UPDATE: Tech vacates 2009 ACC title, gets 4 years’ probation

UPDATE: Georgia Tech has to vacate its 2009 ACC championship and has been placed on probation through 2015 by the NCAA. Tech has also been fined $100,000.

First, let me emphasize that Georgia Tech folks are being very quiet about this. Nobody in any official capacity wants to speak ahead of the NCAA’s teleconference at 3 p.m. (Tech president Bud Peterson and AD Dan Radakovich will offer the Institute’s response at a 4:30 briefing.) That said …

I have attempted to sniff around. And here’s what I’ve been led to believe:

• Nobody is getting fired.

• No scholarships will be lost.

• There will be no postseason ban.

Let me also emphasize this: Tech folks are expecting a significant hit. And now you’re asking: If the significant hit doesn’t take the form of firings/scholarships/bans, what could it be?

The only things that spring to mind — and let me stress this is me speculating — are a possible forfeiture of some weight, and/or the application of the dreaded “lack of institutional control” label on the Tech athletic department. Then again, I could be way wrong. (Wouldn’t be the first time.)

Esteemed colleague Doug Roberson has written on the AJC’s Tech blog that the violations themselves aren’t believed to be major but Tech’s cooperation might have been, at least in the NCAA’s eyes, less than rigorous. (Mr. Roberson has also reported that both Demaryius Thomas and Morgan Burnett, members of the 2009 ACC championship team, have denied receiving improper benefits.)

And that’s all I know at the moment. I wish I knew more. But we’ll all get the picture very soon. Stay tuned, won’t you?

If there are no future sanctions then I can’t really say im all that worried about this. Taking away wins from years ago doesn’t really concern me.

Dawginlex, I appreciate your comments, and your right to defend your team. Carry on!
JacketonProbation, no one is comparing the individual crimes (Who does that? Is there even a right answer?) Be honest, you brought up an example of a guy who committed a crime in 2005! The other had the charges dropped. Would you like to consider all crimes committed by UGA players since 2005? You just won the frickin Fulmer Cup last year. Idiot.

How long has Beverly Hall been employed with Georgia Tech?

So which is it, I’m hearing Burnett got either a free Escalade or Rolex’s.

Either way no harm, no foul – even Spurrier said NCAA athletes should be paid for their services.

So…yeah. If there’s not any chance of having scholarships, firings or postseason bans then I’m good. Take away the past all you want. This morning around 9am this fanbase was reading how dominant our linebackers were going to be. No one wants to face Tech with a decent defense! It’s still gonna be a good enough season! Let’s get this over with and here what hardware and other stuff we need to give back and apologize for, what changes we need to make, etc, and still go watch a good season unfold!

Go Jackets! (no matter what)

If Coach Mark Richt had both Reggie Bush and Cam Newton on his team in the same year, and the public later found out both players were ineligible for the duration of that year, would the NCAA still make Georgia vacate that season’s loss to Florida?

Ol Rueb played in 2007 though, didn’t he? The point is, when Dogs get arrested it is for “emerging from an alley” on a scooter or underage drinking.
At schools like tech it’s dealing enough Mary J to light up LaGrange; at Florida, it’s stealing a dead girls Visa and using it; at Auburn it’s gang-banging some poor kid and robbing them. At least Auburn’s AD made chizik “cut” those kids. Since Auburn lost it’s amateur status, Chizik has to make cuts, rather than Saban’s medical disqualifications.
You should absolutely make distinctions between these crimes. If you don’t, you’re probably a sociopath.

Guys….

Bradley is correct, no firing, no scholarship reductions & no Bowl ban…

Unfortunately, and due to lack of cooperation from the GTAA and that the actual violation occurred prior to the 2009 Ugag game, where of the 3 games in question 2 were losses.

The NCAA’s punishment will be forfeiture of the 2009 ACC Championship game. GT will be deemed to have lost due to playing 2 ineligible players… Clemson will be awarded the win & along with it the 2009 ACC Championship… Sorry, not a vacated win, but a forfeiture of the game…..

JB, there was a great article on Sugiura’s tech blog about it…right before this news broke. I’m glad you’ll be caught off guard by it actually. I like that the whole world uses the phrase “Tech doesn’t have the right personnel for the 3-4 yet.” It means they won’t see it coming.

GT Booster, I don’t think you can be correct. Similar to USC losing its title against Oklahoma and it not being awarded to them, Clemson can’t be awarded a championship they didn’t win. At worst, it would be a vacated championship that no one won.
JacketonProbation, since you decided to continue, I will leave one last comment for you. If Reuben played in 2007, it wasn’t at GT. Someone in the NFL might have given him a chance (the Bucs maybe?). Second, I won’t defend his actions as I think it is an incredibly dumb decision. However, if you want to claim UGA athletes have only been guilty of underage drinking and not sexual assault, leaving the scene of an accident, theft, etc all within the last few years, continue living in your bubble. Enjoy. To all other UGA fans, I promise, I have nothing against you or your team. It’s ignorant fools who live in a glass house that bother me. Tech isn’t perfect, neither is UGA. Denying that fact is foolish.

So, lemme get this straight.

You’ve got essentially rogue programs like Oregon State, USC, Ohio State,
Auburn, Alabama, Miami and many others, violating WHOLE SECTIONS
of the NCAA rulebook and yet the NCAA struggles to find anything amiss.

Hell, it took the NCAA 4+ years to investigate USC, even after everyone in the
Greater Los Angeles metro area knew Reggie Bush and his family were getting
HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS in compensation.

And yet, of all the places in D-1 sports to look, Georgia Tech, with one of THE highest sets of academic standards and requirements for its athletes, SOMEHOW, finds itself under investigation by the NCAA.

UN–F******–BELIEVABLE.

I’m late to this party – what did the Jackets allegedly do? If I have the facts straight, a watch and a t – shirt seem pretty insignificant to me. If Tech gets nailed for something this trivial, then THE Ohio State University should be required to play with no players on scholarships. (Given the general level of Big 10 (12ish?) pitifulness, they would still have a shot at the “Our Turn To Lose To An SEC Team” Division!) Also, can anyone head over to Athens and give some scooter riding lessons to the guys over there?
