Chattin’ live on the NCAA tourney, propped-up-feet and all

The channel I'm watching, alas, is NOT truTV. (Photography and podiatry by M. Bradley)

The channel I'm watching, alas, is NOT truTV. (Photography and pedicure by M. Bradley)

Charlotte — Welcome to our third annual live chat off the Thursday afternoon NCAA tournament games. The first two years weren’t without controversy. In 2009 you folks made fun of my TV. Last year the Milwaukee Hyatt impelled me to relocate to Major Goolsby, a sports bar across the street, by delivering the sobering news that it did not offer room service for lunch.

(For breakfast, yes. For dinner, yes. Just not for lunch. Are you kidding me?)

But I digress. And now I move to this year’s issue: Of the 65 channels available on the wide-screen TV here at the Civic Center Marriott, truTV isn’t among them. I confess that I’d never heard of truTV until it came a carrier of NCAA games, but now I know what it is. And it’s not here. So I’m going to miss those games today.

My life: Drama untold.

And here we are again. I’m pretty sure the Marriott offers at least a tuna sandwich if not truTV, so I should be OK. For early games we’ve got Clemson-West Virginia, Butler-Old Dominion (though I won’t see it), Louisville-Morehead State and Temple-Penn State. Those are pretty good games, you’ll have to concede. And I’ll try my best to offer semi-cogent commentary until around 4 p.m., at which time I need to head for the arena for Washington’s media availability.

Thanks to all who entered Bradley’s Bracket Fiasco. (Entries are closed.) Thanks to all who dare to hang with me this afternoon. And away, as the Great One would say, we go.

Do you feel that you have done any Georgia fans a disservice by jumping on board and picking us to win? No offense, I like your writing a lot, and you seem like a great guy, but you picking us is an unneccessary MOUNTAIN for this team to have to climb! Sports Illustrated has nothing on your jinx ability. I loved the way you sold us down the river late in the first half against Xavier in 08, and how you clinched the Tide’s comeback last week. I took UGA to the sweet 16 as well, but it is mostly wishful thinking. I do believe they can beat Washington, and if they play great UNC. I think I read first an article in Fox News that referenced Hill’s column and had a link.

If you’re male……is there a better school to cheer for than, “Morehead”?

JSS

March 17th, 2011
2:09 pm

Look, Duke under Coach Mike Krzyzewski just did not recruit the inner city or the high profile public school leagues until after the Hurley/Hill/Lattener classes… The class with Battier, Brand, and Magnette were elite players who were actively sought (putting it bluntly “recruited”) by prep type schools like Detroit Country Day, Fenwick in Oak Park, IL, and Peekskill. Since then, he’s gone after some Midwest quasi public school kids like the Plumlee brothers. Still, he really doesn’t and hasn’t recruited like Ray Meyer did or Al McGuire did at equally academically hard institutions…

No, it was not, but when Mike Krzyzewski shows me he can recruit academically gifted kids too without being dependent on the “choosers of winners and losers” pipeline of the high line preps. I have a theory that these, ahem, First Round(Play-in) games are going to move us closer to a 16 seed beating a 1 seed. One year the Selection goofs are going to seriously under-seed a good team and stick them in one of these play in games. That team is going to get a chance to get the jitters out and get really hot going into their game with the 1 seed. Eventually a team is going to stay hot long enough to beat a 1. The advantage of having a game under its belt is going to propel a 16 seed to a win, I believe.

If GT does not make a major offer to Butler’s Brad Stevens then I will give up on them. Hell, he even looks like a Nerd. And that is on top of being one of the top 3 new coaches in NCAA history.

From the Butler website:

“In just his fourth year as a collegiate head coach and 11 years after leaving a business position as a marketing associate, Brad Stevens sits on top of the list for best basketball coaching starts in NCAA History.”

“Stevens, who owns two Horizon League Coach of the Year awards, has guided the Bulldogs to 110 wins in his brief career, breaking the previous four-year NCAA Division I record of 107 wins set by Everett Case of North Carolina State from 1947 to 1950. He also holds the NCAA three-year record with 89 victories, and he’s second on the two-year list with 56 wins. This season, he’s guided Butler to a 21-9 campaign and the school’s league-record fifth consecutive Horizon League regular season championship.”

Tech MUST make this guy say NO! A 110 wins in 4 years? Are you serious? Tech hire the damn guy! Jeez!

Clemson made their bed against Carolina. They were always a team that would stop driving the ball and then would get deep in the shot clock and have to depend on Stitt to bale them out… If Florida State comes out and plays a full game, because they struggle shooting; then Duke, Carolina, and FSU might go far…

Mark Price Craig Neal Mark Price Craig Neal Mark Price Craig Neal

wow big surprise, a quote from former GT player Drew Barry on who ought to coach at GT:

(I think that’s all overrated,” Barry said. “[Price] has played at every level and been highly successful. If you don’t think he doesn’t know basketball and can’t teach it, you’re crazy. Coaching is all about knowing the game and getting the maximum about every players you have.

“I’ve trained with Mark, I know he’s capable of doing that. I’ve worked out with Craig Neal, I know he’s capable of doing that. You can’t go wrong in hiring people like that.”)

thank you a Drew Barry for your comments, how some of you think that you have to start at Grad Assistant and work your way up is how it is, it may be if you are the 3rd string walk on or the water boy. But how any of you GT people could think Price isn’t qualified is beyond me. I guess you same people would tell Larry Byrd the same thing had he called a few years back that he must start at grad assistant. ha
