True confession: I’ve actually spent a lot of time thinking about who’s going to win this game. (Ordinarily I just go with my gut, which can prove problematic. Perhaps you knew that already.) And I, at the risk of blowing it for everyone, am picking the Falcons. My rationale:
The Falcons have been the better team. The Falcons are playing at home. The Falcons have already proved they can beat Green Bay.
Ergo, the better team/home team/proven team should win. By the count of 20-17, let’s say. And now, having said that …
Green Bay is the only team remaining in the NFC bracket capable of coming here and stealing one. The Bears? No. The Seahawks? Get real. The Packers are a good team capable of winning if the Falcons perform the way they did against New Orleans on Dec. 27. But I’m thinking the Falcons won’t. I’m thinking they’ll learn from that night that a game of such magnitude is no place for timidity. I’m thinking, in sum, that the Falcons will get past this impediment and play in Super Bowl XLV.
But that’s just me. And I’ve been known to be wrong. But I’ve just spoken to a high-level Falcons official — have fun guessing who — and that individual is frankly peeved at the plethora of pundits picking the Packers tonight. (Try saying that three times fast with a mouthful of peanut butter.) And I’m thinking the home side will render a performance to remember — for good reasons.
And with that, this floor is again open for questions, comments and threats for having jinxed the Falcons. I’ll be here all night, and I’d appreciate the ride-along. (Speaking of riding along, I rode to the game from the Atlanta Bread Co. on South Cobb Drive with esteemed colleague Darryl Orlando Ledbetter. D-Led has a sporty Mustang. Bet you didn’t know that about him.)
But I digress. Time to get ready for some football. Time to rise up. Time to watch the Falcons send the Pack packing. Join me, please. You’ll be sorry you did.

I’m amazed that a 13-3 team with the best home record in the NFL, playing at home, playing a team with a worse record, and that they have already beaten, is basically given no shot to win by the national media.

Chris Owens will get picked on by No. 12 early and often. Lofton will need to backstop the run defense. If they get solid ball control from the offense, and limit big plays on defense, I like our chances. But I think you’re right about the NO game, and I remember thinking at the time that they would learn from that game how to deal with the big stage jitters. So maybe this is the night where they really grow up as a team.

LOL, “go pack go” the Packers literally have one out of 17 games in which they ran the ball remotely good, at least over 100 yards, and all of a sudden the Packers are going to start “running over” teams in the playoffs? Funny. The Eagles simply didn’t plan for Starks, but trust me, the Falcons coaching staff is wayyyyyy to smart to overlook it. They’ll have a package for Mr. Starks.
What’s up with ESPN and the NFL network Mark with Starks? Green Bay has had one game where their offense resembled a running game and now that’s what’s going to get them to the superbowl? I don’t buy it. Starks has been around all year and not had a game like that. One trick pony I say.
So which is it Mark? Does ESPN and NFL network really think GB has a running game, or is it more of risking their credibility to start building up a Bears-Packers NFC championship game?

Seems to me ESPN & Co. are giving the Packers a little too much credit on their running game. If there’s anything football fans recognize, it’s that consistent guys like Michael Turner get stuffed at times during the season and, on the other hand, under-the-radar players and bench players occasionally run wild. Starks had one solid performance, but if Ryan Grant was suddenly good to go 5 minutes before the game started you can bet your house that Starks would be sitting the bench.

I think the important thing is to keep the Packers from jumping out to a 2 score lead in the first half so they can maintain the running game and have a chance to wear them down in the 2nd half. I know that is the Falcons philosophy every game, but even more important against the Packers who shouldn’t have as much in the tank playing on 6 days rest after playing two tough road games.

Greetings Falcon Fans!!! Been following the live blogs all year but haven’t contributed cause I got sick of seeing the crap from the Ryan haters – Flacco/Vick lovers. ( I mean Joe “Choke” Flacco). But, I wanted to come on and tell all you Falcon fans that we up here in Boston are rooting hard for your team and our boy Matty Ice. We had the privilege of having him up here for 4 years and it was a pleasure watching him in many come-from-behind wins at BC. He’s tough as nails (go on youtube and check out the video of the hit he took his first game at QB for BC against Clemson. Bounced right up after it and it was vicious) and yes, he CAN throw the deep ball. I tried to tell you all 3 years ago when the Falcons drafted him to just give him time and watch out.
Regardless of what happens in the game tonight you guys finally have a franchise, a team and a face of the franchise you can be proud of for many years to come. You can believe MR will never embarrass himself, the team or the city. And I see super bowls in the Falcons future. So good luck tonight…..Go Falcons!!!!!! Send the Pack back to green bay with their tails between their legs.

At the very least, the Falcons have to run 4 or 5 minutes off the clock on this drive. They are currently losing the time of possession battle, which is one they always win. The longer the defense has to stay out there, the more tired they get and the likelihood of them forcing turnovers decreases.

No question Rodgers has the better arm. Ryan’s bread and butter is completing short, high-percentage passes. 3rd and long doesn’t play to his strengths, which is a big reason why the Falcons’ offense is designed to ensure that the Falcons don’t see 2nd and long or 3rd and long. Not a great play call either. They rolled a right handed passer to his left and made him throw against his body. The entire Green Bay secondary playing zone coverage shifted that way too. If Ryan stays in the pocket and throws that, there’s a chance he gets it to Roddy before Williams can undercut the pass.

That was a big play. Tough spot to be in . . ..not insurmountable. Dangerous play, bad decision, bad angle on tackle . ..could have had the guy. After watching this team the past two years, I’ve come to notice how certain things lead to bad plays like that. The sack was the set-up punch for the knock out punch – Pick-6. M Bradley – yes not over. I jumped on blog later in day and was reading through it. When I got on Pitt was up 24-21 . . .. I remember reading your post when they were down 14 saying the game is 60 minutes. We may have a tougher hill to climb the way Rogers is playing . . . . . but it can be done. Ryan has to get back to making better decisions. That pass in the end zone is not what we’ve seen most of the year where he would go for the shorter sure thing that could lead to more yards after catch. I just hated that roll out play – Green Bay knew they had to watch the Endzone and Sidelines. Terrible play – terrible decision to throw it.

Well, this 2nd half is Matt Ryan’s time to either prove the haters right or wrong. His stats don’t say he’s an elite QB, but his won-loss record does, and the national media puts him in that discussion. The Falcons’ short passing offense plays to his strengths, and the ball control nature of the team rarely puts the Falcons’ offense in the position where they have to abandon the running game and put the offense on Ryan’s ability to make plays down the field. Now is his time to prove he can do that. Let’s see what he’s got.

I don’t think it is Ryans fault. It’s this horrible defense’s fault. Apparently Ryan is going to have to continue to throw because he has to try to keep pace with Rogers disection of this pathetic defense. The Packers have done exactly what they wanted to do. They have exploited our defense and have taken Turner out of the game.

Another long down distance and our corners get burned again for a first down. Our corners can’t tackle worth $hit. They’re too small. Only want to hit instead of wrapping up. Rogers is looks like Brady tonight. We blitz and our defense runs right by Rogers. We hit him behind the line and can’t take him down. We need to dispense with the five foot nothing cornerbacks. And yes, Van Gorder has the deer in the headlights look. But it’s not all his fault. The defensive line can’t get pressure and our blitzes look like a limp you know what. Rogers is picking our secondary apart. Why are we continuing to play zone? Another touchdown and this game is over. Hell Seattle could beat the Falcons tonight. Being a native Atlantan for 45 years, never ever bet on a professional Atlanta team to win it all. Sure the birds made it to the Super Bowl and got blown out. And yes the Braves won one world series out of how many appearences? The crowd has been silenced. Green Bay came to play.

i dont care who your coordinators are.. we are ahead of schedule.. look @ our roster. this is a process.. even the “elite” teams are shadows of their former selves. we have had a great season. Smith is everything i want in a head Coach. says the right things.. players are focused and compete every down.
how many times have we seen our guys in position to make plays.. but just havent. @ a point accountability has to be on players and young Dimitroff… and i have confidence that we’ll get it done. however, to date.. drafts and Dunta have looked like misses, exception Peters.
guys cant stay on field.

I’m a Matt Ryan fan but he lost the game with the pick 6 before the half. And Van Goober is showing me much either with his defense. Granted, Aaron Rodgers is hard to stop tonight. But we look clueless on defense. Abraham at nose tackle? WTF? Packers would beat anybody tonight but we need to at least show a pulse on defense. We can dink and dunk our way back into this one either with “Mularkey ball.”

This is a nightmare; a normally well-prepared and focused Falcons team has played sloppy and flat-footed against an aggressive, very good opponent in the Packers, and the results so far seem to be coming together to add yet another dark chapter in the franchise’s history.
How many blatant fundamental mistakes can a 13-3 NFL team make? Defenders trying to arm-tackle Aaron Rodgers (and missing, again and again); that’s a scene we’ve been seeing FAR too much of this season. 2nd and 20s that are turned into quick first downs by nonexistent coverage and a total lack of pressure on Rodgers. Matt Ryan staring down a receiver (never a good idea and one that he should have outgrown by now). The offensive line that protected Ryan so well during the regular season suddenly letting him get sacked time and again.
Green Bay ISN’T necessarily a better football team than the Falcons, but tonight they’re certainly playing like it. They came better prepared and so far have absolutely had their way with our team. If the current situation holds up it’s going to be a very hard way to see the season end, and I hope that everyone associated with this team, from the players to the coaches to the owner, NEVER forget this feeling and never let it happen ever again. This is a disgrace and a major setback to the feeling of progress this team has made over the past three seasons. By now “the process” should be complete as far as becoming an elite NFL team, but from what I’ve seen the Falcons sadly just aren’t there yet.
I hear pitchers and catchers are reporting, in case anyone’s interested right about now. Sorry if I seem fair weather, but it hurts to follow and root tirelessly for a team through so many weeks only to see this kind of effort in what’s supposed to be a “breakthrough” game.

In the draft — we need d-linemen. Gotta put pressure on the quarterback. We could use another corner, because Christopher Owens has obviously shown he isn’t a guy that can be trusted on an NFL field. It needs to be defense, defense, defense, and maybe grab a receiver. Roddy’s obviously great, but I’m not sure Jenkins is a real No. 2, and Harry Douglas is nonexistent in Mularkey’s offense that refuses to throw a ball more than 10 yards.

No one wants to hear that crap. We are getting our butts whooped by the Packers JV team. This happens to the Falcons every time we fans start getting excited about the team. As long as we have that broken down dump truck for a running back in Turner the Burn-out we will not get anywhere. The NFL is not what it used to be. It’s not this boring ground it out offense.
