UGA’s hoops epitaph: It gave itself a chance but lost anyway

The story of a season. (AP photo)

It was both the end of the road and the story of the season. (AP photo)

Charlotte — “Losing in the tournament,” Mark Fox said, his voice a rasp as Friday night became Saturday morning, “there should be no shame in that.” There shouldn’t, and there isn’t. You could even describe the presence of Georgia in the NCAA tournament as a breakthrough. And yet …

The season that ended here didn’t feel quite that emphatic. Georgia won 21 games and made the Big Dance, yes. It also lost 12 games and was gone from the NCAA after 40 minutes that could stand as the season in miniature.

The Bulldogs got what they wanted against Washington — the game, the pace, the score. They just couldn’t win it. “Yes,” said Fox, the Georgia coach, “that was frustrating.”

Two years ago it was possible to wonder if the Bulldogs would ever again grace the only tournament that matters. That they made it in their second try under Fox says much about this coach, and in a different era we would look on Georgia and foresee, to borrow from the late Al McGuire, only seashells and balloons. But we live in a colder time, where this season’s team can bear little resemblance to next’s.

There’s a chance we might have watched one of the more talented Bulldog assemblages come and go without registering even one NCAA tournament win. Not since the early ’80s, when Dominique Wilkins and Vern Fleming worked in tandem, has Georgia had a duo as gifted as Trey Thompkins and Travis Leslie, but what are the chances we’ll see either or both of these juniors play another collegiate minute?

Said Fox: “They could come back and we could have a great team. They could leave and we could have a young team. One could stay and one could go.”

Fox has signed Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, a shooting guard from Greenville High who should become Georgia’s first McDonald’s All-American recruit since Carlos Strong in 1992. (Louis Williams was a McDonald’s All-American but didn’t enroll; Damien Wilkins was, but arrived as a transfer.) Put Caldwell-Pope alongside Thompkins and Leslie and you’d have a Top 10 team. But the probability is that Thompkins will leave, and with him would go any hope of such a lofty ranking.

Georgia left so many winnable games on the table this season they needed an extra leaf to accommodate them all. Friday’s was just the last of a series. The Bulldogs led by seven in the first half, saw Washington tie it at the break, fell behind by 10 with 12 1/2 minutes left and still trailed by eight with 36 seconds remaining. But they cut it to two and had a chance to tie on Leslie’s fling off a deflection at the buzzer.

Afterward Thompkins didn’t care to ponder missed opportunities. “We gave it every shot we had,” he said. And then: “I don’t regret anything. We’re a tough bunch.”

But they weren’t tough or clever enough to turn a good season into something more. Big men Jeremy Price and Chris Barnes were inconsistent. Guards Gerald Robinson Jr. and Dustin Ware were too much alike — neither a true point guard, neither a knockdown shooter. And there was nothing beyond Barnes in the way of depth. Said Fox after Georgia’s full-tilt rally that fell one basket short: “We’re just not deep enough to play that way all the time.”

Georgia scored 65 points against Washington; Thompkins and Leslie accounted for 38 of those. And now their partnership could end after three seasons, and if it does, Fox will have a hard time finding a starting five, let alone filling out his bench.

And that’s why college basketball has become such an ephemeral thing: You must win big when the opportunity arises, for next season holds no guarantee. (Indeed, who’s to say Caldwell-Pope mightn’t be a one-and-done?)

There was no dishonor in anything Georgia did this season: Its losses were all close, all to worthy opponents. But it would be wrong to suggest there wasn’t disappointment. The Bulldogs gave themselves a chance against Washington, same as they’d given themselves a chance against everybody. Chances, alas, aren’t the same as victories.

I just got back from the game. We coulda, shoulda won, but that has been the story all season. Too little too late in the last minute and 30 seconds. Where was the sense of urgency in the team down the stretch. Fox needs to learn to Finish the Drill, just like Richt. Leslie isn’t ready for the NBA, he needs another year to develop. Hope Thompkins stays but i doubt he will

Just home from the game. Could have won, but sitll proud of the team. That offensive interference call was bogus and momentum shifted from that point on (we had 4 trips in a row with no points)…

Hope Coach Fox stays

Disappointing. Washington was the 3rd or 4th best team in a bad Pac-10 and yet they were clearly the better team tonight. That should tell us something about where UGA is.

But a tough loss? Not really. More like a tough season. This team had more talent and they never could put it together consistently.

Robinson gets way too much grief… As you pointed out, he’s playing out of position. Paired with the right type of point guard, he could make a nice complimentary scorer. He could give you offense in bunches as a 6th man in a 3 guard set. Ware is more perplexing, he needs lot of picks or a solid compliment in a two man game where you screen to get him looks…

I’ll say it again, they need a guard who does need to shoot as much as they hand the ball and gets them in the offense deeper than crossing half court and immediately getting the ball out of their hand and not breaking down a defense… Georgia is horrible at that….

It was really nice to see GA basketball on the national radar after such a long time.
I doubt either Thompkins or Leslie stay. AS you said Mark, if they both stay, we’re looking at a top 10, top 20 team for sure. But how many times have we seen superstar talent leave only for the remaining team along with newcomers gel into a true team? Re: The year after Dominique Wilkins left.

I thought there was too much standing around when rebounds were available. There was a point with less than two minutes left in the game when a Washington player missed a layup and one Huskie went after and put the ball in the basket while three GA players were just standing there watching under the rim. Rodman taught us rebounding is more about ‘want to’, drive and passion more than any skill set. I didn’t see the stats but they had to outrebound us tonight.
Also too much passing back and forth at the perimeter instead of taking it to the basket until the shot clock ran down to seven seconds and a wild shot was thrown up to beat the buzzer.

We looked discombobulated but I am a big Mark Fox fan. Here’s hoping that he doesn’t use the program as a stepping stone preferring to build something of substance here.

If those two come back next year, you will have what GT and most ball clubs don’t have in this era, high-caliber seniors. I think the trick in these times is to recruit guys who aren’t good enough to be NBA, but good enough to have great college careers and stick around as seniors. A baseball analogy: you never hear baseball players talk about ‘winning’ the world series during the season. They always talk about ‘playing’ in the WS. The NCAA tourney is like that.

Just as I have consistently tried to get you to see the bigger picture related to UGA Bbal (a good season, nothing more, nothing less – Mark Fox – a good coach, nothing more nothing less), let me get on record for next year.

Thompkins will leave – even if Leslie returns, Leslie will continue to be, just like Robinson, a great athlete is plays backetball, not a great basketball player. Ware is not a nationally competitive point guard. The highly touted youngster will either live up to his billing and be a “one and down” or he will not. One of the most glarind failures of the coaching staff was not developing any type of bench strength this year – remember the bench was largely recruting by this staff – the starters by Dennis Felton. If the bench strength is misisng because the bench is not SEC caliber, then the coaching staff has no one to blame but themselves.

Too much priority on “ESPN 10 Ten Plays” and too little priority on team ball from Leslie and Robinsion – neither can lead a TEAM.

UGA will take a step back next year in wins. The sports media will scratch their heads and wonder, “what’s wrong?” – toward the end of the season this same media will begin to write and post – Mark Fox is surely not on any hot seat but if next year does not improve, the following year will be important to Fox.

And that will be hogwash – Mark Fox is a good, not great coach this year and will be the same good coach next year and the next.

If I am wrong and UGA exceeds this year’s win total next year, then Mark Fox will become a hot commodity for teams looking for a new coach. UGA has the money to keep Fox around but does not have the basketball culture to do so. Schools with that culture, money and perception can take Fox from UGA.

The Dawgs just don’t have the depth. After Leslie and Thompkins, the rest of the supporting cast is just mediocre. If they had something (anything) off of the bench, they could play at a much higher level for 40 minutes. Oh well, at least you made the dance. Nothing to be ashamed of considering the state of the program just a couple of years ago.

The dawgs lose to the Dawgs…It could have gone either way..each team has its talented players and each University should be proud of them. I was more worried when the dawgs and the Dawgs faced off in the Women’s College Softball World Series…The NCAA promotes an even playing field and seems to have acheived it- Two Powerful Conferences, the same two Universities so far apart, playng “for all the marbles” in such different sports really displays the American Spirit at its best…No shame in a loss, no gloating in a win…Hats off to all the atheletes…better, more glorious days ahead for all . Georgia played a good game but it was so frustrating to see the DAWGS have to work so hard to get a shot compared to Washington. Our offense was pushed so far out from the basket, and our gurards pick up the dribble too soon. We end up having to make tough passes and committing way too many turnovers. Having Price in the first half would have made a big difference. Missed too many easy shots around the basket in the first half. In the secon half we just gave them too many easy offensive rebounts and put-back. Didn’t rebound as well and get after loose balls. It will be interesting to see what happens next year.

If Thompkins is smart he will stay at Georgia. He is NOT NBA ready. I am an 22 year NBA season tix holder and I see a soft player who is out of shape. His game, his maturity and most of all his conditioning and competitive fire are substandard from a professional standpoint. He will get his lunch handed to him nightly by the likes of Dwight Howard, Kevin Garnett, Tim Duncan, Al Hortford, Pau Gasol, Danilo Galinari, Dirk Nowitzi, David West, Lamarcus Aldridge, etc.

As for Leslie, he MAY be a second rounder and will be in the D league playing in BFE or Europe.

UGA’s ouster was a Cliff’s Notes version of their season… competitive, but lots of dumb plays, turnovers, bad shots, and a close and frustrating loss of a winnable game. If the two players mentioned above stay at UGA and really dedicate themselves- and they get a decent PG- they have a chance to grow and learn and maybe in some of those close games next year.

dawgerbrown,

Great point. I was sickened by the way Fox allowed UW to press us for essentially the entire second half without coming back with some pressure himself. I understand wanting to control tempo, but UGA did that and still lost the damn game. The pressure UW put on UGA in the second half was the key in UGA not being able to get Thompkins good looks down low as he spent to much time helping push the ball upcourt. That imo is a coaching issue with Fox, seems very hesitant if not slow to make in game adjustments.

You hoped it wouldn’t happen. You thought it very well could. It did. Now, the Georgia Bulldog basketball program that has been on a two year rise will face some big obstacles. If Thompkins and Leslie both leave, Fox will be left with tons of youth and the program will inevitably take a step or two backward.

Fox has done a great job for the last two seasons in bringing this team along and building a solid foundation from the mess they were as Felton departed Athens. One thing fans cannot deny. Most of the talent Fox has had to work with was a product of Felton’s recruiting.

Fox has to go out and sell the program to the future talent that could take Georgia to the next level. If he can do that, he will be building something. If he doesn’t, Georgia fans will have to wait another 10 or so years for a team of consequence.

Unlike his predecessors, I believe Fox can take this team to the next level given time. McGarrity and UGA need to make a long term commitment to Fox, so he can do his job.

As for those who see simple one and done for the “Tourney”, the only thing that matters in the NCAA is who wins the finals. As a Georgia fan, you have to look at the big picture. 34 teams…some very good got bounced in the first round; and let’s be honest, Georgia wasn’t going to win a National Title this year.

Maybe UGA will win a tournament game someday—it just won’t be soon.

Good season for the Dawgs. Fox still can’t play the style he wants, because he doesn’t have enough players. Someone mentioned that not having enough players is Fox’s fault. He should have recruited better. Well, he has to build the brand name of UGA before he can recruit better. Going to the tourney was big in that regard. Give Fox some time and I think UGA will see great results.

A great year — for the Dawgs; something to build on if another prime recruit can be had; Thompson is gone, but could use another year to improve; then again, if he didn’t improve, he’d be a second rounder next year so should take the money now; if Leslie goes, he’s in the CBA in a year; as someone has already said, he’s a great athlete playing basketball; I like Fox and hope UGA extends his contract; but can any of you that really knows the game say that the Dawgs were an improved team from Jan.1 to now; I couldn’t see it; assuming Thompson & Lesle both go, next year will be a better indicator of how good a coach Fox is, for he will have a very different team than is does now.

I watched the game last night and UGA had a chance for a good shot at the buzzer. But the Washington defender made a play on the ball and that was that.

Give Washington credit, they were quick and played defense by moving their feet. We do not see much of that anymore in college basketball. A tip of the hat to the Washington coach. Good job.

Fox had a damn good year. Georgia basketball was at the botton and Fox has brought them credibility in just two seasons. Good job.

Going forward you UGA grads really need to fill Stegeman for the games like you did for the last 8 or 10 games this season.

The future of Georgia basketball really looks good.

How is losing to the favored team proof that we should not be there? Are you kidding me? So Louisville should not have gotten an invite either I guess? Bunch of igniters all you are…

Proud of the team and disagree with Lowcountry on this one – Fox stuck to the game plan and the team executed it well – keeping htem in the game all the way. No way we needed to get into a press situtation against them, we don’t have the depth – they could have run us off the court. Was very disappointed in the dunk put back being called offensive interference – the momentum of the game changed after that (we had 4 trips in a row with no points)….

Anyway – to all of you who feel vindicated because UGA lost – you’re not as smart as you think. Ask a rational basketball person about UGA and they will tell you UGA most indeed deserved to be in the tournament, and validated it with they way they played against Washington.

Thank you to the other programs fans that actually have class, to the others, nobody really cares what you think. The most serious problem UGA had/has is the bench. As pointed out by Brock 28-0 in bench points. It only proves that depth is more important then most fans understand. UW likes to run cause they can play 10 people, they like to press because of depth, the reason UGA didn’t dribble or pass through the press is because it would have worn them out quicker, they played a good game against the type of team that was a terrible matchup for them. Anyways, UGA can and will be good if Fox can recruit. Nobody should have expected him to build the bench right away with the way the program was. I’ve said it before, if he recruits well these next 2-3 years then UGA will be relevant in basketball for as long as he stays. If not, then hell be gone and the program will get as bad if not worse than it was under Felton. Can’t wait to what Thompkins and Leslie do. Go DAWGS!!

Great game Dawgs of GA! The Dawgs of WA had to pick up their game in the second half in order to finally get a sliver of a lead to hold you all off! Where IT (Isaiah Thomas) goes, UW goes. Mark, I take issue that this team underachieved. In your words it had the most talented duo since Wilkens and Fleming. Thompkins is a special player but Leslie isn’t quite there yet. He is an incredible athlete and can perform spectacular dunks in 2 on 1 situations, but he is not a consistent scorer or creator against a half court defense. Mark Fox got the most out of this team and we should be proud of what he is building.

Also, it takes a lot more than two players to have a complete basketball team… and the reality is this was a flawed team all year that didn’t have a bench or a back court that could contribute consistently. The fact is this team as a whole can’t even come close to comparing to Harrick’s team in 2003, with Rashard Wright, Ezra Williams, Steven Thomas, Jarvis Hayes and Jonas Hayes…. not to mention key contributors like Chris Daniels, Fred Gibson and Damien Wilkins.

Jimmy Chitwood

March 19th, 2011

Old habits are hard to break…and unfortunately Trey and Travis still are Liabilities on defense. Sure Trey dropped 20+…but he also constantly leave Jeremy in bad defensive situations, and leaves Jeremy to do all of the dirty work. Travis, inexplicably did not dive for that loose ball in the 2nd half, and constantly leaves his man or spot in the zone to “Get out” on the break early. These types of defensive efforts in the 2nd half killed the Dawgs, along with our inability of the guards to get us in to our early offense and Triangle sets.

Having said all of this, I still think this team played hard and came a long way…and the program is in good hands with Fox. But…I do agree, this team did underachieve to a small degree. Thornton should have got more time…I hope he is ready to play next year.

[...] Fox has signed Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, a shooting guard from Greenville High who should become Georgia’s first McDonald’s All-American recruit since Carlos Strong in 1992. (Louis Williams was a McDonald’s All-American but didn’t enroll; Damien Wilkins was but arrived as a transfer.) Put Caldwell-Pope alongside Thompkins and Leslie and you’d have a Top 10 team. But the probability is that Thompkins will leave, and with him would go any hope of such a lofty ranking. (AJC.com) [...]

UGA exits early — what a surprise. That’s what happens when you play street ball which results in 3x as many turnovers as the opposition. This has been the Dawgs MO all season. I’m left scratching my head as to why Fox couldn’t or wouldn’t correct the sloppy passing and ball handling — don’t they watch game film? Practice? If I was an opposing coach, UGA wouldn’t be a very hard team to prepare for. In the end, just like football, all the talent in the world won’t cover up a lack of fundamentals. It stinks that Fox and Co. made such a big deal about making the tournament and then showed up as the same old team we’ve seen blow game after game this season. Hope Fox gets a lot of thank you notes from other coaches because they gave an awful lot of games away as gifts.

Bradley, do you really know a good team when you see it? Georgia is/was not a good team, at best an average team. Why would a good team run their offensive sets from mid-court all night? The coach never made a change to move his bigs to the low post. You can not run half court offensive sets from mid court. Blocking out and help defense was terrible!! They did not look like a well coached or smart team.

Boise Dawg is exactly right about this team not comparing with the Harrick bunch, who were actually much tougher than this assemblage. Can you imagine that team blowing a 14 point lead to Alabama, for example? Having said this, the team showed more toughness than usual during the frantic comeback in the last minute, and anyone who suggests that Thompkins and Leslie played soft last night is either blind or otherwise was not watching the same game I saw. It was interesting to note that Clark Kellogg of CBS kept commenting that having seen this duo in person for the first time, both were excellent BASKETBALL players who were a lot better than he had thought. Jimmy Chitwood is right, I think, in saying that Thornton should have got more time this year. Heaven help us next year if Thornton is not vastly improved. Otherwise our bench pretty much sucks. Isaiah Thomas made Brantley look like a statue on at least two occasions, as he blew right on by him for easy layups. Robinson actually did pretty well on Isaiah when matched head to head. And for those that consistently “hate” on Robinson, consider that he is the major difference between this year’s team and last year’s team, and the difference in the two teams’ records is not coincidential.

We’ll be trading out Thompkins for Caldwell next year. Leslie isn’t going anywhere (if he listens to the right people) as he’d be at best a 2nd round pick. He has no position in the NBA at this point. Does not have the handle or the shot to play the 2.

Im so sick of hearing people say that Felton is responsible for getting this team this far! Fox is an excellent coach that will do way better with his players than Feltons squad! Uga fans should be excited about the future!

Leadership comes form the top. If your 2 main programs, basketball and football, are a combined 3-16 against top ranked teams, look to leadership. Is Georgia’s spending in line, % wise, with other top programs? No, Forbes found Georgia was spending 25% as opposed to 42%. You have McGarity spending minimums on coaching staffs, attracting mediocre talent (Will Friend????), and investing minimums in facilities (we all remember the trailers from last season). Gators get Weis, Georgia gets Bobo.

Fox may be a great players coach, but his coaching ability in big-time games so far in his time with UGA has been lacking. It seems like he can’t draw up an offensive scheme against anybody with a halfway decent defense, and his teams don’t give 100 percent defensive effort or look lost on defense.

We’ll see how god or bad he is if he is ever able to put together his own roster with enough depth to play the style he wants.

Out here in the upper left corner,, there was precious little information about Georgia before the game. One thing that impressed me was how the Georgia Dawgs owned the paint– those are some WIDE bodies! THe Huskies have never struggled as much for rebounds all season.

If you had bench, that game would have gone the other way, IMO.

My question is this: what positions are Thompkins and Leslie going to play in the League?????
Thompkins is not strong enough for a PF and not quick enough for SF. Leslie is a SG playing SF in college. He can’t dribble, especially with the left. Who wants a SG that can’t dribble? If they both take huge strides this off season, they could get much better. I think our whole team is lacking the “it” factor of winning tough, close games. I don’t know if you can teach that. I am hoping everyone comes back and gets better, and hopefully learn how to win the big/close ones. I am hopeful!!! Fox seems to be a good one.

Id like to see UGA just finish one single game without running out of timeouts. 8 minutes to go and you have one time out left! There is a TV timeout every four minutes, and you get 5 time outs for the game! So technically you get 13 timeouts per game and you only have 1 with 8 minutes to go?!? Brilliant.

You know what I think is funny…fans of other teams coming on a blog about the dawgs just to spew their miserable crap….people that try to make others feel bad to make themselves feel better are pathetic. Only one team is going to be the champion and everyone else is going to be disappointed. The basketball program at UGA had a very good year and can build from that….babysteps. The power if the SEC East ? Vandy,UGA,UT and KY….Perhaps the SEC should just have games of horse to select the teams that go to the big show. UGA and UT didn’t deserve to be at the Dance.

Well considering Kentucky just beat W. Virginia to go to the sweet 16 and georgia beat them once this season…i’d say they did deserve it. They didn’t have all the components (deep bench for one) to win it all this year….but it was a good start. Get over yourself.

Georgia gone after 1st game. No surprise here.

Can we have a do over and take the team that went 12-4 in conference, 4-2 against the east, and swept Georgia twice in the last week?

With the loss Georgia ends the season 3-10 against the RPI top 50 and 5-12 against the RPI top 100. They never should have been in the dance to begin with.

Once again fox’s shows he can’t make adjustments during a game. He is exactly like Richt. Neither have a clue on how to make adjustments, and both get out coached time and time again. Fox doesn’t know how to beat a press and teams have been pressing UGA in every game when they get a lead. Yet, all Fox does is stand there with his arms crossed and watch as Robinson&Ware play out of control and turn the ball over time and time again. This program is going nowhere with this coach. Next year will be a losing season in the SEC, and then you will hear all the uneducated UGA fans start to complain about this coach. After Leslie,Thompkins, Price, and Barnes are gone, this team will look like a high school team. THey will still have the 2 inconsistent guards, and nobody else. This coach has not recruited any talented players in 2 years, except for the one player coming in next year. Only problem is he is a shooting guard, which want help UGA in the paint. No threat of a big man to score inside, will =a disaster next year. Then, after next year, Ware&Robinson will be gone, and that will leave UGA with one player. Doesn’t look to promising to me. For a coach to recruit one good player in two years of recruiting is not a good coach or a good job. But, that is what UGA has, a coach that can’t recruit, can’t coach, and has nothing but “Brain Farts” in crunch time of big games. Sound familar? Yes, UGA has 2 coaches like that. At least Fox would not have kicked a fieldgoal on 4th and inches in the bowl game.He does have more balls that Richt, he even calls timeouts with 2 seconds left in a game. What a joke UGA has become. The only coach in the whole UGA athletic dept. that had balls and didn’t choke in crunch time was the old gymnastics coach, and now she is gone. Wish she would come out of retirement and become the watergirl, and kick Richt’s pansy ass during a game when he acts like the soft ass he is.

Great season for a team devoid of serious talent after the top 2 players. Anyone that thinks this team was ‘talented’ clearly didn’t watch many games, is just clueless or just a UGA homer. Trey Thompkins is a very good player and very talented. Travis Leslie is an athlete that can create scores off rebounds and fast breaks but he’s not a great basketball talent (don’t get me wrong, he’s very good and I pray he comes back next year but for a guard, he cannot shoot). Gerald Robinson is a human turnover and Dustin Ware, who is the best shooter on the team, simply cannot create a shot…he has to be wide open to knock anything down. And after those 4 there is a HUGE dropoff in talent…Jeremy Price was solid against terrible competition and just AWFUL against good competition. After that you have a bunch of guys that take up space and produced virtually nothing.

What Mark Fox did with this bunch is absolutely remarkable and Georgia fans should be very thankful that he’s there. He’s recruiting solidly and has things going in the right direction (when he was hired no one in their right mind thought the Dawgs would make the tourney in only his 2nd year). This was a great year given that Fox had to play with essentially 4 guys that were SEC-caliber players and with only 7 guys that contributed anything at all.

And for those crying about UGA ‘pressuring’, you have no idea what you’re talking about. UGA doesn’t have the players to do that. You can’t play a pressuring up-tempo game for 40 minutes when you only have 7 players that you trust to play. And if you think that UGA playing those guys at the end of the bench is a good idea, you’re out of your mind.

Great season Dawgs…Trey and Travis, please stay! And Julian Royal, come on over to Athens!

Don’t have a PG coming in, and we need one bad. We have a SG coming but, we need more outside shooters. Robinson played well at the beginning of the season and he disappeared the rest of the way. I think that the 2012 recruiting class is very important for Mark Fox in order to turn the corner and make UGA b ball program more relevant. The state is loaded with talent with players like Tony Parker, Jordan Price, Evan Nolte, Shaq Goodwin, to go along with the two guys from GA playing at Oak Hill Jordan Adams and Damien Wilson. And that is just to name a few. I am not sure how many we can sign this years but if we could get a couple of those guys then that will really set UGA basketball up for success. Maybe Adams, Wilson, and Price will want to follow each other since the play AAU ball together for years.

What do you guys think?

I’m sorry folks, but I’ve rarely seen such stupid play in my life. Our team might be talented, but the players are dumber than a box of rocks. Did you see those Washington players consistently sneaking around them and then dunking the ball at the goal? How bout the fake-outs that midget Isiah Thomas pulled on our team? We played only offense, absolutely no defense. I’m trying to give Fox as much credit as I can, but frankly I just don’t see a lot of coaching or basketball strategy on the court. UGA’s trademark: wait ’till next year…

Football and basketball as irrelevant as a picture of Billy Carter urinating on the runway with a bottleof Billy Beer in his other hand.

Just a sad and pathetic athletic program that has not won a BIG game in one of the revenue producing sports in over a quarter of a century—BIG games are those when you either win pr are close to winning one of those really BIG bowls that come after the LAST game of a season.

Was this necessary? First, say Ga deserves NCAA..then, say it lost its chance…I am not sure of this kind of reporting…maybe yellow journalism? and MB, i do know what YJ means…AJC is wasting its reputation….

Dawgs program is headed upwards. Glad to see Tech ousted Paul . He couldn’t get the job done with good talent. UK and UF are the 2 best SEC teams and are showing it . I still think the Big East flexes its muscle and wears the crown this year. Duke has a shot . UNC too young this year. Look out for SDSU to have a shot at the final four . Aztecs have talent.

Mark, two days in a row you wrote the same column. Premise = Fox is a good coach and did a good job. Substance = facts may or may not support that. He seems a nice guy and good basketball coach. His two seasons so far have been entirely with talent recruited by the prior (fired) coach. His team was picked to win SEC East this season and it did not. They showed a very consistent problem choking away leads at the end of games (some they lost, some they survived). Alabama should have had their NCAA spot (don’t get me started on “body of work” pablum nonsense). He may be a fine coach, but cannot tell from his “body of work” to date.

Next season Richt will echo Fox: “there should be no shame in that.” He’ll be talking about losing to SC in the second game, as SC goes on to win the East again.

As far as getting the game we wanted … we actually did for only a half. UW scored 40 second half points. That’s their pace, their game, not ours. They were just too fast for us.

We’ve come a long ways, but what we’ve been missing all season is real depth. We play well in the first half and in the last 5 minutes, but not for a full 40. But very good season still and a big step forward for the program.

Wow…never seen so much hand-wringing after Wash-UNC game over officials not getting clock time right…no one seemed to care about the officials in Wash-UGA game erroneously taking away basket from UGA…glad Wash lost…tired of seeing Isaiah Thomas’s father in the crowd…

As for UGA…what can you say…they lived up to expectations…heaven forbid a UGA team ever exceed them.

If you call Chris Barnes DEPTH, then you dont know what the word means! This guy is GARBAGE! AGAIN, GARBAGE!! He played 21 minutes because Price got into foul trouble AND SCORED ZERO! ZERO! POINTS! Hell he could’nt even hit the rim on his only 2 foul shots! Mark Fox is a very young coach, but a dang good one but i would have left Price in in the 2nd half untill he fouled out because he finished the game with just 4 fouls. At least you could have gotten more out of him because with BARNES YOU HAVE NOTHING! PATHETIC IS WHAT YOU HAVE FOR DEPTH!

trey and travis, you need another year in college.that will increase your stock tremendously next season. you have a dynamite recruiting class next year plus the bulldogs will have 3 of the states top hoopsters in jay rhome, nick marshall and kentavious caldwell.by giving yourselves another year would all but make the bulldogs highly favorites to make the final four.both you guys, leslie and thompkins are by no way ready for the next level. you will be next season so do the sensible thing, stay in school, please.
