Will tonight’s NBA draft be a snooze-fest or a Smoove-fest?

And here we thought tonight’s NBA draft would be a snooze-fest for Hawks fans. Turns out it could become … pardon the expression … a Smoove-fest.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports that the Hawks, who currently hold only the 18th pick of the second round, are trying to trade Josh Smith to the Minnesota Timberwolves for the second pick in the draft. With this pick, Wojnarowski writes, the Hawks would take Enes Kanter, the center from Turkey who was ruled ineligible to play for Kentucky this season by the NCAA.

Smith rumors have been running rampant the past 36 hours, and it’s not clear of any of them will come to fruition ever, let alone before the draft is done. (Me, I’m skeptical. But that’s just me.) But all among us who figured we’d skip the draft because the Hawks didn’t have a Round 1 pick might want to rethink.

The Kanter deal makes some sense, at least from the Hawks’ perspective. He’d be the center, Al Horford would be the power forward and Josh Smith and his $12.5 million salary would be gone.

Again, there’s no guarantee this will happen. (Even Wojnarowski notes that the T-Wolves “haven’t been forthcoming.”)  If something does happen, it’ll happen quick. The draft commences at 7 p.m. We will, as ever, watch and report.

don’t think we need an unproven 19 yr old.. keep josh and add another piece.. we made it to the final 8 in NBA no drastic changes needed in my opinion

That would be stupid because Smoove is the best SF!!! On our roster. Sund has a bad eye for big men and Kanter is no better than Zaza. If he gets that second pick and doesnt take Derrick Williams it will be a FAIL of epic proportins! FALI of the century!

I love the potential deal with Minny. I’m in danger of a severe letdown, though. I have allowed my hopes to be up that the deal gets done.

No, it will be a “Move-Fest”, meaning the new owners of the Hawks are going to move the team to Seattle hahahaha

I like this. The Hawks have to make changes or they will be stuck in the middle for the forthcoming years. Get Beasley back in the deal, and the Hawks have a respectable lineup of Teague, JJ, Beasley, Horf, and Kanter. Hopefully Teague continues his growth, JJ bounces back, Beasley continues to grow/or at worst do what he did last year, Horf finally plays his natural position and thrives, and Kanter gives the Hawks a big body that they so desperately need.

the hawks ownership HAD to have known about the sale weeks or even months ago, before the Thrashers sold, but needed to get that done first ad held this close to the chest

I dont care who we get back. Kanter is no Dwight howard. He’s probably not even Zaza. We will forever be known as the team that passed on Derrick Williams. When will this franchise learn?

Mark, what’s going on with the SI report that the Hawks are about to be sold? I know ASG is denying it, but does anyone really believe a word those jerks say anymore?

How about Marvin and Hinrich for the no. 2 pick from Minn? And then don’t get that Enes guy, get Derrick Williams– that guy is the superstar out of this bunch in my opinion.

And with the Hawks massive success at drafting and developing players during the Rick Sund Dynasty trading anyone other than the Hawks players that no other team will go near (Joe Johnson and Marvin Williams) would most likely be another Hawks GM-induced disaster.

But if its wasnt true, why CNNSI(a very respectfully website) still running the story. Somebody is lying and we know that ASG did lied a few times about the Thrashers situation.

The statement from the Atlanta Spirit:

“As we have stated for an extended period of time, we engaged an investment banker to assist us in looking for investors for the Atlanta Hawks and Philips Arena operating rights. We have spoken with a number of parties, but at this time, there is no deal in place, nor is there an exclusive negotiating agreement in place. We will have no further comment at this time.”

If we make this trade it better be for Derrick Williams, Kanter and Kyrie are both unknown frauds just like Marvin Williams was. They looked over Derron Williams and Paul who had both put up stellar numbers for multiple years in college and picked Bogut because of size and Marvin because of potential. Kanter is Bogut without the defense which is not good at all and Kyrie is Marvin all up and down 5 star recruit that did not prove anything in college. Heck Kanter and Irving are both very similar to Marvin.

Derrick Williams is the pick. He electrifies the crowd like Josh does, has a better jumpshot and has a made up mind what he is. He says he is a SF. Josh never says what he is just jacks up jumpers. I would miss Josh blocking shots but other than that bye, but not for Kanter. Kanter does not protect the rim, thats like starting a better offensive Zaza, no way. Kanter and Kyrie will be disappointments and maybe even busts. Derrick Williams is a SUPERSTAR, he will give you 22 pts 8 rebs, next season and put people in the seats Blake Griffin style.

All that said watch we take Kanter if this happens. Sund secretly hates us Atlanta fans and showed it once giving away 2 1st round picks for Kirk Hinrich. He will show it again real soon

Hawks cant moved until 2028, so they are in Atlanta and now that is running on CBSSports.com and CNNSI is still keep theirs up.

ASG has to go, no matter what. They need to sale the team and move on.

Whoever thinks we can get the 2nd pick in the draft for Josh Smith….well, then maybe we can trade Marvin Williams for the 3rd pick while we’re living completely in fantasyland…..and then let’s package ZaZa and Joe for the top pick and we’ll be rolling right along….

Please, people. Who would want Josh–at that price???

This organization is an embarrassing abomination–and I will never subsidize its incompetence.

Al Horford is the most overrated, undercriticized player in this town since Keith Brooking….What a joke!

Oh well, Rick Sund will prove he is nothing…again…

Not so fast, my friend! Someone, anyone at all, please be sure to kick Bruce Levenson, Gearon Sr., Gearon Jr., Steve Belkin (for good measure), and Beau Turner where it counts and really freaking hard before they slither away from the train wreck that they imposed on the Atlanta sports scene.

Actually that’s not true.

Marvin Williams was very much a known quantity when he was drafted. He was the sixth man on his college team.

Who the heck drafts a guy from the bench as the #2 overall pick? Oh…I forgot…

No way we trade Josh for some project player…like we did in drafting Marvin Williams. Josh is our most complete player when is not put in bad situations like Joe Johnson pounding the pavement with the basketball for 19-20 secs before tossing the ball to Josh to bail him out. Josh is our ONLY defender in the post, we can’t now take a step go back. If he leave we clearly will NOT make the playoffs next year.

Someone who knows the NBA trade rules, would such a trade have to be made before the pick is made, or could Minny pick Kanter then finish the trade with Atlanta later?

I’m guessing the Magic are going to make a strong move for Smith, seeing it as a way to keep Dwight Howard in Orlando. I’m not sure how they can pull it off though, unless a 3-team trade is worked out so the Hawks can get someone they really want.
