Bradley’s grid picks: Tech wins eight; UGA wins the SEC East

My personal credo. (AJC photo by Ben Gray, as doctored by Ms. Mandi Albright)

My credo. (AJC photo by Ben Gray, doctored by Mandi Albright)

Six months ago I wouldn’t have imagined this pick, but here it is: Georgia will go 10-2 and win the SEC East. And how’s that for a snappy beginning to our annual long-range look at college football?

What changed my mind about Georgia? The Dream Team. I’m not the biggest believer in recruiting rankings, but this class rekindled a fire that, after 8-5 followed by 6-7, was down to embers.

Six months ago I saw a program that had run out of ideas. (How do you not score a touchdown against Central Florida?) Today I see a team primed to seize its opportunity. The SEC East is as rickety as it has ever been: Urban Meyer is gone from Florida, Tennessee is in flux and South Carolina’s breakthrough season — the Gamecocks finally won the division — fizzled at its end.

Georgia’s schedule sets up beautifully. The Bulldogs open against a team that figures to be ranked among the nation’s top five, but the team is Boise State (meaning: less talented than Georgia) and the game is in the Georgia Dome. The next week South Carolina comes to Athens. After winning those two games, the Bulldogs will find themselves in the Top 10.

Their two losses? Even with Florida under new management, one will come against the Gators. (One Georgia loss always comes against the Gators.) The other will come against Mississippi State even though the game is in Athens. (I’m not sure the fourth-best team in the SEC West couldn’t win the East.) As for Georgia’s opponent in the SEC title game … well, keep reading.

• Georgia Tech will tighten up on offense and defense — fewer turnovers, fewer points allowed. This will enable the Jackets to go 8-4 and finish third, behind Virginia Tech and Miami, in the ACC Coastal. They’ll miss Joshua Nesbitt but  profit from a kinder schedule. They don’t play Florida State. They get North Carolina, Maryland and Clemson here, and they should win two of those. They get N.C. State, Miami, Virginia and Duke on the road, and they can win at least two of those.

• Andrew Luck, the Stanford quarterback who spurned the NFL, will win the Heisman Trophy.

• Nebraska, new to the Big Ten, will win the Big Ten (now up to 12 members). Ohio State, as you may have heard, has issues.

• With Nebraska gone and Texas in retreat, Oklahoma will tear through the Big 12 (now down to 10) and finish first in the BCS standings.

I foresee a great leap forward. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

I foresee a great leap forward. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

• As big as the Georgia-Boise game is to us around here, it will pale in comparison nationally to the other neutral-site game of Sept. 3: LSU-Oregon in Arlington, Texas. LSU 34, Oregon 31.

• Boise State won’t lose after Sept. 3, but from a national perspective it won’t matter. Boise State registers only when unbeaten.

• Auburn goes from 14-0 and the BCS title to 7-5 and fifth in the SEC West. That’s unless Russell Wilson, the baseball-playing quarterback who was released from his scholarship by N. C. State, chooses the Tigers over Wisconsin. Should that happen, bump the Tigers up to 8-4 and fourth. Wilson isn’t Cam Newton, but he’s good.

• Florida State will lose to Oklahoma in Tallahassee on Sept. 17 but will run through the ACC undefeated, beating Virginia Tech in the conference title game (now housed in Charlotte).

• Florida will beat Georgia and still finish 7-5. The Gators must play Alabama and LSU. (Georgia gets neither.) The odd Will Muschamp-Charlie Weis alliance will be in tatters by Halloween.

GT's string of losing seasons ends at one. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)

The string of losing seasons ends at one. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)

• South Carolina will go 10-2 — its other loss will be to Arkansas — and lose the division title on the head-to-head tiebreaker.

• Tennessee will finish 6-6. Its new athletic director, whoever he/she is, will not be pleased.

• Utah will win the South Division of the newly configured Pac-12. Stanford will win the North because its biggest game — Oregon on Nov. 12 — is at home. Lane Kiffin and Southern Cal will finish 7-5, if anyone still cares.

• As for the SEC West … Alabama has the better schedule, but LSU has the better team. The Tigers will lose early at Mississippi State but not again. They’ll take down Alabama, which won’t lose to anybody else, in Tuscaloosa on Nov. 5. I see LSU beating Georgia for the SEC championship and Oklahoma in the BCS title game, which will, conveniently enough, be staged in New Orleans.

• Georgia State will go 8-3. It will, however, lose 51-10 at Houston on Sept. 24. Which, when you consider the Panthers lost 63-7 at Alabama last season, will be a sign of progress.

• After the doings of this offseason — Auburn’s trees, the Fiesta Bowl follies, the fall of Jim Tressel and the weirdness at West Virginia — the games themselves will seem almost staid. Even Tech versus Georgia will be nothing special. The Bulldogs will win by two touchdowns.

Mark, I always enjoy your predictions this time of year. Va Tech is the team to beat until proven otherwise but GT matches up good with them it seems. Though I am biased towards the Jackets, I am not really sold on Al Golden yet. Here’s why. http://coachesbythenumbers.com/is-al-golden-really-rich-brooks-with-a-tie/

I knew you would pick uga. What a dumbass. They lose the best receiver in the game, their number 2 receiver durham, together accounting for about 77% of passing offense. Their best rb transfers. They lose 2 defenders to the nfl and you pick them to win. You’re an idiot bradley.
Uga wins 6-7 games and is 3rd at best in the east.

I got the Dawgs going 10-2 but losing to SC and UT and Sc winning the East.

You are going to really miss out on LSU. Not only will Oregon beat them, so will MSU and Arkansas. 9-3 and Les Miles seat is flaming.

Arkansas is going to win the west.

Get ready, because another scumbag is going to win the SEC in 2011-Petrino. Year 3 at Louisville was really good. Expect the same at pigville. They have 4 WR’s better than everyone else’s except Jeffrey at SC.

Georgia’s best (& only) chance of winning a BCS Bid in 2011 is if the Georgia Lottery makes it a grand prize in one of their lame scratch-off games and someone gives Mark Richt the lucky ticket.

Dream Team consists of 17 and 18 year old freshmen. It takes a year to realize they’re not playing against Tift County, Houston County, and Hephzibah anymore. Georgia starts off 0-2 so put that nonsense to bed right now. You nailed yet another Florida loss correctly but need to realize that the Tennessee team that lost to LSU in the last minute will gladly give the mutts some payback in Knoxville as well. 7-5 for Jawja and Richt somehow survives because of injuries and inexperienced youth. GT is about right. Anywhere from 7-5 to 9-3 because of the schedule but the losses to Miami and Clemson will prove too much to overcome. Their big upset will come over Virginia Tech on a Thursday night primetime affair in downtown Atlanta. Give me LSU in the SEC, FSU in the ACC, and Oklahoma as the national champs.

Lowcountry Bulldawg

Scary Mark, you have the same two games pegged as I do, but I am worried about that trip to Knoxville. UT has some weapons on the perimeter and the young gunslinger to get them the ball. The schedule does setup nicely for the Dawgs I have to admit.

Only issue I saw was the Stanford over Oregon. I just dont think Stanford keeps that same edge Harbough brought to the program, even though they prmomoted from within.. Also doesnt Luck lose several of his OL?

Mark, predictions are always fun as long as you’re not talking to an Alabama/Auburn fan (who would pick Alabama if they were playing God).

Predictions:
Georgia – 9 and 3 (beat UF and Tech) (upset by UT and AU, and we’ll find a way to lose another one)
Tech – 8 and 4 (their defense is truly horrible and untalented, but ACC is weak – would be 6 and 6 in the SEC)
Alabama – national champs
Heisman – Trent Richardson (has to be that kind of a year for him if Bama is going to win it all)

Smile and take a deep breath everybody. Picks are about having fun!

Spring game 11 carries for 17 yards vs SEC defense. My point is if Georgia stacking their cards on freshman very risky. My prediction you will know everything about Georgia impact of freshman new defense familiarity by middle of second quarter of Boise game. Boise will be the blue print on how to attack and defend.

I just can’t see a team coached by Les Miles, with Jefferson at QB, winning the SEC. I also, can’t really see UGA beating Boise St and South Carolina. I do think they will win one of the two though. As for GT, 8-4 would be a pretty good season in my opinion. I hope you are right on that. I also think Oregon beats LSU, and mows through the Pac-12. They will play Oklahoma for the MNC.

TechSupporter

Not bad predictions Mark. I like how optimistic you are about our teams from the state of Georgia, but I disagree with all of them succeeding. Tech will have a down year, IMHO as the transition at QB will lead to controversy over who should start, and thus, the team will lack critical leadership to pull out close games. They will make a bowl because of the more favorable schedule this year, but if they finish above .500 by more than a game I’d be surprised.

As for UGA, They will have a decent season this year, but despite the talent they’re bringing in on defense and at skill positions in the offense, the offensive line will struggle. They’ll do better than last year, but I don’t see them beating out South Carolina or Florida in the SEC East. And scheduling Boise as the first game of the year is a risky venture as well. Should be a close game, but you never know how a team will respond in the first game of the year.

Go Jackets!

Well, for the last two years I thought that Bradley under-ranked the Dawgs. I was wrong. So, i hope he is right this year. Although, I would like to see our Dawgs put it to the Gators. I am not a pessimistic about the Gators, by the way.

I don’t take the BSU game as lightly either. I hope that the players don’t. All of the “not in our house” crap in the world won’t amount to a hill of beans unless the guys come to play. BSU will come to play. You better believe it…. outmanned or not. (Georgia certainly outmanned Central FL last season).

I also think the BSU game could be a make or break for Richt. If the Dawgs fall to BSU, whether it affects SEC rankings or not, the entire conference will be asking for his resignation. Win or lose the first one, USC will be a tricky game emotionally. Better start practicing Saturday night (if you know what I mean).

Tech’s defense will be stronger this year, but UGA’s special teams is just too good and puts UGA ahead in the final minutes. No matter how down or up Tech or UGA are, this game will always be close. Tech’s only chance to win this game is the possibility that Vad Lee or one of the current QB’s fighting to start, Tevin or Synjyn, step up big time this year, and show something resembling Nesbitt’s first year in CPJ’s system.

Dawgs 10-2, I wish, but like UGA always is, “they’re a year away.” GT will NOT beat VT and go 7-5. Bama wins the National Title over OK, FSU wins ACC, Nebraska in B10, Oregon out West. Is the Big East still a FBS conference? It hurts to say, but don’t underestimate Florida, nobody is paying attention to them and Weiss can run an offense, Muschamp a defense. If he can figure out how to run a team, they can compete for the East, Urban didn’t leave a shallow talent pool.

Predicting who will do what in June is an exercise in futility. Too many story lines between here and there left to play out. About as accurate as trying to predict which Republican is going to unseat Obuma.

This is what I know. The defense will be better. Big improvement in pass rush and more athletic linebackers. If they can solve third down they’ll be fine.

Murray will be even better. Crowell will have an impact.

Somebody who is not being counted on now will step up big.

UGA looks to me to have the 3rd best defense in the league behind Bama, LSU and barely ahead of USCe. We have playmakers and speed finally. Nick Marshall, Damien Swann and Ray Drew will be starting by 4:30 on September 10. Fully expect this defense and special teams to carry the team to 10 victories this year. Our offense will struggle and IC must be patient because or Oline is in tatters. We may have true freshman playing there as well which is NOT good. UGA is decimated as of now on Oline and will struggle so be patient Dawg Fans…. we will be lucky to score 20-24/game this year.

Boy you haven’t learned anything over the past 5 years. How you have a job doing what you do with this kind of thinking is beyond me. Freshman rarely make an impact in the sec. They certainly don’t propel teams to 10 win seasons. How could you completely ignore losing Aj and Kris and Washaun. This will be laughed at in 6 months.

Wow. I am stunned. Looking at UGA’s schedule, I can understand why Mark made this prediction. But you can’t just close your eyes and say 2010 didn’t happen. It did. The D wasn’t good. And they lost their best player on offense.

Will the D be better? Maybe. Will the O be better? Probably not. The line will not be better, recieving will not be better, and the running game will be roughly the same. As much as I would like to say the Frosh is the 2nd coming of Herschel, we wont know until he actually totes the rock.

Lot of if’s in Mark’s prediction. As I like to say, if frog’s had pockets, they’d all carry handguns.

I’m more concerned about TN, because its in Knoxville. Tn may be down, but they will beat a few folks.

I do not understand the Love for MSU. I get that they are way better than historically. I get they beat us, barely, in at thier place, with thier best game, and one of our worst, us making a couple of huge mistakes to give it away. Maybe I haven’t paid attention, I haven’t, to what they have done over the offseason to dramatically improve, but Georgia has far more upside for improvement that MSU. Just seems to me that’s not the biggest game to worry about. Timing I guess could be a factor. IF IF dawgs get off to a rip-roaring start, then that game follows a pretty long road game, might be one of those deals.

I understand the UF loss prediction, although I have never been a believer that anything in the past matters in that game. With very rare exception the best team on paper wins that game. I think that will be particularly true this year.

Why do people act as if losing is the norm for Georgia? We are a traditional powerhouse. It’s a proven fact

Rabiddawgfan,

Um. No. Georgia is not a proven powerhouse. One nc in the last 50 years does not make you a powerhouse. Georgia is a good regional program but hardly a nationally elite team. They never have been a recognized elite name on the national scene except on a very rare basis here and there for a year. The 3 year run under Herschel was the only period in Georgia history where they were nationally relevant for 2 or more straight years. The nationally elite powers are names like Alabama and Florida in the SEC, Ohio State, Penn St., and Michigan in the big 10, USC in the west, OU, Texas, and Nebraska. Some of these programs are obviously down in the short term but the point is that over a 50 year time span with the exception of Florida these are the big boy names in the country. I only put Florida in there because they have been the winningest team in the nation in the past 25 years. That’s enough to put them in there. But Georgia? Good regional program but not a nationally elite name on a consistent basis.

There is no way Auburn beats UGA this year. Plus after UGA loses to Florida, a victory over Auburn will almost salvage the season.

Well – I have given up on the thought that UGA will be a consistent national elite program with our current leadership.

I will, however, enjoy the season – root for the DAWGS – and understand that it is what it is.

My hope is that UGA will catch Lightening in a Bottle – and win a National Title one year.

But as being an annual top 10 team will not happen.

Donnan left the program in better shape than what it is currently in.

This team could easily be 10-2 – but more likely 8-4 or 7-5.

Even if we go 7-5, I could see Richt getting one more year to right the ship.

Nope. John Jenkins is not the 2nd coming of Terrance Cody as he couldn’t even beat out the undersized Kwame Geathers at NT. And the dawg defense lost 4-5 starters from last year including the one defensive impact player they had- Justin Houston. This D will actually take a step back from its 40 something placed national ranking last year. And if you are banking on 3 freshman to make it a grade D then you have completely lost your mind. True freshman make big impacts but rarely. For every Eric Berry or AJ Green or Marcus Lattimore there are 20 freshman who are either redshirted or make minimal impacts. For you to expect 3 of them to become meaningful starters that can hold their own against seasoned SEC 3,4 and 5 year players is naive. Same delusional thinking that constantly leaves dawg fans disappointed every year.

Incidentally, didn’t Bradley have the dawgs going 10-2 last year also???

Auburn will play as a unit – and be clicking by mid season.

We have young talent – but a much much better coaching staff.

Will beat UGA – that will not be a problem – Georgia and their stale coach has been passed by the teams that now matter in the SEC – and Tennessee is getting ready to pass Georgia as well – if not this year – then next. Georgia is maybe a step better than Kentucky – but that’s it.

Losses for UGA in 2011 will be to Boise State, South Carolina, Mississippi State, Florida and Auburn.
Possible losses will be Ole Miss (think UGA will win) and Tennessee (50/50 game – at Knoxville).
Ga Tech will pass UGA in 2012.

Also, we will have a new starting QB for the first 4 games of the 2011 season, a new LB (Femi was kicked off) and a new starting Safety (Fred Barnes left the program after being suspended).

Hunter Long: “Hunter is his own person, not a follower”

Hunter, if you are not a lemming like the rest of them, you won’t last long at UGA.

Corey Moore: “… a lifelong dream for Corey to play at Georgia”

Well Corey, you picked the right place. UGA is where all the “dreamers” go – to wither away.

Sterling Bailey: “… he’s ready to step up and take charge”

Good deal Sterling. You can be in charge of wardrobe selection and picking out the music and dance routines for the players.

Amarlo Herrera: “Amarlo is actually a pretty good cook”

Perfect. Amarlo, you can take over the KoolAid blending from Richt’s wife. Poor woman is about to wear herself out.

Not sure what planet you live on but MSU has 16 starters returning. Their only losses last year were to national champion AU, LSU, Ark, and Bama. 3 of those opponents finished in the top 10 in the final standings and Ark finished 15th I believe. Shoot this could be a terrible year on the flats with 3 or 4 wins and the beginning of CPJ’s ending or they could over perform again and win as many as 8 or 9 games. This is always the fun part of the season. Every team’s undefeated, and no prognosticator has been proven wrong. Mark, I think you’re right on with FL beating UGA. It’s just natural law. But you’re more optimistic than I am across the board. Murray’s good, but he hasn’t proven himself yet. He may still be the kind of QB who’s better than he plays. The O-line is a huge question mark. RBs and receivers have potential, but have yet to prove it on the field. The D will be better, but also unproven, with pass defense a concern. Love the kicking game. Just hope our scores aren’t only multiples of 3. Dawgs slightly over .500 when they play Auburn, and that game will determine how the season turns out. In the end, it’s gonna be fun to watch.

UGA 8-4 at best. If you think a RB will fix your problems then fine go ahead and dream. Bama vs OU for the marbles of the Tide can take LSU at home. Ark will be a very good team as well USCe. UGA will not be the Ole Ball Coach. AU will be 6-6 or 7-5 due to new folks and a very tuff road schedule.

“…Ga will win the East because we have a better qb than SC…”
********************************************
Lordy, that’s silly. Who had the best QB in ‘07? A QB is only as good as his OL and his OC, and neither of ours are very good against good, SEC defenses. And while we don’t play LSU and Bama, we do play some defenses who gave us a rough time last season, namely, those at SC and MSU.

I see 4 losses and probably tie for 2nd in the East, and McGarity proclaiming it a “turn around year” and and adding a few years to Richt’s contract.

The one prediction that I will make is that if he stays healthy Murray is going to make some folks eat crow.

Other thoughts: The line will be fine, maybe not stellar but fine. The O will produce without Washaun and AJ. The real issue is terribly basic and obvious. Can the O produce sustained drives, keeping the D off the field, and can the D get the ball back for the O? The key is D in the SEC!

Georgia will win the SEC with 11 wins. They will lose one of their first two games but not again. Tech can 8 if the defense improves. Tech plays three weak teams, so they only have to win 4 of 9 other games to have a winning season. How’s that for being competitive?

Honestly, I’ve seen some folks say things that make sense.

Like wondering how GA can win 10 and the SEC East even after losing 90 catches, 1500+ yds, 12 tds in the passing game, 800+ yds, 11 tds in the rushing game, and its best 3 defenders. Can it be done, YES (b/c games are played on the field)! Can the dogs also go 4-8, YES (b/c games are played on the field)! Don’t think they are going 10-2, but also don’t think they’ll be 4-8 either. 9 wins would be a pretty good year for the dogs.

For my Jackets …. Commit fewer than 20 TOs (27 in 2010) in 2011, and 8 wins is a minimum with 9+ pretty much a guarantee. 3 fumbles vs. GA, and 3 vs. Air Force is THE reason they lost both of those games. There’s 8 wins. TOs and kicking game hurt them pretty bad vs. Clem, NCST, and VT. Just one of those 3 = 9 wins.

TOs are 2 things:
1. part of the game
2. momentum killers!

Minimizing TOs will always put you in a better position to … Win!

Question for anybody who is actually on here and has some football knowledge. Did Jenkins play in a 3-4 defense at JUCO?

Mark, I am going to be as optimistic as you about UGA and Tech. although I do believe by the time UGA plays UF this year, the offense will be jelling a little better together and the defense will have proved it’s worth. Both teams have some work to do to be in contention for the SEC East, but I think UGA wins, by controlling the clock.

I think Ds will consider them 1-deminsional (run) until the OL proves it can pass block well enough for AM to prove he’s got WRs to replace 90rec:1,500yd:12td. I’ll go ahead and say IC (as a TRUE Fresh) will be as good (800+yd: 11td) or better than WE, but the passing game is where the dogs will be lacking. KD was as good as he was b/c of AJ. No AJ in 2011.

Solid picks Bradley. I’d take Bama over LSU, but that’s a toss up. Hard to win at Bama. UGA in the East is a fair pick, especially with their schedule. I do think they beat Florida this year. If Tech gets to 8 wins this year, Paul Johnson needs a raise. There isn’t the talent, especially on defense and the OL, to get to 8 wins. I see a 6-6 season on the Flats. I like the Luck for Heisman pick. Safe pick, and he’s the best player. Keep an eye on Landry Jones. If OU beats FSU, they are a lock for the BCS title game. And we all know that the high ranking teams have the Heisman candidates.

I have them winning nine games. SC should win the SEC East, if they stay healthy and Garcia stays sober. I think UGA will give them a run for their money just like last year though. If the offense jells I think UF can be a win, since a lot of these players will not be mentally defeated before they even play the game.
UGA can get in a mid bowl, but do not see us in a BC bowl. Too much lack of experience to expect that. Tech. could win 8-9 games easy but I still think Va Tech and FSU are the cream of the crop in the ACC at the moment.

Good luck to Tech, I have no idea what they have over there this year, but I wish them well for all their games except that one day in November.

Bama In Atlanta

June 10th, 2011
1:28 pm

I agree that UGA will have a much better record than last year but not sure I would have them winning both opening games. I hope they do win both since I’m an SEC fan against Boise and you just can’t beat a Spurrier team too often for my satisfaction.

I think the bottom line with SC will be which Garcia shows up to play, the one against Bama last year where he completed touch passes falling backwards with his eyes closed or the Garcia against Arkansas who thought everyone on the field was his teammate so it didn’t matter who caught the ball.

Obviously the Dawgs have a talented crop of freshman coming in, some of which could make an immidiate impact. However, I think there are two main items that need to be addressed in order to compete for the SEC championship. One is making sure everyone is in top physical condition to go four quarters. It’s a combination of strength training and endurance training that will make the difference down the stretch.

The other thing being overlooked regarding coaching is the lack of adjustments made during the game, especially at halftime. Any good team can struggle during the first half but where a great coach earns his fat paycheck is the adjustments made on the battlefield. The difinition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results. I kept waiting for Bobo/Richt to make some halftime adjustments last year that could have turned around the overall win/loss but it seemed like insanity ruled.

MB, I’ll agree with your 10-2 record but I’ll switch out one of the two opening games for a loss but say that the Dawgs will win against Miss St. As much as I hate to say it, I agree that Florida will be the other loss. Ok UGA, time to prove me wrong!

Hey UGA fans – METH is illegal – quit smoking it!

YOU will then realize that Georgia football is about one step above Kentucky and Ole Miss.
Richt feel asleep at the wheel – these programs do not run themselves.
Richt got complacent and did not pay attention to changes that needed to be made.

Installing a 3/4 defense was STUPID when you did not have the correct personnel.
BOBO is a good QB coach – but he is a horrible OC and play caller.
Your OLINE always underachieves.
Your players do not develop .
Your fire your Strength/ Conditioning Caoch – and hire his assistant!?! (how stupid is that).
4th and inches on the UCF 5 – let’s kick a field goal! How stupid is that – well maybe not – Richt knew how bad your OLINE, RB’s and playcalling is – so he took the 3 points.
Way to Finish the DRILL!

Here is my concern – the Boise State Coach only accepted to play UGA because he views this as a lice audition. When he is named HC at UGA for 2012 season – he will be in trouble as your 2012 and 2013 recruiting classes are going to be medicore at best.
Alabama. Auburn, Florida, FSU, Tennessee, South Carolina get what they want – and leave the leftovers for UGA. It is happening now!

UGA has been passed by SC and Florida in the east – and Tennessee will soon do the same.
UGA would be the fighting Ole Miss for the coveted 6th spot in the SEC West.
Now take your weak lame excuse for an SEC team and join the ACC.

First , Jenkins and Geathers will both be playing as starters. Richt has already said that because Geathers has shown so much improvement that he would have to make sure UGA found a spot for him in the starting line up. Also , with McGarity guiding and the Grantham influence we will see a different Richt philosophy in that the best players , play , period. This will allow at least 6 to 8 of the Freshmen to play a lot and learn the play book by practical experience instead of repetition on the practice field. UGA will red shirt fewer freshmen this year than any in the last 10 years. UGA’s defense will be obviously faster than last year. The defense will be so much better than last year it will be very hard holding on to Grantham without a serious salary increase.

Boise State Coaches interview will go well in Atlanta.
South Carolina is very much more physical than UGA – and runs over the pups.
Mississippi State takes up where they left last year – pulling away from UGA
Tennessee – getting ready to leave UGA in teh rear view mirror.
Florida – more talent, better coached, will continue the dominance
Auburn – has all ready passed UGA by – this game will not be a problem – count on it.

Peterson to be UGA’s coach in 2012 – but recruiting will suffer as Alabama, Auburn, Florida, S Carolina, Tennessee, FSU and Clemson are cherry picking the state – and leaving UGA the left overs.

One of the things he asked was to rank the SEC’s top 6 football coaches right now.

Here’s the way that vote turned out:
Nick Saban was the easy consensus choice for top SEC coach, but after that, it’s not so clear-cut.

My real question is what happens when Murray goes out for the season? I think he’s the most overrated QB in college football after a 6-7 career start, but who’s playing the spot when he goes down? We know from the Auburn game that he squeals like a little girl when big, bad defensive line growl at him.

Bradley,
After reading this column I have come to the conclusion that you are in serious need of drug testing. The only way that UGA wins the first two game is if the other teams don’t show up. They are not playing mediocre teams. Boise State has a senior qb that doesn’t make mistakes and an underrated defense. USC is just a better team all around. (especially coaching)

I think the D will be the bright spot, UGA UGA, as long as the DBs have got the system down now, and can just play at full speed.

The best DB on the field last season as a freshman will probably be the one of the best LBs in the SEC this season. Alec Ogletree.

Absolutely no way UGA wins 10 games. 8 tops. They will be 1-1 after the first two games, I wont say which game they will lose, if I had to lean one way I say they lose to Boise and beat Spurrier.
GT wins 10 games, meets FSU in the ACCCG. CPJ brings an intangible that is hard to match in the ACC, if not the entire NCAA. Al Groh brings the same fire and determination. I had the opportunity to see the T-game, and had the pleasure of witnessing immense strides on the defensive side of the ball. I strongly believe we will have one on the top 2 defenses in the ACC this year as the core players continue to master the 3-4 defense. I believe that this will be our best defensive year both on the field and statistically in the past 30 years. We have several future stars on the defense now and many outstanding, talented players including Attaochu, Barnes, Burnett, Cross, Drummond, Johnson, Nealy, Reed, Sweeting, Walls, Watts, and Young. I strongly and truly believe that we may be the most underrated defense in the entire country.
Our offense contains two keys points of concern, the QB and OL. I will make you a promise now that Washington will not be the starter by game 3. Hopefully the OL will gel as the season commences….but I think that the strength of the A backs along with a much better year from the WR core will make that a wash. I think that by year end, the offense will hold a average of 24 pts per game and 305 yards per game on the ground.
Our best recruiting class, perhaps ever, is considered 2007, when Nesbitt, Dwyer, Morgan, Burnett, Claytor, Tallant, R. Jones and Jefferson all signed. Their recruiting scores, respectively, were 77, 81, 79,79,79,79,73 and 71. Our recruiting class from 2009 contained 17 players whose scores were over 74. Our class from 2010 contained 15 players above 74. Our class from this past recruiting effort, 2011, contain Vad Lee, scoring an 81, and 6 players with a 78 score, plus 8 more players scoring at 74 to 77. CPJ and CAG have gotten little to no respect for the past class…..and by the scores, it was our best ever!!!! I don’t understand. CPJ’s recruiting classes, efforts, and general demeanor and morale are much better than they were under Gailey, Oleary, the nut from ECU and I believe even better than Bobby Ross. I strongly believe CPJ and co. are amassing talent to stay competitive with our ACC brethren, and will go a step beyond and become a mainstay atop the Coastal Division and the ACC for years to come.
Our schedule this year gives us Western Carolina, Kansas, UNC, Maryland, Clemson, VT, and Georgia at home. We will go undefeated at home this year. This is more than a promise, this is a guarantee.. We have Middle Tennessee, NCSU, Virginia, Miami, and Duke on the road. We can win every one of those games as well.. We will destroy Miami as revenge for the prior 2 years. We will not sit back and allow VT, Miami and UNC to run roughshod through the Coastal division….we shall defeat them all. . Many people see this year as a rebuilding year for us. They are mistaken. Many critics, even those who consider CPJ’s offense to be antiquated and impractical at the BCS level, have severely underestimated our talent lever, schedule, and drive that consumes us this year. . The train for the fall football season approaches and is just over 3 months away. Be ready to hop on board and enjoy the ride….as we steamroll the critics, opponents and competition in the ACC and once again claim the conference as ours.
I hope the Dawgs enjoy Richts swan song season. It will be his last.

Mississippi State will be a tough game but because it is in Athens we could pull it off with a last second field goal. Florida players know Georgia beat them on the field last year and if Murray hadn’t panicked and started trying to force everything it would have never gotten to overtime. Our coaches wanted that game so bad they did their worst job last year as far as providing the leadership needed to keep the players focused. Florida has a lot of skilled players but unless they find a QB I think we dominate the game. Auburn would have lost at least 5 games last year if it wasn’t for Newton and because they didn’t let another QB get any playing time will be lucky to win 6 games this year. We could lose to Tenn. if we take them for granted like we seem to do at least one or two times each year which usually ends up in a loss. If we lose to Tenn it will all be on the coaches but I don’t see happening this year. CMR will show better focus this year than any in the last 4 years. Bobo will still be Bobo and I hope Grantham can keep the other teams offense off the field so Bobo’s lack of offensive coordinator skills want hurt us too much.
If Murray can’t run the Offense any better than last year with consistency then I hope Richt will play LeMay because I think we will find out LeMay is all SEC caliper and I don’t want to find that out in his Junior or Senior year. The offensive line wasn’t very good last year with the lack of S&C their biggest problem but a lot of the times the offensive line did a great job keeping pressure off of Murray but it took him so long to decide if he was going to run, pass, or hand it to a back that the play broke down. Murray has got to get faster in executing which play he is running.
That leaves the first two games which will show if our coaches have learned anything . At least 4 of our losses last year was because we got out coached and that can never happen. You will lose the close ones every time and Boise State and South Carolina will be close. The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win.

Blah Blah. Really go out there on a limb and predict UGA will lose to Florida. Everyone wants to automatically pick this game every year. Me, I think there is no way UGA loses to Florida this year and will start a run of their own. This rivalry turns over every 20 years and it’s about to now. Florida’s offense looked pretty bad during the spring game. They have spread players trying to run a pro offense. Won’t work for a couple of years. Grantham had trouble calling against spread teams last year because he had never seen it in the NFL. Now he has better players on defense that know the kind of defense he is trying to run. Also, don’t you think that Grantham and Olivadotti from being in the NFL all of those years have seen Weis’s offense enough? I believe they know how to stop that offense in their sleep.

For me the whole season boils down to the first two games. If UGA comes out of those two games 2-0, the sky is the limit. If we split them, I’m thinking 9-3. If we go 0-2, then we could be looking at 8-5.

SNUDawg2008

Without AJ there, you’re going to see a lot of double-tight sets and Orson Charles finally get some balls thrown his way down the middle to spread the defense out. OC on any LB is an advantage for UGA. Our return game and defense will keep us in a lot of games. Just imagine, Brandon Smith, Brandon Boykin, Chris Conley (Frosh) & Damian Swann (Frosh) returning punts. That’s probably the fastest returners in the SEC. Additionally, there’s a few players I would like to call everyone’s attention to: Marlon Brown – came in with a lot of hype but has yet to see the field/live up to expectations, Rontavious Wooten – fast, speedy WR and playmaker in the open field, Derrick Lott – 6′4 303 DE who made several plays during the G-Day along side Kwame Geathers (Geathers has enough pub), Jarvis Jones – more athletic than Houston and faster around the corner, played at USC as a Frosh, Caleb King – has not lived up to his 5-star billing but will be pushed for PT (maybe he finds his way), Carlton Thomas – has a case of the fumblies but should be a great change of pace back, Malcome – Boo should get 1/4 of the carries and bruise his way for at least 3-4 per carry, Abry Jones & Deangelo Tyson will move to DE giving UGA more depth at that position (Note, Jeremy Longo transferred because of the amount of DEs in front of him). This depth will keep the rush constant and fresh. Notice, I only listed two Frosh in my argument. Ray Drew, Sterling Bailey, Justin Scott-Wesley, Malcolm Mitchell and Jay Rome will push the starters to get PT, too. But this is not to say we’re “relying” on freshman. Would it be great for Crowell to come in and have a season a la Lattimore from last year?! Absolutely! This team is experienced enough to take the East (SEC? Depends on their hunger). I am tired of the talking, we’ve been doing it since 2008. Let’s seem them do it on the filed. Go Dawgs!

Kerryb

June 10th, 2011

In a pro offense you need a pro style RB along with a FB. You also need a TE and at least a few good receivers. Florida doesn’t have any of those. You also don’t need to kick your best defender off the team. Mark, I don’t see how you could pick this game for UF. Is it only because they have won the ones recently? Got to use more common sense than that.

Kerryb

I think what will be a huge advantage for UGA will be Figgins at FB. Can you imagine a LB coming up in the hole and getting smashed by a FB as big as a TE? Your predictions are little too rich for GT Mark.

Coach Kung Fu Panda loses more personnel than than any other team in the ACC, and they were only 6-7 last season, in order to go to 8-4 you have to assume that the RSs and back-ups from last years Roster will somehow be better playing in 2011 vs. a schedule of equal difficulty.

The fact is, is that Coach Fish Fry has not Recruited at a high enough level to assume that RSs & back-ups will win more games than in 2010.

GT still doesn’t have reliable WRs, and the offense loses Nesbitt & A. Allen, and in a triple-sloption Offense those losses are huge, CPJ’s first 3 yrs. he has had either Allen or Dwyer a 230-pounder with NFL-level talent, now he’s gonna have a 210-215 pounder that figures to be a “solid” CFB player but isn’t a guaranteed future NFLer, with these types of subtle drop-offs at key positions it’ll be hard for GT to improve over last yrs. 6-6.

GT’s only saving grace is that they play in the crappy acc (a conf.that doesn’t merit Capital Letters).

It’s true that Georgia Tech can’t compete with UGA’s dummies, but Tech players don’t end up pushing shopping carts or working in menial jobs like UGA players after Mark Richt dumps them when their eligibility is up.

That’s just one of those inconvenient truths for UGA alumni and fans.

You puppies and assorted other yutzs who like to pick on the ACC….why don’t you look online for any stories about the conference as a whole abusing scholarship offers and “grayshirting” players. In the past NFL draft, 15 of the first 60 players drafted were from the ACC. The SEC had 10. Look at the scandals going on around and about the SEC in general. Since 1990 8 of the SEC schools have been punished for MAJOR violations. Since we are allowed to go back a few years, in the past four years the ACC is the only conference to beat the SEC in head to head competition during a season. As far as ranked teams, the ACC has proudly stood on its own two feet. Last year the ACC was 4-5 vs. the SEC. The SEC’s overall winning percentage vs. the ACC is .532. Not at all overwhelming. So quit acting like you are head and shoulders better than everyone else. You are not. This year, the ACC will go 4-1 vs. the SEC. Clemson will beat Auburn. FSU will beat Florida. GT will beat Georgia. Wake will beat Vandy. Clemson will come close, but lose to USC. Wow, yeah, the SEC surrrrre is soooooo impressive.

“Mark Richt, Georgia

Last season, I put Richt on the Hot Seat and Georgia fans let me hear it. However, the Bulldogs struggled, finishing with a losing record (6-7) for the first time in 14 years. Top it off with an embarrassing loss to UCF in the Liberty Bowl and the heat was turned up a few notches on the 51-year-old. In the offseason, new athletic director Greg McGarity relieved Richt of some of his administrative duties hoping to free him up to focus more on the football team. Since going 11-2 in 2007, the team has been on a decline finishing 10-3, 8-5, and 6-7. Off the field troubles including several high-profile arrests didn’t help. This offseason, Richt has managed to pull in a top ten recruiting class as well as develop quarterback Aaron Murray.”

• Georgia will go 9-3 but will finish third in the SEC East. Todd Grantham represents an upgrade. Given time, Aaron Murray will represent an upgrade. Thing is, the Bulldogs’ second game is in Columbia, and that seems a bridge too far. (More precisely, a bridge too soon.) The guess is that Georgia will be rolling come November, but that Sept. 11 loss — and one the next week against Arkansas in Athens — will keep the Bulldogs from a true breakthrough.

That was your prediction last year. As we know, they only managed 6 wins and none against a winning team. I suspect UGA will win 8 this year and that will not get them to Atlanta in December. Too many question marks even though the schedule is easier than last year.

That being said, I don’t expect my Gators to be much better. However, one of our 8 wins will come against the Dawgs!!!

You must be on crack to pick UGA to win the SEC WEAK East! It is down but my money says BOISE ST and USC both beat UGA and they will lose at least 2 more games during SEC play. UGA could easily also lose to GT. That could spell 5 losses in my book.

Boise came across and beat VT in their back yard last year so playing in the Georgia dome will not be an issue for them at all. Have they not proved they can go on the road and beat good football teams? What makes you think UGA has so much more talent anyway? Boise has a coach who could coach circles around CMR. The kiss of death for UGA has spoken! SEC champs….what a joke!!! You give the fan base plenty to play up to mark but if the fans have any common sense then they buy into your goofy predictions! Simpleton………..CPJ’s inabiity to attract top offensive HS players is directly related to the type of offense he runs, i.e., what top notch player would waste his talents playing an offense that is completely unmarketable to the NFL. Quite frankly, unless a kid wants an engineering degree, I have no idea why anyone would want to spend 4 years at tech – an ugly campus with crime all around and a relatively crappy athletic program.

All I can guess is the Boise State is a hell of a lot better than UCF.
So somebody should get off their arses and get busy coaching, working out, figuring out game plans, and getting a hell of a lot better than we were at the end of last year. Can they do THAT much over a summer break? It only took one summer to go from 8-5 to 6-7. So maybe somebody can remember how to win.

Boise will come out and score 7 first, then UGA 3…maybe 14-6 at the half. 3rd qtr, uga pust up 14, Boise 7, now 17-14. 4th UGA scores 14 more Boise maybe 7 . 31-21. UGA or if Boise is dumb and tries to run the ball..could be 28-10 in a UGA victory. Boise has a great line on both sides, and a great passing game. but grind it out against the size and strength that UGA has on D and you will see some tired Boise line men by the half. Add the crowd noise, the special teams of UGA and I see no way UGA loses this game. USC will always be the same game, close, was close for last few yeasr and will come down to one position just like last year. never can tell, but given that UGA hasn’t lost 2 straight to the Chickens in the past decade its just like UGA vs UF don’t beat on the chickens against UGA…and if you don’t buy into that Gator fans then what makes you think UGA will lose to UF thsi year??!!!

Well, I prefer to be a guy that says the glass is half full, and since I really do believe that we’re gonna whip Florida this year, and no damn way Miss State is gonna beat us again, then I say we win ‘em all, and then whip either LSU or Alabama in the SEC, then play whoever in New Orleans…why not? I mean so long as we’re just ’spit-ballin’ then you might as well go for broke…or as a ‘lawyered-up’ Auburn puts it, ‘Go All In’.

By the way, Boise ‘beat’ Va Tech and Oregon on flukes and never had to play anybody else again – unless you count Nevada. I ain’t worried about those guys…and South Carolina hasn’t beaten Georgia two years in a row since ever and it won’t start this year.

Simple techster,
ACC will go 4 and 1 against the SEC?

You obviously are forgetting about that SEC speed, which no other player in any other conference has.

The 4 games you count as victories? Everybody knows that if the SEC team shows up, they will win each of those games by 50. If they lose, it will only be because they weren’t motivated, or possibly because of the refs.

As for the draft, I’m pretty sure you are wrong about that too. 150 of the first 10 players taken in the draft were from the SEC. NFL teams all drool over that SEC speed, which no other player in any other conference has.

• Georgia loses to Boise, SC, Fla and two other random SEC teams = 7-5 (at least they won’t have to go to Shreveport)
• Ga Tech 2-6 in the ACC and yet another loss to UGA = 5-7 (more proof that 2009 was a fluke. B’bye Paul)
• Andrew Luck will be good not great. Will NOT win the Heisman Trophy.
• Nebraska, new to the Big Ten, will win the Big Ten = agreed
• Oklahoma will tear through the Big 12 and finish first in the BCS standings = agreed, let me add that they will lose in the BCSCG.
• Boise has a two game season (UGA, TCU) and a 10 game exhibition season. Even if they are undefeated, they will not play in the BCSCG.
• Auburn goes from 14-0 to 7-5 = agreed
• Florida State will lose to Oklahoma in Tallahassee on Sept. 17 but will run through the ACC undefeated, beating Virginia Tech in the conference title game = agreed
• Florida will beat Georgia and still finish 7-5 = agreed
• SC beats UGA but loses games they shouldn’t like Auburn or Vandy. Also lose at MSU, at Ark and Fla.
• Tennessee will finish 6-6 = agreed
• Pac 10? Who cares? Only the Stanford loving salivating press.
• SEC West: winner of the Alabama-LSU game
• Georgia State will go 8-3 = who knows?

More predictions:
• The Auburn’s trees will not die.
• Losing most of his good players to the NFL & graduation, Spurrier will retire leaving SC with a bare cupboard.
• Crowell will be injured by Week 5.
• UGA fans will make more excuses – still defending St. Mark.
• Nobody will even notice Ga Tech has a team.

A Passing team needs time to get timing real good, but a Running team just has a slight advantage. We ALL know BOBO don’t know about the RUN. I say Boise St wins 28 or 31 to UGA’s 17 or 21. Both teams could have issues with the Pass early in the game, but I wouldn’t bet on MURRAY’S passing to come from behind anywhere late in the 3rd or 4th qtr.

It doesn’t matter if a D-lineman is 360 pounds, or even one of those Easter Island stone monuments, a 2805 pound offensive lineman with enough kinetic energy to produce greater force is going to flatten a monolith every time.

Boise belongs in this game. They have only been proving that the past 5+ seasons (regular & bowl). Just ask Oregon, OU, TCU, Utah, VaTech, et al.

I have a feeling GA may win too, but it dam* sure won’t be by 40. But then I also keep picturing BSU in a “neutral site” game in D.C. vs VaTech to open the 2010 season.

Delbert,

Since we are going to be using simple physics here, how about, “for every action there is an opposite and equal reaction”. If you think those big boys don’t generate some speed off the ball, perhaps you might want to see if the coaches might let you teach the proper way to get to the ball carrier. I am sure they would welcome the chance to have another person besides their own team mates to knock around.
If a tractor trailer and a passenger car are both headed at the same speed towards each other, what driver of the two vehicles has the better chance of survival when they collide? Which vehicle after impact pushes the other one back? a 360 pound man coming off the ball, will usually handle a much smaller man, say like 285 LBS. If not every team would go for the small DT, NG and DE.

Delbert D.

June 10th, 2011

It Ain’t Rocket Science – Of course that is true; you are right on. The key point is greater force. If the big guys can accelerate faster than the smaller guys, or compensate with their greater mass to offset the accerationacceleration, they will knock them back. However, they are not equally-sized pool balls. We have to take into consideration leverage due to positioning, as well as resistance….how well they can hold their ground on a push, rather than a collision.

Back in the day, I’d take Herschel Walker with his Olympic speed and acceleration over a 222 pound linebacker, that is, unless the LB has some Judo moves.

Thanks for the comment.

Anyone who thinks Boise has more talent than UGA needs to go to their web site and read the O line depth chart – we will eat their QB for lunch (Gathers and Jenkins will rock) and spit his bones on the 50 yard line. The D will be vastly improved this year. The offense will have to step up…….especially the O line. I think the strength and conditioning was a major problem last year and previous years. I think Coach T will have them strong and mean. I am not counting on the freshmen too much – a couple may contribute but we have a good number of 2nd year players that I think are ready to make their names known. No worries for the Dawgs – they will have a solid year and with a few breaks may have a great year. Our special teams will be good and solid – Defense much better and talented – I think CMR will have some surprises on offense this year – he has a few players that may play both ways like Branden Smith that may be used to expand the offensive schemes. I am optimistic. We lost AJ but so what – I always felt he was under utilized for such a talent. We have good receivers that should be strong enough and experienced enough to get the job done. The main thing the Dawgs have going for them? They are sick and tired of being bad mouthed after last year….watch out. And as for Auburn – what? you have one good year and all of a sudden you’re an elite SEC program? Duh. If I were an Auburn fan I would take notice of Ohio State – yep, the NCAA will be heading down south after they shut down “The U”

The SEC is a great league but they get MORE credit that they deserve. I.E. UGA beating Hawaii and being the Pre-Season #1. I would still love to see the SEC play Michigan, Ohio St, and Wisconsin at their place in October to November. Winter Teams playing in Hotter Climate bowl games would see the same results if the locations were reversed.

Mark, superb. To think that far ahead takes some thinking. I see the dogs at 8-4 or 9-3 at best. The line play on both sides is the biggest question mark. If it goes well they could do very well, if not, oh well. But inevitably the DAWGS will likely prevail against the Beeees.

I’m a big Georgia fan, but I don’t think Richt is a good enough coach for us to win 10 games next season. Maybe he’ll prove me wrong. I think Boise is a lot better than our fans give them credit for and their only big losses from last season are their top 2 receivers. Their running game is still very solid. We have a chance to beat Florida, but we have choked plenty of times, so I wouldn’t put it past us to have another 4 turnovers. I think we will beat South Carolina in a close game.

I think I would be happy with Tech going eight and four after last year being so disappointing. I think there offense will again be hot and cold like last year and struggle some. I think there defense will take a step forward and be a top defense and can possible bell out the offense some as they did the first part of Johnson’s first season at TECH.
10 and 2 is a little bright for UGA. I think Murray will again be awesome at QB, but I think they will again have some struggles with players getting in trouble and injuries. I still think UGA has some motivation problems too. I think the dream team is nothing more than hype. Sure this was a top 10 recruiting class. What seperates this top ten recruiting class from the last 10 years? UGA always recruits well. The dream team will be used by opposing coaches for the next four years as a pregame speech. In other words: the dream team will work against them like a target on there head. Georgia under CMR is becoming the Clemson of the SEC. Great recruiting, Great hype, Great expections, but at the end of the season we are left wondering what went wrong?
I think Tech and UGA will again be banged up and maybe even struggling a bit by the time they play. Due to the history it is easy for me to pick UGA in that game. Whoever I don’t see much seperation.

This 2011 edition of the University of Georgia BULLDOGS quite possibly could be the year we win the BCS National Championship !……….Yea, Yea, Yea…….I could tell you all how we are going to get er done, but the bottom line is this : Though the “Dream Team” for the most part will be on the sidelines, the emotion, spirit, competition, and most importantanly……..The Chemistry that this group of young pups are going to bring to Coach Mark Richt’s team will be overwhelming………Granthams defense is already geared up to rip heads off come September……….and frankly I could care less what folks say about our Oline……..we have a butt-load of talented linemen ready to step-up and play some ball………..Don’t forget Austin Long and Brent Benedict…….they will be ready for Summer practice, and either one or both are capable of being freshman All-Americans………….Yup, BULLDOG NATION this could quite possibly be our year !……….Just remember what our record was in 1979……..then what happened in 1980…….seems a real possibility to me………….Regards, RED

Just me,

I think Pollack was a linebacker wasn’t he. How many times did he line up on the ball across from an opposing center or tackle? A 360 pound linebacker might be at a disadvantage now don’t you think? When he had to encounter a lineman, that guy had already hit his initial block or had been faked out, or schemed out, so he was not specifically targeting a line backer in most cases. Even if he was a pulling guard, Pollack worked the middle so his job was to get behind the block, not take it straight on.

Alabama: I see Alabama going 11-1, with a slight possibility to go 12-0 if they can beat LSU Nov 5th. I don’t see that happening so a great year, but second in the West.
Arkansas: 9-3 with losses to Bama, LSU and most likely the 3rd will come at the hands of South Carolina, not a given win for the Gamecocks; Fayetteville is hostile. Not a favorable schedule for the Hogs as the have potential for losses against Texas A&M and Auburn, but have given Arkansas the nod in those games because they play at home. So 7-5 to 10-2, but like 9-3.
Auburn Tigers: 7-5. Think the schedule and key losses will strike harder than most people think. Losses come at the hands of South Carolina, Arkansas, LSU, UGA and Bama. I give them a shot in the Carolina and Arkansas games, and maybe another loss at Mississippi State. So while 9-3 to 6-6 is not out of the picture…go with 7-5
LSU: I see LSU as the Champions of the West Division. Good possibility to go 12-0, possible hiccups against Oregon (but it is in Death Valley) and on the road at Bama. I don’t see them losing both of those games, maybe one…but the schedule and the open week before Bama make me think that if there is a stumble it will be week 1. 11-1 potential, but a strong 12-0.
Mississippi State: Auburn, LSU, UGA S. Carolina, Alabama and Arkansas all point to a 6-6 record for the Western Division Bulldogs. 9-3 is about the best fans can hope for.
Ole Miss: Getting better but not ready to challenge the elite of the west. Like their state partners I see 6-6.
Florida: What will Will’s first season in the swamp look like? About like a swamp. Murky, cloudy and somehow still picturesque. I am going to go with 8-4. Losses to Bama and LSU are almost locks and I am going out on a limb and picking UGA and S. Carolina to push the Gators into 3rd in the East. I see two predicted wins that should a crucial fumble or missed field goal could be losses: Auburn and FSU and I see Florida beating UGA and Carolina should the pigskin bounce a certain way. So while 10-2 and 6-6 are all possible for the Dawg turned Gator, I think he will have to settle with a 8-4 record and eating crow on his promise to Florida faithful in Georgia.
UGA: Go ahead a scream HOMER here. Yes I am a DAWG fan, but I am optimistic about the football year. From Fulhum Cup Camps to zero arrests. Yes they did loose AJ to the draft as well as some other quality players, but I see the departure of Ealey as a benefit. First two games will set the tempo for the rest of the season and for what looks like a nice schedule to follow. I am not only picking UGA to win those two, but stand a good chance of joining LSU in Atlanta on December 3rd as one of the top 2 teams in the nation at 12-0. Yes UGA can run the table this year but 9-3 is also just as likely if they stumble in Atlanta against Boise. But I see them as a likely 11-1 maybe 12-0 SEC East Champ, have to find a way to break the Florida curse.
Kentucky: A down year for the wildcats. I see them ending the year at 5-7. And only winning 1 game in the SEC. Losses at the hands of Florida, LSU and Carolina in three straight weeks will break down the morale of the team and give in to further losses to Miss. St, Ole Miss, Georgia and Tennessee
South Carolina: Hope the Visor enjoyed the East crown for the past year…it gets taken off the second week of the season when the Gamecocks come into Athens. And for Carolina fans that is a shame because the rest of the season looks fairly good. I am going to say that 10-2, 9-3 are the likely end results, but 11-1 as well as 7-5 are options as well as they could stumble against Auburn, Miss. St, Arkansas and Florida.
Tennessee: Derek gets to enjoy the efforts of Kiffin again this year. All the adverse media, all the scandals and still worry about playing football. Straight to a .500 record at 6-6. Losses at Florida, Bama and Arkansas will be coupled with home losses to UGA, LSA and Carolina.
Vanderbilt: They provide some great doctors. Not a bad year for the Harvard of the South, but not a great one in terms of SEC play. I see Vandy beating Elon, UConn, Army (though a stumble could make this one a L) and Wake. And for a school that doesn’t have an athletic department should a 0-8 record in the SEC surprise anyone? 4-8 for the Commodores out of Nashville.
And just to show that I am not a complete HOMER, LSU beats UGA in Atlanta on 3 December and goes on to make it 6 straight BCS Championships for the SEC by beating Oklahoma in New Orleans.

It’s enough that country preachers try their hands at prophecy; now sports writers are taking a stab at it. It’s best to not prognosticate at all, but if one must, they should at least wait until the season is underway by at least a couple of games. One would enjoy far greater credibility if reasonable rational were given for these predictions. It would be just a foolhardy to dismiss this forcast except for the mere possiblity that it could, in fact, happen exactly this way. Or it could be completely wrong and UGA could win the BCS title or …..go completely bust and implode with an even worse record than last year. Neither history nor statistics seem to help with this matter. I hope UGA enjoys a much improved season. The season itself will reveal this year’s team. As a matter of experience, UGA’s season is not likely to go exactly as Mark has predicted. I would bet a pocketful of rocks that something else happens. But, for the sake of a little fun, this prediction does stir the summer boredom of UGA fans. Let’s hope most of it is true.

Predictions are like….well, you know. But this is supposed to be fun. Everybody needs to lighten up.

The 10-2 prediction seems about right for a number of reasons. Richt seems to have his fire back, and Grantham finally has the right personnel to run the 3-4 the way it was designed. Defensive line play for the Dawgs will be outstanding this season, and the LBs will be the best crew in the SEC (Ogletree and Jarvis Jones both will bring the wood in unprecedented fashion, and Marcus Washington has freakish raw skills that could be game-changing if utilized properly–with Ray Drew waiting in the wings if Washington doesn’t play up to potential). The corners will be solid; biggest question mark in my mind is free safety, but we might see a freshman or two come in to get some PT there–including one supremely talented QB from South Georgia. The defense will be an asset, not a liability, this season, which historically has been a hallmark of Richt’s best teams.

On offense, Georgia has the best returning QB in the SEC, who will be the best QB in the SEC overall by the end of the season. Richt’s teams have always won 10+ games when the starting QB returns. That’s 100% of the time. Murray’s biggest asset will be his decision-making, which will allow the offense to run like it is supposed to. Crowell brings breakaway speed to the TB position that Georgia has not had since Garrison Hearst, Malcolm is a power back that will be thunder to Crowell’s lightning, and both will be better than either Caleb or Ealey were last season. Caleb King, realizing that this season is now-or-never time for him, will play like a house afire this season, giving the Dawgs a stout three-man rotation in the backfield that will rival Alabama’s. That’s why Ealey left. He saw the handwriting on the wall–the fourth RB in the rotation would only average 5-6 carries a game. The Dawgs will miss AJ at WR (who wouldn’t?), but will be fine with Tavarres King, the unsung Michael Bennett (who will surprise many) and the entire TE rotation, which will be deep and talented. Look for double tights with one splitting out in motion some this season. I also expect one of the freshmen to step up and get significant PT at WR. My bet’s on Malcolm Mitchell, who was mighty impressive on film. The weakest link on offense is the OL, which has talent but lacks depth.

The Dream Team has brought more than talent to Athens. It’s more about swagger, and about leadership, and about a sense of the team being more important than the individual. These attributes were things that were lost over the last three seasons. The fact that malcontents like Marcus Dowtin and Washaun Ealey left the program will only help the team to focus on what is truly important–playing high-quality football. The biggest change this season will not be in personnel or in technique but in attitude. This team wants to win. It will open on a national stage with a chip on its shoulder against a team with lesser talent (and yes, folks, this is correct–Boise State is extremely well-coached, but the talent level is not even close). The Dawgs get their most talented opponent (South Carolina) the following week in their home opener. Win that game and they win the East, which is vastly inferior to the SEC West at this point–and MSU, which plays Georgia in Athens, is the strongest SEC West team the Dawgs face this year. They will finish fourth in the West, behind Alabama, LSU and Arkansas, if that gives you any indication of how favorable the Georgia schedule is this season.

I agree with MB that the Florida monkey is a tough one for the Dawgs to shake, but the Dawgs typically do well against the Gators with a bye week the week before–and that happens this season. With Florida learning a whole new offense and defense, look for them to take a step back this season. I think the Dawgs win in Jax.

Tech will see modest improvement to 7-5, but the talent deficit on the Flats will become readily apparent this season as many talented players just don’t want to play in CPJ’s system. He’s a great bench coach, but a poor recruiter, and while his offense will do its usual thing (they’ll lead the ACC in rushing once again), the lack of a game-breaking receiver and the sheer dearth of talent on defense will keep the Jackets from keeping things close against the Dawgs this season. Johnson beat a more talented but less focused Georgia team with Chan Gailey’s players in his first year. Those players are gone now, and Richt will make it three in a row over the Jackets this fall. It won’t be pretty. The Georgia defense will finally be ready to put the Tech offense to bed in the trenches.

I agree with MB: Georgia will probably play LSU for the SEC title this year, likely with a 10-2 or 11-1 record. But by that time, barring injuries, the Dawgs may have the talent to play with the Tigers. Things might get interesting on that first weekend in December if everyone stays healthy….

I want get in an argument with the Florida fans about last years game but it was my observation that for the first time in years Florida didn’t beat Georgia on the field or out coach Georgia even though Bobo did his best to continue that fact. What beat Georgia last year was Murray made mistakes in the Florida game that he didn’t do in any of the games except the UCF game. Murray obviously has a problem staying focused against teams from his home state. Murray wants to prove he didn’t make a mistake going out of state to college but so far has only proved that he can’t lead an emotional game. If he shows the same lack of leadership ability I hope CMR will give LeMay an opportunity to see if he can get the job done when the pressure is on.
Florida using 3 Quarterbacks effectively taking advantage of the defense learning the 3-4 kept the game close but a critical fumble and Murray trying to force passes that he had not done all year lost the game.

A little too optimistic on UGA, Bradley. 7-5 or 8-4 is more realistic. If 7-5, Richt will be gone after a gut-wrenching decision by Adams and whats-his-name, the AD. 8-4 and they will probably find some flimsy excuse to let him and Bozo hang around. Why they would though is a damn good question.

They have an easy schedule and a ton of resources. But they won’t do it. They will continue to under perform until we have a coaching change in Athens. I like Mark Richt and think he’s a very classy guy. But he’s a sub par coach, especially in the SEC. I’ll be watching of course, but it’s hard for me to get excited about 2011.

I think “FanSince59″ has it exactly right. Love the Dawgs but we settle for mediocrity too much. Richt had some good seasons a long time ago. With the resources that he has available in Athens, and being able to be the best positioned recruiting school in a state that is one of the top 4 producers of football players, we should be in a dead heat with Florida for winning the SEC East just about every year. Instead, we just automatically concede we’ll lose to them every year and struggle against teams we should easily beat. Dawgs get virtually six automatic wins every year. 2 AA teams, 2 non-conference teams, Vandy and Kentucky. Only thing is, we’ve fallen to a level where we struggle with the non-conference games and Vandy and Kentucky. On top of that, Richt’s record against the better SEC teams is not that good either. “But he won a lot of games a long time ago” is getting to be an old refrain in Athens. If Richt was going to win a National Championship, he’d have done it before now. UGA needs a coach that can lead them to that level of success and unfortunately, Mark Richt has never been able to figure out how to do that in Athens.

This column and it’s varied responses remind me of an old Irish story : There was an optimist, a pessimist and a realist sitting at a bar. In front of them was glass of whiskey half full, or half empty, depending. As the optimist and the pessimist argued the liquid status inside the glass, the realist reached over, took the glass of whiskey and downed it, then said, ‘Gentlemen, the glass is actually very empty.’

IF South Carolina goes 10-2 they will win the SEC East. UGA has too many holes. No proven WR or RB. Murray struggled all spring because he does not have Durham and AJ Green. Crowell is no LAttimore. He is 180 pound back. Not an every down SEC back. OL will have zero depth and question marks at OT. Defensively, who is sold on your 3-4 and new DC? Your secondary will not be able to stop SOS’s passing attack and Alshon Jeffery.

CMR making 3 million a year coming off a 6-7 2010 should have us up for both games and we SHOULD be 2-0. IF he can’t I give up on him and say its time to find someone who can! Well Simple Tool (aka techster), you said it simply enough, you don’t think much of Georgia football, our coach, our school, or indeed anything about us…guess what? Well we don’t need to say it. Suffice to say that Mark Richt will be coaching at Georgia long after your boy Johnson is wherever there’s a school that’ll have run out of ideas as to how to compete – aka, to another Service Academy.

Yes young Mr. Lattimore got hurt in the Peach Bowl – yes I said Peach, I don’t recognize corporate America’s right to end tradition just in the name of selling fried chicken sandwiches. He got hit in the mouth…no concussion…no lost teeth…probably not even more than a stitch or two, if that…if he’d had a hockey player’s mental toughness he wouldn’t have even missed a snap. Now we know what it takes to, effectively, render him ineffective. And while I’m at it, Mr. Moore’s Heisman hopes will be pretty much dashed by the end of that Dome game.

Now how’s that for being delusional? After all Mr. Bradley opened the door, so why not barge through it?

Guys, it’s time to wake up to the fact that UGA is not a “traditional powerhouse” as it is so often called. One national championship 32 seasons ago, rarely even the tops of the SEC East, even more rarely tops in the SEc (obviously). Georgia has had some great players, sure, and some great victories, but it is essentially a regional team with occasional bursts of national prominence by the end of the season.

As stated before, Bradley just gave UGA the kiss of death with his prediction. He said the same last year and look what happened……. Why couldn’t you just say UGA will go 2-10? As a Dawg, that would have made me feel much better.

On a serious note. Love my Dawgs, but it’s just hard to get that excited about them when there has been so many let downs in recents years. I think our O-Line will be exposed. Boise St. will be very tough. I don’t see us beating SC. They will be very good. Does not matter what kind of team UF has, that always seems to be a given loss. UT will surprise us this year because we are hardly ever ready to play them. And there will be one mosre loss that nobody counted on. 8-4 best!

I hope I’m wrong, but this team is going to have to go out and prove it to many of us. There is just too much talk and not enough hard-nosed playing.

With Tech’s schedule they should be 8-4 as well. If their QB passes more accurately and more often they could win 9 to 10. Just my opinion.

I think your analysis is plausible and possible, but unlikely. But who really knows? That’s why they play the games, isn’t it? I am not sure what you see there (as a sportswriter you cetainly have a better view and better info than most), but I think it is unwise to stake so much on a recruiting class, especially in the SEC where there are so many close games, and taking well going season and good record on the road to visit a struggling team (whose only highlight of the season would be beating you) is always so dangerous. Being a steeled veteran in the SEC wars matters. I guess you must be seeing a change in coaching situation. Perhaps CMR has started to impose some discipline and breathe some fire when necessary. Unless the coaching approach has changed, Drean Team won’t matter. Again, we’ll see. You have them beating Boise State, and they will have to be new team from top to bottom to do that. Your whole prognostication depends on that, because if they lose in the Dome to a second tier team to start the season (and they very well could), everything following that, especially the next game with SC, changes. Good column and interesting take on things.

Sad, isn't it

June 11th, 2011
12:20 pm

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t been since the preseason #1 ranking two years ago.

Sit back and be grateful for the six or seven wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 8-4 or even 9-3 occasionally, but Florida will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 10 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.

It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.

Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.

Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.

Richt’s record vs. Fla is 2-8.

In last 4 seasons, UGA’s is trending down.

11 wins in 07′
10 wins in 08′
8 wins in 09′
6 wins in 10′

You’d have to be beyond common sense to not see that trend. And it’s a problem. Means Richt doesn’t know how to fix it.

Additionally, UGA has never had a winning season, since 1980, with a freshman starting at RB.

Dunder

June 11th, 2011
1:52 pm

Since 1992, that’s almost 30 years, UGA has only had 2 1000 yards rushers, Musa and Moreno. Both 2002 & 2007, got a 1000 yard ruser. Both were great seasons.

Only happened 2 of the 25 rb’s Richt has worked with at UGA. So, 8% of backs go on to become 1000 yard rushers under Richt. 92% don’t.

Since 1992, in 19 years, 1 out of 19 years, a true freshman RB got 1000 yards–mus Smith did it in 2002, Moreno was a redshirt freshman in 2007.

Odds 1 out 19 a true freshman, like Crowell, will rush for 1000 yards.

6% chance Crowell rushes for 1000 yards+ as atrue freshman at UGA.

94% chance he won’t.

UGA was 10th in SEC in rushing last season.

Well, when you’re 10th in SEC in scoring vs. winning teams, 8th vs. ranked teams, out of 12 SEC teams, your strategy is wrong. That’s why I don’t see much changing because Richt thinks he doesn’t need to change his strategy. My thing is, if Richt couldn’t make his West Coast passing style work with AJ & Durham & Charles, still was 10th in SEC in scoring against winning teams out of 12 SEC teams, then it’s not going to work without AJ & Durham, 2 NFL draft picks. The last 4 SEC winners ALL got over 215+ rushing per game on average, Richt’s down around 140.

“Since 1992, that’s almost 30 years……,” no kidding?

But thanks for pointing out that Richt has been the only guy at Georgia in (its 18 seasons actually), to have produced very good RBs.

Althought if you really wanted you percentages to means anything , it’s 1 out of 10 for the TF, since I am sure you agenda is more about Richt than anything else.

Ignoring of cource Moreno did it twice, so now thats 3, and a couple other were close, so half the time he does have a very productive single back, AND more imprortantly his teams have always had 2000-2500 combined rushing yards, so unless you just are in love with a single guy getting 1000 yards, you really haven’t made much of a point.

Except that true freshman are going to be true freshman. Was somebody saying anything different?

UGA winning the East is wishful thinking. Possible but not likely. Essentially the same 6-7 team minus some stars. I can see LSU coming out of the west. Doubt anyone goes undefeated in the SEC. Looks like all the top teams are in the west and will bump each other. A lower tier team (UK, UM, UV) will beat at least 1 team in an upset.

I never said say he was low in passing attempts. YOU said he was low in rushing attempts , (trying to make some philosophical point I suppose, which fails every otehr year of his career) and I am pointing out if he had more plays in total, which would have evened this team out with the rest of the league, his rushing attempts would also have been higher. And his passing attempts. So?

It’s not a theory. It’s basic math. .56(+1) is a positive number.

My prediction:

UGA loses to both Boise State and South Carolina to start season 0-2, and everyone will be losing their mind and calling for Richt’s head. Then Richt will go on a 7 game win streak with one of those wins being over a crappy Florida team. We will then start thinking we are better than we are and then lose at home to a lousy Auburn team( who coincidentally has a bye week before they play us). We will then clinch the East the next week with a win over Kentucky. There is a chance that South Carolina will have lost 3 conference games by then because they are South Carolina, and well… choking is what they do. So should the Dawgs clinch the East, they will probably be looking ahead to the SEC title game… which means they’ll probably half a$$ around vs. an inferior Tech team, and lose.

At 8-4,the Dawgs will then limb into the GA Dome with zero momentum for the SEC title game, where they will proceed to get curb stomped by Alabama. Dawgs will then finish the season with a meaningless win over a Big 10 team in the Outback Bowl for a final 9-5 record. This of course means that Richt will get to stay, which will further prolong the agony.

Coach Richt won SEC by bringing in Christain ethic and work to talents. This aint Tenn orange pumkins with the Dooley Boy and doofus AD. We are the Georgia BullDAWGS. We loaded up with talents and then getting rid of stinky players to reload from more open schollies. That makes us best and more Christian.

Coach Richt not goning do hot sitting cause he shows time again that he wins with talents. We just had to rid stinkys like Ealey. With Cromwell and returning starters Dawgs got talents to winning East and all those trying to cast out Coach Richt be sorry. We installed new defense last year and this we know how to play with right type of players and experience now.

Plus we got returning QB and King in backfield for depth and experience in how to play. That and commitment to faith in God is what separates 2011 Dawgs into best team in SEC. That also means we win BCS because BCS is there for SEC.

I can not wait for this season to get atarted so all this crap stops and we let the teams, decide what articles are written, and how the season goes. 13 pages and counting based on a journalist for the AJC’s predictions and the resulting crap from both sides of the track. None of us has a clue as to how the season is going to go for any team. There are very few sure bets in college football, before the season even begins anyway. Past history is just that, PAST. With the roster turn overs each year in college football, it is pretty hard to say how each team will do from one year to the next. The biggest joke of all is saying how this recruit or that will change the landscape for a particular school. A portion of these athletes will not qualify academically, and a certain percentage of them, will not be as good as advertised at the next level after high school. Making predictions on this school or that school, assumes a lot of optimism and we all know what assume means. These coaches get paid to recruit the players so they probably know a little more than the average fan does on here. I know I sure as the devil, am not knowlegable enough to second guess them.
Until they actually play, and in order to prevent a massive amount of changed blog handles, it is best to temper your comments and insults.

That what I talking about. What Bammers doing is what Dawgs need start doing to increase winning even more. We got to cut loose the stinkys players and bring in more talents on freed schollies. The blaming for not doing that lies with Adams and McG for trying to restrict Coach Richt from casting out players who not using and exposing talents like parables says. With talent pipeline from running ownership of state Dawgs can reload talents each year for total dominants. But Dawgs and Coach Richt got to be allowed to do Christain thing of getting rid the players that not exposing talents and respecting opportunity to be in charge in Athens with nice ladies.

Cut the 3 fumbles (each) vs. GA & Airforce, and GT is 8-5. Cut the TOs and/or poor special teams play vs. NCST, Clem, and VT, and GT wins at least 1 of those for a 9-4 record, minimum!

Too many UGA fans read what he says and then become “delusional” assuming the Dawgs are going to “run the table” in 2010 or they will “win the SEC East” in 2011, just b/c Phil Steele (expert in his own mind) gave his opinion.

Tennessee 6-6? Could be if everything goes wrong. Last year, we had a stout 1st team, but no depth. This season, the depth is better, and we have a 2nd unit that is actually a true 2nd unit. Right now we have 8 O-linemen that can handle their business. If two of the incoming guys pan out, we’ll be fine on offense. Linebacker is the question mark on defense, and we could always use more depth on the D-line. I’ll be disappointed in anything worse than 7-5, but expect to contend for the SEC championship in 2012.

Gents, by definition a powerhouse program is

June 13th, 2011
11:17 am

By definition, a college football powerhouse is defined by % wins over say 10-12, 15 years. UGA by that one definition is a powerhouse.

Another definition of a college football powerhouse are the bowl venues that the subject school attends. UGA has in the last 10 or 12 years been to about 3 Sugar Bowls, two Capital One bowls, at least one Outback.I will not count the Chic Fil A or the Weedeater or the Music City Bowl. They are not considered MAJOR MAJOR. The Cap One is a great, great venue and any program like say GT, would steal or do anything to get that bowl by default. UGA has been there about three times in 12 years. THEY DO PAY $$$$.

A powerhouse is also defined by $$$. Show me the MONEy. UGA is $$$ loaded.

Another definition is one put forth by so called TV Sports experts and last Fall, ESPN sportscasters said that the Head C job at UGA is right in there with Ohio State, Texas, Florida and Southern Cal in prestige, and facilities. Money talks and B SH walks.

Another definition of a powerhouse program is in $$$$ BRAND AWARENESS and UGA is either second or third………………….again a clear signal of a solid BIG TIME SCHOOL.

Besides, we love our alma mater, win or lose ………..clowns. Stay jealous UGA haters, we love that.

One more definition of big boy ball

June 13th, 2011

Last Year Auburn was the Ugly Duckling. Somebody nobody likes, believes, or gives any future for wins it all. But there is another story: found in the book Fairly Stupid Tales. The Ugly Duckling. In this story Everyone writes off the duckling except the ugly duckling. He knows that one day he will grow up and be a beautiful swan. Unfortunately for him, he was wrong and ended up being just a really ugly duck [read: college football team]. That is the difference between Auburn 2010 and 2011.

If the author’s prediction of fewer fumbles on O and a tighter D comes true for Georgia Tech, then you can look for the Jackets to be in the race for the Coastal again. There’s been some great statistical proof that the CPJ Spread Option teams have their best seasons when fumbles are reduced – 2009 at Tech was one such team. Now if we had a defense that season, I’m think it wouldn’t have stopped at 11 wins. I actually think the biggest factor mitigating a breakthrough in such a situation (fewer fumbles with a better defense) is going to be slow growth at receiver (unless a medium-range passing game is successful – we saw this look on T-Day). So, my reasons for saying we’re looking at 8-4 is that I’m not willing to brag. I think the team has a slightly higher upside if questions on O-line and in the passing game are answered. But I stand behind the idea that fewer fumbles always seems to light the fuse on CPJ’s Spread Option and a better D can only help.

Go Jackets? Yes. Always. Only. Ever. Go Jackets!

Does this guy ever look at schedules before making his predictions? Example: UGA has probably 5 guaranteed wins this year: CoastCar, OleMiss, Vandy, NewMexSt, Kent. So, they are going to win 5 more games that are toss ups? While UT pretty much has 6: Mont, Cinci, Buff, MidTenn, Kent, Vandy. And they won’t win any other games? This analysis simply lacks any logical thought. Why is this guy employed to write this drivel?

UGA fans may be the most delusional on the planet. I moved to Atlanta in 1998, and every year I hear nonsense about UGA winning the SEC and National Championship. No matter how they did the previous year, no matter who they have coming back, no matter their schedule, etc. Simply, if you look at last year, who they lost, and their schedule, no reasonable person sees 10 wins. This article is a complete joke.

The SEC East is a complete crap shoot with 4 teams that can win it. But none of those teams is going to get 10 wins.

Lattimore drug the entire UGA defense for almost 200 yards last year. He has an extra 15 pounds of muscle and a year of SEC experience. How exactly are the Dawgs going to stop him? Don’t say he came up as a surprise because he did worse to a UF team in Gainesville with more talent than UGA (and most schools in the entire country).

Mark, You’re absolutely right! Georgia will be 10-2 or better. I can see us beating the imposters (MST) in athens by a couple. I also think that everyone hating UGA right now is absolutely terrified!! It has to be scary tho know that the nation best LB core and THE best QB in the country will be comng at you. Add Tavaris King, Israel Troupe, Marlon Brown, Orson Charles and its easily better than last years receiving corp! I just hope the rest of the SEC is ready shut their mouths when the DAWGS demolish the SEC.

Hey Cock, there were also five teams that you played who did stop Lattimore, and if you think he come into Sanford this year and do that then you are about as stupid as most of these Auburn fans on these boards. Your pathetic little program has never beaten the Dawgs in back to back meetings, and it ain’t gonna start now. If you have not heard, the Dawgs have added 700 lbs. of run stoppers to the D, you will NOT see the same results from the Dawgs defense as you did last season.

4 clear wins are on the schedule (not gimmes, Richt lost to Colorado last year):
Coastal Carolina, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, New Mexico State

8 games are potential losses (Richt went 0-6 vs. winning teams in 10′, 2-9 vs. ranked teams since 09′): Boise, SC, Tenn, Kent, Ga Tech, Auburn, Florida, Miss St.

Don’t know how you pick a team to go 10-2 and win the east that just went 6-7 and scored just 6 points in their final game against UCF(really), and they lost a lot of key offensive players, One man (Murray) can’t do it by hisself. I see UGA going 8-4 finshing tied 2nd in the east with UF, I think South Carolina will win the east with 10 or 11 wins and Bama will win the west with 1-loss. Your article sounds just like a in state newspaper in GEORGIA.

Not long ago? 11 years? SC isn’t terrible, Do you think SC will be better this year? Do you think a UGA team without its best playmaker in last years game ( AJ Green) and it was Murray’s first game in the SEC and it was on the road, Do you think he’ll be better? Think UGA will be better and the game is in Athens. Last years game was close and with the fumbles by UGA the game could been much closer.
So recap, last year close game, no AJ, fresh QB, new D, and on the road, turn over on the goal line and still was very close game. This year, better D, experinced QB, and in Athens. Unless Sc got really better since the last game, I don’t see UGA lossing that game at home.

As possibly the only person in the nation to have attended both G-Tech (undergrad) and Boise State (grad school) you can just imagine my glee when the Broncos punish the Dawgs on Sept. 3… (anyone remember BSU-Va Tech last year in D.C. – in front of 80,000 maroon fans?)

richt may have more talent this year than any team in the league except alabama—if he can’t win 10+ with this group, it’s time to hit the road.

Tech will go undefeated if it trades in the Triple Option and goes to Wishbone or Veer with the same lineup and option game, but better passing and lead blockers. Imaging Josh Nesbitt at QB, Jon Dywer at LH, and Athony Allen at RH, Calvin Johns at WR, Orwin Smith at Slot back and Bay Bay at the other other WR, and combine that with our new defense. Wishbone just move Dywer to FB and Smoth to Lh….

Mark,

I see 4 easy wins vs. Coastal, New Mex, vanderbilt, and Ole Miss.

Where do the other 6 wins come from?
Florida–No (2-8 record Richt vs. Florida)
Boise- No (Richt’s 2-9 vs. ranekd teams)
Miss St- No (lost last time, 2-9 vs. ranked teams)
Aub- No (more talent, on a roll, better coaches)
Tenn- No (lost last 2 in Knoxville, this is in Knox)
Kentucky- No (Richt lost 2 out of last 4 games)
GA tECH- mAYBE (rICHT’S 2-1 VS. jOHNSON)
South Car- NO (Lost last time, Latt/Garcia/Jeff, Better coaches, 2-9 vs. ranekd teams)

Looking at 4-6 wins, max.

Mark, you may be correct about LSU. With Zack Mettenberger as their QB, they should have a say about who wins the East. Mett would have been the starter at UGA last season over Murray , I believe, if he hadn’t gotten himself into trouble. He ended up taking his JUCO team to the national championship. The kid is a player……

It’s always alot of fun to make predictions before the season starts. I would challenge you to post this article again after the the national champion is named to see whether you really have insight into college football, or whether you had a bad meal last night.
