UPDATE: Tech vacates 2009 ACC title, gets 4 years’ probation

UPDATE: Georgia Tech has to vacate its 2009 ACC championship and has been placed on probation through 2015 by the NCAA. Tech has also been fined $100,000.

First, let me emphasize that Georgia Tech folks are being very quiet about this. Nobody in any official capacity wants to speak ahead of the NCAA’s teleconference at 3 p.m. (Tech president Bud Peterson and AD Dan Radakovich will offer the Institute’s response at a 4:30 briefing.) That said …

I have attempted to sniff around. And here’s what I’ve been led to believe:

• Nobody is getting fired.

• No scholarships will be lost.

• There will be no postseason ban.

Let me also emphasize this: Tech folks are expecting a significant hit. And now you’re asking: If the significant hit doesn’t take the form of firings/scholarships/bans, what could it be?

The only things that spring to mind — and let me stress this is me speculating — are a possible forfeiture of some weight, and/or the application of the dreaded “lack of institutional control” label on the Tech athletic department. Then again, I could be way wrong. (Wouldn’t be the first time.)

Esteemed colleague Doug Roberson has written on the AJC’s Tech blog that the violations themselves aren’t believed to be major but Tech’s cooperation might have been, at least in the NCAA’s eyes, less than rigorous. (Mr. Roberson has also reported that both Demaryius Thomas and Morgan Burnett, members of the 2009 ACC championship team, have denied receiving improper benefits.)

And that’s all I know at the moment. I wish I knew more. But we’ll all get the picture very soon. Stay tuned, won’t you?

Doesn’t sound good for the Jackets. Yet I’m sure their fans will find some way to slam the Dawgs. However, which program has been in serious trouble with the NCAA more often? Yes, it is the program on North Avenue, not in Athens.

You know your football program is a joke when you’ve lost 9 out of 10 to Mark Richt.

All I know is that Auburn better get hit bigtime by the NCAA. Even their own players from years ago said they were paid. NCAA is a joke. They don’t even know how to crown a real champion. Terrible.

not sure what to make of all this. seems to me that if there was something major going on or about to happen, it would have leaked before now. hopefully this is all minor, but with the NCAA looking to reaffirm their status as the “all mighty”, they may look to set an example here. guess we’ll all know soon…

So let me get this straight.

It seems that the NCAA is investigating all championship teams from 2009 and 2010.

Bad news for us Tech fans because UGA most definitely WILL NOT be investigated! LOL!!!!!! They haven’t sniffed a championship! No pun intended.

Yep, the mutts are out in force. How’s that running back situation working out at UGA. Better hope crowell is the real deal. UGA been in plenty of trouble in the past. Remember Harrick. I’m sure if the NCAA is investigating Tech pretty hard, it’s only a matter of time before they bring the hammer down on UGA.

Just when I left tech after being TOASTED by former Dawg Caleb King the NCAA has gotta drop the hammer on me for obtaining a free Escalade.

I will have James Harrison on this case soon and he will set all things straight!

Dam you Caleb King!

This is reportedly over Burnett and Thomas receiving a watch and shirt from an agent. I would not think that this would be a big hit for GT unless CPJ or D RAD knew and did nothing about it. Who knows though GT could be the scape goat the NCAA is looking for. Slam GT to flex the muscle as GT is not a big national powerhouse name, then slap the rest of the teams on the wrist who are.

It’s complete hypocrisy for any UGA fan to criticize Tech. UGA fans don’t seem to care about anything but football, and they don’t care if their players are enrolled in silly majors that no parents who are paying the bills would send their kids to UGA for. The very few football and basketball players who graduate have no job opportunities and end up unemployed or working in menial jobs that hardly require a college degree.

Georgia Tech is a real school with serious academic standards, and that includes scholarshipped athletes. UGA has a long history of being a drunken party school, where parents send their kids for an easy degree, even if the degree itself is worthless.

Jan Kemp exposed the obscene crap going on at UGA with athletes being enrolled in courses a ten-year-old kid could pass. That was almost three decades ago, and nothing has changed. If anything, the abuses are more blatant today. Way too many illiterate morons are being recruited, and the very high arrest rate shows clearly that Richt does not care if his players have any morals or character.

The bottom line is that most Tech fans have very good jobs and productive lives that don’t depend on Tech’s football record for their happiness in life. It would be great to beat UGA more often, but when you put scholar-athletes up against dummy-athletes, it’s usually no contest.

Remember the red panties!

The d-lineman was let back on because all that stuff was false. And having 1 bad egg (houston) in the bunch that having the entire dozen be bad (i.e. UGA), that’s not too shabby. Houston wasn’t even on the team when he got in trouble. How many UGA players have gotten into trouble once they were out of school. How about your boy Hines Ward. I guess he learned his ABC’s at UGA. Hell, how many actually make it through the program without getting in trouble with the school or the law?

If an institution is guilty of infractions then they are guilty of infractions.

The fact that it may be your team is not important. Guilty of breaking the rules is guilty of breaking the rules.

JacketonProbation, do you really want to get into a comparison of names of people who have been convicted of crimes during their time at their respective school? That would eliminate one of your examples, and believe me, there are quite a few examples from your school. Get a brain.

Guess we’ll find out around 3 today…I’m never a fan of cheating…regardless of other teams attitudes on the subject. The ncaa has proven to be erratic in it’s approach to certain teams…as a Tech fan, I felt like AJ Greene got hosed when he had to sit out all those games because of uga’s self imposed restrictions (I agree that they needed to do this, but the ncaa dragged their feet in this case) while the Ohio State players were given the chance to play out the season ONLY to leave the program before they had to sit out…in the end, though; justice reigned supreme.

I’m a tech fan, but to the person slamming UGA for being a “drunken party school where parents send their kids to get free degress.” Oh please, UGA is a good state school, a top 25 one at that in the nation. Tech stills rules academically, but people crap on UGA way too much on these blogs.
