at this level. While all this is happening, the fools pass on James Carpenter, Chance Warmack, A,J. Hawkins. Roke Watkins, JuWuan James, Brandon Shell, Antonio Richardson, Jessaman Dunker, Brandon Greene, and now,Joe Harris. You’d have to be retarded not to see a pattern in this, not to see what’s going on. 3) I love UGA and college football — and I’m still pretty young — however once you’ve buried enough friends and loved ones the outcome of a football game or even a season doesn’t carry the same gravitas. Some would say that makes me less of a fan. I say I’m as much a fan as I ever was I’m just way more appreciative of the bigger priorities.

Regarding “Bryant’s decision to recruit African-American players”, Coach Bryant wanted to recruit African Americans back in the 60’s but unfortunately the political climate at that time with Governor George Wallace prohibited that in a big way.

Sad thing Buckeye. All your accomplishments over the last 10 years are tainted, destroyed and rendered meaningless by a cheating coach who tried to cover it up by wearing a vest.
Including your 2002 title. I guess there WAS something wrong with Clarett.
We have won 96 games and 2 SEC titles in the same time period.
OSU is left with nothing, nada, zippola.
Those are the cold hard facts and all your ripping on UGA and Richt and Crowell isn’t going to change the facts.

Just wait and see what type of product the DAWGS bring on Saturdays. If you are scheduled to play the DAWGS you had better go get back up. This team is going to make you bleed red and black in addition to breaking a few bones along the way. With the size and speed, bring it! Also, for you trolls that talk about the last 2 seasons we had J. Cox and and a frosh at QB, what would you expect? This year is going to balls out great! Everyone talks about BSU, keep in mind they got whipped with virtually the same hype several years ago and SC has more issues than you think on there team right now. Not to mention they could not win a game at the end of last season. Both of these games are home games and with the 12th man in the house they are going to lose there mind with the sound of madness. Keep on trolling maybe one day you will catch something. BTW, for all you UF fans, Mushchump has no idea how to run a program and will be learning on the job like current Prez. and that ain’t working out very well.

He’s banned from Chip’s blog because he contributes absolutely nothing expect “Anointed One II”, “Overrated”, etc, and it get’s old reading it. Tide Roll is somewhat entertaining, but he pours it on pretty thick sometimes, but he’ll throw in a meaningful post 1 out of every 12.

No, that’s not all that you can do. You could actually win the titles also. Otherwise you are just a really consistent 2nd, 3rd, or 4th best team in the conference. It all depends on expectations though. If you are ok with 9-10 win seasons and beating Tech then Richt is your guy. If you want to compete for SEC championships then you probably need to move on to someone else.

Do you actually think UGA did not try to recruit Joe Harris, Jessaman Dunker, Jujuan James, Brandon Shell and Antonio Richardson? You need to do some recruiting homework if you do.
Got two questions I have never seen you address, though you purport to be a Bama fan, and I will take your word that you are. If you are not connected enough to the Bama program to answer #1, simply say so. The second question is asking your opinion, which you never seem to mind doing about anything UGA.
1. Did Saban try to recruit Cam Newton out of JUCO? If so, was he just outrecruited by Auburn? If not, why would he pass on a chance at the “greatest college QB in history?”
2. Do you think AJ McCarron should be starting this season at Bama, or is Saban keeping a better QB on the bench in Philip Sims?

I agree with techfan’s assessment too but isn’t finding “someone else” the million dollar question? (Or perhaps $3 or $4 million dollar question). Who? Chizik aside, the last few MNC winning coaches have been hard@sses. Something Richt will never be.
@JB — the talent at USC is getting scary. They are loaded this year. I can see our defense giving them a little more trouble than we did last year but it’s tough to see our offense having any more success. Hopefully plugging the middle on D and good clock management are enough to squeak out a W.

Steve-O. the reason why Dawg fans would be “gloating” is becuase we actually care about our football team, unlike the North Avenue Trade School. That why it costs $250 to get tickets to the 1st UGA game of the season and only $4 to go to the first Tech game of the season.

I am interested to hear why this Bradley predicts UGA will win the SEC East?
Let’s put it on record Mark….what is it about this team which has ALL the UGA homers at the AJC drooling????
WR…….UGA doesn’t even know who is playing or starting.
RB……..Again UGA doesn’t even know who is playing besides the scout team LB
OL……..UGA has one talented SEC calibre player in Jones with a sorrowful surrounding cast, a couple who spent time last season on the other side of the line.
QB……Best spot on the team BUT for all the “optimism” about Murray, let’s be honest his talents were NOT enough to beat any teams with winning records. HADES, his “talent” was enough to make any difference against subpar teams like Colorado, Central Florida or MissState.
The defense is banking on JC transfers and unproductive players from last season along with that disastrous secondary?
I wonder if Mark would be tooting the horn of other schools like UT, FL, Ky or Vandy if that was the make up of their team for this season??
Not likely, of course like his delusional UGA fanbase, Bradley is predicting championships because, well, they are UGA.

So UGA will play in the SECCG wit a record of what? 10-2 and lose the rest? (-3 and win the SECCG and lose the BCS game? The Dawgs ain’t playing in the DOME for the SECCG.
