Live from Game 6: The Hawks look to book a Chicago return

Nobody figured it would be this tough for the Bulls. But it has been. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)

Nobody figured it would be this tough for the top-seeded Bulls. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)

It’s win or go home, except that the Hawks are already home. But you get the picture.

The series in quick review: Hawks shot great, played hard and won Game 1; Hawks did neither and lost Game 2; Hawks appeared ready to succumb in Game 3; they refuted such a notion in winning Game 4 and in clambering from 15 points down to take a brief lead in Game 5.

Larry Drew on his Hawks, speaking a few minutes ago: “I think people saw us as a team that would make the playoffs and wouldn’t do well … [What his men have done] is truly a testament to their commitment.”

Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau on his by-now-familiar opponent: “This is a quality team. They have quality depth. They have a lot of guys who can put it on the floor.”

This was reminiscent of what Dwyane Wade said after the Hawks beat his Heat in a Game 7 in 2009: “They’ve got five guys they can throw it to and have them make a play.”

Along the way, we’d lost sight of that. The epic Round 2 collapse against Orlando last spring skewed our view of these Hawks, and this middling regular season did nothing to make us remember. But these playoffs have made us recall why it was we got excited about these Hawks in that giddy Boston series of 2008, and the giddiest of those nights came in Game 6.

The Hawks fell behind by 15 points early and you figured, “That’s that, done and dusted.” Then Josh Childress — remember Josh Childress made a tip-in that hung on the rim forever and cut the lead to one after the third-quarter horn — and the rest was astonishing.

Spanning the third and fourth quarters, the Hawks scored on 17 consecutive possessions. They did it against the Celtics, who would become NBA champs. “They thought they had us,” Josh Smith said, speaking of that star-spangled night.

But they didn’t, at least not in Game 6. And Chicago, like those Celtics a No. 1 seed, haven’t yet gotten a real handle on this bunch. The Bulls have won three games in the series, but their biggest lead in any game has been 15 points. If we return to the regular season, the Bulls led the Hawks by at least 19 in all three games.

Yeah, these are the playoffs, and they’re different. But the Hawks are also different. They’ve gotten good again. They can take this back to Chicago. They really can.

And with that, I turn it over to you. Another tight deadline looms tonight, so I’ll be flitting forth and back, but I welcome you company as we hurtle into Game 6. And if the Hawks score on 17 consecutive trips this evening, just recall who put a little bug in y’all’s ear.

NBA – JOHNSON BUCKLES UNDER PRESSURE
If Joe Johnson is unable to find his stroke tonight, the Hawks will likely lose. Unfortunately for the Hawks, Johnson doesn’t always perform when his back is against the wall. Johnson has the 2nd worst field goal percentage in Win-or-go-home playoff games among active players.

Wondering what’s gonna happen. I just hate seeing teams like the Bulls and Heat get better after we were superior the last few years. It must eat at the Hawks pride for the national media already talking Bulls-Heat. The Hawks as the underdog cause the team didn’t improve. But you say they did. I still look at this 2010-11 version of the Hawks as a continuation of last year’s team. Not making the Conference Finals is failure. I think I speak for all ATL fans. The Hawks players? Who knows what they’re thinking, but I hope they win tonite and Sunday in Chicago. This city has waited for that much to long. It would trounce Lebron’s display of redemption. This entire fan base would be drowning in it, and then there’d be the champagne.

Just finished watching the first quarter of game six. Josh Smith has been inept at best. When on offence he walks from foul line to foul line and does not move. My grand mother could guard him. He does not try to get any rebounds. On defense he skips from foul line to foul line and does not guard his man. Loul Deng has eaten him alive. We might as well be playing 5 on 4!! What this series has taught me:
-Josh Smith is easily our best player when he sticks to his game
-Teague is going to be a great PG
-JJ is aging. He can play great when he’s fresh but he just looks tired out there.
-Horford has something seriously wrong with him right now. It could be an injury or it could be something psychological. He’s been outplayed by the Bulls main four frontcourt guys (Boozer, Noah, Asik, Gibson)
-Marvin sucks and needs to be traded ASAP

The ony player I would keep would be Jeff Teague but all others need to GOOOOOOOOO!!!. I don’t care if we end up with the worst record in the NBA next year it would be better so we have a chance to get a bona fide superstar in the draft. I have had it up to height of heaven with Atlanta teams embarrassing us by stinking up the arena or field at home after the fans have paid their hard earned money to come out and cheer for them. And with this bunch of Hawks players they just don’t have any passion, fire, or any real desire to win. Enough is enough — get rid of these clowns.

I think the Hawks were simply spent after the Bulls put them away in the fourth qtr in game 5. Bulls doing what a number one seed should. It won’t come as currently constructed, but maybe the Hawks will be that team one day down the road. Need a real center and another scorer though. This team , however, is closer to being a lottery team than a true championship contender. I’ve seen this Hawks team before, back in the late 90’s with Steve Smith and mookie. Good enough for the playoffs, but no more. Hawks had to blow that up. Gonna have to do that with this bunch too.

You got to love all of these crazy people who think that Howard or any other real star is going to come to “blown up” franchise and start over… He and others want to win (now)!

Thanks Hawks, you gave us a glimpse (of real effort) for a change… Jamal and Marvin are done… Al Horford and Joe have to really do some soul searching this off season… Teague, kid don’t rest on this playoff… See if you can get in the Pan Am Games try outs for USA Basketball and try to get some time leading a team…

See you after they get a new CBA!

Well, our Hawks are who we thought they were. We all knew their ceiling was the 2nd round of the playoffs & the fanbase has no reason to believe that’ll change anytime soon. We’ve got cheap ownership, so a major free agent signing is out. No one wants our “bad” contracts, so a major trade is out. And we don’t have a 1st round pick next year (not that we’d know what to do with it anyway). [sigh]…depressing.

You know the most sickening thing about this game tonight? Absolutely everything about it, from the game itself all the way down to the ESPN broadcast felt like a Bulls/Heat undercard. It was as if the Bulls/Heat series was a foregone conclusion, and all that had to be done was getting this pointless Bulls/Hawks series closed up and out of the way. And our Hawks complied, quite disgustingly.

Such is life for an Atlanta Hawks fan. Same stuff for 40 years.

This is a running team who the Bulls made stand still. No chance tonight. No answer from the coaching staff. No creativity. Nothing new. Nothing different. Just standing still waiting on a pass instead of running plays, posting up, hook shots. The Bulls owned the paint on our end. Josh outside waiting on an open jumper which the Bulls did not care to guard him from a jumper. Josh Smith’s new nickname should be SELF-CHECK.

Lets go Braves!

Lets go Falcons!

p.s.

Are you guys seriously criticizing Marvin after this game and last? The guy hardly played outside garbage minutes. Al, Jamal and LD killed this team tonight. LD never holds the core four accountable. Jamal can go 0 for 20 with 10 turnovers and he’s still going to get another shot. The bottom line is that we are not getting much for Marvin, we can not move JJ because of his contract so the only trade options are Al, Josh and Jamal (sign and trade). I think that Josh has the bigger upside with the right coach so Al and Jamal must go. We also need to find a real coach. LD is an embarrassment…

There’s not a player on the Hawks anyone wishes they were. When we were growing up, everyone wanted to be Jordan. I bet there are thousands of kids all over America who in their driveways and gyms emulate Derrick Rose. Lots of folks want to be Lebron.

The Hawks don’t have one superstar player to hang their hats on, NOT ONE PLAYER!!!

They have only one in team history since they’ve been in Atlanta and that’s Dominique who they traded away.

It’s almost impossible to have this many years of terrible front office work in one town.

Everyone every year says, no negativity… believe.

Hawks fans you guys need a good GM and coach. When the Heat got Riley, that’s when we became relevant. He’s been with us 16 yrs and we have made the playoffs 13 times. He knows how to build teams and bow them up. I don’t care what anyone says. You can’t build teams thru the draft anymore, you have to make them. The good teams will do what ever they have to do to get the job done. The only team I can remember that has won a SHIP in the past 20 yrs without a superstar was Detroit 2004.

All you people seem to do is bash Joe Johnson for every Hawks loss. You have to realize that Joe Johnson is being handchecked, double teamed, and even triple teamed every time he touches the ball which limits his offensive production. The only way to beat the double team is with good ball movement which leads to open shots. The Hawks didn’t make those shots today as Joe, Josh, and Teague were the only Hawks who showed up. So stop blaming Joe for every Hawks loss.

Yo blog people! Marvin did not score in the last two games! What the —-? Joe yukes it up at mid court at game’s end. Al lays an egg against his college teammate that he usually dominates. We made Taj Gibson look like Lebron James. Oh yeah, we gave up 3 players and a first round draft pick to trade for a position that we already had covered in Jeff Teague! This team will need a major upgrade or a marketing genius before it gets another dime out me!

Okay, now that everyone has ganged up on the Hawks, let’s remember that EVERYONE thought the Hawks were going to be eliminated by Orlando in at best a six-game first round.

Then, when they upset the Magic, Mark himself said they would be lucky to win two games. While i grant you they only won two games, they were IN every game except #3 (even tonight’s game, they were only down TEN after playing a horrible offensive game.

The better team won, but it is NOT all bad for the Hawks. They have found their point guard in Jeff Teague, and the Hawks NOW know that Jamal Crawford is NOT the answer for instant offense off the bench, not against a good defensive team. They can therefore tell Jamal that they will sign him for $5-6 million, or he can become a free agent.

They need to find a good big man to play center, so Horford can play power forward where he belongs, and Josh can play small forward. Given the fight and teamwork they showed in the playoffs this year, they actually have a chance to convince a big man to come play for them.

I would LIKE to think they could trade Al or Josh or Joe as part of a package to Orlando to get Dwight Howard, but I know Dwight will go to either the Lakers or one of the New York area teams.

This I also know: Chicago has NO CHANCE to beat the Heat. They will clamp down on Rose and make the other four players beat them, and I do not believe there is enough talent on the Bulls to score enough against Miami. The Heat probably feared the Hawks more than they feared the Bulls, because the Hawks had more athletic players.

It will be the Heat in five, at worst six.

Have to be disappointed that they simply didn’t play a speck of defense, especially early on when the Bulls were shooting 70% from the floor.

Anyway, yet another season where we eclipsed the previous season.

04-05 won 13 games
05-06 won 26 games
06-07 won 30 games
07-08 won 37 games, made playoffs
08-09 won 47 games, made 2nd round
09-10 won 53 games, made 2nd round
10-11 won 2 games in 2nd round

Sure, it’s baby steps, but some level of improvement for 6 straight years – things could be worse folks!

This team has pieces (they are not great); but I remember Kobe sitting on the bench back in that Phoenix series years back… They had been spanked and people were saying he and Lamar Odom were never ever going to win in L.A. … Then they made the moves, didn’t blow up the team; but made solid moves and Gasol fell into their lap! Still, you got to make the right move…

Austen,

The issue with Joe (and there are several) is that when it is time for him to take over a game and leave his imprint, he just doesnt do it. I dont care what kind of defense they throw at you, usually your “go to” guys come thru. Nobody is blaming him for the loss, but we are blaming him for not showing up when it matters!!!

Good ball movement? How about good feet movement so there can be good ball movement. Bulls played us perfectly and we could not score and our defense was not in the same league so they beat us at BOTH ends of the court 4 out of 6 games. Joe was NOT getting double teamed every timne he touched the ball BTW, I seen many posessions that it was one on one and long arms were all in the air waving and when Joe moved, the dude was like a cat and moved with him. Bogans was who I seen on him like white on rice…or like the misses every time Josh shot a jumper, or free throw.

Could be worse, BUT this team was put together and was winning and was further along and should have been AHEAD of the Bulls. Should of made the conference finals before the Bulls. The BULLS took our spot. They jumped over us, leapfrogged us and what will our answer be? What is the plan to stop the Bulls next year? How can we jump back ahead of them? I think it starts with a center and probably a coach.

Gwinnett Fred

They go to a huddle shot down 15 at a time out.

Drew’s brilliant coaching:
“We can’t get it back all at once”
“We have to chip away at it”
“We can do this”

That’s fine for HIGH SCHOOL Larry, but how about drawing up a damn play that doesn’t take 23 seconds off the shot clock? Or set up some defense that can keep an opponent from shooting 70% from the floor.

These guys are SUPPOSED to be pros – leave the rah rah crap to the prepsters and DO SOME COACHING!!!!!
