Will tonight’s NBA draft be a snooze-fest or a Smoove-fest?

Game 6 against the Bulls: Was it Josh's last night as a Hawk? (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)

Game 6 against the Bulls: Was it his last night as a Hawk? (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)

And here we thought tonight’s NBA draft would be a snooze-fest for Hawks fans. Turns out it could become … pardon the expression … a Smoove-fest.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports that the Hawks, who currently hold only the 18th pick of the second round, are trying to trade Josh Smith to the Minnesota Timberwolves for the second pick in the draft. With this pick, Wojnarowski writes, the Hawks would take Enes Kanter, the center from Turkey who was ruled ineligible to play for Kentucky this season by the NCAA.

Smith rumors have been running rampant the past 36 hours, and it’s not clear of any of them will come to fruition ever, let alone before the draft is done. (Me, I’m skeptical. But that’s just me.) But all among us who figured we’d skip the draft because the Hawks didn’t have a Round 1 pick might want to rethink.

The Kanter deal makes some sense, at least from the Hawks’ perspective. He’d be the center, Al Horford would be the power forward and Josh Smith and his $12.5 million salary would be gone.

Again, there’s no guarantee this will happen. (Even Wojnarowski notes that the T-Wolves “haven’t been forthcoming.”)  If something does happen, it’ll happen quick. The draft commences at 7 p.m. We will, as ever, watch and report.

That would be stupid because Smoove is the best SF!!! On our roster. Sund has a bad eye for big men and Kanter is no better than Zaza. If he gets that second pick and doesnt take Derrick Williams it will be a FAIL of epic proportins! FALI of the century!

I like this. The Hawks have to make changes or they will be stuck in the middle for the forthcoming years. Get Beasley back in the deal, and the Hawks have a respectable lineup of Teague, JJ, Beasley, Horf, and Kanter. Hopefully Teague continues his growth, JJ bounces back, Beasley continues to grow/or at worst do what he did last year, Horf finally plays his natural position and thrives, and Kanter gives the Hawks a big body that they so desperately need.

If we make this trade it better be for Derrick Williams, Kanter and Kyrie are both unknown frauds just like Marvin Williams was. They looked over Derron Williams and Paul who had both put up stellar numbers for multiple years in college and picked Bogut because of size and Marvin because of potential. Kanter is Bogut without the defense which is not good at all and Kyrie is Marvin all up and down 5 star recruit that did not prove anything in college. Heck Kanter and Irving are both very similar to Marvin.

Derrick Williams is the pick. He electrifies the crowd like Josh does, has a better jumpshot and has a made up mind what he is. He says he is a SF. Josh never says what he is just jacks up jumpers. I would miss Josh blocking shots but other than that bye, but not for Kanter. Kanter does not protect the rim, thats like starting a better offensive Zaza, no way. Kanter and Kyrie will be disappointments and maybe even busts. Derrick Williams is a SUPERSTAR, he will give you 22 pts 8 rebs, next season and put people in the seats Blake Griffin style.

All that said watch we take Kanter if this happens. Sund secretly hates us Atlanta fans and showed it once giving away 2 1st round picks for Kirk Hinrich. He will show it again real soon

Josh is our ONLY defender in the post, we can’t now take a step go back. If he leave we clearly will NOT make the playoffs next year.

“Jimmer will not be worth the money. He has NO DEFENSE at all. He is a JJ Reddick. He can’t play 34 or more minutes if he can’t defend.”

Jimmer is better than JJ Redick, but he reminds me more than anything of the 2008 version of Mike Bibby right after the Hawks traded for him. I think 15 points, 5-6 dimes, 40% 3 point shooting and no defense is his most likely NBA scenario. That’s a pretty good player but not one worth trading up for.

Enes Kanter would have been a bust with the Hawks I’m glad Josh Smith wasn’t trade for him we should be able to get a better player in return for Josh Smith. The Hawks need to go after Pau Gasol.

Hawks can trade Josh Smith & Kirk Hinrich to the Lakers for Pau Gasol and Steve Blake.

I love the pick by the Hawks, everybody knows they needed a Center and to actually draft a true one that has the potential to play the actual position is a great move. We know he needs to add weight but with Horford and Smith as the current low post scorers he just needs to play defense which he can do. Couldn’t do any better with the 48th pick!

As much as I HATE the Atlanta Spirit right now, I have to give them credit: This is an AWFUL year to trade up and what they got at the spot they were picking was pretty darn good.

If this guy pans out at center, Horford can move to his natural forward spot and turn into an All-World player.

My first choice from stagnant Sund would have been DeAndre Liggins, being compared to Bruce Bowen. Not up front comparison, but down the road. After all, Josh Harrellson was taken at 45.

Benson is as good a pick as you are going to get at that stage. But do you really want to be labeled as the anti-Faried? But this is probably what sold Sund:

“Appears to be highly coachable”

No issues on the bench when he is sitting game after game.

Final word: NBA comparison: Steven Hunter.

And Chris Singleton as a Hawk? Would have been added pressure on Marvin for sure.

How in the world do you call yourselves sports reporters and you don’t know anything about Marshon Brooks? He won the AAAA State Championship for Tucker High and was the #2 scorer in the country and #1 for the Big East and just went #25 in the draft and you have no mention of him? @ Spanish Speaking Sicilian The Hawks are under bond with the City Of Atlanta for the next 26 years. So keep dreaming. The Hawks are in Atlanta until Phillips Arena is paid off. Secondly, Bradley stop it.
