Charlotte – To borrow from the Kenny Loggins song that served as NBC’s theme for the 1980 NCAA tournament — yep, NBC once had the Big Dance — this is it. Georgia and Washington are about to meet, and ’round midnight we’ll know if the Bulldogs will be halfway toward the Sweet 16. And now you ask: Who in his/her right mind would pick Georgia to make the Sweet 16?
I haven’t had a very good tournament, forecast-wise — and we’re only in (Full) Day 2! — but I have made a bit of a comeback from yesterday’s misdoings. I had Arizona over Memphis, George Mason over Villanova, Florida State over Texas A&M. (I also had Tennessee over Michigan and came within 31 points of being right.)
As we speak, I’m seated courtside at Time Warner Cable Arena, and you will be shocked to know there are about 12,000 folks wearing powder blue in the joint. (North Carolina play Long Island in the early game.) But before we begin our live-blog thing, I must pass along a snippet of news both good and bad.
Owing to the late start of UGA-UDub, no print edition of Saturday’s AJC will include an MB column reflecting the outcome of the game. This is my 31st NCAA tournament, and it’s the first time I’ve never had a print deadline to meet. But what that does mean is that I won’t have to switch from the live-chatting to write an actual column. I can offer the usual wit and insight — “Yeah, right,” you’re saying — until the final buzzer, if and when it arrives.
With that, we’ll tip off the digital festivities, and I hope you’ll join me in saying: Thank goodness for AJC.com. And, once again, away we go.

There may be 12,000 people wearing baby blue in TW Arena now cheering for UNC , but would you believe that on Sunday afternoon there will be 12,000 baby blue-wearing Michigan fans?

It will be interesting to see how fast Irving gets close to full strength. Carlos Boozer played himself back into shape during the 2001 tournament. Scott May did not in 1975.

If we get Price and Leslie going we should be fine! Keep in mind Washingon has no post up threat and they jack up a lot of threes and as the games goes on shooting alot of threes can wear you out! Uga is not afraid like I thought they would look for them to take over in second half.

Mark I understand why Thompkins handles the ball for the press… but why the heck is he at the top of the key forcing bad passes inside…. he is playing the role of a 2 guard instead of a power forward. Is this the offense we have been running all year? Thompkins should be posting up every possession.

I cannot believe Thompkins is considered a high NBA draft pick. He has been getting dominated in the post all game. he looks great against lesser competition but when the big boys have shown up this year he has not been that impressive to me.. Maybe the ankle injury never fully healed, but he had to get on the floor before our season got away from us.

What does it matter how far we have come if we are underachieving? 2 NBA players on the floor. Pat Riley is no fool. Don’t think he’s there just for the weather in NC this time of year. This team has underachieved this year. Fox has no answer. Hasn’t all year when the team has needed him to coach the most.

One and done for the UGA Dawgs. Very interesting. It’s so funny how the writers in the AJC underrate every conference and team that is not in the SEC. “Georgia will roll over UW”, why? Only because UW is in the PAC 10 and UGA is in the SEC? That is so narrow sighted. “Georgia will beat UNC”, why? Because UNC is in the ACC and not the AJC’s beloved SEC? No matter that UNC is a basketball school, the same way that UGA is a football school (even though UNC has a better pedigree in basketball, than UGA has in football). That logic works (for now) in football, but is does not rule true in other sports. The AJC writers need to stop pandering to these SEC honks and use some common sense/logic. By the way, even though I highly doubt the any Pac-10 team will win the national championship in basketball this year, the PAC-10 has more national championships (in all sports combined) than any other conference, even your beloved SEC. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!!

Just like football…we have two supposed NBA-caliber players, a supposed world-beater transfer at shooting guard, the state’s Mr. Basketball coming in, and a solid, if not spectacular supporting cast, and the season ends largely in disappointment. Glad the team made the tourney, but the pre-season talk was about Georgia contending for the SEC East, and commentators earlier in the year were talking about Georgia as Sweet 16 team. When will a UGA team meet high expectations again? Ever?
Side note – Thornton must not be all that with the amount of minutes he got. Most schools play highly sought frosh.

Georgia DID NOT step up their defense until 1:40 left on the clock. They were down by 10 at the 4-5 minute mark and let Washington walk the ball up,the court. Coach Fox waited entirely too long to challenge Washington defensively. Georgia did not look tired at the end of the game. Georgia looked fit. They had a lot left in the tank. Coach Fox never tapped into that reserve energy. Fox should have pressed with 3-4 minutes left. Defense always wins down the stretch! No excuse!

Bottom line – Washington is a very good team. We did what we could to dictate tempo and we did a very good job of it. We got into trouble when they extended their defense. We didn’t have an answer to it. We did well to keep it as close as we did. Glad we made it to tourney this year and hope we can do it again next year without Thompkins, Price, and maybe Leslie.

Sure would have been nice to have the two points that the refs stole from us on the Travis Leslie put back. Terrible call. Bottom line is that we could not get any stops in the second half. Our guards were invisible again in the second half. Please recruit some guards. These two guards cannot graduate soon enough. Good riddance to Chris Barnes also because he sucks. I am proud of the way we fought to the end though.

Typical Georgia basketball game, take a lead early, relinquish it due to what appears to be lost focus leading to bad shots and passes with no help from disinterested weak bench, it has become mind boggling watching them play. We looked like we thought all we had to do was walk on the court and the victory was ours. UW’s defense on our guards was either incredibly good or we just weren’t presenting a challenge to them. Losing Price on questionable fouls early and the botched call on the put back by Leslie changed the game, as well as the fact that once Price went out we had no one on the bench that could replace his scoring. Team has get deeper in the future – bench has to contribute. Hopefully we can get back next year, but we’re probably at least two to three years away from getting throught the first round – if we get some recruits. Go Dawgs!

Watch tape of our team under Felton and compare that to this team and there’s no doubt that Fox does a very good job. The CBS guys pointed out a telling stat in this game that really pinpoints our team’s struggles all year: 0 points from the bench. We are just not a deep team. Honestly, I’m just glad that we represented (unlike the Vols) and we didn’t give up a huge deficit in the 2nd half for once.

Probably unpopular but Virginia Tech, Colorado, and Alabama should have gotten in over UGA and probably UT too. Both did a disservice to the SEC by laying an egg and both proved that they were all talk and no play. UT going 12-14 in their last 26 and UGA losing to Bama twice in one week should have been enough. Va Tech had a very good resume and Colorado beat K State 3 times. Guess it’s still better to lose to good teams than beat anyone. Sounds like UGA in 2000-2001.

No indian mascot names unless you are Florida State, no color on the tournament floors (and why black and blue? can’t even read the site name on the baseline), Football “championship” subdivision, and no “play-in” lest you hurt a school’s feelings, although before the field was 64 I think they had play-in games throughout tournament history

Turnovers were the difference in the game. Our inside game nullified their threes. UGA lost the same way they always lose. The had a lapse in intensity at the beginning of the half and allowed Washington to get comfortable. When they re-upped the intensity they were ten down and it took the rest of the game to climb back in to it. It came down to a hand full of turnovers at crucial times. Especially the inbounds pass at the end that led to 2 points for Thomas. Overall though, I thought UGA had less of a lapse than they usually have and played fairly well. Thompkins finally came to play and nobody had a horrible game. UGA just has to keep mentally maturing and they need to recruit some depth AND a point guard (VERY important).
