Can anyone "authenticate" that this is actually Cam Newton? (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
Yesterday we noted that Scott Moore, an Alabama entertainer, has been saying he has heard audio tapes of Cecil Newton talking about money in exchange for his famous son’s amateur services. We also noted that Moore has indicated the tapes could prove Cecil Newton’s famous son Cam had been privy to such discussions.
Today, via Sports Radio 97.7 The Zone in Huntsville, we learn that Moore isn’t sure of … well, of much of anything. From SportsByBrooks’ transcription of Moore’s appearance on Cole Cubelic’s morning show:
I’ve heard a voice on that tape that said there’s an offer for $180,000 from Auburn and this is Cecil Newton … This is what I’ve been told was Cecil Newton. I’ve never heard Cecil talk before … but I was told by those guys [Mississippi State boosters John Bond and Bill Bell] that this was Cecil talking and Kenny Rogers [another Mississippi State figure] is on these tapes as well. I’m going based on what I’ve heard.
Then this:
I’m going to play this [alleged Newton tape] on the air [of Moore's own radio show] and we’re going to talk about this on the air; then let’s get that voice authenticated.
I believe I can speak for all of us when I say: The man wants to put something on the air before having it authenticated? And he wants us to take him seriously?
Oh, and we should also note that SportsByBrooks, which does nice work, is reporting that a source “indicated that Bond and Bell have no audio file or tape containing the voice of Cecil Newton.”
Only in Alabama, kids. Only in Alabama.

….And your comments about Auburn paying players for over 5 decades, where do you get that from….any source or did you just make it up?
I have answered that question and the reason that I bring up 50 year old data is because Auburn is being rightly or wrongly accused of doing the same thing as they have done in the passed, the same things that coach Jordon was proven guilty of, the same things that coach Dye was proven guilty of and the same thing that coach Bowden admitted to doing, paying players.
UGA dosen’t ignore our problems or sweep them under the rug. When you make the school look bad as in what our former AD did we thank him for doing a good job prior to the indiscretion and part company with him.
Now at Auburn, they handle these things a little diffrently as in the cases of coaches Jordon and Dye. Both of these coaches were proved to have paid players and Dye was not only reassigned to another position but the playing field was named in his honor and again Auburn was so proud of the accomplishments of coach Jordon that they named their stadium after this coach who was caught again paying players.
As far as the player arrests at Ga, atleast these players were held accountable for their actions, while at Auburn, the campus police don’t hand these players over to the real police they simply hand them over to a coach or dean. Yes they do things a little differently in ol Alabama.

So the UGA holier than thou attitude rears it’s head again…..please…..as an objective football fan, I’m not blind to the fact that almost every school provides some sort of “extra benefit” to their players (i.e. Herschel driving a new Trans Am at UGA —from his parents? Doubt it)…..the LaMichael James kid at Oregon driving a new Escalade and when asked about it, he said he and a friend “switched cars” (yea right, I’ll take your Escalade and you take my 1974 Honda Civic, that works)….so while I don’t agree at all with paying student athletes (their tuition is their payment, it’s their job to take advantage of it), most players are getting paid, bottom line….so it’s just a matter of who gets caught….

Wow, DaMan, I actually agree with you on something. I’ve heard lots of people say that college football players should be paid. Well, they are. Lots. If you figure 4 years of tuition, room and board, books, etc., these kids get well over $150,000 worth of education. And it should pay off if they go to class and stay out of trouble.
Where we differ is on the Herschel point. I’ve never heard any mention about him before the Cam thing. I know that boosters help kids from time-to-time. But when we start talking about institutionally paying kids, and to the tune of $200,000, that’s criminal.
Aubies are constantly taking different defensive postures. First it was “he was never paid”. Then it was “well there’s no proof”. Now it’s “well everybody does it”. What’s next?

“Auburn University has been sited as being the third most penalized team in the history of the NCAA.”
————————————————————-
Auburn has seven major violations. Georgia has six and bammer is currently on probation. What’s your point, Columbus Dawg?
Nobody in the Newton family got any extra benefits from Auburn or anywhere else. I know this because….wait for it….The NCAA had a team of investigators work the case from July through November of 2010. They found nothing. When their investigation was finished, they declared Cam Newton “Eligible Without Condition” on December 2nd. Game, set and match to Auburn. Oh yeah, National Championship to Auburn too.
There is nothing out there past the NCAA’s final determination except the drooling of jealous losers. Can’t wait for spring practice when Gene Chizik and his energetic young staff will start building for a repeat performance. I do believe back-to-back championships for the Auburn Tigers will really make you whiners have a stroke.

MikeP and 2smartjones, you guys always seem to post at about the same time. And you both seem like 5th graders. Maybe you should meet.
I keep seeing this comparison about major NCAA infractions. You list UGA’s as 6 and AU’s as 7. The list below doesn’t mention UGA, but talks a lot about AU. Seems that AU’s 7 were all in football, something about paying players. Hmmmmmm. They must have it all wrong. We all know that AU wouldn’t pay players because that would mean really, really severe penalties.
Most NCAA Infractions: The Record No Team Wants To Hold
By Cody Dockens (Correspondent) on August 3, 2010 3,468
In the wake of the USC/Reggie Bush scandal, one can’t help but wonder which teams and conferences have had the most sanctions and what were the reasons for them. There are many teams who have committed major infractions, and there have been almost as many types of punishments as there have been rule breakers. Below you will find the list of the teams with the most infractions, details of both the well known and lesser known scandals and their fallouts, and I will name the dirtiest coach in football as well.
1.Southern Methodist (SMU):Eight, all football.
2.Arizona State:Eight, mostly baseball.
3.Auburn:Seven, mixed bag of violations, biggest were football.
4.Florida State: Seven academic scandals mostly involving all sports. Most publicized were football related.
5.Oklahoma:Seven, five were football related.
6-10:Memphis, Texas A&M, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Wichita State also all had seven violations but none as big as the mentioned before.
Perhaps both the best and least well known example of rules violation and punishment is the 1986 case against SMU. From 1974-1985 the SMU Mustangs were caught for five major NCAA violations (for a grand total of seven), averaging a major infraction about every other year. Many of the violations concerned the payment of players, or a slush fund made available to them. After an NCAA investigation found that over $61,000 was made available to a player, the NCAA handed down what was known as the death penalty. SMU’s 1987 season would be cancelled along with all 1988 home games.
They would lose 55 scholarships over the next four years and be barred from off-campus recruiting. Most all the team transferred, resulting in them having to cancel the partial 1988 season as well. From 1980-1986 SMU’s record was 52-19-1, and since their record is 64-158-3.
Auburn has had seven violations for various causes, the worst of which consisted of boosters paying players for performance. Players got paid to play and received “bonuses” for forced fumbles, touchdowns, interceptions etc. This happened while Pat Dye was the head coach, and reports indicate that Pat Dye himself was directly involved with helping players secure illegal loans from banks.

Arizona State University 8
Southern Methodist University 8
Auburn University 7
Texas A&M University, College Station 7
University of Minnesota, Twin Cities 7

See Georgia on there at six? I do.

All involved, that is the first I’ve heard of such things. Do you have a link to reputable site, or are you merely babbling your wishful thinking on a message board.?
I do find it odd that the NCAA didn’t find any of these things when they investigated 20 years ago. Got a clue as to why they didn’t find this stuff?
My guess is they didn’t find it because none of this ever happened. If it makes you happy to type it, even if you don’t believe it, go ahead and type.
It’s pretty cool, watching all the jealous losers make stuff up about Auburn. You’d be better served to address your own school’s problems, but whatever floats your boat, y’all are amusing, and quite creative in a third-grade sort of way.

If you’ll note, every story about Cam Newton cheating at Florida credits Thayer Evans at FoxSports.com as the source. His tale was debunked by the Houston Chronicle, Gainesville Sun and Yahoo sports.com. I’ve posted the links in Chip Tower’s thread.
Evans was fired from the N.Y. Times for making things up about players at Texas and Kentucky. It won’t be long before FoxSports.com fires him for making up things about Auburn.
Here’s a tad from the Yahoo Sports article, just to get you started:
“FoxSports.com writer Thayer Evans published a story today alleging Auburn quarterback Cameron Newton “had three different instances of academic cheating while attending the University of Florida.”
The story follows several days of editorial attacks on Newton by Thayer, a former stringer for the New York Times.
Two independent sources with detailed knowledge of the UF academic discipline system during the period in question have disputed the Evans story. According to the sources, no allegations of academic impropriety regarding Cam Newton were sent to the Florida Student Conduct Committee at any time either during or after Newton’s time at UF.”
Check out the rest of it at the link I posted in Chip’s thread. I promise you won’t like what you see.
The few of your links that don’t credit Evans as the source are ,uh, Bleacher Reports, blogs and “sound off” by jealous rival fans..
Also, where’s the link about Pat Dye paying players for big hits and so forth? That should be some great reading! But you can’t find anything of the sort, correct?
This whole thing has been just silly. Had Auburn done anything wrong, the NCAA would have found it in five months of investigation, to say nothing of scumballs like Thayer Evans and Joe Schadd lurking around in the bushes.
You need a new hobby, the “Auburn beat us because they cheated” excuse is getting worn out.

We deny doing anything wrong, that’s what the Just and Righteous do. If Auburn is a dirty program, all you have to do is prove it.
It’s been 20 years since the Auburn football program had any major violation, 31 years since a recruiting violation.
It do think it may be pointless to have a discussion with someone who links to blogs and “sound-off” sections as though they are articles from a legitimate source. You didn’t attend UGA or any other college did you?

Today the Huntsville, Alabama radio station that Moore works for, the place where he was going to air the tapes, fired him. Seems he didn’t have any tapes after all.
But never forget, where there’s smoke there’s fire, so Scott Moore is bound to have something incriminating, right? Keep on telling yourselves that “smoke there’s fire’ story. What it means in the real world is where there’s smoke there is somebody like Scott Moore blowing smoke, no fire at all.

Why does the AJC give so much print to Cam Newton ? In my opinion he should be procecuted along with his daddy. It shouldn’t take much common sense to know that he knew about the money deal. If the NCAA will keep looking, they will find the proof. It looks to me that they don’t want the truth to be found out. This can only get worse if it is not stopped.

Lou Dorris: How long do you want them to look? They investigated from July through November. When, on December 2nd, the NCAA declared Cam Newton “Eligible Without Condition” they were satisfied with their investigation and through with it.
If, of course, you have one single scrap of evidence, by all means turn it over to them. After five months of searching they had nothing and moved on. The only way that investigation becomes active again is if new evidence appears because five months of investigating assured the NCAA that Cam Newton and Auburn are clean.
