Iconic Cam goes to the combine, but what’s this about a tape?

Cam Newton throws for the NFL folks, not particularly well. (AP photo)

Cam Newton throws for the assembled NFL folks, and not particularly well. (AP photo)

Over the weekend Cam Newton went to Indianapolis and did himself no favors. Cam Newton arrived at the NFL combine  having already offered a quote that made him sound less like the anchor a franchise seeks and more like … Justin Bieber?

To Peter King of SI.com: “I see myself not just as a football player but as an entertainer and an icon.”

Also this, to Dan Wetzel of Yahoo! Sports: “I don’t want to sound arrogant, but I did something in one year people couldn’t do in their whole collegiate careers.”

Which, you’d have to say, sounded a tad arrogant. Then Newton ran for the assembled scouts and team execs and, you’ll be shocked to learn, ran pretty fast. Then he threw, which went less well. (He completed 11 of 21 passes, which is OK if you’re working against a real defense, which Newton wasn’t.) He also sought to deflect media inquiries about his wayfaring career, saying: “I’m not going to entertain anything that’s in the past. I’m all about the future.”

Speaking of that which Cam prefers not to speak: The latest development, if you care to call it that, regarding Newton and Auburn involves a tape Alabama entertainer/radio host Scott Moore says he has heard in which Cecil Newton, Cam’s father, discussing how much various schools were willing to pay for his son’s services as player/entertainer. The tapes are said to have been made by Mississippi State boosters John Bond and Bill Bell. According to Moore, Cam Newton was in the room during one taped exchange, although there’s no word on whether he identified himself by saying, “Hi, this is Cam, and I’m an icon.”

According to John Pennington of the invaluable Mr. SEC.com:

The word is spreading now that Moore will play the audio recordings on his new radio show in two weeks.  Now, what kind of guy would try to build up an audience for the release of potentially groundbreaking news?  Somebody trying to build up ratings in order to get his fledgling show into syndication (which Moore has admitted is a goal of his).  It’s called a stunt.  And this has all the makings of being just that.

For the record, Moore’s Web site — MooreVoices.com — features this description of himself and his talents:

Scott W. Moore is renowned for his college football acumen and uncanny ability to impersonate over 70 celebrities, sportscasters and college football coaches. He is sure to keep your audiences laughing with hilarious takes on Bobby Bowden, Steve Spurrier, Nick Saban, Pete Carroll, Bob Stoops, Ron Zook, Nick Saban, Pat Dye, Lou Holtz, Keith Jackson, Bill Clinton, George Bush and more!

One question: In addition to the always hilarious Bob Stoops, does Scott W. Moore now do an impression of Cecil Newton?

It’s hard to know how to take this. On the one hand,  you have one entertainer (Moore) saying he has heard a recording of a conversation for which another entertainer (Cam) was present. On the other, Auburn inoculated itself from Cecil Newton’s pay-for-play solicitation to Mississippi State by insisting Cecil’s son had no knowledge of any overture to anybody. The NCAA bought this defense. Would a tape that puts Cam in the room, so to speak, change the NCAA’s mind? If so, what would happen to Auburn’s BCS title?

Cam Newton told reporters he didn’t go to Indy to talk about the past, a phrasing that sounded a bit too much like Mark-McGwire-on-Capitol-Hill for comfort. It could well be that Newton has a long and prosperous NFL career as both player and entertainer, and when he’s done we’ll still be trying to sort out his one year at Auburn.

Najeh Davenpoop You are right. This is a capitalist society. No one is forced to play college or professional football. You can play any other sport and get paid straight out of high school.
When an athlete chooses to play college football there are rules to play by and consequences when you don’t. If the current system is, “feudal system” or, “a plantation system” then do something about it. You can organize a boycott of watching football. You can try to organize the players to boycott playing football. You seem to enjoy it when people don’t play by the rules and cry injustice when they have to suffer because of it.

Cam is a complete and utter idiot. Even if the tape does in fact come to be and Cam is in the room- the spineless NCAA and even more spineless SEC Commish will do nothing…..what a piece of work. Hopefully he suffers a career ending injury and he can go to ESPN as a Iconic broadcaster….or maybe to the NCAA offices as a Iconic Loser!

So this is what Aubies want us to believe. Cam Newton turned down $200,000 to play at UT (where they named a college street for a guy who didn’t even win one NC) in front of 100,000 rabid college football fans to play at Auburn for free?!?! I believe that. And t’s March and I’m still waiting on Santa to deliver my Christmas presents.

Yet again you post trash without mentioning two key facts. 1. Moore is die hard bama fan with a major chip on his shoulder because his beloved tide lost a few stupid football games. 2. Moore is a convicted wife beater. Those two facts discredit him immediately. Bradley once again proves to be the copy/paste master of the ajc. How about some real research for once you hack.

DC: what is wrong with society is people that ignore the things that have gone on with the Auburn program, puting their head in the sand like the NCAA and SEC did when it came to the Cam deal, not to mention the arrogance of a head football coach that condones bad behavior in order to win at any cost. What is funny is what goes around comes around and it seems to be ringing true for Auburn…..

Auburn folks know deep down that the program is dirty. But the obsession over watching Bama’s success over the years has really gotten to them. Could you imagine what it’s like being second best in the state for so long? (just ask Tech)

Auburn pays players…….duh! They paid Cam Newton $200,000 or so to play there. It’ll come out one day. Auburn may very well get to keep their trophy. But the *NC is not objective. It’s influenced by the opinions of college football fans, writers, coaches, etc. from all over the country.

I was in line at a store behind a guy with a Univ. of Oregon cap on the other day. We started talking football and the subject of AU cheating immediately came up. It’s all over the country!

If AU does get to keep the *NC trophy, it will always be a hollow victory. It is not deserved because it was won under mass cheating circumstances. Everyone knows it. And since the NC is “mythical” and thus subjective, AU’s has been erased in the court of public opinion. AU fans can deny, deny, deny, but everyone else knows it.

Hope it was worth all that to you Aubies.

DC…Uhh that towel swinging coach actually gave Dirty Fairly a high five on the field after his ridiculous un-flagged Ray Lewis celebration dance. A high five generally meeans ‘job well done’ or ‘congratulations.’ If that is not condoning awful play, I don’t know what is.

Last word, yes and there are unicorns and dragons…stop with your day dreaming and live in the present and in the now. NC is actually hollow but blame the designers who made the trophy. NC isn’t hollow as in the fact that AU didn’t win it…AU is NC for 2010. Period. There is no objectiveness about it. They won the AP and coaches poll and the blah blah blah poll as well.

State of georgia (and ecspecially UGA fans) needs to realize this state sucks at football and will never win another natty title!! Get over it and stop trying to bring down schools that actually have a good football program. All schools cheat and the ones that win national titles are the ones that don’t get caught (ala AJ Green). All schools and booster give money to athletes. There called sluch funds ppl and you must be dumber than dirt to believe UGA doesn’t have any. And to all these no class rednecks throwing cheap shots at auburns toomers corner, get some class and a real education by actually stepping into a classroom. What’s with all the false bravado coming out of you clowns today? You make it sound like the NCAA just announced shutting down our program.

Basically the headline is a guy with a radio show building up the playing of a tape. Until those tapes are played and implicate Auburn, I couldn’t give a rat’s a&&- and neither would you if it were one of your players involved.

It’s a simple fact that it is impossible to prove that something DID NOT happen. Allegations are allegations, and I expect you idiots to keep pretending you have access to some information the NCAA doesn’t.

As for me I’ll stick to the on-field results until something more compelling comes out. It’s the only thing we all certainly know happened.

My brother-in-law is an Oregon grad. Even before *AU and Oregon were matched up, he was asking about the Cam Newton situation. Said that most folks out West have a very low opinion of *AU. He even knew about the Milt McGreggor slant.

If *AU’s not dirty, they sure have a huge public relations problem. But I think the problem stems from the dirt.

Hey look. It’s Cobb Dawg back with a whole new name! Embarrassed about what you wrote earlier? This doofus has been told many times how many terms of school Cam Newton attended at Auburn, yet he keeps coming back with “one semester”.

Had it been one semester, Newton couldn’t have participated in spring practice or else not participated in the regular season. I’m pretty sure you remember him participating in the regular season. He played in the spring game and every newspaper story about Auburn’s practices last year included progress reports on Newton . Here’s a thought: Call the NCAA and tell them that Newton wasn’t in school at Auburn last spring. I’m certain they’ll appreciate being sent on yet another wild goose chase by yet another jealous fan of a rival school.

You’ve answered your own question. The academic stuff was total unsubstantiated BS, written to increase somebody’s hits on his blog site. Criminal past was buying a stolen laptop, for which he was sentenced to attending a class on awareness. Sounds like a real gangsta’, right?

But as soon as something could benefit him, he admitted taking Roids. I don’t know about you, but if i am accused of breaking rules and i did not. I am going to make sure everyone knows i did not.
The NCAA found Mr. Newton guilty of brokering money from MSU, which is a violation they ignored because they believed Cam “didn’t know” what was going on. I don’t buy it and I am not alone.
