Riddle of the UGA locker-room theft solved by … Facebook?

"We're looking for players who can steal the ball. Oops, wrong word." (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)

"You recruits: I'd better not see this picture posted on Facebook." (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)

As reported by esteemed colleague Chip Towers, three arrests have been made in the theft of iPhones and iPods from Georgia’s locker room. One of those arrested is a football recruits for the year 2012

A gentle suggestion: Were I Georgia, I would no longer recruit that player.

This isn’t to prejudge guilt or innocence as defined by our legal system. Due process will take care of that. But Towers quotes UGA police chief Jimmy Williamson as saying of his investigation: “Facebook is always a big help.”

(And this works … how? Jimmy Williamson sends a suspect a “friend” request?)

If I’m Mark Richt, my new list of  guidelines for pursuing football talent would read thusly:

Rule No. 1: Do not recruit anyone who might have gotten arrested due to something posted on Facebook.

Rules No. 2-10: See Rule No. 1.

UGA attracts thugs like a magnet.

But we’ve known that for years.

DawginLex:

When has any of that mattered? UGA frequently has the better players, better coach, and/or better record… and UGA STILL loses to Florida like it’s going out of style. Florida stomps Georgia no matter who the coach is. Even Ron Zook went 2-1 against Richt and UGA. Richt didn’t finally beat Zook until the year Zook got fired, and even then it was only a 31-24 win.

You say you don’t see any domination? Try this: In the last decade, in the Big 3 sports of football, basketball, and baseball, Florida is 8-2 (football), 16-5 (basketball), and 21-11 (baseball), or 45-18 against Georgia. I don’t know about your definition of domination, but here in the real world, that’s it.

UF beats UGA like they stole something from the Gator locker room.

Dawglex, you can’t figure out that beating UGA year after year in J’ville isn’t domination. Last year was called UGA’s best chance to win and you still couldn’t pull it off. Year after Year UGA fans show up with great hopes and go home dissappointed, drunk and miserable. It’s my favorite time of the year.

Avion Lawrence: you do not seem to know much about this topic given our record. I am sure you would’ve characterized the captain of the Titanic as a fine man who just didn’t miss all the icebergs 100% of the time. When you get Mark’s richt out of your mouth, maybe you will realize that no one expects every single player to be perfect, but UGA under Richt has a poor graduation rate, a high arrest rate, and in case you missed it, they’re losing a lot of games on the field, too. That’s compared to the SEC and the NCAA.

For gators trolling on this blog I have two words: Jabar Gaffney. Gators not only support locker room thieves, they coddle and revere them.

Gators just haven’t been caught yet. The Gainesville PD is a lot more player-friendly than the cops in Athens.

Yes we have had some arrests in the past…

Some arrests? How about 45 in the last three years. That goes well beyond “some.” It’s why UGA is the perennial winner of the Fulmer/Richt Cup.

There’s a reason why UGA is known worldwide as The Cesspool of the South.

If Damon Evans was a Gator AD in Gainesville the panties would have been orange, not red, and he’d still be working. The cops in Georgia are anti-bulldog and anti-black.

Shows just how DUMB this recruit was. If he waited until he made the team – he could have stolen MUCH MORE.

In all seriousness though, you have to wonder just how much background checking goes into a recruit (or even more telling, how much a bad background is ignored by the school!)

DeputyDawg,
The grass is always greener huh? Kirby Smart wouldn’t put up with this crap. Arrests would drop to 0, and grad rate would be 100%? Who else do you have in mind. Richt didn’t forget how to coach, and being a good christian man doesn’t mean he’s soft on his players. We don’t know everything he does behind closed doors.

No, I would say his 96-34 record with two SEC titles makes him a good coach. Maybe we should have a couple more but those things don’t grow on trees. I’ll still take my chances with Richt.

No way Spurrier would ever coach UGA. He still hates them from his playing days. The guy holds a grudge like no one else. He’ll retire from South Carolina in a few years and play golf full-time.

GAINESVILLE — Jabar Gaffney has caught more passes than any freshman receiver in Florida history, but not enough, apparently, to make people forget.

Gaffney continues to pay the price for a nearly year-old indiscretion, stealing jewelry and cash from the UF locker room in December.

Didn’t Carver Coach McGee “ban” Richt from recruiting there a couple years back because they pulled a QB scholarship? I wonder if this is an indication of how McGee runs his ship or do you think he’s been nurturing some bad blood between the University and his players? McGee’s an Auburn man, isn’t he?

McGee still has a ton of bad blood with UGA so he sent these 3 up there to loot the locker rooms, they got caught so he had to boot em off the team so nobody would catch on. You’re a genius to figure that out CarverClass!
