An embarrassing day for Tech, which hates embarrassment

"See this? Not any longer." (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)

"See this? Not any longer." (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)

It’s an embarrassing day for Georgia Tech, and Tech alums don’t like being embarrassed.

The Jackets have been forced to vacate the 2009 ACC title, have been placed on NCAA probation through 2015 and have been fined $100,000 — what is this, the NFL? — to boot. We can extrapolate from this that the NCAA likewise doesn’t take kindly to embarrassment.

The NCAA has found that “staff members” not only failed to contribute to an investigation but also sought to cast enough doubt on the allegations that they couldn’t be proved. In plain English, the NCAA believed Tech tried to cover up. And the NCAA hates cover-ups way worse than it hates violations.

Update: In offering Tech’s response to the NCAA’s findings, both president Bud Peterson and AD Dan Radakovich insisted there was no intent to influence anyone’s testimony to the NCAA. Indeed, Radakovich admitted it was he who had spoken to coach Paul Johnson about the NCAA’s interest in a particular student-athlete.

I’ll have more at greater length soon, but for now I leave you with this: Until today, Georgia Tech fans had great confidence their athletic department was under sound management. I’m not sure they still do. The school that prides itself on knowing how to run things managed to take a molehill of a violation and turn it into a mountain range’s worth of sanctions. Yikes.

I think Paul Johnson, Mr. Arrogant and all, has some explaining to do. He knew very well that the NCAA had made contact, and here is the key statement” with enough information as to question said players eligibility”. Paul chose winning( or trying to) over the rules. And like the rules or not, that’s not the question. For now, they are the rules. He played #8. This is the results. If you remember, Richt sat AJ for the opening game, waiting on the ruling from the NCAA. Big difference.

how is this different from what OSU did or UNC for that matter? Both tried to cover up and both flat out lied to NCAA. While the NCAA has not officially ruled on either school, I would hate to see what they have in store..or is GT made the scapegoat b/c they are irrelevant in size and fan base. you knew the NCAA would find a non cash-cow team to make an example of and sure enough they have. OSU was allowed to play their players in the remaining games even after it was well known that the players involved were getting benefits. they reinstated Cam just before the big game even though there was smoke surrounding him that can still be seen in Carolina. the NCAA are nothing but a bunch of hypocrites that want these schools to keep lining their pockets. GT didn’t bring in the $$$ that these other programs did, so lets throw everything we can at them and see if it sticks. college football is quickly becoming a monster of a joke when it used to be the greatest game around….

@ Steve

This pales in comparison to what happened at Tech. Read the above. Tech TRIED to cover this up. Nebraska reported themselves. Also, the violations were hardly enough to propel any of the programs to a decided competitive advantage. Keep trying…..Someday you just may make a point.

For those who do not wish to visit the link:

Nebraska self imposed a two-year probationary period as well as a fine because of NCAA violations pertaining to student-athletes who inadvertently received recommended course textbooks in addition to their required books. Recommended textbooks are not permissible under NCAA legislation.
Nebraska Athletic Director Tom Osborne said Tuesday that “nobody knowingly violated any rules” in regards to violations that the school recently self-reported to the NCAA.
Starting last November, NU found that a total of 238 student-athletes over a four-year span were allowed to use scholarship money to purchase “recommended” text books when only “required” are covered. Osborne said it happened due to confusion between the athletic department and the university bookstore.
“The error we made was we simply didn’t monitor the situation as we should have,” Osborne told The World-Herald.

NU also has imposed a fine of $28,000 on its athletic department.

“Essentially what we’re doing is pleading guilty to failure to monitor,” Osborne said.

Osborne used the word “embarrassing” several times during an interview in his office. It’s possible that Nebraska won’t hear back from the NCAA until at least October.

“Whether they feel we have done enough, we don’t know,” Osborne said.

When you look at the whole picture, Georgia Tech runs a very clean program, with athletes who are real students.

On the other hand, the athletic history of UGA is full of so many sordid, sleazy incidents – dating back to Vince Dooley and continuing through Mark Richt – that it’s impossible to overlook. The school has come to stand for drunkenness and lawlessness, coddling of illiterate athletes who should never have been admitted to college, and rampant cheating by coaches.

UGA has made the state a laughingstock with its reputation as one big party school with copious job opportunities for bail bondsman, and decent people are fed up with this. Get rid of the illiterate, undisciplined drunks and felons that Mark Richt recruits, and get rid of Richt too. Even with these illiterate low class morons, he can’t even win the division, much less the SEC, so what’s the point.

Self imposing, admitting, and trying to cover up…what’s the difference in how you judge the criminal? No. Now I understand we aren’t talking about a crime as serious as rape, but it’s a point I’m trying to make. NCAA took emotions into this ruling and were already in a “testy mood”. The “spill the beans” is in reference to the UNC institution coaching the kids on what to say to the NCAA per the hiring of the former NCAA investigator. I’m don’t buy that UNC was honest at all. Georgia Tech may be guilty of certain molehill infractions that are now mountains in the eyes of the NCAA, but it is amazing at what eyes the NCAA uses in specific situations involving certain specific institutions — supposed to be of higher learning and not just football factories. UGA has had more NCAA investigations and infractions that just somehow disappear because they “self-impose” sanctions and promise not to do it again — but, look at their record of “fine student-athletes who go to Georgia to get an education first and play football because they just love the sport”. What the NCAA is doing to Georgia Tech is an out-right injustice compared to what they allowed Ohio (Olieo) State to do last year by allowing Tressell to Coach and the other players to play in the Sugar Bowl game and only force them to sit out for five games of the next season (give me a break) and look what a cluster that has turned into. Now, it’s going to be Auburn’s and Oregon’s turn to “self-impose” sanctions. Whatever Georgia Tech did wrong deserves punishment, but let’s go get them all if we’re gonna vacate wins and titles — try Odell Thurman playing as an underage alcohol and drug offender and UGA winning an SEC Title — no problems from the NCAA there? And, why don’t we check into how often Knowshon Moreno attended classes during his last football season semester at UGA. How does Johnson informing the athlete that the NCAA needs to ask him questions about his dealings with Booker constitute a “cover up?” When I read the report, it looks like the NCAA was unaware until after the fact that Radakovich had informed CPJ of any of this. So if they warned Radakovich against notifying the athletes in question, then how do we know that information filtered down to CPJ.

Regardless, any way you look at this, the original inquiry was over $312 worth of clothing. Seems like the NCAA would have bigger fish to fry here.. Like Oregon, Auburn, UNC, Ohio State, LSU, etc etc.

This just further confirms why I’ve hated Radakovich all along.. Many people close to the program consider him to be nothing but a used car salesman.. And they may be right.

ATLANTA – The National College Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Committee on Infractions has found the Georgia Institute of Technology men’s basketball and football programs have committed violations of NCAA regulations.

The Institute was cited for a lack of cooperation during the investigation, a failure to meet the conditions and obligations of membership and preferential treatment violations. There were additional violations in the men’s basketball program related to rules stemming from a nonscholastic basketball tournament conducted on the Institute’s campus, which the public report further details.

“Georgia Tech is committed to the integrity of its athletics program, including full cooperation and support of the NCAA,” said Georgia Tech President G.P. “Bud” Peterson. “Given the information we had at the time, I believe we took reasonable and appropriate steps to determine the proper course of action and acted in good faith. Looking back, there are things we could have done differently. Because of our unwavering commitment to NCAA compliance, we have already taken a number of steps to address perceived shortcomings, hopefully ensuring that our programs remain beyond reproach.”

After being notified of the allegations in November 2009, Georgia Tech conducted its own internal investigation, forming a committee made up of faculty, staff and external counsel that made recommendations based on available information and the internal investigation findings.

As a result of this exhaustive review process and because of Georgia Tech’s steadfast commitment to compliance, the Institute completely revamped and enhanced its athletic compliance operation and staffing. Changes include a greater investment in experienced staff, training and awareness among staff and student athletes.

Penalties include:

• Public reprimand and censure.
• Four years of probation from July 14, 2011, through July 13, 2015. The report further details this probation.
• A $100,000 financial penalty.
• A reduction of two men’s basketball recruiting days during the 2011 summer evaluation period (self-imposed by the Institute).
• A limit to 10 official visits for men’s basketball for the 2011-12 and 2012-2013 academic years.
• A vacation of all contests won by the football team during the 2009 season after November 24, which is when the university was alerted to the potential eligibility issues.

The Institute is considering options including whether to appeal the NCAA decision.

“I want to reemphasize Georgia Tech’s unwavering commitment to compliance and our commitment to the conditions and obligations of membership of the NCAA,” said Peterson

1. Who inside GT communicated with the ‘player’ about the investigation, ie coach Johnson, or someone under him. Was it simply a miscommunication or was there intent to ‘coach’ the player’s responses to the NCAA. No one can have an informed opinion if we don’t know the details. If there was intent to ‘coach’ the player’s reponse’s this is reason for head coach to resign and YES, we are embarrassed. If it was miscommunication, then it needs to be explained and there needs to be an appeal.

Hope springs eternal in Athens but these guys are mostly delusional relative to there place in the hierarchy of top programs.

Team↓ Won↓ Lost↓ Tied↓ Pct.↓ Years↓ Total Games↓ Conference↓
Michigan 877 302 36 .736 131 1216 Big Ten
Texas 845 318 33 .720 115 1196 Big 12
Notre Dame 837 292 42 .732 119 1173 Independent
Nebraska 832 341 40 .701 118 1208 Big 12 Big Ten in 2011
Penn State 811 351 42 .691 122 1204 Big Ten
Oklahoma 802 302 53 .716 115 1157 Big 12
Ohio State 797 308 53 .717 118 1180 Big Ten
Alabama 792 308 44 .695 113 1172 SEC
Tennessee 773 327 55 .694 111 1153 SEC
USC 761 307 54 .694 115 1132 Pac 10
Georgia 732 389 54 .646 117 1175 SEC

Id say being 11th all time NCAA in wins puts us pretty much at the top of the hierarchy.

Last year was a strange year, this year may be stranger. Tech generally does not have the kind of players to cheat. I mean by the end of last year we could not find a man on the team that could field a punt. Our best backs have been transfers from other schools where they could make the grade, with the exception of Dwyer. I think the NCAA should save itself some trouble. If a team like Tech or Georiga are so bad they can’t even have a winning year and the amount of the money is less than 500 dollars save the investigators for the Auburns and Ohio States. One more thing. A lot of Johnson critics claimed Johnson won with Gailey’s talent and since Johnson has been here he doesn’t recruit the talent Gailey does. Maybe there is now a reason for that. Johnson does not need this kind of talent to win.

I have been a loyal GT fan for years. I am thoroughly disgusted with the athletic program, the way alumni are treated with regard to bowl tickets and seating is ridiculous. The very fact that they can even sell out our home stadium seats, should be a huge warning for the AD et al….I am very sorry I renewed my 30+ years of season tickets. This will be the LAST for me. My family has been loyal for years and this is the last straw. Paul Hewitt should have been fired at least 2 seasons ago. Now we have cover ups of NCAA violations. I am sick of keeping the faith as a GT fan. Georgia Tech-You have now lost a loyal family

I cannot understand grown, professional men that are making these enormous salaries would put EVERYTHING at risk by trying to cover up ANYTHING. Be transparent and let the punishment fall where it should…..on the player(s) that committed the violations. I learned as a small child that when you’re caught, it’s best to go ahead and come clean. You only make it worse by trying to hide the truth that will eventually come out. Tressel, Davis, Carroll and now someone at Tech. Idiots!

Not a lot of time to write now, but I’ve read the report, and honestly, I’m not terribly certain where the “cover up” is…

It seems Tech conducted an internal investigation and found there was not sufficient evidence to declare the players ineligible. Apparently, the NCAA disagreed in this instance. As far as the actual interviews are concerned, there seems to be a lot of conjecture and supposition, but not a lot of direct evidence or verifiable fact.

It seems clear that DRad made a mistake in the NCAAs eyes when he advised CPJ about the pending interview, but I’m not certain the NCAA has any legal authority to put a “gag” order on people. Meaning, I would assume he was within his right to inform CPJ of the interview, even if the NCAA asked him not to. That seems to be the biggest sticking point to the NCAA.

They are mad DRad talked to CPJ about the pending interview, and this is there way to punish Tech for a kid maybe/maybe not wearing $312 in clothing that he maybe/maybe not received from someone who may/may not be a friend of an agent.

This is another example of why the NCAA looks like a complete joke to average football fans like me. They need to go away.

What EXACTLY did GT try to cover up?

Mark Bradley is a UGA lover and wants to paint GT in a bad light every chance he gets………GT has traditionally run a very clean program and UGA has a very checkered past with regard to off the field incidents and NCAA investigations/infractions.

I have not read the comments on this blog and I have no intentions of doing so, but I am certain the UGA faithful will pull out the old standard anti-GT stuff (Hamilton for his DUI, Houston for selling weed to guy who turned out to have a connection with islamic terrorism and the UNFOUNDED rape allegations against Tarrant); HOWEVER, the GT family has a stellar record in comparison to the UGA family of players and ex-players!! The previous NCAA investigation at GT was completely blown out of proportion (essentially lies) by most UGA fans until most actually beleive GT tried to cheat……..the truth is that a few GT employees made some BAD decisions during the change-over from the Quarter system to the Semester system (NCAA made it clear that GT did not intentionally attempt to cheat).

ToccoaDawg

OK. I have had fun with this today, but, its time to be serious. It wasn’t the $300 worth of stuff that got them in trouble. It was the cover up. This is indeed a sad day for ALL of the state of Georgia. No way should GT have tried to cover it up. CPJ “if he knew” should be fired as should the AD at tech. I would expect this sort of action be taken at UT but not GT who says they have higher standards. Really why coverup something this simple? CMR didn’t coverup for AJ he complied with anything the ncaa wanted, that’s the difference. As for albarn, osu, oregoon and the rest, that does not come in play here. I do realize that the ncaa does come down on some harder than others but that’s a different story. The story here is GT got caught covering up a pimple and made a bad case of cancer out of it. I for one as a dawg fan does not enjoy seeing tech in this predicament. nothing would make me happier than to see UGa win the SEC, Tech win the ACC and Georgia Southern win the nation championship all in the same year.

1/who cares about the Big 10? nobody
2/who cares about Nebraska except the 12 people who live there? nobody – Funny you mention the only 12 people there. Keep in mind Nebraska leads the nation in consecutive sellouts with over 300. You can’t sell out games in Athens, let alone over 300 in a row.
3/ why does Nebraska think they are so great when they havent been worth a crap in 15 years? I dont know
4/why do Nebraska fans like to trash talk on this board? . I guess because other than shucking corn, what the hell else is there to do in Nebraska? You talk trash too….Just read your own posts.
5/ when are they going to enlarge that tiny stadium they have? it would rank in the lower half of the SEC capacity wise. 86,000 and growing with a waiting list for season tickets.
6/on second thought, maybe hold off on that stadium expansion with home games like Minnestoa and Indiana every year woooooo! Compared to Baylor, Kansas, and the first few games where they play the cream puff schools? Again, over 300 consecutive sell outs.

As a Georgia fan, I’d wish that all of us would avoid so much critism of each other for things that happen OFF the field. Criticize the administrators, maybe. But Ga. Tech is a fine school–just as Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Clemson, etc. are fine schools. Young, dumb kids do dumb things. For example, how many of you when you were 18-25 didn’t get drunk occasionally. You may have even got convicted of DUI. But because you weren’t a college football player, no one paid much attention. Understand, I believe we must follow the rules and, if we don’t, the price must be paid. But it doesn’t make Tech…or Georgia a “Thug School”.
Let’s battle on the field, not in the newspapers! Just my opinion.

This is both KARMA and “poetic justice” for the geeky-nerd-loser-douchebag segment of the GT fanbase.

When UNC Chapel lost ultiple players for getting some “Food & Drinks” at a party, the smug GT Fanbase wanted Butch Davis FIRED and called the UNC program out of control, now the GT players are the ones taking small gifts, NONE of those douchebage-weasely fans remember their comments levied at OTHER CFB Programs.

Many GT Fans love to claim how stupid the Mutt Program is, but they were “smart enough” to sit AJ Green for the first 4-games rather than try to get away with it, GT acted WORSE than both ug@ & UNC because they wnet against NCAA instructions and prepped the SA’s “testimony” in order to INTERRUPT the investigation.

DRad might be the one taking the fall, but I guarantee you that the “PE Major from W. Carolina” was the one that didn’t want to sit Star players going into the ACC-CG.

Also none the allegation involve the B-BALL Program, yet DRAD offers the B-BALL program up as sacrificial lambs for something that the FB PROGRAM did, so basically GT & DRad are still executing a COVER-UP as they try to impose “self-inflicted penalties” on themselves.

The arrogance of GT, they get dinged for a cover-up, so what do they do, THEY RESPOND WITH EVEN MORE COVER-UPS by trying to scape-goat the B-Ball program for something that the FB Program did.

Before I head out to the Yes & Styx concert at Verizon, let me just add my two cents. Basically the NCAA spent ONE YEAR investigating GT athletics and this is the most they could come up with. Nothing basically. It’s like Capone being slapped with tax evasion. Every now and then you have to take measures to remain competitive with certain other teams in the state and conference.

I applaud D-Rad’s compliance in this matter and for the self-penalties imposed and I place most of the blame on Calvin Booker.

What I want to know is why did Paul Johnson and Dan Radakovich allow the player in question to continue to participate, and why were they not forth-coming to the NCAA?

Evidently the NCAA feels they have compelling evidence to support handing down such penalties in this matter. Regardless of whether you agree of disagree with the penalties, one thing can be agreed on, the NCAA is sending a message meant for more than just Georgia Tech. Assuming the NCAA is a fair and just organization (even though their own prior actions have proven them not to be) that imposes its penalties based on the crime (rather than the school who committed the crime), programs like the University of Southern California, Ohio State University and University of Tennessee should be very worried – based on magnitude of infractions in comparison to Georgia Tech, the NCAA is very likely considering the death penalty for these programs.

Just so I’m clear..

The NCAA – which can’t get out of it’s own way half the time – says that schools must rule players ineligible on the possibility that they received illegal benefits from someone outside the purview of the athletic department?? Is that where we are?

The NCAA screwed UNC last year; Screwed UGA with the AJ Green scenario; Ohio State – ok they screwed themselves.

It’s about time for some of the players to ban together and file suit against the NCAA for profiting from their likeness – without fairly compensating them. The rules against player compensation are founded in 1950s era entertainment and sports. A class-action suit of former D1 football players and basketball players would go a long way towards getting the attention of the NCAA.

In this instance – the NCAA says – hey, your violation was small. But you really pissed us off with your lack of kow-towing to our investigators so we are going to hammer you with sanctions just so you know we are the big bully on the block. When does the Mark Cuban National Championship Invitational start??

Lest anyone think this isn’t about the NCAA trying to point out they are still relevant and can stay ahead – note how they can’t seem to get the Auburn investigation closed.

Note the idiocy of the investigation:
A source told ESPN’s Joe Schad that as part of the case, the NCAA investigated the relationship between former Georgia Tech quarterback Calvin Booker, who is alleged to have worked for a sports agent, and wide receiver Demaryius Thomas.

SO…. for those who can’t read – The NCAA decided there was a possible violation when the former suite mate (Booker) of a player (Thomas) – who was on the team and in school for 2 years with the player – gave the player $300 in clothing. But what really pissed of the NCAA – was that the coach asked another player (Burnett) who was at dinner at McDonald’s that night with aforementioned players – if he got any clothing. That’s the interference..

The bball violation – is a team manager running a youth basketball camp, passed along some notes about the better players to the coaching staff.

Are you effing kidding me??? Does the NCAA compliance committee have 4000 people working for it??

What a sad day for the Jackets – I support our team win, loose, or draw – but I must admit, that I am not proud of the events that have led to this action. Unfortunately College Athletics have become a joke in the last few years. The days of “real” college students playing sports for the love of the game are gone. We seem to value athletes more than students – maybe it is time to put a focus back on education.

I am a Tech grad of ‘73, and I don’t see where much damage will be evidenced over time because Tech is not a college, it is an institute of technology that employs people to work there doing research, not just teach there. These workers go to the campus as employees, not students. Tech is not like Georgia or Emory or GSU. The employees at Tech might not ever want to attend any sports events there because maybe they did not go to Tech, they went to some other college. If NFL agents come onto campus representing employment, they are at a place that is not really a college or university, but is an institute of employment as well. So the NCAA really has very little input there, much less any business being there with their rules that do not apply 100%. Theoretically that’s the way Tech is…not really a college. Therefore the damage will never be evident and will be forgotten for the next four years. Even the 100 thou fine will be forgotten.

The NCAA needs to figure out a way to compensate these kids for their contributions to the “Business of COllege Sports”, instead of trying to hoard it all to themselves.

For example: It’s ok for a student on a band scholarshitp to go out and play in clubs and what not, and earn extra cash, but a student athelete can’t have a job. Why is that?

Don’t say, “Oh, they’re getting a free education.”. THe scholarships are year to year, and it’s at the coach’s disposal to take it away. The typical football player spends at least 40 hours a week, probably more, on football activities during the season.

Studying game film, the playbook, weight training, practice, travel, and the game. How much studying do you really expect him to get done during the season.

The coaches tell them football is first. It’s first to the coaches, becuase they are being compensated in the millions, yet, they can’t give the kid $50 to have a night out with his friends.

Just stop it!!!!

I haven’t posted on the AJC in a while because I got tired of all the biased coverage and pathetic vitrol spewing UGA haters who live on the message boards. After seeing several stories today about gt being slammed for their lieing and cheating I was stunned. Not because of the shame that the hypocrisy and dishonesty of gt has brought to our great state, but because the AJC had never even mentioned an investigation.

How is it possible the South’s most well known newspaper fails to cover a major investigation of a college only a few miles from their offices? Can this be the same paper who consistently turns a UGA backup punter forgeting to return a library book into a week long witch hunt? Weekly we are treated to stories about misdeeds of any kid who has the slightest connection to UGA. Any recruit that UGA considered offering who picks another school is given bold headline treatment.

Somehow though an intense investigation of a corrupt and humiliating conspiracy of lies conducted by a large tech school within walking distance of the AJC’s squad of intrepid reporters doesn’t warrant even a brief mention. Are these bloggers that inept at their job or is the AJC guilty of biased yellow journalism intended to libel the University of Georgia while covering up countless crimes by the north avenue trade school?

Techies never cease to amaze me. They play in an inferior conference. They literally lose to UGA 90 percent of the time. They can’t sell out their home games to the point that UGA backers are able to buy TECH season tickets just to get a ticket to the game when it in BD stadium. They just got put on four years probation from the NCAA for a cover-up; and yet, they still come on here and try to discuss problems with the UGA football program. Folks, get the log out of your own eye.

(1) REPEAT VIOLATOR

(2) LENGTHY PERIOD OF PROBATION

(3) SUBSTANTIAL FINES

(4) VACATE FOOTBALL RECORDS

(5) AGAIN SUBJECT TO REPEAT VIOLATOR YET AGAIN NOW

(6) FOUR (4) YEARS OF PROBATION from 7/14/11 – 7/13/2015

(7) RECRUITING DAYS REDUCED BY 2 – FOOTBALL

(8) NO COMPLIMENTARY TICKETS TO 1ST BASKETBALL HOME GAME

(9) LIMIT OF ONLY 10 PERMISSIBLE OFFICIAL VISITS BOTH 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 BASKETBALL

Here is the real kicker :

(10) Vacate all games WON after November 24, 2009 and ending after the bowl game.

FUNNY Georgia tek

You LOST all those games except against Climpsum Farmers and so now there is 1990 only, because that win 2009 over Climpsum Farmers is VACATED just after South Carolina beat Climpsum and just after Georgia beat Georgia tek with said Thomas the focus of all the incomplete passes to end the game with a LOSS to UGA.

Vacate 1 win.

Yes, small penalty – because you LOST all the other games, nerds.

(11) PAUL JOHNSON cannot count the win over Climpsum Farmers in his total.

(12) No team who subsequently HIRES Paul Johnson can list the win over Climpsum or the ACC Championship, now VACATED.

Cupcake Conference anyway.

That is like saying you are the best sportswriter at the AJ-C.

(13) INFORM ALL PROSPECTS THAT GEORGIA TEK IS ON NCAA PROBATION.

(14) PUBLICIZE THE NCAA PROBATION IN FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL MEDIA GUIDES ANNUALLY.

(15) REPEAT VIOLATOR – FOR 5 YEARS FROM 14 JULY 2011 THROUGH 13 JULY 2016.

15 PENALTIES in the public report by The NCAA.

I’m not even an Auburn fan, I bleed red and black but I’m so tired of hearing my fellow fans & bloggers pile on Aubie it makes me embarrassed. I’m old enough to remember the Auburn fans being the only ones nice enough to treat me & my family with respect when we attend games there. After being endlessly harrassed by rude Florida, Bama, and LSU fans {Death Valley is the WORST!!} when we go on the road, I actually looked forward to our trip to Auburn every 2 years. What does it say about you guys when you revel so much in another school’s misfortune? I was there in Auburn this year and believe me, the better team won. Yes, things got ugly at the end but this is a grown-mans game. I played this game so I know how it feels when you lose, and it can bring out the worst in opposing fans as well. Congrats Auburn on your well-deserved NC and I hope the investigation ends soon. Nothing hurts more than watching the sport you love take black eye after black eye. If AU is found to have violated the rules, they will be punished accordingly but so far nothing has emerged linking them to the Newton case. The real bad guy was his father who thought he could cash in on his son’s talents with possibly no knowledge from Cam at all. I watched him play this year & even though his antics may have been over-the-top, he was possibly the most gifted athlete I’ve ever seen step on a field. You can’t deny talent & athletic ability and he has it in spades. Let’s focus on turning our program around and quit gloating over other teams problems!!

Hey Mark, do you want to revise your comments from last November, after Coach Fish Fry had lost to ug@?

After that LOSS you claimed that even though GT lost the Game Coach Johnson had proven him self the “smarter” of the 2 HCs when he allowed ug@ to score at the end of the Game.

Well now we find out that Coach Kung Fu Panda was faced with the exact same decision as CMR was faced with in the AJ Green jersey-scandal, and now we see that Coach Fish Fry handled Bey-Bey Thomas MUCH WORSE than the way that CMR handled AJ Green.

Now that we have more info, do you still stand by your comments that GT has the “smarter HC”?

After seeing these two local HCs faced with the exact same situation, one HC clearly screwed the pooch and one handled the situation with class and dignity.

The problem that hurts the smug, holier-than-thou segment of the GT fanbase is that the HC of the school that we think is inferior to GT acted like GT and we at GT “acted like we were ug@”.

This is one gonna sting for a while!

Thanks for nothing Coach Fish Fry!

BTW Red and Black, the NCAA investigation into Auburn is not over. Ask Chiznik how some high paid female NCAA VP put him in his place as he was trying to intimidate her. In case you missed it – … Julie Roe Lach, the N.C.A.A.’s vice president for enforcement, made a presentation to the group, which included every men’s basketball coach, football coach and athletic director in the conference. When she opened up the room for discussion, Auburn’s football coach, Gene Chizik, raised his hand first.

He peppered Roe Lach with a flurry of questions about the N.C.A.A.’s investigation into Cam Newton and why the N.C.A.A. had not publicly announced that the investigation was over. Chizik complained that the inquiry’s open-ended nature had hurt Auburn’s recruiting and he followed up at least three times, leading to a testy exchange.

“You’ll know when we’re finished,” Roe Lach told Chizik, according to several coaches who were at the meeting. “And we’re not finished.”

Auburn, Tenn., North Carolina, Ohio State had better get ready. Maybe the NCAA is finally getting tired of the two most corrupt outfits in this nation. I am talking about college football and basketball. A number of these athletes think that everyone owes them something and some of the coaches also. And I am sick and tired of hearing about paying these guys. Hell a college education is there if they want it. What is sad is that most of them don’t care if they get a degree or not. As a Georgia fan I must warn the Dawg nation about enjoying this little bit of embarrasment to much. Georgia has been walking a tightrope with the NCAA for the last year. The NCAA seems to be clamping down (we will know for sure if they ever go after Auburn and Florida for Cam Newton who was a cheater and a crook whose father demanded money for play. The way the NCAA handles these things is ridiculous. This is like GT gets a speeding ticket, but contests/denies it and gets 10 years in jail, but OSU/Auburn/UNC/USC commit murder and admit it, so they get off with a fine.

Obviously there was some shady business dealing with the NCAA investigators (which hopefully cannot be proved and gets overturned in an appeal), but the only real crime committed was getting $300 worth of clothes? Are you kidding me? You got Terrell Pryor rolling around campus in a new car every week, Cam Newton and his preacher-man daddy sitting down talking contract, and we get all of this stemming from someone getting some clothes as a gift from a friend? Come on now.

Check out Sean Bedford’s letter to the NCAA, it is ridiculous that the 100 or so players that handled things the right way get screwed out of a championship that they earned the right way. Fine Morgan Burnett, fine Demaryius Thomas, fine the institution, maybe even put them on probation but don’t punish the players who did nothing wrong.

And as always, reading the UGA fan’s high school level comments is hilarious.

GT lost the 09 Urange in a humiliating stomping at the hands of big, slow white boy farmers who go to bed at night around 9 PM. Now, if they are forfeiting their 09 games, does this mean that GT is given credit for TWO 09 URANGE BOWL LOSSES? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA

Couple these two 2009 Urange Bowl losses with GT’s humiliating 1967 Urange Bowl loss to Kansas, they have virtually no major bowl history since the 1950s. Citrus in 90? Then, it was not even mid major. Lower rung bowl it was then. Sorry.

The ACC title in 2009 meant nothing anyway, so let them keep that silly thing. No one outside of Durham or Chapel Hill or Blacksburg (VATECH was stomped by UGA in the Chic Fil A after UGA spotted them 24 points) or College Park MD consiiders the ACC title important. ESPN rates the SEC like 6th in conference power.

No, GT is drawing a blank on anything historically worthwhile in football over 55 years, beyond that 8 way tie in 90 for the NC and GT was NOT undefeated that year …………… they tied sad North Carolina.

I know that you see how such petty a violation is bringing such a harsh response from an NCAA committee that is looking for a scapegoat, because it is feeling so much heat over other investigations-much larger investigations. If the NCAA told DRad not to talk to CPJ, there is a case, and I could understand your column. But, no where have I read that the NCAA informed DRad not to talk to Johnson and for him not to talk to the student. Did Johnson tell the student not to cooperate? You don’t know any details! although, you might be right. there’s no point in arguing with idiots. (fans from either school could be the idiots in question, don’t jump down my throat.)

Crawl under a rock for awhile Jacket Nation.

While we clearly own them, I don’t have a “dog” in this fight, but nerds never win dude. I love kicking UGA because they’re always down to us, but the Little Man Syndrome is really rearing its ugly head for you guys. I’d consider cooling it on the we’re richer than you or we’re your boss yawnfest, because 80%+ of the UGA hillbillies calling you nerds didn’t even go to school there. I notice that it’s always the same mixture clowns that come to Jacksonville for their annual whipping.

This too shall pass. Good luck on beating GA this year-if Zook can do it, I’m sure Muschamp will.

LOTS of misinformation and ignorance in this posting and thread. Evidently, Mark did not take time to read any of the supporting information before rushing to blog. Because if he knew it and chose to leave it that would be more irresponsible.

I can forgive those making comments because they just want to get in their digs and have no reason to read the full report before jumping to conclusions.

1) The repeated $312 of merchandise was returned, with tags intact.
2) There was an internal investigation and the findings have been published.
3) The vacated wins are for players the NCAA thought MIGHT be ineligible. Since they found no reason afterwards to make them ineligible, it is quite odd to punish for not being conservative at the time.
4) The NCAA is mad because of *perceived* lack of cooperation in an investigation that uncovered no major violations. There have been less penalties imposed on larger programs with more severe violations and loads more evidence.

Maybe someone failed to properly suck up to the NCAA somewhere along the way. and shame on them for not knowing the rules of the NCAA game. But the rules of the NCAA game suck right now.

BTW, why can’t “The NCAA” ever have a face, a commissioner, someone to answer when it screws up? Why can’t they be taken to task for inconsistent penalties and arbitrary findings? Is there no legal recourse to challenge their ultimate authority when it affects the innocent?

Who has the power to hold the NCAA accountable?

Hey RAWDAWG….do you REALLY want to shoot off your mouth about this and risk drawing the NCAA’s attention to your lovely program down there at UGA in Athens? Now, there’s some fertile ground for the NCAA to plow!!! Real smart, buddy! In case you really are not aware of the obvious, we ARE the 2009 ACC Champions, no matter what these clowns want to say. You may not like Tech, but they certainly do not suck!

Mark, Does this mean GT can “fire” Paul Hewett from his contract “for cause” and save 6 or 7 million on his ridiculous contract? Also, I am no fan of UGA but when A J Green was suspended for four games last year for selling his own bowl shirt at the same time the school, heck any school can sell his jersey and pocket the money, I thought it was a crock. These sanctions on Tech are a joke. The punishment in no way fits the crime. Just stupid and disgusting.

Hey Mark! Stick it in your ear! It’s not an embarrassing day for Tech or Tech alums. We’re MAD! It just shows the inequities of the likes of Dennis Thomas and the NCAA and THEIR handling of this whole situation and YOUR journalism. Where’s your outrage at what looks like an NCAA organization that impetuously besmirches a fine institution like Georgia Tech over what? Because Dennis Thomas got mad at Tech because he perceived they weren’t cooperating. Last time I checked, you need real evidence of wrongdoing. There was none. Give me a break! Where is YOUR outrage toward the NCAA for doing something like this to Georgia Tech in such an arbitrary fashion, when there are REAL problems that should be investigated and corrected at so many other institutions? You lose your credibility as a journalist when you report a story in this way.

Hey DC – I realize the meeting was a month ago, but the AJC and other news organizations printed it on 7/13/11. Your point is? Because it was a month ago the NCAA is through with AU? I don’t think so. There will be more on that. Look how long it took the NCAA on Tech over $312.

Mark Bradley’s opinion, as usual, matters to who? If it isn’t as clear as a Wyoming sky that Tech has been twisting in the wind waiting for the next shoe to fall with the ncaa after the ncaa’s last farce of charges in 2005 that were way over the top. Tech had self reported what should have been only minor infractions but was slammed with a bounty of lost scholarships. Tech peeod the ncaass’s then by telling them they would never turn themselves in again. The ncaass’s then just sat and waited until something/anything came along that they could use as a “infraction”. Well here it is, a mickey mouse incident that should have gotten a couple of lines on the back page that the ncaass’s trumped up into major charges. If it isn’t obivious by now that they have Tech in their crosshairs, then just sit back and wait until they stumble on another mickey mouse in the next four years and trump it up and lo and behold you have the DEATH PENALTY. Don’t think it can happen? I didn’t think either one of these “infractions”-2005 or this current one, could have happened to the severety that it came down. I realize that these are not criminal charges and are not handled in a court of law, but it looks as though someone in the ncaa heirarchy may have targeted Tech and the only way to stop them is to take them to court for harassment or even more serious charges.
The NCAA would be a complete joke if it were not for cases like this. They allow a pass to most of the big dogs who flaunt everything in their face and come after someone like Tech for table scraps. Most of the “rules” are worse than ridiculous and should be thrown out. Whatever became of the FSU case of a couple of years ago? Swep under the table?

Mark: Have you read any responses since you offered kudos for the first one?
I realize its the weekend and you are off but you left us readers with a lot of questions that should be answered.
Minr is why did you say Drad should not have told his head coach about the investigation. If he and Dr. Pedersen had decided that Thomas should not play, would they instead of the player`s Head coach have told them.
Put yourself in CPJ`s place. If your editor did not trust or confide in you about some important issue that affected your articles how would you feel about him?
