Hope for Auburn? Toxic trustee Bobby Lowder steps aside

Yet another big story breaks over the Loveliest Village of the Plains, and this one has the feel of a new dawn rising. The toxic Bobby Lowder has decided not to seek another term on Auburn’s board of trustees. The first two words of an editorial in the Opelika-Auburn News were these:

“Good riddance.”

It was hard to know exactly how much power Lowder wielded over Auburn athletics because his modus operandi was to be seen but never heard.  I once asked another SEC athletic director if some booster could be classified as his school’s Bobby Lowder, and the AD thought for several moments. Then he said: “I’m not sure anyone else has a Bobby Lowder.”

Conventional wisdom holds that Lowder, an Auburn grad who came to power as head of the Montgomery-based Colonial BancGroup (seized by the Feds in 2009), essentially fired Terry Bowden as football coach in the middle of the 1998 season and almost fired Tommy Tuberville  five years later. It was a plane owned by Lowder’s bank that made the infamous flight to Sellersburg, Ind., carrying Auburn officials to interview then-Louisville coach Bobby Petrino — for a job that was technically not open.

Auburn president William Walker and athletic director David Housel, both of whom were aboard the plane, wound up resigning. Lowder, however, was immovable. He’d become a trustee in 1983, but his influence was mighty long before that. He was considered Auburn’s biggest donor and its de facto CEO. (Here’s an ESPN story on Lowder from 2006, written by esteemed former colleague Mike Fish.)

In January the New York Times quoted former AD Mike Lude on Lowder thusly: “I would describe him as a person who is very quiet, very much behind the scenes, yet very much involved. My wife one time said, ‘You know, Mike, Bobby Lowder really acts like the Auburn Tigers are his professional football franchise.’ ”

Lowder wouldn’t talk to the Times for that story. Lowder never talked to anybody. When the Auburn Plainsman, the student newspaper, was critical of Lowder, it wound up being subjected to what Jennifer Foster of the Opelika-Auburn News calls a “retaliatory restructure.” In 2004, Auburn nearly lost its accreditation as a university — this time its probation was levied not by the NCAA but by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools — due to meddling by its trustees.

Even the most rabid Auburn fans could never endorse Lowder. Why would one man want so much power? Why were so many afraid of him? Indeed, Lowder’s latest appointment to the board of trustees prompted a lawsuit and led Foster to wonder in print if Gov. Robert Bentley’s decision to reappoint Lowder had anything to do with a campaign contribution of $25,000 made by Lowder’s wife.

But now the man behind the curtain is gone, or at least going. (Lowder’s term expires next year.) He’ll leave having finally seen his Tigers win a national championship, but it was a championship accompanied by more skepticism than any in history. Much of that had to do with Cam Newton’s father, yes, but much could be traced to the knowledge that Auburn was, and had long been, Bobby Lowder’s team.

This story is going to get big. Start the popcorn. The NCAA is going to takeout Auburn and the fact the banker quit will not help them one bit. The only way Auburn could compete was to buy players and that is documented before this year folks. The banker, the woodman and the old drunk coach understood they had to cheat otherwise they were Kentucky in blue and orange. The SEC is about to take a hit but in the end all of the SEC schools and many of the ACC schools will be so much better off due to the trash will be removed from our great game. They will need a dumpster to remove the trash fromt that school and the large version as well.

Bobby Lowder controlled the Board by making loans and doing favors to the other members and that is how he maintained control. Alot of the same people lost money (and faith) in Lowder after the Colonial fiasco. His time had ran out, I assure you he would not give up the power if he did not have to. Ready for football…RTR

I suspect the root of Lowder’s departure lies in the failure of his bank. His wealth was probably derived from the his bank stock which is now worthless. Money created the power he wielded and I bet the money is gone or greatly depleted. Auburn will be much better off in the long run if they will install a mechanism to prevent other Bobby Lowders from stepping up. One man should not have that much control over a public institution.

Lowder ran Auburn with an iron fist for over 30 years. Pat Dye’s pay for play policy can be linked directly to Lowder as can the Bowden problems of the 90’s, the Petrino issue, and the departure of Tommy Tubberville. Tubberville was never a Lowder surrogate, and I believe that Tubby tried to run a clean program. In addition to the football program, Lowder ran roughshod over academics, selecting deans, presidents, and tinkering with and eliminating academic programs that Lowder felt were useless, such as music and art. It will take years and maybe probation for Auburn to recover from Lowder’s toxic influence. And, yes, Leebern is the poor man’s Bobby Lowder.

Everyone I know who is associated with Auburn hates Bobby Lowder. Like any kingpin, he is known for his ruthless behavior and lack of developing a consensus from people he works with.

The midnight flight to talk to Petrino is one of the most unethical events in college athletic history. I’m sure similar incidents have occurred at other schools, but Auburn seems to wallow in them.

Perhaps with the fall of Lowder’s bank life on the Plains will resort to a somewhat normal existence.

Auburn is in DEEP DEEP trouble, and the Trustees know it.

Thats why Auburn is desparately trying to separate itself from Lowder.

Why? And better yet, Why Now??

Because the folks at Auburn KNOW the NCAA is on its way.
They know the NCAA is going to blast Auburn.

When the NCAA gets thru trashing Ohio State, theyll turn their teeth on Auburn.

And thats going to open the door to a far-ranging review of the entire SEC

If the NCAA is willing to throw Ohio State and Jim Tressel under the bus,
SEC fans everywhere should be very afraid of what the NCAA is going to do the SEC.

That will open the door for the NCAA to put the grey-shirting and over-signing
and a whole list of other issues on the table.

And I dont think the NCAA is going to stand any longer for the numerous methods
of cheating and fraud that is so pervasive and well-established in the SEC.

Auburn is in SERIOUS trouble. And soon, the entire SEC will be also.

No, the NCAA isn’t going to hammer Auburn. Auburn University hasn’t even received an LOI. The NCAA has stated on numerous occasions that nobody at Auburn could be connected to Cecil Newton’s conversation with Mississippi State boosters (who then told other boosters…but that’s a different problem) about money. The HBO stories are just that…stories. Stories with no names attached, no less. Those of you that are waiting for the NCAA to drop the hammer on Auburn are going to be waiting a long time, because facts of both cases suggest that it won’t happen.

But Internet mythology is more fun, so keep bangin’ that drum. You’ll be the one looking ridiculous in the end though.

Auburn has nothing to worry about. The NCAA enforcement folks are totally gutless. Unless someone at AU admits a wrongdoing, nothing will happen. The SEC office has a primary concern with any SEC coach being critical of the SEC and/or its enforcement/compliance group. Heavy penalties if any school official criticizes anyone in the SEC. Other than that, oversigning/pay for play/etc is all okay as long as the school is bringing in money for the SEC. For the NCAA compliance folks, they totally believe anyone who says “I didn’t know”. Any form of denial of a violation is viewed as a way of slithering out of levying a heavy punishment. At OSU, kids who had nothing driving around in new cars and ‘no one knew’ anything was wrong. You watch, the NCAA will absolutely buy that story as it is a gutless way to avoid dropping the hammer.

Clealry theres a lot of folks that dont realize how serious it is at Auburn.

When the Auburn Board of Trustees tells its #1 Multi-Multi-Millionaire Contributor
of many years to take a hike, it can only mean bad things are coming.

It means the Board has realized that the trouble they are now facing
is significantly worse than the value of all the money he can contribute.

Lowder didnt quit. He was TOLD to quit.

Auburn is DESPARATE to separate themselves from Lowder before
the NCAA comes to town to try minimize the damage.

Dont kid yourselves, Auburn is in DEEP DEEP trouble.

This has already been written about:
The Chief Financial Officer from Cecil Newton’s Newnan, GA church, Bobbie Blandburg, has already been quoted in the New York Times, that she has no freakin idea where $60,000+ in cash came from
to pay for the repairs to the church.

It appears only one person knows: Cecil Newton.

And the contractors that did the work were paid IN CASH for the repairs.

As written before, Money always leaves a trail.

And that trail will eventually lead back to Auburn and/or its boosters.
Perhaps back to one particular booster.

I still believe that the NCAA will use its investigation of Auburn to pull back
the curtain of systemic corruption on the entire SEC.

Theres no way the NCAA is going to continue to allow grey-shirting,
over-signing and many other nefarious methods of cheating used by the SEC.

Go ahead and put it on the calendar: the NCAA will arrive in Auburn by September 1, 2011.

Auburn’s and the SEC’s troubles are just beginning.

You simply don’t know what you are talking about. Thayer Evans (of all people) wrote in January that the contractors HAVEN’T been paid by Cecil Newton, and don’t expect to be. They are quoted as saying that Cecil Newton gave of the impression of a guy that DIDN’T have money, and wasn’t going to pay. The church isn’t New Birth. It’s essentially an airplane hangar. As of late January, the only repairs made to it were to prevent it from being condemned, AND IT DIDN’T EVEN HAVE A CERTIFICATE OF OCCUPANCY.

The mis-information passed around in the Cecil Newton case is absolutely mind-boggling. Facts suggest that Auburn did nothing wrong, only that Mississippi State may be in some trouble. But never let facts get in the way of a good story, right 404?

Wow, Bobby lowder has decided to step aside?

This can’t be good for Auburn in the short turm because it’s a sign that his cheating ways have either been uncovered by the NCAA or they are getting too close.

Funny thing is that, Lowder is the one who suggested that Pat Dye needed to step aside when his cheating ways, which were at the direction of Lowder were found out.

I wonder what Auburn will name after Bobby lowder. For Dye it was the football field and for Jordan it was the stadium. Auburn has an established history for dedicating monuments too their most successful cheaters, so , it will be intersting to see what Lowder get’s his name on.

My advice to Auburn fans. This is the perfect opportunity for the fans and alumni to push for total reform of the Auburn foot ball program. It’s high time to clean the program up. 50+ years of paying players has made Auburn’s program a total disgrace.

Do you know of any other BOT members that would void a contract because his team (walkon jock sniffer at Auburn was Rayne) got their azz beat 36-0 knowing it would cost him 6 million before sundown?? If you think buying players with front pocket money is a problem for Auburn then you don’t understand the banker, the woodman nor the old drunk coach. The only way Auburn can compete is to buy elite players and they do and have since the old drunk coach came to the plains. How many schools do you know that still have former coaches from the 80/90’s still on the payroll just to keep it down home cuz! The Auburn Creed….”does anyone know you’re at the bank”…Pat Dye

Anyone who believes you can take two loser coaches like Chizik and Ted (Leaky) Roof and have the success All-Barn has had without major cheating is kidding themselves.

Tubs and Tatter Tott were trying to clean up the program, or at least make it somewhat respectable. It’s what got them fired.

Chizik was desperate, and malleable to Auburns sleazy ways. Got him hired.

What’s that? This last one was only a driving incident? Well that didn’t matter to all you high and mighty a-holes last year–did it? An arrest is an arrest.

Enter your comments hereMark Bradley you really are pathetic. Bobby Lowder was right to fire Terry Bowden and the Jetgate was a black eye, but how many other schools in the SEC participate in shifty stuff? I am sure Rodney Garner and Richt appeal to parents want that their kids get stern dicipline and good grades.

Lowder presided over AU for the past 30 years in which we won 6 SEC titles, 3 undefeated seasons and one national title (should be two or three but Miami deserved to jump AU in 1983 despite playing a weak schedule).

One of the best parts of the AU title is seeing UGA fans up in arms. They can no longer hold their 1980 title over AU heads as a more recent championship. They are bitter that they have not tasted an undefeated season since 1980 and we have tasted 3.

Auburn under Tubs and know Chizik has one of the highest grad rates inthe SEC and when our players do wrong they actually are punished and held accountable. UGA fans throwing stones is laughable.

BTW – that undeafeated season was a joke in 1980. 12 D1A opponents with a 41% winning percentage combined. 5 teams with 3 or more loses. No team with 10 wins they beat. WOW!!! What a joke. They may claim a title in 1980 but UGA fans should look at 1883, 1993, 2004 and 2010 AU teams to see what a real champion looks like.

HAHAHAH WAR EAGLE AND KISS THE RING!!! Maybe you’ll get a taste one day but I don’t see any SEC schedules for UGA ike they had in 1980 so probably not!! LOL!

Macon look at the AU 2007 and 2008 recruiting classes under Tubs and look at how many ACTUALLY start or contribute. that is why tubs is gone…same with Bowden. Tubs deserved to go.

You might also look at Chizik as an assistant at AU and at UT. He fielded one of AUs best defenses in 2002. He also understands you need a good offense. Something Tubs never knew. I am sure judging chizik and Roof as head coaches at Iowa State and Duke is deep thinking for UGA sidewalk alumnus but at AU we are a little more thoughtful.

I am truly amused by this thread. The truth is most Auburn grads and fans were not fans of Bobby Lowder. Most Auburn folks play the game the way it is supposed to be played. It wasn’t Cam that made our team. It wasn’t Lowder that funded our team. It was a group effort, where in the 2nd time in history a bunch of talented youngsters played their heart out for the school. Those of you that think otherwise don’t understand Auburn. Then again the guy on top always gets the most attention…..WDE….We wouldn’t have it any other way….

Actually Cam did make your team. Just like Tebow made the UF teams. Once in a lifetime player. Whether or not Cam got paid, it makes no difference as to what he did on the field. He was clearly a dominant player. Auburn won the title on the field with players that it recruited. As a dawg fan, it was nothing but impressive. I don’t like all the “cheaters” talk. Until there is actually evidence that anything was done wrong Auburn and Cam had one hell of a 2010 season. I get that this man has owned Auburn football and acted like sports at a public university were his private domain. What I don’t get is the comments that seem to indicate UGA, FL, FSU, UT, LSU, AL, etc., are any different. And we can grouse all we want but so far Cam is sitting pretty. No charges, an NFL berth, Heisman, etc. We didn’t do this when the other SEC schools won championships and we didn’t stick up for AU in 2004 when AU should have gone to the BCS Bowl. I see players leaving UGA because they can’t handle the academics or because they are thugs who abuse the privileges and opportunities being a Dawg affords. There’s been other violations but the hatred for AU is mind blowing. I’m not jealous that another SEC team is the national champion if we aren’t and I hope Richt can bring it back. We just look like we are jealous and are poor losers. And what about our own situation with our board member and Yoculan that was an open secret for years. We sure looked classy and above board. And you are right. AJ sold his jersey…and he was punished severely and turned our season’s already dismal prospects into a nightmare. I don’t hide from that fact. Nor do I point at other schools claiming that their cheating justifies my own. We broke the rules and paid the price.

Why is it that Auburn fans never think they should have to pay the price for cheating. Oh…that’s right–it is because the only success you have ever known was a result of cheating.

Bobby Lowder has become the “lightening rod” for many, especially the media. He angered the Journalism department by suggesting some changes which made fiscal sense a number of years ago and they immediately used the “power of the press” to demonize him–and some of these “journalists” have never let up. Is he perfect? No. None of us is. However, several journalists, in published articles since his decision to withdraw as a candidate for another term on the board, have written that there has never been a more devoted Auburn supporter than Bobby Lowder. In the end, I believe that the good he has done for the university will far exceed any damage that may have occurred. I am glad that he withdrew since I believe it was for the betterment of the university, and that is what he has been after for many, many years. War Eagle!

Then it was BAMA’s turn for eligle activity, then it was UT (finally, which ran a great program for many years.) and now that Auburn won, and beat everyone on their list convencingly, all the Haters come out and trash and mouth off. Well, be careful what you say. Your turn is coming. Be warned that you heard it here. To date, Auburn has not been charged nor have they been found of any illigal or false activity. Every kid that got caught was punished…and publicly vilified by the AJC. All UGA players paid the price for their transgressions.

CAM you say the same at Auburn? Or will you say the same old tired…there is no proof?

These are the facts:
UGA is down.
We haven’t been great in a long time.
Auburn has been great.
All of Auburn’s success is directly attributed to cheating.
I mean every good season they have ever had…all achieved through cheating.

My favorite SEC rivalry, AU vs UGA is now garbage because of the way you now play and the way your fans carry themselves. Sorry–you ruined something great. You deserve all of your upcoming heartache. (2 years ago I felt differently but Chizik has ruined a great thing.)

Face it folks, the NCAA has, specifically, noted that the ‘investigation’ is not closed. Now if you can get through the Uncle Milty McGregor’s trial next month without him throwing Auburn under those oak trees then you just might ’skate’…until the hush money runs out on, say, that ‘Trooper’ guy, and he threatens to tell all he knows about this mess.
