Chattin’ live on the NCAA tourney, propped-up-feet and all

Charlotte — Welcome to our third annual live chat off the Thursday afternoon NCAA tournament games. The first two years weren’t without controversy. In 2009 you folks made fun of my TV. Last year the Milwaukee Hyatt impelled me to relocate to Major Goolsby, a sports bar across the street, by delivering the sobering news that it did not offer room service for lunch.

(For breakfast, yes. For dinner, yes. Just not for lunch. Are you kidding me?)

But I digress. And now I move to this year’s issue: Of the 65 channels available on the wide-screen TV here at the Civic Center Marriott, truTV isn’t among them. I confess that I’d never heard of truTV until it came a carrier of NCAA games, but now I know what it is. And it’s not here. So I’m going to miss those games today.

My life: Drama untold.

And here we are again. I’m pretty sure the Marriott offers at least a tuna sandwich if not truTV, so I should be OK. For early games we’ve got Clemson-West Virginia, Butler-Old Dominion (though I won’t see it), Louisville-Morehead State and Temple-Penn State. Those are pretty good games, you’ll have to concede. And I’ll try my best to offer semi-cogent commentary until around 4 p.m., at which time I need to head for the arena for Washington’s media availability.

Thanks to all who entered Bradley’s Bracket Fiasco. (Entries are closed.) Thanks to all who dare to hang with me this afternoon. And away, as the Great One would say, we go.

Duke recruits kids who can get into and stay eligible at Duke. I don’t think I’m leaping off a logical cliff to say that the Fab Five probably didn’t have the grades to get into Duke. And before I get called a bigot, I, a white male, didn’t have the grades to get into Duke either.

Did Clemson blow the game vs UNC or did the ref fail to call a trip with about 50 seconds left that resulted in a shot not getting off in time?

Now Butler has a free throw at the 11:09 mark of the second half.

I read Hill’s OP-Ed piece yesterday by the way… Grant misses a broader point in what Rose (then 17) was saying…

Know who recruited James “Fly” Williams for Austin Peay?

Leonard Hamilton, now the Florida State coach.

Mark, speaking of great shooters, do you (or anyone) remember a shooter from UNLV who played in the mid 80’s. Anderson maybe? He also played before the 3pt line.

Hamilton knows his stuff. I’ve talked to him about pressure man d before

Then I can call u a bytch on a national stage and you won’t be pissed.
How many will see the movie and continue to see Rose’s lower class view of the world as the cool way to think.

Nick Anderson I think, Guy. He played a lot of years in the NBA, most notably with Shaq in Orlando.

Maybe you’re thinking of Anderson Hunt. Or Freddie Banks. Or one of the Smiths — Robert or Sam or Tony. They all played at UNLV.

Rose must have had some 2nd thoughts or he would not have sent twitter apologies to Hill and another Duke player preshowing.
Normally I hate Duke but today I’m on their side.

Jalen Rose was no academic dim wit at Southwestern (Detroit). A school doesn’t produce a neurosurgeon like John Hopkins Dr. Ben Carson and not have the ability to have some rigor. It is by no means Cass Technical. But it was no he was no fraud like fellow SW alum Antoine Joubert…

Have any of the people posting that Duke only recruits middle class kids who will stay on campus ever heard of a guy named John Wall? From Garner, NC? Made a bit of a name for himself at Word of God, Durham, NC?
Guess who offered him a scholarship? A guy with the nickname Coach K.

No, you just accept the fact that there was a perception tinged in reality of the type of recruits that your Coach recruited… The track record is there. Was “Uncle Tom” a good choice of a description? No, it was not, but when Mike Krzyzewski shows me he can recruit academically gifted kids too without being dependent on the “choosers of winners and losers” pipeline of the high line preps. Then, I’ll say that Rose was wrong to point a basic fact: “they don’t recruit people like me.”

One name explains Michigan failure during those years: Bill Frieder! He and Bobby Cremins can get together and always find a way to ruin a good thing!
