An example of the Hawks' tenacious D in Game 5. (Photo courtesy of the Orlando Sentinel)
After Game 4, a really dumb guy — OK, yours truly — told the Hawks’ PR folks: “Nothing surprises me about your team, but I’d be surprised if you lost this series.”
I stand by that statement, at least for the next couple of hours.
I think the Hawks will win tonight. Others don’t. They believe that Game 5 was the truer measure of these teams than the first four games, which doesn’t make a lot of sense to this reporter. (Four games were an aberration, but one game reflects the truth?) But I have been known to be wrong.
I wasn’t shocked by what happened Tuesday. The Hawks aren’t very good when they’re not very interested, and they played in the manner of a team that knew it had three chances to win once.
“It would have been a huge step for us a ballclub,” Hawks coach Larry Drew said, speaking moments ago. “We’d never been in that situation before, at least not since I’ve been here. It was unfamiliar territory for us.”
Now the Hawks are back at Philips Arena, the series again theirs to take, and there’s somewhat more pressure on them than there was two days ago. Lose tonight and they’d be in position to become only the ninth NBA club ever to waste a 3-1 lead. Which would, even by Hawks standards, be a major reversal.
But let’s accentuate the positive. If the Hawks win tonight — and I say they will — they’ll have taken a series almost nobody believed they could win. They’ll be headed for Chicago and Round 2. They’ll need to apologize to no one.
And with that, the figurative floor is open for questions, comments and NFL draft updates. (Kidding about that last part. It’s hard enough for me to keep track of any one thing.) I’ll be here until the Hawks have celebrated. Or, failing that, until they’ve gotten all glum. Join me, won’t you?
As ever, I thank you in advance.

Hawks 23, Orlando 18. One quarter gone.
Nothing wrong with that period.

Hawks up 30-24, 8:41 left in Half No. 1. The Magic look no different than in the first four games. They’ve hit only one 3-pointer.

Mark, how realistic is it that the Hawks can get past Chicago, in your opinion? I am still dumbfounded that they have never been past the second round, even with those amazing teams from the 80’s and early 90’s.

It’s possible, Steve. But Chicago’s a lot better than the Magic.
And this series isn’t over.

Julio jones is not worth drafting up for. Falcons should stay put. AJ Green will be a difference maker, Jones will be out of the league in 6 years

Neither team doing anything now. Hawks ahead by nine, 4:24 in the half.
Hawks have missed 25 of 38. Magic have missed 14 of 26.

This is ridiculous and almost embarrassing…10 point lead then miss 4 shots in a row…no killer instinct…com’ on Hawks. And Joe can’t keep deferring to Jamal because Jamal seems to think he’s at the carnival.–just jacking em up!

1st, 2nd, 4th this year. 1st and 4th next year. For Michael Jenkins 2.0. This is as mad as I’ve been at a Falcons draft… and that takes something.

Watching the game with my two daughters….During the last 3 minutes of the 1st half, they observe J Stoop’s turnovers, bad shots, no hustle play and one asks….but daddy you say he gets paid to play this bad? the other “Can’t the coach sit his butt on the bench?”

OK, I’ve watched the 1st half. Josh has 2 dunks; 1 off-balance luck shot; 2 successful free throws; and how many missed shots out of his 2-foot range? I would think at least 6, and a couple of bonehead turnovers. This guy is a joke!!!!
