A stirring Hawks’ playoff run dissolves in a familiar collapse

Another year, another head-in-a-towel ending in Round 2. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)

If they’d done nothing else this past month, the Hawks made us recall how it was in 2008, when they took the champs-to-be to a Game 7 in Boston. They’ve reminded us what fun having a good NBA team in this town can be. They’ve allowed us to say the words “playoff basketball” without cringing.

Three years after that improbable Celtics series, the Hawks had again smacked into the East’s No. 1 seed and refused to retreat. They stole Game 1 in Chicago on a flurry of shooting, outfought the Bulls over the final minutes of Game 4 to draw even in the series. And the Hawks’ loss in Game 5 shouldn’t have perturbed them — down 15 early, they seized a fourth-quarter lead before succumbing.

Thursday brought the series back here. Many of these Hawks had done bravura duty in a Game 6 victory against Boston in 2008. The Celtics took a 15-point lead, and that seemed that. But the Hawks converted 17 consecutive possessions spanning the third and fourth quarter and won at the end, and that was the first night of the 21st century that Philips Arena felt like a real basketball building.

This Game 6, sorry to report, started in similar fashion, but this one never got better. The Hawks trailed by 10 after one quarter, by 17 midway through the second. This was the time during the regular season when these Hawks would roll over and lose by 30 or 40, but you shouldn’t roll over in the playoffs. (Although sometimes it happens. Remember last year’s Orlando travesty.)

Over the past month it seemed the Hawks had become a team again, not just a gaggle of wide-eyed jump-shooters. They’d fought harder, defended better, even gotten a bit smarter. But now they were down double figures on a night when the Bulls were guarding better and finding more scorers than at any time in Games 1-5.

For all that had come before, this was the test of the New Hawks: Could they hold themselves together at a time when little was going right? Could they give the home folks — Philips wasn’t packed, by the way — a finish?

Nope. It got so bad the below-capacity throng began leaving with eight minutes left. Just when you thought these Hawks weren’t the old Hawks, they uncorked a stinker. (And they wonder why we don’t take them as seriously as they think we should.)

Trailing 70-53 after three quarters, it soon was 76-55, the Bulls having reduced the Hawks to … er, a gaggle of wide-eyed jump-shooters. Sure enough, the Hawks’ first four shots of the period were standstill jumpers.

And then came the moment when you knew this playoff flurry was finally done. Luol Deng jumped Joe Johnson at the head of the key, and the $120 million man ducked his head and went into one-on-one mode. Deng stole the ball and threw long for Derrick Rose, who dunked to make it a 21-point lead.

Yep. Here was Iso-Joe, the thing Larry Drew had been promoted to help curtail, going kerplunk in a win-or-else game. Once again, a wrenching season-ending loss has called into question what we just saw: Were the Hawks as good as they looked against Orlando, or were the Magic just the right opponent? Were the first five games of this series a function of the Bulls’ relative playoff newness or a indication the Hawks had began to figure things out?

Said Al Horford, who missed eight of 10 shots and took only four rebounds: “You’ve just got to give them credit. You have to really execute on offense well against them, and we didn’t do that.”

Then: “They were the better team. They were more solid, more consistent.”

When you lose Game 6 on your floor by 20 points on a night when you never led, you leave your audience to wonder. For a few bright shining moments, these Hawks made us (almost) forget their tepid regular season, but then, just as we began to hope and maybe even believe, they got blown out.

Speaking before Game 6, Drew had said of his Hawks: “I think people saw us as a team that would make the playoffs and wouldn’t do well … [What his men have done] is truly a testament to their commitment.”

And it was, until finally it wasn’t. For all this team’s talent — and it has a boatload — there’s still something missing. Maybe a full season of Jeff Teague at the point will be the ticket. But it’s clear the separation between the NBA’s elite clubs and these Atlanta Hawks still exists.

The Hawks beat Orlando, and that was nice. They took the Bulls to six games, which was heartening. In the end it was another Round 2 exit, the third in a row, but give them this: At least they weren’t swept.

Well when a team has it’s back to the wall and then get’s blown out at home, it says allot about character, and personal make up.

Why would anyone spend their hard earned dollars to support this attitude ?

We beat our nemisis on their home court and took the leagues best team to 6 games. I know we all want the Hawks to play better, look better and not emarrass us but our expectations for a team this town has bad-mouthed all year are a little high. This life long Hawks fan is proud of them and is looking forward to next season with a new starting PG.
And I’m tired of hearing people b*tch about us paying Joe too much money. Be lucky we were able to get one of the Top 5 free agenst last year to play for us. If we would not have signed him we would have been left second teir guys and the Atlanta crowd continually saying we can never get an all-star to come play in Atlanta. Quit your griping and support your Atlanta teams….or just move back north…

One day, I hope Joe Johnson learns that the Hawks dont pay him millions of dollars, and the fans dont come out to see him dribble the ball with his back to the goal. If the shot is not there, move the damn ball around, and expect it to come back your way.

To many one on one players on this team. Oh well, what might have been.

One positive…have the hawks in Teague found a point guard for now instead of the future?

Proven facts: The Hawks can’t count on Iso Joe to come through. The Hawks can’t win with 1 on 1 play. Chicago has proven that TEAM play wins. No team can win when the jumper is taken and all you see around the basket is opposing players. It’s time to shake up the mix again and make part of the exiting players Iso Joe. Surely somebody thinks that he can take them to the promised land. If we keep Joe, then the fans and the coaching staff will have to not count on him. Oh, yes, if we keep Mr. Smith, fine him $10,000.00 every time he gets out past the 3 point line on offense.

And….there was no rebounding last night. At least in the other games, they tried to rebound.

Just think, the Hawks could have had a young backcourt of Jordan Crawford and TEAGUE in 2012, but all they will have is an old KIRK. overpaid JOE, and a overrated AL. For all the hell JOSH took, he played 100 times better than AL HORFORD. Plus the HAWKS traded their number 1 draft pick away for KIRK.

The worst thing about the playoff run is that the Hawks and their fans might actually believe that somehow they are a decent team.? Cmon the Bulls played horrid in the two games they lost and the Magic -well they never showed up to play. The Hawks have no heart and no brains -and that won’t take you very far in anything.

Josh Smith has heart? That’s pretty funny, he’s obviously dead weight and shows no sign of improvement or becoming THE GUY that this franchise desperately needs. package up ZaZa, Marvin, and Smith and go get a #1 guy somewhere. ANYWHERE.

Looking back, very please with the play of Crawford and Teague. JJ was better than he’s been in past playoff runs but we really needed him to take over last night and he was nowhere to be found.

It’s obvious to pretty much everyone except for a few where the dead weight is on this team. Remedy that and they beat the Bulls 9 times out of 10. That puts you in the Eastern Conf Finals…

They need to fill out their becnh with good role players. Carrying Powell,Etan Thomas, Armstrong etc is pathetic. They need to stop being cheap and go over the luxury tax and give themselves a better chance. The Bulls wore us out with their depth and press defense. get some hard working rebounders and defenders coming off the bench for next season. and get a starting Center. Still trying to figure out how Rick clueless Sund gave up a 1st rounder and Jordan Crawford for Hinrich. Kirk is a good hard nose player but we overpayed for him big time. JC2 could fo been a chepa replacement for JC1 next year and we could of used money on adding more depth. We need the team sold and if not they need to fire Sund and get someone in here that knows how to build a team. Everyone can point fingers at players but fact of the matter is this season falls on ownership for not adding anything worthwhile last offseason while the other teams all improved.

Atlanta your beating yourself up too much. You now have two starting pg, you have a coach that knows what he is doing. You know to move Horford to the pf position and get rid of Williams and Crawford. Use Hinrich to be the swing guard rather than Crawford, get a true center, build a bench and make Josh Smith watch how effective he is near the basket. Win 55 games next year and be one of the three top teams in the East. Go play some golf guys, this can be a start….

I wish someone would pay me big bucks to just stand there with my arms folded while I watch my team crumble. When Josh Smith is standing 25 feet from the basket and not moving at all on both offense and defense for 10 straight posessions, the coach needs to scream at him and sit his a** down. Where was Damien, he is the only guy who can come in and play high energy defense to try and stop a big run. So disappointed in Coach LD for just standing and watching. Fire Marvin, pay someone $8 million a year to take JJ off your hands and build around Teague and Horford. J Smoothe needs to watch the tape of last nights game to see what a lazy waste of incredible athletic and basketball ability he is.

Dre at 10:02 a.m. – well stated.

Obviously JJ is overpaid, but we were hamstrung on that and had to pull the trigger. Is he a superstar? No. Does he exude intensity? Certainly not. But he is a very, very good player and without him we wouldn’t be in the playoffs. Period.

There isn’t some endless well of NBA talent into which every team can just throw money and pull up a superstar. You have to take you can get and do what you can with it.

Yes, last night was disappointing. But we showed a lot of heart this postseason. We beat down a team who humiliated us in historic fashion last year. We then played the team with the BEST RECORD IN THE NBA and took it to them hard for five games. We finally slipped a bit, and the Bulls finally played out of their minds. They’re a better team. That’s why they were given the top seed.

Horford’s postseason performance was very disappointing, but it’s absurd to start crapping on him. He’s a tremendous player and we would be fools to trade him away. It’s a shame about Jordan Crawford, and that may sting for a while. But we raised some eyebrows this postseason (finally for a good reason), won big games on the road, made a statement, and discovered we have a legit PG in Teague. The entire country (myself included) fully expected us to get trounced again by Orlando. Look what we did instead.

I understand some of the frustrations, but let’s cut the guys a break here.

I meant to say (in my prior post) that the Hawks have never won more than one series in a single post-season since they moved to Atlanta for the ‘68-69 season. Obviously, the franchise has been in the NBA far longer than that.

And Jason, I could not agree with your comment any more. The NBA (and NHL, and soon the MLB) playoffs are way too long, and too many mediocre teams get in. How often does a team seeded lower than 4th make it to the finals? The answer shows that only four teams per conference, at most, should be in the playoffs. I’d rather see three divisions in each league, with the three division winners and one wild card in the playoffs.

Most of you bloggers are really retarded by the way … negativity feeds negativity. I guess the Hawks back in the 90’s were crappy too b/c they never got past the second round. Give me a freaking break. Never does it fail that some idiot gets on here and say “Hawks should have taken Chris Paul” or we overpaid for JJ. JJ earned his money … he came to a team that SUCKED when nobody else wanted to come here and he brought this team up from below the ground and put them on the map. We gave him the money b/c he earned it and b/c there was nobody better at that point to go out and get. I don’t like Marvin now either BUT it was split 50/50 on who the Hawks should’ve picked back in 0405. IF we had received Chris Paul, i guaran-fing-tee you we wouldn’t have Al Horford or possibly joe johnson. Chris Paul hasn’t led his hornets to the finals either, so that point is null. We now have two potentially great point guards, a great power forward, still great center (maybe out of position but he’s still an all-star at his position), & a huge pick up of Jamal off the bench. Oh, and that guy Joe Johnson. Stop blasting the team and making excuses. Half of you don’t even know what the heck you’re talking about.

Plan and simple, if Josh Smith can be moved, DO IT. I said it last off-season and I am definitely sure, if I ever had any doubts. He’s a poster child for high schoolers not being able to enter the draft w/o at least 2 years in college.

Enough of the stupid Josh Smith trade talk. He and Teague are the only ones who showed any desire to compete. QUIT SMOKING THAT METH WITH THE CHRIS KAMAN BS, Check it. Almost 12 mill a year for 12.4 ppg and 7 rebounds. You need to blow that ish out before you pop a vessel and bust a lung. Horford playing out of position gives you better stats (15.4 ppg and 9 rbs for half his pay. @ 5.44 mill a year. Bynum is young but almost 14 mill a year for 11.4 ppg and 9.4 rbs, Gasol gets 17.8 mill a year. GTFO !! There is only 1 DOMINANT BIG MAN who will possibly be AVAILABLE A YEAR FROM NOW, that would be DWIGHT. At 16.6 mill a year. THE BIGGEST GLARING SALARY ISSUES ARE Heinrich and Crawford. At 11 AN 10 MILLION a YEAR. Crawford avg 14.2 ppg and 3.2 asst. But in his defense, at least he was recognized as the 6 MAN OF THE YEAR only a year ago so he still has a little upside. But Heinrich who is OK only as a role player, avg 10.2 ppg and 4 asst Both offering no more than minimal production for HUGE salaries. OF COURSE MARVIN has not proved to be WORTH the 7.2 MILL A YEAR he is getting. There is 27 mill right there that could be possibly better spent. If anything deal with that. So guess what? You better START appreciating AL JOE AND JOSH. Because unless you’re talking Durant, Rose, Kobe,Wade, Lebron, Dirk, P.Gasol, the Celts aging 3 the Spurs aging 3 or Dwight, IT’S ALL JUST WISHFUL THINKING OR A FANTASY CAUSE it won’t make any SENSE and IT AIN’T GONNA HAPPEN.

I saw an interview where Josh Smith said that the fans that boo him don’t know the game of basketball. He obviously doesn’t know what he’s talking about because he never plays to his strengths and when he’s not a dominant defensive stopper, what’s the point of having him on the floor? He played his best game around the rim, yet you see so many plays ending with him taking a long jumper. Iso Joe and Iso Crawford causes everyone else to just stand around and watch.

The Hawks played their best basketball of this series in the first quarter of game 1 when the ball was moving freely and they forced chicago to make mistakes on both ends of the floor. Ever since then, it’s been an inevitable and recognizable downhill journey.

Quit whining!!! Though the loss was disappointing, the Hawks have nothing to be ashame of.
This was a STEP in the RIGHT direction. They finished as the fifth or sixth best team in the playoffs. Even though their weaknesses were exposed, they proved to be a worthy competitor. The coaching seemed questionable. A more vocal Coach who calls plays and makes adjustments is what is needed and could have made a difference. Somebody who knows how to command leadership and lobby for foul calls from the referees would really help also. THE HAWKS are STILL a YOUNG TEAM with a lot of POTENTIAL.

Who can they realistically sign? All the players off limits would be guys like: Durant, Rose, Wade, Lebron, Dirk, Duncan, Perkins, B Roy, Paul, Anthony, Granger, Yao, Stoudemire, the Celts aging 3. You can forget about DWIGHT unless he is willing to take a pay cut just to play for his home team. Other then that, there is no other dominant Big man in the NBA. I don’t think they want to gamble on a 1 year risk with the declining Shaq who at 1.4 mill a year produced only 9.4 ppg and 4 rbs. He is cheap now and MIGHT possibly be effective in spurts. Depending on his health and how he is used. I guess this is what the Celts thought but it did’nt work. (PERKINS MOVE DUMB) So much for that. But do you really think Bumbling Bynum is worth almost 14 mill for 11.3 ppg and 9.4 rbs Or if you had your heart set on KAVEMAN Chris Kaman you’ll get a miserable 12.4 ppg and 7 rbs NOT!!!
Btw P.Gasol makes 18 mill a year so forget the crazy trade talk and be realistic

Joe, Josh Teague and Al are the best that ATL has to offer. For a lot of you, this may not be good enough but what can they do? Joe got fair market value for his talent at the time. Also Lebron and Wade took pay cuts and restructured their deals so that they could make a championship run.

True enough Marvin has not proven to be worth his draft status and contract of 7.2 mill a year for 10.4 ppg and 4 rbs but being only 24 and coming from a program like the Tarheels, they might give him at least another year to develop unless they grab a good free agent but who will accept him in a trade and who worth anything could they get in return? Still don’t over look the fact that Heinrich makes 9 mill a year and only produces a feeble 10.4 ppg and 4 asst. So he is not the answer at point guard or shooting guard because that is about as good as it gets for him check his career avg. Then there is Crawford making 10 mill a year giving them 14.2 ppg and 3.2 asst. Not great either but in his defense at least he earned 6 MAN OF THE YEAR only a YEAR AGO. So even though he disappeared in the playoffs this year, hopefully he still has some upside left. There is not much ability or money to do much of anything else unless you drop all 3 players and hope to sign 1 elite player (Howard) with the money from all 3. Certain contracts won’t allow this without payoffs. Which is a very unlikely scenario. There is no one in the draft that can help immediately so they are left to develop the young talent that they have or look for help overseas. Anything else would be a senseless regression There it is.
